Dorothy Quaife has spent decades manning the VHF radio from her home at Paparoa, diligently logging trip reports and listening out for boaties who are heading out for a day on the water. Over the years she has coordinated many emergency rescue operations. With her late husband Ansel Quaife and friends Fred and Noreen Mays, Dorothy helped set up the Kaipara Marine Radio Group in the early 1970s and together they self funded and set up the first marine CB base station on Pouto Point. Since then, she has spent eight hours a day seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year at the radio, watching over thousands of people out on the water. She originally started taking radio calls from her own living room in 1969 to 1980, and quickly become the voice of the North Kaipara Harbour. In 1993, when the local Coastguard North Kaipara unit was founded, Dorothy continued her role. “We gratefully acknowledge the long standing commitment of volunteers such as Dorothy who have given their time selflessly for many years to providing the radio service for boaties on the Kaipara Harbour, helping them to stay safe,” said Coastguard Northern Region Operations Manager, Ray Burge. Boaties in the region, which includes the notorious Kaipara Bar, will continue to be safe once Dorothy steps down, with Coastguard managing communications on the Kaipara Harbour (channels 61 and 66) through the dedicated

Operations Centre at the Marine Rescue Centre in Mechanics Bay, Auckland. This has been driven by the North Kaipara unit as a more sustainable way to manage radio calls while allowing volunteers to focus on their own water projects. As Dorothy departs, Coastguard reminds local boaties to ensure they register a VHF call sign for their vessel, which helps them identify boats quickly in a search-and-rescue situation.

“We’re looking forward to continuing the relationship with boaties that Dorothy has so carefully nurtured over the airwaves in the Kaipara area by providing important safety information, and letting boaties know we have their back when they’re out on the water.” Last year 1,019 Coastguard Northern Region volunteers dedicated 141,762 hours to saving lives at sea, bringing 3,997 people home to safety. ¢

Panel to present plant recommendations u by Joanna Manson

Members of the Mangawhai community plan advisory panel held an open day over the weekend to inform locals on the feedback they have gathered over the preferred direction for growth in the area.

p The Mangawhai community advisory panel from left: Ian Greenwood, Joanna Roberts, Richard Gunson, Kelli Sullivan, David Wingate and chairperson Belinda Vernon

The panel has spent the last 10 months reviewing a range of workstreams which need addressing throughout the next 20 years as the area experiences high growth. Chairperson Belinda Vernon said Saturday’s open day went well. “There was a constant stream of people throughout the two hours. The themes of greater connectivity, safe pedestrian and cycling travel, improved facilities in open spaces and sustainable approach to stormwater management were well received.” “We’ve formed our views as a result of the consultation with the community and we’ll be making recommendations to council but wanted to give the

community the heads up on the direction first.” She said it was a “courtesy to the community” to host an open day as the panel believes the findings will be in line with what the overall community thinks. The recommendations will be shared with the Kaipara District Council over the next month and will be considered in a draft Mangawhai Community Plan which is currently being prepared by council, with opportunity for further community input. Once the final Mangawhai Community Plan has been formally adopted by council, expected in November, any District Plan changes will be undertaken and any projects included in the proposed Long Term Plan 2018/2028. ¢

Councillor graduates u by Joanna Manson

Kaipara District Councillor Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock recently graduated with merit in her Master’s degree in Politics from Massey University. Her studies on politics motivated Victoria to stand in the October 2016 local government election leading to her appointment as a West Coast/Central Ward councillor. “I chose to do my thesis on Santiago in Chile. My specific research was on the privatisation of education, pensions and health and how it affects families and women. “From my time there I saw how important local government and representation is as a lot of the public services that we take for granted here like roading, libraries, rubbish collection and parks are privatised over there. It really struck home,” she said. Cancer fundraising dinner Two Matakohe school mothers have embarked on a fundraising venture to help a nine-year old pupil faced with a battle against cancer. “Jazzlyn Martin, a nine-year-old pupil at Matakohe School has received the frightening news that she has a life-threatening brain tumor,” said Di Hardisty, who with Nic Hawkes is organising a community dinner. “Jazz has had brain surgery to try to remove the tumour but it is a type that does not respond to chemotherapy, so a long course of radiation therapy and other treatment plans are needed. “Unfortunately, most of the treatment plans are not subsidised, so giving Jazz the best chance has hit a brick wall and an empty pocket.” Di and Nic put their heads together and came up with the community dinner plan. “We are going to have a three course meal, along with live entertainment, auctions and raffles,” said Nic. The event is set for Saturday July 8, in the Matakohe Memorial Hall from 6pm.

The main occupants within the park are the Dargaville Museum and the Kaipara Vintage Machinery club who shared opposing views on whether the direction of traffic flow should change from clockwise to anti-clockwise. The museum wanted the direction to change to clockwise for safety around those attending large functions which often led to vehicles and people milling around on the road. Dargaville Museum Society president Don Elliot said “there is real chaos here during events such as funerals and we want to continue to provide our event service.” Vintage machiner y club representatives held concerns over the costs that would fall back on the club if the direction was to change as their buildings were purpose-built for an anti-clockwise traffic flow. The Harding Park governance committee received 17 submissions to keep the current direction with seven against, and decided on the status quo for health and safety reasons. Ensuring people are safe around our electricity network in Kaipara and Whangarei Districts is critical. We are constantly working hard to ensure people working around our lines understand the importance of safety and the correct practices that must be carried out in order to keep them safe. There are health and safety regulations and codes of practice which must be followed by electricity lines companies, contractors or members of the public. When working under lines it is imperative to stay outside the Minimum Approach Distance (MAD) of 4m. When working near overhead lines or power poles it is a legal requirement that you follow the minimum safe distances as set down by New Zealand Electrical Code of Practice – NZECP 34:2001 Electrical Safe Distances. This document is available from www.energysafety.govt.nz All work activity must be kept at least four metres from overhead lines. If you need to work closer to our overhead lines you must get a Close Approach Consent from Northpower which takes two working days to process. Another important rule is that you cannot dig within five metres of one of our power poles without a Close Approach Consent. And depending on the depth of excavations, you may need additional pole supports to prevent poles collapsing. Call Northpower Faults on 0800-10-40-40 and we will advise you of your requirements and will provide supervision in some cases. You must always check for underground electricity cables before starting excavation. To check for cables and to book a cable location enter the request on the Before U Dig website www.beforeudig.co.nz If adequate notice is given of at least two working days, this service is currently free during normal working hours (7.30am to 4pm weekdays). Trout fishing success

Couple’s amazing races u by Anna harding

Dargaville couple Shelley and Ross Friedrich recently competed in the Inca Trail Marathon to Machu Picchu in Peru. Ross came second and Shelley came 13th.

p Phillip Durham, chairman of the Northland Fish and Game Council presents Stella Allen with her trophy and prizes for winning the ‘child under 12 heaviest trout category’ at the 2017 Kai Iwi Lakes trout fishing competition. Stella’s fish weighed in at 1.265kg and overall heaviest trout winner — Steve Lloyd’s weighed in at 1.40kg. Bad weather did not deter fisherman or the fish with 57 entries and a total of 73 fish weighed in.

Ross was 21 minutes behind the first place winner, with 8 hours and 59 minutes and Shelley came in at 11 hours and 54 minutes. They have been competing in various ultra marathons and adventure races around the world, including a race in Antarctica and a marathon from the Mt Everest base — known as the highest marathon in the world. The Inca trail marathon is known as the hardest in the world, due to its high altitude and steep, rugged terrain. Ross says that they always focus their trips around some kind of race event, with “the more interesting and different the better,” he said. He wasn’t expecting the second placing, saying that a lot of

people slowed on the steep mountains and at the 4,200 metre attitude mark, while he was able to keep his pace well enough. The couple have been racing for around 20 years and Shelley said that “my goal is to run a marathon in every continent and this was my sixth. I have Europe left.” They often train with the Dargaville Hash House Harriers on Wednesday nights and the “support from them has been amazing.” Both said they love doing the races because it’s something different to look forward to. “You meet people that are energetic happy and positive — just fantastic people and you see fantastic places,” said Shelley. ¢

Welcome

New business owners and residents

We The Dargaville Community Development Board (DCDB) on behalf of the Dargaville community extend an invite to welcome you to Dargaville. We think it is important for new residents and business owners to feel part of our community and understand how all the community organisations integrate and collaborate with each other for the benefit of all.

The proposed project would take place on the strip of land between the two existing communities which has been sold to Auckland property developers, Viranda Partners Limited. Minutes of the meeting released to the Lifestyler say those attending took the opportunity express ideas and raise concerns during the first of more ‘constructive meetings’ to come. The meeting was opened by Bayleys in the North owner and director, Mark Macky who gave a report on the local property market and highlighted the increased demand for new amenities and housing in the area. Viranda co-founder and chairman, Andrew Guest, confirmed many provisional ideas, including a light industrial precinct, supermarket and hardware store — all delivered to a scale suitable for Mangawhai and built within the character of the area. He envisioned that accommodation would be required and suggested a high school was long overdue. Facility for retirement and aged care was also highlighted, and he said there has been strong interest from rest home operators. The developers TUBING

hoped to reassure the community that they were in ‘a period of consultation and open transparency’, where they hoped the local community could play a ‘meaningful part’ in the creation of the development. A commitment to supporting the Mangawhai Activity Zone, the local library and the Mangawhai Museum was also given during the meeting. ¢

Playgroup initiative u by Anna Harding

A new mobile pop-up play group called Puna Reo Playgroup is coming to the Kaipara and will be visiting Te Kopuru and Pouto from Monday July 24. The Dargaville Early Year Hub initiative is open to all children up to five years old, with a focus on those not currently enrolled in any early childhood education.

p The Dargaville Quilters club recently handed over $1,000 each to the Dargaville Fire Brigade and St John Dargaville as a result of their recent quilt exhibition entitled Kaipara 111. The Fire Brigade has plans for a new generator and a St John spokesman said it will help with training supplies.

p Puna Reo Playgroup coordinator Cerise Selkirk will be running a mobile play group in Waipoua, Te Kopuru and Pouto from Monday July 24

“This is a great time for the littlies to engage, play, learn and interact with other tamariki, and an opportunity to meet other families in a fun friendly environment and have loads of fun at the same time,” said play group coordinator Cerise Selkirk. Cerise recently finished working three years as kaimahi at Te Puna O Takiwira Kohanga Reo, a full Te Reo immersion child education centre. She has been working at the Dargaville Early Years Hub since early June and is looking forward to the play groups starting.

“I love kids and I love watching them learn. This is something I really want to do. Kids that are out of town will get interaction with kids their age, as it can be hard for parents to bring them into town every day.” Both playgroups will run from 10am1pm. The Te Kopuru playgroup will be held at the Saint Peter’s Church Hall on Wednesdays, with the Pouto group at the Pouto Primary School on Tuesdays. Contact Cerise for more information — 09 439 7861, 021 1125827 or cerise@outlook.co.nz. ¢

Museum’s birthday bash Students at sports day u by Anna Harding

u by Joanna Manson

Dargaville Museum’s ‘birthday bash’ is coming up on Sunday July 16 and will run from 10am-4pm

A group of six Dargaville athletes living with a physical disability recently took part in the Parafed Northland’s Junior Disability Sports Day in Whangarei.

p Margaret Tier with the display of tea pots, caddies and tea which will be part of the Dargaville Museum’s birthday bash ‘festival of tea’

This year marks the museum’s 32nd birthday. The ‘family fun day out’ is organised by the committee members and entry to all the events and museum will be free on the day. Other events include face painting, flax weaving, guess the object, rock painting, science and technology activities, demonstrations, music and a ‘festival of tea’. Dilmah New Zealand has donated

several different flavours of tea, including interesting combinations such as chocolate, turmeric, ginger and almond. Committee member and event organiser Margaret Tier has also organised a display of vintage teapots and tea caddies from personal and museum collections. Food will be available with sausage sizzles, soup and bread, scones with the tea, and more. ¢

Selwyn Park’s Joseph Tebbutt, Dargaville Primary School’s Saffron Searle and Jordy Wong, Dargaville Intermediate’s Ellie Weight and Trinity Peua, and Dargaville High School’s Kayne King all took part. The event boasted 50 participants aged between seven and 21 years from around the region, with the aim of connecting and inspiring Northland youth to become involved in sport of some sort — socially or competitively. Entrants experienced various track and field events, visually impaired sports, boccia, wheelchair basketball, powerchair football, badminton and taekwondo. Parafed Northland chairwoman Vicki Meyer says it was amazing to see so many take up the opportunity. “It’s awesome for disabled sport in the region,” she explained. “It’s great for Parafed Northland as an organisation too, proving there is demand for para-sport in our region.” In previous years the event has been well attended, with some going on to join either a club or Parafed Northland and be involved with regular organised sport.

p Dargaville Primary School’s Jordy Wong participating in long Jump

“Sport is such a powerful vehicle for young people to socialise and learn about themselves,” Meyer commented. “For someone who lives with a physical disability there is no difference.” The sports day — which is supported by the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation and NorthTec — doubled as a chance to form the Northland team to compete at the Halberg Junior Disability Games later this year. ¢

Lyndsey Bargh

For the team at Kaipara Physiotherapy the road to professional success has been one of study and training. Like any endeavour in the world of medicine and health, becoming a fully qualified Physiotherapist takes determination and years of dedication. The choice to get into this field of work is most often based on the altruistic wish to help others, and that is certainly one of the most rewarding factors about providing physio services to the small townships of the Kaipara. Lyndsey and the team put their skills to work ensuring that lives are repaired after accidents, eased away from pain and disability, and brought back to active wellbeing. It may take a long time to learn these skills, but the results seen when they are put into practice are more than worth the time taken in study and preparation.

ENGINEERS AREN’T BORN, THEY’RE FORGED BY LIFE LONG LEARNING AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF THE INDUSTRY, KNOWLEDGE IS THE SHARPEST TOOL.

Dedicated to life long learning to bring you the best property advice. ‘I left school at sixteen and a half, didn’t quite know what I wanted to do...but what I did know is that I just loved baking. My mother got my first job for me at a bakery in Newmarket. I started making lamingtons all day long, it was one boring day after another. After many months of the same now seemingly mundane task, I asked for a change. They let me cream the cakes and donuts for a while. Soon after that I had gained an interest in learning how to ice birthday and wedding cakes. I was extremely lucky they promoted me and allowed me to learn how to do so. This proved I could work my way up by asking and constantly improving myself as I went along. This led me to eventually owning a cake shop in Howick I could call my own. I had that shop for 11 years and ended up owning and managing a second one. As you can imagine, baking, icing and decorating cakes for that length of time wore my arms out to the point where I had to give it up and pick something else to do. Why did I choose Real Estate? Because I loved the idea of helping people into their homes. It was hard work let me tell you. I had to study — fifty exams and ten thousand dollars later, I was a newly licensed real estate agent! After spending ten years working for someone else I started up my own real estate business. I’ve spent twenty five years of my life in this business. I live by the words “learn and strive for better things in life, not only for oneself but for others as well”. — Jean Johnson

KEEPING OUR CUSTOMERS SAFE ON THE ROAD TAKES KNOWLEDGE & SKILL THAT’S WHY WE’RE ALWAYS IMPROVING BOTH! The automotive trades is one which has a lot of appeal for those considering a job which blends real world skills together with a passion for cars. Of course the reality of an apprenticeship repairing and maintaining our road fleet is not all high octane thrills, but there is definite scope to apply those hard-earned skills to everything from personal project vehicles to classic restorations. Working to keep a small community like Dargaville on the road, Daniel and the team at Morfett Autos see everything from company cars and utes through to veterans of the highway and the off road trail.

In the engineering workshop of Dargaville’s long established Farrand and Mason, up-and-coming apprentices get to grips with the business of heavy metal from both ends of the education spectrum. You’ll find some coming up through the ranks in the tried and tested manner, putting in hours under the tutelage of respected local engineers. You’ll also find at least one trainee augmenting his university studies with hours on the tools — 400 this summer alone to be precise. It’s all part of fostering new talent and providing a service to the community. Farrand and Mason boss Kevin knows what it’s like - he began as an apprentice here himself, moving up as he learned and keeping up to date with new technology. In recent years, this has meant arming himself with the skills to master locksmithing for homes, vehicles and safes to name a few and now he’s passing on that knowledge to a new generation. The message here is clear, engineering is a job that can take you places. The ability to repair and shape metal, to solve problems and keep the industry moving is always in demand. But it’s hard work and practicality, which earn the true mark of an engineering professional. A mind that can take apart a problem and see a solution, no matter what the tools and tech required.

Like all qualified plumbers, roofers and gasfitters, Grant came up from the humble beginnings and on-the-job lessons of an apprenticeship, serving his time with a seasoned veteran of the trade. Coming up through the ranks he learned the many other aspects of the job, from installing fireplaces and gas califonts through to ordering parts and helping source designer bathroomware for his clients. When the opportunity came to take the helm of his own business, back in Dargaville after a stint in Auckland city, he and his wife Roseanne (the administration and accounting side of the enterprise) took the leap into a new era. Now they’re training a new young apprentice and business is booming. There’s certainly scope to become your own boss with the right attitude in this vital trade.

GET CREATIVE Take a creative journey u by Andy Bryenton

There are many kinds of creativity, and many kinds of hobbies which embrace bringing something fresh and exciting into reality using only the imagination and a bit of hard-earned skill. Across the district we enjoy not only a wealth of talent to appreciate, but also the opportunity to exercise our own creative powers. Take, for example, the many successful artists who call the Kaipara home. From a plethora of small galleries and home studios through to large artists’ associations and display spaces in our local towns, there are plenty of places to appreciate the insight and skill of our Kaipara painters, sculptors, weavers, wood workers, photographers and jewellers, all of whom draw inspiration from our wonderful natural environment. There’s no better time of year than right now to take a trip through your own ‘back yard’, stopping off to see the work which these talented individuals have created.

Then again, winter is also the perfect time to take the plunge and learn a new creative hobby or craft of your own. From classes in quilting and sewing, local art workshops, on-line tutorials in painting, through to groups who will help foster musical talent, there’s a lot to choose from locally. Creativity takes many forms, from the classical art forms of the renaissance through to handy hobbies such as brewing one’s own craft beers, restoring classic motorcycles and cars, or re-purposing everyday items into sculpture. These days, an artist is as likely to use a welding torch as a brush and palette.

Arts awards to span district u by Anna Harding

The Kaipara Art Awards entries are now open and for the first time in its seven year history, the works will be exhibited in the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, Mangawhai Village Hall and the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville. The awards are a direct collaboration between Mangawhai Artists Inc and the Dargaville Arts Association. From this year, they plan to take turns hosting the exhibition opening and awards presentation. Mangawhai Artists Inc begins the cycle and will host the awards on Friday, September 22. The exhibition will then show at the Muddy Water’s Gallery in Dargaville after a few weeks. “This is a celebration of artistic excellence and is the pinnacle of achievement for artists in the Kaipara,” said the Kaipara Art Awards chair John Pickworth. There are four yet to be confirmed, cash prizes — first, judges’ award,

second and third. Last year’s first prize was $500. The awards are made possible because of the principal sponsor The Kaipara Lifestyler, and grant donations from Pub Charities New Zealand Ltd. Only artists who are part of a Kaipara district based art group can enter. There are two categories — two dimensional or three dimensional. The work must not have been exhibited before and must have been made within the last 12 months. Entries are limited to around 40–50 pieces, depending on what can fit in the exhibition. For more terms and conditions and entry forms visit www. nsmm.co.nz. ¢

Giving back to nature Dunnys — and what we do during our ‘daily visit’ are a bit like that other subject our mother never talked about — we were given our potty training, the nappies were removed and from then on we did our own learning! And since having our nappys taken off us we have all learned that ‘go and flush’ is what we do. Every day — or at least most days for most of us. That’s a lot of flushing. Imagine for a moment the immense infrastructure that our local councils have provided for this simple convenience — pun intended — where water is either captured in purpose-made dams or taken from existing rivers, piped for miles, chemically treated to drinking standard, and piped for more miles to our place so we can simply push the appropriate flush button — 1 or 2 — to send it for more miles to another treatment plant where it is again reconstituted chemically and piped yet again out to sea — or to a river — or somewhere on the planet!

It is estimated that every one of us has flushed away 6,500 litres of treated water a year since our nappies were taken off us. Imagine the proportion of the council rates that we pay that goes to pay for our flush button convenience. But like so many other aspects of daily living the economic and ecological cost of the ‘daily visit’ has been re-visited. In 2001 a composting toilet was produced in the USA specifically for boats. They called it AirHead. Boats call their toilets ‘heads’ in recognition of the historic use of a simple plank at the head of the ship back in the sailing ship era. ‘Going to the head’ was sometimes a hazardous necessity. And the USA development used air instead of water. Air head. This was certainly a different way to go. The toilet employed a compost medium to process the human waste and it worked. The toilet is effectively its own treatment plant. No water, no pipes, no smell. It is not surprising that the concept has been accepted world wide and has spread from boats to caravans and motor homes. Off-grid living is gaining a huge following world wide and the Airhead toilet offers this community an economic alternative that is totally in tune with nature without involving the permitting requirements of conventional dunnys. These toilets give back to Mother Earth. They retain our body’s natural separation

AUTO & MARINE

Inspiration and aspiration u by Andy Bryenton

While Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon continues to carve out a name for himself on the gravel and dirt of the world’s special stages in his wickedly modified Hyundai, he’s providing inspiration for more than a new generation of off-road drivers. Hyundai’s own designers have looked to the terrain-conquering i20 under his command for cues to build a brand new adventure crossover vehicle as well. Dubbed the i20 Cross, this entry into the hotly competitive adventure hatch or mini crossover market goes up against a wide range of competitors, just like its rally-bred inspiration. But rather than concentrating on raw speed, the i20 Cross focuses instead on city street practicality and comfort, with a suite of features designed to get the most out of day-to-day excursions. It certainly has the looks to punch above its weight in this style-conscious sector of the market. Boldly aggressive, with prominent roof rails and bumpers moulded with additional nudge bars, this is no diminutive version of the Tucson or Santa Fe, but a stylistic masterpiece in its own right, with a sense of velocity communicated through a ‘floating’ roof, sculpted wheel arches and swept-back lines. A higher ground clearance means not only the ability to conquer bumps and dips with aplomb, but also easier ingress and egress to a comfortable seating position. Function meets form in a pair of practical roof rails which

also lend an SUV-like touch to the overall silhouette. Once inside, drivers will discover that this is no stripped-out rally car, but a well appointed space which makes the daily commute considerably less stressful. Big car gadgetry such as rain sensing wipers, bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry and reversing camera come as standard, while the subtly understated interior puts all the instruments close to hand. There’s a swag of legroom and plenty of cargo space with folding rear seats and an ample boot, making this a more practical consideration than many comparatively sized ‘hot hatch’ models. And while the 1.4 litre engine under the hood is not tuned for snarling rally performance, its fuel economy figures and smooth quiet operation are just right for around town, with the option for weekend adventures. As we’ve seen with other crossover vehicles, this hot new segment of the market is all about two things — making

an impression and backing it up with handy practicality above and beyond that which is found in the average small car. Hyundai have delivered both with their

latest offering, and at an RRP of $27,990 plus on road costs, this rally-inspired but city refined machine is taking it to the competition like Hayden himself. ¢

Cold nights, winter delights u by Andy Bryenton

It’s cold outside, but that simply means it’s time for some comfort food and good old-fashioned entertainment this July. Treat yourself to a simple classic take out or drop by your local for a warm welcome and some hot music this month. Dargaville’s latest convenient takeaway spot comes from an unlikely place — the village Four Square. Grocery-man icon Cheeky Charlie is the new face of delicious fried chicken and chips in town, which make for the perfect cold day lunch or after work quick pickup. With plenty of sport on the telly a family feed of crispy-skinned chicken and seasoned potato fries is easy, economical and above all, fast. Because it’s from the Four Square you can also top up on those grocery essentials at the same time. Another Kiwi icon of the quick lunch is the humble pie — or the not so humble creations from the Aratapu Tavern’s ovens. These golden brown treats are the feature of the month for July, with a variety of flavours on offer and the chance to win a month’s worth of pies every time you bite. The Aratapu pie range comes thoroughly recommended

by our taste testers as the pinnacle of both pastry and fillings locally. The usual Texan-inspired menu continues to grow in popularity here too — and on the 7th it will be complemented by the sounds of the West, with the Northern Wairoa Country Music Club performing live. Across the district, the Three Furlongs in Kaiwaka is set to be rocked by the vocal talent of Ethan Conway, Australian star of ‘The Voice’. Ethan’s acoustic set is packed with favourites, delivered by a powerful performer whose popularity has only grown since his debut on the TV talent

quest. Pair up the show with dinner and enjoy a feast for both your taste buds and your ears — the grill at the Three Furlongs has gained a reputation for sizzling quality. Finally, it’s worth noting that this is the week just before school holidays. Why not treat the kids to a movie at the local Anzac Theatre — there’s plenty of superhero action on the schedule right now, along with the ever popular Minions of Despicable Me 3. Or sign up for the Dargaville Library’s school holiday programme for family fun with pets, vets, painting and creativity. ¢
