The dialogue was ordered by Justice Paul Heath when he handed down his judgement in late May. It had been hoped the parties could agree on the wording of declarations that would provide a settlement to the case.

However, Kaipara District Council chief commissioner John Robertson says agreement was not reached and outstanding matters will now go to full hearing in the Christchurch High Court on July 18, where Justice Heath

is currently presiding over the South Canterbury Finance fraud trial. The hearing will be relayed by video link to the High Court in Whangarei for interested ratepayers. Mr Robertson says the Mangawhai Ratepayer s and Residents Association’s decision to appeal against Justice Heath’s judgement had complicated matters. continued on page 5 …

Calvary

When a well-meaning priest hears too much during a confession, he must face both the threat of retribution and the dark forces gathering around him. A standout performance by Brendan Gleeson, backed up by Chis O’Dowd - this time taking a more serious priestly role than his comic turn in ‘Father Ted’.

When completed, the whare wananga will also be used as an after-school care facility and as an extra classroom if required.

Joseph and the Wiggles

Ernest & Celestine

A beautifully realized ‘animated watercolour’ which unfolds a world of mice and bears. The bears control the surface world, while the mice scurry underneath in fear of their ursine oppressors - that is, until Celestine the mouse and Ernest the bear strike up an unlikely friendship. Soon they’re on the run, pursued by the authorities who want to keep all animals segregated... An animated treat for young and old.

Fantail

Set in a west Auckland service station, this is a touching story of family, hope and the ties which bind - as well as a cracking good piece of local film making from an up and coming cinematographer.

Belle

Belle is the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay, raised by her great uncle Lord Mansfield. Even though she grows up in a lifestyle of privilege and wealth, her skin colour means she is not accepted in society.

 Selwyn Park School student Joseph Tebbutt and his mum Erica spent a memorable morning with the Wiggles in Whangarei last Thursday. “During the show, they kept referring to Joseph, waving to him and coming over to high five him. Suffice to say, Joseph felt very special and even had a song dedicated to him in the show.” Voting for Selwyn Park School’s Dargaville Westpac Person of the Year 2014 fundraiser is still open. People can vote for their favourite nominee at Westpac Dargaville until the end of July. Votes cost $1 with all proceeds benefiting the school.

Delay on Northland Local champions local government proposal to defend world titles

Northlanders will have to wait until after September’s general election to find out whether their local government will be reorganised.

World champion unicyclists Sam La Hood and Christian Huriwai will defend their titles in Montreal, Canada this July.

Last year the commission put out a draft proposal that would combine the region’s three territorial local authorities and the Northland Regional Council into one council, with a single major, councillors elected by ward and community boards to protect local interests. The commission’s proposal attracted 1685 submissions, with 90% opposed. After a further round of oral submissions, the commission had been expected to release a final proposal by the end of June. Quiz night helps St John fundraising  by Colin Patterson

The best minds in Dargaville were all at the local fire station last Friday in a quiz night held to raise money for the local St John Ambulance.

 With 15 pigs, weighing an average of nearly 45kg, there were plenty of satisfied hunters in Tangiteroria last weekend

The local tavern was headquarters for the Great Tangiteroria Pig Hunt, an annual competition for hunters. Tavern manager Sheryl Johnson says this year’s event was a big success. “It was awesome. We had 42 hunters and 15 pigs. That’s the same number of hunters as last year but a lot more pigs.” She says pigs could be killed anywhere, not just in Tangiteroria. Competitors hunted from Wellsford in

the south right through to the Far North. But they had to bring their pigs to the tavern for weighing between 4pm and 5pm on Saturday or from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday. Darren Meyer picked up a sponsors’ prize worth $200 for the heaviest boar weighing at 56kg. The trophy for the best average weight pig went to Wayne Doherty, whose 44.8kg beast won a game trail camera worth $400 and vouchers worth $500. There were also possum and eel competitions to keep younger ones interested. At the end of the event all the pigs were auctioned off to raise money for next year’s prizes. The top price was $80. Ms Harrison says she is grateful to the event sponsors who made everything possible, to the whanau riders who did all the catering and for the tavern staff for their hard work. 

The event was a huge success and is expected to raise more than $2,000 to help the Northern Wairoa St John committee buy urgently needed training equipment. Although the fire station was filled to capacity with 20 teams of six, many more were turned away because of a lack of space. “It was the first one I’ve ever organised,” says organiser John Tillick. “I had no idea of what response we’d get. It was above my expectations. We could have filled 40 tables.” Mr Tillick says they took in $2,500 on the night. St John would like to thank

local businesses for donating all the prizes. Mr Tillick says the raffles proved even more successful than hoped, although there are costs associated with catering to be paid. Once those have been deducted, he expects the final result to be between $2,200 and $2,300. While that is a good start, Mr Tillick says the committee still has a long way to go to reach its goal of $12,000. A number of initiatives to raise the remaining money are being considered. The quiz was won by a team put together by the Rotary Club of Dargaville. 

Jetz gear up for jubilee New radio recruits

 by Joanne Speechly

 by Joanne Speechly

Ruawai Jetz will take a trip down memory lane this September to mark the netball club’s half century milestone.

Big River FM’s newest recruits are looking forward to their six month internship at Dargaville’s community radio station.

 Jetz Blue Netball Team (Premier Grade)

The club, which has been associated with the Northern Wairoa Netball Centre for 50 years this season, is planning a weekend Jubilee and is calling on all members past and present to get involved. “We have Jubilee committee meetings every second Friday and anyone who would like to be involved is welcome to come along. People can contact me through our email ruawaijetz@gmail. com or keep up-to-date by following our Ruawai Jetz facebook page,” says club captain Kyla Johnson. “When people register for the Jubilee, they can choose what and how much they want to sign up for during the weekend and the price of their ticket will be relative to their choices.

“The first step is to get in touch to fill out a registration form and we’ll go from there.” Jubilee weekend will start with some early afternoon games on Saturday, September 20, followed by a bus trip to Tokatoka Tavern, honouring the club’s longstanding tradition of stopping off at the tavern on the way home from Saturday netball games. A social will be held on Saturday evening at the town hall and the weekend’s activities will wind down with Sunday brunch at the sports club. “So far, we’ve come up with over 150 names for current and past members but if there is anyone else who would like to come to the Jubilee or has names of players, we’d love to hear from you.” 

 Big River FM interns Jordan, Shivaughn, Hailz and Ben will work with Te Kopuru students Diane, Jaeshana and Nikau to help them get Kia Ora FM back on-air 24/7

Shivaughn Marurai, Jordan Hart, Ben Stevens and Hailz Nordell have recently graduated from a 20 week broadcasting course at NZ School of Radio — Tauranga and will now refine their newfound skills at Big River FM. During their first week on the job, the interns visited Kia Ora 107.7 FM, based at Te Kopuru School and were given a tour of the studio by Year 8 students Nikau Swaans, Jaeshana Kira

Big River FM station manager Anaru Tana was impressed with the students attitude and the school’s on-air studio. “It all looks very professional and our aim is for the interns to work with students each week, and help them gain confidence and learn new skills.” Te Kopuru School principal Lee Anderson said the plan is to have Kia Ora FM running 24/7. 

Kaurilands seeks community help to expand

Sophia’s special day

 by Colin Patterson

An organisation that has provided supported living opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities for almost 25 years is seeking public help as it begins a major expansion project. The Kaurilands Skills Centre was established in 1990 by Mike Mudford and other former IHC workers who wanted to set up a facility in the Northern Wairoa. After initially operating from a house in Dargaville, trustees bought a farm in Tokatoka and Kaurilands moved out to the country more than 20 years ago. There are two houses on the property providing supported living for 19 people with intellectual disabilities. The property also has its  Kaurilands resident Jeroen Kraayenhof proudly displays one of his workshop creations own laundry and workshops, providing opportunities for residents She says current houses provide to gain skills. To meet this demand the applications to the ASB Community organisation wants to build a third Foundation, New Zealand Lotteries house at Tokatoka and to rent a house and local businesses. “I have to in Dargaville to provide an urban base. look everywhere.” Ms Duncan says trustees don’t have She says Kaurilands receives Ministry a set figure for the cost of building of Health funding to provide care and another house. “But it could cost at services for each resident. On June 29 club members put on a very special afternoon tea for Sophia Tebbutt, the twin sister of Joseph who is confined to a wheelchair and has some challenging health conditions. Sophia was able to invite nine of her friends. The children played games and went for a ride on a fire truck, thanks to the Dargaville Volunteer Brigade.

New group hits the dirt “We have the land, we have the trees, we just need some people to help plant them.” Otamatea HarbourCare secretary, Mark Vincent says the recently established society has been given a helping hand to get started with a grant of 1,700 trees from the NZ Landcare Trust/WWF Reconnecting Northland programme. Local farmers Les and Vicki Kenworthy-Thompson have come on board with the project, having provided and fenced off a waterway on their property next to SH12 at Huarau, opposite Huarau Station Road. “This

has suited us with our ongoing planting programme,” said Les. “We have been planting on the dairy farm for a number of years and this will be a continuation of that. We really appreciate the assistance from the landcare group.” The first planting is scheduled for Saturday July 12, starting at 9.30am. Anyone wanting to help can contact him on 09 431 7353 or 021 0829 8037. A further planting day is scheduled for later in the month involving pupils from Matakohe School. 

Wild gourmet thrills in our local habitat  by Andy Bryenton

It’s a celebration of food gone wild — with exotic ingredients matched to perfection with the artisan-crafted beers and ciders of a Kiwi original. That’s right — the Monteith’s Wild Food Challenge is on again, with restaurants around the nation sharpening up their knives to deliver an eclectic menu of dishes. wild side is the Aratapu Tavern, where hosts Donice and Richard are looking to expand upon last year’s Wild Food Challenge success. Back then, they entered the competition for the first time with a dish they called ‘The Roar’, a spicy, fullflavoured venison chili, combining a little of Donice’s Texan culinary heritage with the rich, textural complexity of Kiwi deer. The judges were wowed, not just by the dish but by the effort thrown into the competition by the Aratapu team. This year all the stops have been pulled out — just listen to this description of ‘When Bambi Met Porky’ — a minifeast with a wild tapas theme. There’s a cucumber salad starter topped with a wild boar and venison slice, served with a with spicy jalapeno sour cream dressing. Next come the Aratapu’s world famous pork ribs, a mini pie stuffed with venison chili and topped with capsicum chutney. Follow that up with a mini

muffaletta (a hearty, cajun-style hot sandwich) made with Monteith’s Barrel Aged Porter slow roasted venison. Layer this between baked and lightly toasted kumara bread with cheese and olive chutney, then complete the picture with kumara sticks on the side, finished with pear wedges with blue cheese, and a chili sliver wrapped in prosciutto and drizzled with passionfruit sauce.

This very special dish is available for a limited time only, during the running of this year’s Wild Food Challenge. It’s well worth a bite — because this year the Aratapu’s kitchen could beat all comers to become the Wild Food capital of New Zealand. Only time (and the judges) will tell. Until then, best to trust the evidence of your own taste buds. 

It was the first screening of filmmaker Dave Perrett’s production made to mark the town’s 150th anniversary. Scores of townspeople and former residents walked the red carpet into the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, eagerly anticipating what was to come. “It was a really good night,” says Terri Donaldson of the Maungaturoto Residents Association. “It was a great movie. There are not many people in town who aren’t in it.” She says copies of the DVD were almost sold out and more will be ordered.

As an accessible means of creative expression for the local community, entries are on the rise and the show itself is becoming increasingly entertaining. In order to attract an appreciative audience the WAG committee are determined to create a show that has the audience spellbound. New lighting design, sound engineering and performances by Circus Kumarani will add to the show’s wow factor and artistic team member Tom Gomes will help to add authenticity to this year’s Brazilian Carnival theme. Dennise Brownlie, one of WAG’s Artistic Team says ‘having Kumarani on board is great. They will bring a real carnival atmosphere. They are so very talented’. Following the record numbers that entered WAG13, organisers are hoping for a similar turnout for 2014 and indications of intent received so far, give the organisers comfort that WAG14 will be a success. However, entries are closing soon. A third public performance at 7pm on Friday, August 22, has been added to this year’s line-up and the two other

Specialist care for those who live to ride  by Andy Bryenton

Motorcyclists can be pretty particular about their machines, in a way which most car drivers find a little obsessive. From meticulously polished chrome to a galaxy of custom parts, from airbrushed flames to highly-tuned engines, there’s an undeniably special bond between bike and rider. It doesn’t matter if you’re hitting the highway on a fire-breathing Japanese monster like Suzuki’s Hayabusa or a finely crafted Ducati, or cruising with a classic marque like Harley Davidson or Triumph — the bike becomes more than just transport. And that means, when it comes time for servicing, WOFs or repairs, it’s important to choose someone who shares this passion. That’s why Dargaville and West Kaipara riders must be pleased to note the opening of a new motorcycle repair, service and warranting service here in town. Because while we are blessed with an abundance of professionals when it comes to rural and off road bikes, road bikers have felt a little missed out of late. All that’s changed with the expansion of

the Dargaville Warrant and Repair centre into motorcycle maintenance, with a specialist motorbike mechanic on site and specialised facilities now in place to take care of everything from cafe racers to cruisers and choppers. The Warrant and Repair Centre was the perfect place to accommodate the needs of motorcyclists for a number of reasons. Many people will know their incumbent WOF inspector Brent Nurse, himself a fan of big classic bikes and a rider for many years. Now he’s joined by fully qualified motorcycle mechanic Harlin Munn, who adds his expertise to the mix. Perhaps more importantly, visitors to the Centre will likely have noted the many paintings, photos and magazines covering custom culture and racing which adorn the waiting area. The team here live, breathe and likely dream about classic cars and bikes — when your ‘baby’ is with them, it’s in good hands! 

Evolution of the X Factor  by Andy Bryenton

If anyone was going to carve out a middle ground in the modern battle between ‘crossover’ SUV-pretenders and the ever-pricier ‘real deal’, it was going to be a company who understand that grunt doesn’t have to mean checker-plate and exposed welds. Following on from the success of their DMAX ute (judged by serious offroad publication Australian 4x4 Action their ute of the year in 2013), Japanese truck makers Isuzu have brought back a badge that’s still remembered fondly in New Zealand. And, more pointedly, a badge that still gets out there spattered

with mud on any given weekend. We’re talking about the Isuzu MU — and the great news is that the rugged, willing little off-roader of the 1990s has returned all grown up. The New MU-X is built around the high-ground-clearance, nicely balanced DMAX chassis, and comes fitted with

 Rugged underpinnings and truck-engine proven mechanicals lie beneath the slick surface of MU-X

the same torquey turbo diesel mill, good for 380 Newton-Metres and 130 Kilowatts. That’s a whole lot of go when applied to a ute that’s at home lugging heavy loads, and so it’s more than ample to propel the voluminous MU-X, feeling quiet and unruffled by city driving and smoothly competent on the highway. Make no mistake, you can tell that there’s a serious diesel under the hood, but the transmission (though a box which has honest-to-goodness high and low ratios for real mud-slinging) delivers all that torque with wellmannered understatedness. Drivers of the original MU will surely recognise the power of what is still the only 4x4 built by truck makers. Hard-

wearing internals and bulletproof engine build quality are key here, but what has changed out of all proportion is the level of luxury offered by the MU-X. Leather seats, touch screen with reversing camera, drop-down DVD players for the kids… this is an SUV in the mould of the Range Rover rather than the Willy’s jeep! So, the MU has grown up, and now offers the same good value for money and real off-road abilities and towing power with a far comfier ride and trim level. If your adventures take you and the family off the tarmac, this is one to test — a worthy contender and a good continuation of the MU badge for 2014.  THE HIGHLY ACCLAIMED

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

School holiday fun at the library Finding activities to keep the younger ones amused during school holidays can be quite a mission. That’s especially the case when it’s cold and wet outside. But Dargaville Library has some activities that aim to amuse and educate younger children, while taking a little of the pressure off parents. Wednesday July 9 is Bananas in Pyjamas Day at the library. Wear your pyjamas to the library, listen to a story and take part in the colouring competition. All the fun takes place between 10.30 and 11.30am. On the following Wednesday, July 16, it will be Photo Day at the library. After listening to a story, kids will make a cool photo frame. Then they will strike a pose and hey presto! Again, the fun takes place between 10.30 and 11.30am. 

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dividing and ruling the Kaipara (Re: ‘Beneath the Surface’ — Kaipara Lifestyler — July 1 2014, page 4) Never forget that the ratepayers in Mangawhai are the innocent party. All credit is due to a succession of highly capable and dedicated members of our democratically elected representative group (the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents’ Association) for doing everything in their power acting on our behalf to prevent the predation that was facilitated by this ‘government’s’ Ministry of Local Government which has since dismantled our democratically elected council and imposed commissioners who are now using our media to garner support for their fascistic, urgent demands that WE comply with their extortion to pay for the mistakes that their masters allowed. 74 years ago we sent our young men off to fight fascism and now we’re sitting by and watching as it insidiously takes over our country. Whose side are YOU on ? If you are feeling threatened by what is happening in the Kaipara, write to Ministers of Parliament, Members of Parliament in Opposition and to your media.
