Dargaville Kindergarten’s cockatiels, Sarah and Sam, now have a spacious new home to fly in, thanks to the pre-schoolers and a few helping hands.

“The children did most of it themselves,” says teacher and project manager, Marisa Du Toit, “it was a big project and they have been incredibly persistent and determined to finish it.” It has taken around two months to complete and began with a trip to ITM Building Centre to choose materials which they bought at discounted prices. “They’ve done a really good job,” says Brent Steed from ITM, “there’s obviously a few budding carpenters among them.” They then went to work sawing timber, measuring and cutting chicken wire, and hammering nails. “They worked together as a team to build the bird house,” says head teacher Heather Moselen, “this is all part of their learning experiences at kindergarten.” Previously, Sarah the cockatiel, had a small enclosure but she now has room to fly, and have company. “Sarah has a boyfriend,” says the children in unison. Sam the cockatiel joins her much to the children’s excitement of possible baby cockatiels.

While gardening she came across a large amount of rubbish and decided to recycle some of the material for her entry in the Paparoa Wearable Arts Gala, August 24. “I’ve found aluminum cans, bottles, broken glass, a coffee machine, even a stereo,” says Colleen who moved to Tinopai in February. While there is a “Rubbish” category, she plans to enter the “Bizarre Bra” as well as the “Curious Codpiece” categories but isn’t giving any details away about her garments wanting them to be a surprise. As a full time fibre artist, her skills will come in handy. She makes ‘one off’ original clothes and plans to sell them on long weekends and around Christmas time on her deck when the traffic increases on the road to Tinopai. New grants for tourism Flat out and tasty in Dargaville by Paul Campbell
Kaipara tourism businesses are being encouraged to see if they meet the criteria for applications to the $28 million Tourism Growth Partnership announced by Prime Minister and Tourism Minister, John Key. “This is a new initiative which will provide a great opportunity for the industry and I want to encourage Northland to get involved,” said Northland MP, Mike Sabin. The $28 million will be made available over four years, supporting innovative projects that will create new opportunities and overcome barriers to growth in the tourism sector. The fund will be a contestable coinvestment programme, with every approved project receiving up to 50 per cent of the required funding from government. “Tourism is one of the lifeblood’s of the Northland economy, contributing close to $100m to GDP in 2012, and providing around 4,500 jobs,” Mr Sabin added. “Northland is the place where New Zealand’s story can be told authentically and the icons of our

Now Dargaville boasts its own dedicated pizza restaurant, opening this week in the main street of the riverside town. Mr Pizza is the name of this new establishment, and piping hot pizza pie is their game, with a menu ‘leaked to the press’ offering all the classic toppings and combinations which you’d expect from the pizza pros. Proprietor Raj and his team of chefs have plenty of experience, and they expect this new restaurant to garner a popular local following. The Mr Pizza recipe is for fast,

In a ‘blast from the past’ the Kauri Museum is to stage a series of ‘Dowson Magic Lantern’ shows, named after Eggbert John Dowson — Bert to his family — who once travelled Northland giving slide shows to rural and town communities. Three very successful years will be marked by the Dargaville Arts Association with a members’ exhibition from July 23 to August 6, at 108 Victoria Street in Dargaville. “This is to be a celebration of our three years working together and to present new artworks from the 40-plus members who form this community association, and who have created various milestones to their credit,” said association chair, Allan Mortensen. “Among these were the opening of the Muddy Waters Gallery, on the corner of Parenga and Kapia Streets and working with the Mangawhai
Artists group to present the Kaipara Arts Awards at the Matakohe Kauri Museum, in 2011, again last year, and of course now preparing for the upcoming exhibition this year.” On the drawing board for the association is a new brochure to complement its existing website and Facebook connection as well as a continuation of its work in holding art demonstration workshops and art activities for children.

Dargaville Community Cinema Trust secretary, Jacoba Puharich, encourages budding filmmakers to take part in the fourth short film competition. Jacoba says this year is special because it’s the first time judging can take place in the brand new Anzac Theatre in the War Memorial Hall on Hokianga Road. “It’s really exciting,” says Jacoba, “it’s always been our goal to create a space which can be used by the community.”
Films are a maximum length of eight minutes and can be across all genres but must relate to the Kaipara. All ages can enter with an open, secondary school, and primary school category. “Creativity, entertainment value and relevance to the Kaipara are the three main points judges will be looking for.” She adds the trust has a camera that can be loaned out to interested filmmakers. Jacoba says she has been liaising with the organisers of the Outlook for Someday Project who will provide a free film workshop for young people,

Four local schools in environment awards Projects involving everything from disappearing native frogs to re-emerging kiwi are among 25 school initiatives to share this year’s $20,000 Northland Regional Council Environmental Curriculum Awards, with four awards going to Kaipara schools. The annual awards foster excellence in environmental education, with schools eligible for up to $2,000 each for their efforts to educate children on the region’s environment. In all, 23 Northland recipients will receive between $200 and $1,700 each for their 25 projects. Regional councillor Bill Rossiter says the awards recognise and support the
environmental education efforts put in by more than 2,200 Northland students in 140 classes and/or school student environmental groups. “It’s also great to once again see a good geographic spread with eight of our winning schools based in the Far North, eleven in the Whangarei district and four in Kaipara,” he said. Music, Matinees and Cowboys at the Empire by Brian Eastwood
For a young man around Dargaville town in the forties and fifties decades the Empire Theatre was the place to be seen. Wearing sports coat and tie, with hair slicked down, it was also the place to check out the other guys and girls. Three changes of program showed each week. Craftily arranged, there was a double movie feature on Saturday night and an appropriate matinee for the younger set, often a Western serial and cartoons on Saturday afternoon. But if you couldn’t make it on Saturday night there was a rerun of the same ‘pictures’ on Monday night. On Thursday and Friday night there was a double feature, usually screening a shoot-em-up cowboy show with perhaps a crime movie. A complete change of program came on Tuesday and Wednesday to round off your movie week.

p The days of the old Empire theatre are now long gone
Typical of shows in 1942 was ‘Birth of the Blues’, starring Bing Crosby and Mary Martin. Billboards told of ‘music from the heart of Dixie, shuffling dances from New Orleans docks, wailing saxophones and singing trombones’. Although a Victoria Street frontage had ‘Empire Theatre’ in large letters across the top, that was not the picture theatre. After Williams Ball and Fannon, now Jack Fannon Ltd, built their new shop in 1924 they bought two shops next door. Demolishing them both in 1929, they erected that two storied building that is still there. On the bottom floor was an early style arcade, with a walkway that led along to the Empire Theatre, built back off the street eight years earlier in 1916. Front left was Miss A. R. Thurston’s Milk Bar, now Murdoch’s Empire Luncheonette and from where ice cream boys came at half time to stand in the theatre aisles and sell their wares. A hairdresser occupied the shop on the right front, with two smaller shops behind it. 1937 saw a major rebuild of the theatre. It took a couple of months but North Auckland Times reported that the original theatre had been really transformed. Local tradesmen did the job with main contractors, builder B. G. Smith, electrical work by McKay Electrical and heating and ventilation by Phillips and Collard. Architecturally designed for 1,000 patrons it was state of the art, right up there with New Zealand’s top
movie houses. It looked like a big red corrugated iron shed on the outside but inside it really lived up to its billing of ‘New Empire Theatre Deluxe’. Amalgamated Theatre owners, Michael and P.J. Moodabe, arrived for the grand opening of the stylish movie theatre on Friday, July 30 1937, together with town dignitaries and Dargaville Mayor, F.A. Jones. A top program was shown, with a first half of latest Fox news followed by a series of ‘shorts’. The main feature was ‘The Holy Terror’ starring Jane Withers, Anthony Martin and Joan Davies. For the next thirty-five years the Empire Theatre was a social focal point, entertaining and pleasing town people and country folk. But television and videos slowly took over with readily available films to watch at home. By October 1984 it was all over. McKay Properties had bought the building, renting it out to a clothing factory working in the old building. Over the next ten years at various times, a laundry, an aluminum joinery workshop and the ‘Big Pineapple’ fruit and vegetable market traded from there. But McKay Properties realised in 1994 that there was too much risk in letting the empty 78-year-old building just fall down. It was demolished with timber going to Auckland’s Kauri Timber Warehouse and the corrugated iron sold off locally. Within a few weeks the old landmark had gone. ¢

and style from the first generation of the Corolla through the 1980s, the 1990s and into the new century is like looking at a diagram of the evolution of man, with a steep gradient tracing out the addition of ABS, traction control, stability control, airbags — in fact, the whole suite of modern automotive essentials. The 2013 GX model may sit at the bottom end of Toyota’s price range, just a touch under $30k. But it sits at the bottom of this impressive family tree as well, descended from the car your dad, mum uncle, brother or mate is statistically very likely to have driven somewhere in the past few decades. It’s still the kind of car which you can slip into and be comfortable with straight off the lot, and it’s still a practical tool for in-city work, with easy parking, room to manoeuvre and a voluminous cargo space for its size. The engineers and designers at Toyota have captured the sense of ‘go-anywhere, do-anything’ which made the Corolla’s ancestors such local heroes, and given it a shot of modernity. Fieldays in Mystery Creek may have been a good one for Ford in New Zealand, but this was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg for their popular Ranger ute, which has topped nationwide sales figures for the last two months running. Boosted by a strong showing in the agricultural sector, 483 Rangers have driven off Ford dealership yards and off to work in May, topping April’s efforts. “I’ve never been more excited about Ford’s future than right now,” says Neale Hill, Ford New Zealand Managing Director. “We have such an exciting lineup of vehicles, offering great value. And it’s fantastic to see customers responding so positively.
