p Queen’s Birthday weekend was a creative experience for people who took part in the Dargaville Arts Association Workshop Weekend. Budding artists and singers from the Kaipara and further afield came to town for a series of two-day workshops on painting with Pauline Gough, vocal harmony with Maura and Peter Flower and making jewellery with Jenny Crundwell. Ms Gough says her workshop went well with eight eager students. “We had a lot of fun. We held it in my garage and we were able to dry our paintings outside.” The event concluded with a dinner and fundraising auction at the Northern Wairoa Hotel. Association chairman Allan Mortensen said all events were well attended and the auction was a great success. Money raised will be used to help support the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville, which is an outlet for artwork produced by association members.

Last month High Court Justice Paul Heath ruled that the council acted unlawfully in building the EcoCare sewerage scheme and then on several subsequent occasions increasing rates to cover cost overruns on the project. However, Justice Heath refused to order repayment of illegally-charged rates, saying they had been validated

by legislation passed by Parliament. He did order a tele-conference between the parties to be held after June 20, at which he would consider counsel’s submissions on his judgement and possible declarations to resolve outstanding matters. In a posting on its Facebook page, Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents

Association chairman Bruce Rogan said the parties were now talking to each other. “The situation is very fluid, with extensive legal review and discussion under way, including new discussions between the MRRA and the Commissioners, initiated by them, which are productive, cordial and candid.” continued on page 4 …

Shane Pumipi is one happy dragon, even though there is no fire coming out his nostrils. The 24-year-old former Dargaville High student made his debut for the St George Illawarra Dragons earlier this month, fulfilling a dream of playing in the world’s toughest rugby league competition. His mother, Dargaville High’s deputy principal Takiri Pumipi is stoked at her son’s success and says her extended whanau were glued to the television as Shane made his first appearance against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Unfortunately, it was not a winning debut, as the Dragons lost 29–10. “He was so nervous before the game, because he was playing above his grade,” says Mrs Pumipi. “He did 24 tackles. Talks underway to settle Mangawhai rates dispute Mr Rogan says the discussions have made progress. “I believe we are getting an open-minded hearing on proposals to resolve the situation. But there’s a lot of work to do.” He says both the association and the council would like to agree on joint declarations that the judge will sign off and which will then have the force of law.” In the meantime, the association is advising its members to continue their rates strike. “We will come back to you as soon as possible with advice about whether or not to pay any of the withheld rates. Pending this advice, please patiently wait a little longer in the knowledge that we are hard at work advancing your interests.” Meanwhile the council says it is owed $6.3 million in rates from residents taking part in the rates strike. Council chief executive Steve Ruru says the council dealt with the loss of income in the 2013/14 financial year by deferring a number of roading projects, including reseals, pavement rehabilitation and sealing unsealed roads. These projects had been included on the New Zealand Transport Agency’s programme for local works and would have attracted a subsidy from NZTA. As the council was unable to come up with its share of the capital cost,

the projects were deferred. But if the outstanding rates are paid the council will be able to proceed. “There’s two years of work we’re proposing to do in one,” he says. “We’ve got $17.5 million in capital works to do. It’s usually $8 to $9 million.” However, if the council is unable to do the work in the 2014/15, that could pose problems. “If we don’t get the rates, theoretically we could lose the subsidy. If there are any problems we’ll talk to NZTA.” ¢

New principal for Ruawai College u by Colin Patterson

Ruawai College’s new principal is looking forward to the challenge of the job. Glenis Woodhead, who is currently Assistant Principal Head of English at Garin College in Nelson, has been appointed to replace Stephen Fordyce who is retiring after 13 years. Mrs Woodhead starts her new job on July 21. Garin College is an integrated Catholic school. However, Mrs Woodhead says she expects no problems returning to the state system. “Garin College is the first time I’ve taught in a Catholic school.” Before Garin, Mrs Woodhead taught at Macleans College, a school in the Auckland suburb of Bucklands Beach with a roll of more than 2,500, making it one of New Zealand’s largest secondary schools. Ruawai College with about 190 students is a big change but one Mrs Woodhead is looking forward to. “Ruawai College is a very successful

school with fabulous ERO reports. It’s a matter of finding what works and helping it work even better.” Mrs Woodhead says schools like Ruawai College need to ensure they offer courses that attract students, especially with increasing consolidation of rural land ownership meaning fewer families living on the land — and fewer potential students. College board of trustees chairman John Blackwell says there was keen interest in the principal’s position and trustees went through a robust appointment process. He says they flew Mrs Woodhead up for an interview and she impressed members with her knowledge of the school and her awareness of Maori culture. “She is an eager learner.” Mrs Woodhead has a grown up family. She and her husband will live in Pahi.

Engaging and entertaining, the Matanui Performance is a Playworks production, comprised of a Theatre in Education play and a Drama in Education forum, which explores the challenges young Northland people face, including alcohol, teen pregnancy, sexual abuse and suicide. Matanui — the mountain — looks over a small Northland community where everything seems safe and ordinary, where bad gets forgotten and good goes unnoticed. However, relationships, dreams and dark histories collide as young Wiremu and his friends try to make sense of it all. Creating a platform for reflection and discussion about youth aspirations and challenges, the play makes the audience aware of causal factors in youth suicide. It presents positive role models, positive endings and strives to give a powerful collective experience, which is empowering for the audience. Registrations are now open for a free workshop that will help aspiring film-makers learn the secrets of their craft.

A proposed liquor store in Paparoa will not proceed in the face of community opposition. The applicants decided to withdraw their application after it attracted 49 submissions, all opposed. Opponents also presented a petition with more than 450 signatures. Applicants’ agent Georgie Robertson subsequently wrote to Kaipara District Council. “It is fairly obvious that the community is widely opposed to the licence issuing for the premises. In light of this, my client has decided to

listen to the community and withdraw the application for a liquor licence.” Residents opposed to the proposed outlet claim there is no need for another liquor outlet, as there is already a liquor store in Maungaturoto just 10 minutes away, while the Paparoa Hotel and the Cruiser Café are licensed premises. Some objectors were also concerned the planned location was next to a children’s playground. ¢

Selwyn Park School launched a month-long fundraiser on Monday, which will not only benefit students but also recognises some exceptional people in the community. Dargaville Westpac Person of the Year 2014 is a new initiative that runs until Thursday, July 3 and six people have been nominated for the top honour. “We want to encourage all of Dargaville and all of the nominees friends and family to go into Westpac Dargaville to vote. If people would like to vote but can’t get into the bank, they can ask someone to vote on their behalf,” says Erica Tebbutt, who is helping to organise the event. Votes cost $1 each, donations are welcome and the bank will also be running a raffle. Ray White have also offered their support and will donate

$10 from every property tidy-up job they get throughout the duration of the fundraiser. One lucky customer will win back the entire cost of their tidy-up. In these days of massive torque and turbo-charged excess, 15 horsepower doesn’t seem like much. But 15 horses is all that one of our most popular rural icons has needed to drive Kiwi farming, for close to two decades. The recipe for the DR200 certainly needs no fixing, though over the years a vast array of aftermarket add-ons have indeed surfaced, up to and including a back pillion rack for the trusty farm dog! knobbly, grippy tyres, a powerful halogen headlight and a double side stand — to avoid having to lean the machine up against fence posts! Pass mark for centre upgrades It’s all change at the Dargaville Warrant and Repair Centre, with a fresh focus on motorcycles and quads adding to their already busy schedule of cars, vans, and utes. The government’s vehicle testing operations inspector was in town to see if local WOF providers made the grade, and his visit was a resounding success. The green light has been given for WOF service expansions here, adding a new motorcycle mechanic, auto repairs, and a new source for US-imported quads and UTVs. This growing and expanding business is certainly one to watch downtown in Dargaville! ¢

Europe was the original home of the hot hatchback — a class defined by cars like the Peugeot 205 turbo, the original Golf GTI and the Renault Clio sport. Front-drive, compact firecrackers with plenty of get up and go, designed to put a smile on drivers’ faces for a fraction of the cost of a supercar. But the original crop of hot hatches were surpassed by two things — the desire for better comfort and safety was one. The rise of Japanese auto dominance was the other, as the torch was passed to rivals like Honda’s CR-X and Civic Type R for a new generation. Now things have come full circle with the arrival of the new Euro-spec Honda Civic, a car which seamlessly blends the best of the hot hatch’s European roots with a forward-looking Japanese aesthetic, and the engineering knowhow of Honda’s development labs. The result is a handsome beast, with design cues taken from previous classics (note that CR-X like split rear glass) and a pleasantly surprising combination of fun and practicality for 21st-century drivers. On the road, the Euro Civic commands attention with its distinctive looks and that retro-futurist rear light bar. But it’s the balance and poise of the little four-door hatch on the open highway which truly impress. The five-speed box rarely needs to come out of third gear in town, but find the twisting rural tarmac and those wide-open gears hit their stride, delivering plenty of smiles as the corners keep coming. Students learn about career choices u by Colin Patterson

Kaipara district students have lots of career choices available to them and don’t have to leave the area to get good jobs. That was the message for the second Dargaville High School trades and careers day held last week. Some of Dargaville and Northland’s major employers spent a day in the school hall, talking to senior students and giving them an idea of the job opportunities they could offer and what they expect from potential employees. Among the companies taking part were Silver Fern Farms, Toll Holdings, Northpower, ITM, ANZ, BNZ, Newman Engineering, Farrand and Mason, and NorthSouth Multi Media. Organiser Andrew Wade says he is pleased with support from local employers, although it took a lot of hard work to bring everything together. He says the day had an important message. “Instead of Dargaville being seen as a town where you grow up in and leave,

we want young people to know you can grow up and stay. There are career opportunities here.” He says the day encourages senior students to interact with the community. “We want to get the kids to experience the workforce before they leave school. If they work part-time or casual, they get a work ethic and are part of the community.” The day also featured appearances from a fire engine, a forklift and the Jaws of Life. There was also a 12-minute video showing career opportunities in forestry and farming. Senior students from Opononi Area School and Ruawai High School also took part in the day. Mr Wade would like to thank the businesses who took part and the Rotary Club of Dargaville whose sponsorship made the event possible. ¢
