The hotel shut down in May, and negotiations then began on a new lease. The pub is owned by David and Joan Goode, who bought and managed the business from 1971 to 1978, before leasing it out. The renovation project now underway is being led by their daughter, Pam, who grew up locally and went to school at Paparoa Primary and Otamatea College. She is working with an hotel consultant and new lessees are standing by to take up the management reins. “It will be a family friendly hotel, with bistro services in the lounge bar as well as a more formal dining room. We will offer not just cold beer, but great coffee and meals too,” said Joan. “That includes all the great local produce Kaipara has to offer. The hotel accommodation is also

The Churcher’s have been propagating natives for several years for local Clean Stream Accord riparian projects, and wanted to support the Hartles’ plans for their farm. “Way back up the rivers is where we really need to get the trees in,” says David. And we will have a new dining room seating 20 which will also be available for functions.” In other refurbishment, the enclosed beer garden to the side of the pub has been opened up, and will feature a garden setting for outdoor entertainment. With a facelift for the accommodation section well underway, painters are next on the list for internal and external freshening up. “It will bring a new lease of life to the surrounding community, and our plans include close co-operation and promotion with other hospitality businesses in the area. Paparoa is very much a gateway to Kaipara, and it’s our intention that the re-newed pub will be a big part of that,” Joan added.

Documenting a century of fire fighting

 by Rose Rees-Owen

Former firefighter, Noel Moran, is delving into the history of the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade and compiling a book for their centennial in September.

 Noel Moran reading a minute book for the Dargaville Fire Brigade centenary book

Noel is a life member of the brigade and served for 33 years joining in the early 70s and says the book is a labour of love. “There wasn’t much information at the 75th Jubilee, just a broad overview. I felt it was important to cover the history of the brigade for the centennial.” He covers from when the brigade formed on August 8, 1913, right up to present day with each decade a chapter. He also pays tribute to prominent members including the Murdoch brothers, Bruce, Gary, Rex and Ross who between them have served for more than 140 years.

“I got bits and pieces from all sorts of places,” says Noel. He has been sifting through minute books, roll books as well as sourcing information from the Dargaville Museum, the library as well as journalist, Brian Eastwood and historian, Noel Hilliam. Owning Moran’s Bookshop has also been helpful with locals coming in to share their tales. Once he’s completed the A4 sized soft copy book it will be sold during the celebrations. Noel encourages anyone with information or photos regarding the fire brigade to share it with him and visit him at Moran’s Bookshop.

That’s why there’s a lot of Christmas nostalgia in the air around the colder months, as all the trimmings of a European yule become suddenly relevant. We certainly get the cold during June, which is when the actual middle of winter falls, even if we don’t get the presents. Well, we here at the Kaipara Lifestyler are aiming to change all of that with a little Midwinter Christmas gift of our own. We’ve gotten together with a festive bunch of local retailers to bring you a great new solstice tradition… our Midwinter Christmas shop and win giveaway, starting today, June 11. All you have to do is pick up a gift for yourself by shopping at one of the stores listed on these pages. Putting the spark in Kaipara engines  by Andy Bryenton

It’s not just pistons and petrol which keep your engine pumping — vehicles both modern and classic rely on well maintained electrical systems to function at peak efficiency, especially at this cold time of year. As well as providing the ‘pulse’ of your engine, electrical systems play a huge part in other ways as well; powering alarms for security, stereo systems for entertainment, and GPS for navigation to name just a few. Here in Dargaville the trusted name in auto electrical for over a decade has been VOS, situated right in the centre of town in what is fast becoming a hub for all things automotive. New next door neighbours Kaipara Motorcycles have brought a new range of off road machines to the corner of Normanby Street, but under the VOS and Battery Town signs in the same complex you’ll find that it’s business as usual, as qualified auto electrical technician Denis Little takes care of vehicles big and small. The range of vehicles he services is testament to his skill and experience —

everything from motorcycles to tractors, trucks to boats, caravans to ATV’s — and the range of jobs he undertakes for his very satisfied customers is just as varied. Need a new stereo installed, or DVD players fitted to keep the kids happy on those long trips? No problem! How about an alarm system for peace of mind, or even a GPS tracking unit to deter thieves and promote safety? All sorted. And when it comes to the technical job of re-wiring, upgrading and restoring vehicles, Denis and the VOS team have you covered. With winter here, and the cold taking a toll on starters, alternators and other vital parts, it makes sense to have your vehicle checked. Begin with a battery check, or give VOS a call to make use of their mobile service on your farm — a little forward planning now will save frustrating breakdowns this winter.

New generation delivers a fresh approach Toyota’s RAV4 has proven a hit across all three of its previous generations — a vehicle which fits into the perfect ‘goldilocks’ size and shape for many Kiwi families. The original 1994 iteration of the neat little 4x4 was a departure from what was seen as the norm at the time, of the SUV as a huge, heavy mud-slinging and serious tool. RAV4 won over fans with its unique styling, keeping them with a combination of traditional Toyota reliability and a definite fun factor. Successive generations of the RAV4 have grown bigger as drivers demand more internal space, greater safety and more in-car technology — indeed, the RAV4 may have begun the battle for the ‘small, fun sports utility’ niche back in the 90’s, but there has been no resting on the proverbial laurels over at Toyota HQ. The fourth generation RAV4 has grown up, but it still has a sense of fun, and the feeling that with this machine one could take anyone and anything almost anywhere. The RAV4 range for 2013 allows customers to decide from the very start exactly what they want from their new Toyota. All share the same new styling — smooth and uncomplicated by excessive visual noise, with a commandingly high driving position and a dominant stance, thanks to bold alloys, a swept-back roofline and a front grille treatment bringing the RAV4 in line with Toyota’s new design aesthetic. Gone is the 3rd gen spare wheel shell across the tailgate, which now opens with an actuated assist. At the top of the range sits a seriously capable 2.2 turbo-diesel with all the modern conveniences you would expect in a more pricey machine, plus a couple of new innovations (like a very smart blind spot sensor to make lane changes safer) which are Toyota’s own work. In fact, the flagship Limited RAV4 comes complete

with a suite of tech unmatched for its price — satellite navigation, bluetooth, connectivity for a spectrum of mobile gadgetry, dual zone aircon and heated leather seats to name a few. On the road the Limited felt planted, and surprisingly responsive despite the fact that the new RAV4 looks almost as large as the now-retired Prado. Toyota’s engineers have tried their hardest to keep the fun, essentially zippy character of the original RAV4 alive through the handling profile of their latest offering, and with the optional ‘sport’ mode button that definitely shines through. An optional ‘eco’ mode makes the auto gearbox a touch less aggressive, too, and reduces fuel consumption to a respectable 6.5L per 100kms. It’s a comfortable and capable 4x4, and one which won’t get stuck in any old mud puddle; there’s even that badge of off road competency, too — a proper hill descent assist. Torque delivered by the bucketload means towing will not be an issue, either. At the other end of the spectrum sits the 2-wheel-drive, 2 litre petrol GX model; the least expensive of the new RAV4 family. While some would cry heresy at the fact that a RAV4 with front wheel drive was even considered, consider this — many SUV owners are not out there to conquer the Paris to Dakar. Some want the roomy practicality of a 4X4 without, as it were, the 4. In the suburbs, the ‘crossover’ has replaced the station wagon in a big way, and Toyota know their market. The 2 wheel drive RAV is a hot seller, and it achieves its very affordable price tag by paring away many of the electronic

gadgets seen on the Limited, without compromising on looks. The 2 litre engine is mated to a seven stage CVT box, providing respectable pick up and go, though after driving the turbo diesel the lower torque output is noticeable.

That being said, the petrol power plant punches above its weight, with 7.4L per 100km fuel efficiency and ample power to move the now fairly imposing fourth generation RAV4 through busy traffic without a fuss.

 by Andy Bryenton

The Dargaville Club is famously inclusive — in fact, you’ll find that most locals have shared a game of pool or a pint or two within its walls over the years. a good time. Club management want to showcase the facilities and benefits of their venue to new faces in the area, and to welcome one and all for an ‘open day’ — a day when patrons don’t have to be a member or the guest of a member to take part. With yearly membership dues some of the lowest among comparable organisations, the Dargaville Club offers a unique atmosphere for a very reasonable price indeed. Those who attend the open day (from 3pm on Saturday the 15th of June) may very well be tempted to make the Club their regular meeting place, and existing members and management promise to give all comers a warm welcome with this in mind. ■

Membership still brings its privileges, though, and in an effort to boost membership numbers this long-standing Kaipara institution is holding an open day on the 15th of June. There could be no better time to show off the convivial atmosphere and civilised accoutrements of the Club to potential members — the 15th is a Saturday, in the heart of rugby season, and it’s a night when the All Blacks take on France in a decisive test match. Many locals will remember the excellent coverage the venue gave for New Zealand’s victorious rugby world cup campaign, and it’s all set to be another excellent night of sports entertainment, with a big screen broadcasting the action live. There’s even a van service available to ferry folks to and from the Club on the day. Add to this a full menu from the kitchen, drinks specials, and free pool and snooker as a ‘warm up’ to the big game, and you can be assured of

Memories, nostalgia and performing were all part of Dargaville Little Theatre’s 50th Jubilee celebrations over Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

Reggae band Selective Soundz as well as other Kaipara bands will play at the Otamatea High School for Matariki. Other performances include kapa haka and acapella as well as guest speakers. Arts, crafts and kai will be for sale. The concert is called Whanau in Education and organiser, Thomaseena Paul says Matariki is the perfect time to start anew. “We are trying to entice whanau to have a more active role in their children's education.” Festivities begin at 6pm, June 13. Entry by gold coin koha.

The sections are symbolic of traditional Matariki celebrations titled — unitary, tribute to ancestors, eyes of the god,

Around 90 members came from all over New Zealand and further afield to reminisce and reignite friendships including founding member Harold Sherson who performed in the first play produced, The Happiest Days of  The Pantomime section from the jubilee Your Lives in 1963. show, This is the Life Celebrations included two performances of an original show, This is the Life, written and directed by committee member, Deborah Steele, which highlighted past shows and incorporated the theatre’s history. Dinner at the Dargaville Town Hall concluded the celebrations and the current president Keith Allen and past president Harold Sherson cut the cake. Chair of the Jubilee subcommittee, Eryn Wilson-Collins, says the weekend was a success. “All the committee’s hard work was worth it when we saw people catching up and exchanging stories.” She adds a touching moment was hearing the audience sing along with the musical numbers of the show. Now with the celebrations wrapped up, the theatre looks towards their next production, Annie Get Your Gun, directed by Keith Allen. It will be the second time the musical is performed at the Little Theatre first produced in 1973. Auditions at Dargaville Little Theatre June 23, 4pm. Contact Keith Allen 09 439 4605.

Northern Wairoa A&P Association ARAPOHUE SHOW The Northern Wairoa A & P Association is holding a general interest public meeting on Monday 24th June 2013 in the Arapohue Hall at 7:00pm. The purpose of this meeting is to get some direction of the show over the ensuing years. • The Arapohue Show has been in existence since 1892. • To keep this event going into the future, we need new younger enthusiastic members and/ or younger helpers to help with the running of the show. The average age of the committee is mid-60’s at present and our eldest member is in his eighties. • The Arapohue Show is a great family event. • This year the equestrian side of the show increased two-fold thanks to two very enthusiastic younger equestrian people and this is what we need throughout the whole show. • We need some input from the community so that we can improve what we have at the moment into something that is really enjoyed by everyone, of all ages. So what we would like is for members of the community to come to our public meeting and discuss the direction that the show should be taking. Please do not let this event disappear. It is a lot of work for a one day show but we all enjoy putting the event together for others to enjoy as well. Contacts – Brian Hutchings 09 439 4998 or Nicky Poyner 09 439 5595
