Marae takes on poultry producer

For services to conservation

u by Ayla Miller

Mangawhai man Dr Gordon Hosking is on the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his significant efforts to protect pohutukawa, rata and other conservation projects.

p The Dargaville Chicken Farm Community Information group and supporters held a peaceful protest outside the consultation hui organised by Tegel in Auckland last week

“Tegel has responded by calling hui of Kapehu Marae in Auckland without the knowledge or the permission of the marae,” she said. “Both our marae and urupa — cemetery — are on the boundary of the property Tegel intends to purchase for this development. “The closest of the 32 sheds, each housing more than 40,000 broiler chickens, is less than 350 metres from the urupa. “The proposal requires extensive quarrying which will take place in the paddock next to the wharenui — meeting house — on the marae. “Once the development is completed, 40 tonnes a day of litter, excrement and dead birds will be burnt on site and will discharge a constant stream of toxic contaminants through two 16 metre high chimneys towards Kapehu urupa and marae and the surrounding environment. The application shows that the toxins and the odour will be a major

problem for the development especially when sheds are being cleaned at the end of each six week cycle. Dust, which will also contain toxins, will also be problematic and pollute the marae’s water supply.” A further request for information was sent to Tegel by the NRC, dated May 29, asking for clarification on who Tegel is liaising with from the marae, along with other information provided in the consent application. Dargaville Chicken Farm Community Information group member, Rosie Donovan, said the group will always be there to support the marae. “One nice thing that has come out of this is that it has almost strengthened our community.” Full public hearings on Tegel’s application will be held from August 8 at the Lighthouse Function Centre in Dargaville with three commissioners to be confirmed by Kaipara District Council at a meeting on June 26. ¢

Dr Hosking has been a trustee of Project Crimson for 29 years, and his career has included positions with the Forest Research Institute/ Scion Forest Health Group and the Ministry of Forestry. “I have always worked largely with a team of people who have worked alongside me in conservation, and I was a little surprised to be singled out,” he said. “I’ve been brought up in the outdoors, and I’ve always worked in native forests. Doing work to try to conserve them and improve them is really no hardship for me.” He will attend a ceremony p Dr Gordon Hosking has been recognised in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his services at Government House with his to conservation wife and daughter where the governor general will present him with comes at a perfect time at the end of a 29 year period of service.” the award. Pest plant advice

I remember when…

u by Jill Dickie

u by Jill Dickie

This winter will be the eighth year the Northland Regional Council has held its popular pest plant workshops, one of which specialist Sara Brill will host at the Paparoa Memorial Hall on July 23.

Former pupils of the now-closed Graham’s Fern School met recently for a luncheon at the Dargaville RSA to exchange memories and laughter. Many stories between the 18 past pupils began with ‘I remember when…’

Pest plant experts will pass on tips on how to tackle some of Northland’s worst weeds at free workshops learning how to better manage both land and freshwater-based pest plants, either on their own land or properties they manage for others. “Informative, fun and free, these three-hour workshops might be just the thing you’ve been looking for if you’ve ever wondered which weed is which, why weeds wander and what can be done about it,” said Councillor Joce Yeoman. Sara Brill says the workshops are hands-on and delivered in a relaxed and fun way to help people learn how best to tackle p Participants at last year’s workshop identifying pest plants a wide variety of more than 20 pest plants.“ the warm spring growth phase starts. The idea for the reunion came to light at an 80th birthday party when friends who had lived at Hoanga and attended the school began talking about old times, and asking ‘I wonder where they are now?’. When contacted they were enthusiastic to get together again, and 18 of the 28 past pupils travelled from around the North Island, plus one from Brisbane, bringing their partners to attend.

“The event went very well, and everyone enjoyed their time together,” said reunion organiser, Margaret Tier. A 1965 photo of the school was printed onto a coffee mug and presented to the 43 people who gathered for the reunion. The school was built above the mill town of Hoanga in 1901 and served the area for more than 50 years, closing in 1953. ¢

Congratulations for canines Harbour watchdog endorses plastics ban u by Ayla Miller

Two Kaipara-based canines have shown that anything is ‘pawsible’ with a little hard work, returning from the New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Championships in Blenheim amongst the top five sheepdogs in the country.

Wellsford dairy farmer Scott McRae’s three-year-old dog Cory, came fifth overall in the Long Head event with 185.5 points and Scott’s second dog, five-year-old Toby, was third in the Zig Zag Huntaway event with 191.25 points. Scott, who has been involved in sheepdog trials for around 20 years, says Toby’s achievement was even more pleasing as he had suffered a twisted gut during the North Island championships two weeks earlier and spent a week at the vets. “I was over the moon about it,” Scott said. “To get two dogs into the runoffs is quite a major achievement. It doesn’t happen to many people.” The Northland Centre club also took home the C P Perry p Sheepdog triallist Scott McRae with Toby (left) and Cory M B E Memorial Shield for 2018 (right) for the first time in the 50-plus years the shield has been around. through to the runoff for the New Scott says being a dairy farmer means Zealand championships. his dogs do not get as much chance This is the first time Toby and Cory to work sheep; however, they put in a have qualified for this competition. The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group — IKHMG — has given a ringing endorsement to growing action against plastics pollution, with bans on supermarket singleuse plastic bags, and corporates signing up to the New Zealand Plastic Packaging Declaration. To mark World Environment Day on June 5, associate environment minister, Eugenie Sage, announced local and multinationals had vowed to eliminate non-recyclable plastics by 2025. In another milestone, a government regulation to ban the sale and manufacture of plastic microbeads in New Zealand came into effect from June 7. “We absolutely endorse the government moves with plastics a huge threat to the Kaipara Harbour and also to the tributaries from our catchment area of 647,000 hectares,” says IKHMG’s programme manager, William Wright. “It affects fish and bird life. The Kaipara is the source of 97 percent of west coast snapper stocks.” Microbeads are considered a menace to aquatic and marine environments as they can pass through filter systems. They are too

small to retrieve or recycle, do not biodegrade, and consumed by marine life, cause long-term damage. It is estimated about 10,000 tonnes of plastic microbeads are used globally each year, usually for exfoliation or polishing purposes. About 100 personal care products in New Zealand contain the tiny plastic beads. The new ban is intended to eliminate two types of microbeadcontaining products — wash-off cosmetics such as facial and body exfoliants, toothpaste and heavy-duty hand cleansers and abrasive cleaning products, including household, car or industrial cleaning products. Before the ban was approved by cabinet, a total of 16,223 submissions were received. All the submissions either supported the proposed ban or supported it in part. None were opposed.

PUBLIC NOTICE Road Works for the District – June 2018 Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during June include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and systematic grading of the network. Area specific works planned during June include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the District • Unsealed/Sealed pothole repairs throughout the District • Maintenance grading throughout the District • Roadside vegetation spraying — Dargaville, Pouto, Tangowahine, Baylys Beach and Kaihu • Kerb and channel, and footpath spraying — Paparoa, Pahi, Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka and Mangawhai • Water table restoration — Bradleys Landing East, Tain, Mountain, Mapuna, Petley, Hoyle, Trounson Park, Girls High School, Omana and Doctors Hill Roads • Dangerous Tree Removal: Moir Point and Lawrence Roads • Mechanised Tree Pruning — Insley Street, Ararua, Cove, Kaiwaka Mangawhai, Mangawhai, Tomarata and Mangawhai Heads West Roads • Culvert Replacement — Griffin, Golden Stairs, Mititai, Oneriri, Bickerstaffe and Tain Roads We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of June if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue. The Sport Northland Run/Walk Series 2018 continued last weekend with the Dargaville 10.5km and 5km run/walk event, sponsored by Dargaville Veterinary Centre Ltd. A chilly 8.30am start greeted the 580 participants, starting and finishing in Victoria Street with the route taking in the Northern Wairoa bridge and river scenes. The 10.5km runners also passed up and around the Dargaville Museum. All ages took part, toddlers in pushchairs, children, young adults through to the more mature, and even some dogs! Some were dressed well for the event in jackets and hats; some in matching team t-shirts; and others celebrating the fun atmosphere by dressing in costume. Harry Linford of Whangarei led throughout the 10.5km run ahead of Louis Young from Wellsford and

Hannah Ewinson of Dargaville won the women’s division with Helen Jager and Gabrielle Thompson both from Whangarei taking out third place. “The event went really well and we are very happy with how well the volunteers from the Lions, and the rugby and netballs clubs helped us,” said events coordinator Tara Wilson. ¢

A safe space to honour your loved one 60

You have been able to find your local funeral director at 15 Gladstone Street for many, many years. Over the last 12 months, you would have noticed the building housing Harts Funerals being demolished and a new building starting to take shape in its place. On the 1st of June 2018 an official opening of the new upgraded funeral home had it’s opening under its new name. We were lucky enough to have our local member of parliament Matt King with us to declare the building open. Mr King was very excited and enthusiastic about investment in the community. Our mayor Dr Jason Smith was also attendance for this historic occasion. Morris & Morris has been part of the Northland community for over 60 years and it was important to us to provide a space for the people of the Kaipara District which allowed families to spend time with their loved one, in a comfortable, safe environment. Morris & Morris purchased Hart Funerals in 2013 and it was decided that the new building opening was the best time to officially change the name to Morris & Morris. We wanted the new building to represent the quality of service families are entitled to except when they require the services of their local funeral home. Our funeral home is your funeral home, we live locally, we are your neighbours and friends. It’s important to us that you feel truly looked after, when you visit us. In the spirit of our transparent community relationship we invite you to please stop by for a cup of coffee or a tea and come see our new home.

New chapter for funeral home Chasing dreams with ‘Gracelands’

Dargaville has a brand-new funeral home on the same site as the original facility, which was established in 1921.

u by Ayla Miller

A fundraising concert with an extensive lineup of local talent will help 11-year-old Dargaville gymnast Grace Christey represent New Zealand in Arizona next month.

p Northland MP Matt King, Kaipara mayor Jason Smith, Morris and Morris general manager Gary Taylor and funeral director Claudia Guthrie-Oehlinger outside the Morris and Morris funeral home

Morris and Morris Funerals purchased the business of Hart Funerals in 2013, and as part of the changes, the name Hart Funerals is retiring after 21 years of service. General manager for Morris and Morris, Gary Taylor, felt it was important for the company to be on the same site as past funeral directors and says the same level of service will remain. “As part of our commitment to the community, we felt it was important, that we provide a facility that was first-class and complemented

our professional, caring service. “We can assure you our standards haven’t changed, and you can expect honest, genuine care when we assist you to create a meaningful farewell for your loved one.” Northland MP, Matt King, opened the facility, saying it was a ‘privilege’. “I get involved in both ends of the spectrum by opening early childhood centres and funeral homes. It’s great to see people investing in local businesses, and this is a really good thing for Dargaville.” ¢

Salute to the community builders u by Andy Bryenton

As an early evening draws the curtain on a chilly winter’s day, most of us are concerned about getting home into the warm and dry — and what’s on the stove for dinner. But on any given weekday and well into the weekend, people all across the region — from Mangawhai in the East to Baylys Beach in the West — are simply going home to get changed, grab a bite to eat and head out to events which make our towns into communities. Those parents taking their kids to a sports practice under lights, with a thermos of soup in the back of the car. The people meeting for church, club and civic committees who know that the old town hall takes time to warm up, and have brought a woolly hat and fingerless gloves along with their pen and paper. The organisers of sausage sizzles, interclub matches and market days on cold weekends, because no matter the season, roofs need fixing, paint needs applying, funds need raising, and games must go on, no matter if it’s a misty or frosty start out on the court or the pitch, or between the goalposts. So often — in fact, too often — it’s the same folks who pick up the reins on multiple boards and committees. Some have done it for life. Some got involved when it was their kids who were out there on a Saturday morning in tiny rugby boots, and who are now a part of the

clubroom furniture. Others pour a level of creativity and — there’s no other word — genius into music groups, amateur theatrical troupes and performing arts events that Hollywood and the music industry simply can’t answer back. We all know someone like that, for whom the ‘little bit extra’ is never too much, and who gives their best shot at what is usually an unpaid job after a full week of 9 to 5. Next time you see them, say thanks. Or, better yet, get involved yourself. Because when anyone asks one of the many new arrivals to the Kaipara what they like best about our part of the world, the answer — even before the mild winters — is a sense of community. That’s something which inevitably fades away in a big city where nobody knows their neighbour and everyone is competing with everyone else. But it’s built in our smaller, more

The Riverview Resthome and Village was established over twenty years ago by the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust Inc (MCCT) to serve the Maungaturoto District. Originally set up as a sixteen-bed Maungaturoto Rest Home, the complex has evolved alongside a residential area adjacent to the rest home which offers thirteen rental units. Fourteen ‘own your own’ units have been added over time. A medical centre, operated by Coast to Coast Health, provides convenient onsite care for all residents.

Oi!

Paparoa is a great little village to visit on the weekend with Kauri Settlers Museum, Saturday farmer’s market and a great bush walk behind the historic hotel. With winter here, a quick weekend getaway that culminates in a delicious meal is just the ticket — so it’s no surprise that this beautifully restored classic Kiwi tavern is a hot spot in the cold weather. The Thirsty Tui Paparoa Hotel turns two years old this winter — a new chapter unfolding for a very special place in locals’ hearts and memories. With a massive refurbishment inside and out adding to the art deco era charm of Paparoa’s ‘oasis’, the long established pub has come of age for a new generation. Recently the Thirsty Tui has also been very proud to be included in ‘New Zealand Pubs: 175 Classic Pubs to Visit’ a new guide book of hotels and gastro pubs throughout the country. Part of this is the timber and stone which make up the historic tavern — but so much more is about the people who make it special. Both the local characters you’ll find in the taproom and restaurant, and the team who have turned a vintage into a classic. Hard work in the kitchen by a dedicated culinary team has seen a new menu surface for the winter months, including a mid-winter Christmas special menu with its own special ‘upside down yuletide’ event — proper Christmas in June on the 20th and 21st. The team are ironing out the finer details, but we can let you know they will be having duck on the menu along with a whole board

of festive fare. Wintertime is a popular season to stop by for lunch — it’s warm inside, and there’s a selection of homemade pies, piping hot soups and freshly cut sandwiches on offer for the traveller on our pretty state highway 12. For winter lunches on Thursdays and Fridays from 11 to 1 you can enjoy a meal with a glass of house wine or a handle of beer for just $16. Everything made fresh to order — an old fashioned way of doing things, but one which you’ll agree adds to the flavour. The same is true for the Thirsty Tui’s weekend brunch —

a perfect complement to a bit of a weekend sleep-in. From 11 to 12 on Saturdays and Sundays meals such as eggs benedict, southern-style pulled pork with fried eggs or breakfast ham and eggs with lashings of barbecue sauce are all half price. For those planning a weekend break in the country, there’s also cozy accommodation with a very special two-for-one deal. Give the friendly staff a call and arrange a relaxing mini holiday with one of the Kaipara’s most iconic little taverns — and their ever-surprising menu!

Roaring from the track to the road

Pay attention!

u by Andy Bryenton

The roar of the big V8s has always been a bit of a siren song for Kiwi fans and drivers — a call to take on the Aussies on the hallowed tarmac of Mount Panorama and beyond and show some national pride. Now big Supercar supporters TKR are bringing back some of the icons from local motorsport, and putting them to work to raise money for up and coming competitors. TKR’s fire-breathing racer debuted at Bathurst in 2000 with Kiwis Jason Richards and Angus Fogg behind the wheel of the All Black machine. Rebuilding such a complex and powerful car was a labour of love for the team behind the tools, so following on from a successful restoration they set to fixing up some of its stablemates. TKR have been busy recently rebuilding both the TKR/Shane van Gisbergen V8 Supercar, the TKR/ Radisch V8 Supercar and the TKR/ Baird V8 Supercars ready for a massive 80 day national tour throughout New Zealand. Those are some heavyweight names in the world of big horsepower, and their track-devouring weapons of choice look good as new as they set out on the road. From the 23rd April 2018 and ending 28TH June 2018 the team have visited a long list of towns, with the TKR V8 Supercars on display alongside two professional racing simulators for

guests to try out their Bathurst Mount Panorama skills. Tear up the track and you could have the opportunity to win a trip to Bathurst for real! All funds raised from the tour go directly to support Kiwi drivers, keen to make the step from domestic to international competition. There are many elements that it takes to achieve this both on and off the track — physical and mental discipline, quick reflexes and more. TKR has provided key

AUTO

Conferring classic status u by Andy Bryenton

Long ago — well, not so long, but definitely in an era when there were still such things as milk tokens and walkmans — I got some advice about buying a first car. “Forget the big, loud, Chrysler Valiant Regal which the bloke up the road was selling for five hundred bucks. And don’t put in a bid for your mate’s big brother’s crusty old Falcon panel van. Gas guzzlers the lot of them, and little Japanese cars are the way of the future.” The old man had just bought a Toyota, and he was impressed. But I was unimpressed when, years later, I idly clicked through Trade Me to see the exact same Valiant regal 770 listed for over ten thousand dollars as a rusteaten shell. That old panel van? Seems that was a classic too — it’s just that we hadn’t seen it coming. Come to think of it, that old Corolla which had Dad so impressed is now a collectible too. So the big question is — how can you pick them? How can you spend small change now on a machine that’s likely to become an icon in the future? It seems the first ingredient is rarity. Special editions and discontinued badges, strange design quirks — especially those which were seen as weird and odd in their day — these are the signs of a possible future classic. An example — with the Ford Falcon badge now sadly extinct, a 2011 All Blacks special edition Falcon is likely to be a rarity in years to come. But for real quirky appeal, try to snap up the tiny, massively powerful — actually designed by our nation’s rugby

team and Mountune — All Blacks Ford Fiesta. Another signifier is prestige combined with time. About twenty five years is the lowest ebb of depreciation on a car, so right now there are some golden era Japanese classics going cheap. We are in a unique position to import from the land of the rising sun, thanks to our auto laws and proximity.

You might be thinking — ‘Wait? Japanese classics? All real classic cars are either European or American!’ But you’d be corrected by the massive owners groups who obsess over brands like Toyota and Honda. The Toyota classics group even get out for a track day meet once a year, with the likes of MR2s, Celica Gt4s, Supras, Crowns, Centuries and AE86s on display. These guys know their stuff just as well as the hot rod crowd, and that last model — the AE86 — once

cost peanuts but now fetches prices in the mid to late 10,000s. The reality is, a classic is that car you pined for as a kid. It might be that one you owned for a brief time before rust and practicality combined to steal it away. It might be a legend you’ve seen on the screen, or a neighbour’s ride from down the road. Those old Valiants and Holdens are classics because of what they meant to people. So buy what you love. Resale value doesn’t matter when you want to keep a car forever. ¢
