 The inaugural Ladies’ Night at Foster’s Home Decorating drew the crowds to Dargaville last Thursday evening, with the promise of a night of decor, design, nibbles and drinks proving a real drawcard for the long-established homeware retailer. A full complement of 150 tickets pre-booked meant that the Foster’s store was filled to capacity, with entertainment spilling out into the adjoining atrium. A great night was had by all, with bargains to peruse, new style ideas, and great prizes given away. Aaron Foster spoke for his team when he expressed delight at the record turn-out, and has promised another Ladies’ Night next year, even bigger and better.

Council dismisses criticism over rates letter  by Colin Patterson

A letter from Kaipara District Council urging striking Mangawhai ratepayers to pay up or face the consequences has been labelled as inflammatory by some residents.

Kaiwaka’s Got Talent Some very promising future entertainers were revealed in this year’s Kaiwaka’s Got Talent …

According to a Facebook posting by the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association, the letter signed by council finance manager Paul Blackwell says, “‘the court action to challenge the rates is now over and that the court has confirmed that the rates are due and payable’.”

“That is not true and KDC’s commissioners know that,” association chairman Bruce Rogan says Justice Heath has not sealed his judgment and has asked lawyers for the two sides to make submissions. Mr Rogan says until those submissions are made and Justice Heath has a chance to consider

them, the judgement is not final and may be changed. But Mr Robertson says Mr Rogan is wrong. “The advice we have is that the judgement will not be changed. The scope to make alterations is very limited.” continued on page 6 …

Chef

When the high pressure life of a celebrity chef becomes too much to take, it’s time to ditch the kitchen and rekindle the creative fires for top culinary genius Carl Casper. With his family and friends pitching in, can the superstar regain his spark - not in a swanky restaurant, but from the back of a humble food truck in Miami?

Godzilla

The legendary King of Monsters returns to wreak havoc again, following up a career of demolition which has spanned decades and continents. This is where films like ‘Pacific Rim’ got their inspiration, and it’s hard not to cheer as the huge saurian menace wades into battle against humanity once more!

A Million Ways to Die in the West ‘Family Guy’ creator Seth McFarlane returns to the big screen after the riotous success of ‘Ted’ - this time as a cowardly wild west shepherd who must muster up his courage and become a gunslinger. Expect raw and offbeat comedy as McFarlane brings his irreverent cartoon sensibilities to the Western genre.

 Jackson (10) and Bethany Godfrey (7) of Dargaville found out about life behind bars in the Dargaville police station’s holding cells on Saturday. Visitors to the Dargaville station as part of the New Zealand Police’s Open Day were able to inspect a patrol car, see rod spikes up close, greet a police dog and get close to flashing lights. Officers were on hand to explain their work and show off their equipment, including batons and an (unloaded) shotgun. Dargaville was the only Kaipara station taking part in the open day.

Matariki but no kites

Maleficent Angelina Jolie plays the wicked sorceress-queen in this dark retelling of 1959’s animated epic ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Enter the heart of darkness and discover what turned the heart of this beguiling villainess to stone - sealing the fate of a kingdom and forever changing the life of one young princess.

Grace of Monaco From a fairytale of the imagination to one in real life - the glittering saga of Grace Kelly, the movie star who became a real princess when she married the ruler of the tiny, opulent principality of Monaco, home of the Grand Prix racing circuit. Set in the 1960s, this dramatic story features a wealth of style and glamour

 Despite a lack of wind that forced the cancellation of kite flying, Dargaville Museum’s Matariki celebrations at Harding Park on Saturday were a success. Raewyn Sills from the museum says four schools from the district contributed art work, while senior students from Selwyn Park School produced some stunning masks. There were a number of sponsored prizes on offer, with the bilingual class from Te Kopuru winning a trip on the Daisy. She says it is the second year the event has been run. Everyone had fun, with the museum running a sausage sizzle and selling hot chips.

To celebrate National Volunteers Week, Sport Northland has recognised the considerable and invaluable contribution that local volunteer, Jamie Manson, has made within his community.

 Roxanne Kelly presents Jamie Manson with a jacket, certificate and backpack, in recognition of his significant role as a sports volunteer

“He’s one of those parents who not only has a love of sport for himself but he is also selflessly devoted to supporting his wife, children and their friends in their chosen sports,” says Sport Northland’s Roxanne Kelly. Jamie is coach of Southern’s U13 rugby team and considers himself number one supporter of Southern’s senior team. Every Saturday, he is on the sideline at the netball courts supporting his wife Paula’s Kaihu team and daughter Brodie’s Year 8 team and for fun, he plays indoor netball for Kaihu. During the summer months, Jamie is involved with the local touch competition, coaching and mentoring Impact — a team of 16 and 17 year olds. He believes that sport can have a significant and positive influence on the lives of young players.

Also a keen basketballer, Jamie would like to see a revival of the sport in Dargaville and is currently trying to form a club that will encourage younger players. He plays for Maunu Lights in Whangarei’s Super Six Basketball league. Jamie credits his work place, Silver Fern Farms, for supporting his volunteer efforts in the community. He feels that this is a huge boost to him — knowing that his workplace supports his passion. National Volunteer Week is coordinated annually by Volunteering New Zealand. VNZ uses traditional whakatauki for their campaign themes and this year the theme is Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te tangata — With your contribution and my contribution the people will live. 

Te Kopuru residents Quiz to help St John query council priorities provide better training  by Colin Patterson

 by Colin Patterson

Kaipara District Council commissioners who came to Te Kopuru last week are still not listening to residents, a local community leader says. The commissioners were at a meeting at the Southern Rugby Club last Monday that attracted 40 residents. Te Kopuru Centennial Hall Committee chairman Kelvin Windsor says the council asked people what they liked about Te Kopuru. Most replied the community, the quiet environment and the fact that people get on with one another. Then when asked what needs doing, the most frequent answers were drainage, rates, stormwater and dog control. However, Mr Windsor says residents would have given the same answers 12 months ago. “We’ve paid our money and nothing gets done.” He says residents pointed out stormwater problems to the council a year ago, along with their concerns that open drains are a hazard, especially for small children. But there has been no action. Mr Windsor says the council has also failed to address residents’ concerns about a rates hike it wants to pay for urgent work on the town’s sewerage scheme. “They’re collected rates charged to pay to maintain the system. But nothing’s been spent.” While commissioners have agreed to provide rates remissions that will cost $20,000 across the district, they have not changed their proposal to increase rates in Te Kopuru by an average of 8%. Mr Windsor says residents are frustrated they are not being listened to. “We just keep banging our heads against a brick wall. If the council persists with an 8% rates increase, we could be another Mangawhai.” 

A battle of the brains in Dargaville later this month will help St John update some vital training equipment. St John is holding a quiz night on Friday June 27 at the Dargaville Fire Station starting at 7pm. The division has a mannequin which it uses to train volunteers how to respond to emergency callouts. Station manager and chair of St John’s Northern Wairoa area committee Sally Parkinson says they want to buy software for the mannequin to help volunteers interpret electro cardiographs. That is likely to cost $12,000. “We’ve got some funds. But we’ll need to do fundraising for the rest. We won’t do it all from the quiz night. But it’s a start.” Ms Parkinson says there are 21 volunteers in Dargaville and four full time paid staff.  St John paramedic Steve Karl and volunteer Sophia Hodgson with a mannequin at the Dargaville ambulance station Her committee’s aim is to have enough volunteers to ensure that the Dargaville station covers the whole of the Kaipara. “We’ll go station’s two ambulances are double further if we’re the nearest available ambulance.” On average crewed all the time. its professionals respond to an average of four callouts a day At the moment there are enough or 120 a month. volunteers to double-crew 90% of the Because of limited space, bookings for the quiz night are time. “But that’s not enough. Dargaville Lions celebrate

 by Colin Patterson

Despite last week’s wet weather more than 50 people came out to celebrate another successful year for Dargaville Lions. On Wednesday the club celebrated its changeover from one Lions year to another. But while some things changed others remained the same. John Tomlinson is continuing as president and Warren Osbaldiston as secretary. Steve Smith takes over as treasurer, Clive McDermott is the tail twister and Nick Puharich is the almoner. Mr Osbaldiston says Dargaville Lions’ next major project is marshalling the Newman Engineering Baylys Beach to

Dargaville walk on Sunday. The club is also collecting for its fundraising auction. Last year’s auction raised more than $4,000. “We hold the auction as soon as our auction room is full,” says Mr Osbaldiston.”We sometimes hold it twice a year. All the money raised goes into projects.” He says the club may hold its maize maze later in the year depending on the weather, while it will join with the

Beneath the Surface John Robertson QSO

Chair of Commissioners

Rates are Council’s principal source of revenue, bringing in some $27 million of revenue per year from 14,000 property owners. Rates pay for Council services. Roughly half of these rates are used to maintain our roads. We estimate that some $6 million in rates are overdue from property owners who have taken the advice of the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association (MRRA) to withhold them. The MRRA has claimed that the rates are “illegal”. They are not. In the case that the MRRA took against the Council, Justice Heath has ruled that the Kaipara District Council (Validation of Rates and Other Matters) Act validated the rates set “for all purposes”. Hence, the rates are valid and must be paid. There is no question that the Kaipara District Council ‘got it wrong’ when it set a number of its rates between 2006 and 2011 and in the way it went about developing the Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme. The Council has been reprimanded for its indiscretions by the Review Team appointed by the Minister in 2012, the Auditor-General in 2013, Parliamentarians from all sides of the House in 2013, and now Justice Heath in 2014. Kaipara residents have also expressed their annoyance. Commissioners were appointed in 2012 to put things right. That included attempting to bring to account those who caused Kaipara losses. It also included bringing in sound processes to support Council decision-making and being transparent and engaging with communities. All this work is ongoing. Commissioners have appreciated

the support from Kaipara residents as they have gone about their tasks. We have appreciated the support received from the MP for Northland, Ministers of Local Government, and Members of Parliament, and we have appreciated the dedication of Council staff as we have asked them to go the extra mile. Now that the Court has made its rulings, it is time for the litigation to come to an end. We have invited the MRRA to live with the decision of Justice Heath, and not appeal it. The hundreds of thousands of dollars expended on legal fees to date have confirmed the law, but generated no “wins” for any party. It is also time for those withholding rates to pay them. In the Lifestyler last week, the MRRA was quoted as advising their members to continue “their rates strike” for a “little longer” on the grounds that the Association was “hard at work promoting your interests.” This is disappointing. If this advice is taken, penalties will accrue. Bringing rate accounts up to date by the end of this month is important if further penalties are to be avoided. It is equally important that all rates are now paid so that we can invest in what matters — our roads in particular. Commissioners have held back expenditure on roads by millions of dollars to cover the shortfall in rates. Once rate accounts are brought up to date, we will be able to release a backlog of contracts for in excess of $8 million of road works. Let’s now move forward, respect the law and all pay our share for the public services that we use.

Council dismisses criticism over rates letter Mr Robertson says rate payments and penalties are due by June 30, and the council has an obligation to remind ratepayers of that. “We don’t want them incurring any more penalties.” Mr Rogan says the council is being arrogant. “We would have thought that the commissioners would take a conciliatory approach to a community that has been so seriously wronged. Instead, they’ve adopted a highly confrontational bullying approach.

They’ve spat in our faces. They don’t seem to have learned anything.” Although conceding it is unlikely that Justice Heath will change his judgement, Mr Rogan says it is still possible he will do so. As the approach being taken by the court is so unusual, Mr Rogan says it is difficult to predict the final outcome. Mr Robertson says the council is trying to settle the dispute. “Two weeks ago after the judgement I suggested to the MRRA we have a discussion. I told the MRRA we would not appeal the decision and we encouraged them to do likewise and bring the litigation to an end.” Mr Rogan says the association is considering its options. He says it could still appeal the judgement, although it may not decide until the judgement is final. Lawyers for the parties are due to meet with Justice Heath in a teleconference to be held sometime after June 20. However, no date has been confirmed. Mr Rogan says the association intends issuing advice to its members about the rates on or before June 24. 

Speculation on latest Lotto millionaire

7

 by Colin Patterson

Someone who bought a Lotto ticket in Dargaville became an instant millionaire on Saturday night, although the lucky person’s identity remains a mystery. A ticket bought at Countdown Dargaville won the First Division prize in Saturday night’s Lotto draw with the winning numbers 4, 8, 11, 20, 39 and 40 and the bonus number of 9. However, the new millionaire has kept a low profile. A spokeswoman for New Zealand Lotteries said yesterday the prize remained unclaimed and the organisation had no information on the winner. She says it is quite possible that the ticket holder yet to check their ticket and could be oblivious to their success.

Countdown Dargaville manager Snow Toia says neither he nor his staff know the winner’s identity. “All I know is it’s not one of my team.” He says it is the second winning Division One ticket sold while he has managed Countdown Dargaville. 

 Winner of the dance section, Willow Woodman — “a prima ballerina in the making”

Hosted by Kaiwaka School and adjudicated by renowned Kaipara entertainers and tutors, Maura and Peter Flower, the annual event celebrates and showcases its students’ talents. The three 2014 winners were Willow Woodman for dance, Summer Kenyon for the open section and Devaroux Watene Kapea for singing. Willow, “the littlest ballerina”, wowed the audience with a ballet-inspired routine; Summer Kenyon sang a cover of Colbie Caillat’s Bubbly and provided her own guitar accompaniment; and Devaroux Watene Kapea, together with

his father, Joe Miharo Devaroux, sang a beautiful and haunting rendition of Hallelujah in te Reo Maori. Principal Rosemarie Ellis said there can be no winners without contestants and the audience is also an essential component. “So congratulations to all contestants and thank you to all those who supported this event. Thanks also to Mangawhai Beach School who so kindly let us use their sound equipment “Again our Kapahaka group, led by Whaea Mina, did us proud with their opening performance.” 

PUBLIC NOTICE - TREE REGULATIONS Trees close to powerlines can be dangerous. Falling branches can break lines, causing fire and the risk of electrocution. A person who touches a tree which is in contact with a powerline can suffer an electric shock. In high winds trees can damage powerlines and equipment, causing power failures and danger to the public. The Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 (Tree Regulations 2003) were introduced to ensure that trees are kept away from powerlines to protect the security of the electricity supply and for everyone’s safety. The risk of property damage (e.g. from fire) is also reduced. Under the Regulations, trees must be kept clear of powerlines as shown here: The Growth Limit Zone is the minimum space surrounding any powerline that must be kept clear of trees and other vegetation. The size of this zone depends on the voltage of the powerlines. The following table shows the clearances needed for the powerlines that have a span of up to 150 metres.

Long-time friends in starring roles Harry Phillips and Suzanne Lappin-Cripps have been friends for longer than they care to remember! Their friendship is so special that Harry frequently travels halfway round the world to visit Suzanne in Maungaturoto. They met during a Doyle Carte production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, ‘The Gondoliers’ in Great Britain in 1980, and they have been firm friends ever since. Harry’s visits are all the more special because of the opportunity to be involved in the Otamatea Repertory Theatre. This year, Harry is playing the dual role of the Wizard of Oz and Professor Marvel, and Suzanne is to play the Wicked Witch of the West. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is Harry’s 13th show for ORT. Many people will remember Harry as the bustling and pompous Captain Mainwaring in ‘Dads’ Army’, the unlucky Lazar Wolf in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, and the ageing Basil in ‘Dirty Weekends’.

The story, adapted from the book by Frank L Baum, is well-known and loved by many. When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical Land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and en route they meet a Scarecrow, that needs a brain, a Tin Man, missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion, who wants courage. The wizard asks the group to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West, to earn his help. The well-known score includes some of the best loved songs in musical theatre. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ will open for an eight-show season on July 12 at the Maungaturoto theatre. Tickets will be available online at www.ort.org.nz or at Tony’s Lotto Shop in Maungaturoto. 

Aspiring Peter Jacksons of the Kaipara need to put their skates on. The deadline for entries in the Dargaville Cinema Trust’s fifth annual film-making competition is just six weeks away. Over the next few weeks it will be “lights, camera, action” as a new generation of blockbuster movie makers get their thinking caps on and start turning their dreams into cinematic celluloid. Trust secretary Jacoba Puharich says films must be a maximum of seven minutes in length and can be entered in one of four categories — primary, secondary, open and documentary. She

says entrants can enter in more than one category, but each entry must be with a different film. After the entries are judged, the winning films will be shown at a gala premiere at the Anzac Theatre, where the audience will have the chance to vote for their winner. Ms Puharich says a date for the gala premiere has yet to be set. But it is likely to be about a month after the competition closes on July 31. Entry forms are available from the Anzac Theatre or by emailing jacobap@xtra.co.nz. 

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY ANZAC THEATRE DARGAVILLE A celebration of cinematic soul  by Andy Bryenton

Time flies when you’re having fun — and the folks who run Dargaville’s Anzac Theatre have had a ball during the last 12 months, bringing the magic of the cinema back to the town by the Northern Wairoa river. Now, as their first birthday milestone approaches, the Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust are pulling out all the stops with a week of classic Kiwi films, all at the reduced ticket price of five dollars. “We’re utterly rapt with the way Dargaville people have flocked to the theatre, and how they have supported us during our first year,” says theatre manager Vernon Woods. “We’d like to thank a huge list of people, from those who helped us construct the theatre, to our army of volunteers, to the people who fill our seats night after night.” Thanking those who have made the Anzac Theatre not just popular but economically viable in this critical first year is what the week-long birthday celebration is all about. Films like Utu, Boy, and Mount Zion are planned to add a twist of local flavour to what is a very local, Kaipara milestone indeed. Over the last year the team behind the scenes at the Anzac Theatre have proven that with determination, passion and a whole lot of good will pitched in, even a small town like Dargaville can have a world-class cinema — one where patrons have been heard to comment that the seats are ‘too comfortable’ and

the ice creams ‘too generous’. Hardly a source of complaint, then, and a definite source of pride. Vernon reminds patrons that there will be limited spaces available for what promises to be a cracker week of cinema. Bookings are strongly advised to avoid disappointment. 

From an idea to opportunities “With NorthTec running carpentry and painting courses beside the Italian Baker and a horticulture course at the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, a fantastic opportunity exists for students to gain skills and move towards employment,” says Jarrod McKelvie. Jarrod is the painting tutor in Kaiwaka and has been delivering great results since the course started running. Jarrod and his students have been involved in supporting community projects including Maungaturoto RSA, Pukearenga Te Kohanga Reo, Maungaturoto Centennial Hall and St Johns Ambulance Kaiwaka. “It’s amazing to think how much our crews could achieve through the future community projects, if we can keep filling and running these classes.” Tim Magill works alongside Jarrod, and runs NorthTec’s carpentry course — a workshop-based course, where students’ learning is peppered with insights shared from his own professional experience. Tim shares his special tips with the class, from designing home projects to swooping on timber being thrown away. To date the carpentry crew have worked on the Maungaturoto Wharf, Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, Kaiwaka Community Garden and Oruawharo Marae. Both of these courses run 3 days per week over 18 weeks. They are NZQA-approved, fees free and students get to take away a full kit on completion of the course. Tutor, James Andrews completes the line up with a course in sustainable rural development where students can learn about growing food on their own patch. The best way to appreciate the fruits of his labour is to check out the community garden behind the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall planted by NorthTec students. It’s the sort of garden we would all be proud to have planted, and on top of what they learn, students are giving back to the community. “The Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall Committee are so grateful, they are running a movie of our choice for past and present students.” NorthTec is now enrolling for Semester 2 which starts on 21 July. To find out more, and to enrol contact the tutors on: Painting: Jarrod 027 280 0060, Carpentry: Tim 021 487 055, SRD: James 021 0224 1950. 

Employment initiatives and life skills In addition to courses run in conjunction with NorthTec, carpentry tutor Tim Magill and his colleagues also provide a range of educational opportunities from their Kaiwaka ‘work camp’. Because although the three courses taught in partnership with NorthTec are definitely of immense value, there are peripheral skills which Tim and the team also see as of high importance. This means that alongside painting, carpentry, gardening and rural design there are other education opportunities taking flight at the top-of-the-hill Kaiwaka site, embracing everything from carving and beekeeping to driver’s education and more. One popular course, provided generously by representatives of the Mountain Safety Council, taught applicants to safely handle and use firearms. Hunters Graeme Stevenson and Lars Jansen put students through their paces, with local butcher Nick Butterworth rounding off the home kill programme with a tutorial on preparing meat safely on the farm. From a mere idea, the Kaiwaka work camp has become a hub of learning, in all manner of useful skills. Contact them today if you want to expand your horizons! 

Selwyn Park School has always been at the forefront in promoting Education Outside the Classroom, and the year six Hikoi where the children over the course of five days hike the coast from Waikara to the Hokianga Harbour, has become a rite of passage for our senior students. Every year we also strive to have at least one whole school trip. Places visited over the last four years have been the Zoo, The Museum, Kelly Tarltons and the Treaty Grounds, MOTAT and this year we are going back to the Zoo, we were last there in 2008. The school is also part of the Duffy Schools Program and we have regular visits from prominent high achieving Kiwi’s each term. Last year we were visited by ex Black Ferns captain Anna Richards. Selwyn Park is also fortunate in that we are able to host the Northern Wairoa Gifted Kids Programme. This class operates every Tuesday and Wednesday and caters for a number of the gifted and talented students in our area. In conclusion, a quote from the 2012 ERO report states “The school has a strong relationship with the wider community. Students are confident and capable learners. They enjoy positive interactions with each other and their teachers. Students well -being is nurtured through the provision of several initiatives that support their health and well-being. Creativity, innovation, problem solving and reflection are important elements of our programme. Inquiry Learning and self-directed learning are promoted in our school curriculum. We aim to provide stimulating and challenging learning programmes, and studentownership of learning is encouraged through personalised learning goals and self-monitoring. We encourage our students to have a positive “can do” attitude, and a caring attitude toward others and the environment.

Our school was founded in 1958, as such we are the newest of the three larger primary schools in Dargaville. We cater for children from Year 1 to Year 6. We have the advantage of having Selwyn Park Kindergarten right next door so we often work closely with them. We are a family oriented school and the concept of whanau is an important part of our school philosophy. Selwyn Park School is a health promoting school. We have our own school garden which the children as part of their class programmes grow, care for, harvest and consume the produce. As a school that has well-being at its core, daily physical activity is part of the formal school programme, with daily lessons in fitness and skills. Through P.E. we also encourage children to take part in organized sport; 80% of the senior children take part in Saturday or after school sports programmes. Over the last few years we have been very fortunate to have had dedicated Kapa Haka tutors and the group perform regularly at many venues including the Rest homes, civic openings and various festivals. Managing your money in tight times  by Joanne Speechly

A fees free programme designed to give people the necessary tools to meet their financial potential could be held in Dargaville from next month. However, at least 30 students need to sign up for the Certificate in Money Management (CMM) to make it a viable option. The Te Wananga o Aotearoa course, delivered by Multiskill, is a comprehensive course that encourages people to look at their personal finances and future investments. Applicable to all New Zealanders, regardless of age or income, the course covers topics such as attitudes to money, debt management, insurance, family trusts, equities and sharemarkets, retirement planning and Kiwisaver. “It almost sounds too good to be true but I honestly get people coming up to me and saying ‘this course changed my life!’,” says Jodie Hannam, from Multiskill. “One lady said it completely changed the way she looks at money and how she spends it and saves it. She has four children and is now doing the next step up, which is the Certificate in Small Business Management. “Te Wananga get really involved too. They really want their students to succeed and will go that extra mile to help.” The level 3 course consists of four compulsory modules and much of

type!” On the contrary! With faithful human servants like my pet Sharlene to feed and groom me, I have had ample time to learn all about your primitive technology. There are so many cats on your human internet it’s amazing you haven’t worked out that we run the place yet. Why do you think that dangly thing is called a maus, anyhow? In any case, between the torrential downpour which almost flooded our rural idyll this week, the pleasures of proper football on the television (us cats approve of soccer. Though the ball should ideally be substituted for yarn), and the kommandant’s trip down to Fieldays, I have had the whole place largely to myself. Plenty of breathing space, mice to chase, all the leftovers I can purr for — in fact, if it wasn’t for the soggy damp this would be a cat’s paradise right now. I toyed with the idea of jumping up on the back of the big red quad and essaying a mission of reconnaissance, but a drip from the back door sill quite put me off my game.

To tell you the truth, with Billy away it’s been a little too quiet around here. I begin to fondly recall his vile smell, his incessant slobbering, his spelling mistakes — ahh, that must be it! The cold and damp have affected my sensitive brain! Because there could be no way that a proud, aristocratic cat like me would actually (ahem) miss a mutt like Billy, could there? Except, like everyone else here on the farm, I must confess, dear reader, that I do. Ach, well — as you Kiwis say ‘no worries’, eh? He’ll be feeling better soon. Now, to go online and order that case of catnip mice! What was Sharlene’s credit card number again? Yours faithfully etc, Herman the German Editor’s Note: Billy will be back next week. 

‘Grandad, when I grow up how do I become a farmer?’ Grandad pondered for a moment and said: ‘well grandson, it is a bit different from my day. In previous generations, many parents transferred farms to the eldest son. I guess you could either marry a farmer’s daughter, inherit a farm or work your way up the ladder to farm ownership. While farming is the backbone of the country, in today’s world that has become a real problem due to the length of time it takes, and farm profitability can be low due to market fluctuations’. The grandson then asked grandad if at times there is no money in it, why do you farm? ‘Well, my boy, usually people who work the land have a spiritual connection. Our family farm belonged to my grandfather. The spiritual value of the land is more important to me than its monetary value. Farmers of New Zealand is planning to hold a succession plan workshop with Ian Blackman a practicing lawyer passionate about the rural sector. He is well known for his rural expertise in dealing with farm trusts and what is required to ensure a successful farm succession plan. There are also numerous training institutions. Among them is Telford — a Division of Lincoln University. Telford is based six kilometres from Balclutha in South Otago on a 921 hectare commercial farming enterprise. It offers real farming experience for its students. Telford also has over 30 diverse correspondence courses, so no matter where you live in New Zealand, you can enrol. years and the Telford Cup for Enterprise was donated by them. The sentiment behind the Telford Cup for enterprise is based on William Telford’s own enterprising prowess in 1861 — coming to New Zealand from England as many of our ancestors did in the mid 1800s to begin a new and prosperous life. William Telford was born in Cumberland in 1817 and worked his way out to Australia as a ship’s carpenter at the age of 23. He married Mary Borthwick and in 1861 purchased land in South Otago steadily building up his flock of sheep from 1,708 in 1861 to
