p The Dargaville Aero Club has upgraded it’s runway with 400 tonnes of crushed limestone. Harrison Contractors spread the metal over 1000 metres of runway making the runway 70mm thick. Senior flying instructor, Murray Foster, says the runway needs to be upgraded every five years because the limestone turns to powder. He says it’s the only runway north of Auckland where planes can land in all weather conditions, and the venture cost the club around $20,000. The runway will be well utilised as Dargaville is part of a training circuit for Auckland clubs as well as many local flights.

Entrants can choose from either a 12km run beginning at the beach or a 6.8km walk starting from Rick’s Paint Shop on Baylys Coast Road with both events finishing at Memorial Park on June 23. It will be the fourth event in the run/walk series happening around Northland this year and Hayley says it’s about creating options to achieve Sport Northland’s goal of ‘a more active Northland’. “People can choose what suits them — there’s something for the more serious runners or for those interested in walking,” says Hayley. More muscle for the fire brigade  by Rose Rees-Owen

Farmer Barry Shine donated around $3,000 worth of Stihl products from Godfrey’s Chainsaws and Mowers to the Dargaville Fire Brigade.

Farewell for bus driver

 by Rose Rees-Owen

Before sole driver for Main Coachline,Pieter Fakkers, makes his last bus trip to Auckland on June 30 he will attend an afternoon tea put on by community organisations.

p From Left: Station officer, Jason Campbell with farmer, Barry Shine, and owner of Godfrey’s Chainsaws and Mowers, Trevor Gwillim

“It’s a really good organisation run by volunteers,” says Barry. He received the package after purchasing a Toyota Hilux during a Fieldays promotion. “I already had all the gear so I decided to give it to a worthy cause.” Station officer, Jason Campbell, says it’s “generosity to a tee” and adds the donation was “out of the blue.” The package which includes a combisystem engine with a hedge trimmer, line trimmer and blower attachments will be raffled off to go towards rescue equipment. The brigade are fundraising to upgrade a thermal imaging camera which can cost between $15,000 and $20,000. “It isn’t in the NZ Fire Service budget so we have to self fund it.” The camera will allow firefighters to see ‘hot spots’ through smoke, darkness, or heatpermeable barriers.

Other benefits include the ability to pick up body heat enabling the brigade to locate a person in need of rescue. “It will not only benefit the community but surrounding volunteer fire brigades as we all work closely together.” Jason says that with up to 250 callouts a year the equipment is invaluable and adds donations are not the only way to support the brigade. “We are always on the lookout for new recruits — men or women — and you don’t have to give up your life. We always say family comes first, work second and the brigade third.” Jason says it’s hard to pinpoint one thing he gets out of being part of the brigade but adds the satisfaction of helping someone in need is indescribable. The brigade plan to raffle off the Stihl products after their centennial in September.

‘The failings are woeful’ Parliament is now very aware of the issues, and that nothing will be swept under the table.” Mr Sabin added that the council accepts mistakes were made and that it needed parliament’s support to correct the situation. The Bill does not absolve anyone of responsibility for the decisions that led to those errors. “I would not support this legislation if that was the case. Bringing the Bill to parliament gives constituents the opportunity to have their say, and I encourage people to make a submission. The Mangawhai residents and Ratepayers Association chair, Bruce Rogan, says “the association’s position is that there should not be a Bill. “Our position is that the Bill is a breach of democracy and it should not have been introduced while a ratepayers case against the council has yet to come

Held at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club in Harding Park, James encourages everyone to come along at 1.30pm, June 30 and say thank you. “Everyone is welcome — come along and bring a plate — tea will be provided by the machinery club,” says James. ¢

New bed a winner

 Winner Karen Solly with Furniture Zone’s Shane Munn

Karen Solly from Waihue was delighted to win a brand new bed in a nationwide draw, but with her household fully bedded down, had nowhere to put it. “It was a nice surprise, but we’re actually really well off for beds — even in the spare rooms.” The queen-size mattress and base from Furniture Zone will not

go begging, however, as Karen has generously passed it on to Daniel van Leeuwarden, who works for the Solly’s quarrying business. Dargaville Furniture Zone manager, Shane Munn, says there’s another bed up for grabs this month. “People can enter the competition just by coming in the store, no need to purchase anything.”

Tane Mahuta holds his own u by Sheri O’Neill

Waipoua Forest’s esteemed tree is amongst august company in this month’s reissue of Lonely Planet’s authoritative travel guide, 1,000 Ultimate Sights. The publication presents 100 ‘Top Ten’ lists of the world’s manmade marvels and natural wonders, ranking Tane Mahuta among the ‘Most Iconic Trees’, which include the Lebanese Cedars of God, California’s General Sherman sequoia, Sri Maha Bodhi in Sri Lanka and Major Oak in Sherwood Forest. Lonely Planet notes the kauri dieback threat and instructs visitors to clean their shoes before and after their visit. Caused by the fungus-like organism Phytophthora taxon Agathis (PTA), kauri dieback symptoms include yellowing leaves, thinning canopy, dead branches and lesions bleeding resin on the lower trunk. PTA infects the tree through its roots via humans, animals and vehicles, and so far there is no known cure. With a $5M Ministry for Primary Industries research fund ending next year and no guarantee of the further $15M scientists say is required to get on top of the disease, councils in affected areas face finding the cash for continued monitoring, protection and research. Tane Mahuta suffered major root damage by visitor trampling prior to the installation of a protective boardwalk, and Waipoua Forest Trust ecologist, Stephen King, still considers the tree in vulnerable recovery mode. During the recent drought it shed more foliage than was usual during summer, leading to the application of thousands of litres

of water to its roots, hoping to ease any stress. Mr King has said closures might need to be imposed for those tracks that have exposed roots or do not yet have boardwalks installed. Another concern is funding more effective hygiene measures — any chemical fully effective against the disease may be damaging to the trees. “One option is to supply plastic footwear to visitors that can be steam cleaned.” With an estimated 250,000 visitors to Waipoua and its giant trees every year, Shane Lloyd of Copthorne Hokianga says any extensive closure would be disastrous for tourism. “The forests are a major hook and if they’re out of the loop there would be dramatic effects, not just to Kaipara, but all of Northland.” But with only 1% of original kauri forest remaining, he says protection is the priority. “If the trees go, the tourists will anyway.”

Kaipara’s volunteers make good citizens  by Sheri O’Neill

With this week designated Volunteer Awareness Week, nominations are being called for this year’s Kaipara Citizens Awards, to be presented in August. Three awards have been presented each year since 2001, and 36 names, representing a variety of services and countless voluntary hours, feature on honours boards in the foyers of the Kaipara District Council’s offices. “I have been very impressed by the people in the Kaipara community who give of their time to help others, without any thought of reward or even recognition,” says KDC commissioner, Colin Dale. “Meals on wheels, helping the disabled and disadvantaged, fundraising, supporting amateur sports; there are so many ways that I see unassuming volunteers making Kaipara a better place. “These awards are one small way in which we can recognise some and show all volunteers that we really appreciate

their contribution, so please think of someone and put in a nomination.” Nominations will remain confidential and can be made until July 15, with forms available from the council’s Dargaville or Mangawhai offices, by calling 0800 727 059 or at www.kaipara.govt.nz. ¢

OBITUARY

Edith (Johnny) Jones A former Matron of Dargaville Hospital has died in Dargaville aged 98 years. Edith St. Martin Jones, always known locally as Johnny, was daughter of school teacher Janie and Fraser Jones a farmer and fisherman. Johnny was born at their farm under the shadow of Mount Taranaki/Egmont. When she was eight Fraser became ill so Janie took a sole charge position at Pouto School and the family moved north. Johnny remembered, ‘I had to leave that happy lifestyle when I went to Whangarei High School. The best part was going home for the holidays.’ Childhood days roaming around Pouto probably put Johnny on the path of always seeking new adventures, an enthusiasm that lasted all her life. At age sixty-eight she even crewed on the sailing ship Spirit of Adventure. ‘We didn’t need to climb the mast, but of course we did.’ Farming with her father and brother

Murray kept her at Pouto until 1936 when she started nursing training. After a time in Blenheim, Johnny joined the Army as a Nursing Sister. It was 1941 and she was soon aboard a hospital ship bringing wounded troops back from the Middle East. After two trips she was off to New Caledonia to help set up a hospital for soldiers there. With the war over Johnny nursed in Kawakawa before coming back to Dargaville Hospital. Eventually in 1969, she became Matron. Retiring in 1975 to look after her mother, Johnny became very involved

in the Dargaville community. In 1989 Johnny was elected National Council of Women’s Woman of the Year and in 2002 won a Kaipara District Council Citizen’s Award. She was a member of Citizens Advice Bureau, Civilian Maimed Association, a founding member of Dargaville’s Red Cross, life member of an Indoor Bowling Club, played golf, earned an RSA Long Service Award, and became a tireless, committed member of the Anglican Church. She sang in the Church choir, and Kauri Chorus group. Music has always been an important part of Johnny’s life. ‘I strummed my

banjo-ukelele half way around the world, starting sing-songs on ships, trucks and in other places. We could always lift spirits lampooning things that might have otherwise got us down.’ In her memoirs she wrote, ‘I have been honoured to share my memories, as many could have given accounts of much better lives than mine’. Edith Jones has lived a long life of service to others and few people have achieved more than she has done.

Support for the supporters  by Sheri O’Neill

The nationwide annual appeal this month is a time to recognise and support the work of St John. With three ambulance stations supporting the needs of the people of Kaipara, it’s also a good time to see how Kaipara people can assist St John, apart from subscribing or donating. Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka St John are currently

p Dargaville St John volunteer, Genea Evans, makes sure the ambulance is ready to roll

launching a volunteer recruitment drive. “We’ve always had a very strong volunteer base but at the moment we’re doing it tough to provide a local ambulance service,” says station manager, Stephen Rosser. He says that with a steady increase in emergency callouts — over 850 last year — and an increase in personal and family commitments for some volunteers, remaining staff are putting in a lot of hours. “We need additional volunteers if we are to continue providing a 24 hour service. People will always get an ambulance, but if it has to respond from Whangarei, Bream Bay or Dargaville it will take longer.” He says the skills and knowledge acquired volunteering for St John can be helpful in the workplace and the family, in some cases leading to a career, and he encourages anyone interested to contact him to discuss possibilities.

Elaine McCracken, of Dargaville St John, says that people may not realise that there are also things they can do besides becoming a duty officer. “People can make a huge difference to our operations simply by providing support at the station. A long list of vehicle and equipment checks are done by the officers at the beginning of each shift, and assistance with other chores can, unbelievably, make a difference to any ambulance callout. Mopping floors and damp dusting shelves all help our people that are out there saving lives. Time is precious.” Other volunteers are needed for the St John’s Caring Caller and Friends of the Hospital services. “We’re also planning to set up pet visits for the rest homes, so will soon be on the lookout for interested people and their pets,” she says. If any community groups are keen to learn more, she says they have officers available to talk about St John’s role. Contact: Dargaville 09 439 7581 Maungaturoto-Kaiwaka 021 231 6836. ¢

LBPs are designers, carpenters, brick and blocklayers, roofers, external plasterers, site and foundations specialists who have been assessed to be competent to carry out work essential to a residential building's structure or weathertightness. Being licensed means you must maintain your skills and knowledge. A licensed building practitioner (LBP) can be identified by producing their photo ID license card and by checking

Certified Builders

ALL Certified Builders are also Licensed Building Practitioners. But they have also accessed further training and are backed up by a nationwide organisation of professional builders who offer added benefits to the customer. “If you are a Certified Builder it means you are totally committed to quality and craftsmanship,” says the organisation’s website. “To start with all Certified Builders begin their careers by obtaining a professional trade qualification, learning the right way, the first time from a trade qualified craftsman.” The Certified Builders’ Homefirst Builders Guarantee is the only one that includes all of the following features, covering customers for:

Master Builders

ALL Master Builders are also Licensed Building Practitioners. To be a Registered Master Builder, building experience, trade or professional

qualifications and practical management experience are assessed. Workmanship is inspected and previous clients contacted, to ensure the applicant’s work is of a high standard and has satisfied clients’ expectations. In addition applicants must provide evidence of financial responsibility with written references from their bank, accountant and building material suppliers.

Plumbers, Drainlayers and Gas fitters

Plumbers, drainlayers and gas fitters are types of LBP too. It’s very important to be aware that persons carrying out sanitary plumbing, gas fitting and drainlaying work must be authorised by the relevant plumbers, gas fitters and drainlayers board to do so. The message is simple — ask a plumber, gas fitter or drainlayer for their authorisation card and if they can’t produce one, call the Board on 0800 743 262 to check they are authorised. Certain plumbing and drainlaying work may be required to undergo a building inspection, or for the certifier to issue a producer statement for their work.

9

Architects

Also carry LBP accreditation, and are key to ensuring your build gets off to a great start. A qualified architect and designer will often liaise with builders to discuss materials, key aspects of the structure and how it’s all going to come together. Your first port of call when designing a unique home.

E D U C AT I O N Teachers rewarded with apples

Mid-winter fun for Arapohue  by Sheri O’Neill

Arapohue School is the venue this week for a community get together on the shortest day of the year.

p Paparoa primary school student, Blue Pumipi learns mathematics through an Apple iPad, one of five donated by Vaughan and Auriel Jones. “This generous donation is unbelievable and the children of Paparoa Primary School are enjoying using them in their classroom programmes,” says principal Kim Tavinor, “students are learning mathematics, spelling and reading through apps that are both educational and fun to use.”

The winter solstice falls on Friday, June 21, at 5.04pm precisely, but organiser, Yvette Gilchrist of SKIP Kaipara, says the choice of date was coincidental. “But it’s appropriate,” she says, “because the solstice is about new growth and beginnings, and we want to do something positive for the community and promote their wonderful school.” She says all are welcome. “That’s parents, grandparents, friends, carers, past, present and future families.” Principal, Diana Russek, says the p Arapohue School pupils with principal, Diana Russek school roll has been climbing steadily since starting the new year with 11 pupils. The event will run from 10am–1pm with a range “We’re now at 18, with two new enrolments of free and fun activities and a sausage sizzle, with due in the next couple of months.” She says Circus Kumarani interactive sessions putting some the school receives fantastic support from the mid–winter colour in the playground. community and the get together is in support For information call 09 439 7513 or of that relationship. skipkaipara@gmail.com. ¢

Selwyn Park School Our school was founded in 1958, as such we are the newest of the three larger primary schools in Dargaville. We cater for children from Year 1 to Year 6. We have the advantage of having Selwyn Park Kindergarten right next door so we often work closely with them. We are a family oriented school and the concept of whanau is an important part of our school philosophy. Selwyn Park School is a health promoting school. We have our own school garden which the children as part of their class programmes grow, care for, harvest and consume the produce. As a school that has well-being at its core, daily physical activity is part of the formal school programme, with daily lessons in fitness and skills. Through P.E. we also encourage children to take part in organized sport; 80% of the senior children take part in Saturday or after school sports programmes. Over the last few years we have been very fortunate to have had dedicated Kapa Haka tutors and the group perform regularly at many venues including the Rest homes, civic openings and various festivals. We also have a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy and these aspects of the curriculum have priority. To assist in these areas we run the Perceptual Motor Programme across the three Junior classes in Term 2 and 4 and Talk to Learn in Terms 1 and 3

Selwyn Park School has always been at the forefront in promoting Education Outside the Classroom, and the year six Hikoi where the children over the course of five days hike the coast from Waikara to the Hokianga Harbour, has become a rite of passage for our senior students. Every year we also strive to have at least one whole school trip. Places visited over the last four years have been the Zoo, The Museum, Kelly Tarltons and the Treaty Grounds, MOTAT. The school is also part of the Duffy Schools Program and we have regular visits from prominent high achieving Kiwi’s each term. This year we have been visited by ex Black Ferns captain Anna Richards. Selwyn Park is also fortunate in that we are able to host the Northern Wairoa Gifted Kids Programme. This class operates every Tuesday and Wednesday and caters for a number of the gifted and talented students in our area. In conclusion, a quote from the 2012 ERO report states “The school has a strong relationship with the wider community. Students are confident and capable learners. They enjoy positive interactions with each other and their teachers. Students well -being is nurtured through the provision of several initiatives that support their health and well-being. A safe inclusive culture is promoted.”

Local businesses including Nor thpower, Depar tment of Conservation, Countdown, BNZ and ANZ set up stalls letting students know their options after school. Students were shown a video made by year 13 budding filmmakers, Josh Welsh and Eric Comber. They interviewed businesses asking for their advice on first time employment. Attitude was the most important attribute for employers and that was backed up by exhibitors. Terangi Williams at the BNZ stall left school at 16 and doesn’t have a university qualification however BNZ employed her recognising her people skills and attitude. Kaipara Employment

for Youth’s after school contact, Pauline Taylor, says it’s about connecting young people with jobs and letting them know there are opportunities in their hometown available. “We want to make sure young people aren’t lost at the end of the school system and let them know that there are career paths in Kaipara.” The organisation has had funding from Rotary and has been operating for 18 months in connection with Gateway coordinator and careers advisor for the high school, Claudia Guthrie-Oehlinger. They are currently in the process of creating a database of all the businesses who employ people to help connect youth with employment. ¢

End of an era for the Funky Fish  by Rose Rees-Owen

Owner of the Funky Fish, Beth Kelliher, says it’s time for a change, and has put the iconic cafe and bar in Baylys Beach up for sale. Beth bought the property, along with Dave and Kate Northover, in September, 2000. It was the Baylys Beach Store, and the trio along with staff members, Aym and Ditch Wade lived in one room onsite while they set up the cafe and bar. Dave was an excellent chef, Kate a graphic designer who came up with the logo, and Beth had years of hospitality experience after travelling the world working in bars and restaurants to support herself. “There are so many places that you walk into and the ambiance is cold — we wanted to create somewhere warm and inviting.” It seems they have succeeded. When Beth announced the news the cafe was on the market on

Facebook, she was inundated with messages of grief and well wishes with one person commenting, ‘be proud Beth, you’ve really put the beach on the map’. Up and coming musicians have added the Funky Fish to their tours, they’ve hosted murder mystery nights and quiz nights, and for Beth moving on is a mixture of emotions. “I love this place — I really hope someone enthusiastic will take over and bring new fresh ideas and keep it going.” She says it would suit a young couple and she would like to stay on as an employee. Kate and Dave sold their share of the cafe around five years ago and Beth has been the sole owner.

p The Funky Fish staff From left: Aym Wade, Karla Olsen Ranger, Carolyn Gaylor, Pete O'Neill, Beth Kelliher (owner), Punnee Haigh, Steph Calder and Dan Collett. Absent Carol McCahan

For someone who loves to travel, the cafe has kept her from seeing her nephews in New York and visiting family in Germany and she is excited about the future. It’s listed with John Powell from First National in Dargaville, who sold the Funky Fish to the trio 12 and a half years ago. ¢

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

Agricultural Training for New Zealand Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre has been successfully training Kiwis for agricultural careers since 1919 and has been training in Northland in partnership with NorthTec since January 2012. Using skills and knowledge gained at Taratahi, graduates have the opportunity to move into a rich and rewarding career in one of the world’s leading agricultural industries. Taratahi offers full-time courses, extra mural study, short courses and STAR/Gateway programmes as well as the Primary Industries Trades Academy (PITA). New courses starting next month include a 19-week Certificate in General Farm Skills (Level 3) course (Dargaville), a 40-week National Certificate in Farming Skills (Work Ready) Level 3 in Whangarei and a National Certificate in Agriculture – Level 4 (throughout Northland). Taratahi this month signed an agreement to become the Sharemilkers on Ian and Helen Hilford’s 232 hectare dairy farm in Titoki, providing Northland’s students with valuable on-site experience and knowledge and practising Taratahi’s real training on real farms’ philosophy. Taratahi Farm Business Manager Tony Dowman says Taratahi has been looking for the right dairy farm in Northland for the last 18 months. “We need to make sure that our students are experiencing all sorts of different farming situations and people because that is what they are going to be dealing with when they finish training with us and are in their first job on a farm,” Mr Dowman says. For more information, contact northland@taratahi.ac.nz; Freephone 0800GOFARM, or go to www.taratahi.ac.nz
