p Ladies of the Northern Wairoa Country Women’s Club met to celebrate the organisation’s 60th birthday in Dargaville this week, with a ‘diamond jubilee’ worthy lunchtime function. Established in 1959, the club came together to, in the words of the current president Lynn Harnett ‘provide fellowship and a place to meet while farming husbands were at the sale yards or in town for business’. It has grown to be much more during the years, with members expressing their fond memories of good times among club friends at the 60-year celebration. A large group of current and previous members gathered from both the local area and points further afield to enjoy a catered lunch and entertainment, while sharing stories and catching up with old friends.

Mayor supports landfill rahui
u by Paul Campbell
Dog control measures are being undertaken by Kaipara District Council following submissions from more than 200 residents about its dog control policy as well as a petition seeking action on a series of dog-related incidents in and around Dargaville. “Known dog owners with menacing type dogs will receive an information pack in the mail shortly,” said council spokesman Benjamin Hope. Owners of menacing type dogs are obligated to have their pets neutered or spayed as part of the national strategy to reduce the risk and harm of dog attacks. Under New Zealand laws, four breeds and one type of dog are automatically classified as menacing. These are the breeds Brazilian Fila, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Perro de Presa Canario and the American Pit Bull Terrier type of dog. “National and local law requires all classified menacing dogs to be desexed and microchipped. They must also be muzzled while in a public space and the council is working to ensure all menacing dogs in our district are compliant with the classification. We encourage owners of menacing dogs to get in behind this programme and help make our communities safer.” The council adds it is working to bring the animal, noise and parking service, currently contracted to Armourguard, as
an in-house service by March next year to ensure it is able to proactively respond to the communities demand for better and improved animal management and allow for more proactive education, patrolling and monitoring of animal complaints. LETTER TO THE EDITOR On June 15 last, The Den at Maungaturoto’s Bickerstaffe Road, a charity-based second-hand fundraising venture, was broken into. Not a lot was taken — a small amount of cash, and also a green-coloured men’s Timberline mountain bike, (which should be highly noticeable where there was none before?). Over the last three or more years in excess of $70,000 has been dispersed from the Den to various
charities, including the Riverview Rest home dementia unit fundraiser, St John, rescue helicopter and local schools. To the volunteers at The Den who give tirelessly of their time and the generous people who donate and purchase goods, this act of theft is extremely disappointing. When we catch whoever is responsible, the full effect of law will take its course. Thank you, Albie Paton and The Den crew

Expertise and focus make the difference Rural real estate specialist Todd Skudder may be new to this facet of the farming industry, but evidence of his more than threedecade relationship with Northland farming shines through as he talks about his first major sale; a success for all involved. When lifelong farmers Rosemary and Richard Drake made the tough decision to sell their historic Pohoatua sheep and beef farm, they engaged Todd’s help to ensure a great result. “The decision to sell Pohoatua, the farm where we had spent a lifetime and which had been in Rosemary’s family for over 100 years … saw us torn between wanting to retain our lifetime heritage and embarking on new opportunities,” says the Drakes. “Todd’s commitment to marketing attracted a number of buyers to attend the auction, and ensured we achieved full market value.” It’s a testament to the insight Todd brings to his role, and the specialist skills needed to truly represent the best interests of the vendor in the world of rural and farming property. During his career, Todd has represented a multi-national animal health company a job that saw him forming relationships with farmers from all over Northland. In recent years, Todd has been a business and practice manager for a leading Northland veterinary organisation. Added to this, he’s a farmer himself! Paparoa village ‘expanding’ Sold stickers are going up quickly on the Paparoa Community Charitable Trust’s Twin Streams residential and retirement village project, which has been planned and designed for both family homes and retirement village accommodation handy to the town’s facilities. “Sales agreements are already signed for over one-third of the lots, and the funding target is within reach,” said trust chair, Graham Taylor. With lot prices starting from $140,000, he says people are seeing it as a good time to invest in their future. In some cases, they are making plans for when as ‘empty nesters’ a current home may become too big to manage easily and they would prefer a smaller more central location, but still be close to friends and familiar surrounds. One buyer spoken to by Lifestyler sees the Kaipara District as a whole growing, and Paparoa expanding
along with it. “We already have some good facilities, food outlets, the pub restaurant, as well as a cafe, hairdresser, florist, garage — we can only improve really. “When you look at the new town medical centre that has just recently opened, along with the new library, getting into property now, with really excellent prices, is a no-brainer,” he said following a subdivision open day. The Twin Streams — Wai Oranga Rua subdivision is in Franklin Rd while there are other site developments off Paparoa Valley Road adding to a small town that as the locals say ‘is really expanding’. ¢

Council wins recognition

The iconic Moreton Bay fig tree on the reserve waterfront at Pahi is to undergo some surgery following slumping to the ground of a major branch — a feature of the species in which it is able to grow roots and ‘springboard’ itself into new growth.
p Members of the Pahi Reserve Society inspect the taped-off grounded branch
Kaipara District Council consultants have inspected the tree and have described it in their report as “internationally significant.” “Parks staff met with Arborlab and Northland Treeworks to discuss maintenance on the tree at Pahi due to recent branch slumping,” said parks and reserve officer, Mike Collins. “This slumping has been a result of renewed health growth after its recent infestation of the ‘Chewing Gum’ psyllid.” The disease reduced the leaf coverage of the tree for some months before mulching and spraying appeared to clear the ailment. Mr Collins described remedial work, which will be undertaken.
“After careful consideration and discussion, we will start with some targeted trimming followed by some props to protect the branches; this is not to stop kids from climbing on the tree. Council will then be moving the picnic tables further out to the drip line edge and install some bollards to prevent vehicles from parking under the canopy and on the feeder roots. “All these actions are following Arborlab’s recommendations and will ensure the best future for this tree. Arborlab also pointed out that in their opinion, this tree is internationally significant and in general is performing very well.” ¢
Kaipara District Council has received a government accolade for the system under which it issues food business registrations, described as “setting a new benchmark across New Zealand.” “The Ministry of Primary Industry has asked for KDC to be a reference point for other councils and they want us to present our systems to the next environmental health conference,” said spokesman, Benjamin Hope. “This follows our accreditation assessment audit by Joint Accreditation Services Australia, New Zealand (JAS-ANZ), which closed with zero nonconformances, the first council to do so. The Food Act 2014 requires all territorial authorities who are currently issuing food business registration certificates to be accredited by September 2019. “Sue Williams, the lead auditor for JAS-ANZ, commended KDC on its comprehensive Quality Management System (QMS) and stated council has p Kaipara District Mayor, Jason Smith set the ‘new benchmark across New Zealand’. we’re technically compliant and The recognition has been welcomed meeting legislation can be detail by Kaipara Mayor, Jason Smith. “This is heavy and time-consuming work, an outstanding result for the team, and so to get such a glowing report is for Kaipara District Council. We connect people with organisations, some roles such as board members are long term commitments, and some are short term like environmental clean up days. There are positions listed on the Volunteering Northland website.
“Helping is a really positive thing, and new people to an area often volunteer to meet new people. Younger people come to give back to the community and can find events that fit in with their lifestyle. Even small roles are important, so the same people aren’t always busy. It is important that people feel they belong to something, and the community wins as a result. “Volunteering Northland works with more than 200 non-profit organisations and currently have more than 200 roles available. We are all in it together, and there are a lot of people who need to be thanked. We appreciate everyone who gets behind the different opportunities because they help make great things happen.” For more information, contact Volunteering Northland on 0800 865 268 or visit volunteeringnorthland. nz. ¢

RIVERVIEW
REST HOME AND VILLAGE
The Riverview Resthome and Village was established over twenty years ago by the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust Inc (MCCT) to serve the Maungaturoto District. Originally set up as a sixteen-bed Maungaturoto
Lakes Kai Iwi, Taharoa and Waikare are stocked yearly with rainbow trout fingerlings from the Rotorua hatchery. Fish & Game New Zealand, Northland Region manager Rudi Hoetjes says the release of fingerlings made annually in May takes advantage of abundant autumn feed allowing fish to reach takeable size within six to eight months of their release. “Fishers who have never experienced angling Kai Iwi style are encouraged to attend the contest and sample some of Northland’s wonderful trout, and experience Northland’s hospitality at a family focussed premiere fishing event,” says Rudi. “Tales of fishing this contest are told throughout the angling fraternity, and the eating quality of the fish exceeds the salmon that shoppers purchase from their local grocery store. “This year staff will be collecting the gut and heads from the trout presented at the weigh station. The information gathered will help to fill in more of the puzzle of the life histories of the interactions between the
stocked fishery and the indigenous native fish that live in these lakes.” Fishing begins on Saturday, July 6 from 7am and closes at noon on Sunday. Tickets and rules will be available from the Fishing Headquarters, Lake Waikare from 7am on opening day. Entry fee is $55 for adults, and all juniors and children are free to enter, but juniors must hold a current fishing licence. A BBQ lunch will be provided at the final weigh-in before the prize-giving at the fishing headquarters on Sunday from 12.30pm. “Our sponsors have provided a fantastic variety of prizes to win in the different categories for children, juniors and adult anglers,” he said. Tickets are available from McCoy & Thomas Sports and Nola’s Sports in Dargaville and through the Northland Fish & Game office and the Hunting & Fishing store on Okara Drive in Whangarei. Tickets can also be bought by phone at the Northland Fish and Game Council office on 09 438 4135 or by emailing northland@fishandgamenorthland.org.nz.

New hub for community groups
Dismissing and diminishing u by Matt King, Northland’s Member of Parliament
When it comes to final touches such as landscaping you know a project is nearing completion; that is certainly the case with the new Matakohe bridge and other infrastructure and enhancements to the area.
u by Andy Bryenton
Last week saw the opening of a new centre for a combined group of co-operative community organisations in Dargaville, with a main street frontage and facilities to help promote collaboration between them.
p Multiple organisations sharing one space
In all, organisations share the former Northland Regional Council office complex in Victoria Street, enjoying better amenities and more space as well as room to cooperate and share ideas. Under one roof clients will find the Whanau Focus Centre, headed up by Rachel Ashfrod and board chairperson Hal Harding, Elder Abuse emergency response person Mark Sears, Positive Parenting education advocate Yvette Gilchrist, experienced social worker Bethne Smith, Alzheimer’s Northland representative Maxine Kinvig, Tu Tamariki Youth Mentor programme coordinator Anaru Tana, and also
additional counselling services. Previously situated in disparate parts of the NRC-owned Big River FM buildings in Hokianga Road, the move has given all these community support initiatives more space to grow and to provide better results for those whom they assist. Funding means it would be nearly impossible for each group to have their own main street office; this collaboration makes it a reality. “There’s no ‘no’ coming through that door,” says Yvette, pointing out to the new reception area. “If we can’t help, among ourselves, we will find you someone who can.” ¢
It was an ambitious project, to begin with, but a necessary one. For too long this and other one-lane bridges hampered traffic, restricted heavy haulage, and far too often were a safety risk that became a reality. The previous National government acted and the two-laning of the most significant bridges on the list, Matakohe and Taipa, began and is now nearing completion. Work on other bridges has also begun, and, I hope —will continue. I say hope because, frankly, who knows with this government. So many projects instigated by the previous government seem to have been stopped or stalled by a leftwing coalition seemingly hell-bent on producing outmoded policies, catering only to its core constituency and languishing in multiple messes of its own making. There is a second thing that concerns me about this project now that it is so close to completion. Under normal circumstances, I would
expect a government to make hay out of successful project completion, particularly this government that has precious few of anything successful to crow about. Yet on this project — nothing. No announced official opening — that I know of. No announcements at all, other than some project updates from the NZTA. On that subject, you would think that the NZTA at least would be ‘sharing the joy’. However, no. Not a whisper. Why? Maybe the government (and the NZTA) won’t talk about something which, whilst of vital interest to the Kaipara community, owes more to the visionary insight of the previous government and less to the lackadaisical performance and evergrowing failures of this government. Is the government, in fact, diminishing ‘our’ accomplishment to avoid diminishing their own (what there is of them) by comparison? I think that might well be the case.

A Kaipara kauri initiative
Library’s future is chrome
u by Paul Campbell
u by Andy Bryenton
Kauri trees are popping up all over, as The Kauri Museum’s regeneration programme gathers momentum, with schools playing a big part in the project to increase kauri planted in Kaipara on public land.
As the first step in a nationwide initiative to allow more people to access digital information, Dargaville Library has rolled out a new system of wirelessly connected Chromebooks and ChromeStations this month.
Arbor Day saw 12 kauri planted at Matakohe School with principal Athol Cartwright and enthusiastic pupils planting both at the front of the school entrance and along the proposed cycleway from Ruawai to Paparoa that intersects the school’s boundary. Paparoa School also planted two trees and will plant more when their section of the cycleway is completed, while Tinopai School has also joined in with their own local plantings. “In addition a further eight kauri have been purchased by Fulton Hogan for planting alongside the new Matakohe Bridges and a further 13 have already been planted by NZTA at the Kauri Museum turn-off along the same route,” said museum board member Kay McKelvie who, along with fellow board member Deb Clapperton, is spearheading the scheme. “Similarly, a number of trees will be planted around the museum’s precinct. Our target is to plant 50 kauri trees this season and a further 100 each season thereafter. We are well on the way to meeting this year’s target. “If you want to contribute to this project, pop into the museum shop and buy a tree for the museum trust to plant,
p Young Lincoln Rae helps plant a tree
or buy one for your own property. Each purchase of a tree from the museum enables three trees to be planted,” says museum general manager, Tracey Wedge. “If you donate your purchase for public land planting, you also significantly increase the overall stock in the Kaipara. This ongoing project will reinforce the concept of the Kauri Coast and ensure kauri will be plentiful for the enjoyment of future generations.” ¢
p Students make use of the library’s new Chromebook technology after school to aid their studies
Library manager Lisa Salter says the new technology, powered by Google and made possible by the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa, has decreased wait times to access the internet, replacing their ageing fleet of four PCs with twelve modern laptopstyle devices and four touch screen fixed workstations. The intent is for APNK, in association with public libraries everywhere,
to make Chrome technology the standard for accessing the free highspeed broadband, which citizens use extensively for activities such as study and research, connecting with friends and social media. Alongside the new hardware, Dargaville’s library has a brand new catalogue portal, enabling quick access to their full list of hard copy books with a crisp new format. ¢

The rise of ‘organic’ shopping
Save Lives
We all know that the farmer’s market or weekly fruit and veggie stall day is the new, trendy way to source food for the kitchen, top chefs on television pore over fresh-from-the-fields produce at events like this every week, but how does that relate to items like laptops, shoes or lawnmowers? Taking a leaf from the farmer’s market book, many shoppers in the US and Europe are calling the new shopping trend ‘organic’, even though the items they are after don’t grow on trees. What they mean is that they are shopping as locally as possible, going to ‘indie’ or independent retailers to preserve the character of their towns and neighbourhoods. It’s more than just a hipster reaction to big-box blandness. There are solid mathematics and even some real eco-consciousness behind this new ideal. One hot spot for ‘organic’ shopping is the city of Chicago, where studies have proven that buying from what they would call a ‘mom and pop’ store pumps $68 from every hundred directly into the immediate neighbourhood. Compare that with only $43 to the hundred at a big, non-locally-owned chain. Total economic benefit per square foot of retail space is also improved in stores

which are locally owned (locally owned outlets under a major brand umbrella still make these gains too). Then there’s transport and durability, both of which impact a shopper’s eco-footprint. Locally owned shops tend to buy and recommend quality over mass-produced bulk ‘specials’, leading to a longer lifetime for goods. Drive time is also cut back. The study found that factoring
in the value of hours spent driving and shopping, plus petrol, meant that the small added cost associated with not patronising a ‘big-box’ mass importer was negated. Add in the service you get in a shop owned and staffed by people passionate about a niche product and their community, and there are a lot of reasons to shop local. ¢

Mid-Winter Christmas Voucher
The turning point of the season u by Andy Bryenton
This week your local Kaipara Lifestyler is full of promotions for midwinter Christmas. This holiday (which is most certainly made up) exists primarily because, when the real Christmas rolls around, we are bathed in tropical weather and don’t have the inclination to roast turkeys, wear scarves and bobble hats to go carolling, or gather around an open fire. Unless it’s a barbecue. However, is it? Midwinter is a time of the year which has been fascinating to mankind since the very earliest times we can look back on. Some of the earliest monuments ever found, such as those at Stonehenge, or Turkey’s 10,000-year-old Gobekli Tepe ruins, have markings or a layout indicating they were used as calendars to mark days like midwinter and the equinoxes. Every culture has midwinter legends, some of which have become part of our European Christmas tradition. The mistletoe of Christmas comes from the old druidic tradition, in which the head druid would climb an oak tree on midwinter’s day to harvest this plant for the making of potions. Other druids would hold out a white sheet to catch the sprigs as he cut them with a golden sickle. It is a part of the Welsh midwinter festival of Alban Arthuran,

literally referencing King Arthur, in which the Holly King and the Oak King perform a mock battle to ensure that winter ends. It’s a pervasive myth; some of you might recognise the druid with his golden sickle from the Asterix comic book series. Moreover, a fight between kings to determine if winter lasts forever? This was one of the main themes in recently concluded television series Game of Thrones. Just like in Europe, where Yule, the Norse midwinter is a time of feasting, the Chinese also celebrate the duality of the cosmos, the yin and yang of summer and winter, with a huge communal meal at this time of year. The Dongzhi festival is marked with special foods such as coloured dumplings and noodles. This tradition dates back to a king named Zhang Zhongjing in the Han Dynasty. On one cold winter day, he saw the poor

Feeling sympathetic, he ordered his apprentices to make dumplings with lamb and other ingredients, and distribute them among the poor to keep them warm. Our own Christmas story has a similar generous monarch, King Wenceslas, who has his own carol. Of course, most pertinent of midwinter stories to New Zealand is that of Matariki, which comes just a few days after the traditional middle of winter on June 22, the shortest day of the year. In Maori myth, the seven stars of the Pleiades represent a mother and her six daughters. It’s said that Matariki and her daughters journey across the sky each year to visit their tupuna wahine or great grandmother, Papatuanuku, Mother Earth. During this visit, each of the stars helps Papatuanuku to prepare for the year to come, using their unique qualities or gifts to bring life and rebirth to her, and hence the land. Whilst spending time with their grandmother, they also learn new skills and gain new knowledge from her, which they guard and pass on to others. A growing momentum in New Zealand to celebrate this ancient holiday means that there are now often Matariki celebrations in

towns across the nation. Dargaville is no exception, with a large festival of kapa haka, music, fire dancing, food and storytelling planned for June 6 this year. Across the world, people from various cultures have always seen the middle of
winter as a special time. It means that spring is on the way, the worst of the cold is over and that a village could look to its remaining food stores and know that they would last the distance. Having a feast on the shortest day is a celebration
of human ingenuity and resourcefulness overcoming the elements. So is midwinter Christmas really such a fabrication? Perhaps any excuse for a hearty meal and a get together with friends is excuse enough! ¢

FA R M I N G BUSINESS PROFILE
Engineered for success When Ryan Lusty and Tracey Sewell watched construction begin on their new business premises early this year, they were proud to know they were continuing on a legacy of rural engineering in Hakaru, which dates back to Kaiwaka Lime Co in the 1950s. Now open, their Engtech engineering facility is big, modern and ready to help solve problems for the wider community. Ryan, Tracey and their five staff are all about making short work of engineering puzzles, with a wealth of qualifications in different areas giving the crew some mental flexibility. Engtech, situated on a hilltop, which was once home to a working dairy farm between Kaiwaka and Mangawhai, has grown to accommodate the old milking sheds, a suite of offices, and a vast industrial building where modular workstations can be put together to tackle specific jobs. “There’s always something new and different,” says Ryan. “We like new challenges, and as the local name in general and mechanical engineering, we cover everything from agricultural equipment to heavy transport to cowshed repairs to fabrication.” With two years at the helm, it was time to expand and grow, and the
new premises, built with the help of Alpine Sheds and a top bunch of local contractors, are just the place to tackle big jobs. They don’t come much bigger than outfitting a fleet of more than 80 traffic safety trucks to patrol road works on the highways, and that’s one ongoing contract, which has boosted Engtech’s profile. Now that their expanded operation is up and running, Engtech is branching out into the supply of agricultural machinery parts, welding equipment, steel stock, and manufacturing specialities such as aluminium welding, boat trailer repair (for which they have their own pond), ute and truck deck fabrication and more. One thing is for sure: there’s no way that this busy team is going to be bored any time soon. Next to come is a media blasting and rust removal system to help keep steel machinery in top condition, adding even more tools to the Engtech repertoire.

“Y’no sumthing Dog, the locil body ilictions are just round the corner.” Well, gidday readas, an’ that just came froma Boss, so I shot downa cattle stop atta road gate, and had look down atta corner by the dairy runoff. Yep, obvious eh. Boss gotta bee in his bonnit again ‘cos there was no ‘iliction’ caming that I cood see. So I came back and there was his gerlfrend Sharlene with cuppatees, an’ she just lookt at me an sed, ”Nah Billy, Boss meens that people gonna go an’ vote fer such things as hostibal boards, an’ councils an’ things, an’ wen he sez jus’ round the korner, he meens they coming soon.” Sometime readas I shake me head, not just wen I jump outa the farm dam an a swim, but wena Boss says sumthing his Dog dussint unnerstand! Hows we supposted to runa farm together? Then Sharlene sed: “Why are ya thinking about tha ilictions deah?” An Boss sed: “Me an’ Billy went inter tha Pap Pub yestiday, an’ we wint over that new bita road at Matikoey. Tell yer wot, that’s pritty amazing eh. A blimming top quality stretch of motoway ina middil of a blimin goat track rilly! Amazing bridgis, road barriers an’ landscapin’ All for about a mile or so, an’ then yer hit the old highway an’ yer might as well be back ina 1930’s were the road condition

is. So I was thinkin’ maybe I shud stand fer council and try an’ fix tha roads?” Sharlene lookt at me in a wurried voice, an’ I git her messif. Boss in charge ofa farm is one thing. But in charge ova roads? Sharlene give Boss a pat ona shoulder, an’ said: ”Deah, yer mite be ona a highway to nothing? (There they go aghin readas, I thought the new road was a highway ter nothing, an’ Boss isn’t on it now?). “Yes,” sed Sharlene agin. “I went down ter Pahi for a cupptee with my mate Julee the other day, an’ guess wot. There’s this big slip wot’s under investigashon by the council. Funny thing is it’s been under investigashon for three blimmin yeers now? Or just about that long. Yer wood have thort that by now it wood be complete and over tha top investigated from top ter bottom. But nope, investigashon seems ter be still underway. “So wot I am saying deah, is that if yer going to try an fix our roads, yer gonna get frustatid, an’ then yoo’ll get angry, an then yore blud pressha will go up, an’ — well, I juss reckin you mite be much happer hear ona proppity, wear Billy an’ I can keep an eye on ya. Ya shood leave the roads, witch seem to be unfixable, ter the peeple that like bangin’ heads against brick walls.”
“Yeah,” seda Boss. “Well, Dog, at least we kin play roads ona farm eh?” Boss looked atta new tracta he got atta Mistry Creek Feel Daze. “C’mon then Dog, we kin go ova to the limestone cut ona back hill, an’ chuck sum limeston ona kattil race. Hey, an’ we kin stick a new layer ona kattilstop driveway. That way we kin fix out own roads, an’ leeve the outside world to politishins.” Sounds like fun to me then readas. That Sharlene pritty smart sumtimes. Cheers, Billy
