Around 80 year three and four students came out on the clear winter’s day to let off some steam in Wellsford as part of a series of events held throughout Northland to introduce students to the game in a safe and fun environment. “It helps with skills development and to understand how the game is being played. We have some students who have never played before, and for them, it’s an intro to rippa. Mostly it is to have fun and be part of a team with friends,” said Peter Hugo of Northland Rugby.

The de Jong brothers are of Ngati Pikiao and Ngati Tuara descent, and Ethan is also of Maori descent. Henry says performing in Te Reo Maori gives them the ability to sing about things that are personal to them and their family.

 A band with a Kaipara connection is taking the world by storm with their debut album

 Baylys Beach Society members and local residents at the site of the proposed community centre on the corner of Seaview Road and Bayly Street

Newly-elected chairperson of Baylys Beach Society, Cheryl Carmichael, says the new building will be a positive addition to the area. “This facility will give the Baylys and wider communities a place to gather, to potentially have functions and meetings, to develop specific interest groups such as arts, craft and exercise. “The need for a base for the Baylys Surf Life Saving Club is essential as the Northern Wairoa population continues to increase, along with numbers of tourists and holidaymakers. The local club will also provide another sports option from Young Nippers, our youth, right through to the older members.” Baylys Beach Lifeguards patrolled the beach between December 24 2017, until January 14 2018, over a total of 528 hours. They logged one rescue, two assisted, two major first aid cases, five minor, one

search call-out, 270 plus preventative actions with over 1,000 people involved in these actions such as careless driving and vehicle accidents on the beach. Public submissions regarding this proposed community facility can be sent to Kaipara District Council via council@kaipara.govt.nz or by using the official submission form available from reception at council until 4pm, July 3. Emails and letters need to contain the name, method of contact, for or against with reasons and if you wish to speak, should the council decide to have a public hearing. Full information on the project is available from council offices in Dargaville and Mangawhai or on the council website. There is also a petition at Sharky’s Takeaways at Baylys, Baylys Beach Holiday Park and another circulating in and around Dargaville. 

“That’s something we always want to make sure we have. As for what we hope our audience takes away from it; I feel that if our audience goes home feeling like they want to know more and want to understand more about New Zealand’s history, that’s a huge part of our goal complete. “We also hope to connect with our audience on a personal level, because we have a passion for everything we write about, so we want our audience to share those passions and feel connected to what we’re doing.” The band will set off on their first international tour in July, which will see them perform at some of the world’s largest metal festivals and will be the first time out of New Zealand for Ethan and Henry. “It’s such an honour to be

able to go out there and not only show the world our music — but also to be representing Maori culture and New Zealand as well.” Manager and father of Henry and Lewis, Niel De Jong, says he is very proud of the band’s achievements. “It’s been a pleasure to have been part of the early journey. We now have a whole team working around the band here and in Europe. It’s been a steep learning curve but an exciting one. Lewis particularly has had his eye on this since he was eight years old, so it’s in some ways, not a surprise it’s happening. It is, however, a pleasant surprise to see the world passionately embracing their debut album. We are so grateful for the love and acceptance from everyone.” 

Indoor tsunami sirens available A new indoor tsunami siren is now available and creating a ‘wave’ of interest amongst Northlanders who live, work or holiday on the coast.

Self-reflection challenge  by Jill Dickie

A ‘thought-provoking’ new exhibition has opened at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville where visitors are invited to visit and spend time in self-reflection, just as the artists have done in creating their works.

 Simon Jones, Northpower electrician and Victoria Harwood, spokesperson for the Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group with the newly-produced indoor tsunami siren units

The indoor plug-in sirens feature a loud alarm as well as a flashing blue light for the hearing impaired and alert people in evacuation zones of a pending tsunami. “We’re introducing them for those who, for whatever reason, may be unable to hear local outdoor tsunami sirens,” says the spokesperson for the Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, Victoria Harwood. The sirens have been developed by Northland CDEM group and Northpower over the last year and only work on Northland’s Northpower or Top Energy networks. Each siren is synchronised to operate with the region’s 191 outdoor tsunami

sirens. Both will sound simultaneously in the event of a genuine tsunami warning and during regular twice-yearly regional testing. “Purchasers must make sure to buy the correct indoor siren designed to operate in their local power network; otherwise they won’t work,” Mrs Harwood says. To check whether the Northland building being considered for an indoor tsunami siren is in a tsunami evacuation zone, enter its street address at nrc. govt.nz/evacuationzones. Sirens cost $155.25 and can only be purchased in person from the Northland Regional Council offices on Water Street, Whangarei. 

 Exhibitor Sue Curtis with her self-reflective artwork

Members of the Dargaville Arts Association were briefed to create an artwork using any chosen medium, which would show their interpretation of self-reflection. The resulting pieces display a range of views — from meditative to interactive to deeply personal, and each item is for sale. “We are very pleased with the results. The artists have put a lot of thought into it, and it’s been very thought-provoking for both the artists and the viewers,” said Dargaville Arts Association business manager, Sue Curtis. The use of paint on canvas was

a popular choice with artists creating a visual ambience, in particular, one work depicting a chimpanzee considering the raindrops falling around him. Wood was the medium of choice for another artist who displayed a reflection of the colourful and creative part of herself versus the calmness of black and white — a thoughtful piece recognising the two sides to a personality. One other creation showed the artist to be a wearer of many hats, and another a simple reflection in the chrome bumper of a car. The exhibition will remain on display until July 4. 

Local marae decline hui invitation  by Ayla Miller

Five marae in the Northern Wairoa area have been approached by Tegel Foods Ltd for consultation over the company’s proposed broiler chicken farm at Arapohue with two declining the invitation. In addition to the disputed hui, held without consulting Kapehu Marae, in Auckland on June 6, Kapehu, Naumai, Oturei and Ripia and Te Houhanga were invited to individual hui organised by Tegel. Kapehu, Ripia and Te Houhanga declined Tegel’s request. “Naumai had one hui on Monday morning (June 11) but declined Tegel’s request for a second one,” said Kapehu Marae chair, Professor Margaret Mutu. Kapehu Marae released a statement expressing concern that the purpose of these hui were Tegel’s attempt at gaining the support of the other marae and for them to put pressure on Kapehu Marae to be in favour of the farm. “Tegel are now trying to hold hui on other marae in the Northern Wairoa to gain their support instead. We would appreciate the support of the marae by not engaging in the process.” A Tegel spokeswoman said the hui are part of the ongoing community consultation regarding the project.

“The purpose of the hui is to provide information on Tegel’s proposal to build a state-of-the-art free-range poultry farm at Arapohue in Northland and to give attendees the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposal. “The plans for these hui have come out of ongoing discussions and engagement between Tegel and local mana whenua over several months, including the hui that Tegel attended at Kapehu Marae in May. We are approaching the hui with good faith, and a genuine desire to engage and listen.” The proposed facility could stock up to 1.3 million chickens and employ 32 people on 250 hectares of land at Arapohue. Broiler chickens would be raised on-site and transported to Tegel's processing plant in Auckland for slaughter. Objections from Kapehu Marae have focussed on close proximity to the marae cemetery, as well as perceived noise and pollution threats.

ANZAC Theatre turns five  by Ayla Miller

The ANZAC Theatre in Dargaville has brought the latest blockbusters, classic films and local filmmaking talent to the big screen for five years this July.

 The Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust is proud to celebrate the theatre’s fifth birthday

Around nine years ago a group of locals were determined to create a space where people could watch up to date movies and get involved in film and other creative events. “Four years later the ANZAC Theatre opened [on July 12], and here we still are, providing an entertainment base for all ages, families, individuals — anyone who wants to come along and enjoy what we offer,” says trustee, Josie Scott. “The name was chosen in honour of the Anzacs as we are situated in the war memorial hall with the beautiful flag recognising local soldiers. We had to seek permission from the RSA and the Governor-General to use the name and are proud that we were given

permission. It’s just an example of the detail we went to — in order to create a special place for the community. Our volunteers help to keep everything going, without them we would not be able to run, plus of course, we employ a full-time manager and parttime administrator.” Driving force behind the cinema, Jacoba Puharich, says the trust is very proud of this achievement and grateful for all the community support. “It’s a community organisation, and it provides a place for people to come together very casually. “It gives people a common interest to talk about.” To celebrate, all tickets to films showing on Sunday, July 1 will be $5. 

Hip-hop crew go national

Preserving school tradition  by Ayla Miller

7

 by Ayla Miller

With more than 95 per cent of their students participating in the kapa haka group, Kaiwaka School is running out of flax costumes or piupiu, and is calling on the community to help.

Dance crews from Bull Bar Dance Studio in Dargaville represented their town for the first time on the national stage at the Project Youth Hip-Hop competition held in Maunganui.

 Students of Bull Bar Dance Studio had the chance to show off their skills on the national stage at the Project Youth Hip-Hop competition  The Kaiwaka School kapa haka group are in need of new costumes Photo credit: Josie Gritten Photography

With a rapidly increasing school roll, the kapa haka group is also growing, and there are no longer enough costumes to go around. “We would love some help to replace, upgrade and increase the number of costumes. Our costumes are very, very old. They are taonga — treasure — and they are very valuable to us, but every time the children wear them now a bit more breaks away. They are getting a little bit threadbare, and we would like our community to support us in getting top-quality replacements, so the mana — prestige — of wearing them

remains,” said Kaiwaka School principal, Rosie Ellis. “The kids feel really fabulous when they wear them. It brings out the best in them and they have a wonderful sense of belonging — which is really important. Kaiwaka School Board of Trustees has pledged half the cost of the new costumes, and now the school needs assistance to raise the other half. Donations can be made directly to the school or through the GiveaLittle page by searching Piupiu for Kaiwaka School Kapa Haka Group. 

Sharon Henare of Bull Bar said the experience was ‘awesome’ for the children, many who had not been on a national stage before. “This competition was not about a placing; it was about the feel, the atmosphere, the community and crazy experience they had walking on that stage representing their town for the very first time at Project dance competition,” she said. “These kids have made a mark within the hip-hop community throughout New Zealand, and now have been invited to upskill at other studios around the country throughout the year as well as attending more competitions in the

near future. We are all about creating these opportunities for these kids and letting them experience something fresh and new.” The dance studio is now extending an invitation to the Kaipara area and hopes more students will join their Rustlers Crew aged 9–12 or the RipTide Crew Boys and girls for ages 13–17. “They don’t need to know much about dance just need commitment and the right can do attitude. Our goal now is to create a strong crew and head to Battle of the Bays later on in the year. Other than that it’s all about the experience.” 

Kauri dieback fundraiser Breakfast at kindy

9

Efforts to fight kauri dieback disease are to get a boost in funding from The Kauri Museum with a ‘dieback donation’ on sales of a book featuring early conservationist and celebrated early New Zealand photographer, Tudor Washington Collins. “In addition to preserving our past, The Kauri Museum has a role to play in conserving our future, collaborating to save our forests by raising public awareness to control the spread of the disease and promote forest ecology,” said museum CEO, Lisa Tolich. “We are fortunate to be the recipient of a large collection of Tudor Collins original works, as well as his reflections from his time spent in the kauri bush. Paul Campbell’s popular book, Kauri Cameraman, brings together a collection of Tudor’s memorable images from our past and is a perfect gift for those who wish to help us raise funds to support ground-truthing initiatives in the fight against this dieback disease. Each book sold from the museum  The Kauri Museum CEO, Lisa Tolich, with the fundraising book shop and via the website will result in a $10.00 donation.” ‘Trees that took a thousand or more that we reflect on the devastation that years to grow were felled in a day, and was wrought among the giants of the it is not without feelings of shame forest…’ — Tudor Washington Collins. 

 Children, parents and teachers from Dargaville Kindergarten joined together to celebrate Matariki with a breakfast. A full spread of cereals, toast and cooked foods were advertised on a poster made by Charlotte (pictured in the centre of the photo) and her friends. Afterwards, children wrote a wish on a star to attach to the Matariki wishing tree.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR To the editor, At this stage we have a progressive government, offering a generous regional development fund. Also, Kiwirail has new management and just reopened the line to Gisborne. This is a golden opportunity for us to get a railway line from Dargaville to Marsden Point. This could carry freight and save heaps on road maintenance. Also, it would open up the possibility of a regular tourist train from Auckland to Dargaville. Tourists

could stay a few days here and make day trips to local sights and also to Paihia, Matapouri Bay, Hundertwasser etc by minibus. Dargaville could then become the gateway to the north. Maybe tourists could go back by boat via Helensville, then train to Auckland. This idea would appeal more as the roads out of Auckland become more dangerous and congested. Thank you, Lance Bullock

Polar fleece overheats Updated recycling brochures  by Jill Dickie

 by Jill Dickie

Now that winter is here Plunket New Zealand, and its staff are warning parents to stay away from wrapping babies in polar fleece, as they may overheat.

The Kaipara District’s waste minimisation education and promotion organisation Love Kaipara is to distribute its annual recycling flyer around the district within the next few weeks.

 Brochure designer and project coordinator Emma McLean and project manager Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock  Peacefully sleeping in cotton and wool

Polar fleece will warm a baby; however, as they are unable to regulate their temperature well, they can’t cool off. The fabric is not breathable and is best kept as an extra layer to use while outside — but not while sleeping. The material is also highly flammable. Plunket says blankets, wraps and clothing should be made from natural fibres such as wool or cotton to help prevent overheating. These can be more expensive than synthetics, and some Plunket groups sell woollen items made by volunteers. “Our local Kaiawhina and Plunket nurses provide

support and advice to whanau about the most suitable fabrics to keep babies safe in bed, such as merino wool or cotton”, says Northland clinical services manager, Diane Lawson. “We also talk to parents and whanau about how to keep the whole house warm, especially in the winter months. Our volunteers also work with staff to arrange packs for some local families that include knitted blankets and other clothing.” Anyone with any concerns should contact their local Plunket group for advice. 

Love Kaipara and the Kaipara District Council have collaborated on the project to inform residents about ways to reduce waste. Like many councils, the KDC is facing the problem of storing unwanted plastics due to China rejecting foreign plastics for their reprocessing industry. “There is no magic bullet for this plastics crisis,” said Love Kaipara project manager, Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock. “Our job is to educate the public about waste reduction strategies.” Working to change people’s behaviour around waste requires a collaborative approach, and this is a key element of the updated flyer.

“Waste reduction is the best first step each of us can take every day,” said Kaipara Mayor, Jason Smith. “The 2018 flyer that Love Kaipara has produced makes it easier for me and my family to focus on the changing story around recycling in Kaipara District.” The current Love Kaipara project educates Kaipara primary school children and promotes waste minimisation via print, radio, and social media. The project runs through to 2020. Ms del la Varis-Woodcock knows there is a big task ahead in leading Kaipara towards zero waste, “but we all need a vision. Working for a better future is my philosophy.” 

Happy kids, healthy hearts

A swinging success

 by Ayla Miller

 by Ayla Miller

Dargaville Kindergarten has been awarded the Whanau Award from the Heart Foundation for embracing a heart-healthy ethos.

Mangawhai Golf Club junior player Robby Turnbull has come out on top whilst competing against the world’s best young golfers, ages 5–18, in Scotland for the eleventh annual US Kids Golf European Championship.

 Dargaville Kindergarten and Heart Foundation nutrition adviser for Northland, Abi Alger (front right) with the Whanau Award

The Heart Foundation’s Healthy Heart Award provides early learning staff with a range of information, planning tools and one-on-one support to aid them in achieving the award. “The teachers have found some really fun and exciting ways to learn about eating healthy and being physically active. They are doing a great job of spreading the message about what it means to eat healthily and be active,” says Heart Foundation nutrition adviser for Northland, Abi Alger. “I’m very impressed with the creative way in which this kindergarten has been collaborating with parents and caregivers through fantastic initiatives such as the ‘crop swap stall’.“

The award has three different levels and works like a bronze, silver and gold system. Each level has four strands, and once the participating service has completed all four strands, they become a Healthy Heart Award ECE service. Dargaville Kindergarten head teacher, Emma Parson, says the award is recognition for the work the teachers, parents and children have put in. “It’s been a really authentic thing for us. It wasn’t so much about winning the award but about incorporating it into everyday life. “The children were also in charge of redesigning their own playground, so they have real ownership in the promotion of healthy choices.” 

The 11-year-old has been playing golf since he was three and is coached by Terry Young. “It’s a wonderful achievement for Robby and sets him on a career path if he decides to go that way,” Terry said. “He is competing with the best in the world. If you compete early with the best, you have a greater chance at success. There’s no point starting in a small pool and then being thrown into a big pool. “Getting these results early means the task gets a little bit easier and increases his chances of getting sponsors.” Robby rose to the top of the leaderboard with a final score of seven under par and 209 strokes on the 18hole Cragielaw golf course. Second, went to Sean Cooper from Dubai and Connor Graham from the United Kingdom came third. 

Winter blues banished  by Andy Bryenton

There’s change in the air in Dargaville’s main street, with another familiar name undergoing a leap forward in design, space and content. Elf Organics and Wellness will have been operating for five years on August 1 this year ‘so it felt like time for a change’, says owner Jeni Gorrie. Moreover, what a change it’s been! A look through the door — the new one, leading right out onto Victoria St — reveals a whole new store, packed with all you need to weather the blast of winter ailments and chills. “With winter wetness upon us there are remedies for the usual colds and flu,” says Jeni. “Something I would recommend is to dose yourself appropriately when using natural remedies. If you have a viral or immune formula that has you taking a capsule two to three times daily, you could also add vitamin C or a homoeopathic remedy in between doses. For example, Viralex attack capsule in the morning, vitamin C mid-morning, Viralex lunchtime, Vit C afternoon, Viralex evening and so on. This way, your immune system is getting good support every couple of hours for a few days then you can drop the doses back as you feel better.” That’s not the only surprise here to get the drop on seasonal ailments. There are also mood and sleep formulas to help us through the winter, as we

More than a made-up holiday  by Andy Bryenton

Focus

Each year we celebrate the upside-down holiday of ‘midwinter Christmas’ in the Kaipara with the competition you see on these pages — a little incentive to leave the fireside and come out to enjoy the best of what our boutique stores and eateries have to offer. However, why drop the festival which mixes up the birth of Jesus with old pagan traditions in the wrong place on the calendar at all? The truth is, many of us just love that proper Christmas fare. Moreover, in midsummer, a roast turkey with all the trimmings is a heavy meal to make and to eat! Any excuse for plum pudding, a hearty roast and a big trifle, eh? Well, perhaps there’s more to it than that. Around the world, the midwinter solstice — the day with the longest night — has been special to many cultures. Most importantly here in New Zealand, the annual rise of the ‘seven sisters’ — the Pleiades star cluster — marks the beginning of Matariki, a time of reflection on the year past, and a traditional feast. Some say this time-honoured Maori tradition should supplant Queen’s Birthday as a public holiday, as it is definitively a New Zealand celebration. Oddly, Matariki mirrors exactly the old druidic Yule from halfway around the planet — a big feast to celebrate surviving the worst of winter, and a time to look back on the year that had gone by. Some tribes in pre-Saxon England even practised a rough and ready democracy at this time, kicking out bad or greedy chieftains and replacing

them on the solstice day. In Japan, it’s traditional to take a long hot bath — preferably in the mineral pools which this island nation is famed for — along with bushels of lemons and oranges. This is called the yuzu-yu, and it brings good fortune as well as a good smell. In Korea, the solstice is time to make up a pot of red bean porridge — and smear it around the house to ward off bad luck for the coming year. Of course, there’s the most famous winter solstice moment of all, celebrated at perhaps the oldest timekeeping monument in Europe. Nobody knows how long the solstice sun had shone exactly at the right spot through the huge stones of Stonehenge, but now, as in times just after the ice age, people come to watch and sing ancient songs celebrating the turn of the seasons. So, midwinter Christmas may be a made-up holiday — but it’s one with roots deep in the collective psyche of humanity. In any case, do we really need an excuse to take stock of the year that’s passed, to wonder how we can be better people, and to share a fest with friends and family? No matter what your culture, from ancient hengebuilder to modern Kiwi, that’s always worth celebrating. 

The name Matich’s has come to mean a lot to Dargaville — a sign gracing the main street of the town beside the Northern Wairoa River for decades, and promising a good old-fashioned meal of seafood and hot chips. While the trimmings may change, and the decor has evolved as the street around the little shop in the middle of town has moved from old Ford Populars, Zephyrs and Chrysler Valiants through to more modern sets of wheels, the new owners of this iconic eatery are keeping up a tradition of quality.

It shows through in the detail with which they have tweaked and spruced up the venerable Matich’s building, breathing more light and colour into the space while capturing a funky, retro-Kiwiana vibe. Of course, it’s the simple but perfectly executed classics on the menu, which have attracted a buzz already, after only a week of business. Those, and the return of a window full of fresh fish and other delights from the ocean, including mussels and oysters, kina, and flounder so fresh this past Friday morning that their gills were ruby red — a sure sign, flounder fishermen will tell you, of a catch no long out of the water. Taking such a fresh morsel, treating it to a dip in homemade batter and serving it up with rich tartare sauce, crispy chips and salad with a slice of lemon in traditional, but like the game of chess, it seems to be something easy to grasp but harder to perfect. To use the same analogy,

the new team at Matich’s have scored a checkmate. With a menu full of old favourites — yes, the world famous in Dargaville savoury sausages are still a firm fixture — and some fresh twists to improve on the formula of things like burgers

and hot dogs on a stick, this is dine-in or takeaway Kiwi cuisine at its grassroots best. The traditional name still remains proudly on the window, but in the kitchen, it’s a definite case of the best of the old and the new. 

Fishing friendly contest casts off  by Andy Bryenton

It’s undoubtedly the highlight of the 2018 Northland Trout Fishing calendar — a trip to spectacular Kai Iwi lakes in the still calm of a winter’s day. Crystal clear water in which swim some of the finest trout in the country. Furthermore, a day to pit the best in talent and technique against them! Anglers who have not experienced angling Kai Iwi style should make this the year to sample Northland trout and experience the Kauri Coast hospitality. Tales of fishing this contest are talked about throughout the angling fraternity, and feedback from anglers who fish this event annually is that they enjoy it because it is family and fun focussed. Fishing commences on Saturday, July 7 from 7.00am until noon on Sunday, July 8. The event is set up to encourage new anglers into the sport of freshwater angling — a whole new world compared to fishing in salt. To encourage this time-honoured pastime, Fish and Game allows free entry for children and junior anglers into the competition. To entice even more people to drop a line in the water, there are ample prizes on offer. As well as the section prizes this year there will be some bonus lucky draws, taken from ticket holders with the major prize draw being a kayak,

Pay attention!

which has been generously donated by Viking Kayaks. Lake Taharoa and Lake Waikare are stocked annually with oneyear-old rainbow trout fingerlings, which can live in the lakes for up to two to three years. The trout grow very well with the varied diet the lakes, and their environs provide resulting in a wonderful eating fish. Tickets are now available from sporting goods stores Hunting and Fishing and Nolas Sports in Dargaville, Hunting and Fishing, Okara Drive, Whangarei and from the Northland Fish and Game office and online. For those last minute deciders, tickets can be purchased from the Fishing Headquarters, at Lake Waikare from 7.00 am on Saturday, July 7, and hot food will be available at the weigh-in and prize-giving on Sunday from 12.30 pm at the same spot. Special thanks go out to all the wonderful sponsors who have made this event possible — now, get out there, grab a ticket and join in the action! 
