Mr Vernon Suckling, from Ag Tech Industries Ltd in Dargaville, has won the Golden Standard Award for Innovation at the Mystery Creek Fieldays for a quad-bike roll bar which is flexible, while at the same time supporting the weight of the vehicle when upside down. The device attracted the attention of Prime Minister John key at Mystery Creek, as well as innovation scouts from around the world. It is protected by patents. “I took the ATV Lifeguard as we have called it to Mystery Creek because a lot of people go there to look for new ideas,” said Mr Suckling. “I did not think of an award or anything. I was just looking to see it gave others a chance in an accident.” Mr Suckling was inspired to create ATV Lifeguard because crushing is the most common cause of injury and death in quad bike accidents in New Zealand, and Australia. The device is flexible and yeilding instead of solid and rigid, as is the case with roll-over bars currently in use. The segmented construction is a new innovation which has the ability to deflect around a persons body, limbs or head, on impact, while still supporting the full weight of the vehicle. Mr Suckling expects production of the device to be geared up in New Zealand before the end of the year. It has already won approval from the Accident Compensation Corporation, Landcorp,

the Department of Labour and Australian Health and Safety. Farmers of New Zealand operations director, Bill Guest, says the ATV Lifeguard will be “invaluable.” He added that sheer numbers would ensure a market. “There are 60 million quad bikes across the United States alone. “It is soft at the point of impact when deflected but increasing in vertical strength. It cannot collapse, it can spport tons of weight. It’s strength comes from two fibre
cables inside nylon segments.” The Department of Labour says quad bike accident statistic reinforce the need for safety campaigns, and also the work being done to improve quad bike and farm safety in general. Last summer there were at least 11 separate incidents involving 13 people — with an even split between those that were work-related on the farm, and recreational accidents. Quad bike-related claims cost ACC approximately $8.6 million last year.

St John Maungaturoto Youth Division, formed just 15 months ago, has been awarded Northland District Division of the Year at the Annual Gold Competition held last month. They are also in the running for Northern Region of the Year later this month “The honour is awarded to the division that has demonstrated growth within the division, attended district courses and training opportunities, shown consistency in badge work and enthusiasm and pride in everything they do,” says divisional manager, Jodie Hosford. “Two gold cadet teams also participated in the competition for the first time and one of the teams received third place in CPR,” adds Jodie. Assistant Divisional Manager and Green and Blue Group leader, Nyree Alcock, also won Northland District Leader of the Year. “Congratulations to all the teams from
the youth division who participated. You all did us very proud.” “We are now getting teams ready for the Penguin, Green and Blue Groups competitions in August.” The cadets are also holding an Art Auction to raise money for St John Appeal Week, June 18-24. They provided us with commitment, strength, team work and was a huge improvement from the previous weekend’s game in Ruawai. Ruawai farmer, Greg Gent, commented on his apointment to chair the three member review team appointed to assist the Kaipara District Council resolve wide-ranging issues including massive debt. Mr Gent, has considerable knowledge of the Kaipara as a long-time resident, farmer and business owner. He is currently a director of the Southern Cross Healthcare Group, chair of the Farmers Mutual Group and a member of the Northland District Health Board. “I am looking forward to working alongside council to help resolve the issues. It is a little premature to predict too much, nevertheless, the starting position is that council has a considerable level of debt,” he said.. I am motivated by a desire to make a positive contribution to the Kaipara as I was born here and it is my home.” . The other members of the team, appointed last week by the Minister of Local Government, John Carter, are Leigh Auton, who has logged 35 years’ local government experience and who was chief executive of Manukau City Council from 2006 to 2010, and Peter Tennent, who served as mayor of New Plymouth from 2001 to 2010. The chair of the Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association, Ron Manderson, said he welcomes the panel as more qualified and pragmatic than any of the various advisors the council have had in the past but also expresses concerns. “While it is promising, the team will be limited in their influence due to their late arrival vis a vis the Draft LTP and with their power being restricted to that of an advisory role,” says Mr Manderson. “As talented and capable as the new panel are, I don’t perceive how the issues can be turned around unless sweeping powers are initiated in the form of a commissioner.” The review team is to inquire into the council’s core governance processes and ‘look into council’s communication, engagement and relationships with ratepayers and key stakeholders. The team will also assess the adequacy of council’s financial management.’ The review team will report to the Minister at the end of October.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

They were lined up at Pouto and ready to go on a September morning in 1912. The signal station reported — Sailed; 11-45am Katoa for Sydney, 11-30am Joan Craig for Hokianga and Joseph Craig barque, for Melbourne. At noon Marjorie Craig, barque for Adelaide. For ships from the Craig line it was like a sibling rivalry, with each in the total fleet of fifteen trying to outdo the other. Often some of them were in the same port on either side of the Tasman at the same time. Earlier in the year Louisa Craig and Joseph had met at Deal Island 146 miles from Melbourne heading for that port. It immediately turned into a contest. Louisa was three miles ahead
but morning light showed Joseph Craig in front and she won the race by one length. Louisa had hauled 570,000 feet of white pine from Whangarei and Joseph 600,000 feet of kauri and white pine from Kaipara. Joseph had joined the Craig stable in January 1907 and made her first trip to Kaipara Harbour in July. From then on it was almost a shuttle service loaded with timber for Australian ports, back loading usually with coal for Auckland. She had started life in England in 1878 as the barque Dunblane, an iron ship of 750 tons. As with all Tasman timber traders it was not always an easy run. In May

The Ministry of Education and Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) have teamed up to develop and introduce Vocational Pathways as part of the Youth Guarantee scheme which focuses on better career opportunities for young people and improving transition between school, the workplace and tertiary education. The Vocational Pathways are designed to provide a clearer link between what’s taught at school and how it will fit into the world of work. NCEA students will be able to identify how their school subjects relate towards a chosen vocation. We hope this will increase motivation and confidence that what they are studying is relevant to the workplace. Presently, only about 30% of school leavers go on study at Universities at degree level, so Vocational Pathways will benefit a huge number of students by helping them stay engaged in meaningful study and produce positive outcomes by helping students define a clearer pathway as they look ahead to leaving school and entering the workforce.

1908 she had caught fire while tied up to the Railway wharf in Whangarei. Then in November 1912 she went ashore timber laden at Port Phillip Heads, Melbourne, but fortunately towed off with little damage. After February 1914 when her owner, J.J. Craig Ltd, sold Joseph Craig to the Huddart Parker Line a continual turn of bad luck seemed to follow the busy sailer. “It’s only a fluke we got there at all,” said her Captain Kennedy telling of a trip to Australia in May that year. Five days out they struck a hurricane, were turned on their beam ends, lost bulwarks and davits and one yard arm was broken off. Then early one morning in June she hit a rock during a rainstorm in Rangitoto Channel, but survived.
After repairs Joseph Craig left for what turned out to be her final voyage. This time it was out of Hokianga Harbour and not Kaipara. Fully loaded with timber she was being towed over the bar on August 8th 1914 when a heavy squall hit her. The towline broke, the captain decided to try to sail off but went aground. All the crew escaped including First Mate, William Sanders, who was to win the Victoria Cross three years later while serving in the Royal Navy. Owner J.J Craig speaking of the fate of his sailing ships had told the press in Sydney, “We clung to them as long as we could but at last the shipping laws have got too hot. We had to turn these beautiful yachts — for that is really what they are — into hulks.”

Kaipara home to wild horses The Kaipara is the new home for about a dozen Kaimanawa wild horses following the latest muster of the animals which roam the North Island’s Central Plateau off the Desert Road Musters have been carried out by the conservation department since 1997 to limit the herd to about 500 horses. The animals are descendents from British cavalry mounts released as no longer needed in the mid 1800s. They have also been bred to quality stallions released by well-meaning station owners a century ago. Since 1998 more than 1400 horses have been mustered — most have found new homes but 574 have been sent to abattoirs and 55 shot on site. The Kaimanawa Wild Horse Advisory Group has now decided to reduce the herd to about 300 during the next two years. It is considered to be the minimum effective population balanced with the land available. “This year, 191 horses were mustered,” said Paparoa’s Simone Frewin, who leads re-homing efforts that are carried out by two animal welfare groups. “We managed to find homes for 119 horses — but sadly another 72 went to the abbatoir as unwanted. But 30 of these horses have come to Northland, mostly to people involved in show-jumping. Four have gone to Tangowahine, and I have seven on my

place off Paparoa-Oakleigh Road, some being cared for for other owners, and then there is one ‘spare’.” Simone originally moved to her 10-acre block in the Wairere Valley because of the need to find a place for her own horses. She is a horse ‘behaviourist’, and works with animals with problems, as well as general breaking in. She says the rescued Kaimanawa horses make wonderful pets as well as work animals, and they adapt to all sorts of disciplines such as pony clubs, horse trekking, agricultural and pastoral shows — as well as being great farm hacks. “They are also popular as mounts for riding for the disabled programmes. They are all rounders, quiet, inquisitive and intelligent.” And with her latest equine acquisitions settling in, Simone has one extra animal who may delight another local horselover. World-wide recognition Staff at the Kauri Coast Rest Home and Hospital in Dargaville who signed up to a fitness programme that kicked off last winter have been selected to feature on the front cover of the worldwide Bupa magazine “It is a great honour and something that we never thought possible for our little town and facility. We are also the first New Zealand care home to make the front cover of the magazine,” says facility manager, Heather Himiona. The staff were one of the first to take up the B-fit staff wellness programme run by Bupa, an international healthcare provider that owns the facility in Dargaville. “We have gained a huge amount of self-satisfaction through the programme. One of us has lowered their blood pressure and we have all lost weight.” “Our coordinator, Kristene Bartlett, organises all our activities including pilates, circuit training, early morning walks and running up and down sand dunes at Baylys Beach once a week. Mr Brown comes to town Auckland mayor, Len Brown, came north to the city limits — Wellsford — to turn the first sod at the site of the community’s new library project last Saturday “Following on from the ceremony at the library site, we hosted the mayor with a focus on ‘Making Wellsford a Destination’ with a history tour route of Albertland, with the president Albertland Heritage Centre, Peter Marsh,” said Wellsford District Sport and Recreation Collective co-ordinator, Julie Hawkes. “The tour encompassed some of the local heritage and history that followed the topics within the WOW Wonders of Wellsford brochure that was recently released. The stories of the local area were relayed alongside the success of the recent 150th Albertland celebrations. “Mayor Brown showed great interest in the proposal to establish an historic tour route with places of significance marked with information and photos through this area and the town. “At afternoon tea the mayor expressed his enjoyment at experiencing the stories of the area that he had not previously known. He was given mementos including a tour book and Alberlander 150th anniversary DVD.” Mr Brown returns to Wellsford on Saturday August 4, to attend a presentation for the development of a sport, recreation and health complex at Centennial Park.

Super Saturday for Kaipara rally fans Students back safe The crackle and roar of exhausts, the flying gravel and the intense action and rivalry of Brother Rally New Zealand 2012 are coming to the Kaipara on Saturday, June 23. Part of the hotly contested WRC world rally championship, Saturday’s action is part of a three day tour of some of the North Island’s gnarliest roads, from Raglan to Puhoi and Whangarei. International drivers will be up against the best Kiwis behind the wheel across 22 special stages and hundreds of kilometres of competitive driving as they race for podium honours. This year the Kaipara will provide the backdrop for a whole day of rally action, with special stages taking in the roads around Batley, Mareretu, Parahi and Maungaturoto as well as an intensely winding stage from Pikiwahine to Pukehuia. The workshop included SADD committees from Tauraroa Area School, Ruawai College and Dargaville High School. Each committee is made up of six senior students. The aim for each group was to create a manifesto to promote safe driving practices and was facilitated by SADD Regional Coordinator, Keryn Chitty along with Road Safety Coordinator, Gillian Archer. “We have identified the Kaipara as one of the high priority areas in New Zealand for youth drink driving. Our mission is to provide students with the best prevention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking as well as other drug use,” says Ms Chitty.

Nine students recently passed their license, a pass rate of 100%. The learners’ course was organised through the Te Roroa Learning Assistance programme and was run at the school over three days.

The reserve team — 19th hole The first of a planned annual ‘Stockies and Cockies’ golf tournament was played at the Mataroa Golf Club with a good turnout of rural stock agents and their farmer clients There were some enthusiastic foursomes on the course, and then their were those lending strong moral support on a day which saw a wide variety of prizes up for grabs. But hospitality was the name of the game on the day, and the winning team in the Ambrose competition were well pleased with their prize — another round of golf with green fees taken care of at a popular Northland course. One of the Mataroa Club members, Bob Trewfella, said the inaugural rural contest is set to become an annual event.
Wild boars and eels were the name of the game at Paparoa Pub’s annual gathering of hunters last weekend. Among a long list of prizes was $500 for the heaviest boar, which went to local Kevin Thompson, who received his cheque from publican Hine Waymouth as event organiser Sid Bristow looks on. A hangi and band wound up the day.

Kaipara District council temporary road closures Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, the Kaipara District Council hereby gives notice that the following roads will be temporarily closed on Wednesday 20 June 2012 for Reconnaissance Stages and Saturday 23 June 2012 at the times stated below for the holding of the 2012 World Rally Championship.
RECONNAISSANCE STAGES The two pass Reconnaissance convey will travel over the roads. Residents will be advised of the times and day by letter and there will be signs on the roads. The convey will have a lead and sweeper cars plus roving officials supervising road behaviour. The Police will be in attendance. Cars used for the Reconnaissance will have identifying numbers on both rear side windows plus the windscreen and headlights will be switched on. Residents may travel in the same direction as the reconnaissance cars during this period of closure.
