Crown Manager is reappointed u by Joanna Manson

p Reappointed Kaipara District Council Crown Manager, Peter Winder

p Kaipara District Council Deputy Mayor, Peter Wethey

p Associate Minister of Local Government, Jacqui Dean

His role will start again on June 20 to provide direction to council on a range of historic legal matters to allow councillors to focus on day-to-day work without the historic distractions arising from the illfated Mangawhai wastewater scheme and its $53 million cost blowout. Associate Local Government Minister Jacqui Dean said Mr Winder’s role was originally terminated in April because the Department of Internal Affairs found there were potential technical deficiencies in the process used to make his appointment. “I took a precautionary approach and terminated this role due to concerns about continuing his role when the process could have been challenged. There is no process for a reappointment under legislation so, once the Crown

Manager was terminated, it was necessary to undertake a new process to make the case for and appoint a new Crown Manager. “This is an extensive process and required a full cabinet decision and consultation with several government agencies,” said Ms Dean. Deputy Mayor, Peter Wethey said the decision allowed the council to move forward after the initial shock of Mr Winder’s departure. “From a council perspective we were surprised that the role had been terminated however it happened quickly and the minister said it would continue to support the council with its historic issues but didn’t outline how the continued support was going to be put in place at the time.” Mr Wethey said the reappointment “is very pleasing. It

means that there will be continuity as he had previously been a commissioner in the past and knows about the legal matters. The council believes it will be good and it means as a council we don’t have to get involved with matters that occurred long before we were in office.” Mr Winder has been appointed to the role until the 2019 local body election but the government will review the need for this appointment in June 2018. My Wethey hopes the legal issues will come to a resolution in the near future if not before Mr Winder’s review next year. Ms Dean said: “Kaipara District Council has made good progress and I see Crown support as a temporary measure. I wish to see the council use this period to strengthen its corporate and legal capacity.”

Lakes destination recognised High school excels u by Anna Harding

u by Anna Harding

Kai Iwi Lakes has been awarded the AA Recommended Traveller award for 2017.

With the 2016 NCEA results in, Otamatea High School “has punched well above its weight with a set of outstanding results,” said principal Rachel Clothier-Simmonds.

p From left: Biodiversity contractor Layne Wadsworth, campground manager Andrew Howells and assistant manager Leanne Howells

Tourism territory manager for AA travel, Wendy Ambury said: “There are 280–300 advertising partners and tourism operators that we deal will in Northland alone. To achieve this award you have to get at least a 9/10 AA rating from customers. It’s something that not everybody gets and it’s certainly trying to recognise the people that are doing a good job in terms of being the face for tourism in Northland. “We’ve got some pretty good tourist opportunities in Northland. We are really lucky in terms of the relentless effort these people put in. If we look at ourselves as a region, as a district … it really benefits from these quality providers that we have.” Kaipara District Council parks and community manager Sue Hodge said:

MOANA

“The council’s marketing approach is the use Kai Iwi Lakes as a hub. Get people to stay here and do the local attractions so the economic development is created outside of us. We create the draw card but it’s not for us to do well out of, its for the whole district to benefit from.” Assistant manager Leanne Howells said that they work hard on creating a good atmosphere for guests and remembering the little things, like returned campers birthdays and giving a bottle of champagne to couples who get engaged during their stay, for example. Campground manager Andrew Howells said that receiving the award was “great as it sums up what we’ve been try to do — people have to leave happy and go home relaxed. Which is what I think we’ve got right.” ¢

School environmental grants u by Anna Harding

Three Kaipara schools have been allocated funds for projects from beekeeping to possum fur harvesting through the Northland Regional Council’s annual Environmental Leaders Fund. Ruawai College received $1,000 for beekeeping equipment, Dargaville High School $1,500 towards a possum fur plucking machine and Tangowahine School $1,500 for a plant nursery. The fund aims to support Northland schools and their students to increase their environmental knowledge, passion and practice through projects that are hands-on and have a positive environmental impact. Councillor Rick Stolwerk, who sat on the judging panel said “it’s great to see our young people taking such

a keen interest in our environment and fantastic that as a council we’re able to help them bring some of these projects to life.” Tangowahine School Principal Wayne Steele said that their funds will go towards a new greenhouse to grow vegetable and native plant seedlings for the wider school community. “The idea of propagating plants to give to the community is part of the school’s environmental and sustainable future focus. It is also a chance for us as a school to give back to the community.

The Dargaville Anzac Theatre recently had a visit from movie makers at a showing of their film West of Eden, with an audience question and answer opportunity at the end of the screening.

p From the left is Vanessa Riddell, Taane Salter, Vern Woods, Wendy Salter, Alastair Riddell, Kieran Foster, Anna Harding and Kenn.

Composer, editor and director Alastair Riddell, producer, writer and actress Vanessa Riddell, lead actor Kieran Foster and cinematographer Dean Carruthers came from Auckland. West of Eden is set in rural New Zealand during the 1960s and tells the story of two men in love, at odds with their surroundings. The filmmakers gave the audience insight into the effort that goes on behind the scenes, from the authentic 1960s food labels to days spent filming a 15 minute scene. They also said how it was their love of storytelling, especially ones they feel are important, that drives them. Audience member Wendy Salter said the film had “great cinematography

and wonderful acting. As budding film makers it was a great opportunity to talk with the film makers and hear the challenges of a limited budget with feature film making. “It was great to hear the commitment of local filmmakers to reflect life in New Zealand and wonderful to see a movie reflecting life of gay men in 1960s in rural New Zealand — especially at the 30th anniversary of the Homosexual Law Reform Bill.” The film is playing in the cinema for another few weeks. Cinema Manager Vern Woods says that filmmaker visits is something he definitely hopes to do again, if the opportunity arises. ¢

Urban Haka winners u Dargaville Intermediate’s dance crew of nine year 7 and 8 students have taken out top spot in the first Urban Haka Dance Competition in Kaikohe last week. The criteria was an infusion of urban street dance/hip hop with Maori performing arts. The students worked hard during the past five weeks practising during lunchtimes and after school to come up with a routine which included poi and taiaha. With National Volunteer Week underway the Kaipara District Council has decided to relaunch its Citizens Awards to recognise contributions and achievements of outstanding citizens in the community.

p Recipients of the 2009 Citizens Awards

The awards were once handed out annually from 2001–2012. Nominations are sought for individuals who reside in the Kaipara district and have shown leadership, inspiration, or dedication to a cause contributing to the community, and will close on July 31. “These Awards are for anyone you think does a great job in our community,” said council community facilitator, Darlene Lang. Mayor Greg Gent said he “is very

pleased” to see the Citizen Awards reinstated and looks forward to having a more formal way to recognise all of the great work that goes on in the community again. Nomination forms are available from the KDC website kaipara.govt.nz, customers service centres and Kaipara libraries. A presentation event will be held in October 2017 to recognise the winners.  ¢

PUBLIC NOTICE - TREE REGULATIONS Trees close to powerlines can be dangerous. Falling branches can break lines, causing fire and the risk of electrocution. A person who touches a tree which is in contact with a powerline can suffer an electric shock. In high winds trees can damage powerlines and equipment, causing power failures and danger to the public. The Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 (Tree Regulations 2003) were introduced to ensure that trees are kept away from powerlines to protect the security of the electricity supply and for everyone’s safety. The risk of property damage (e.g. from fire) is also reduced. Under the Regulations, trees must be kept clear of powerlines as shown here:

Greater clearances than shown above are needed for lines with spans longer than 150 metres.

The Notice Zone extends one metre beyond the Growth Limit Zone. The Tree Regulations 2003 require that trees encroaching the Growth Limit Zone must be cut or trimmed to (at least) the outside edge of the Notice Zone. Liability and Offences Northpower and tree owners must comply with these Tree Regulations 2003 or face penalties. Northpower is required under the Tree Regulations 2003 to advise tree owners of their obligations and the penalties for NOT meeting their obligations, specifically. 1. Tree owners who receive a Cut or Trim Notice are required to ensure that the tree(s) is cut or trimmed to outside of the notice zone in the time required by the notice. 2. Tree owners must also ensure that they advise Northpower of the time and location of this work at least three (3) working days prior to work being undertaken. Penalties Apply Tree owners who fail to comply with these requirements could be fined up to $10,000 plus up to $500 a day for a continuing offence. In addition, tree owners could also be liable for costs if Northpower lines or equipment are damaged by their tree(s). Tree Work to be done by Competent Authorised Tree Workers Because cutting and trimming trees around powerlines is dangerous and potentially lethal, only electrically competent tree workers authorised by Northpower may do this work near Northpower Network Lines. Unauthorised workers – including tree and property owners together with any equipment they may be using – are not permitted to come within four metres of any live powerlines nor to cut or trim any tree which has any growth within four metres of live powerlines, without written consent (from Northpower for Northpower Lines). Tree Surveys Northpower regularly inspects their network lines as required by the regulations and notifies tree owners of any identified tree problems. In all cases it’s the tree owner who decides the future of their tree(s) i.e. if the tree(s) is trimmed or removed. In some situations this tree work is done by Northpower at their expense. Call Northpower 0800 667 847 for more information regarding any charges for tree clearance work. More Information This notice provides you with the information as required by the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003. More detailed information is available on our website www.northpower.com or by calling 0800 667 847. Northpower Limited’s Electricity lines distribution network covers the Kaipara and Whangarei Districts only.

Jaques brothers reunite

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir/Madam I note with great cynicism, that Kaipara Refuse has finally gotten its way and is to charge ratepayers $2.00 for their recycling. This fee was to be started in January, but because some local and not so local residents who take their recycling to the Dargaville Transfer Station were upset, this move was put on hold. I sent an email to the mayor Mr Greg Gent at the time requesting clarification of the ability of the contractor to arbitrarily place a fee

on recycling. I received an answer to say that ‘the council was reviewing its options’. Just wondering how many ratepayers realise that the only items of recyclable plastics that are actually recycled are clear milk bottles and ice cream containers. All other recyclable plastics dealt with by Kaipara Refuse, go directly to landfill. So much for environmental sustainability. Yours, Concerned local (Name and address supplied)

BE FIRE SAFE THIS WINTER

u by Joanna Manson

The Jaques Band made up of three brothers who have played together for 65 years came together last Sunday for an afternoon performance in front of 100 people featuring old-time tunes of rock and roll, dance and sing-along. Bill, Brian and Reg Jaques who are now all in their eighties showed age was no barrier as they took the stage at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex on Sunday. “Over 100 people turned up there was lots of dancing, singing and old friends catching up. The mystery box auction went really well and raised over $1,000,” said Kaiwaka Sports Association manager, Cheryl Anderson. All born in Kaiwaka the brothers started the band in 1950 while in their teens — Reg played the tenor banjo, Brian the piano accordion and Bill, the piano. Over the years the band increased in numbers and were in high demand often playing at dances three times a week. “We played for dances two or three nights a week in the early years all over the north between Auckland and north of Whangarei, but mostly in the local areas such as Warkworth, Wellsford, Mangawhai, Hakaru, Kaiwaka, Tomarata, Maungaturoto, Marohemo, Paparoa and Waipu,” said Brian. “Tobaccolands Hall (originally a drying shed for tobacco in Tomarata) and Hakaru were among the most memorable performances. In some cases we played for a couple’s wedding

p Brian Jaques next to his piano accordion

dance and then in later years played for their kid’s wedding.” The last performance for the Jaques Band was in July 2016 for the Whangarei Old Time Ball, an event they have played at for the last 16 years. Although they don’t entertain much together these days, Reg now plays the organ, Brian the electronic piano accordion, and Bill an electronic piano. ¢

Iconic building presents new opportunities

School reunion

u by Joanna Manson

The stand-out building in Kaiwaka’s main street nicknamed The Arc has been sold to area newcomers who have big plans for the building involving a shared community space. Heidi Clark and her husband moved to the Kaiwaka area earlier this year from Muriwai. “We took possession of the building on May 1 and set to work connecting with the community and finding out what the local needs are. We were pleasantly surprised to have some really nice conversations within Kaiwaka Care, Civil Defence, Food Bank, Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust and Neighbour Support about the facility.” The couple are currently in the process of “sprucing up” the building by painting and renovating the space which has four rooms available for use. “If people want to do hot desking that will be an option — there is a shared kitchen and there are still four rooms yet to be filled. We are hoping to attract wellness practitioners, counsellors, lawyers, accountants and other professionals that like the idea of a cooperative charitable trust and social entrepreneurs’ space. Therapy rooms, offices, workshop space and community meeting space are all available for rent on an hourly, daily or weekly basis,” she said.

p Anchal, Heidi and daughter Priya outside the new Kaiwaka community space

Heidi says the project is fulfilling a dream to give back to the community directly in a meaningful way. “It’s creating a space for other people to realise their own dreams, whether it be something like finding employment or starting their own business — it’s about achieving the highest potential. We are grateful to be in a position to help others.” An open house and blessing ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 22 from 12-4pm. ¢

p Four of the few remaining pupils from the small Kirikopuni School near Tangiteroria which closed in the 1950s: Beverly Wilson (Colmer), Colin Wilson, Rosemary Drake (Hemphill) and Mathew Singleton, were together on June 3 for the celebration of Colin’s 80th Birthday.

Planting day success

Council’s cadet scheme

u by Anna Harding

u by Anna Harding

“Otamatea HarbourCare’s recent community planting day at the Lupton farm at Marohemo was a success,” said organiser Mark Vincent.

The Kaipara District Council has recently welcomed Jazzmine Jackson and Gage Pengelly, both from Ruawai, to their offices for a 10-month cadetship.

p Otamatea HarbourCare committee members and volunteers planting trees

The cadet scheme is run in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development to help local unemployed young people get a career on track. After being referred by WINZ and formally interviewed by the council, “it felt really good to be selected because there was a time when we thought there would only be one cadet,” said Gage. “I was really happy when I got the call back from the interview, as I didn’t think I’d get it,” said Jazzmine. Human resources manager Peter Marshall said that they try and match the candidates with their career aspirations, so Jazzmine is working with the customer service team and Gage is working between the administration and IT team. “At the end there may be vacancies we have that are suitable for them. But as a minimum they will end up getting very good training and work experience which will set them up for their future career, either with us or with other organisations.” The scheme has had success with previous cadets — some within the council and some elsewhere. One of Gage’s mentors in IT also came through the scheme. “I’m finding it really exciting and enjoyable. He said.

With the help of more than 20 volunteers, the group planted over 1,500 trees. Having good weather is one of Mark’s concerns with planting, but Saturday’s weather could not have been much better for the task in hand, he said. “With the turnout we had and what we got done, it was a great way to kick off our planting season.” Kaipara District Council Mayor Greg Gent also took part. “It’s another great example of what community groups can do in Kaipara.” Mark says the planting aims are twofold. “Firstly it is to help with

reducing the amount of sediment and other nutrients which will find their way into the harbour and secondly it is to improve the habitat for the smallest bugs to the biggest birds.” The group planted along a stretch of stream, just a couple of kilometres from the Kaipara Harbour, revisiting a stretch that they had been working on last year. Farm owner Bryce Lupton said: “It is really gratifying to see the excellent survival rate from last year’s plantings, especially considering how dry the place got in early summer. We really appreciate so many people coming along to help us out.” ¢

European training to help patients A recent trip to the ACE Institute in Pesaro, Italy has paid dividends for dental patients of Lumino Dargaville as Dr Richard Liggins expands his 30 years of experience into the area of cosmetic dentistry and rehabilitation.

We’re not just about fixing teeth we’re also about transforming your smile

“We figured if you want to do your best, you have to learn from the best,” said Dr Higgins after his trip to study under the maestro of European cosmetic dentistry, Dr Mauro Fradeani in Italy. “It’s so satisfying to be able to use these advanced techniques to build up people’s worn out teeth back into a beautiful smile and by using composite materials, it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. I’ve never been hugged by so many patients.” Cost is always an issue with dentistry. “We have been working for the past four years on bringing the costs down for the people of Dargaville. They have been too high. “These days, things have changed. We supply a very high quality of care for the average Whangarei cost or less. You no longer have to travel for 50 minutes to receive advanced high-quality treatment

at a fair price. We even have sedation for anxious patients.” Dr Sergei Antipenko, who served the Dargaville community for 10 years has also been updating his knowledge and skill set. To his 24 years of experience, he has added cutting-edge techniques in minimal intervention dentistry, mini implants and a procedure called the ‘One Visit Crown’, that creates a hard wearing crown in half the time for half the cost. “He strives to provide innovative dentistry to his patients at affordable prices. As well as being proficient with wisdom teeth, he is passionate about people’s oral health and hygiene. “We pride ourselves in being of service to the Kaipara community. So if you are travelling to get the best quality and best value dentistry, why bother — it’s right here. Try us out, you won’t be disappointed.”

OBITUARY

Remembering Frank u by Joanna Manson

Frank Vilich who passed away on May 31 was a prominent figure in the Dargaville area and an accomplished piano accordionist well known for running the Frank Vilich Accordion band. Born in Australia, Frank’s music career started when he was five years old. His preferred instrument was to be the accordion and he was eventually given one for his tenth birthday. Frank decided to visit New Zealand in 1951 and joined friends heading to a dance in Dargaville. It was here that he met local lass Stephanie Sutich and soon decided to put his travel plans on hold to stay in Dargaville and marry her. He became involved with the local community and was a founding member of the Dargaville Dalmatian Club and helped with the construction of the Dalmatian Hall. Frank contributed to making Dargaville one of the accordion centres in New Zealand. At its peak, it boasted six accordion bands and has produced some of New Zealand’s best players. He soon started teaching the instrument and formed the Frank Vilich Accordion Band and often performed with the Dargaville Tamburica Orchestra and travelled across much of Northland to perform for charity functions.

Grey Power meeting

The Nashville dream u by Ann Morgan

Northland artist Shavonne’s country music is popular on Dargaville’s Big River FM, and she has been nominated for the upcoming Josie Awards for independant artists in Nashville Tennessee. Shavonne says it is thanks to local listeners and radio stations that she has been nominated in three categories: traditional country vocalist of the year, rising star and song of the year for her song titled ‘I’ll love you more and more’. “Shavonne is young and presents some of the best ‘traditional’ country music we have had from a local artist. It is great to see a Northland artist be nominated in the International awards. Our listeners enjoy her talent and we look forward to seeing where her future takes her,” says Big River FM country music presenter Phil Godfrey. “Her style is very similar to Patsy Cline and every week we receive requests for her songs.” The singer lives in Kaikohe with her parents and has been releasing her music for just two years and says being nominated for the awards is a huge honour. Another popular song is ‘All I’ve got is yours’. “I am still speechless. It is beyond words to think someone from Northland, New Zealand has been recognised across the world and my Kaipara audience has helped get me there,” says Shavonne.

p Northland Labour candidate Willow-Jean Prime spoke about her campaigning and back story at Kaipara Grey Power’s public meeting last Friday. “It’s great to engage and learn about local issues, and an opportunity to connect with an active community group who have a lot of knowledge,” she told the Lifestyler. The good turnout touched on issues such as housing, roads, youth and health care.

New intern for radio u by Anna Harding

After finishing a 20 week course at the New Zealand school of radio in Tauranga, Jules Greer from Blenheim is Big River FM’s new intern.

p Jules Greer, Big River FM’s new intern in the studio

After years travelling, deejaying and cheffing, Jules decided to switch and follow her passion for music. “I love music and I love people. I’ve spent most of my life travelling the world and going to gigs and my most valuable possessions in the world are my record collection and cd’s, “ said Jules. So after a google search of jobs in music, she came across the idea of radio and signed up to the Tauranga course. The course taught her about all aspects of radio. “I thought something would jump out, but I’ve actually enjoyed every part of it,” she said. Eventually Jules would love to work for a record label and manage bands.

She sees this opportunity as a good stepping stone. “Everyone that’s come through and done this internship is now working in the industry,” she said. The internship is six months maximum. “Anaru helps to find out your strengths and weaknesses and helps us get into full-time employment, so we are free to go as soon as full-time work is found.” Jules is also looking forward to spending time in the Kaipara. “I got here on Sunday, June 11 and I‘ve been out meeting people and seeing what’s going on. I love it, everyone’s so friendly.” ¢

His and hers renovation goals u by Andy Bryenton

Your dream home is likely very different from your neighbours — or your parents, or your siblings. So why is it so surprising that even between a devoted couple, the idea of transforming bricks and timber into a home can cause more than a little friction? Gone are the days — thank goodness — when even discussing the look and feel of the family home was a no-no and ‘father knew best’. Gone, too, is the assumption that the modern man has the stylistic and aesthetic sense of the average fence post. Today renovations and interior design is a team sport, but a recent US survey shows that we’re still pushing for different priorities. Here’s where the sexes agree — a big bedroom with plenty of space is a must. A living space with room to entertain,

spilling out onto a patio or deck will cause no arguments. But then the data takes a twist. Men — perhaps inspired by top TV chefs — are the ones who strongly insist on a thoroughly modern kitchen. Ladies opt for ample storage space next on the list. Then opinions converge again for point number four — a his and hers bathroom with twin sinks. Anyone who has woken up too early and grabbed the wrong shaving kit will appreciate this innovation. At the extreme end of the spectrum, it seems

that women are thinking practically while the guys are all about social occasions. Female correspondents wished for an ample garden space for a kitchen garden, indulging the modern trend for organic and home grown food and herbs. They’d also prefer a separate hobby and craft room, study or office space. Men, predictably, voted for a big garage and workshop, games room or man cave, and a BBQ area — places focussed on friends and bonding.

Of course, any home renovation is a compromise. It’s not a shock to find that an in-home bowling alley may not be your wife’s favourite idea, but it is a cue to start a conversation. After all, it’s not just changing rooms — things like style, colour, flooring, curtains and furniture will all shape your day to day world for years to come. Interior designers — and psychologists — advise compromising on the little things to build a harmonious big picture. ¢

BLUEPRINT TO HANDOVER

Renovations boom time is now u by Andy Bryenton

With real estate in the Kaipara in hot demand, and no sign of a seasonal slowdown in sales for properties around the harbour and on both coasts, a second boom is hiding in the shadow of the first. It’s one which provides opportunities but also offers challenges to the industries which exist to make new properties into dream homes. Because one of the key factors driving the popularity of regional real estate is the comparative affordability of Kaipara housing compared to Auckland or other main centres, many of those relocating after selling cosmopolitan properties have extra money on hand for renovations and decor changes. At the same time, the previous decades have seen less turnover in complete rebuilds and tear-downs locally. Many

of the homes for sale date from the turn of the 20th century or from the pre-war years of the 1920s and 30s. This means that amenities may not be the most modern, and that certain standards of thermal insulation and construction have been superseded by better techniques. Open fireplaces, roof cavities without tar paper or batts, board-and-sarking walls, elderly hot water heating and reticulation

systems — all these sit behind the obvious issues of personal taste which will cause many new home buyers to completely transform the flooring, wallpaper, colour scheme or even room layout of their investment. Consequently, from the practical building trades — engaged to add on decking, garages and en suites, or even to knock out walls for open plan living — through to the gurus of colour and texture, curtains and tapware, there is a certain amount of strain being placed on the over-arching renovations trade. For many, this has been a time to hire new staff, take on apprentices and expand the range of services on

offer. But as winter passes into spring and people once again use the good weather to begin transforming their homes, it’s worth knowing that it pays to plan ahead. Getting a reliable quote and drawing up plans now — along with talking to your local tradespeople — is the best way to ensure your project is booked in and can begin on time. Certain aspects — such as fireplace installation — have a necessary wait for council permission, while others may require parts to come from far afield. In the end, a serious plan on paper means everybody is on the same page, and there’s no stress or hurry when the work begins. ¢

BLUEPRINT TO HANDOVER

Smart technologies to keep the heat u by Andy Bryenton

Home heating and water heating take up a sizeable part of the average home’s energy bill, with hot water alone accounting for up to a third of the price we pay for comfort in our homes. But you don’t need to be undertaking a new build to increase the energy efficiency of your home. What’s required is a tailor-made solution. Insulation comes first. For homes with a ceiling cavity, this means tar paper under the roof and a thick layer of batts, either traditional material or modern blends of ecologically sustainable components. Trap the heat top and bottom with underfloor insulation for houses raised above the ground, and complete the thermal shielding with appropriate window coverings. It’s amazing how much heat can be radiated away by glass. Then it’s time to consider an integrated heating plan. Many local homes have a fireplace, but this can range from the modern and efficient through to the thoroughly antique. A modern insert can revitalise an old fire hearth, or it’s possible to leave wood burning behind in favour of flued gas. Wood fires can be easily fitted with a ‘wet back’ water heating attachment if they are close enough to the home’s central hot water cylinder, but all kinds of fireplace can benefit from the addition of heat transfer — a system which diverts excess heat trapped near the ceiling and uses it to take the chill off

other rooms of the house. The general rule is that rooms up to six metres away can expect a cozy temperature boost, with up to three bedrooms warmed by a single fireplace. Heat pumps, too, continue to improve in efficiency and quality. Many are now so quiet and unobtrusive that a thermostat is needed to ensure they are switched off when they are not needed. Of course the benefit here is not just in savings over electricity and gas in conventional heaters, but also in summer cooling. Technology has improved to the point where those with first-generation heat pumps may wish to consider a replacement with more power for less energy cost. Similar technology also exists to power refrigerators and hot water cylinders. A combination of these technologies — plus positive pressure ventilation in homes prone to condensation and equipped with a suitable roof cavity — will ensure less power consumption and more ‘bang for your buck’ when it’s time to store away firewood for the winter season. Even older homes can be converted the smart way — talk to your local appliance and electrical, gasfitting and fireplace experts for more ideas. ¢

Welcome to Wellsford Giving winter warmth

Warriors way

u by Anna Harding

The Wellsford area now has a Give a Kid a Blanket drop-off point to gather warmth for disadvantaged families.

p Donna Turtle Sarten busy sorting and making up orders of donated blankets and other warmers, ready for distribution to children and their families living in cold and damp conditions

The initiative was conceived and led by artists Donna Turtle Sarten and Bernie Harfleet, who with help from the community collect blankets and deliver them and other warm items to children through public health nurses, social and family support workers. The project is in it’s third winter and has collected over 4,000 blankets previously. “With what seems to be an even harder winter coming for many kids, with families in New Zealand facing the winter cold in cars, garages, sleepouts and damp cold housing, we hope to be

able to help more families keep warm this winter,” they say. As part of this year’s project, a photographic exhibition of images taken over the last two years will be exhibited at the HUM Salon in Grafton, Auckland as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography. The collection finishes on Sunday, July 23, with 50 drop off points already in place. Go to the Give a Kid a Blanket facebook page for information about the drop off point. ¢

Ford’s field day firsts u by Andy Bryenton

At an event famed for showcasing the best tools for the agricultural trade, it would normally be a safe bet that Ford’s perennially popular Ranger ute should take pride of place on their stand. And while there was certainly plenty of buzz around the Ranger, continuing its run of dominance in the Kiwi light commercial market, it was a pair of Mondeos which proved the surprise of the show. The mid-sized Ford sedan has been shown in two new forms at Mystery Creek, with each one taking a different direction. The ST Line Mondeo is a long, low station wagon with 19 inch alloys, aggressively aerodynamic lines,

and a powerful twin turbo 2 litre diesel under the hood that’s good for over 200hp. This is a definite step away from the image of the Mondeo as a responsible, businesslike fleet car and into the territory of European rivals

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

20

MInD YOuR SPeeD AROunD SCHOOL BuSeS

p ST-Line Mondeo hypes up the image of Ford’s mid-sized cruiser — there’s also a hybrid option for Mondeo drivers in 2017

such as BMW — and it’s also proof that the long-distance cruising wagon is not a thing of the past in this age of the SUV. It’s the other Mondeo on show which has generated the most gossip however — a fully fledged hybrid packing in a 35 kilowatt electric motor alongside a petrol engine. It’s a setup seen before in the likes of Toyota’s Prius, and Porsche’s 918 Spyder — but the hybrid drive Modeo sits firmly between these poles of technology and performance. Attractive features of course, include the fact that this is a less ostentatious way to announce that you’re saving the planet while saving petrol, and that despite a sliver of boot space being sacrificed to batteries this

is still a full sized Mondeo. That fuel consumption figure, razed down to a frugal 2.7 litres per 100 kilometres, is sure to impress corporate fleet managers who already like the petrol powered Mondeo for its combination of reliability and affordability. It’s going to be an order-only option here in New Zealand when it arrives in the late stages of 2017, but with a price not so high above the Prius, this might be another front Ford are opening up on their big rival. In the meantime, steady sales of the custom Ranger in all its forms will keep the Blue Oval bosses happy throughout the post Field Days season. ¢

AUTO AND MARINE

A century behind the wheel u by Andy Bryenton

In 1917 the automobile was still a novel sight in New Zealand — a growing trend replacing the trusty horse, but nevertheless a futuristic machine. New cars came with complimentary driving lessons, and the state of the art was still defined by spoked wheels and hand-cranked starters. One would have to have been a visionary indeed to foresee a time when every household had a car in the driveway, and when road transport stood behind a vast swathe of the economy. But two such people existed — Mr J Bett and Mr E Wackrill of Fielding. They convened a small ‘town hall’ meeting of early motor trade professionals in the local library, attracting fifteen contributors. From here the discussion went national, with a meeting just a month later in Palmerston North drawing a crowd of 52 early auto importers, repairers, servicemen and garage owners. Their intent was unanimous — a national organisation should be formed to ensure best practice, foster talent, engage with the public and the government, and make motoring in New Zealand an all round better experience. Today the MTA — the Motor Trade Association — boasts a roll of over 4,000 members, spanning the nation. Their advocacy and oversight role means they are often called upon to weigh in on debates at a governmental level, while still speaking up for the

Kiwi motorist. MTA apprenticeship programmes seek to grow the skills and confidence of a new generation of auto mechanics and technicians for the future. The ubiquitous MTA gift card has become New Zealand’s most long established stocking filler and birthday card addition. On all levels, the modern association continues to uphold the spirit of its hundred-year-old charter, ensuring a better experience from buying a car through to keeping it safe and reliable. Massive celebrations this year have seen events unfold, such as a display of classic and rare automobilia in Wellington, and the publication of a book charting the rise of the automobile alongside the MTA itself. A special group of scholarships are being awarded to ensure even more talented young people can enter the trade. Now, in its 100th year, the local members of this long-established professional fraternity are more proud than ever to display the blue badge of their association — a guarantee of integrity for the future. ¢

p When the MTA was formed, this was the state of the art. Technology has changed, but their values remain the same

Auto trade a route to success u by Andy Bryenton

The centennial of the Motor Trade Association comes with a reminder of just how much times have changed in the automotive industry. From those first days when mechanical engineers may have cut their teeth on steam power and moved on to internal combustion, training has played a key role in keeping the Kiwi road fleet rolling. Indeed, without a dedicated network of people who understood what was happening under the bonnet — in a time when the petrol engine appeared to be almost magical in its complexity — we may very well have stuck with steam or gone right on to electric cars. Today, the automotive trade is busier

than ever, with many varied specialist facets to grow a thriving career. It’s also a trade which comes with a high possibility for self advancement. There are few other fields of work which have such a clear path to owning your own business through applied skill. That’s borne out locally when you consider the number of auto professionals who have come up through apprenticeships to become their own boss. And it’s not just mechanics and technicians — Advance Auto Services in Dargaville is an example of an auto electrician striking out on his own to make a difference. Numerous auto businesses in the region, such as Dargaville Ford and

Morfett Autos are raising the bar with new skills handed down to those learning the trade. And there’s even more specialised training going on with your local auto painters, panelbeaters and motorcycle specialists. As the second intake for polytechnic institutes and other tertiary bodies approaches, it’s well worth considering the multiple ways in which a practical young person can enter this industry. Change is certainly on the horizon with the rise of hybrid and electric vehicles, self-driving cars and more. But no matter what powers or commands a machine on the road, one thing is for sure — it will need human hands to maintain and repair it. ¢

Kauri photo awards launched u by Paul Campbell

A Northland only, online photography competition has been launched by The Kauri Museum at Matakohe to raise awareness of the kauri dieback disease which is attacking the remaining stands of the trees.

p Northern Wairoa players in the Whangarei premiere grade. From left is Jenni Nesbit, Tiana Langdon, Sade Langdon, Holli O’Sullivan, Bailey O’Sullivan, Trina Henare and Lilli Nesbit

For junior players, a performance centre is held weekly in Ruawai. Instructor Colleen Glass helps them develop basic skills with specialised coaching for shooting, attack, and defence. There is a club leadership programme which includes teaching in coaching, umpiring, community engagement, player development and administration. A Northern Wairoa Club team will compete in the Kerikeri representative

tournament, with the first game this Sunday and will then go onto play in Whangarei, the Hibiscus Coast and Rodney. A number of the club’s premier grade players have taken the opportunity to further broaden their experience and exposure by playing for the Whangareibased Fideliter Netball Club. In last Friday’s game Fideliter two were promoted to the premier grade after a win against Wahine Toa 41-23. ¢

The museum houses more than 1,200 images bequeathed by early photographer, Tudor Washington Collins, many of which are on display throughout the museum and in a new special exhibition, titled Man of Many Faces. “Tudor is perhaps best remembered for his work as the ‘kauri cameraman’ capturing the glory and grandeur of standing kauri while also documenting the loss of the forests through the timber and gum industries,” said museum CEO, Lisa Tolich. “With only 4% of our ancient forests remaining, and those now facing the threat of kauri dieback disease, this photo competition is part of our ongoing support of the programme to ‘Keep Kauri Standing’ and stop the spread of this deadly disease. We have chosen the theme of All Things Kauri to highlight the importance and diversity of kauri through the modern camera lens.”

The competition has three categories, Primary School Student, Secondary School Student and Open and the closing date for photos to be uploaded is July 10. “As long as the entry is based on a photographic image, the work can take any form. The judges will choose from entries uploaded to the website and four entries from each category will be shortlisted to go forward to the finals. The finalists will have their work hung at The Kauri Museum, with winners announced at a special awards presentation in August.” A Tudor Collins People’s Choice Award will be running throughout, with voting online. Entry forms and rules can be found on The Kauri Museum’s website at awards.kau.nz. Entries are restricted to residents in the Northland region only — the area covered by the Kaipara, Whangarei and Far North district councils. ¢

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A debilitatand other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitat ing condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take

Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring

microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition. * Results May Vary Before*
