The building, situated on Molesworth Drive between the activity zone and the bowling club, is almost complete with just a few final touches to be put in place. Station manager Kay Carey says “We won’t know ourselves, the new premises will make a huge difference to the volunteers.” The double bay station will require furnishing and is equipped with a

kitchenette, two bedrooms, a bathroom including a disabled toilet, a training room which can be hired out and used for community events, an office and a staff library. “The majority of the funds have come from the Mangawhai St John op shop. Without the volunteers time it would have taken much longer to get to where we are now.”

The official opening is yet to be confirmed but it is hoped to be fully set up later this year. “We want to move in quietly at first just to iron out any teething issues, but we will be holding training nights at the station from now on, so people will see some activity,” she said. continued on page 4 …

Spirit of Matariki brings crowds  by Ayla Miller

On the longest night of the year, the Dargaville community came together to celebrate Matariki with friends, food and fire at Selwyn Park.

Outstanding contributions to the community have been acknowledged and celebrated with three Kaipara residents receiving inaugural Maungaturoto and District Rotary Excellence in the Community Awards at a ceremony last week.

 Circus Kumarani’s Spirit of Matariki festival was deemed a success with a large crowd gathering to watch the evenings fire show photo courtsey Chris Hoult

After months of planning, Circus Kumarani managing director Jenny Huriwai said she was pleased with the support from the community. “It was amazing. The weather was great, which contributed to lots of people coming out. “There were lots of stall holders and a nice variety of food.” Stalls displayed a variety of goods including knitted blankets, flax baskets, second hand books, home made sweets as well as a hangi cooked by the crew at Big River FM. Children were given the opportunity to express their creativity

with chalk on the pavement and an open stage kept the crowds entertained during the afternoon with African drumming, local singer/songwriter Olly Knox and many others. The night concluded with a fire performance by Circus Kumarani which told the legend of Maui and Mahuika, the fire goddess. “Circus Kumarani has always been a community minded organisation and this was good opportunity to show that. “Big respect to all the performers and to everyone that contributed to making the event a success,” Jenny said. 

Terri Donaldson from Maungaturoto was recognised for contributions including organising the monthly Maungaturoto Markets, organising the Christmas parade, being president of the local residents association and volunteering for many organisations including The Kauri Museum and the Maungaturoto Opportunity Shop as well as coaching the Otamatea High School Girls’ rugby team. Robyn Bruce, a teacher at Otamatea High School was awarded for an outstanding contribution to the youth of the area through Duke of Edinburgh Award programmes. The citation read that over her time Robyn has put through in excess of 30 Gold Awards and currently has some 60 young people involved in bronze, silver and gold programmes. Robyn has also been coaching hockey since 2001. Joanna Roberts was recognised for service including as a Kaipara councillor, a past chair of Mangawhai library, and chair of the local school committee among other contributions. Joanna opened her

garden for the Plunket Garden Rambles and guided people on the Mangawhai Walking Weekend, helped at the St John’s Op Shop and supported the Mangawhai Historical Society. She helped found Mangawhai Probus and was founding president. The Rotar y awards will be made annually. 

Due to the success of the musical production Material Girls in 2012, a sequel is on the cards with auditions to be held at the Dargaville Little Theatre on Sunday, June 28. Material Girls:Together Again is set 15 years after the first play and concentrates on the endeavours of the characters children. “Quite a few people suggested I write a sequel set in the 90’s as this was the era I grew up in. It was quite fun remembering all the things we used to do,” said writer Deborah Steele. “There are elements that are based on personal experience but it is mostly all fictional.” Originally from Dargaville, the music teacher and new mother returned to her roots when she got married and has written and performed a  The material girls get ready backstage number of productions previously. “I’ve written the play to be quite a for a chorus ranging from children large production and there are a lot of to adults. characters. Tartan show ‘bigger than ever’ They protected our quotas The Art’N Tartan Wearable Art show is set to entertain audiences in the new Celtic Barn in Waipu with three shows on July 17 and 18 including a matinee.

 by Ann Morgan

A group of retired fisheries officers gather annually at Ripiro beach to catch up, look at old photo’s and tell stories — some true and some not so true — of years gone by.

“This year’s Art’N Tartan Wearable Art show will be bigger and better than ever. With a larger number of entries and a support crew who dance, sing, play bagpipes and beat drums, alongside juggling acts and circus clowns it promises to be the best yet,” said publicity and promotions manager Pat Hadlee. There are 40 entrants each with a unique piece of artwork and the show will include performances by the award winning Hatea Kapa Haka group. “The night is a moving mix of Maori and Celtic culture — tradition and fantasy. Director Helen Frances is making full use of the large stage and high roof line. Lighting and music have always been one of the hallmarks of this production and this year will be no different.” Not only is the venue bigger, so is the prize money.  A 2014 Art’N Tartan entry ‘Ghost’ created by Sue Welford Audience members will have the chance male and female model. Tickets are to vote for their favourite contestant in on sale now from the Waipu Museum, the people’s choice award and best online and from eventfinder. 

 The retired fisheries officers say they were lucky to have experienced the variety of roles they played, and they would all go back in time and do it again.

They worked from Kaitaia to the Bluff including the Chatham Islands between 1967-89 and say it was the best job ever. Fraser MacLean, Richard Williams, Duncan Chisholm, Ian Walker, Billy Goodwin, Kenneth Ford and Don Young recall the training was literally here is a vehicle, a book of regulations, a warrant and at times a small boat, ‘away you go’. They recall catching poachers with 16,000 pipi, 800 toheroa, 1,300

crayfish, and 23 sacks of mussel, to name a few. “We believed what we were doing was right, we were protecting our resources from being over harvested,” said Mr Goodwin. “When toheroa season was open, people would make a run for it and drive into the ocean or get stuck in the sand, and get caught anyway.” Over time the job took on a more administrative role and — one by one — they departed the industry. 

Museum celebrates with community day  by Ayla Miller

On June 29 1985, the community gathered to witness Governor General Sir David Beattie open the Dargaville Museum at Harding Park. Thirty years later, and with several additional buildings, the museum will join with the community once again, this time celebrating its success on Sunday, July 5 from 10am–4pm. Over the years the museum has taken on many forms, working its way up from stables in 1961 to the current premises, which now include the Lighthouse Function Centre, Pioneer, Maritime, and Gum Digger Exhibition Halls and the restored Aratapu Library. Noel Hilliam played a big part in spearheading the museum’s development and has spent more than 14,000 voluntary hours on the project over 12 years. “I’m proud of the whole complex,” he says.

“I’m particularly proud of the maritime side of the museum because no other museum has anything like we have.” Harding Park is also the home of the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club and treasurer Ann Lupton says they congratulate the Dargaville Museum on their achievements over the years. “Working together, the Kaipara Vintage Machinery club and the Dargaville Museum have a large range of artifacts, thereby helping to preserve some of the history that molded our district,” she said. Entry is free to the museum on the day, and there will be a variety of activities to keep visitors entertained. Activities will imitate the daily tasks of the early settlers in the area, and the public are encouraged to try their hand at gum scraping, crafts, bread making and to take part in old fashioned games. There will also be a crazy hat competition, a quiz, a raffle, live music, hot food and an old favourite, billy tea. 

Mangawhai garden project

Wellsford RSA update

 by Ann Morgan

 by Ann Morgan

The Mangawhai community garden has transformed into providing food for the sick and the elderly in the area.

The Wellsford RSA ‘Les Jenkins Extension’ project is virtually complete. The finishing of the decks and final touches are to be added and the paperwork completed. The official opening is July 11.

 Joining together weekly, volunteers grow fresh vegetables, ensuring the sick and elderly are provided for

“Many of the older generation do the work now and it has been growing for more than seven years. “The idea started from a childrens Christmas party, when it was discovered some mothers didn’t know how they were going to feed their family over Christmas,” said coordinator Joan Farrell. “It was crazy to us that things were that bad for people, so we started a shared garden. The volunteers have put in a lot of hard work toward the

success of it.” A fun group of dedicated workers gather on Friday’s from around 9-11am and morning tea is provided. The vegetables are shared amongst helpers and those in need. “It is a great time to get to know others while doing good for the community. The work is paying off but we could still use more helpers.” Anyone is welcome to join the group, and no gardening experience is necessary. For more information phone Joan or Ted on 09 431 5924. 

“We are down to the nitty gritty,” said manager Terry Blakemore. “It is with thanks to the legacy of brothers Ted and Burt Fisher who were local farmers that donated a portion of their estate to the RSA. They left a fantastic legacy, and it is because of their generosity this was able to be achieved. “Nice decks, exit ramps, and 130 square metres of building have been added. “There is now a very large area to be utilised. We hired local contractors who have done a magnificent job, they have been tremendous to work with.” There was also other fundraising efforts and help from volunteers with painting and odd jobs that added to

the accomplishment. “We would like to say a big thank you to the contractors and volunteers that helped and to the members who were very patient while work was in progress. “We all love it, and the members have really taken ownership of the place. Using local contractors has been a big positive, it is for their community. We look forward to the club being utilised as a community place to gather and hold functions, and we always encourage new memberships.” Les Jenkins who the extension is named after is 90-years-old and helped to build the original RSA building. The committee decided it was fitting to name it after their founding member. 

“The store attracts clients from Northland and as far south as Auckland, due to the choices available and affordability of the range. “In tough times people still like to be able to treat themselves to something new and my prices allow for that,” says Jo. ”I personally pick what my store stocks. Most shoe stores now are a chain so different choices are not always available. Our products are quality and not just black, there is a vast variety of colour, and the mens and childrens shoe range has grown.“

Vision for Mangawhai architecture  by Ann Morgan

Mangawhai Art and Culture Forum are hosting an evening with award winning architect David Wingate at the Mangawhai village library hall on Tuesday, June 30 from 7 – 9 pm. “Architecture may be described as ‘social art’ or ‘artful science’, occupied with planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience. Like art, architecture is a passion, a vocation, a calling and requires creative minds,” says organiser Suza Lawrence. “Good architecture not only supports all types of human activity, offering us shelter and comfort, health and wellbeing, providing us with a sense of place and belonging, it also enriches us aesthetically and sometimes even spiritually.” “Hear how David became an architect, and what drives and influences him. Learn a little history of New Zealand architecture and who some of our influential contemporary architects are. Discover some projects and David’s amazing vision and design ideas for Mangawhai.” The cost is $6 with BYO drinks and nibbles to share. 

AUTO AND MARINE

Two heads are better than one  by Andy Bryenton

Versatility is the best feature a power tool can have. Whether it’s that neat attachment to turn your power drill into a bolt wrench, or the snap-on heads which make your compressor a garage powerhouse, it’s a good feeling to know that your investment kills two (or more) birds with one proverbial stone. That’s why the mid range Husqvarna 135R brushcutter and trimmer fits into such a sweet spot on the Scandinavian company’s power table. Not as beefy as

the big, saw-bladed brushcutters which can gobble up bamboo and small trees, but heftier and torquier than a standard line-trimmer, this is a package which combines the best of both worlds. So why harness up to this 1.9 horsepower garden-tamer? Simply put, it’s light and powerful, making it easy to transition from sculpting edges after you mow, through to cutting back invasive scrubby growth. Husqvarna’s

QUAD BIKE SAFETY Concentrate on the riding. Look where you’re going, not where the stock are going.

suite of factory features, such as their Smart Start system and a willing X Torq motor, are a great backbone. Solid construction, from ergonomic grips down to a heavy-duty bevel gear at the business end, mean that this machine will last the course. And then comes the piece de resistance, because it’s easy to switch out the 135R’s line trimming head for a steel blade. With this attachment, fully covered by a custom designed guard, you can snip through stems as thick as a burly man’s thumb, knocking back blackberry, early-growth gorse, long whippy grass and more. A double act, using the steel to hack back invasive growth and the line trimmer to create the finishing touches. You can keep this up for a good while, too, as the whole machine weighs less

than seven kilos, light on the harness and easy to handle in a tight spot. It’s likely too much of a machine for the ‘handkerchief’ back yards of modern Auckland. But out here in the countryside, it spans the gap between a garden sculpting tool and a lifestyle block owner’s best friend. The price is nice too, at just a snip over seven hundred dollars recommended retail. Of course, those looking to break in new ground or clear serious gorse will want to look higher up Husqvarna’s power chart — perhaps to the commercial grade 345FR, able to lop off small tree trunks. For the size, weight and price, those with small acreage will find the 135R a great, multi-purpose tool in the war on overgrowth, and a worthy addition to the shed. 

AUTO AND MARINE

Over six decades of innovation  by Andy Bryenton

With a strong showing and massive interest at the recent National Fieldays in the Waikato, Lely’s range of agricultural machines are in the spotlight for Kiwi farmers seeking a sound investment. It’s been a long road from the brand’s humble origins in post-war Holland to pride of place at 2015’s biggest rural expo. What began as the brainchild of brothers Cornelius and Arij van der Lely, sketched out in meccano in their parents’ living room, has become a global giant in the world of agriculture, with a number of ‘firsts’ in the field. The inventors of the finger-wheel rake (patented in the late 40s) have never been a company to rest on their laurels, and 13 years ago they became the first and only factory-owned importer of grassland machinery in New Zealand. This has allowed the Lely name to become a common one in machinery sheds the nation over. The company’s philosophy is all about results, meaning better production from cattle and a healthier herd. From mowers, tedders and rakes to advanced balers and loader

wagons, the Lely system is designed to produce top-notch feed with the minimum of fuss. Products like the Lely Welger Tornado baler-wrapper combo sum this up nicely, but there’s another area in which Lely are leading the world. In 2008 the first Lely astronaut series milking robots were installed in Canterbury and Southland, with the more advanced A4 series enjoying huge popularity in the present day. Robotics may very well be the future for dairying, and this Dutch company are far in advance of those traditional robotics early-adopters Japan in this specialisation! It’s been an ever-evolving journey from the van der Lely brothers’ farmstead to the present day. But the company which bears their name vows to continue to push the envelope as they head toward 2048 and 100 years in business. 

“And now she kicks the blankets off at night...” Cosy Nights: Bridgitte and Jill with granddaughter Bailey, who can’t believe the difference Healthy Homes insulation has made.

Before the house was insulated, Bridgitte and baby Bailey always had to put extra blankets on their beds to stay warm through the night. Whenever Bridgitte became sick with the flu she’d often need to take a trip to the doctor for an inhaler. Bridgitte and her mother Jill applied for a Healthy Homes Warm Up NZ subsidy and within weeks their home was insulated. “The whole house feels warm, as soon as you walk in the door” says Jill. “Now it feels like a proper home.” See facebook or our website for the full story and to find out more about how you can have subsidised insulation.
