p The skies above Dargaville’s Memorial Park glowed in the dark earlier this month as Circus Kumarani put on a fire show to mark Matariki, the Maori New Year. Young and old came along to enjoy a spectacular light show in superb conditions. Even the counter-attraction of an All Blacks test on TV failed to keep away the crowds who left in awe at the artistry and professionalism of the Kumarani team of fire artists, acrobats and support crew who put the event together. The accomplished athlete’s combined lift of 375kg included a 130kg squat, 90kg bench press and 155kg deadlift in the 74 kg open class and this latest win comes after a succession of similar feats over the last eight years. What makes Ming Ming’s achievements even
more impressive, is that he is blind and, abandoned at birth, he lived in a Chinese orphanage for his first seven years before being adopted by his New Zealand mother, Gaynor. “He improves every year and he is very committed,” said Gaynor.
“He keeps training and doesn’t give up.” Now 24, Ming Ming started going to the gym when he was 16 and was soon lifting weights. “He started competing almost from the onset and he’s always been successful in his classes.” continued on page 5 …

p Scores of tall stories were told earlier this month as drivers and other workers from Dargaville’s Northern Wairoa Co-operative Dairy Company factory came together for a reunion. The factory on River Road opened in 1902 and closed in 1998. There were 116 registrations for the reunion, with the oldest workers starting in the late 1950s. Merv Hilliam, who worked as a driver in the 1960s, says in his day roads were pretty bad and some of the old tankers were difficult to control. But there were no fatalities and there was a great team spirit among the drivers and workers. Participants at the reunion came from around Northland to meet up at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club. Maungaturoto movie makes the big screen

u by Colin Patterson
Although there won’t be any red carpet and there’ll be a lot less glamour than The Lord of the Rings, film-maker Dave Perrett will still be excited when his latest creation has its premiere in Maungaturoto early next month. His movie marking 150 years of Maungaturoto has been an 18-month labour of love. “I’m pretty happy with the result. It’s a celebration of the town, its accomplishments and its people,” says Mr Perrett. “They get things done. “I wanted to make a film that the people of the town would feel proud of. They’ve had to cope with changes like the consolidation of councils and businesses. Farms are getting bigger. The Post Office closed. It’s now the medical centre.” The area has also had to deal with depopulation, as young people move to Whangarei and Auckland for work or study. But Mr Perrot
says Maungaturoto still has a positive story to tell. “I think it’s wonderful and inspiring stuff. It’s the spirit of the whole area. It’s a celebration of what rural communities go through.” As he prepares his final cut, Mr Perrett has shown parts of the movie to locals and to audiences in Auckland, getting very favourable reactions. “Auckland folk are amazed at the amount of volunteering that goes on in a rural area.” The movie will screen at 7pm on Saturday July 5 in the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, at the Country Club on Bickerstaffe Road. DVD versions of the movie will be on sale. ¢

The possibility of recovering some of the costs from third parties should also be considered.” Mr Robertson says the commissioners will consider Justice Heath’s comments when they decide on the level of rates. They are also receiving advice on the feasibility of taking action against third parties. Mr Robertson says decisions on that are unlikely before the end of August. Mr Robertson also confirmed commissioners have reached agreement with the Office of the Auditor-General to wind back the clock, so preventing the implementation of a six-year statute of limitations that would otherwise stop the commissioners suing to recover losses. However, the agreement does not cover decisions and actions where the six-year deadline has already expired — including the signing of the initial EcoCare contract in 2005 and a variation in 2006 that increased its cost from $35 million to $57 million. When High Court Justice Paul Heath issued his judgement at the end of the May he ordered lawyers for both parties to convene a teleconference on or soon after June 20 to discuss the wording of declarations and issues surrounding costs. However, Justice Heath has been busy presiding over the trial of former directors of South Canterbury Finance, while lawyers also have busy schedules. Both Kaipara District Council chief commissioner John Robertson and Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association chairman Bruce Rogan say a date for the teleconference has yet to be set. Despite the delay, Mr Robertson says the council will continue with its process to adopt its Annual Plan and set rates for the 2014/25 financial year. Decisions on these matters are expected at Friday’s council meeting. In his judgement Justice Heath urged the council to look at other ways — apart from rates — of paying off the costs of the scheme. “That includes evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of negotiating with existing creditors to

Have you ever woken up from a night of drinking and wish you hadn’t? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Problem drinking can damage your life in many ways - the people of Alcoholics Anonymous know, they’ve been there. They come from every area of life, and are of many different ages. They have suffered the quiet desperation of not being able to stop drinking even though they wanted to. Car accidents, driving under the influence charges, job losses and other humiliations were common to many of them. For others it was a gradual isolation and withdrawal from life. Some of them managed to hold on to their jobs and battled on miserably, hungover and suffering. However, since finding in AA a solution to their problem, members are living full and productive lives. Alcoholics Anonymous has provided them with a way of living that has enabled them to move on from the destructive way they were living into a life that is worthwhile, by providing them with a few simple guidelines that directly address their drinking and the consequences that are the result of active alcoholism.
The members have, by helping each other, been able to help themselves instead of hurting themselves and those around them. Alcoholics Anonymous is not some sort of secret society, nor is it affiliated with any organisation, political or religious group. There are no rules as such, but rather suggestions for recovery and a programme put together by those who have suffered. Members say they don’t have any agenda other than staying sober themselves and sharing their message of recovery with others who are suffering through their drinking as they once were. There are no fees for AA membership, no compulsory attendance demands or anything of that nature. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.
If your drinking is causing you grief, or negatively impacting your life and the lives of those around you, but you can’t stop, there is somewhere you can go for help if you need it.

DIY sculpture class u by Joanne Speechly
Mangawhai Artists Inc is running a soft stone sculpture workshop in Kaiwaka next month. The all day workshop will see students working with supertufa cement to produce two medium indoor or outdoor sculptures. The light mixture of cement, sand and vermiculite takes seven hours to dry, by which time it’s set hard, so the carving process takes place during the curing time. “The cement is soft enough for carving, using traditional pottery tools, for only several hours. It is messy, so people will need old clothes, masks, rubber gloves and rags,” says Mangawhai Artists Inc president, Jeanette Vickers. “Anyone can come along — no experience necessary — and I’ll be giving it a go myself for the first time. Better facilities planned for Field Days u by Colin Patterson
People attending the 2015 Northland Field Days should have a safer and less congested journey to the event site.
The event on it’s property off Awakino Point East Rd has in the past lead to queuing spilling onto the road and interrupting. Currently, the queue of patrons often spills onto the road, interrupting vehicle flow into and out of the car park and creating safety concerns. So, Northland Field Days Inc asked Kaipara District Council to pipe an open drain on the side of the road to create more space for pedestrians. Last month council commissioners decided to contribute up to $14,000 for the project, subject to the remainder of the cost coming from the New Zealand

Transport Agency’s minor safety improvements programme. That decision still has to be confirmed by commissioners when they adopt the Annual Plan for 2015/16 later this month. However, Field Days president Lew Duggan is pleased with the council’s response. “It’s really, really fantastic news. It’ll make things safer and improve pedestrian flow.” Field Days committee member Julie Geange, who put together the submission to the council, is also delighted. “It’s really great that the council is supporting us and what we do for the community.” She says completing the project will enable the committee to move ahead with plans to build a new gateway, with new fences and ticket booths. “It’ll all make things much safer and improve traffic management.” All going well, Ms Geange hopes the improvements will be ready for the 2015 Field Days which are expected to attract more than 25,000 people over three days. ¢

Warm welcome for Online system for building consents Winston in Dargaville u by Colin Patterson
Kaipara District Council building consent applications are now only a click of a mouse away. Since June 1 an online application system has operated via the council’s website. Regulatory and district planning manager Fran Mikulicic says regular users will be able to lodge an application in 10 minutes, as the system remembers their details and pre-fills many parts of the application form. She says the council hopes to receive a large number of applications via the online system and is encouraging as many customers as possible to do this. An over-the-counter service will still be available. “The Government
is constantly lifting the bar for building standards. The introduction of a new electronic consent application and processing system will help both council and applicants respond to these changes and improve the efficiency of the service we are able to provide”, says Ms Mikulicic. To lodge an application on-line, go to KDC’s website www.kaipara.govt. nz and click “on-line services”, then “lodge building consents”. Council staff will process the application, check it complies with statutory requirements and will communicate via e-mail. ¢
PUBLIC NOTICE - TREE REGULATIONS Trees close to powerlines can be dangerous. Falling branches can break lines, causing fire and the risk of electrocution. A person who touches a tree which is in contact with a powerline can suffer an electric shock. In high winds trees can damage powerlines and equipment, causing power failures and danger to the public. The Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 (Tree Regulations 2003) were introduced to ensure that trees are kept away from powerlines to protect the security of the electricity supply and for everyone’s safety. The risk of property damage (e.g. from fire) is also reduced. Under the Regulations, trees must be kept clear of powerlines as shown here: The Growth Limit Zone is the minimum space surrounding any powerline that must be kept clear of trees and other vegetation. The size of this zone depends on the voltage of the powerlines. The following table shows the clearances needed for the powerlines that have a span of up to 150 metres.

Dargaville High up New leader for Maungaturoto Rotary for Stage Challenge u by Colin Patterson
u by Colin Patterson
Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club is set to have a change of guard next week, with Jim Taylor taking over the reins. Mr Taylor takes over as president on July 1, succeeding Eileen Parsons who has stepped down after completing her one-year term. A former general manager of Auckland’s Yellow Bus Company, he has been a Rotarian for 15 years. Now retired and living near Mangawhai, Mr Taylor breeds beef cattle in his spare time. “It’s an interest, not a job.” Mr Taylor has two main priorities during his year in charge. “I want to increase the club’s profile and our membership.” He says Maungaturoto Rotary runs an annual auction. This year it raised $6,000 for community projects. In November it runs a senior citizens’ Christmas Party. Last year more than 100 of the district’s older residents had a great time. Earlier this year club members did marshalling for the Rally of New Zealand. Over the years, Maungaturoto Rotary has instigated a number of ongoing community projects including Nikau Grove and the track

p Dargaville High School students compete at Whangarei’s Forum North
The Dargaville High students took on the best from the north in the final held in front of a packed house at Whangarei’s Forum North. Drama teacher Katrina Sylva said the 68 students rehearsed for 12 weeks, mostly on Sundays. “It was a student-led effort. I was only there to supervise.” The students had to come up with an issue and then write a five-minute production around it. They also choreograph the action and dancing and do the lighting. Dargaville High’s production was about two teenage
boys. Both are gay but one hides his sexual preference. The student who is openly gay gets bullied. The other student gets upset at the treatment his fellow student receives and commits suicide. His death brings the community together. Ms Sylva says the kids were chuffed when the judges named Dargaville runners up to Whangarei Girls’ High. “It’s an exciting thing.” Dargaville High also won nine excellence awards for the students’ efforts. ¢

Keep in the heat and beat the bills This time of year fireplaces are busily turning cubic metres of carefully stacked and dried wood to ashes, while heaters and heat pumps draw down kilowatts from the national grid. It’s a necessary evil when the temperature plummets, but of course all of this costs money — and, if it’s firewood you’re talking about, a fair bit of sweat and effort, too. Now, consider where all that precious heat you’ve generated goes to. How much is trapped inside where it’s needed — and how much simply dissipates into space? Good insulation takes many forms, and it’s the solution to the age-old problem of heat retention. The most basic form of insulation in most Kiwi homes resides in the attic space, but given that such products as batts, foam and fluff can ‘degrade’ over the decades, it’s surprising that many homeowners have never looked inside

their ceiling — or if they have, the last check up was done years ago. Take a ladder and torch to your ‘manhole’ and take a peek — if the insulation sits below the timber joists, it’s time for a top-up or replacement. Insulation under the floor is also a popular choice, but remember that if there’s underlying damp, drainage should be dealt with at the same time. A polythene sheet covering the dirt in your home’s ‘undercroft’ can cut back on rising damp, helping underfloor insulation do a better job. Finally, think of where those costly kilowatts of heat can sneak out. Windows without thermal curtains, drafty doorjambs and other gaps can all

GET YOUR FIRE INSPECTED FOR A SAFER WINTER
crawford solutions
Hi folks, yes, winter is definitely upon us, and I’m sure you’ve got your fires raging. Just a few pointers as to why you should get your flues, chimneys and fire boxes safety checked and cleaned regularly by a professional. Just like cars need maintenance, so do our fires. The flues can burn out, become loose due to wind, outer casings rust, and fireboxes can suffer from metal fatigue and rust. Fire is dangerous. Several weeks ago, I inspected a flue that was really dirty. The top flue had become loose and dislodged, causing hot soot to fall down onto the bottom flue coiling cavity, which had burnt to cinder the timber supporting the outer flue. The house would have gone up if I hadn’t done the inspection. We deliver a full 42 point safety check along with a full clean and repair service. This year’s Mystery Creek Fieldays was a standout event for petrolheads (and their diesel loving kinfolks), with a host of bigger, better machines on display. Here’s our top five — 1. The new Polaris Ace. Quad bike footprint, full rollover protection, and as much fun as a go-kart with the working abilities of a UTV. Full review on the next page, but worth a mention here! 2. The new Ford FPV GT. Wearing the hallowed 351 badge (harking back to those rip-snorting Falcons of the early 70s muscle car era), this may be one of the last antipodean speed demons which will see the light of day, but what a way to go! 351 kilowatts of tarmac-shredding power wrapped in a symphony of automotive design. 3. Suzuki Extreme Air. Trust the people behind the DR200 farm bike to step up and prove that they can walk (or fly) on the wild side, too. Suzuki’s
daredevils pick up where the likes of the Nitro Circus leave off, delivering exactly what their name suggests and wowing the crowds with skyhigh stunts. 4. Ford Ranger test track. Yes — a second one for Ford. But goodness, do they ever deserve it. Not content with simply being the ‘ute of the hour’, the brains behind the Ranger’s success built an entire off road test course to show off their chops, including a waterfall, plunge pool and muddy hill descent. 5. The tractor pull. How can you not love turning a practical, highly engineered piece of farming tech into a snarling high-powered sports machine? The tractor pull pulled the crowds with its mix of tactics and toughness, showcasing the sheer power of modern farm machines. Zach Walling took home the gold this year in a terrific effort. ¢

Ace lays cards on the table Speculation as to the properties and abilities of the new Polaris Ace has been rife since the first images of this nimble little machine emerged from the United States. Was it going to handle like a tiny version of the sporty RZR 900? Would its full roll-over protection system make it a winner on the farm? Would quad riders be able to easily adapt to a seating arrangement and control layout more familiar in a family sedan? All these questions have now been answered, with the Ace landing four wheels on the ground at the recent Mystery Creek Fieldays. In addition to this timely exposure, we’ve had the chance to take a spin in the little double-overhead-cam firecracker, and the results have been surprising to say the least. There’s no question that the safety issue — a huge ‘elephant in the room’ when discussing off-road machines has been addressed here in spades. The full cage, side intrusion bars and mesh combine to make this little vehicle safer than most others which share it’s diminutive footprint. Power too, is hardly lacking, with 32 horses on tap — more than you get from some full-size UTVs. The Ace revs high, but delivers smooth acceleration on the flat and ample torque for the rough stuff, boasting over 600kgs of towing grunt as well. No, the big surprise here is the market who should seriously — as in right now, today — go and take a spin
ROAD SAFETY
in an Ace. There’s no doubt that farmers are a tough breed, but many have been working the land for decades now and the rigours of throwing a leg over the quad saddle, then leaning into the turns all day is no picnic. Anyone with a bad back, or prone to aches and pains must take a seat in the Ace, because it’s comfy, the suspension is forgiving, there’s no need to throw your weight around, and there’s a roll cage to grab onto to help get in and out. Overseas, the Ace has been widely appreciated by those who use such vehicles not for work, but purely for recreation. Aces have been seen in large numbers on the famous Rubicon Trail, where both novice off-roaders and veterans have praised its easy-to-pickup control layout and comfortable ride. Such features definitely transfer across to the farm — and there’s nothing to stop those who buy the Ace for business taking it out for a pleasurable jaunt on the weekend! So safety — a big tick, and OSH will be more than happy with that ROPS. With ample load space and towing power, the Ace can do a lot of what bigger UTVs do, but with a smaller footprint. And for

Say hello to the Sallies u by Joanne Speechly
Dargaville’s Salvation Army Family Store reopens this week with a new manager, new ideas and a new lick of paint. Former work broker, tutor and gallery owner, Mandy Wood, will manage the newlook shop, which has been renovated by Dargaville-based NorthTec students. Mandy says she is looking forward to getting back into retail and working with the community. “I really enjoy working with people and helping those who are going through a hard time. This is a chance to step out of my own space and one I am really looking forward to.” Mandy, who has recently completed her Hospice training and is now working with a lady one-on-one, says the Salvation Army is supportive of her
volunteer duties. “Volunteering is really rewarding — I would recommend it to anyone who would like to give back to their community. We still need more volunteers in the shop and people are welcome to call in and find out how they can get involved.” The Salvation Army’s sole Dargaville venture will operate along the same lines as the Whangarei store. New clothes will be put out weekly and will have a month-long shelf life. At the end of the month, all unsold clothing will go overseas or be used for rags to make way for new stock — nothing gets wasted. The

However, due to limited space, only smaller items are sold in the Dargaville outlet. Profits from Dargaville’s family store go towards helping Salvation Army ser vices throughout Northland. p New designer in town, Peter Boyd
Mr Boyd has just returned home to Dargaville where he grew up after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Victoria University of Wellington. He has taken the plunge and set up his own landscape design business in Dargaville. “I’m just putting my name out there.” Mr Boyd agrees that a tight economy means work may be difficult to find. “But there’s only one other landscape designer in Dargaville, that I am aware of so there are opportunities out there.” He says landscape design is more than paths and gardens. “It’s incredibly broad. It can cover almost everything, from street furniture through to rural and urban planning.” Mr Boyd says he will start with domestic and residential landscape design but will consider opportunities for commercial or industrial landscape design. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Lifestyler, My congratulations on a consistently unbiased coverage regards Kaipara’s local government issues. These contrast starkly with other local papers which seem to rely primarily on KDC press releases. I wish though to draw attention to reasons given by the Kaipara District Council CEO Steve Ruru for the deferment of road maintenance and possible loss of NZTA subsidies reported in Colin Patterson’s article.
Mr Ruru asserts that the need for these deferments is attributable to a loss of income from striking ratepayers. However at the time of the select committee hearings where he also blamed striking ratepayers, I enquired of Mr Ruru whether, if council had withheld interest payments on the illegal loans raised from ABN amro’, there would have been sufficient working capital to undertake the necessary work and qualify for the applicable subsidies.
