Gifted Awareness Week is celebrated annually across the country sponsored by a number of charitable trusts and educational institutes, and among the budding writers and future artists in Dargaville was 12-year-old Brooklyn Wilson, who wants to beautify Ruawai’s waterfront and upgrade the wharf, making it a ‘must see’ attraction for tourists. Around a year ago, Brooklyn began by surveying the community asking what they would like done. She then came up with an action plan, and liaised with the Kaipara District Council Commission chair, John Robertson. continued on page 3…

The Bill aims to resolve five years of illegal Kaipara rates and has had its first airing in parliament, with members voting 116 for, and four against. The Bill is now before the Local Government and Environment Select Committee, with the opportunity for members of the public to make their views known. KDC commissioners chair, John Robertson, said he welcomed the

news and had also been heartened by indications that the Select Committee would be coming to the Kaipara to hear submissions. “I really do urge people to take this opportunity to make a submission in support of the Bill. We need this legislation to tidy up past rating errors.” He says that the Bill is not about avoiding accountability and notes comments by Northland MP, Mike

Sabin, which made clear that the intention of the Bill was not to absolve those responsible for these errors. Submissions close on Thursday, July 25, and can be made electronically or in writing, and submitters can choose whether or not to speak to their submissions. Links for assistance can be found on the council website www.kaipara. govt.nz, and a fact sheet is also available from council offices.

 Tangowahine farmer, Milan Radich, recently discovered two swamp kauri on his property which rivalled Tane Mahuta in size and featured in the Kaipara Lifestyler, June 4 edition. Going through his archives, he found a photo of the previous farm owner, Don Millstead and extractor, Ken Glamuzina lying on top of a giant kauri at the Tangowahine farm in the 1950s. Milan remembers a television crew from America filming the excavation. It was his first time seeing a film camera, and his fascination with swamp kauri increased.

Otamatea team make a difference Tourism focus for ‘new’ hotel  by Sheri O’Neill

A short, sharp and somewhat shocking video delivering a strong message has won $5,000 and the possibility of nationwide exposure for an Otamatea High School team. Year 13 students, Jake Powell, Josiah Day and Jack Williamson, produced the winning entry in the Wiseup TVC Challenge. Their brief was to ‘make a difference in 30 seconds’ by creating a public service announcement for the Foundation for Alcohol & Drug Education, with the winning video to be considered for airing on nationwide television. Jake Powell, who directed, says the video — Drugs Destroy your Brain — only took about an hour to shoot, although around ten hours to edit. “We only found out about the competition about a week before it closed, so we didn’t have a lot of time to put into it.”But their ‘less is more’ approach obviously paid off. The boys are not sure yet what they will do with the money. “We might put some of it aside for more film projects,”

Jake says. Despite having his own sights on engineering study next year, he says he would not rule out the possibility of more filmmaking in the future. To watch the boys’ video go to: wiseupvideo.brandknew.net/meth-helpwise-up-entry. ¢

Gifted kid shares vision Brooklyn and the commissioner are coming up with ideas of how to purchase a condemned house on the site she intends to beautify. She has made a model of what she would like the waterfront to look like with features including a playground and a viewpoint over the river. An archway is also planned telling the story of the taniwha, Pokopoko, of the Northern Wairoa river and she is planning a colouring competition to get ideas from the community. She is also meeting with community groups to talk about her project. What began as part of the Gifted Kids community project has turned into a full scale operation, and Brooklyn’s mum, Melissa, says ‘she’s on fire.’ “I’m really looking forward to hearing from the community and receiving their feedback,” says Brooklyn.

As well as sharing their ideas and vision, the gifted kids also fundraised for a trip down to Wellington in November, to visit parliament, Weta Workshop and Te Papa. Lead teacher, Deb Green, says there are many success stories of students who have gone through the gifted kids programme and some have gone on to work with humanitarian groups around the world. ¢

The big five challenge  by Rose Rees-Owen

Forty-four fishers and hunters are gathering game for the Tokatoka Tavern Big Five competition. To win hunters need to present five animals; duck, pheasant, peacock, snapper and eel. Last years weights included a 9.26kg snapper caught by Raymond Marychurch and a 5.64kg peacock caught by Jason Bellamy. The overall winner for the open section was Ruawai resident, Max McKinley, with 80 points and his wife, Sara, took out the women’s section with 34 points in her first year hunting.  Last years winner of the Big Five, “I have entered again Max Mckinley, with a giant snapper this year and have really enjoyed my weekends fishing, shooting and catching eels. It’s loads of fun — I have finally realised, after all these years, what all the fuss was about during the shooting season,” says Sara. She often goes out shooting and fishing with Max but says opening weekend is ‘off limits’. The competition began on May 4 and the last weigh in is at 6pm June 28 with the prize giving the following day at 3pm. “There will be a spit roast free for the competitors and a local band playing in the evening, The Black Bean” says proprietor Catherine Lawrie. Catherine says there is still time to enter and be in the running to win $1,000 in cash prizes and spot prizes from their sponsors.

‘Independent sovereign state’ declared A challenge to devise a constitution for the Independent Sovereign State of Kaiwaka has led to the establishment of a discussion group for interested citizens. Organiser, Helen Marsh, says the discussion group follows a ‘Constitution Conversation’ held in Kaiwaka last month as part of a nationwide enquiry into New Zealand’s constitutional framework. “The sovereign state is not real, of course, but we found it a useful way to bring the idea of a constitution closer to home. This next meeting is an opportunity for others to join us to discuss constitutional issues.” She says topics to be covered by the group include democratic concerns, including ways to control the power of government and the pros and cons of majority rule. Also up for debate will be the relevance of the 1835 Declaration of Independence and the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, and other issues relating to tino rangatiratanga, or Maori sovereignty. Building better bottom lines

New arrivals at Big River

The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group is holding winter field days at farms each end of the Kaipara Harbour, aimed at farmers wanting to know more about the benefits of healthy soil biology.

Four new interns from the Tauranga’s New Zealand School of Radio join the Big River FM team to gain experience.

 New intern, Rory Naylor, with station manager, Anaru Tana

 Agro-ecologist, Nicole Masters, discusses a profile at a soil workshop

The field days are part of IKHMG’s Flagship Sites “paddock–to–harbour” initiative, using farmer mentorship and on-farm demonstrations of practical methods to help mitigate sedimentation and eutrophication in the harbour. IKHMG coordinator, Leane Makey, says integrated management for the Kaipara Harbour is critical. “Integrated management is where the harbour, catchment and ecosystems are considered as one, and this can be achieved at a farm-scale by promoting the function of soil ecosystems.” Agro-ecologist Nicole Masters will lead the one-day workshops, which will cover soil organisms and biological soil management and provide tools for the assessment of soil health on the farm. “The largest factor limiting farm productivity is how well we support the life of our free, underground workforce,” she says. “What we do above ground can have a huge effect on what happens below our feet. ” d ite m i L ition Ed

An introductory workshop will be held on Friday July 5 at organic sheep and beef Muriwai Valley Farms in Ahuroa, and a more intensive look at soil microbes will follow on Monday, July 8 at Aoroa Farm in Dargaville. Aoroa Farm owners, Hal Harding and Penny Smart, refer to their soil as the farm’s engine room. “Understanding what is happening underground — the biology and ecology, the processes — has enlightened us considerably across our entire farming system,” Mr Harding says. Along with a spade and wet weather gear, participants are asked to bring a soil sample 150mm square by 200mm deep from a managed paddock on their farm, and a 2cm by 10cm soil core from an undisturbed area close by, such as under a fence line or roadside. Both workshops run from 10.30am– 3.30pm and include a barbecue lunch. RSVP by July 1: 021 818 102 or lmakey@slingshot.co.nz

The weather delayed interns, Carrick Blacker, Josh Calvert and Mahinaarangi Paki but 19 year-old Rory Naylor was excited to start on Monday. He comes from west Auckland and he is eager to get involved with the community and learn about its different facets hoping to join a local soccer team. Rory’s first impressions of Dargaville is that it’s a relaxed place which suits his down to earth nature He is excited to begin his internship and gain experience at the community radio station before working in a commercial environment. Being an announcer for Classic Hits would be

his ideal job because it complements his music tastes. He is looking forward to learning production — designing adverts and producing trailers for up and coming events — to widen his skill set and complement his broadcasting CV. Rory hopes to stay in Dargaville for six months and learn as much as he can at Big River FM. ¢

But the town itself has taken on a new cloak, with a major roading facelift courtesy of the New Zealand Transport Agency, many coats of paint, and extensive landscaping. The wharf area includes reclaimed land, a boat ramp and walkways to make it a future waterside picnic and fishing spot. “It’s reported that some lucky fisherman caught several legal snapper within 200 metres of the wharf and that about 30 shags can be seen working a shoal of small fish in the wharf area,” said 150th celebrations committee president, Albie Paton.

The wharf project is being financed from donations, following resource consent from the Northland Regional Council. “If you have indicated that you would like to buy a plank or make a donation then now is the time. Any donation large or small will be very welcome. Other ways people or companies can help is by donations of materials, machinery time, labour, even goods that we may not use but are saleable. Recognition of all our donors will be featured at the wharf. “Co-ordination of the celebrations is gathering speed and the committee is now meeting fortnightly to finalise the celebrations. Registration forms are ready and the programme is set so momentum is building,” said Mr Paton. ¢

Wages paid to children by our employment expert, Gilmore Brown

The 2012 budget repealed the tax credit for children and replaced it with a new limited tax exemption. This change removed the previous annual tax credit of $245.70. A limited tax exemption applies from the 2012/2013 income year and is designed to ensure children; • do not have to file a tax return if they have income of less than $2,340.00, and

Roper & Jones

• the income has not had any tax deducted at source. The Inland Revenue guide refers to a child’s wages from babysitting or mowing lawns as meeting the limited tax exemption criteria.

Ready to talk home loans? I’ll come to you.

However, if a child earns more than $2,340.00 or derives income from some other sources (e.g. interest, dividends, trust income, wages from another person), they may be required to file a tax return. This may give rise to a tax liability as tax will be calculated on total income. Where a child’s wages are claimed as a deduction by an employer the wages must be returned for PAYE. For example, say a farming family wish to pay wages to their children, it must go through the normal payroll process. The wages will be deductible for the farmer and taxable for the children. To ensure a deduction is permitted, the wages should be paid regularly. The wages must be for genuine work done, and paid at a market rate.

The child must complete an IR330 tax declaration form and have PAYE deducted. Animal health options in Kaiwaka A new Animal Health Centre which focuses on natural remedies and holistic healing is opening in Kaiwaka and director, Sandra Urwin, says it’s about choices. “Owners need to be informed about choices so they feel confident in managing their animal’s health.” The conventional treatment of cancer, arthritis, autoimmune conditions, vaccinations, as well as chemical worm and flea control are replaced with homeopathy, herbal medicine, flower essence and Bioptron Light Therapy. “Drugs and nutritional deficits, not disease, are the major factors in deaths of our pets. There is too much reliance on surgery, test results, antibiotics and steroids.” Sandra has been operating a centre in Orewa and has a Diploma in Natural Animal Health graduating with honours. Dargaville High School tackles giant play

Roadworks scheduled for dangerous surfaces

 by Sheri O’Neill

 by Rose Rees-Owen

Senior drama students at Dargaville High School are getting to grips with Arthur Miller’s famous play, The Crucible.

Regular commuters travelling through Matakohe and Ruawai are experiencing cracked roads and uneven surfaces caused by the drought.

Written by the American playwright at the height of the McCarthy communist ‘witch hunts’ in the 1950s, the play is based on the true story of the 17th century witchcraft trials in Salem, Massachusetts, which saw an entire town threatened by the accusations of a group of teenage girls. Drama teacher, Kate Davison, says the production has been a giant undertaking, with 27 students from years 11–13 rehearsing the play. “As the

performance counts towards NCEA assessment, we’ve doubled up on some of the parts so everyone gets a turn on stage,” she says. Rehearsals have included twice a week after school throughout this term, and every night this week leading up to opening night on July 3. Ms Davison says she has been impressed by the way the students are coping. “They’re doing extremely well — it’s a huge play, with a lot of lines to learn, and they’re all really getting the hang of it now.” The production will run from July 3–6, at 7pm each night, in the DHS drama room. Tickets are $10 adult and $5 child, at the door or pre-order from the school office: 09 439 7229. ¢

Commuter, Shannon Toia, drives from Ruawai to Dargaville Monday to Friday and is surprised the uneven surfaces hasn’t caused an accident. “There are sections just after Ruawai primary school and along Naumai where the road dips quite badly towards the drains.” NZ Transport Agency’s Senior Delivery Manager for Northland, Jacqui HoriHoult, attributes the uneven surfaces to last summer’s hot dry spell. “As the soil beneath the highway dried out it cracked and slumped causing sections of the highway on top of it to settle as well and become uneven.” Roadworks are planned for these areas and will be completed in two weeks depending on the weather. “Please be aware of temporary speed

restrictions, any changes in the layout of the highway at work sites, and to obey warning signs for the safety of drivers themselves and their passengers, and also for the safety of contractors working to repair the highway,” says Ms Hori-Hoult. ¢

“The timber was as good as the day it was built,” says Noel. He adds, “the wharf was used as a dock to transport canned toheroa to Auckland but the factory closed in the 1950s.” Owner of NUTS, Matt Conmee, says the timber is sound for the monitoring station and has passed the information on to NIWA. ¢

This legend just keeps getting better  by our motoring correspondent

Thompson and his team were at the cutting edge of tyre performance then, and the company which proudly carries his name still strives to break new ground today. On the 9th of July the

The word ‘legend’ is tossed about a lot these days, especially in the arena of motorsport. But there’s a select band of engineers, drivers, designers and innovators who truly deserve the title, and numbered among them must surely be a man who’s name is often seen at racing events, even though he’s long since passed on from this life. California-born Mickey Thompson has given his name to a range of tyres and wheels geared up for serious competition and great looks, but few people know why the man himself was just such a legendary figure. It begins with his quest for speed, and continues this day with those who carry on his legacy, crafting new technologies to win races and help folks get more out of their machines. Mickey was the first American to crack the 400 mile per hour barrier at the famous Bonneville flats, driving a car called the Challenger in 1960. Kiwi Burt Munro would go on to make history on the very same track, but Mickey built

faster and faster cars — leaving our own ‘world’s fastest Indian’ champion to still hold the motorcycle crown. He broke more land speed records in his career than any other person, ever. Not content with just one motorsport victory, Mickey engineered new cars for the Indy 500 (where another Kiwi, Scott Dixon, is now flying high). His machines, with new tyres and a radical engine placement redesign, were almost banned for being ahead of their time. He also took off road racing to a new level, competing in the gruelling Baja rally and winning — in his fifties! All this achievement came from hard work and innovation — Mickey

manager of Mickey Thompson’s New Zealand operations will be in town for a presentation at Gas and Tyre Services, talking about the latest in technology from the forefront of the offroad world. ¢

New paint technology peels away

Taking the hard work out of a hard day’s riding

 by our motoring correspondent

 by Andy Breynton

Up until now, painting your vehicle has been a big decision. That salmon pink candy flake you thought looked so great at the hot rod show might look amazing on your Honda, but then again, if it didn’t you were left with big bill and a car which was more an eyesore than eye candy. It also took a professional with thousands of dollars worth of airbrush equipment to do the job properly — or at least a few hours of painstaking masking up to avoid ugly overspray. Now Dargaville Auto Electrical have discovered a new product which they have brought to New Zealand — one which eliminates these issues. It’s effectively a ‘latex paint’, which wraps your fenders, rims, panels or in fact any part of your vehicle. And when you want a change, it simply peels away, easier than ripping a band-aid from your arm and a lot less painfully! The new technology forms a second skin right over your original paint,

These days you’d never even consider buying a car without power steering. Yet it wasn’t that long ago that even luxury supercars like the Ferrari F40 were designed and built without it. Now the same revolution is happening in a different automotive field — the world of ATV quads. It’s one which is catching on, too, for a good reason. Farmers push their quads to the limit (and sometimes deep into the mud as well) just to get through another day of hard yakka. There’s no place for weakness in design or lack of power in the back blocks, and any advantage which can make a day’s work that little less gruelling is much appreciated.

and can even be layered to create camo, two-tone and fade effects. Any overspray can be peeled away, and as the paint naturally breaks at edges and along the contour lines of your car, any ‘extra’ just pulls right off windows or headlamps, for example. The website www.dipyourcar.com carries all the tech info about this new method of painting, as well as some video footage of what can be achieved with this product. If you want to upgrade your car’s look, but don’t want to worry about sanding, priming, base coating and airbrushing ‘for keeps’, then this is a must see innovation. ¢

Enter the Honda Foreman 500 — part of the Japanese manufacturer’s range of serious, no-nonsense rural ATVs, and sitting in the ‘sweet spot’ of weight and power for Kiwi farmers. With the addition of power steering this machine makes easy work of all-day riding, taking the stress and strain off the rider’s body and instead letting the tough chassis and suspension of the Foreman 500 take the knocks. Honda’s formula for the perfect ATV quad has been refined slowly generation after generation, and the 2013 Foreman boasts more little innovations to augment its willing, reliable engine, massive load space and high ground clearance. Bigger guards keep the mud where it should be — on the ground, not the rider. A powerful third headlamp lights up the dark on those early winter mornings. And of course there’s that power steering system… one slice of modern tech you’ll thank Honda for after a long day’s work. ¢

FIELDAYS FORECAST MASSIVE LOWS ACROSS NEW ZEALAND

 by Andy Bryenton LT-F400FL3

The Polaris Ranger should be a well known sight by now to anyone who’s anyone in rural New Zealand — these versatile machines have had a strong showing at the recent Mystery Creek Fieldays and have steadily built a loyal fan base over the years with rugged, dependable grunt in the harshest conditions. But there has always been another side to Polaris as well. It’s a side epitomised by the more fiery temperament and track-bred sensibilities of their RZR range — most specifically the potent RZR 900. The key to the performance of the big RZR is its 875cc ProStar engine, an almost ridiculously efficient mill which churns out 60 horses from its twin cylinders. It’s enough to catapult the RZR through the toughest of off road courses, through dunes, mud and more. And now that same engine has found a home in what Polaris must surely see as the ‘ultimate recipe’ — the new Ranger XP 900. The newest Ranger blends RZR aggression with the practicality rural folks demand from a working machine. There’s no shortage of style — check out those mag wheels, the rakish new cage design, and the almost ‘stealth’ panel design. But there’s plenty of

substance, too, thanks to that powerful twin-pot overhead cam engine, coupled to the toughest CVT box Polaris have ever engineered. There’s been no sacrifice of vital load space or capacity either — this model is in fact longer than 2012’s, with a large carrying tray and plenty of torque to shift heavy gear. Perhaps most exciting of all is the option to completely enclose the cab, isolating the driver and passenger from the elements. Sounds like a great idea in this cold weather! And all the trademarked Lock and Ride panels — from windshield to doors — are a snap to take on and off as jobs demand. With the XP 900 Polaris have put together their best extruded tubing cage, their best motor, and their best suite of handy little innovations to build the Ranger you wish you owned.

School’s work on display for Matariki

Vigilance saves historic landmark  by Andy Bryenton

The owners, staff and patrons of Dargaville’s historic Northern Wairoa Hotel are extremely grateful for the sharp eyes of a local good Samaritan, who spotted smoke billowing from the vents below the building early on Saturday morning.

 Judges from the Dargaville Arts Association, Patricia Mortensen and Robyn Mitchell, hold up the winning entry in the 11–12 year old category, part of the static kite exhibition at the Dargaville Museum. Selwyn Park Primary School students who made the kite, Paulie Mokoare, Siale Otuvai and Layton Mokoraka won Hot Wheels figurines donated by the Warehouse and the school will receive a voucher for two nights accommodation at the Waipoua Forest camping grounds for a family of five which they can raffle off. The judges stand beside Arapohue School’s display of kites telling the story of Matariki, a constellation of stars which signals the Maori New Year. The winning entries will be displayed in the museum’s foyer.

With the swift response of our local volunteer fire brigade the blaze was quickly controlled and extinguished, but events could easily have turned tragic if not for the vigilance of the as yet unnamed hero. Hotel staff had been careful to have all fireplaces checked and certified for safety before re-opening the saloon bar, built some time in the 1920s. But modern methods of construction did not apply in those times, and none could have realised that a wooden beam ran close to the fire’s brick supports, hidden under the floor. The heat in the grate transferred through brick and concrete to ignite a slow smoulder in this beam, which was laid down as part of the original construction.

Huge turnout for run/walk

 Wintery weather didn’t deter 530 competitors taking part in the Newman Engineering Baylys 2 Dargaville Run/Walk held last weekend. Among them was Deborah Eyles, Megan Phillips, Nicki Lowe, Monique Pulman and Francie Pyke from Dargaville happy to cross the finish line. A large number of visitors travelled to Kaipara to take part and Sport Northland’s Team Leader, Hayley Overton, said competitors had not only come from Auckland but had travelled from the Far North. Seven run/walks are happening all over Northland and Hayley says a number of people have committed to complete the whole series.

It’s a timely reminder to all fireplace owners, especially those in old 1800s and 1900s buildings — despite the best efforts of modern fire inspectors and certifiers, ancient building practices may yet hold unwanted surprises. A full safety-focussed rebuild of the fireplace is now underway, and planned renovations of the Northern Wairoa have only been briefly set back by the fire. The Collins family, proprietors of the hotel, wish to express their thanks to the fire crew, and to the unknown good neighbour who raised the alarm.
