The event raised more than $1,700. “We had a fantastic day for the Mud Run, blessed with beautiful weather and entries far exceeded our expectations. Thanks to many local Maungaturoto businesses that sponsored prizes and Pak ’n Save Whangarei donated drink bottles and a voucher, which went to the refinery team for coming in first. New lighting ‘a security threat’ u by Paul Campbell

Kaipara District Council’s roll-out of a $1.2 million energy-efficient LED street lighting programme has sparked community concerns over safety and security in public areas with the newly installed lights seen as inadequate replacements for the old sodium bulbs.

The Pahi Reserve Society, which administers the Pahi Beach Holiday Park, has asked council for ‘improvements to be made as a matter of urgency, to the street lighting in the camping ground, domain and the wharf area.’ A letter to council cites an incident of vandalism blamed on a lack of adequate

lighting. ‘The present situation is a threat to health and safety and the security of property. The wharf area does not have sufficient light to show up anyone in trouble there. Our caretaker reports that a camper complained that he had a tyre slashed during his overnight stay and had found a broken knife blade on

the ground nearby. The incident was reported to police.’ Dargaville resident, Alan Morgan, says “The new LED street lights are very dull and should not be used as they do not give out enough light. continued on page 3 …

Mr Berridge picked up a curiously shaped empty Toheroa shell with a large dent in the middle just south of Glinks Gully. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said. “It looks like it’s been trapped in something, but I don’t know how it could have been when you think about where they live.” Mr Berridge will take the shell to the Kumara Box when he is finished admiring it to be part of the Searles Marine Collection.

Mycoplasma bovis public meeting u by Ayla Miller

A free public meeting about Mycoplasma bovis is being hosted by Dargaville Veterinary Centre to arm locals with upto-date information about the disease.

p Dargaville resident Alan Morgan, armed with a torch, awaits nightfall and the new street lighting

“Replacement of these lights should be stopped as the council should be seen to prevent burglaries, not to promote them. I strongly suggest that council members do a tour at night along Ranfurly and Awakino Road to see for themselves that they have made a big mistake.” Pahi Reserve Society deputy chair, Ralph Williams, had earlier independently approached council over the new lights. “A month ago, council replied that it would investigate improvements, but nothing has happened. I would, therefore, have no hesitation in inviting the KDC manager together with a council member to meet me after dark at the camping ground. I suggest they arrive armed with torches and a plausible solution.”

In reply to Mr Morgan’s complaint, KDC acting general manager infrastructure, Fran Mikulicic, says “The LED fittings focus more light onto the road and the footpath reducing light pollution to neighbouring properties. “The LED fittings make things clearer. Human eyes are designed for ‘white’ light, and this type of light improves visibility, especially in wet weather. We have received more positive feedback than negative comments from the community. Regardless, council is committed to undertake a survey post installation of the LED lights to ensure areas have sufficient lighting levels.” Meanwhile, in Tinopai, representation from residents has already succeeded, with the old brighter sodium light at the wharf being retained as a safety and navigation measure. ¢

The meeting will cover ways to deal with trace animals, signs farmers can look out for, options for testing and how farmers can prevent the disease from spreading. “If farmers find out they have trace animals or what people can do if they become an infected farm with restricted access and what others can do to support those farmers. We have one of our local farmers who sells bulls coming to discuss what changes he will be implementing and help the reduce the risk of spreading the disease,” said veterinarian, Sarah Bird. Three Dargaville Veterinar y Centre vets will also present the latest information on the disease they gathered from a New Zealand Veterinary Association conference held recently in Hamilton. “I imagine there will be quite a lot of discussion about it since Mycoplasma bovis was identified in Canterbury nearly a year ago. There is a lot more knowledge about it than

there was back then.” Mycoplasma bovis is a bacterial disease and causes untreatable mastitis in dairy and beef cows. It also can cause severe pneumonia in infected calves, ear infections, abortions, swollen joints and lameness in all ages of cattle. The disease is commonly found in cattle all over the world and does not infect humans. It presents no food safety risk; however, it spreads from animal to animal through close contact. It spreads between farms through the movement of animals that are infected but may not be showing symptoms. A representative from Rural Support Trust will also be speaking about what they can offer in the way of support for farmers if they find they have trace animals. The meeting will be held at the Dargaville Town Hall on Wednesday, June 27 beginning with morning tea at 10.30 am and the meeting starting at 11am.

GREAT TIME TO PLANT TREES

I have been having a very enjoyable time over the last month planting native trees. I was part of a team from the Pouto Community that planted 500 mixed native trees on a stunning day in late May around lake Kanono. This was to aid with protecting the biodiversity around the lake and the water quality in the lake. With help from children from the Pouto School plus parents, a NRC staff member and some community members we had it done in a few hours. The day was organised and the trees were supplied by DOC who had staff on hand to instruct and help with the planting. As I write and weather dependant I am hoping this weekend to join in with the Ōtamatea Harbour Care Society planting more natives on Lupton’s farm at Marahemo. Organised and facilitated by Mark Vincent, Ōtamatea Harbour Care Society who has a Facebook page if you are wanting to find out more about them and the great work that they do. We have also been busy on our farm planting free trees from Te Arai nursery near Mangawhai, that we signed up for through the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group (IKHMG) at the Field days. Every year Te Arai Nursery make up to 350,000 native trees available free for anyone in the Kaipara catchment. Visit the IKHMG website or Facebook page for more information The Dargaville Intermediate provided us with help in the way of students to weed around trees planted on our farm boundary and also supplied us with some flax and cabbage trees to support our wetlands. A big thank you to all the above, with every tree planted we make a positive difference for our environment and for Northland.

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora Big news for everyone in Kaipara is the shape of the new roading contract, included for Council’s consideration at its June Council meeting, for the period 1 July 2018 until 30 June 2022. Everyone I meet with has a road complaint or a story to tell, especially as winter comes on. Frustrations from the past will ease, I hope, as the new contract with its range of bigger improvements comes into effect from 1 July, subject to awarding of the contract, at our June Council meeting. Biggest highlights for me from the proposed new road contract are: • The contractor is now required to have a customer liaison officer to manage all service requests; if you call or email Council with a complaint or request regarding our roading network your call will be logged and immediately referred to the contractor’s customer liaison officer. You’ll then be kept informed of progress on the problem you reported. We’ve not had this level of connectedness in the last five-year contract. • On our unsealed network, which is most of our Kaipara roads, there will be routine grading and an extra focus on drainage inspection including watertable drains and culverts and returning gravel back to the road when it’s been washed overboard. Improved culvert end cleaning by diggers and more use of shovels will be welcomed.

2018-28. For the first year of the plan, the average Rate increase is LESS than what was consulted on; 4.97% increase rather than 5.45% increase. Kaipara has a small rating base, and a 1% increase in the General Rate amounts to about $200,000 in real terms. Based on that formula it’s fair to say many individual farms in Kaipara have revenue greater than a 5% increase in rates! Still, we’re doing more with less, seeking efficiencies at every turn and getting on with the job. The Long Term Plan has been audited, and subject to Council adoption at the June Council meeting, Auditors will offer their opinion on the Plan, it’s all square, fit for purpose and is right on target to be operative on 1 July. Brightest stars are all coming out about now for Matariki events across Kaipara District, and also for the return of the annual Kaipara Citizens Awards. We’ll be calling for nominations soon – something for you to consider while you’re stargazing. Beyond that, I reckon it’s a season for eyes on the road ahead and both hands on the wheel.

OBITUARY

‘Harry’ Baycroft “They needed someone in Heaven to be Santa for all the little children there.” A family epitaph for the late Henry Alfred (Harry) Baycroft, 93, who passed in Dargaville on June 6 — often better known for his role of Santa to a generation of Dargaville youngsters and their families. Harry was born in Canada, and lived there for many years, arriving in Kaipara on his retirement. Although, retirement was perhaps a misnomer, for he continued to volunteer for his community, as an active member of the Dargaville Pakeke Lions Club and the Dargaville Returned Services Association. As a Lions member, he spearheaded a Make Work Project to assist men who were under court order to perform community service. He regularly visited many house-bound and hospitalised sick and elderly in the community of Dargaville and was the chair of the RSA’s welfare committee. His most famous volunteer contribution was as the community’s resident Santa Claus from 1995 until 2016. In his Santa persona, he attended hundreds of events over the years. Harry is survived by his son Allen (Vivian) and their children Harrison (Rachel) and Anne (Chastin), his daughter Margaret (John Bishop) of New Zealand and her children Patrick, Lisa, and Jimmy Forrest (Teeaye), and Margaret’s 11 grandchildren. He was

predeceased by his beloved wife Alice. A private Cremation Service was held on June 9 with his ashes to be interred next to his wife in the Mount Wesley RSA Cemetery. A special memorial service and celebration of Harry’s life will be held at the Methodist Church, Dargaville on October 6, 2018. Memorial donations in Harry’s honour are invited to charities of choice. ¢

Showquest performance impresses u by Ayla Miller

Dargaville High School has placed third in Showquest, the new equivalent of the popular inter-school competition Stage Challenge.

p Dargaville High School placed third at Showquest with their performance Our House is Not a Home

The school’s performance was titled, Our house is not a home, and considered the impact on the child when their parents are in a dysfunctional relationship. One of the three supervising teachers, Katrina Sylva, said the performance hoped to show that children are resilient and are able to overcome the challenges of difficult home relationships when supported by friends and family. “Dargaville won awards for design and visual enhancement, and we were awarded third place overall. Alee Burgess [who played the mother] also won a scholarship from UNITEC to a dance and choreography workshop,” she said. “The students gain not only performance, choreography and design skills from participating but are also are able to show leadership and develop their skills in teamwork and

communication.” The competition is an extra-curricular activity supervised by teachers and created by students. Year 11 and 12 students helped with designing and creating the set, props and costumes. Judge and New Zealand singer, Jackie Clarke, said she was very moved by the performance. “I was thoroughly entertained, I was challenged, and I was delighted to see how so many of the elements it takes to make up a good production were here and were evident tonight.” Showquest is a new performing arts platform for schools, consisting of a nationwide series of events produced by Rockquest Promotions Ltd, with the support of the Ministry of Education, that supports schools showcase music, drama and dance. First place went to Bream Bay College, and Whangarei Girls High School came second. ¢

Drug investigation arrests u by Jill Dickie

As a part of an ongoing methamphetamine investigation Northland police, with assistance from Auckland and the National Organised Crime group, have executed search warrants around Whangarei, Dargaville, Kawakawa, Moerewa, Kaikohe, Kaitaia and Awanui, resulting in 22 arrests. Police have also seized 71 grams of methamphetamine, worth an estimated potential street value of $35,500 and a quantity of cannabis from a number of addresses. Other items seized include three firearms, a taser, ammunition, around $40,000 in cash and additional stolen property worth thousands of dollars. “We know the devastating harm that methamphetamine causes to users and these arrests will go a long way toward reducing the supply chain of methamphetamine in Northland,” said Whangarei Area Commander, Inspector Justin Rogers. “We are dedicated in our ongoing efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the manufacture and supply of illegal drugs and hold them to account.” He said Northland Police is committed to the Te Ara Oranga

partnership with Northland DHB, launched last August, which has been effective in supporting and assisting those with addiction and ultimately reducing methamphetamine demand and harm in our community. So far more than one hundred people have been identified as users as a result of the investigation who are referred through the Te Ara Oranga programme. “We want to reassure the community that our focus is not only on arresting drug offenders but also to provide assistance and referrals to those who are addicted to methamphetamine and need help,” says Inspector Rogers. If anyone has information regarding illegal drug activity, they should contact the nearest Police station or contact Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

Volunteers ‘beating heart’

Learning through play

u by Ayla Miller

More than 9,200 St John volunteers were recognised for their extensive contribution of two million hours to New Zealand during National Volunteer Week last week.

Ruawai Primary School is in its third year of trialling a playbased learning programme and principal Curtis Gaylor says the results have been encouraging.

p Mangawhai St John Opportunity Shop from left: St Jenny Viscovic, Nina Carre, Olivia Heaton and Jude Casford

Mangawhai St John Opportunity Shop manager, Frances Kennelley, says she has 40 volunteers on her books currently. “All the volunteers are passionate about volunteering for St John in particular because we are an essential life-saving charity. I think everyone has a connection to St John in some way. All of us, myself included, have needed St John at some time in their life. A team of more than 30 dedicated volunteers and Kaipara mayor Jason Smith worked towards improving the water quality of the Kaipara Harbour during the most recent Otamatea HarbourCare planting day at the White Rock Hills property. The volunteers were joined by Northland Regional Council Kaipara representative Penny Smart, Alison Whiteford from Beef and Lamb and Kathryne Easton on behalf of the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group. Together the group worked on planting up a gully, which contributes to a stream already fenced and planted in previous years. “It’s really great to support community initiatives like this, and very satisfying to see the results they can achieve. Well done Otamatea HarbourCare. I’ll certainly be keen to help out again next year,” said Mayor, Jason Smith. This was the third planting day at the White Rock Hills property, Marohemo and Otamatea HarbourCare secretary, Mark Vincent, says he’s looking forward to another successful planting season this year. “The weather was fabulous, and about 2,500 trees got planted in the session,” he said. In previous years the planting days have seen the support of television personalities such as Te Radar, Paul Henry and former Kaipara mayor, Greg Gent.

The Dargaville Intermediate year eight netball team will represent their school at the 2018 Anchor Aims Games in Tauranga this September.

More than 100 primary school students took part in The Kauri Museum’s opening ceremony for the annual Matariki exhibition this year in a celebration of history, culture and creativity.

The event is the largest sporting event for 11–13-year-olds in the Southern Hemisphere, and there are 22 different sports competing over the week-long tournament. Team manager, Francie Pyke, says they are ‘very proud’ to be given this opportunity and compete against other teams from such a large area. “This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of us. We have a large total we need to fundraise. Approximately $15,000 for players, coaches, manager, umpire for the week’s accommodation, food, uniforms and travel [for the week],” she says. “The girls have made an amazing commitment already and have been busy running the canteen at our local

We are planning a monster garage sale in August, catering, more sausage sizzles and baking.” Coach, Kath Nathan, says she enjoys being part of netball as a sport not only for the fitness element but also the strategy. “Netball is a sport that is designed for women due to the mental endurance and ability required to succeed.” The team have already raised $9,000 since January this year, which Kath says is due to a “massive effort by the kids and their parents.” The team say they would be grateful for any further assistance with fundraising opportunities and sponsorship from the community.  ¢

Students, teachers and parents then had the chance to learn about Maori musical instruments followed by an impromptu jam session using some of the instruments. The Matariki celebrations will continue with a Raranga Flax Weaving workshop scheduled for July 24 and 25, and Lisa says the first workshop was a huge success with some very interesting examples of kete completed by the end of the last day. Nga Ika o Otamatea continues until July 29 with some spectacular examples of primary student art on display. ¢

Running the Centre from home was not a good idea as we ended up with no home life because birds were being brought to us all hours of the day and night.

Getting the Centre started at Maunu was quite a challenge but after a while we finally were given some land to put buildings on. One of the very first business people to help us out was John Rosvall. Getting support like this meant so much to us both and I remember John telling us to let him know if he could do anything to help. Around the same time, we were having trouble with Telecom and Mike Daniel came to us said that he would be paying for our phone and power. That support was what we really needed and has seen the Centre grow to what it is today. The welfare of the wild birds is what the Centre is about , along with educating our young because they are our next generation.

Thank you to all who have supported us over the years. Robert and Robyn Webb. Proudly sponsored by

Hands-on experience Ruawai College year 12 geography students got to take their learning outside during their school trip to Tongariro.

Important information about trees and powerlines Trees too close to powerlines can be a danger to the public and property. Trees and other types of vegetation like bamboo and shrubs should be regularly maintained, so they do not grow into powerlines. If trees are not maintained this can cause problems in high winds and storms – it can lead to power cuts and is a potential fire risk.

A person who touches a tree that’s in contact with a powerline can get an electric shock. Power outages due to trees in powerlines cause major inconvenience to people, businesses and the community, and in some cases can also be life threatening for those who rely on electricity.

Your role in keeping trees clear of powerlines There’s a legal requirement under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 to keep your trees clear of our powerlines, to make sure they don’t affect our electricity supply or anyone’s safety. It’s your responsibility to keep trees you own trimmed and away from our powerlines. We regularly carry out tree surveys and inspect our powerlines, and we’ll do our best to let you know if your tree is getting too close to the lines. But we also need you to keep an eye out too.

If we find one of your trees is growing too close to our powerlines, we will discuss this with you or send you a notice advising what work needs to be done. Please note, this does not include the service line from our network powerlines to your property. You will need to arrange your own arborist for tree maintenance around your service line, however we can assist with arranging a free disconnection while this maintenance is underway.

p Ruawai College year 12 Geography students got hands-on research experience during their class trip to Tongariro

The class conducted field research on how climate and altitude affect vegetation growth on Mt Ruapehu, hiked through Mangatepopo Valley, visited the New Zealand National Army Museum and had a guided tour through the Waiouru Army Base. “I really enjoyed experiencing the different type of environment in the Tongariro Volcanic Centre,” said student, Alex Rope. “It was cool getting to experience the cold environment when going up Bruce Road to research, but wearing shorts probably wasn’t the best idea in the three-degree temperature.” On their first day, the students visited the Whakapapa Information Centre where they learnt about the volcanic processes, eruptions and pests in the area before travelling up Mt Ruapehu to analyse the types of vegetation and soil

characteristics at three different sites of altitude on Mt Ruapehu. They also visited Tokaanu thermal mineral pools and saw Lake Rotoaira and the Tokaanu hydroelectric power station. Students then paid a visit to the National Army Museum and had a lesson from Army Commander, Pat Hibbs, about the territory and army’s role in the area of the Tongariro Volcanic Centre. “Army Commander, Pat Hibbs gave us a first-hand tour of the base. He took us into the firing range simulator where those who are recruiting will do their practice. Pat Hibbs showed us an M4 and gave us a demonstration on how the simulator works,” said another student, Jessie Dougherty. The class finished their week-long excursion with a swim at the Turangi aquatic centre before travelling home to Dargaville. ¢

If we become aware that your tree is growing into the Growth Limit Zone, we will advise you and issue a ‘Cut or Trim’ notice, with a date by which the work must be completed by. Cutting or trimming trees near powerlines can be dangerous. For safety reasons, trees in the Growth Limit Zone can only be maintained by us or an arborist who we have approved to work near our powerlines.

We can provide you with a list of authorised contractors who can trim around our powerlines. In most cases, we will meet the reasonable costs of the first tree trimming. To arrange for the trimming of your trees or to find out whether we will meet the reasonable costs of the work, please call us first on 0800 10 40 40 or visit our website at northpower.com/contact.

The Notice Zone The Notice Zone extends one metre out from the Growth Limit Zone. If your tree is growing into The Notice Zone, we may send you a hazard warning notice advising that the tree needs trimming before it becomes a problem. You can arrange for the trimming of a tree in The Notice Zone, provided we’ve given your chosen contractor written authorisation. Please contact us at least three working days before the work begins to obtain this. We will need to know the tree location and details of when the work will be done.

Don’t get closer than 4 metres to powerlines For safety reasons it’s important to note that only Northpower or an arborist approved to work around our network can trim a tree in the Professional Only Zone within 4 metres of our lines.

Not maintaining your trees can be costly If you receive a Cut or Trim Notice from Northpower, legally you need to: 1. ensure that the tree(s) is cut or trimmed to outside The Notice Zone within the required timeframe, and 2. advise us of the time and location of the cutting or trimming of the tree at least 3 working days beforehand. It is an offence not do this and you could be fined up to $10,000 plus a further fine of up to $500 per day for a continuing offence under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003. You could also be liable for costs if our powerlines or equipment is damaged by your tree. It’s your decision whether you want to continue to maintain a tree, or have it removed. You can find out more about your options on our website at northpower.com/trees.

To report a tree hazard near our powerlines please call us on 0800 10 40 40 or northpower.com/contact You can also find further helpful information on tree maintenance in Whangarei and Kaipara districts – including the types of trees that are suitable for planting near powerlines – on our website at northpower.com/trees. Express delivery u by Andy Bryenton

Ford has made a habit in recent years of scoring points in a game, which was once considered impossible for an American car maker — creating a big hit for both sides of the Atlantic. With a Mustang that looks as good in Paris, Texas as in the French original and a truly global stable of other cars and SUVs, one of their standouts is the mid-sized sports utility called the Edge. Now it’s coming here under a different name, but nomenclature aside, it’s been worth the wait. Another marque owns the name Edge here, so Ford is debuting their newest SUV — fitting into the range above the Escape and below the seven-seater Everest — as the Endura. That’s a good name in itself, with connotations of go-anywhere toughness, and the looks of this machine live up to it well, with an aggressive stance and velocity-suggesting creases. This is by all metrics a handsome machine, with modern lines which place the Endura firmly in the forwardlooking future. Only the ST-Line diesel variant is available currently on Antipodean shores, but that’s not a problem at all, as in this form the Endura packs a frugal (under six litres to the 100km) twin-turbocharged two-litre diesel, which remains quiet and comfortable as a clever torque-vectoring four-wheel-drive system delivers power to the ground. Smooth and steady are the watchwords. Technological safety measures such as lane departure warnings, blind spot warnings, driver alertness sensors and adaptive cruise control make this one of the safest places to be on the road, which is crucial for the family-friendly role the Endura plays in the Ford lineup. Add plenty of space, both for passengers and stowage, and this modern alternative to the large station

Don’t Drink and Drive

wagon of yesteryear looks like a perfect proposition for the school-run driver or junior sports team supporter. For those who loved the Aussieassembled Ford Territory, then, the Endura could not have come sooner. Ford’s lineup of SUVs is now a complete family — from the forthcoming upgrade to the little EcoSport through to the indomitable Everest, there’s a machine for every niche and walk of life. Expect new engine options —

perhaps even a turbo-boosted V6 — in future releases, but for now, the Endura is set to change the middleweight SUV

There’s a war fought every winter, as people who love a good hot wood fire strive to keep ahead of the appetite of the fireplace. They do say that a good stack of firewood warms you twice — once when you cut it and once when you burn it. But there’s supposed to be an easy remedy for that. The real war out there in rural backyards is the war between human and chainsaw. Since this handy tool can all too often cause issues of its own as age, hard use and lack of maintenance give that small two-stroke petrol motor the temperament of a mule stung by hornets. Modern, well-maintained petrol saws are brilliant, but many people are still struggling to lift heavy, shuddering, noisy monsters, which are not just out of date, but out of oomph as well. Now there’s an option, which skips ahead to the kind of technology we’re told will power all our cars and trucks in the near future. Stihl has developed an electric, battery-powered chainsaw with comparable chain speed and grunt to their very popular small petrol saws. Better yet, wielding the MSA 140 C-BQ battery powered chainsaw is easy in five distinct ways. First, it’s light — even with the big battery — with plenty of hours work in it at full charge — this is not a heavy unit. Older folks and those not built like a traditional lumberman will appreciate being able to manoeuvre the bar easily and work for longer without strain.

MISSED FIELDAYS?

p Down to size — electric power comes of age with Stihl’s newest cordless, petrol-free chainsaw

Secondly, it’s quiet. Eerily so. Cutting through the wood all you hear is the snicker of those sharp teeth and a muted whirr. Third, we have to talk about the lack of vibration. Regular saws can shake your bones — this electric Stihl would hardly put bubbles in a can of soda, it’s rock steady. Fourth comes the price — not a bad deal at all for a powerful utility

saw, which could do duty in the backyard or around the farm. Last, but not least — there’s the fact that this machine has one big moving part in its motor. It’s simple to charge, simple to use and will be harder to break than a hammer or a spade. If your saw is the reason you’re not enjoying a roaring fire every night this winter, it’s time to embrace the future. ¢
