“We had our last meeting on May 30 where we were both gifted pounamu earrings, a taonga for our stewardship over health services,” said Debbie. Debbie was a ministerial appointment in 2007, and then served another three terms as an elected member. Libby served 12 years and said: “I wanted to join the board to increase the focus on prevention of ill health and working to reduce the disparities that things such as poor housing, health literacy and difficulties in accessing care create. “There has been a major shift in this direction over the years and some significant gains, although, in other areas, things are not much better despite best efforts. Health is complex, and I credit the CEO and management team for their implementation of this change. There is some wonderful work occurring across Northland both in primary care and in the hospitals that we can be very proud of.” Debbie continues in the role as CEO of Kaipara Community Health Trust “whose mission is to ensure appropriate and highquality health services are retained and enhanced for our community. Although you’re reading a lot about the changes, please continue to access services like the doctors as you normally would,” she says. “Changes will happen, but day-today health services will not be interrupted, so please make sure you access them when you need them.” Health Minister Andrew Little held a joint farewell with 20 DHBs across

the country. In their final task as board members, Debbie and Libby attended a digital pōwhiri on Thursday, June 23, to welcome Interim Health New Zealand CEO Margie Apa and Interim Maori Health New Zealand CEO Riana Manuel. “We were able to raise and set the challenge for improvements that are needed in Northland’s health services. Debbie’s two challenges were securing the rest of the funding to enable them to rebuild Whangārei Hospital, and the second was requesting a change in policy to remove the current roadblock of people accessing diagnostics earlier — that is,
enable other health professionals and not just specialists to refer for CT scans and MRI.” Libby added: “I am hopeful that the new national health system will improve health outcomes, especially for those who have disadvantages such as Māori, Pacific Islanders and rural communities. The northern region will have a number of localities where community voices will be sought. Keep a look out for discussions if you are keen to be part of any local input. I continue in my work as manager of a social services organisation, Jigsaw North Manaaki Whānau and my role on the Sport Northland board.” ¢

Stars align for Matariki u by Andy Bryenton
Celebrations were held across Kaipara to mark Matariki, the first day of the Māori astronomical calendar, honoured as a public holiday. Communities came together to hear the lore of the season, the significance of the star cluster’s rising in Māori culture, and to celebrate togetherness with shared feasts and festivities. While the pre-dawn

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS FUN
Outdoor adventures in Kaipara u by Emma Philips
Winter may have arrived, but the beautiful Kaipara region is still accessible for prepared adventurers. Climbing Tokatoka, walking on the beach and tramping through native bush are all great activities to fill the school holidays. Despite the colder weather, these natural attractions remain a fun day out for the whole family. Exploring during winter offers a new perspective, as vistas can be drastically changed by rain and mist. However, it is important to be prepared. Wrap up warm with layers of clothes and a beanie. The key to a fun winter walk is to be ready for any eventuality, so bring a raincoat and don’t let the weather deter you. Sturdy shoes are especially important, with many tracks being muddier during the colder months. Don’t forget to bring snacks and a drink bottle to keep hydrated and energised during winter adventures. When exploring the region, always remember a form of communication in case accidents occur. Before you head out, tell someone your intentions for the day. Another safety measure that can be taken is assembling a basic first aid kit with band-aids, hand sanitiser and insect repellent. According to the Department of Conservation, this year, there is a high likelihood of fur seals being seen on Kaipara’s west coast beaches. New Zealand shores. This year more seals have been seen, with two seals recently removed from a main road in Whangārei. Increased seal sightings are great news for the once critically endangered species. If a seal is spotted, DOC advises that people keep at least 20 metres away and never get between the animal and the ocean. It is also important that dogs are put on leashes in areas where seals are known to ‘haul out’. Encountering a seal may be an exciting event, but people are asked to resist the urge to make loud noises as this may disturb them.
If you do see a seal being harassed or attacked, don’t hesitate to call DOC on 0800 362 468. During any walks, remember to respect the environment. Leave beaches and tracks as they are found, taking any rubbish home. It is a privilege to be able to explore Kaipara, and being respectful will ensure others can also enjoy the area. Winter walks are a fun activity to undertake these school holidays. Remember to prepare for the colder weather and respect the environment and wildlife. ¢

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS FUN
Creating the stars u by Amy Fifita
There is plenty happening at Waitangi Treaty Grounds with exhibitions and cultural knowledge to offer families an experience during these school holidays. “It is free for children up to 18 with their parents or guardians. It is a good value for families to visit the Treaty Grounds,” WTG head of sales and marketing Nineke Metz says. “When they arrive, all children get a discovery trail, and there are three different age groups. That makes it
more fun to go around. Included in the entry are free guided tours and cultural performances.” It is an opportunity to have a family day out in an educational way. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a site of national significance, and houses much of New Zealand’s modern and cultural past.

On the site is the Treaty House, a carving studio, Te Whare Rūnanga and Māori waka taua — traditional war canoes. There are the new additions of the Te Kōngahu Museum and Te Rau Aroha Museum. The entrance passes are valid for two days, enabling visitors to split their time and experience between the two museums, cultural performances and guided tours. “We have the Star Waka exhibition, which is great for children because it is hands-on. It is a video about how people can make their own stars and is on until August 28.” This travelling exhibition has journeyed throughout the country at museums and started in late May. It was done by Ngā Turuturu o te Tara alongside Chris Charteris and Maureen Lander. Star makers can gift their stars for the exhibition or take them home as a keepsake. The Star Waka exhibition is in the Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi, encapsulating the past, present and future of the voyages of Aotearoa. With hanging stars above a frame of a waka. The set-up is a representation of the universe and the connection of ira atua and ira tangata — the realm of the gods and the realm of the humans. “We are running a school holiday programme in the Star Waka gallery. That is a different thing for these school holidays.
p Adult-accompanied children will be taught how to create stars at the Waitangi Treaty Ground’s school holiday programme
The school holiday programme is run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between July 11 and 22 at the Te Kōngahu Museum. All children must be accompanied by an adult, and a Waitangi Treaty Grounds educator will be in attendance. The event is free for holders of an Experience Pass and Friends of Waitangi. The Exhibition Gallery will supply resources to make stars, instructional videos and seating. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS FUN
Matariki craft takes flight u by Andy Bryenton and Emma Philips
Kites have always been part of Matariki celebrations, flown to mark the turning of the season and known in te reo Māori as manu tukutuku or manu aute. Traditionally, kites were flown for entertainment but also for more serious purposes. The use of art to connect heaven and earth cannot be underestimated at the very spiritually important time of Matariki, but the use of kites to communicate and to help predict the coming weather was also a part of pre-European Māori crafting. This Matariki weekend, the Dargaville Museum welcomed locals to come and fly kites, either in the traditional style made from harakeke and mānuka or fashioned from more modern materials. The hilltop of Pou Tu o Te Rangi and Harding Park is the perfect spot to catch a breeze while enjoying the view across the Northern Wairoa, and even though the welcoming of the star cluster has passed with season carries on. Making a kite is an easy and simple activity for the winter months. All you need is paper, string, tape and sticks. To make a classic diamond-shaped kite, first cut out a diamond shape from paper. It could be old newspaper or bright coloured paper.
of the sticks and thread a piece of string around the perimeter of the kite and through the notches. Finally, make a small cut in each of the corners of the paper diamond. Fold the edges of the paper over the string and it tape down. Extra tape may be needed to secure the sticks. Tie a long string to the intersection of the sticks and add a tail using ribbon or string and newspaper. For a reel, strong fishing nylon is never a bad substitute for conventional string.
If you have an old, small-sized rod and reel, this can also give you an easy way to bring your kite down at the end of a successful flight. Winter will likely provide ample breezes to get your creation off the ground, but a running start may be necessary. Have an adult hold your kite up high into the wind, then play out a length of string and run away from the kite, allowing it to launch up into the air. The higher it goes, the more it will catch the wind, so hold on tight. ¢
The Ultimate in School Holiday Fun!!!
p Matariki is a traditional time for kite making and flying, and though the official holiday has passed, the season is the perfect excuse to take to the air
If you are artistic, you may wish to decorate your kite with patterns. Lay two sticks across the kite in the shape of a cross. These can be either taped together or firmly bound with string. Cut the sticks to size so they do not hang over the edge of the kite. Next, cut notches on the ends

Welcoming the future
Why are District Health Boards being disestablished? Over the course of the last decade, our health system has become increasingly complex with a plethora of organisations and functions now split across national, regional and district entities, including DHBs, Primary Health Organisations, Public Health Units, shared services agencies, and other actors. This growing complexity has driven inefficiencies and has failed to address inequities in care for New Zealanders.
How will these changes improve priority services like mental health? Currently, one of the greatest barriers to improving care in priority areas such as mental health is the fragmentation of our health system. New initiatives have to be rolled out across 20 DHBs, ~ 30 Primary Health Organisations, 12 Public Health Units, and a range of supporting organisations. The complexity of this slows down, and complicates, attempts to improve services nationally. In the future system, Health NZ will be able to easily identify areas where new investment or review are needed and move rapidly to improve services, with less complexity in implementation.
How will these changes affect current health services, like my local GP and hospital? One of the greatest strengths of our health system is our skilled and dedicated workforce; this workforce will continue to care for our communities in our future health system. These reforms will not change who your local GP is, or your ability to go to your local hospital or specialist.

Taitokerau Rautaki Hauora 2040 Te Tai Tokerau Health Strategy 2040 Ko te mauri, he mea huna ki te moana The life force is hidden in the ocean We need to find a new way of doing things – that was the key message from extensive engagement across Te Tai Tokerau with communities, whānau, hapū, iwi, Ngāi Māori and health workers.
Our vision for Te Tai Tokerau is: • People live longer in good health • Have improved quality of life • and there is equity between all groups.
This vision aligns with the direction of the nation’s new health system that will achieve pae ora / healthy futures for all. Achievement of this will be measured by the ability of tamariki born today to access and achieve equitable health outcomes as adults in 2040. 2040 is significant as it also represents the two hundredth anniversary of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. ften it’s a losing battle to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage, says Murray Shaw of Prolan NZ.
“More often than not quadbikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. Therefore, it’s not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value.”
“In the NZ agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quadbike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware.
Plus agricultural fertiliser companies are also realising a coating of Prolan’s NEW Extreme product protects truck and fertiliser loader’s chassis operating in harsh environments, says Murray.
“Once Prolan Enduro medium grade is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides longterm protection. “Bikes can be waterblasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quadbike frames rust out within three years with no protection.

Masters of Metal Taking care of equine issues u by Emma Philips
Farriery is an ancient profession dating back to Roman times, with skilled craftspeople who were once essential due to the huge role horses played in everyday life. In the modern age the craft has become a rare profession; however, farriers are vital to the wellbeing of horses. Horses’ hooves grow constantly and need to be trimmed to enable the horse to work. Trimming and shoeing are vital jobs performed by farriers to maintain the health of domestic horses. Shoeing is the process of nailing a metal shoe to a horse’s hoof. It protects the hoof wall and sole. Shoes can be attached to the hoof via hot or cold shoeing. p Farriers are some of the original masters of metal, bringing safer transportation to the world in ancient times and Hot shoeing is when the shoe caring for horses to the present day is applied to the hoof while still hot to sear a smooth surface where the rasp and hoof pliers. Masters of Metal
Heavy metal reloaded u by Andy Bryenton
Metal recycling is known as a good way to help protect the environment and can even be a way to turn scrap into cash, but how does your old car become tomorrow’s new steel? Many of us have had the experience of saying goodbye to a broken-down old family car as it makes its last journey on the back of the breaker’s truck. However, few people know where all that metal goes on the rest of its voyage. Initially, of course, it’s off to a local scrap yard, where the ferrous metal is separated from other metals like copper, brass, and aluminium with the use of magnets or by hand. As steel contains a lot of iron, magnets make handling it easier. You’ll often see giant cranes and specially modified excavators in large recycling yards equipped with powerful electromagnets for this purpose. Light, soft aluminium is separated out with a conveyor-like eddy separator, which uses the tendency of the lighter aluminium to drift to the top and sides of a moving metal pile. Copper, prized for its utility in electrics, and even trace amounts of silver and gold can be gleaned
from a vehicle wreck as all the plastic, rubber and other non-metallic parts are stripped away. Next, the raw steel is subjected to the rotary chopper or grinder, a toothed device like a gigantic paper shredder. With the ability to swallow up a whole car or truck in seconds, these powerful machines turn out a harvest of chipped, broken-up steel, like the wood chips from a garden chipper. However, these fragments are destined for another stage of processing, often off-site. A large furnace with extremely high temperatures is used to melt the metal chips down into a liquid. Beyond red hot or even white-hot, this is a process now largely overseen by machines, as the intense heat makes it hard for people to come close. The molten steel is poured out and shaped by clever machinery into bars called ingots, which are the right size and shape to travel by rail or road

Five hundred million tonnes of recycled metal are used to help produce the worldwide supply of 1.3 billion tonnes of fresh steel products every year, and that number just keeps growing. Recycling Industries says that recycling metal could cut greenhouse gases by 300 million to 500 million tonnes each year. Not only this but using scrap metal instead generates 97% less mining waste and uses 40% less water. Within weeks of being sent off to recycling, parts of your old car could be back in service, perhaps as reinforcing in a new building, perhaps as cutlery or the frame of a dishwasher; the possibilities are limited only by engineers’ imaginations. ¢ • HI AB TRUCK SERVICES • 29METER REACH CAPACITY • CONTAINER STORAGE & PURCHASE
