“I was absolutely gobsmacked, I really was. It was a huge surprise and it never, ever occurred to me that this might happen,” she said when the award was announced. The citation noted Ms Nelley was CEO “of the iconic and award-winning Kauri Museum at Matakohe from 2008 until her retirement in 2014, having held various other positions with the museum since 1995. “During Ms Nelley’s 19-year involvement she developed the museum into a leading resource centre for the development of the kauri timber and gum industries in New Zealand and a key tourist attraction for Matakohe. Through daily busloads of tourists the museum has remained financially stable without council support. “She has played a key role in a project to research the history of kauri spanning thousands of years. “She has contributed to the researching and recording of stories of those from the district who fought in the First World War, helping families discover more about their family members who never returned. Ms Nelley is a member of the Rotary Club of Maungaturoto and Districts and is a past president of the Club.” Ms Nelley said she had told her son p in Vancouver and daughter in London. “They were thrilled and proud, as I knew they would be. Nothing like this has ever happened in our family. But I also know this award is for a team

p The Kaiwaka volunteer firebrigade team completed the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge, with retiree Mike Law committed to do it again a fifth time. Mike has a sick grandchild and motivated the team to compete. “It was a great day to do the challenge as it was cold and wet,” said team member Tim Brown. After another successful year of trading, Dargaville Carters which originally opened in 1968, have won the Best Small Branch in New Zealand award at the Carters Awards which recognises and celebrates excellence.

Te Kopuru president Brian Gribble said the experience has been a privilege. “I have enjoyed these years as president. It is very sad. There is a lot of history gone.” The Te Kopuru Bowling Club closed their account after settling all expenses and presented a cheque of approximately $3,484 to each of the clubs. The club rooms have been sold to the Northland Field Days association and items have been sold or donated to the community. Long-term Te Kopuru member Betty Rope remembers joining in 1959, not long after women were allowed in. “It was always a happy club and at one stage it was the best bowling green in
the north.” The funds received will go towards maintenance for the greens and the club houses. Mamaranui president James Nyssen said they may invest in some young stock to help with the maintenance costs and are glad to be gaining a few new members. Mr Gribble said a special thanks to Te Kopuru treasurer Marie Birkenhead, in his farewell speech, for the extra work she has had to put in during the closing of the club. “I hope you will all continue to keep in contact with each other over the years to come. “Whether it be on the bowling green or in some other way.” ¢
Staff member Simon Parkinson was also nominated for the Continuous Improvement award. Mark Kapa, branch manager, has been in the role for one year. Originating from Pouto, his experience includes owning his own house building company prior to having the opportunity to move into the management position with Carters building supplies. “My staff are a hard working team and deserve this award, I couldn’t have walked into a better branch,” says Mark. “They go above and beyond in customer service and are professional. Their experience and expertise certainly helps make this branch the
success it is. They are here before the gates open and after they close, that shows me their commitment to the workplace.” Store services manager, Janice Williams has worked with the branch for more than 14 years, and says she enjoys the variety of the job, and working with the clients. “We enjoy working alongside those in the building industry and we are always learning from the builders,” she said. “Our branch staff culture is very friendly and supportive, not just in the workplace, but through life events. We plan to keep on track and keep going the extra mile for our customers.” ¢

The competition takes place on July 24 and 25 and is open to all theatre groups in the region. Last year Dargaville Little Theatre performed The Memoirs, written by Deborah Steele, which took them to the Nationals in Wellington. “The local competition was held at Otamatea Repertory Theatre. We had a different stage space, lighting and sound system to what we were used to which was interesting. It was a bit of a nail biting week because they don’t announce the winners immediately,” said member Eryn Wilson-Collins. “It was a good experience because you get to meet other thespians and see other productions. “We are looking forward to having a variety of acts for people to see. The shows are open to the public and we encourage anyone to come along. They will be really interesting evenings.
“Judges read the script and then speak to the audience and cast members after the performance to give feedback. It is all about learning.” Contestants get the chance to write, perform or direct and receive in depth verbal and written critique. Each entry must have at least two people, be 15 minutes long and be part of Theatre New Zealand. Those who make it through to the regional finals from the Upper North Island will perform in Te Kuiti. Finalists then travel to Hamilton to take part in the Nationals. Dargaville Little Theatre is encouraging performers wanting to join them to audition on Sunday, June 4 from 4pm at the Little Theatre. Kate Cotching has every reason to smile — she is playing the lead role of Alice in Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s major musical production, ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Even though Kate has only just turned ten, she has already been in two major musicals for ORT. This is her first one with a starring role. A keen and gifted singer, Kate was runner-up at the Northland Performing Arts Festival in the junior section, in 2014. Lewis Carroll’s children’s classic, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, turns 150 this year. For a century and a half, it has delighted and puzzled us in equal measure. At the beginning of last year we had just nine students, now we have 29, meaning we can hire another full time teacher on a permanent contract,” said principal Wayne Steele. “With a staff of six, the school is moving forward. More people are relocating into the area who have realised there is a lot of stability at the school and we have a lot to offer the community. “They have decided to bring their children to a rural school to let them enjoy the benefits, which they possibly wouldn’t get elsewhere.

“We have a low teacher to student ratio, enough technical devices for each child to use personally, and of course we are in a rural setting,” he said. He says the students get to explore and experience different things. They build huts, climb trees, play rugby and have adventures out on the grounds. “Our teachers are great and our pupils also enjoy inter school sports days, they take part in the Northern Wairoa cross country events, school trips and other activities that come up. Last year, New Zealand’s three Ronald McDonald Houses provided a home away from home to over 3,500 families with sick children and their National appeal day is Friday June 5.

Competitors hailed from a range of schools in the area including Tinopai, Matakohe, Paparoa and the Otamatea Christian School. Students spoke about what Anzac day means to them, how the families at home managed and told stories of family members that fought. Ruawai residents Adam Barlow and Eloise Barlow and their oldest son Israel are participating in the annual street appeal for the second year. “We do it because we lost our son Elijah in February 2013 and it is a practical way we can honour his memory while still supporting and giving back to Ronald McDonald House — a place that we were very familiar with,” said Eloise. Nurse Jessica Hackett will soon be exchanging her Dargaville Medical Centre scrubs for a nurse’s uniform at King Faisal Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The 26-year-old will depart in early September to work as an emergency nurse for one year. It will be her first time travelling overseas and she hopes it will be her ‘gateway to seeing the rest of the world’. “I’m looking forward to experiencing a different culture and learning Arabic.” As a predominantly Muslim country, women must adhere to a strict dress code, be accompanied by a male guardian when in public and are forbidden to drive. “I think it’s probably one of the most different cultures you could live in,” she says. The placement is organised through a nurses
recruitment agency based in Ireland. Jessica applied for King Faisal Hospital as she has a friend who works in the emergency department, and says generally nurses are placed where ever they are best suited. Born and bred in Dargaville, Jessica studied to be a nurse three years ago, going on to work in the emergency department in Whangarei Hospital, before taking a job in her home town. “Initially everyone gets into nursing to help people. “It is such a cool career and you can do some really amazing things with it,” she says, “and this opportunity will be just one of them.” ¢

The Air Training Corps in Dargaville is a community organisation run by trained volunteers for youth aged 13–18. They provide safe, enjoyable and challenging opportunities within a military framework. The 57 Squadron Dargaville ATC has been parading since 1941. Flying officer Rhonda Gilligan has been involved since 2010, and became unit commander this year. “The NZ Cadet Forces train the officers, including strategies in effective leadership,” she said. “The cadets gain NZQA credits for participating and this is the only youth organisation to offer this. “The youth can work their way through the ranks and progress to become officers. We do target shooting once a month and we have flying days with instruction from the Dargaville Aero Club.” Bushcraft is another important aspect for cadets. They also compete with other units, with the skills they learn. “It’s not about winning or losing, but about growing as young adults and having experiences in a controlled and safe environment. Every year we participate in Anzac day activities

and this year we provided cenotaph duty, which was a huge honour as we had never been involved in such a capacity before and the experience was invaluable.” Sixteen year old Monique Flood has been in the ATC for four years and joined because she is interested in the Armed Forces as a career. “I decided to join to
get a taste of what it is like in the forces. I enjoy the discipline and you learn about respect and integrity towards others and the community,” she said. “I definitely recommend others try it. There are senior and junior leaders courses, and we learn alot. You can travel overseas for cadet exchanges, it is really interesting.” ¢

At present Northpower is in the process of performing comprehensive maintenance on two of its generators, one of 1916 vintage and one of 1940. These generators will be good for another 50 years or more. The Wairua Power Station construction commenced in 1913 by the Dominion Portland Cement Company, later to become Wilsons (NZ) Portland Cement Company Limited in 1918. The station was completed and commissioned in September 1916. In 1914, during construction, the engineers decided to make provision for four generators. In 1916 when the station was completed they had only installed two. The generator’s output was approximately 2mW. Another two generators have been installed, one in 1940 and the other by Northpower in 2007. Generators 1 and 2 were upgraded to 1.2mW in 1995 by Northpower and with the addition of the new generator in 2007, raised the output of Wairua. With G1, G2 and G3s output being 3.6mW and the additional 1.5mW from G4 the station now has an output on 5.1mW. Wairua is what is termed as a “run of the river” power station. We can only generate with rain that falls in the catchment area which is Hikurangi, Puhipuhi and Glenbervie. This travels to station via the Wairua River. During the winter months there is sufficient water to keep the four generators running for around six months. During the summer months it’s the perfect opportunity for maintenance on the station complex that covers an area of approximately three kilometres.

Ease of access to the great outdoors is unparalleled here, with a mild climate, great fishing, lakes, forests and other natural attractions. They say that the oldies are the goodies — and the golden era of Hollywood certainly provides a rich seam of cinematic gems for a forthcoming Dargaville Rotary film festival to mine.
When most folks take an overseas holiday, work is the last thing on their mind. But when Don and Rose from Dargaville’s Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee restaurant plan their forthcoming trip to Rose’s old homeland, the flavours of the Thai tradition will rank right up there with the sights and sounds. Thailand has a varied culinary tradition, with interesting spices, sauces, vegetables and fruits sometimes rarely seen here in New Zealand. A stand out is the spiked and pungent durian, a football-sized fruit which is bright yellow, falls from immensely tall trees in the

Dishes we know and love, such as hot and spicy noodles or satay chicken, meet even more exotic flavours from the mountainous northeast, where Thailand borders on Laos. This trip will last a month, covering everything from kitchens and street food to temples and museums. The pair plan to bring back new inspiration for their highly regarded local restaurant, reconnecting with the ancient as well as the modern stands of Thailand’s vibrant culinary culture. ¢

Breach of banking code costs bank millions Australian customers and small businesses taking on their banks over rip-offs have won a massive boost after a landmark court ruling in the Australian Victoria State Supreme Court that requires financial institutions to stick to their own code of conduct. The precedent setting judgment will cost the National Australia Bank Limited millions of dollars and has sparked a scramble from the banking industry as it means the banking code of conduct goes from being a guide to contractually binding. The National Australia Bank suffered the defeat in court after it tried to argue that the industry’s self regulatory code of conduct has no legal effect. It is ironic that our own New Zealand banks also claim that their code of banking practice is voluntary and is also not legally binding. Australian Supreme Court Judge Justice James Elliott has ruled that the banking code has contractual force and because the National Australia Bank breached it, the bank could not recoup $6 million in loan guarantees for a series of Gold Coast property investments. The judgment means that the National Australia Bank cannot enforce the guarantees made by Mr Rose. This judgment places a spotlight, not only on
the Australian banking code of practice but also on the New Zealand Bankers Association code of banking practice, as New Zealand Court decisions commonly follow Australian Court decisions, and those of Canada and the United Kingdom. Farmers of New Zealand support the New Zealand code of banking practice becoming enforceable in New Zealand law. It is not good enough for banks to simply hide behind the code of banking practice, claiming it is a voluntary agreement based on goodwill and intentions. The majority of New Zealand banks are owned by Australian banks, therefore the New Zealand banking code of practice should become legally enforceable in New Zealand where they operate and enjoy ever increasing profits. Farmers of New Zealand also support the re-introduction into Parliament of the Farm Debt Mediation Bill which, in the past, has not been supported by
the vast majority of politicians. While in New Zealand the number of bank foreclosures has declined, economists warn that those who currently have extended themselves in taking out mortgage loans could be exposed in the next New Zealand economic downturn, which may not be too far away if the Auckland real estate market funded by overseas immigrants crashes. New Zealand Institute of Economic Research said even when mortgage sale numbers were high during the global financial crisis, New Zealand did not have the same default rate as the United States, where homeowners could “post back their keys” if property values collapsed. The reality is that you can’t walk away from your mortgage in New Zealand. Most farm mortgagee sales end up with the farming families losing their livelihoods and all of their possessions. ¢
