“A local beekeeper gifted the school our own hives, and he has been helping the children discover the importance of the honey bee,” says office administrator Kirsty Jessop. “We have our own native bush with manuka and kanuka as well as our own orchard with a variety of apples, pears, peaches and oranges. “The senior students are proud to be the kaitiaki, which means the guardians of our school bees and environment. “The bees collect the pollen from the orchard and native bush block. The beekeeper helps them with the practical process of collecting the honey. They extract it from the hive, and he takes the honey and processes it ready for them to decanter it into the sterilised jars for sale. “They also design the labels themselves. The whole venture has given them a tremendous understanding of the economics of running a business. It certainly helps with maths and has shown them that hard work pays off as the whole process is not that easy. “They have learned about the native trees and their names. We have been lucky to receive council grants for the children to maintain the bush block. “The combination of manuka, kanuka and clover, which the bees love the nectar from makes a really tasty honey. The pupils have just decanted their 2020 lots of honey, which they sell in half-kilogram and one-kilogram jars at a very reasonable price.”

DAIRY FARMERS

p Tangiteroria School children are hands-on when it comes to maintaining the school beehives

The school uses the funds raised from honey sales to purchase jars, print the labels and buy beekeeper suits. “We also buy equipment we need to help learn about the environment. The children absolutely thrive on the experience, and it gives them a real sense of pride. “The knowledge they have gained includes learning about the queen bee, discovering honey is a natural anaesthetic and that it is a replacement for sugar that can be used in many things. The hives are an ongoing project,

and the children have certainly come to appreciate how bees work together, how important they are for the environment and the working operations of a hive. “It is our local curriculum promoting environmental science through meaningful learning opportunities both indoors and out. The students maintain the hives with our local beekeeper on a regular basis, and we really appreciate his input. “To purchase the honey, contact the school office or check the Tangiteroria School Facebook page.” ¢

p Junior students from Dargaville’s St Joseph’s Primary School get stuck in with practical experiments as they engage with the science curriculum ahead of a major school science fair. Air-powered rockets, bouncing eggs, balloon ziplines and captive tornadoes were all part of the fun. However, there’s a serious side to the colourful, creative projects; establishing the basics of physics and teaching the scientific method of enquiry. Future engineers, problem solvers and inventors are being made here.

p It was a landmark day for the Dargaville RSA, as four members of the organisation celebrated a major milestone last week and a new patroness stepped up to assist in the leadership. Despite the old adage about a gentleman never asking a lady’s age, Tui Franklin, Fay Brown, Peg Coles and Dot Adolph may forgive us for revealing that they are all celebrating 90 years, with birthdays in 1930. This nonagenarian celebration (complete with a suitably large cake for four) was accompanied by the adoption of the role of patroness by Mabel Walton, who succeeded longserving and well-respected RSA member Betty Rope in the role. RSA members of all ages attended the quadruple birthday, as the club enjoys a return to life without Covid restrictions and welcomes new participants.

There are about 500 stars in the cluster, but only six are visible from the naked eye. How Matariki is celebrated varies between iwi. While some celebrate when the star cluster first rises during May/June, others will celebrate at the first full moon or new moon after the rising of Matariki. Today, Matariki is more commonly celebrated at the first new moon after the rising of Matariki.”

Tip protest checks submissions u by Paul Campbell

The Fight the Tip movement protesting the landfill plan for Auckland rubbish in the Dome Valley, in a catchment for the Hoteo River, which feeds into the Kaipara Harbour, has new concerns about Auckland Council’s submission processes. Council recently agreed to extend submissions on the Waste Management proposal to dump tonnes of waste into the landfill, after criticism that only allowed online submissions during the Covid-19 lockdown emergency. There were widespread concerns that too many rural people were not fully conversant with computer processes for a comprehensive review of opinions. Now, FTT says after checking a list of submitters to the proposed plan change to allow the tip some appear “to have gone missing” during the process. “Some big hitters are saying no or imposing significant amendments to the proposal,” said FTT executive member Michell Carmichael, “Kaipara District Council, Ngati Whatua, Ngati Manuhiri, the Department

of Conservation, Forest and Bird, Watercare and Federated Farmers, et cetera. “Listen up council, your community, iwi and responsible organisations are sending a clear message. “This proposal is not in the best interests of the people or the environment.” The protest movement has grown to include the support of Ngati Whatua, with links to iwi across a wide area of Kaipara and wider Northland and a protest march, or hikoi, to the steps of Auckland Council in the city’s CBD is planned for July 17. Details, including safety and traffic management, were still being worked on at print time. It is understood Auckland Council is soon to acknowledge submissions it has received, which FTT says will identify any that have not been logged in.

Firefighters adopt new tech u by Andy Bryenton

New mobile technology is helping firefighters keep track of events when an emergency unfolds, allowing faster response times and more certainty for commanding officers in the field. Students experience gold u by Ann van Engelen

Tangowahine school pupils were treated to a visit from 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medal hockey player Ella Gunson last week.

p Students at Tangowahine School with Commonwealth Games hockey player Ella Gunson and Jena Huntington from Hockey Northland Small Sticks

“Our term has been good settling back into systems and routines. It was a short term two but long with remote learning. Our parents were amazing, we put ideas and opportunities out there, and they made sure the children were comfortable and came back in a very good state,” says principal Huw Wainwright. “Ella came along with Jena Huntington from Hockey Northland Small Sticks to our hockey training. Jena has given our students four free lessons, and the organisation supplied us with new equipment including 30 hockey sticks and balls as we are in the part payment scheme. “Ella also competed at the London Olympic Games. Having her bring along her gold medal really encouraged the

children that they can aim high and achieve great things. The students think having Ella come along to training was awesome. She was very inspirational and brought lots of smiles and delight to the students as she shared her knowledge. “We have had Olympians visit our school before, and we find having female role models is really valuable. They show that sport doesn’t have to be male-dominated and there are opportunities if you are willing to put in the time and effort. “We are using the hockey equipment on a daily and weekly basis with sports activities. “We are so grateful to have received their help and for our school to get such great opportunities.” ¢

Private plan change

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

The newspaper you now hold in your hands is not the only Lifestyler you will receive, free of charge, in your letter box this week. As the region grows, your local newspaper is expanding and changing to meet the public’s needs.

The 130-hectare, town-redefining development of Mangawhai Central has received a new information webpage from the Kaipara District Council to clarify the process and purpose of a so-called private plan change, necessary for the development to go ahead as envisioned by developers.

It means that Friday, July 3 will mark the beginning of a new chapter for both us and you, our readers. The Weekend Lifestyler will arrive on that date and each Friday after, fulfilling the desire among our readership for a ‘magazine’ type in-depth weekend read. Integrity Community Media Managing Director Allan Mortensen says that the choice to forge ahead with business expansion plans after the recent Covid-19 lockdown was a natural one. “We, like many local businesses in the Kaipara, have come through the lockdowns to a time of uncertainty. We don’t believe in the word ‘recession’, as it’s a concept that can only come about through panic and lack of confidence. The remedy does not sit with either central or local government, but with the communities throughout New Zealand. “We deal with many thousands of customers on a weekly basis, and the majority of feedback we are receiving is: ‘well that’s Covid-19 dealt with, now let’s get back to business’. With that in mind, we decided to tick a project off our ‘things to do’ list and launch The Weekend Lifestyler. We are now more pleased than ever to be able to bring stories of success to our readers, and

connect an enthusiastic customer base with our advertisers to strengthen local business.” At the same time, Integrity has invested in digital technology to put both editions online each week, for those who wish to browse our district’s news and events via electronic means. That will further expand the reach of both publications, while also adding substantial value to our advertisers and more accessibility for readers to enjoy our blend of news, views and entertainment. ¢

Wood St revitalisation funds announced Current and future crop suitability in It’s a big win for the Wood Street revitalisation project – Waka Kaipara – Understand the research Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has awarded a grant to Kaipara District Council as part of its Innovating Streets programme and pilot fund. The programme supports councils to deliver more vibrant and people-friendly public spaces by employing ‘tactical urbanism’. The grant will fund 90 percent of an interim treatment that will inform a permanent future upgrade in Wood Street. Using a ‘tactical urbanism’ approach, the Council has been collaborating with the Mangawhai Business Association and community and testing layout and design to create a more people-friendly Wood Street. The funds mean that the Council can continue co-designing with the Mangawhai community to further finetune a permanent solution. Further design workshops with the community will be held over the next two months. Dates and details will be found at mangawhaicommunityplan.co.nz/projects/transport.

Midwinter time to share u by Andy Bryenton

Traditionally Matariki, the mid-winter festival of the Maori celestial calendar, is a time to share the bounty of the earth. What better way to share good feelings right now than to organise a free hangi lunch for essential service workers who have helped us all through Covid lockdown? That was the idea and the inspiration when the pupils at Te Kopuru School were tasked with coming up with a suitable way of expressing some gratitude at this traditionally generous time of year. According to their teachers and principal Lee Anderson, the whole school pitched in with the preparations. That meant digging a huge hangi pit, which was then bailed out by undaunted students after an overnight downpour. Rocks were heated in the timep Students at Te Kopuru School showed their gratitude to honoured method as the kids essential service workers with a giant Matariki hangi, assisted in preparing enough prepared by the school children themselves food to nourish a small army. That army was assembled from among to those who have gotten us through the essential care workers, emergency Covid,” said Ms Anderson. service people and other community The sight of an entire hall filled with volunteers. When the covers came off grateful and very well-fed children, and the tables laid out, the school hall parents, teachers and volunteers fits was filled with the unmistakable smoky well with the school’s official title, and scent of hangi and also a tangible sense with its kaupapa. Te Kopuru School of pride at a job well done. is, after all, known in te reo as Ko Te “This was an initiative, which the Whare Whakapiri Tuhono O Nga Tangata students have been right behind. Council survey reveals limited impact u by Andy Bryenton

An extensive survey of Kaipara residents conducted by the Kaipara District Council as part of their post-Covid-19 assessment has given the region a healthy prognosis for recovery and future growth. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the KDC established a Taskforce for Economic Support and Recovery. To understand the situation, a survey questionnaire was distributed to the community. The survey was open between Tuesday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 29. In total — 457 people responded to the survey. Perhaps the most startling revelation from the survey data is that only 10 per cent of respondents claim to have been significantly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic ramifications. A substantial 46 per cent claim that there has been no effect in their financial circumstances. That augurs well for business owners, who make up the majority of those significantly affected. With a customer base still quietly confident, the outlook for continued revenue is good. Frame

this with information delivered to the Dargaville Community Development Board by analysis experts Marketview: “It was another good week of growth, with spend up 7.23%, and transactions up a marginal 0.12%. Foot traffic may not have grown much from the same week last year, but those out and about sure are doing their bit to prop up the economy. Spend continues to be concentrated on recreation and home-related store types.” These broad trends may be for all of New Zealand, but with local data from the council survey confirming that 70 per cent of respondents agree that the Covid crisis will not affect their long-term job or career, and recent reports in the national news focussing on empty shelves from slow imports rather than empty wallets, the outlook is less tentative by the day.

The Wellsford Lions Roaring Truck Show that was held by the Wellsford Lions Club in February raised donations for the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service with funds presented to general manager Vanessa Furze last week.

Medical professionals, educators, emergency services and drug counsellors all acknowledge the problem of meth in our communities. It’s an addictive drug, which snares individuals from all walks of life and all backgrounds. Now, a new initiative is successfully helping people break free.

“As we are reliant on donations from the community, to receive $10,000 from the Wellsford Lions Roaring Truck Show was wonderful,” says Ms Furze. “We appreciate the time and effort that goes into organising events of this scale and are forever grateful to the organisers, sponsors, par ticipants and the general public. Wild weather lashes Kaipara

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Friday’s extreme weather event did more than douse the Kaipara with much-needed rainfall. It was also the catalyst for a tornado, which ripped through Mangawhai at 4pm, shocking locals who caught the funnel cloud on video. The twister, one of four that touched down across an area spanning Mangawhai in the north to Auckland in the south, was rated as one of the smallest of its type on the international scale. However, it was still able to carve a swathe through the Cove Road area before dissipating among the gathering thunderheads. Roofing iron, trees and shrubs and window glass all fell prey to the tornado, which appeared to reform and collapse several times. Elsewhere, torrential rain and thunderstorms reduced traffic on State Highway One through Kaiwaka and the Topuni-Te Hana area to a crawl, with visibility reduced to mere metres. Shock power outages were experienced by many homes and businesses as lightning hit, and streams, rivers and culverts became torrents.

In Maungaturoto, a civic-minded motorist waved traffic to a stop following the bursting of a roadside culvert before the Whakapirau turnoff, explaining that his 4x4 had almost failed to navigate through the resulting flood. Delayed vehicles waited for the torrent to subside, while big SUVs and V8s dared to plough through. Meanwhile, it was a nervous night for Paparoa residents as the stream adjacent to the town’s main street rose rapidly with fast-flowing water. Sheets of running water, some carrying foliage and debris, washed across the state highway in places, creating dangerous driving conditions. With the unusually savage weather blown over by Saturday, residents were left to pick up the pieces from the tornado strike, and consider the possible silver lining of the storms; relief for the region’s low water levels following summer’s drought.

Time for a fresh celebration? u by Andy Bryenton

Matariki is the time of the Maori calendar when the star cluster known as the ‘seven sisters’ or the Pleiades becomes visible over the winter horizon, heralding the start of a new year. It’s traditionally a time of appreciating ones’ blessings, gathering with family, and planning for the months ahead. However, should it become a public holiday? Our prime minister says she’s not ruling out the idea of a Matariki holiday, especially seeing as the current calendar misses two very important points. The first is the ‘great holiday desert’, which spans the worst and wettest months of the year in New Zealand. Many of our existing holidays such as Queen’s Birthday or Labour Day fall well outside the gruelling slog of a long and holidayfree winter, when a break would be gladly accepted. Secondly, while other nations celebrate the sovereign’s birthday, the 40-hour week, the anniversary of their founding or the sacrifice and heroism of war veterans, only New Zealand would boast Matariki as a red-letter day on the calendar. Tourism operators opine that it could be our own cultural festival, in the same way, that people travel to witness Holi in India, the Hoi An Lantern Festival in Vietnam or China’s Dragon Boat Festival. Fun fact; India’s ‘festival of colours’ is where we get the term ‘holiday’ from, literally, the day of Holi. Opponents of the concept cite the stresses and strains placed on traditional business missing a Monday or Friday, the disruption to schooling, and the added surcharges restaurants and cafes would have to charge to retain staff on a public break. Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has expressed opposition to the idea of a Matariki holiday on these financial and economic grounds and is supported by

many business organisations outside of tourism. While the debate continues, celebration of Matariki grows in popularity, with community events all over the country coinciding with the appearance of the ‘seven sisters’ in our skies. An excuse to gather with loved ones, enjoy a feast (preferably a traditional hot winter hangi) and count one’s blessings at the turn of the seasons is not to be missed, after all. Perhaps the final decision on this new winter’s holiday should be sent to

Metal masters’ monster machines u by Andy Bryenton

With technology all around us utilising metal, it’s hard to comprehend the fact that a large proportion of the western world’s biggest and most powerful machines all owe their existence to just two massive factories in the United States. For decades, the military, aeronautical and space-faring might of that nation relied on a pair of colossal machines, situated in Ohio and Massachusetts. It all began with the observation during the second world war that the German Air Force was churning out aeroplanes made with pressed magnesium components. Magnesium is a light but brittle metal, hard to rivet and hammer, but able to be pressed out into complex shapes while hot, using a machine called a closed die press. These large hydraulic engines squeeze a sheet of superheated metal into a mould like play dough, creating parts with no seams or weak points. As the war drew to a close, US and Soviet troops rushed to capture the factories that had developed this new technology. The Russians grabbed the biggest German press, along with plans for a monster able to exert 50,000 tons of pressure. The Americans, fearing being left behind, commissioned 10 similar-sized engines for their own use.

AUTO

Rolling through the years u by Andy Bryenton

It’s five decades ago this year that the New Zealand Motor Company opened their doors, bringing some of the highest and lowest points of British design and auto engineering to our shores. At their peak, this Kiwi firm employed more than 3,000 workers across four factories and 40 retail dealers. In the days before the common market in Europe, the end of trade protectionism and the dawn of the Japanese import boom, British Leyland reigned supreme, battling Ford, Holden and Chrysler with a range that featured everything from the gorgeous Jaguar XJ6 to everyman’s runabouts like the Morris Marina. As noted, the Leyland range comprised some of the best cars to ever go on to classic status. However, they also brought out cars that have become long-running sources of humour, like the Austin Allegro with its square steering wheel and reverse aerodynamics. That was because the monolithic Leyland was a conglomerate of many, many British marques all helmed by one board of directors. So it was that New Zealand Motors, with its still widely recognised ‘twin rollers and sheet metal’ logo, turned out a range so varied by modern standards. Hits like the Triumph 2500 and the Land Rover were balanced by misses like the Austin Princess. However, it’s worth noting that even the less powerful, more quirky machines of the time still have their fans and collectors today. Large factories in Panmure and Newmarket served Auckland, while Petone and Nelson also kept putting new tyres on our roads from the 70s onward. Many expatriate Brit parents used these

cars for the school run in brand new Kiwi suburbs. The demise of Leyland worldwide was a precursor to the implosion of Detroit and heralded the rising sun of Japanese car dominance for the late 80s and early 90s. A series of crippling industrial disputes wracked the Brit HQ, while new cars were underdeveloped and lacked the reliability of their Japanese counterparts. Honda took over many of the NZMC production lines as Muldoon’s government, and then Roger Douglas changed the economic landscape. In the end, it just wasn’t economical to make British post-war autos halfway around the world. One saving grace, however,

is that examples made here by the NZMC were considered to be superior in build quality to many built on English production lines. As such, there’s plenty of enjoyment to be had in owning a ‘proper Kiwi classic’, if you can find an unmolested example from the heyday of the NZ Motor Company’s history. ¢
