Mark and Kylie Stanaway from Ruawai won the awards dairy category and the other finalists for the area who made the top ten in their category were: Lou and Maureen Downey from Dargaville, Douglas Conn, Dargaville, Rex Roadley from Maungaturoto, Tania and Innes Anderson from Kaiwaka, Evan and Michelle Wright from Mangawhai Heads, Bruce Robertson, Maungaturoto, and Nigel Hart from Ruawai. “The awards were established last year to recognise suppliers who consistently supply quality stock to meet consumers’ needs,” said Silver Fern Farms communications manager

Justin Courtney. The top 10 suppliers in the Upper North Island across lamb, prime beef, deer, dairy stock, and bulls were invited to the Dargaville Silver Fern Farms plant. Farmers are judged across stock processed during the 2014 calendar year. The criteria considers livestock and farm data covering specification, direct supply, Farm Assurance eligibility, supplier shareholding, involvement in supply programmes, supply volume and timing and FarmIQ involvement. “The standard across the farmers in the region is extremely high. Our farmers take great care with their stock and

systems to ensure they supply to the specifications required for high quality red meat products,” said Mr Courtney. “It’s fair to say the margins between the top suppliers were within a handful of marks, and there are many others who only just missed out on making the top ten this year.” “We’re pleased we could recognise their expertise as we’re very proud of what they do each day — their efforts are a crucial part of why consumers like Silver Fern Farms products.” The overall Plate to Pasture Award winner will receive a trip for two to visit a key overseas market.

Pioneers honoured u by Ann Morgan

Te Ha Oranga Mobile Nursing Services celebrated their original beginnings and the progress they have made over the years with a ceremony to respect the pioneers of the organisation at their recent Kuia Kaumatua Feedback hui.

p The older generation gather to appreciate the work accomplished by the founders of Te Ha Oranga services

A gathering of nearly 50 kuia/ kaumatua and staff blessed newly placed photo’s of four prominent kaumatua — Wati Tito, Hughie Nathan, Phillip Hutchinson and Maiti Nathan. A memorial wall of photo’s of kuia that were connected to Te Ha Oranga over the years who have passed on is also on display. “A tokotoko — ceremonial stick, representing authority and symbolism of the men and all they accomplished, acknowledging their status in the organisation is placed between the four photo’s,” said operations manager Rhonda Zielinski-Toki.

Minister Rex Nathan gave a mihimihi — speech, there was a time of karakia and waiata — prayer and song, and stories were told of days-gone-bye. The event ended with a shared lunch and social time. “It is important to us and our senior community to acknowledge how far we have come and to thank those who worked so hard to get us where we are today. “The Kuia Kaumatua Feedback hui is an opportunity for clients of the service to provide valuable honest feedback to us which helps us improve the quality of our service.” ¢

Quilts on display u by Ayla Miller

Bright fabrics and friendly faces will be on display this June 23-27 at Fosters Arcade, Victoria Street, Dargaville where The Dargaville Quilters will hold their ‘memories and milestones’ themed quilt show.

p Ernie has added a new masterpiece to his display of memorabilia at The Kumara Box in Dargaville. A couple donated a bike in much need of restoration so the challenge went out for creativity. Ernie fixed and rust proofed it, and Lyn Miers, president of The Northern Wairoa Cake Decorators Club took up the challenge. “It took her a month, crocheting and using up all her spare wool in between her normal busy schedule,” said Ernie. “The bike is now on display and I am very grateful for Lyn’s amazing achievement.”

A glimpse of war in our waters u by Ann Morgan

Trees traded for trash

u by Ann Morgan

An elephantine recycling effort has earned Kaipara school children 97 trees to plant in their neighbourhood.

The Mangawhai Museum is marking the 75th anniversary of the Niagara sinking on Saturday June 20 from 4-6pm, with a special presentation at the museum by Tutukaka author of ‘Deepwater Gold’, Keith Gordon. “Few people realise how close World War II came to New Zealand, 75 years ago this month. German mines laid across the approaches to the Auckland Harbour sank the luxury passenger liner ‘Niagara’ and led to the deepest salvage of gold bullion the world had ever known,” said museum manager Emma Gray. On the evening of June 13 1940, 228 mines were placed in deep water between Whangarei Heads and Great Barrier Island, by the German raider Orion, disguised as a merchant vessel. On June 19, the Niagara, with 351 passengers and crew, was the first casualty of the minefield. This was the first enemy action in New Zealand waters during World War II, and the first sinking of the war in the Pacific. Keith has been involved with the shipwreck since 1989, when the first dives on the wreck were undertaken by Keith’s remotely-operated underwater robot vehicle. His illustrated talk will cover the history of the Niagara. Tickets are available at $20, which is supported by a special exhibition in the

The trees have been distributed through the national Paper4trees school programme, which encourages schools to recycle paper and cardboard. The programme measures recycling volumes and offers native plants as an incentive to participants. “Our records show Kaipara students diverted more than 32 tonnes of paper and cardboard away from landfills last year,” said Paper4trees manager Hope Lawsen. “In weight terms, that’s equivalent to five adult male elephants, it’s a lot of paper that can be turned into new products. Despite a roll of less than 20 children, they managed to recycle enough to receive 14 free plants, our second highest delivery for the day.” Babylon Coast Gardens donated the 97 trees earned by 11 Kaipara district schools. “We are proud to supply native plants to such a great programme,” said Lorraine Bright. Rural day at Carters

A different side of history

Carters Dargaville are hosting a rural/farmers open day on site at the branch on Normanby St, on Friday, June 19 from 12.30pm.

u Review — By Ayla Miller

Platform Thirteen’s production of Everybody’s Reading Room, somersaults viewers back in time to 20th century Dargaville, when attitudes were staunch and New Zealand was at war. Written by Sheri O’Neill and directed by Alister Williams, the play is inspired by true events and takes place during the First World War. It tells the story of Arthur Grace, a draper, quaker and conscientious objector tired of the small town enthusiasm for the war that surrounds him and he pens his frustrations in the form of a play whilst conducting a passionate affair with a theatre actress. The audience must concentrate to keep up, but in doing so they are rewarded with an intelligent performance which educates without lecturing, uncoincidentally what Arthur Grace aimed to do with his own script.

The complex story is told through confident acting, seamless lighting and musical additions, smart costumes and clever lines. Lizzie Carroll-Thom deserves a special mention for her performance as the docile and loyal Marion Grace. Her convincing performance is enhanced by the fact she grew up in the same area of England as the character she plays and speaks with authentic gentle tones. Although set 100 years ago, the themes and internal conflicts will resonate with today’s audience, and are especially timely as we commemorate a century since WW1. Audience members are urged to re-evaluate the concept of war and decide, as Arthur Grace says, what is right and what is wrong. The R13 production will leave viewers pondering Mr Grace’s words long after they leave the theatre. Having played Dargaville and Maungaturoto, the remaining performances can be seen at the Capitaine Bougainville Theatre in Whangarei on June 13 and 14. ¢

Birthday bash for museum Window dressing u by Ayla Miller

From humble beginnings in a stable, the Dargaville Museum has come a long way and will be celebrating 30 years since officially opening at Harding Park with a birthday bash on Sunday, July 5.

u by Ann Morgan

The Dargaville Business Forums Beautification subcommittee is holding a window dressing tips and tricks workshop at The Central Hotel on Thursday, June 11 at 5.30pm.

p Karen from Fosters with an example of her window displays p Dargaville Museum’s vice president Raewyn Sills and president Don Elliot with the plaque commemorating the Museum’s official opening at Harding Park

Dargaville Museum manager Pene McKenzie says the day will be fun filled for everyone with old fashioned games, bread making, hand-crafts and gum scraping. The museum began in stables belonging to Mr Joseph McMullen Dargaville, on what is now known as Norfolk Court. After a few changes of location, the museum finally settled into a purpose built building at Harding Park, after being taken over by the Northern Wairoa

Maori, Maritime and Pioneer Society Inc. These premises were officially opened by Governor General Sir David Beattie in 1985. “We would like to encourage everyone to come along and support this event and 30 years of preserving Dargaville’s history,” said Pene. The day begins at 10am and runs until 4pm with free entry and children are encouraged to enter the Crazy Hat competition. There will be raffles, a quiz, live music and hot food available. ¢

“We are putting together a series of workshops to help our local businesses get the most out of how they present themselves and engage with customers,” said committee member Peter Boyd. “There will be tips and tricks on utilising valuable advertising space. It will be a good opportunity to meet other local retailers, share stories and experiences. “With the Matariki festival approaching, a few community groups are joining together to highlight the celebrations. We encourage others

to join us and support our local Spirit of Matariki festival by theming shop displays for the month of June. We hope to make this an annual event,” he said. Matariki is about growth and can mean a lot of different things to different people. New beginnings, products or ser vices, new relationships and a time for reflection. The workshop is free for forum members and $10 for non-members. To register your place at the workshop email chairperson66@ gmail.com.

After many years serving the community and assisting customers with their electronic needs, the McKay’s of McKay’s Electrical have handed over the reins of their long standing family business. Founder Tom McKay was born in Lower Hutt and in 1911 his family moved to Napier. From an early age he was required to earn a living, helping his mother bring up his three brothers. Tom became an electrical apprentice and passed his exam aged 18 in 1925. Home electrical appliances were just beginning to take off at this time and Tom helped install the first refrigerator and washing machine ever sold in Napier. This cemented a deep love for his work and after meeting Mona Chapman and marrying her in 1933, he took a trip to Dargaville where he formed a business deal with a plumber named Jim Robertson which would see the pair work together to service the area. Eighteen months after marrying, Mona became unwell and died. Tom sold half of his Hawke’s Bay business and threw himself into establishing a version of the McKay’s Electrical we know today, then situated on the corner of Victoria and Poto Street in Dargaville. An iconic Dargaville business has changed hands and on June 2 Trudi Johnston and Craig Woollam became the new owners of McKay’s Electrical. Craig will combine his existing business Northland Satellite Services with McKay’s bringing customers a complete service, from purchase to installation. Craig began working for McKay’s Electrical when he left school starting out in sales and retail before moving on to electrical work and repairs out the back. After a 10 year stint, the world beckoned him and he left Dargaville to travel. On his return to New Zealand, Craig worked for SKY in Auckland for 16 years as national quality control manager. Re-imagined, reinforced and ready to work u by Andy Bryenton

When it comes time to choose a new ATV quad for the farm, and especially one to be put through a grueling rote of farming chores by farm staff daily, it’s not the bells and whistles which count. It’s toughness, reliability, and to a large extent price which dictate a shrewd investment. Which is not to say that rider comfort, safety, storage options and power don’t come into the mix, it’s just that, dollar for dollar, most Kiwi farmers are looking for a working

tool, not a recreational toy. Can Am have been providing ATV quads for the New Zealand farmer for quite a while now, along with farmers around the world. They’ve been quick to realise that the most hated thing of all, on rural spreads from Arkansas to Akaroa,

is maintenance downtime. That’s why they’ve toughened up their new, lowpriced, high-durability Outlander 450L series, producing a new, single seater ATV which is all about more bang for your buck. It’s a no-frills approach, focused on work, not necessarily play. Racing stripes and alloy mags give way to a smarter air cleaner system, a reimagined 450cc, liquid cooled Rotax four stroke providing 38 horsepower. Even the frame has moved past tubular steel, using less bolts and less welds for long-lasting structural rigidity. The suspension has been improved with more travel over the bumps both front and back, and a new double front A-arm system to reduce dive in the corners.

As usual, there’s Can Am’s trademark trailing torsional independent system at the back, keeping things smooth and in control. All of which should be no surprise, Can Am, like their rivals in both the USA and Asia, have to innovate and improve to survive the cut and thrust of the ATV world. What is different, though, is the price. Visit any Can Am dealership and you will be surprised at the low cost of the new L series of Outlanders, as well as the comprehensive nature of their warranty. It’s all part of a concerted push by Can Am to wrest the rural utility quad crown from its contenders, one which can only gain momentum with products like these hitting the forecourts and paddocks for the 2015/16 season. ¢

The ride-on doctor is in u by Andy Bryenton

By this stage of the season, outdoor power equipment has already taken a hammering. A long, warm autumn has kept mowers in demand right up to the first frost, when chainsaws and log splitters have had their due. In between, there’s been work aplenty for weed eaters, edgers, pruners and chippers too. But there are few machines which do the hard yards without a pit stop quite like the reliable old ride-on. It’s a factor of versatility these days. Where once these machines were fit mainly for maintaining a level ‘bowling green’ of a lawn, new modifications have made them tough, nimble and agile. Some can even chomp their way through growth which would daunt a man armed with a brushcutter! Weekend after weekend these machines do their duty, with often never a thought for how they’re coping under the strain. That’s why this time of year is a good one to give your ride on a proper service.

Have a look and take a listen for any drop in performance, any squeaky belts, rattles, clanks or shudders. Check the battery and the oil, as you would for your daily driver. Or better yet, bring the trusty old ride-on into a professional for a real revitalising pit-stop. Trevor and his team at Godfrey’s Chainsaws and Mowers see a lot of rideons this time of year, when grass growth has slackened off. It’s a good time to put them up on the stand and make sure that they’re ready when spring lights the fuse under your lawn! With everything from Stihl chainsaws to Castelgarden ride-ons in stock, Trevor has seen every kind of small engine over the years, and his advice, from this perspective of experience, is to service in winter and reap the benefits when the weather turns warm! ¢

Activity park becomes reality

Otamatea Duke Of Edinburgh students have jumped on board to see Maungaturoto Activity Park become a reality. A group of Otamatea High School students have taken on the challenge of completing the park along with support of Maungaturoto Country Club and the Residents Association. The group have regular meetings and have drawn up plans which gives skaters, bike and scooter riders a safe new place to ride. The youth are volunteering their time in order to improve the community and ensure there are suitable activities for young people. “I think it’s wonderful what these children are doing, the more they take ownership of the community,

the better it is for everyone,” said member of both the country club and the residents association, Eileen Parsons. The park is estimated to cost around $60,000 to construct and the team are hopeful that with the support of everyone in the community they will raise the funds required, in time to complete construction this summer. To make a cash donation towards the project, please visit givealittle.co.nz/project/activitypark# or post a cheque made out to the Maungaturoto Activity Park care of Claude Smyth, Treasurer, P.O Box 1, Maungaturoto, 0520. ¢
