The various sports clubs had children testing their talent. “Caroline’s Crazy Critters petting farm was a big hit and the day was fun-filled with many different activities for all to try. Bridge promise boosts stakes u by Paul Campbell

The government has pledged to upgrade the twin one-way bridges at Matakohe as part of a multimillion dollar injection into Northland, as the by-election campaign heats up in the wake of polls showing Winston Peters New Zealand First is leading the charge.

Big opportunity for Selwyn

Selwyn Graham has been given a lifechanging opportunity …

P7

The promise is to replace 10 singlelane bridges in Northland over the next six years, at a cost of between $32 million and $69 million. There has been no elaboration on the huge disparity in the amount of money said to be spent. National’s candidate for the Northland by-election Mark Osborne, with transport

minister Simon Bridges, revealed the plans to upgrade the bridges on the Twin Coast Highway. This came hard on the heels of Mr Peters whistle stop visit to Dargaville, where he once attended school, telling a street meeting: “Look at the roads, the one way bridges. There are more

here than anywhere else in the country,” he said. The National pledge was “political cynicism of the worst sort. In their one week of panic they can’t decide between $32 million and $69 million. That tells you everything. continued on page 5 …

Kellys Bay fire updated ‘Ruawai’ launch u by Ayla Miller

u by Ayla Miller

A drop in wind meant a fire on Pouto Peninsula was no longer threatening residential properties in the Kellys Bay area, as Lifestyler went to press, but authorities warn it may burn for weeks to come.

The Northland Regional Council has launched its new 6.7 metre Kaipara Harbour workboat.

3

p Des Subritzky, Graeme Ramsey and Reverend Rex Nathan at the launch of the Northland Regional Council’s new boat ‘Ruawai’ at the Ruawai boat ramp

p The fire at Kellys Bay covers a wide area

“We are talking about a matter of weeks. There won’t necessarily be flames, just smouldering and possible hot spots,” said Conservation partnerships manager for the Northern district, Sue Reed Thomas. “It will take significant time to ensure there is no danger from these.” Some community members who had self-vacated last Friday evening were advised last Monday it was safe to return, at which stage the fire had burnt over 10 kilometres with 205 hectares of secondary ground cover in flames.

Eighty personnel were continuing to work in the affected area. Kelly’s Bay Road north had been closed with only residents and fire crews allowed access. There have been reports of smoke and dust hazards on Pouto Road which is being used as a detour. Drivers must stick to a 40 kilometre an hour speed limit due to poor visibility. The Department of Conservation is waiting confirmation on how the fire started and where but is being treated as suspicious. For fire updates, go to our website at www.kaiparalifestyler.co.nz. ¢

Aptly, the customised vessel named Ruawai, was launched at its namesake town boating ramp last Monday. The boat is an off-the-shelf designed and built Surtees, outfitted to regional council requirements, and worth about $120,000 including its trailer. “The naming of the boat ‘Ruawai’ really reflects how important the river and harbour is to the community,” said councillor Graeme Ramsey. “It will go on to do monitoring work on the harbour navigational aids and reflects the importance of freshwater management and the life of the harbour for the council. It’s a big part of our job and it’s good that we will have the equipment to do it.”

The ‘Ruawai’ is equipped with the latest technology with built in sonar scanning to find sunken vessels, navigation aids and moorings. The launch was followed by a gathering at the Ruawai Football Club Room where harbour warden Des Subritzky spoke about the history of the steamboat ‘SS Ruawai’ which used to be a familiar sight along the Northern Wairoa pre-1948. The new vessel replaces ‘Tai Ao’ which has been the workboat for 14 years and joins two other council craft. The ‘Ruawai’ will be kept in Whangarei for most of the work in the southern area including the Kaipara Harbour. ¢

FISH, FARM AND FAMILY

545 Robertson Road, Ruawai

This 83 hectare dairy farm is located on the Ruawai flats, only 5 minutes on the tarseal from excellent snapper fishing, primary and secondary schooling, and community activities. The Ruawai flats are well-known for their ability to sustain low-cost dairy systems due to naturally fertile soils and mild winter soil temperatures. Local farms generally achieve 900-1200 kg milk solids per hectare with low to medium inputs. A second-year reconversion, this farm is on target for 60,000kg this season and 70,000 kg next season on a grass-only system. The cowshed is 20 aside, quiet and easy to operate. The water system is new from the bores to the troughs, fencing and races are new, effluent ponds and irrigation system is all new. The two homes have new roofs, carpet, curtains, kitchens, bathrooms, are fully painted internally. Now´s your chance to get your foot in the door and secure your future in the heart of the dairy industry.

Ruawai Lions charity auction Centre marks u by Ann Morgan

Ruawai Lions will soon be out and about collecting goods for their annual auction to raise funds for the many organisations and individuals in the community that receive donations each year. Kaipara Kumara forecourt is the place to come on Saturday, March 28. “There are many bargains to be found — electrical goods, furniture, bric-abrac, books, toys, farming goods and more. We also have sponsors’ products for auction too — does anyone need metal for their races?” says club secretary Dorothy Simpson.

Proceeds will go to many different causes including college sports teams, our local memorial hall, the Rescue Helicopter, school prizegivings, Hospice Kaipara and St John’s. “Lions always welcome new members, men and women from a range of different backgrounds. “Our success is the community’s success and this depends on community support.” If you have something saleable to contribute to the auction contact Jim or Dorothy Simpson on 09 439 2557 or any Ruawai Lions member and they will make arrangements for your goods to be collected. ¢

The Dargaville Arts Association splashed some colour around the Northern Field Days this year, raising awareness and funds for a new art centre.

Bridge promise boosts stakes “In fact, plans for the same work existed in the roading plan in 2009, but were pulled by Mr Bridge’s predecessor.“ Mr Osborne is in a two-horse race with Mr Peters after the Northland seat became available following the resignation of National’s Mike Sabin. Opinion poll results have Labour’s Willow-Jean Prime a trailing third, but leader Andrew Little has indicated his party’s followers in Far North could give their vote to Mr Peters instead, “to send the government a message,” a statement echoing Mr Peter’s campaign slogan. While Mr Peters has accused the government of neglecting the region, particularly its roading, Mr Bridges says the National-led government had invested over $750 million in Northland roads in the past seven years. Mr Peters says he will be

working on policies that will use Northland’s natural resources to add value to the community. Roading and transport was a hotly debated topic in the crowd at his Dargaville stopover with onlookers querying his proposal to fix Northland’s roads and work on the railway lines. “I promise you the Northland railway system will be fixed up and a link with Marsden Point will be put in for the first time,” he said. ¢ Footnote: GreyPower will hold a by-election candidate’s meeting at the Methodist Church on Friday, March 20 at 1pm with National candidate Mike Osborne, Labour’s Willow-Jean Prime, Focus’s Joe Carr, Act’s Robin Grieve and Mana’s Rueben Taipari Porter, expected to attend.

SHANE CULLEN p Lee Giles, Peter Boyd and Kimberly Bartz of the Dargaville Arts Association, fundraising at the Northland Field Days

“We are working towards creating a full arts centre which will bring together all the community painters, sculptors and musicians and make Dargaville a thriving arts town,” said vice-chairman and abstract painter Peter Boyd. “We need a bit of funding to keep us going, to make what we do worthwhile and to make sure what we do has maximum input into the community.” The Dargaville Arts Association Inc is a non-profit organisation. The centre aims to create a sustainable environment that will support artists to see them grow, learn and teach through workshops and hold exhibitions to promote their works.

“We will be arranging more fundraising events further down the track,” he said. “I see a lot of value in creativity. It is very therapeutic. We have incredibly talented people here in Dargaville and we want to give them a space to be able to express that. “There are a number of different arts centres around the country, like the Quarry Arts Centre in Whangarei, that we would like to incorporate ideas from. It is essential to have a platform to promote our works.” Contact the Dargaville Ar ts Association at dargavillearts@gmail. com. ¢

Big opportunity for Selwyn

7

u by Joanne Speechly

Selwyn Graham has been given a life-changing opportunity, thanks to the support of Big River FM and CCS Disability Action. The music-loving 21-year-old approached the Dargaville radio station in search of employment 12 months ago and was met with enthusiasm — a welcome relief, after a series of closed doors. “He knocked on the door, completely soaked, after being out in the rain with his support worker looking for a job,” says station manager Anaru Tana. “I saw rejection and he seemed used to it, so I took the time to talk to him.” Selwyn has been volunteering at Big River FM ever since but is very excited to now have secured a paid position. “I’m looking forward to learning more about radio, working in a team environment, gaining knowledge about

the community and finding out how I can help others. I will also be able to save money and I’ll have more independence.” CCS Disability Action is committed to creating communities that include all people and community support coordinator Angela Cartwright helps people with disabilities into employment. She says Selwyn, who has an impairment affecting his mobility and speech, has amazing attributes and abilities and she is thrilled about his new opportunity. “I feel utterly blessed to see people reach their goals and gain confidence, and also to meet people who are willing to mentor others — jobs change people’s lives.”

Loosely based on HBO’s ‘The Sopranos’, audiences for the play will get to experience a comedic murder mystery unfolding around them as they dine. The audience is encouraged to dress as their favourite gangster or moll and join in on the fun with prizes for the best dressed. There is also a prize for those who can figure out ‘whodunnit.’ The main character Chris, is played by newcomer Reno Skipper. Inspired when he took his family to see ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘The Wind in the Willows’, he decided to join the theatre. “I really love the camaraderie and friendship at the theatre — it is similar

Heat pumps can be a cost effective way of heating and cooling your house and ensuring you are not losing money out the window. Thermal curtains also help keep the warmth in and save power in the long run. Whilst also being attractive to look at, they double as sophisticated energy saving devices. They block light, lessen noise and prevent heat escaping. By reducing the heat lost through windows, families can save money on heating and power. Autumn is also a good time to reevaluate interior decorating. Creating a new look for your home is often as

simple as changing the wallpaper or colour scheme. Wallpapers offer a wide range of different patterns and textures that can turn any room from drab to delightful. Modern wallpaper and paint also has the benefit of being easy to clean, so if you have youngsters in the house, spills and accidents aren’t the end of the world. Wooden flooring is a sure way to beautify a house and will give any home a classic look that won’t go out of style. Tiles are another versatile way of enhancing your kitchen or bathroom. They are also low maintenance and easy to clean. ¢

DINING GUIDE

New season’s flavour abounds

The change of seasons heralds a change of menus and signature dishes across the region, with new fare on offer to take advantage of seasonal ingredients. But of course it’s not all change — the favourites are still all here, as evidenced by the menu at the new re-opened Northern Wairoa Hotel’s restaurant. Autumn marks the perfect time for this historic tavern to get back into hearty meals, though this time they have brought a Mediterranean flavour to their selection, with head chef Chris adding delicious Turkish favourites to the menu. Of course, the sizzling steaks and seafood which are a Northern Wairoa favourite remain — but what better incentive to try something new than the allure of new and exotic flavours? It’s all about trying something new for lunch at Raan A Haan Thai Aroi Dee, where the change of seasons has seen very affordable Thai lunch-box meals

up on the menu. A selection of Thai favourites will be available to take out. At Matich’s Premiere Restaurant there’s double the reason to visit — not only are their blackboard special favourites and new menu choices, there is also the chance to pick up some fresh fish for your own homemade chowder. Entertainment abounds this month as well — with the Aratapu Tavern putting on a full dance-card of top performers in March. The famous Kevin Jobbit and his 60’s-inspired rock tribute band come together for their yearly shindig at the Dargaville Club, and of course toward the end of the month the Northern Wairoa will play host to Three Houses Down, the soulful reggae quartet backed up by local legends Fat 32. ¢

Add to a bowl with finely chopped capsicum, onion, spring onion and mayonnaise. race. This week on national television John Key stated that Winston Peters is not interested in the people of Northland and only turning his sights on the region to be disruptive. “Today he cares so much after 40 years in politics about Northland.” Mr Key said. “Why is he doing that? It is pretty obvious to see, he wants to give the government a black eye.” National is also claiming that the Labour party’s leader Andrew Little should come clean, that a deal has been done with NZ First whereby Labour voters are encouraged to support Winston Peters as a way to get National out. The irony of National’s stance is that they have also done deals with the Act Party and United Future by encouraging National voters to vote for Act and United as a means of gaining political power for National. We Northlanders are conscious that the National government has held the Northland seat for over 50 years. The last time control of the electorate was taken away from National was when Social Credit’s Vern Cracknell defeated National’s candidate Logan Sloane who was the then Member of Parliament. While National regained the seat, there was no doubt the then National government took a greater interest in the Northland seat to regain the confidence of the electorate.

Be my Guest

In the last year’s general election the National government took a casual attitude when it came to electioneering in its safe Northland seat. Over the next three weeks I believe that we will see ministers in their parliamentary limousines travelling through Northland’s poor roading network. I believe the only way that the National government is going to have a hope in this by-election is to somehow convince the voters that they will finally address Northland’s special economic and social problems and poor infrastructure, such as roading and having a bridge replacement programme. During the general election five months ago the Prime Minister claimed New Zealand had a ‘rock star’ economy. In 20 weeks how the world has changed, with world-wide trade embargos, a $6 billion decline in NZ dairy farmer incomes and regions like Northland suffering economic downturns, while Auckland city and Christchurch are continuing to have government assistance resulting in millions of dollars being poured into the development of thousands of new houses and new shopping centres. I believe the very important question is, where are the jobs going to come from to create the employment opportunities for the residents of these new houses. During the time of the Lange and Roger Douglas fourth Labour government we saw, particularly in Auckland, the rise and fall of large entrepreneurial developers such as Chase Corporation and others, who were encouraged by the government, and the Prime Minister David Lange stating in 1988 that “Farming is a sunset industry and manufacturing and tourism will take its place.” The subsequent years have proven that farming and the rural hinterland are the economic keystones of the New Zealand economy. In Maori mythology the North Island represents Maui’s fish. It is time for Northland, the tail of Maui’s fish, to react vigorously. ¢

Green machines a versatile choice

FA R M I N G

u by Andy Bryenton

There was a wealth of agricultural power on display at the recent Northland Field Days, with machines manufactured in many nations competing for attention from the farming public. But, as at immense agricultural expos such as Europe’s giant Agritechnica, one of the most noticeable brands was liveried in smart green and black. Deutz Fahr’s range of tractors lived up to their reputation as the ‘Mercedes Benz

of Farming’, displaying a range which covered a wide scope of applications, from row cropping through to the toughest tasks in pasture management. It was little surprise that the big German marque put on a good showing. p Deutz Fahr — winners of this year’s Golden Tractor award for design

Their 9 series of large 270-hp-plus machines have just received the award for best design in the coveted European Golden Tractor competition. That same philosophy of meticulous engineering is apparent in the smaller, more versatile 5 and 6 series tractors which excited a lot of attention at our local Field Days. This may be because of the advances in fuel economy, power, stability and ease of operation which have marked out Deutz Fahr as a market leading innovator. Certainly, these machines are made to pass the very stringent European Union emissions standards, and do so with a suite of technological engine advancements which also aim to save fuel. But there’s also the fact that the ‘Mercedes Benz’ comparison

GRANT ENGINEERING • Milking Machinery • Cowshed Pipework • Lathe & Milling Machining • Milking Machinery testing & quality control (same day repairs) • Aluminium & Stainless welding

also extends to the comfort and logical layout of the 5 and 6 series’ cab — a place where spending hours behind the controls seems a lot less like a chore. With tractors in the ‘mid range’ horsepower band a popular choice with farmers looking for a versatile, multi-role machine, it’s good to know that, at Deutz Fahr at least, top-tier technologies aren’t just lavished on the big 300hp beasts at the top of the intensive farming line. Awards, as Deutz Fahr knows, come and go, and there are always more to strive for. But the measure of a good tractor is found out in the field, season by season — and that is the victory they are pursuing with their mid-sized tractors here in the Kaipara. ¢

Apprenticeship opens doors u by Ayla Miller

Petra Gough is now working as a fully qualified hairdresser having just completed her apprenticeship at Fibre Hair salon. After three and a half years of training, the future is looking bright for Petra. “The apprenticeship will help me, as one day I’d like to open my own salon,” she says. “To run a salon you really need qualifications and to know both sides of hairdressing. “I liked the idea of learning on the job. I like working with people and I enjoy the work, seeing results and doing complete changes.” She has been working full time throughout her training. “Hairdressing is really flexible. I can take it anywhere,” she says.

Petra completed her training in December and will continue to learn more this year through a Wella colour course which includes more advanced techniques. The apprenticeship involved on-thejob training which she says came from all of her colleagues. “Not everyone works full time so everyone helped me out when they could.” The course is run by the Hairdressing Industry Training Organisation and consists of some off-the-job training as well as weekly theory and practical study with final exams taken in the salon. This ensures trainees are up to industry standard. ¢
