Rowland wins for cancer  by Paul Campbell

Shearing champion Rowland Smith has crowned his Ruawai family’s trophy collection with this year’s Golden Shears title, donating his prize money to the fight against cancer. “It was an emotional end to the 53rd Golden Shears, an event in which Rowland has previously won the junior and senior sections,” said Shearing Sports New Zealand spokesman, Doug Laing. “Rowland’s mother Christel, died of cancer, and at the Golden Shears finals was the second place getter in woolhandling, Joanne Kumeroa, who is battling the disease. “It was a really emotional and poignant moment when Rowland told the crowd ‘it’s not for the money’ and leaned down from the board and gave Joanne a huge hug, as he donated his $3,000 cheque to the shearer’s cancer fund. That has brought it to more than $11,000 in donations and other gifted prizes from the event.” Smith has been on winning form on the New Zealand shearing circuit since January when he returned to competition after honeymooning in Hawaii with his new wife and fellow shearing recordbreaker, Ingrid Baynes. The couple now live in Hastings. In Ruawai, family celebrations are still on hold, with shearing taking first place. “Rowland’s father Matt and his two brothers are actually away shearing in the United States,” said his stepmother, Lynn. “I’m holding the fort I guess, and have just moved 370 sheep over 10 paddocks. We are thrilled with the news and I have texted the family and Rowland with congratulations. Winning

Marshall was first to finish the five sheep final, taking 7min 39.588sec and four points ahead of 18-year-old Mataura shearer Kahn Culshaw.

Piano accordion maestro Kevin Friedrich makes his annual homecoming to Dargaville this month accompanied by a uniquely crafted kauri accordion that has been more than two years in the making.

Made from wood donated by Dargaville builder, Arthur Maich, and inlaid with paua shell, the first ever kauri accordion is one of three instruments similar in design but crafted individually by traditional accordion artisan Aaro Luukinen at the Ikaalinen College of Crafts and Design in Finland. Kevin describes the feel of the kauri frame and the experience of drawing music from it as ‘profound.’ “Until it was finished Aaro had no idea what the sound would be like — no-one had, because a kauri accordion had never before been played. But everyone is delighted with its beautiful resonance.” Following a public debut at a concert at the Lighthouse Function Centre, the new accordion will reside in Dargaville as part of Kevin’s personal collection, the ‘Accordion Gems’ display in the music room at the Museum , while its triplets will remain in Finland and with Kevin respectively. With an instrument in each hemisphere and also at his base in New

York, Kevin can practice and play without having to cart one around on his travels. “We have a great welcome planned for the little accordion at the concert,” says Kevin. “Ken Cashin, Dargaville’s photographer extraordinaire, has put together an audio visual presentation that documents its creation — from Arthur Maich preparing the wood and the shipping of the wood to Finland, to the crafting of the instruments.“ The six minute clip will premiere at the concert as Kevin performs an original accordion work by New Zealander Brett Gibson, entitled ‘The First Dance’. ‘An Afternoon of Music with Kevin Friedrich and Friends’ is at 1pm on Sunday, March 24, with tickets available now through the Dargaville Museum: 09 439 7555.

The historic house of Joseph Dargaville is part of the Norfolk Court Rest Home and CEO Stuart House imagines the founder planted the tree soon after it was built in 1874 making the pine around 139 years old. “This is a huge loss not only to us but for the community of Dargaville,” says Stuart adding they named the rest home after the tree and it features in their logo.  Ruawai Lions members are out and about, collecting goods for their charity auction on Saturday March 23. Organiser Jim Simpson says people with items to donate can either drop them off or arrange for them to be picked up. “Just give us a call.” The auction starts in the Kaipara Kumara forecourt at 10am with viewing from 9.30am, and a trading table for small items opens at 9am.  Around 60 people took free snorkelling tours run by the Whitebait Connection programme at Lake Waikere last weekend. Kim Jones from the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust says the day was a ‘real success’ combining with the waka ama club attracting another 40 people. Among the flora and fauna they saw endangered longfin eels and Kim adds they saw more than last year which is ‘encouraging.’

Organiser Carol Hunter says the market will run monthly on Fridays between 4pm and 8pm, with a view to becoming fortnightly further down the track. “We’ve scheduled a Friday evening so it won’t compete with the other local markets.” The market will feature art, crafts, new clothing, plants and produce, with an emphasis on handcrafted quality. Carol says she moved to Maungaturoto from Whangarei six years ago, inspired by the community spirit she found in the town. “Our motto for the market is ‘Created to Inspire’, as we see it not only as an outlet for local creativity and an opportunity for people to become more self-reliant, but also as a social hub where people can get together and motivate each other.” She has been delighted at the response from a variety of local businesses. “We have twenty stalls booked already, ranging from lingerie, cosmetics, mosaics, knitting, fashion, honey, seafood, eggs and jewellery, but the Centennial Hall will hold plenty

Festival takes the cake As part of the Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival at Harding Park on March 23 there will be a cooking contest which will be ‘bigger and better than last year.’

Cooking competition co-ordinator, Annette Scarfe, along with committee members, Lynley Thompson and Raewyn Sills, have made contact with 23 schools in the Kaipara district and received positive feedback. “We’ve had a lot of enthusiasm from students and perhaps students could get Grandma or Mum or Dad involved harbouring some friendly family competition.” There will be two categories, juniors and open, and aspiring bakers can enter into four sections; cakes, small cakes, cup cakes and healthy baked snacks. The Northland District Health Board is encouraging all stall holders to have healthy options available and the healthy baked snack section has a twist. “Competitors have to design their snack for a specific person — a forestry worker is going to have a different amount of carbohydrates that their body needs than someone who goes to school.” She adds that men are welcome to enter and showcase their culinary skills and to bring along their recipes as they will be published in local media.

Judges Vi Wood-Oliff and Heather Ware from Whangarei will pick the best baked treats with the prize giving at 4pm. Entries must be in by 10am and open to public viewing between 2-4pm. Cosy winter on cards Money for Mangawhai All 24 council-owned housing units in Fagan Place, Mangawhai, have been refurbished over the summer, receiving insulation and an exterior repaint.

With insulation at the top of the residents wish list, Kaipara District Council accessed a 60 per cent subsidy for the insulation work through the Warm Up NZ: Heat Smart scheme administered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. “The elderly residents get warmer, healthier units and council benefits from improving our assets ,” says KDC community development facilitator, Heidi Dreyer. She says the installation was completed with little inconvenience to the residents as they were not required to leave their units.

The Mangawhai Endowment Fund Committee has made grants to the Mangawhai community totalling $55,104.

These were $860 to Mangawhai Riparian Planting Group; $30,000 to the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society; $4,604 to NZ Fairy Tern Charitable Trust; $13,200 to Mangawhai Historical Society; and $6,500 to Mangawhai Plunket Group. The fund was created from the disestablishment of the Mangawhai Harbour Board in 1965, with the board’s Mangawhai property assets being vested in the former Otamatea

County Council. Annual applications are called from the Mangawhai community for grants, which are distributed from income after inflation proofing the fund’s value. Committee Chair, Colin Dale, acknowledged the quality of all 11 applications received. “But, unfortunately, with applications for more than $266,000, the committee had to decline some applications.” The next round of applications is due around October.

Organiser Dave Prankerd from Mangawhai says Rotary has departed from their donated goods auction model for this year’s fundraiser. “Farmers’ machinery auctions used to be quite common — it’s a good way for cockies to clear out the shed to make way for new equipment and farmers starting out to get their hands on second hand gear.“ The auction is on behalf of sellers, with all items required to be delivered on site on March 21 and 22 with any unsold goods collected by March 24. Dave says auctioneer Brad Jackson from Thornton Auctions has been very

generous, running the auction at cost only. “The usual commission would be 30%, but we’re doing it for 20% and at least half of it goes straight to Rotary to support community projects. “Register your gear as soon as you can,” says Dave, “already we’ve been flooded with quality entries and it’s set to be a great sale.” The auction site at 1920 State Highway 12, Kaiwaka has ample parking and a sausage sizzle and cold drinks will be available. The death of 93-year-old Tom Ringrose has left the Kaipara rural community mourning the loss of a colourful link to the past, as the consummate axe man, bushman and sometimes bon vivant was laid to rest at the cemetery on the side of Tokatoka at the weekend. “He is appropriately in sight of the pub, and a couple of bottles of brew went with him,” said a friend who attended the graveside funeral service along with some 200 others. Tom was a familiar figure in the range between Dargaville and Paparoa, most recently in the firewood business with Naumai’s Jo and Wayne Steiner, of Jo’s Cafe. “Tom had a long and varied country life,” said Wayne. “He was apparently an excellent shot with his single barrel Purdy and a great pool player. He was an independent bloke, and if we offered him too many cups of tea or sandwiches in a work break sitting on the porch, he’d take it as encroaching on that. and was still chopping firewood right towards the end.” In earlier years, Tom also worked as a pub bouncer in the early bush days. He once, and only once, went to Auckland. “That was in 1953, to buy a motorbike,” said Wayne.”Apart from that, he pretty much stuck to the Tokatoka area, with the odd trip through to have a beer at the Paparoa Pub.” The pub in fact kept a crate of beer at room temperature for Tom, who’d been weaned on his beverage in the days before refrigeration. He was laid to rest in a family plot at Tokatoka, and he is survived by two younger brothers, aged 85 and 91. “A real local icon has left us, a real dinkum bushman,” said Wayne. Find

Local connection to Ireland’s big day

New sound at Big River  by Rose Rees-Owen

A new purpose built studio and sound booth has been two years in the making according to Big River FM manager Anaru Tana.

While the early history of Maungaturoto is based in the Albertland settlement — 150 years ago this year — the forests of the early Kaipara attracted settlers from across the thenpowerful British Empire, including many immigrants from Ireland. When the Maungaturoto hotel was built, more than a century ago, this Celtic community found the perfect place to celebrate that most Irish of festivals; Saint Patrick’s Day. After a lengthy restoration project the historic hotel is once again back to its former glory, and is now under the management of the Collins family, themselves proud to hail from the ‘Emerald Isle’. This year the hotel is ready and the stage is set for a true celebration of the day the Irish call Lá Fhéile Pádraig — an ancient tradition which has grown into a worldwide day of merriment and fun. Just as it must have been back in those pioneer days of the 19th century, the

Maungaturoto Hotel will be a centre of Irish hospitality, with traditional Guiness and Kilkenny pints on tap, music both old and new, and hearty dishes served up from the kitchen from old Irish recipes. It has taken a lot of hard work and the help of many familiar faces in the Maungaturoto community to restore the hotel and make it a living piece of the town’s history, and this celebration is a chance to showcase just how far the grand old building has come. They say that on the 17th ‘everyone in the world is Irish for 24 hours’, and being able to share this fun and friendly day of Irish culture with the people of the Kaipara — in a building with such a rich local history — is a distinct pleasure for the Collins family, their friends and staff. Join in a tradition going back to the middle ages (and a tradition celebrated in Maungaturoto since Irish settlers first landed on these shores) by donning the traditional green and raising a pint or two with them.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve facilities,” says Anaru. A Radio Engineer designed the on air studio and sound booth. It took around two weeks to build, with local builders and volunteers donating materials and their time saving the station thousands of dollars. “This year is all about evolving the Station,” says Anaru, “The upgrade is long overdue, with more

improvements scheduled for later in the year.” DJs and visitors can now plug in their mp3 devices as well as smart phones and tablets through an auxiliary input bringing it into the digital era. Intern, Callum Lee, who aspires to work for The Rock, says the new improvements will help to further develop the skills necessary for him to enter commercial radio.
