p The annual World Kidney Day Fun Run and Walk drew a crowd of around 40 people despite the uncertain weather. Occupations manager for Dargaville and Bay of Islands Hospital, Jen Thomas, said: “Considering the weather had been unpredictable earlier in the day the event was still well supported by hospital staff and the community. Fifteen spot prizes were donated by local and Whangarei businesses.” Proceeds from the entry fee went towards renal patients’ education and support.

Roads get funding windfall
Animal management advice
3
u by Ayla Miller
Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), Kaipara District Council and animal management contractor Armourguard is calling on residents to work with them to solve the issue of roaming dogs in the area.
p DIY road repairs. Pahi resident, Thane Colquhoun, found concreting a large pothole in Picadilly Street a “quicker solution than waiting for council.”
The funding windfall comes after allocated spending for the financial year fell short of budget. Asked later if slips were being targeted in the increased spend, Mayor Smith said: “The details of the roading work programme across Kaipara District, considering the level of spend, are extensive. An added complication is that the weather plays a big part in which scheduled tasks can be done when intended and which must be reprioritised. “So it’s dynamic, not constant. The positive right now is that more money will lead to improved roads, whether that’s slips, heavy metalling or other remedial works.” A slip on Pahi Road near Paparoa, four months ago, reduced traffic to a single lane. KDC infrastructure field officer, Jenny King, says the slip “is currently sitting on number 119 in our
slip priority list. The maintenance crew have done some temporary remedial works there and it is being monitored, but permanent repairs are not planned for the next few years.” In a concurrent statement, KDC says footpath repairs are being concentrated within the Dargaville township. “Repairs started prior to Christmas and will continue through March. The current footpath repairs have certainly taken longer than council expected and this has been addressed,” said communications officer, Ben Hope. “The contractor will also engage a local subcontractor in a program of work of approximately $75,000 to help complete the remaining repairs.” The future prospects for Kaipara roading and infrastructure are contained in the Long Term Plan, which is currently open for submissions. ¢

CAB volunteers in Dargaville received an increasing number of calls from concerned community members about roaming dogs in the area over the last few months, including reports of cats being killed. “People were calling us because they felt they weren’t being listened to when they called Animal Control,” said CAB chairman, Richard Faulkner. There are currently 4,662 registered dogs in Kaipara and funds from registration are directly related to recovery costs for the administration of dog related services by the council contractor. Council spokesperson, Ben Hope, said the council is working on increasing customer satisfaction regarding the animal management contractors. “On the basis of complaint numbers and customer satisfaction surveys we could always do more to be proactive, and are constantly working towards upping the residents’ survey results, which currently sit at 64 per cent satisfaction.” Representatives from CAB, Armourguard and the Kaipara District Council met late last year to discuss
the issue and compiled a statement detailing the steps concerned residents could take to assist in managing the issue. The statement advised: “If at all possible take photographs of the offending dog and if known, note the address from where the dog is homed. If a non-aggressive habitual roaming dog is causing a nuisance — if possible contain it and call Armourguard Animal Control on 0800 105 890 to come and uplift the dog. “All details, medical reports and marked clothing from an attack should be kept as evidence to build a case against the owner, should a prosecution proceed. “When lodging a complaint, ask the officer taking the details to contact you with the outcome advising the best time that suits you for a return call.” Mr Faulkner said people were welcome to continue to call CAB with any further animal management concerns and stressed that people should take the name of the Armourguard personnel and request a call back. ¢

Picnic fun for everyone Linking Hands celebrates a decade
u by Ayla Miller
The Donnellys Crossing Picnic Sports Day has been keeping traditions alive since the mid 1920s and will do it again this year on Saturday, March 17.
u by Liz Clark
Community health organisation, Linking Hands, will celebrate ten years of service this month and is inviting residents of the surrounding area to join the festivities.
p Good old-fashioned fun is sure to be had at the Donnellys Crossing Picnic Sports Day
Organiser, Michelle Cobb, invites people to come along and enjoy an oldfashioned country day. “They can enjoy lots of laughs and try new things they might not have done before,” she says. As the event falls on St Patrick’s Day, people are encouraged to dress to theme and could be in to win some spot prizes. Michelle says many local people have fond childhood memories of the event, which is why she keeps the event going every year. There will be novelty races, tug-ofwar, gumboot throwing, egg catching,
a water dunk event, needle in the haystack, raffles and many more. Historical photos and articles about the area will also be on display, along with refreshments put on as a fundraiser for Aranga School. A car boot sale will also be held for $5 per car. The event will be well signposted from State Highway 12. At Donnellys Crossing, turn into Old Mill Road. The sports ground is on the right at the end of the road. Bring plenty of change as eftpos is not available and entry is a gold coin for each vehicle. Gates open at 10.30am. ¢

Please note times for the forums have changed since the announcement in the March 6 edition of the Kaipara Lifestyler.

Census help available
Riding waves to success
u by Ayla Miller

Census engagement staff are encouraging people to get in touch if they know anyone who is having difficulty filling out their census forms and are holding help sessions on the basis of demand.
Dargaville boy Jimmy Lawrence, 17, has been selected for the International Va’a Federation (IVF) World Sprint 2018 Championships in Tahiti.
7
p Left back to front: Census staff member Jessica - Ann Holes, Te Ha Oranga coordinator for kuia and kaumatua May Pivac - Bennett and Katie Tito also from Te Ha Oranga. Right back: Susan Hau from Census and community member John Bennett
Census engagement advisory officer Tehurihanga Rihari says people who have not filled out their census forms yet will probably get a knock on their door from census staff over the next week to remind them to fill out their forms. He says the advisory group are responsive and their support works based on demand. “If there is a group of people needing help we will hold another of these sessions. “We will continue to get everyone counted and teams will be working to help people complete forms over the next few weeks.” Census staff have been engaging with
community groups such as Te Ha Oranga in order to reach a wide cross section of the society. “The biggest issues have been technical. The older generation are hesitant to do it online, but as soon as they are shown how to do it they realise it isn’t that hard. We have some tablets people can use to fill out their forms at the help sessions and we also have paper forms.” Tehurihanga encourages anyone still having difficulty to get a group together and contact the Lifestyler who will then put them in touch with the local census coordinator and arrange another help session. ¢
p Jimmy Lawrence has been selected to take part in the International Va’a Federation (IVF) World Sprint 2018 Championships in Tahiti with the J19 team Karearea under Ngati Rehia Te Tii
Jimmy belongs to the Hikuwai o Kaipara Waka Ama team based in Dargaville and trains almost every day on the Northern Wairoa. His mother, Carmen Lawrence, says Jimmy has been paddling since he was eight and won his first medal when he was 12 at the New Zealand National Sprints, held annually at Lake Karapiro. “Since then he has filled in for other teams, but over the last six to seven months he’s decided to take it seriously and competed in the most recent nationals, with the aim of being selected for the worlds,” said Carmen.
He will travel to the worlds with J19 team Karearea under Ngati Rehia Te Tii as Kaipara does not have a team for this age category to date. This team was formed four months before the New Zealand National Sprints and is made up of paddlers from all over the country. The family have until July to raise $3,640 to get Jimmy to Tahiti and cover his living costs for the duration of the event. To help the family reach their fundraising goal contact Carmen on clawrence.whanau@gmail.com. ¢

Trek raises funds for hospice
Bridge replacement progresses
A convoy of tractors, jeeps and support vehicles trundled through Kaipara last week as the Great New Zealand Fundraising Tractor Trek headed on towards Cape Reinga, after hitting the road in Bluff a month ago.
Despite Northland’s wet summer, the earth moving works at the Matakohe Bridges project on State Highway 12 are making good progress.
p Formation work for the Matakohe bridge replacement project
p Hospice Kaipara volunteers, nurses, tractor trek participants along with Kaipara District Council acting chief executive Peter Tynan (second on right) and tractor trek organiser Phil Aish (far right) stopped for a bite to eat, a chat and to do some fundraising at the Countdown Dargaville car park last week
Last Friday, the volunteer cavalcade arrived at journey’s end to begin counting funds raised for New Zealand hospices. The trek was the second trip for organiser, Phil Aish, after he lost his wife Janice to cancer, and received “unbelievable care and compassion” from hospice, promising to raise funds as her legacy. The first trek in 2016, raised more than $100,000 and Phil hoped this amount would be exceeded this year. “Our funds go to the hospice area in which they were donated,” he
said, adding that the journey through Kaipara, including stops at Paparoa and complimentary accommodation at Pahi Beach Holiday Park, a specially openedearly Kauri Museum, and at Dargaville, had attracted more donations than a stopover in Auckland. “Hospices receive funding from the government, but need some $45 million from the community to keep the service free of charge,” said Phil. Donations can be made to hospice. org.nz/get-involved/make-a-donation. ¢
NZTA manager for project delivery, Chris Hunt says teams are busy stripping topsoil along the new alignment and moving it to areas where the new roadway has to be built up. Limestone excavated to lower a quarry area, which forms part of the realigned state highway, is also being reused. “Haul roads and causeways into the two tidal estuaries, that the new bridges will span, will enable the bridge-building team to get established onsite in the autumn and start building the bridge supports. Meanwhile, the
safety of local residents and all road users, including the construction team remains a high priority. “The speed limit on SH12 is reduced to 50 km/h where trucks are entering and leaving the highway. Motorists are advised to keep their attention on the road and not be distracted by construction activity along the 3km alignment. “Please drive with caution, follow the speed limits and be prepared to stop when directed to by the stop-go operators. That way everyone stays safe,” says Mr Hunt. ¢

My eclectic journey up to CLOSURE — the exhibition u by Patricia Mortensen
My love of colour, textures, and the ability to see beautiful potential in almost everything has taken me on an eclectic journey over the years to culminate in my second solo painting exhibition. In another place and time fabric dyeing grew into a cottage industry of clothing, fabrics, exhibitions and fashion shows, and being part of the early Great New Zealand Craft Shows around the country. Later, I ventured into jewellery using paua and pink mussel shell for Craftworld in Auckland, and because of my love of blended colour from the fabric dyeing days I had a passing phase of reverse painting on glass, which I also still love. My first foray into two-dimensional art was with collage, words and mixed media, the end result being a sort of social commentary on whatever the subject was at the time, and I still love the idea of this. After becoming one of the founding members of the Dargaville Arts Association, some seven years ago, I decided to move on to what I considered proper painting. Over time, I have taken classes with the talented Elena Nikolaeva from Mangawhai. It is said one should be able to recognise the artist, no matter what the subject. Well, learning with Elena I realise I can do anything if I really try — and listen. Hence the subject material and different styles making up the eclectic nature of this exhibition. Most of my work is in acrylic or mixed media and the journey
p Patricia Mortensen with some of her work
is fun. I have called this exhibition Closure for good reason. In an effort to make room at our place my husband suggested I have an exhibition and call it Closure, which would make me work towards finally finishing quite a lot of my art works. The fun of creativity, vision and colour enlists my avid attention, but when it comes to the sort of boring finishing,
the practicalities of edges, signatures, hangers etc — well you get the story. So in order to make room — to open up the way for more artistic ventures, I have eventually done it. Here I am and actually it was fun getting here, but in future I will follow through to the finish first time round. Maybe I should have called this exhibition Learning Curve.
I have learned a lot about myself on the way. I am really an experimental artist and seem to need to try all styles from semirealist to abstract, simply to prove to myself I can do it. Sometimes, I have strayed from my natural expressive style but colour mixes and blends, textures and happy accidents are usually part of my work. ¢

Concert helps a dream

u by Ayla Miller
New Zealand’s only all-girl Bluegrass Band Hot Diggity will perform at the Dargaville Town Hall as a fundraiser to help local pottery artist, Yvonne Tana, realise her dream of exhibiting in Gisborne. Hot Diggity singer, mandolin and guitar player and Dargaville Arts Association executive committee member, Heather Carrigan, says this performance is ‘‘putting their money where their mouth is.’ “We are working hard to help build recognition for artists and support them in a tangible way. “The concert is top-quality world-class music performing in a little town. It’s fast paced, foot stomping and entertaining and we are humbled to be performing in my hometown.” Yvonne Tana is an artist of 20 years standing. In 2002, her world changed dramatically when she survived a stroke, whilst she was in her second year at Toihoukura, the Maori Visual Arts school in Gisborne, and she has always vowed to return. Yvonne will present her exhibition in Gisborne ‘Hikoi’, which means journey. The exhibition will show her work from
before the stroke, depict her struggles after it and where she is now. “I am inspired by strong Maori women like Colleen Urlich, who was my high school art teacher and also current Maori women,” she said. “A lot of my work examines how to be a contemporary Maori woman, whilst still upholding traditional values.” Heather says the emotion in Yvonne’s art is what sets her apart. “She literally forms stories from the dirt.” The Te Kopuru Kapa Haka group will open the concert on April 8 at the Dargaville Town Hall at 2pm. Tickets are $10 per person and under 12’s are free. To help get Yvonne to Gisborne visit givealittle.co.nz/cause/ stroke-victum-budding-artist. ¢

Welcome to Mangawhai Spectacular walks on offer The 19th annual Mangawhai Walking Weekend offers outstanding opportunities to explore the district and support the work of the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust. This year the popular fundraiser has 31 walks available over four days from March 14 to March 18, and caters to all fitness levels, age groups and inclinations. On the Long Tramp, walkers can enjoy spectacular coastal views, beautiful streams and waterfalls; while the Four Beaches and an Ice Cream option offers morning tea under an enormous pohutukawa tree above Langs Beach followed by a short walk, or bring a folding chair and just gaze out to sea. The Botanical Bush Tramp provides the chance to learn about conservation work, kiwi care and native flora in the company of an experienced botanist. Bald Rock Walk, on the other hand, is a two kilometre climb with spectacular 360 degree panoramic views from the Kaipara Harbour to Mangawhai. For those with a more casual approach there is Friday’s Troubadour Trail complete with musicians and entertainers or music, food and wine on Saturday, followed by the Big Breakfast on Sunday morning. Last year, the event attracted over 600 people and raised $9,000 to support the work of the Mangawhai Track Trust volunteers, who spend one day a week clearing existing tracks,

It’s the Dargaville main street’s newest store, but Loriz Feltz defies an easy definition as simply a clothing shop or boutique. Here you’ll find a spectrum of pieces ranging from the practical to the purely decorative, all using the medium of felt — and every last one is the creation of the resident artisan and designer Lorraine King. Felting is the oldest known means of producing textiles, so ancient that its origins are lost in legend. It’s likely that the Sumerians invented the warm and tactile material over 6,000 years ago, after domesticating the Karakul sheep. The soft, versatile nature of felt means it’s used worldwide, from the yurts of Mongolian nomads to the fashion houses of Europe. Lorraine pours over twenty years of experience into each piece she creates — and it really is a process of creation. Coming from a background as a dressmaker and designer, Lorraine is now able to take the creative process back to first principles, forming the very fabric with which she works. High-quality wool is layered and felted in a process, which those ancient Sumerians would still recognize today — a time intensive hand-crafting method, which delivers vivid colours, and can be intricately worked with patterns and shades. Dargaville-based athlete, Kirsten Mason, came away from the 2018 New Zealand Masters Track and Field Championships held in Whangarei with no less than a total of eight medals from eight different group events. Kirsten competed in the Women’s 35-39 age category and was the only competitor from Dargaville. This was her first time competing in the event. “I’ve never won this many medals before and I felt a great sense of achievement,” she said. Kirsten says she spent the past two athletic seasons training, keeping fit and improving her times and was pleased with her performance. “I won medals for pentathlon, long jump, javelin, 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m sprints and the 800m. My strongest events were the 800m and long jump, where I also achieved

Family, friends including fellow club members, have been great, really supportive and encouraging and overall Northland Masters athletes achieved well and took home an impressive number of medals from this event.” Now she has her sights set on the North Island Masters Champs and possibly Oceania. “I’ve always loved running and wanted to feel fit again and now that my four kids are a bit older, I’m able to set aside some time and get back into it. Other Athletics Whangarei club members and Northland masters athletes also did well and are an inspiration.” Kirsten keeps fit by training with the local harriers club and also enjoys trail and long distance running. ¢

It’s what’s inside that counts u by Andy Bryenton
Imagine your home as a giant chilly bin. No, really — when it comes to keeping the interior environment of your home at a comfortable and healthy level, the comparison is very apt. Just like in the old picnic chiller, we use insulation to buffer the desired interior temperature from ‘bleeding into’ the less harmonious outside temperature. can be had without tearing open every last plank and weatherboard. Retroinstallation is a cost-effective process, and can be undertaken swiftly and efficiently by local Northland company Heatsavers, without either a big mess or a big bill. A high-tech foam comprising millions of tiny air cells is injected into every wall cavity over a 1 to 2 day process, transforming cold and empty walls into buffers of insulation to keep the cold out and the warmth inside. For a three bedroom home this can cost less than $5,000 — a sum, which is most definitely added to the value of your home and recouped in power savings as well. With many farm houses and dwellings built before 1991, and another rural winter approaching, it might be a good time to call in the insulation professionals, ensuring a more comfortable and healthy season for everyone indoors. ¢

Now we all know about the lid — the insulation in the roof space of the home. That’s been a standard since the beginning of modern building standards, but it can deteriorate over time, needing upgrades and replenishment. What many folks neglect, however, is the sides of the container. Just as you would never buy a chilly bin without allround insulation (those drinks would get warm rather fast), so too should you consider the walls of your home as a vital spot for an insulation upgrade. Most homes built before 1991 will have no insulation at all in their walls, and in some circumstances this can really be felt. Cold and damp creep in, promoting mould, condensation and ineffective heating, costing money in the long run. The good news is that a range of benefits from in-wall insulation — ranging from a reduction in noise through to substantial electricity and heating fuel savings and an average six degree Celsius temperature boost —

THANKS FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS Recreational Services was unfortunately not successful in regaining the parks, toilets and gardens contract for the Kaipara district. Over the past five years, we have been proudly working with the local communities right across this beautiful district and it would be remiss of us not to leave without saying thank you and acknowledging all the people that helped make our time here in the Kaipara so successful. To the communities, from Mangawhai to all the townships on the edge of the harbour, along SH12 to Dargaville and finally both up and down the west coast. It has been a pleasure working within these fantastic locations, thanks for entrusting us as your parks custodians To our suppliers and subcontractors, it takes a huge team of committed companies to deliver services, repair faults and supply machinery and consumables for a contract of this size. A special thanks also goes out to Billy and Shannon in Mangawhai who supplied the team with free coffee each morning. To the Council staff, it has been a great journey. The passion of this team has seen many great improvements that will serve the district for many years to come. Together we raised the bar and have left some high expectations for the future. To our team of mower operators, cleaners, gardeners and asset maintenance staff. You have been the best, it was never easy but you always went the extra mile when needed. It has been a pleasure working with you and you should all look back at the past five years with a great deal of pride. Finally, we wish the incoming contractors only the best in continuing to bring outstanding service to the Kaipara district.

Be ready with the right equipment u by Andy Bryenton
Picture this — it’s 6am, blowing a gale, and the water pump has gone down. It’s a fair distance to the pump shed, across muddy terrain, but you know the trusty old ute will make it. Thing is — there’s a high chance that you won’t find the tools for the job because the shed is a mess, borrowed bits are still with the mates, and the gear on the ute is covered in dog tucker, dirt and straw. Too familiar? Well, it was a scenario, which Adam and Matt from Northland Boats in Kaiwaka had heard of one time too many. That’s when he and his small, but dedicated team sparked the idea of Trade Gear — a one-stop shop putting all their skills and contacts to work for local farmers. How? By constructing custom-made storage systems for ute decks and even for other vehicles as well, allowing the secure, dry transport of all the tools you need for jobs around the farm. Not only that, Adam, Matt and the Trade Gear crew sourced the full range as well. Coming from a hard-working background, Adam has worked as everything from a house painter to a restorer of our Navy’s service ships, through to welding and fabricating. He started out with a metal other welders consider tricky — aluminium — and has spent more than half a decade perfecting his craft. Matt is an engineer with years of skill at his command — the perfect
complement to the team. That means when it comes to constructing custom, lightweight boxes, racks, containers and frames to customise a ute for hard yakka, they’re the top guys to see. Trade Gear also collected a small but smart team with similar skills to help pace the workload, including his wife Jahkodii taking care of administration. While Adam and Matt’s business began successfully with boats — hence the original name — the scope for work beyond the salt water and on the land has been instantly apparent. In one business they have managed to combine setting up a mobile workshop or even a system for organising the shed, then contacted top tool suppliers to find a range, which are of a high standard of rugged durability. That means custom jobs are no issue — in fact, one of the Trade Gear team can visit your farm or workplace to measure up and quote for the whole job — from the first weld down to the last spanner. With it all in
p Where you need them — tools are no use where you can’t find them, and custom storage puts them all at hand
place there’s nothing you can’t tackle out there, from fencing to portable welding, to maintenance and repairs — just remember not to lend out tools to your mates without getting them back!
If you work hard you know half of the battle is having the right gear. Have it close at hand no matter where the job takes you, with a little help from this ingenious new company in Kaiwaka. ¢

Dargaville Arts Association is calling for those with a passion for fashion to register their interest for this year’s Dargaville Wearable Arts show.
p Entries from last years successful show
“The inaugural 2017 event had an amazing response with 36 entries, said association chair, Allan Mortensen. “ It was a huge success, and a great start for our aim of creating a quality annual event for Dargaville. ThIs year’s event in September will be divided into four categories: Moananui — great oceans; Living off the land — Farming (all types); Avante garde; and Reduce, reuse, recycle. The overall supreme winner will receive $2,500 plus a trophy, and the winners of each category and the People’s Choice will receive $1,500 each plus a trophy. “The majority of entrants from last
year are returning so those considering entering need to do so as soon a possible as entries will be limited to 50,” said Mr Mortensen. There will be two shows at the Dargaville Town Hall, the first on Saturday night, September 15, and the second will be a matinee starting at 2.00pm on Sunday, September 16. Category winners will be announced at the Saturday night show and the People’s Choice award at the Sunday matinee event. OBITUARY
Jack Fannon farewelled Long-standing Dargaville identity, John Francis (Jack) Fannon, was farewelled by an overflow requiem mass at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, February 24, before a cortege to Mt Wesley Cemetery, a time when tributes flowed from family, friends and long-time business associates. Jack put his stamp of the Dargaville and wider community in more than 70 years running his menswear business, which continues to trade under his name. The Fannon family came to Dargaville from the UK back in 1912, when Jack’s father John joined Curry’s Tailors, which he later brought in partnership with friends who followed him as immigrants, Owen Williams and Cecil Ball. Together, they built the present Victoria Street premises in 1924. Jack was still at school when both his father and Cecil Ball died, and he came into the business until the Second World War and service in New Zealand with the army, and the airforce. He returned to the business after the war and finally bought it outright in 1970, as Jack Fannon Ltd.
The shop became something of a community focal point during its long history — it was once the town’s ambulance base, with staff called on to drive when required. Jack was also a Justice of the Peace. In 2015, he was recognised as Northland’s longest serving JP, completing 48 years in the role at that time. Jack’s long and widespread contribution and services to the Dargaville community will long be remembered, say his family and friends, and his legacy will continue as his business lives on, trading under its existing name in the ownership of Kate and Emma Smith. “It is a privilege to take over a business so long in the making with its heritage and good reputation. We will continue that service,” said Kate. ¢
