“You have a very talented community judging by the art in this gallery. The landscape paintings are beautiful and depict the region so well,” she said. “I think the arts in New Zealand are in good heart and we need good community art initiatives like this one, to bring people together and to attract visitors here for the opportunity to see what great work is being done locally. That is all part of making them feel like they have had a special experience. “I think it is essential, as the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage that art, literature, performing and visual arts, tell a story that resonates with our visitors. You don’t need to know the language to look at a picture and get a sense of understanding of the culture or area. “Art connects people with the land and that is a really important role which local artists can do themselves for their communities. Coming to a gallery like this one and seeing our country through the eyes of the local artists is a wonderful thing. “I congratulate the team here because to be able to draw together artists to come together means you draw strength from each other and you can share your creative talent. This is a tourist attraction itself and anyone who likes art can call into a place like this.” The gallery is run by the Dargaville Arts Association, whose vision and goal is to eventually create an art centre incorporating their gallery. No action against consultants
Farming challenge worth it
The Kaipara District Council commissioners have decided against taking legal action against consultants, Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner Limited, for their involvement in the Mangawhai sewage debacle which mushroomed into an $80 million council debt.

The aim is to strengthen the relationship between local communities and council and give community members a voice. During the week from Monday, March 23, until Friday, March 27, a KDC Pop Up will be based on Victoria Street, between Blah Blah Blah Cafe and the Shoebox. People are encouraged to call in and speak with council staff. “We are interested in hearing what you like about Dargaville and the surrounding areas, what things are of concern to you and how you believe council and the community can work together,” says KDC community facilitator Darlene Lang Gent. A public meeting with KDC commissioners will be held at Dargaville Town Hall on Monday, March 23, at 5.30pm and Darlene expects to see a good turnout. “We plan to break people up into small groups for this meeting, with about 10 at each table, and a council staff member to facilitate,” says Darlene. Community planner Annie van der Plas says “We’re always trying to learn from what we have
done so far and develop other ways of engaging with the community. For those who prefer a more one-on-one approach, we will also be hosting two drop-in sessions.” The first drop-in session is with the commissioners on Wednesday, March 25, and the other is with the chief executive on Thursday, March 26. The Anzac Theatre’s Dargaville Community Cinema Trust is launching a Northland wide short film competition. The trust has held a Kaipara competition for five years and is now expanding it to include the entire region. “There have been some exciting and even ‘out there’ entries over the last five years,” said trust chair Graeme Ramsey. “We hope that the prizes on offer will encourage people to be creative.” The three categories include an open section with a first prize of $1,000, a school age section for individuals or groups with a $500 prize and a Gallipoli themed section with $1,000 for the winner, supported by the RSA.
“With modern technology anyone can make a quality film that will entertain. There is a huge amount of energy and creativity in Northland and we hope this will be shown by entrants to this competition,” said trust secretary, Jacoba Puharich. The adventure saw 32 students and 13 adults participate in the journey as part of their ‘Our Stories’ curriculum. “The children leave the comfort zones of home for the week and push their boundaries in a safe, happy environment, supporting each other as they learn to socialise in a different environment and participating in many activities,” says teacher Glenys McEvoy. They heard legends of Te Roroa as told by Kaumatua, Alex Nathan and Snow Tane.
“This is a unique opportunity for the students to take part in ‘old school’ outdoor education, encouraging each other along the way,” said Principal Vern Stevens. “It is a huge achievement and the students learn the history of the area, with many having family connections. “They have the satisfaction of knowing they completed the journey. It is a tradition in our school to participate in the hikoi and the students look forward to their turn for the adventure.” ¢

Arts and adventure to attract attention u by Joanne Speechly
The last weekend in March promises to be a hive of activity in Mangawhai, with three popular events providing plenty to see, do and experience. Starting with the Troubadour Trail on Friday, Mangawhai Walking Weekend returns for its 16th year with 28 walks, each graded for individual fitness. Participants can expect to cover a variety of terrain, including bush, beach and farmland. “Thanks to the brilliant vision and tenacity of the event founder Jean Goldschmidt, back in 1999, the weekend continues to grow with new walks, new ideas and new volunteers,” says Trish Whyte of the newly-formed Mangawhai Walking Weekend Charitable Trust. The weekend has become an outstanding
legacy for the Mangawhai community — it’s about bringing visitors to town, and creating a weekend to have fun, make new friends and most of all, to explore our magical slice of Northland.” The Mangawhai Artists’ Art Trail, on March 28 and 29, runs together with the walking weekend and provides an opportunity for its members to showcase their talents. “We have used Morfett Autos for servicing of our Company vehicles coming up a year now. The service they provide goes far beyond the norm, we can phone with a problem in the morning and the car is back to us by the afternoon ready to go. Daniel makes himself available to his customers to explain any questions we may have. On top of that they are happy to provide a drop off service once the vehicle is repaired. We see the Company as being a one stop shop, they take the stress out of having to deal with a vehicle problem” - NSMM “The best & cheapest service I get in Dargaville” - Keith Burgess

“Our home is quite out of the ordinary, with a lot of odd angles to cover. It certainly isn’t a case of simply laying square pieces of carpet. Gerard and the team did a great job, making sure the flooring looked perfect throughout, with no areas where joins were apparent. We were very happy with the outcome.” - K, Dargaville.

Keeping our wheels turning u by Andy Bryenton
Nobody likes a flat tyre — at best, it’s a hassle, at worst, a dangerous or expensive problem. Bob Ballantine has been fixing problems of the steel-belted and vulcanised kind for many years now, first getting into the tyre industry in the
1970s. And while the technology used to craft road-going rubber has improved immensely since those days, the skill and dedication needed to back up

the big brands in tyres has remained the same. Today, Bob, along with his partner Kathee, manager Damian and tyre technician Wayne make up the team at Carters Tyre Service’s new Dargaville branch. It’s a familiar world for all four under the new white and blue signage, but the first time that Bob has stepped up to the plate to run his own tyre business, after decades of experience all over the north. The busy workshop on Normanby Street — which used to fly the Beaurepaires flag — caters to all manner of on-road and off-road vehicles, covering everything from small passenger cars to big rigs. Road freight, forestry, livestock haulage — all of these vital industries need good tyres to keep the regional economy rolling, and
in a raft of industries where downtime spells disaster, a reliable fleet service on call when you need it is the key to success. Bob and his team are always ready to fire up their big blue ‘rescue truck’ and swing into action, making sure that a flat tyre doesn’t become a major headache for the webwork of logistics that supports our primary industries. Meanwhile, on site, they can source new tyres for ‘anything which rolls on wheels’, from powerful Harley-Davidson motorcycles down to garden wheelbarrows. With a change of livery and some new faces, Dargaville’s latest new business proves that progress can be a fine thing. So long as, like Bob and his team, that change serves to bring years of practical experience to the service of the driving public. ¢

Heavy duty diesel rolls out u by Andy Bryenton
Kiwi farms run on diesel power — from burly utes to rugged tractors. And now a new diesel UTV brings that power to even more jobs around the farm. Adding to its already impressive range of models, Polaris have announced the impending arrival of the 2015 Ranger 1000 Diesel HD (Heavy Duty) — built specifically for the New Zealand and Australian markets. That HD tag indicates the inclusion of a suite of heavy duty upgrades, beefing up the Ranger for the hard knocks Kiwi farming is famous for. Add in electronic power steering and engine braking with 4-Wheel descent control to combat New Zealand’s hilly terrain, and this dieselpowered workhorse begins to look like just what the doctor ordered. The 2015 Ranger 1000 Diesel HD receives a number of upgrades over the 2014 model, including being built on the more modern Ranger XP platform. Styling has been given a fast-forward too, and under all that rakish bodywork
sits a powerful 1,028cc Diesel Engine, up from 900 cc in the previous iteration. A massive 110 Amp Alternator is bolted to this diesel mill, cranking out the kind of power usually associated with utes. And a new, tough cab frame keeps riders safe, even in the worst conditions. With upgrades to the chassis, the Ranger 1000 Diesel HD now shares the same attributes which have made the Ranger XP 900 a top choice for New Zealand farmers. This new model also boasts innovations such as a restyled cockpit for driver comfort, dual A-Arm front suspension for a smoother ride, and a larger 37.6 Litre fuel tank for longer trips between fill ups. The 1,028cc Kohler Diesel under the hood is a 3 cylinder overhead cam liquidcooled symphony of power. This proven, high performance mill utilises indirect
