In the wake of the Christchurch mosques mass shooting tragedy, Mayor Jason Smith has led Kaipara’s expressions of sympathy and solidarity with the city, as Dargaville church and community leaders work towards a service and vigil. Mayor Smith has written the following to Christchurch Mayor, Leanne Dalziel on behalf of the Kaipara community. ‘Tena koe e Mayor Dalziel, ‘On behalf of the people of Kaipara District, please accept our heartfelt condolences at this dark time following the mosque terror events of recent days. ‘No words of mine can attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss for Christchurch that must seem almost overwhelming. Your community is hurting again. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Christchurch, we stand with you. We stand in solidarity with you to mourn the loss of lives, the loss of innocence here, to hold the hurt and to reject the hate. ‘What the world needs now is love. The Te Aroha waiata we sing so frequently at Kaipara District Council and in our community clearly expresses a simple message of hope. “Te aroha, te whakapono, me te rangimarie, tatou tatou e.” (Love, faith and peace to all people). ‘The tragic events in Christchurch remind us of the importance of the simple grace of this message. Please carry this forward as we will do in Kaipara. ‘Resilience of Christchurch citizens has been tested in the past, and we have been watching and cheering

Planting project planned New route for u by Jill Dickie
Plans are being set to plant 15,000 metres of the banks of the Northern Wairoa river in native trees and shrubs as part of the nationwide Million Metres project. Corporate entities and private individuals are participating in the project, looking after the future of New Zealand waterways.

The Kauri Museum
With the western end of the Matakohe deviation and bridge replacement now sealed and operating for traffic in both directions, there is a new roading layout in operation, with the former access route to Matakohe Road east and The Kauri Museum now closed.
p The Million Metres Cycle Ride team collectively cycled a million metres in the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in November 2018
The purpose of the planting project is to reduce sediment and bacteria levels in the Northern Wairoa River and its tributaries. Significant experience and knowledge are being drawn from such groups as Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group, local hapu groups and The Sustainable Business Network in working with landowners. “The project sites on the river are being determined by the partnership and public planting dates during winter months will be announced,” said spokesperson for Northern Wairoa Freshwater Improvement Project, Milly Farquhar. Individuals and businesses have donated towards the project, buying five metres for $20 to 125 metres for $500.
Some have participated in fundraising efforts like a group of cyclists taking on the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in 2018, lifting the tally by $5,000 by cycling 1,080,000 metres. Another generous donor has contributed a $20,000 match funding target, whereby anyone making a commitment will have their donation matched 100 per cent. “We’ve had individuals and businesses, locally and from all over New Zealand, supporting this project,” said project lead for Million Metres, Georgina Hart. “People’s energy and enthusiasm for restoring this river are inspirational.” More information is available at millionmetres.org.nz. ¢ COME ON DOWN & ENJOY AN EVENING OF

p The new roading layout at Matakohe
“Access from SH12 to the museum will be via the new intersection at Matakohe West Road, rather than across Anderson’s Bridge,” said New Zealand Transport Agency media manager Darryl Walker. “The new intersection is much safer and wider for vehicles turning on to or off SH12. It has merge and slip lanes and full street lighting.” New traffic signs will be placed at 400 metres and then 100 metres to
indicate the new access. Museum visitors travelling westwards will traverse the 1.8 kilometres of new roading to rejoin SH12, on to Matakohe Road west then back eastwards to the museum. There is also a new accessway into Ararua Road with the elimination of the old section of SH12 and one-way bridges with the eastern section of the highway and its new bridge expected to open to traffic later next month. ¢

Seaweek at Baylys
New exhibition in Mangawhai
u by Jill Dickie
A new exhibition, Frame of Mind, has opened at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery incorporating works from seven accomplished artists, each with their own distinctive style.
The Baylys Beach Society held a fun family afternoon on Saturday, March 2, to celebrate and recognise national Seaweek, an annual event, which promotes education about the marine environment. At Ripiro Beach organisers ensured visitors enjoyed a fun and friendly atmosphere.
p Edie Chappell, Marina Bagley, Nicola Everett, Ngaire Evans, Barbara Cope and Jan Grover join with Mary-Anne Boyd in opening the new exhibition p The scavenger hunt was a highlight at the Baylys Beach Sea Week family day
More than 100 people of all ages participated in the free day, which included a range of displays about the local marine environment, quizzes, beach games, sand sculpting and surf lifesaving demonstrations. A scavenger hunt organised by Waikato University Toheroa researchers proved popular, as were the free horse rides and the newest addition, a limbo competition. “As with previous BBS Seaweek beach days the comments from the public were consistent in saying the highlight was seeing families and friends playing and laughing together,
meeting new people and running into friends,” said Cheryl Carmichael BBS Chairperson. During the afternoon a routine patrol by four Northland Fisheries officers provided an opportunity for visitors to ask questions about their role in monitoring the area and how to become an honorary officer. Communities nationwide take part in the New Zealand Association for Environment Education’s Seaweek, sharing information and empowering people to recognise and encourage behaviours to ensure marine sustainability. ¢

The exhibition is open 10am to 3pm daily until Wednesday, March 20. ¢

Surf-riders at Mangawhai
Network nearing completion
The annual Logger Heads, traditional longboards surfing contest, has been held at Mangawhai attracting enthusiasts from around the country.
Mangawhai Village and the remaining part of the Dargaville township will be the next to connect to the Northpower Fibre network. Chief executive, Darren Mason, says the company is continuing to accelerate the expansion in 12 towns across Kaipara and Whangarei with many areas ahead of schedule. “We are all working really hard to bring world-class fibre broadband to our regional towns much quicker than planned. “Our aim is to be able to ensure that our towns can connect in the shortest possible time frame, which will allow residents and business to get online faster,” said Mason. Mangawhai Village will be released in two stages, the first stage in midApril and the second stage a month later, with the three build stages in Dargaville East due for completion in May, June and July. It will bring a further 1,090 people able to connect to Northpower Fibre. The Mangawhai Heads area is also getting UFB with the first part
p Contestants line up at Mangawhai’s surf contest
“This year saw the strongest field of entries in both the women’s and junior division, with a bunch of new faces also taking to water in the Open Logger and Old Mal divisions,” said spokesman, Tony Baker. “Waves (for March 9) were pretty challenging at times, but as with every year there were some magical moments of tradition, style and classic longboarding.” In the juniors, Nat Fitt (Orewa) claimed his second consecutive win ahead of Mangawhai Heads’ Billy Whelan. “In the Old Mal Division, featuring pre1970s longboards, it was Matt Newdick
(Auckland) who managed to snag the final and claim his maiden Old Mal title. “The event saw over a dozen women’s entries. In the final it was 2017 champ Nicky Wellington (Auckland) who showed why she is still one of the top lady sliders in NZ, picking off some great peelers and spending more time on the nose than off it. “The Open Logger was a hotly contested affair, but it was Paul Culpan (Auckland) who eventually won with his classic and traditional approach towards logging. Culpan is a regular in the North and showed true class to take a maiden victory in the event.” ¢
being ready by the end of the year, providing fibre connections for another 626 people. “One thing I would urge sports fans to consider if they haven’t already, is that they go to northpower.com/fibre and see if they are able to connect. You will want to be connected to fibre for the best streaming experience of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, so I would encourage anyone to quickly contact their preferred retail service provider or register to connect at northpower. com/fibre/register-your-interest,” said Mason. Mason also suggests that with customer demand to join the network, people may experience delays if they wait to get their connection requests in. ¢
Change to fire season The fire season status changed from Prohibited to Restricted on Monday, March 18. A permit is still required to light a fire in the open air, which may include restrictions and conditions for fire
types such as campfires, bonfires and land clearing fires. Authorised burns not requiring a permit include gas or charcoal barbecues, braziers, cultural fires and drum incinerators.

One of the newest swimmers to join the Lake Taupo 40.2 club is Mangawhai osteopath, Jacqueline Schirmer. The club is named after the distance of the marathon swim, 40.2 kilometres. In the early morning hours on March 6, Jacqueline began swimming and 15 hours 18 minutes later, arrived at her destination.
p Jacqueline Schirmer has completed her swim of Lake Taupo
The Lake Taupo swim is one of the eight swims in the Still Water 8 series, which includes distance swims on lakes around the world, including Loch Ness in Scotland, Lake Tahoe in the USA, Lake Ontario in Canada and Lake Titicaca in Peru. Jacqueline swam another of the eight, Lake Windemere in England, in 2011. Jacqueline says she trained hard for almost two years while working five days a week. Her schedule also included three gym sessions and swimming six days, with just one day off training. Being used to a disciplined and focussed lifestyle helped keep

her training on-track, though she acknowledges it hasn’t all been easy. “There’s been no time for anything else. Running Mangawhai Osteopathy as the business owner; being an Osteopath, training and keeping my relationship alive, it’s been incredibly hard.” In spite of being asked not to, Phil advised when they reached the halfway point, and Jacqueline says she had thoughts of doing stand up comedy next; though her friends apparently, don’t think that is a good idea. She is unsure what her next challenge will be. ¢

Approximately 600 mature self-seeded original Radiata pines sitting on 5.27ha of easy contour, this property has a long road verge and would be easily cleared. Some have been pruned at 1 yr old, others not at all and would make quality pulp. Two Macrocarpa trees are also ready for milling and there are pockets of old Black Wattle, and some grazing, with power and phone cabling along the roadside. On a school bus run and less than 15 mins to Dargaville.

The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement, this introduces fresh aggregate into the failure in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness. We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit whilst traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers, and to prevent damage to the repairs. We understand that there is a degree of inconvenience caused by these works, however this inconvenience is significantly extended if we are required to return to any sites that require repairing.
Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information.

Festive tour event
A United New Zealand
u by Jill Dickie
u by Matt King, Northland’s Member of Parliament
A fun and social event is planned in Dargaville for Saturday, March 23, when the BDO cycle tour participants arrive in town for the night. The Northern Wairoa Boating Club area will take on a festive atmosphere with More FM presenting Wheels Dargaville.
p Cyclists lined up ready to go in the 2017 tour
Dargaville Community Development Board spokesperson, Janeen Hunter, said all residents are encouraged to attend and spend time enjoying the entertainment. Around 450 cyclists and their support crews will descend upon Dargaville at the end of the third leg of the cycle tour, before completing their journey to Whangarei the next day. They will travel down Hokianga Road, greeted by their names chalked on the road, to finish at the band rotunda in Victoria Street. From there the cyclists head to the boating club for refreshments, local
bands will be performing, a dinner will be available and a kids’ entertainment area is also planned. A prize-giving ceremony will begin at 6.30pm. In the lead-up, to the event, local signwriter, Trevor Moss, will be drawing caricatures of cyclists on shop windows along Victoria Street. 2019 is the 19th edition of the popular event and will follow Northland’s fully sealed Twin Coast Discovery Highway, beginning in Whangarei and travelling through Paihia and Opononi before Dargaville then returning to Whangarei. ¢
On Friday, March 15 New Zealand was shaken to its core. An unspeakable act of violence not only tore families apart in Christchurch, but it has ripped through the hearts of all New Zealanders. Our first priority has been supporting the families, the victims and the Islamic community of New Zealand — they are Kiwis, and we stand beside them and condemn this horrific act. That was not something that happened to just the Islamic community or only to Christchurch. It has happened to all New Zealanders, and all New Zealanders are grieving. The National Party stands in solidarity with the Prime Minister and the Government in condemning the horrific and violent terrorist attack in Christchurch. Our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers go to all those directly affected by yesterday’s events, and to the wider Canterbury community. We share your deep sorrow. The values of this country, our beliefs, our tolerance for one another, and our ability to get along with each other have made New Zealand the
type of place where people want to live, and it should, and will, remain so. We stand with and support the New Zealand Islamic community. New Zealand is your home. No one in this country should live in fear no matter their race or religion, their politics or their beliefs. I also want to thank the emergency responders, our police and our medical staff who worked tirelessly, continue to work tirelessly, to ensure we feel safe and who are doing all they can for the wounded. They are heroes, as are the victims who risked their lives to save others. We will remember them and their bravery. We are still coming to terms with the worst massacre our country has ever seen. Moreover, during times of horror, New Zealanders rise up and stand together. We are doing that now. Nga mihi Matt

An intriguing new exhibition My View of the World opened at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville on Friday, March 15, created by 28-year-old blind artist, Ming Ming Edgar. Born blind in China and adopted as a seven-year-old by Dargaville resident, Gaynor Edgar, Ming Ming was introduced to art while attending Dargaville High School. Gaynor says the teachers there continually put challenges in front of him and he met them every time. Ming Ming created most of the 30 to 40 canvases in the exhibition while attending the Stepping Stones group in Whangarei. Working first with a background, he then develops his works using paints, brushes, fingers and pieces of cardboard, creating a colourful and welltextured piece of artistry. “He is incredible, he just takes on everything that’s put in front of him and gets it done in his quiet way,” said Gaynor.

Our Northland - Tō Tātou Taitokerau Stories and updates on the great work happening around the region to help our environment, economy and people thrive. Brought to you by Northland Regional Council.
Are you an
environmental champion? Entries are now open for Northland Regional Council’s new Environmental Awards, which recognise the people and organisations working hard to protect our region’s environment. Deputy Chairman David Sinclair says the awards are a chance to highlight the ‘can-do’ attitudes and remarkable contributions Northlanders are making to help our environment thrive. “It’s about kaitiakitanga in action, which we think deserves to be celebrated.” David says caring for Northland’s many communities and unique environment is a massive job and one the council simply can’t do by itself. “Fortunately, all over Taitokerau we’ve got vast numbers of committed individuals, groups, schools, tangata whenua and businesses collectively aiming to make a real difference.” Examples include efforts to get rid of pests and help native life flourish, planting waterways and wetlands and implementing soil conservation practices to improve the way land is managed.
David says the awards will feature eight categories to cover a broad range of environmental enhancement projects and activities, with a ninth ‘Supreme Award’ presented to the most outstanding entry.
The award categories cover environmental action in:
“It’s free to enter and you can nominate yourself, or someone else with their approval,” says David.

Entrants can include individuals, community groups, schools, tangata whenua, businesses and leaders. Projects/activities/contributions must be located within Northland and demonstrate significant benefit to the region’s environment.
These awards are about celebrating our environmental champions – if that sounds like you or someone you know, I’d encourage you to enter.”

Supporting our communities
Graeme, whose role was to support the head of the emergency response, says nothing can really prepare you for these situations until you experience them first hand. “We learn so much every time we are part of an emergency, which helps us to prepare and be ready if ever Northland has an emergency.” Shona worked with the Red Cross and other welfare teams to assist evacuees.
Northland Regional Council staff Claire Nyberg (left) and Shona Morgan (right) with Fiona Fliss (centre) of Red Cross.
From raging bush fires, to searching for a tiny, but potentially devastating fly – when the call comes, our staff are ready and able to spring into action. Northland Regional Council staff are often asked to help out in other parts of the country, where their skills or expertise are needed. Lately, we’ve been lending a hand on two largescale responses – the Nelson Tasman fires, and the fruit fly incursion on Auckland’s North Shore. Three members of our Northland Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) team – CDEM manager Graeme McDonald and officers Shona Morgan and Claire Nyberg – recently spent a week supporting the Tasman bush fires emergency response team.
“The 13-hour shifts can be tough on you both mentally and physically, but it also grows your own personal resilience so you are better able to assist those in need. It’s great to feel you are making a difference.” Closer to home, our staff were also asked to help out after the discovery of a fruit fly in Auckland triggered a large biosecurity response. His familiarity with the Biosecurity Act – and the powers available in an incursion – meant Biosecurity Officer Curtis Harris could step in as a surveillance manager in the response. In this role Curtis has been part of a large operation which includes setting and monitoring traps, collecting and checking fruit, and liaising with a range of agencies and the teams on the ground. With a range of skills and experience right across Northland Regional Council, it’s great to be able to lend a hand when the call for help comes from other regions.
Funding boost for Hokianga cultural centre Local councillor Justin Blaikie is ‘absolutely thrilled’ with a $500,000 Northland Regional Council contribution to a planned $8m-plus Hokianga cultural centre. The ‘Manea Footprints of Kupe’ project – the brainchild of Te Hua o te Kawariki Trust – would see a cultural centre built to celebrate the journeys of the legendary Polynesian explorer Kupe. Kauri Coast Dotterel Watch member, Georgie Read, examines dog tracks discovered winding among the shorebird footprints at Hokianga’s Waimamaku Beach.
This year’s Seaweek theme is ‘Tiakina o Tātou Mōana – Care for our Seas’ and while officially the week-long event ran in early March, Georgie (from Waimamaku) is just one of thousands of Northlanders working year-round in all sorts of ways to care for the region’s precious coast and sea. The Northland Regional Council is proud to play its part too, and can often be found working alongside community members, including just south of the Hokianga, where Waimamaku Beach Company has fenced off wetlands (ranked in Northland’s Top 150) and undertaken dune planting, with funding from the council’s Environment Fund. Endangered Northern New Zealand dotterels also nest on the beach and, in the last year, dune and dotterel protection work has been started there by local residents with support from the council and DOC. (This breeding season the group has fenced off the nesting areas and put up signs.) The regional council set up CoastCare Northland in 2005 to support community-based groups like these to protect and restore Northland’s dune systems. CoastCare group activities include planting, providing beach access, fencing, signage, pest and weed control and monitoring. There are currently over 30 active groups around the region and during last year’s planting season, more than 14,500 dune plants were planted at 16 sites around the region.

Women in business CARRYING ON A TRADITION OF QUALITY The Fannon’s name has been a fixture of the main street in Dargaville for so long that the town just wouldn’t be the same without it. Generations of locals have turned to this traditional and elegant menswear outfitters, seeking sartorial advice and something for all occasions.
Accounting at the speed of Business
So when the opportunity arose to keep the name flying high, as long-time proprietor Jack Fannon retired from the helm, the current management were enthusiastic about not just preserving a piece of Kaipara heritage, but also continuing a legacy of quality. Entrepreneurial new owner Kate Smith has been joined by Eunice Karpuk to make up the team who are improving local men’s wardrobes, one style choice at a time. Not only are the pair undaunted by the challenge of being women in an industry which focuses on traditional menswear —
they have taken the collection at Fannons to new heights, introducing modern flair and unique touches to a business which still attracts customers from far and wide for their renowned old-fashioned service and attention to detail. It’s the best of the old and the new, and these women in business are dedicated to making Dargaville look sharp.

y background has been managing large groups of staff in the hospitality industry. I’ve been managing people for almost 25 years now, but moving to Dargaville certainly made me re-think my career path 14 years ago. How could I do this in a smaller community? The role I now have at Kaurilands Skills Centre Trust answered that for me. Although we are a medium sized company now ( in New Zealand terms) it’s been a learning journey to down size the team that report to me. However, I must emphasise that I am not a one-woman band. It’s the whole staff team, the people we support, the local community and all of our networks that makes Kaurilands what it is. Kaurilands provides a holistic meaningful life for 20 adults with Intellectual Disabilities. We are the door openers (for want of a better word) as our role is to support these amazing people to enjoy life to the fullest and have the same opportunities as any-one else in the community. Our founders set some strong foundations for us, so it’s important that the future of our people
is safe-guarded to empower themselves, enjoy their lives, now, as working adults and long into the future as they age. Kaurilands continues to advocate for our people’s equality in society, and not accepting discrimination, no matter what they are doing.

Sharkys became a growing challenge, year by year, but with the support of her husband and parents it has developed into the Sharkys you see today. The whole range of Can-Am off-road vehicles made quite an impact at the recent Northland Field Days, with upgrades to many of the old favourites and some new surprises as well. The contingent from the big North American manufacturer, including our local teams from Kaipara dealerships, was impressed with the response, but there is even more to come. That’s because the best way to truly appreciate the feel of any off-road machine be it an Outlander quad bike, a Defender or Commander side-by-side or even the powerful Maverick off-road sports machine, is to drive it. Field days provided a neat showcase of all the tech under the hood, but when you really want to know a vehicle, you have to fire up the engine! That’s why Can-Am has put together a roadshow, which is touring the country next month, visiting locations all over the rural map to allow potential riders and drivers to get behind the wheel for real. The full lineup will be on display, from the rugged farm-ready power of the Outlander L, through to variants of the Defender and Commander with their multi-role capacity and big towing power, and crowned by the sheer velocity of the trophy-winning Maverick. Locally, our dealers have banded together to present this roadshow in the town of Hikurangi, where representatives from Randell’s Can-Am and Poland Motors will join host Shane Rouse in the open field for trials, tests and demonstrations all day on April 2.

It’s a chance to enjoy a barbecue lunch and talk business with a very knowledgeable team who will be assembled to answer any questions. Of course, many of those queries will be answered easily with a test drive, displaying the advancements Can-Am
have made in power and handling for 2019. There’s also the chance to win an Outlander 450 just by coming along. Mark the date on your calendar and take a closer look at the range everyone’s talking about! ¢

Classic day out in Dargaville u by Andy Bryenton
Early showers did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of Kaipara car enthusiasts as they congregated in Dargaville for the third annual Hot Rods and Harleys festival on Saturday, March 9. The weather soon turned for the better with hot sunshine the order of the rest of the day, all the better to illuminate acres of custom paint and chrome. There were plenty of surprises among the varied selection of vehicles on display at Greg Smith Engineering’s premises, a venue, which proved to be a perfect fit, with cars spilling over into a second fenced area and a large number of motorcycles arriving around noon to also find their place amid the festivities. Alongside Kiwi icons such as Ford Zephyrs one of which boasted some of the most detailed airbrush paintwork imaginable and HQ Holdens, there were
