Kaipara boosts cancer funds by Paul Campbell
Teams from Kaipara joined others from around Northland last weekend, to raise more than $80,000 for the Cancer Society by walking the equivalent distance from New Zealand to London
Among the 800 walkers who gathered at the Northland Relay For Life, were a number of Kaipara teams, including Otamatea and two teams from Paparoa, Matakohe, Whakapirau and further afield who camped for 24 hours at Otaika Sports Park. “We came home very tired, but very happy,” said Kaipara Scraps team member, Sharon Powell. “We clocked up 1,274 kilometres and, more importantly, raised over $5,000, thanks to generous local sponsorship. Over the relay, we had from one to five people on the track at any one time, enabling us to clock up the distance. The track was 400 metres and, just to make it more interesting, so to speak, the organisers would announce from time to time that it was time to change direction and go the other way around.”
The Otamatea hotel revisited
The Northland Cancer Society’s Event organiser for Northland, Paulette Scrooby, said the weekend event was a huge success. “We had a target of ‘walking to the London Olympics’ and we did that and then some, surpassing 50,000 kilometres. Our estimate is that $80,000 has been raised but the books are open until the end of April for pledges to come in.”

Which is the right option?
A cancer survivors dinner is held before the main event and 140 survivors took to the track for an honorary lap to open the relay. “These are our VIP guests,” added Paulette. The Relay for Life concept was founded in the US and events are held annually in 23 countries and across New Zealand, where nearly $3 million was raised last year.

Grey Power call to replace council by Paul Campbell
Page 5
Kaipara Grey Power has called on the government to oust the Kaipara District Council and replace its functions with a statutory manager
The move reflects similar concerns expressed by the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association, and Farmers of New Zealand, in the face of the council’s $85 million dollar debt, the highest per capita of any council in New Zealand, and its projected 31.5 per cent rates rise. A motion raised by Gary Hooker at a meeting in Dargaville strongly opposed the rates rise and called on the Minister for Local Government, Nick Smith, to replace the council with a statutory manager, a move echoed by Grey Power in other regions where local council debt is skyrocketing.
Pages 8–9
Kaipara Kai & Fun Festival
The motion was approved ‘that this meeting of Kaipara Grey Power being well aware of the financial inability of most ratepayers to meet extraordinary rate demands, strongly opposes significant rate increases being contemplated by Kaipara District Council as well as the unnecessary waste of ratepayers funds on the District Plan process, and calls upon the Minister of Local Government to urgently replace Kaipara District Council with a statutory manager’. continued on page 3 . . .

Northpower invites share ownership submissions Northpower Trustees, Richard Drake, Sheena McKenzie, Bill Rossiter and Ross Provan braved Monday’s storm to meet with consumers as part of the five-yearly round of consultation regarding share ownership. A document ‘2012 Review of Future Ownership’ was presented to the meeting and the results of the last few years were discussed. In particular, the trustees answered questions about the importance of building the contracting side of the business. By separating this away from the lines side, the trustees explained it was possible to increase profitability and returns to the members. Discussions also covered the difficult

Grey Power call to replace council The meeting discussed concerns for how pensioners will afford rates rises and agreed that for many, the only discretionary money was for food and that was where savings to pay the rates would have to come from. In other developments: • In the face of local government debt, which has ballooned from $2 billion to $8 billion across the country, Nick Smith has sharply brought forward plans for a major shake-up to rein in rising rates and debt. Significant changes to the legislation were signed off by Cabinet on Monday with Mayor Neil Tiller joining mayors and council chief executives summoned from around the country to Wellington for briefings over this week. • The Office of the Auditor-General has announced the terms of reference for the inquiry into the Mangawhai EcoCare wastewater scheme, which is responsible for a large proportion of KDC debt. All ratepayers that have a complaint about any aspect of EcoCare are encouraged to make submissions, with any complaint treated in confidence. • A revitalised Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association says it is embarking on ‘a massive’ membership drive. Newly elected chairman, Ron Manderson, says this will be accompanied by a fund — seeking campaign with the association determined to become a unifying body to help deal with Kaipara’s local government financial crisis, and the projected increases in rates. “We will look to a public meeting in due course to enlighten the community on what action can best assist in this,” he added. The KCRA annual meeting saw Don Elliot elected vice-chairman, and Graham Jones as secretary-treasurer.
A mural depicting the journey from London to New Zealand by the Albertlanders, the pioneers who settled much of the Northern Kaipara, is to go on permanent display in Wellsford. It depicts three scenes — the embarkation aboard ship, the long sea voyage and the arrival at Port Albert, which was to have become a major town. The 150th anniversary of the Albertlanders is being celebrated at Easter Weekend with a wide variety of events. Celebrations in other locations are also being planned for later dates, including at Paparoa on Labour weekend and at Maungaturoto next year. The chairman of the 150th Albertland celebrations, contractor Peter Levet, said the organising committee came up with the mural idea and he approached Rodney College with the idea.
“The school took it on board and decided it was a project for the end of the year. It was carried out by Felicity and Laura Pride,” said Peter. “As it involved a cost, I approached members of my family, my parents and brother Gordon and we decided to sponsor the work as our anniversary contribution.” The mural will be displayed at the re-union at the Albertland Hall and later it will go on permanent display in Memorial Park near the the Albertland Heritage Centre or the new library which is to begin construction in May,” Peter added. Another Albertland art work is also in the offing. “In a very generous gesture, Kerry Strongman from the Te Hana Arts Factory, is working on a swamp kauri carving to commemorate the event.”
Kaipara Art Awards 2012 The Kaipara District Community Art Awards will take place at The Kauri Museum, running from August 31 to September 30. This was decided at a meeting at the museum attended by representatives of the Mangawhai Arts Association, the Dargaville Arts Association and the Kaipara District Council. The judging and announcement of the winners will take place on the opening night, then the awards exhibition will run for the rest of September. Further details will be released as they become available.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.
The Otamatea hotel revisited by Paul Campbell At Easter weekend, April 6 to 9, the Northern Kaipara will host an influx of visitors to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Albertland. The celebrations will be centred on Wellsford, Port Albert and Te Hana, as well as on the waters of the Kaipara itself, with boat trips to sail down memory lane. While investigating points of interest on the harbour, I came across an account of the first pub in the area — the Otamatea Hotel. This was an enterpise started by Joseph Masefield. He was in fact a predecessor of the Albertlanders, arriving in the 1850s, a decade before the organised immigrants. However, he returned to Scotland to collect his wife and son, and with a canny eye, took up an Albertland offer of 100 acres of land, and came back with the movement on the good ship, William Miles. He rejected his land grant as poor terrain, and instead purchased property at Oahau, now Batley.
He began a trading store in a bark hut, while timber was pit-sawn for the big house below the hill, later to become the Otamatea hotel, the first licenced premises for many a mile. The trading store continued and big business was established with the local Maori, who at the time were selling large blocks of land to the colonial government. After each sale, they would descend on Masefield’s store and hotel. In the Albertland museum records, it states they would buy out his entire stock. ‘Bags of flour, barrels of ships biscuits, cakes of soap, tea, salt candles, tobacco, clay pipes, spades axes ‘ . . . the list went on. As well, settlers from Matakohe, Paparoa, Pahi and Maungaturoto obtained their supplies of food, clothing and tools there, between uncertain cutter and steamer trips. On the Oahau hill, a flag was hoisted on the arrival of the English mails aboard the steamer Prince Alfred, which came from Onehunga once a month.
Batley House — on the foreshore of the Kaipara Harbour for almost 150 years
Masefield also ventured into orchards — apples, plums and pears — and then by progression a canning factory. Then came farming and merino sheep and cattle on 200 acres at Batley. The canning operation later moved on to mullet, and with the purchase of a facory at Helensville, the Masefiled line expanded to beef, mutton, fruit, jam and plum puddings! The Masefield exploits would fill a book on their own. Speaking of books, today’s occupant at Batley, with her husband Rex, is author, Rae Roadley. She has the last word: “This year, Rex’s family will have been at Batley for a century, and I’ve been here a decade, plus a few years. “It’s a privilege living in this house where people have walked for almost 150 years — and it’s great knowing who they were and some of the details of their lives. History and the sense that people have lived rich lives here surrounds us daily. “The mornings are especially magical. I’ve taken countless photos of sun rises looking up the Otamatea River, past the marae where Reverend Gittos built his church and had his mission.” This Easter, the Otamatea River will be busy with Albertland descendents, and no doubt many of their cameras will be turned upon the grand old residence Rae shares with Rex, a cradle of history.

Maungaturoto Primary School PTA’s major fundraiser kicked off with a gallop and roar
5
On Saturday February 18, 56 riders took to the hills of McKays’ farm in Maungaturoto armed with smiles and ready to face the tranquil trek before them The trek rode over open farm land, through rivers and through beautiful bush to advance on a hearty lunch and well deserved cuppa. Riders then took off again to venture back into bush and open farm land to end the day where they began. Organisers would like to thank the Horse marshals who saw that nobody ventured off. Thanks to Dee Millen, Anna Van Harlingen, Mike Smales, Robert Whitehead, Bev Small and Karina Allen for doing this. On Sunday February 19, it was the motorbikes and quads’ turn to take on the Trail Ride track on McKays’ farm. This year the organisers reversed the track and added a new track. The fully supervised kids’ track was a hit once again with food and drink available for riders, and spectators enjoyed a beautiful summer’s day looking over pristine farmland and enjoying the fresh air. Over $5000 was raised over the whole weekend and this will go towards new initiatives for Maungaturoto Primary School. There are many many people to thank however the whole day would not be made possible without the use of Don and Jacque McKay’s farm for the entire weekend. This weekend took a lot of organising and couldn’t happen without the entire support of the PTA committee members and Primary School teachers. Thank you John Linton and Mark Flannagan for the hours of marking and mulching of the Trail Ride track, Julian and Jason Allen for animal control and helping with fences and marking the horse track. A huge thank you to Kyle from Maungaturoto Motorcycles for the Diesel Ranger UTV (side by side) which was used to help mark out and also
Letter to the Editor To the Editor, Kaipara Lifestyler . . . Firstly, It seems that a few more people are commencing to jump on the bandaid wagon and not before time. Whilst serving in the Armed Forces we were acutely made aware of a Form 664B. If willful damage was done by members to any equipment belonging to the Service then the miscreants were collectively fined to pay for it. In this case I would say that the same be applied to the KDC and all that were privy to the decisions and finances leading to the parlous financial mess we ratepayers find ourselves in. Fearless people like Messrs Guest, Rogan, Boonham and Larson have stood up against blind autocracy in the face of daunting odds. They have asked valid questions which have to be answered. Secondly Nick Smith’s laughable kneejerk reaction to Mr Rogan’s ‘Blackmail’ letter had this reader in stitches. How come practically everyone else I have spoken to could see it in a totally different context? His reaction to say the least was, in his befiddled brain somewhat ‘Nerotic’. I totally agree that there should be a smell of burning flesh — caused by those now sitting in their uncomfortable hotseats. Hopefully aiding an early exit.

MARCH 21 - 2012
by Mark Farnsworth Which is the right option? It should have as no surprise to anyone that local government reform is back on the agenda in Northland. For those of us who have taken the time to reconsider the basic question: — Is it time to implement a structured reform of local government governance and the delivery of services in Northland? — it would have quickly been determined that the externalities that now exist are driving the need for change so the simple answer has to be yes. In addressing local government reform we should be very mindful of the need to remember the hard lessons of the recent McKinley Douglas/Trapski Brash process. If we ignore those lessons then the region, once more, risks wasting a considerable amount of time, effort and dollars on repeating a process that ends up with the status quo or an enforced reorganisation, and the generation of a considerable amount of ill will. What does Northland need? Two of the key issues concern me: 1. The blind fixation on the single solution — that is that the formation of a unitary council is the right answer. 2. Advocating a solution without first a determination of the actual problems to be fixed and a consideration of the alternatives. Are two unitary councils really the right prescription for Northland? Since we are restarting the consideration with a very limited consideration of alternatives (one or two unitary councils for Northland) that question cannot be answered with degree of certainty. Given that we have only on chance at getting it we should look at, and objectively consider, the merits of other models asking the question:
Images from Albertland
which alternative best fits Northland’s unique criteria? How should Mãori be represented? We are challenged to agree on the best fit. The viewpoint on the need for a structured approach to changing the way local government services are delivered in Northland is self evident. The region needs: 1. A single vision development;
for
strategic
2. A simplified planning structure for the region; 3. A single rating base for the region. It is very evident now that a hard political push is on to effect change as soon as possible, while I accept that change must happen, a strong note of caution is required, the imposition of a solution without due consideration of the alternatives, and giving Northlanders a meaningful say in how local government will be shaped, may result in a scenario that eventually creates more problems than the ones it was put in place to resolve. We should also be very mindful of the golden rule of reorganisations:“The cost of the new whole is always more than the sum of the costs of the combining component parts” Will Northlanders actively resist a change in the local government which is imposed on them via a political agenda? That remains to be seen — but I think not. Northlanders have had guts full of their political leaders fighting over what they perceive as just power and a control of resources.

WAIPOUA FOREST
r. Coates of Kaipara asked the Minister of Lands whether it is his intention to offer for sale from Waipoua Forest and adjoining Crown Lands its approximately 300,000,000 feet of milling timber. N.B. This is the largest kauri timber forest left in New Zealand. Encroaching settlement means difficulty must be experienced in protecting this timber from fire. Moreover, unless timber is procurable, several mills employing labour will be forced to close. It would also release 40,000 acres for further settlement.
Mr. Massey replied that Waipoua contains 22,000 acres and was investigated by Dr. Cockayne in 1908. His report states the desirability of preserving it in the state of nature. Government has no intention of selling the timber to cause the destruction of this unique national asset. Mr. Coates said that the whole block contained 44,000 acres looked after by two caretakers who could do nothing to save the timber from fire. He suggested that the kauri park at Waima be preserved and Waipoua opened up for milling and settlement.

Kaipara’s Aranga School is among 27 additional Northland schools that will have access to faster broadband by July next year, under the Rural Broadband Initiative Northland MP Mike Sabin has welcomed the move. This prodigiously proportioned pumpkin was the pride of the Riverside Produce Markets last Thursday — a titanic vegetable grown by Nye from Starlight Organics (regular stallholders at the weekly event). Nye and her family used only organic means to cultivate this orange giant, which tipped the scales at an impressive 116 kilograms. Any way you cut it, that’s a big achievement! Pumpkins this size are usually grown for show only, as they lack the sweet taste and soft texture which make pumpkins of a more conventional size an autumn favourite… but there are many more delicious (and more easily handled) veges at the Riverside Markets each week for you to try.

It’s all of value to us. “We will happily pick up any scrap metal from your home or farm or it can be dropped off at the sports pavillion, which is the former rugby club building at the Paparoa Showgrounds, preferably close to the building.” Money raised from the drive will be used to upgrade the Paparoa Sports Pavillion.
“Schools will be able to share scarce resources like physics and IT teachers, and students will be able to take part in virtual classrooms and courses that might not be available at their own schools,” he said. “Faster internet will help connect our schools with the world and prepare students for living and working in the 21st century. Under the Rural Broadband Initative $300 million is being spent to connect more than 410,000 students at over 1500 schools around the country. “As well as making New Zealand schools some of the most connected in the world, the RBI also means rural businesses will be able to showcase their products to markets, access support websites, do their banking online and get business updates. They will be able to use the technology for environmental monitoring such as effluent and water control as well as to access urban services such as shopping. Our farms will have improved voice services too. By the end of 2015, 97.7 per cent of schools and 99.9 per cent of students will
receive ultra-fast fibre enabling speeds of 100 Mbps. The remaining schools, which are in the most remote locations, will receive a highspeed wireless or satellite connection.

A festival of fun and flavour
by Andy Bryenton
It’s that time of year again — some of the nation’s top names in culinary culture are coming to town for the Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival. And it’s not just local gourmands and foodies who have reason to celebrate — a host of entertainers are joining in to make this one of the hottest events on the Kaipara social calendar
This Saturday the fun kicks off with a huge festival of fine food and wine at Selwyn Park — plan for a day of leisurely browsing among the marquees as celebrity chef Alyson Gofton joins the best purveyors of tasty local and international fare for a celebration of flavour and creativity. You’ll find everything from savoury indulgences to sweet treats on offer, with tips for your own kitchen, side by side with world-class cuisine to try. Head on down to the riverside afterwards and check out what promises to be a massive attraction — as the sun sets, the biggest fireworks display Dargaville has ever seen will light up the sky, reflecting from the river and making the perfect end to a perfect day. That’s not all the festival has to offer, though — the very next week will see the Lighthouse play host to poet, raconteur and general Kiwi icon Mr Gary McCormick, presiding over a luxurious dinner that’s sure to be a highlight of the festival schedule. Gary is well known as a true all-round entertainer and his humorous stories and sharp wit will light up an evening of gourmet food and wine. At the same time the town hall will be thumping to the sounds of bass as some of the best hip hop dance crews entertain the crowds at the inaugural Big Night Out — a night of music, dance and turntable skills culminating with the arrival of champion hip hop crew Request in Dargaville. These superstars have taken on the best in the world and their fresh, original style has won them accolades from industry heavyweights as well as the title of world’s greatest. Don’t miss them! All up, it’s going to be a cracker fortnight of entertainment, food, wine and the finer things in life here in Dargaville. Come on down and join in the fun and let all our visitors from around New Zealand see some real Kaipara hospitality.

MARSDEN COVE’S SUMMER SECTION SALE
With winter approaching, there are probably many people out there contemplating a pile of firewood with weary trepidation. The demands of keeping a big, old house in the summer — what with lawns, repairs, gutters and gardens — are tough enough, but when the cold winds descend a large and empty home can feel like a burden . . . especially Cosy cottages create a rustic atmosphere for older people. For many, though, a lifetime of independence and self-reliance has formed a steadfast opinion about ‘moving into a home’. Indeed, many people now reach octogenarian status while still driving, playing sports and even working on the family farms they’ve built up over the years. That’s why there is a middle ground — one which can afford those of advancing years their own place, without the millstone of constant maintenance weighing them down. Not an ‘old folks home’ by any stretch of the imagination, but more akin to an exclusive gated community of independent homes . . . smaller, warmer, more secure but still private and self-contained. Riverdale is such a place — the first of its kind in Dargaville, though the concept is enjoying huge popularity in Auckland. At first glance Riverdale appears to be a modern subdivision of colonial-style houses, but the reality is that this small community is designed for those 55 and over, with security and ease of maintenance paramount. Living here means having your own home, but without the hassles — a modest weekly fee pays for water, broadband internet, groundskeeping, insurance and the like, making this an affordable option for those receiving a pension. There’s also a well appointed community hall shared by all the neighbours — a communal lounge with a kitchen, big-screen TV and a small library, such as you’d find in a resort hotel. Riverdale isn’t about pre-packaged meals, nurses or routines. It’s a cluster of practical town houses built to suit people who have worked hard and enjoyed life for many years, but now acknowledge that they’d much prefer to kick back, relax and not worry about things like cleaning gutters and chopping firewood. Come and take a look, and you may find this picturesque spot by the riverside just too good to pass up.

Lets Go Fishing An easier way to get out on the water Inflatable boats have been a popular choice for a whole range of maritime pursuits since their invention, forming the backbone of our coastal surf lifesaving fleet and even being employed (in their larger, rigid-hulled R.I.B. Form) by the military
Boats Safe, reliable and cost effective inflatables plus r.i.B.’s with tough and economical outboard motors.
Robust and easily portable, the modern inflatable boat is descended from this pedigree of search and rescue, military operations and the construction of storm-proof life rafts for bigger vessels. But unlike the strands of its engineering DNA, the role of Aakron’s inflatable boats is focussed primarily on fun.
+
Aakron boats is a New Zealand company exporting top-of-the-line inflatable boats and R.I.B.s to the United States and Australia — a company owned by the Darroch family, who were famous boatbuilders in colonial times. Bringing a history of nautical experience to the trade of designing and building modern inflatables, Aakron provide a very durable and safe range of small vessels which have been enthusiastically received by the international market. The perfect dinghy for fishing (that tough pontoon membrane can’t be popped by a sharp hook — it’ll take much more than that!) or as a tender for a bigger boat, Aakron inflatables have the advantage of being easily folded up and stowed away when not in use. A clever design featuring multiple inflatable cells and a v-shaped keel as part of the hull increase stability, and interlocking rigid floor plates form a stable platform. Built in rowlocks, towing points and oars provide one means of moving your inflatable about, but Aakron boats are made to be powered by a small to medium sized outboard — a range also provided by the Auckland company. With boats from a zippy two metres to a multi-purpose seven-metre model, you can pack 2, 5, 10, 30 or more horsepower to give your inflatable some get up and go.
If you’ve got a need for a small boat, either for work or play, and you’d like to take a look at what a good, rugged Kiwi inflatable boat can offer, you’ll also be pleasantly surprised by the price. With no import tax and duties it’s smarter to buy from a local firm. And locally to Dargaville you’ll find the whole range of Aakron boats and motors at Godfrey’s Mowers and Chainsaws — appropriately, your small engine specialists.

A modern vehicle still contacts the tarmac through four small patches of rubber, perhaps no wider than a ruler — and through these contact patches all that horsepower and your commands as a driver directly affect your vehicle’s ride. Basically — the best car in the world is rubbish without good tyres. And with winter storming down on us and a wet autumn ahead of it, even the most finely tuned machine will need some help when it comes to safety in poor conditions. Of course good tyres increase grip — their tread helps you track smoothly though the corners. But the tread pattern of your tyres does another job that’s equally important. When encountering surface water, the tread forces it out and away, meaning that those all important points of contact are actually touching the road. When the tread fails in this task (usually due to excess wear) a film of pressurised water can cause your car to slide or ‘aquaplane’ — at which point it is completely our of control. It’s also worth noting that good tyres can actually save you money and petrol. Many manufacturers now make ecologically friendly tyres for just this reason, with some offering
huge fuel reductions — though any new, fresh tyre will outperform an old, bald tyre in this regard. Years ago tyres were very much a ‘one size fits all’ affair, but these days the variation in vehicle styles and their purposes means that tyres are as varied as the cars we drive. It takes an experienced eye to pick the right tyre for a big family sedan, a sporty hatchback and a tough 4x4 all in the same hour, but that’s just what the team at Dargaville’s Gas and Tyre Services are good at. After all, it’s in their name! Stop by to talk about your vehicle, your driving style, and what you need before the weather gets bad or before that warrant is due. With brands like Pirelli, GT, Maxxis and many more they’ll be able to fit the right tyres to your car and keep you safe this winter — all for a very affordable price.

A woman of Northern Wairoa —
by Brian Eastwood
A district nurse in the nineteen twenties had to be a hardy soul. Life was especially not easy for those moving around and working in Northern Wairoa during those years. People of the district thought highly of their Nurse Mabel Vos, who took all the difficulties of travel as part of her job. An added problem for her was poor hearing and she always wore a hearing aid. An early resident of Pouto remembered her visits in 1927. ‘The principal lighthouse keeper kept a medical chest, but otherwise the community depended on the infrequent visits of the District Nurse. Nurse Vos was a great favourite. She came on the boat from Dargaville and stayed two nights whilst dealing with everything from T.B. to cooties. She was kind and jolly and we loved her’. From Pouto the rest of the journey to visit her patients was on horse back. Not all of Mabel’s life was spent in Northern Wairoa. Born in Auckland in 1892 she spent her early days in Thames. A school days’ hobby was gardening. At fourteen Mabel was winning prizes at the Thames flower shows with her poppies and calceolarias collections. While nursing at St Helen’s Hospital in Christchurch, she sat and passed her State Registered Nurse exams. It was 1916 and she was twenty-four. There came more training in 1917. Two years later she was appointed district nurse to the natives

with an area that extended from Tuakau and Miranda in the south to Kaipara in the north. Mabel Vos carried on her education so that in 1921 she was able to pass her State Midwives’ exam. That year a new nursing district was set up in Dargaville. A year was spent in Te Kaha on the East Coast. It was considered too isolated to leave a nurse there any longer although Mabel Vos was probably quite happy. She had a cottage with four large rooms, a bathroom and seven acres for a horse paddock and a garden. Her successor wrote to head office telling how ‘We have never been without vegetables. Nurse Vos left a lovely garden’. Now in her Dargaville appointment, Mabel took leave to attend London’s Kaihu railway station in its heyday. Local Maori waited here British Empire Exhibition of 1924. Always with a horse for Nurse Vos to ride on her visits to the district’s settlements keen to learn, she was given an insight into Guy’s Hospital Baby Clinic, where a One correspondent wrote after touring the district in 1929 New Zealand nurse was sub-matron and was also right up to Waipoua Forest with Nurse Vos, ‘District nurses shown everything of interest at London Hospital. are playing a worthy part in these developing districts, much Home in Kaipara she went back to her work with more than they themselves realise. Often the work, especially Maori people. A regular train trip from Dargaville among the Maori community is strenuous, often disappointing, took her to Kaihu where Maori were waiting with a but among compensations is the heart warming that comes with horse so that she could visit patients in the various a convalescent patient who has been very ill’. settlements. In 1928 Maori showed their appreciation But Nurse Mabel Vos had seemed well able to cope. She had by buying her a Morris Cowley car. Her travel problems survived the influenza epidemic and back blocks life. Mabel Vos were solved. died at Rotorua in 1981 at the good old age of 89 years.
