p Dargaville was busy with cyclists enjoying the scenes of the Northern Wairoa River when the 16th edition of the BDO Tour of Northland Cycle Event saw 320 riders take part in the annual four-day event. “Everyone had a great time in Dargaville. There was plenty of socialising in the main street with people spread across all the cafe’s and eateries,” said organiser, Nathan Cox. “Elite riders, competitive masters, and social or corporate groups all joined in. This year visiting riders included Canadian, Australian and German tourists.” Amongst the group were the only tandem cyclists, Andrew Neville and Chris Heunes of Auckland. “It’s been awesome. We enjoyed the route from Whangarei to Dargaville because it was reasonably flat which suited us,” said Chris. The route started in Whangarei to Dargaville and up to Opononi and Paihia with a ferry crossing to Russell as they headed back to Whangarei along the Old Russell Road.

A recycling promotion pamphlet is set to hit Kaipara letterboxes in early April. Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock is the project manager of the Love Kaipara — Reduce, Reuse Recycle project, which she calls her baby. The recycling pamphlet is part of this project that will encourage residents to reduce waste. In collaboration with the Kaipara District Council and Kaipara Refuse, Victoria has designed an educational flyer showing what can be recycled, with waste-reducing tips on the back. These will be delivered to 9,000 residents in the Kaipara district. The flyers are designed to go on the wall above your home or work recycling station. “It is my passion to educate, inform and change the community’s thinking about the amount of waste p Love Kaipara — Reduce, Reuse Recycle pamphlets project manager Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock we use and the effects landfill have on our environment,” says Victoria. bag to the landfill, but you can fit so Known as Lady V, Victoria visits much in the yellow bags when you wash schools to present a fun programme on and squash”. ways students and their families can “Other councils are also moving to reduce their waste. the pay-as-you-go system. Mr Truter says it is a very different structure for Dargaville and has already helped build the children’s confidence. “They are using not just physical but also mental skills when they climb it. The teachers have been able to present challenges for them such the pupils having to work out how to get places from the different angles. “Ultimately everybody involved in any way helped us accomplish our goal. Trek offers challenge

u by Ayla Miller

u by Ayla Miller

As ideas from community meetings and town revitalisation workshops are beginning to be put into action, the Dargaville Community Development Board are looking for a group of people who are passionate about sharing Dargaville’s history.

In a serendipitous moment, Gill McKinnon received an email from Childfund encouraging her to take part in Trek Vietnam 2016, and it turned out to be just the challenge she had been looking for.

p Taylor Pull and Gill McKinnon of Dargaville will be traveling to Vietnam to help install water filters and educate villagers about how to use them

p Ideas from workshops with town revitalisation expert, Peter Kenyon come to fruition, and Dargaville Community Development Board are looking for people to help make things happen

interest, events or places that provide a good understanding of Dargaville’s history,” says DCDB development coordinator Lorraine Davidson. If you are interested in helping to get this project underway or reviving the Kumara Festival contact Lorraine Davidson on 027 525 8222 leave a message and she will get in touch or email lorrained@dcdb.nz. ¢

Gill will be joined by 16-year-old Taylor Pull of Dargaville and along with a group of other Childfund volunteers, will trek into remote rural villages in Cao Bang, Vietnam, to help install water filters and educate villagers about how to use them. “Childfund have been working in these areas for some time and have bought water to the homes but it is very contaminated. We are now bringing water filters to the homes so they can have clean drinking water,” said Gill. The pair are aiming to raise $3500 each. A single water filter costs $465 and each family needs one water filter per person. Gill has sponsored a young

man in East Timor for 10 years and when the challenge was presented to her she couldn’t get it out of her head. “I thought a lot about it, I was even dreaming about it. I didn’t know if I would be able to do something like this, but it just seemed the right sort of challenge for me.” The pair will be away for 12 days and depart on September 4 this year. They will be holding a trivia night at the Dargaville Town Hall on April 29 from 7pm. Tickets are $20. Two of the most popular suggestions to come from these consultations were the revival of a Kumara Festival and the establishment of historical interpretation boards around the town. These boards will present information about historical buildings and locations that played an important role in the making of Dargaville. Board member, Peter Boyd, says the boards will work to foster visitors’ interest about the town’s history. “We have so much history in Dargaville and a lot of people won’t realise that, so we need a way to show that off. We already have the likes of the Dargaville Museum which does a fantastic job but this trail will target visitors that won’t necessarily go to the museum, and spark their interest in our history. “It would be great to have some people on the committee who have a good understanding of the town’s history and can help to collate the information,” he says. The DCDB will work as a support structure for the committee and assist them with things such as applying for funding. “The board would really appreciate suggestions regarding any points of

Rail venture boots for tourism u by Ann Morgan

The Dargaville Rail Carts directors, John Hansen and Dave Selby, have been busy the past few months with travellers nationally and internationally participating in their new venture, utilising the rail line from Dargaville to Tangowahine. “We have had more than 500 customers so far with another 110 prebooked visitors in the next few weeks,” said John. “The majority of clients have been from around the country including Wellington, the Bay of Islands and Rotorua, and there has been international visitors from places like Germany, Canada and England enjoying the ride.” John says the feedback has been very positive and the visitors are enjoying getting out to the areas they can’t access by car. “There is a guide on each trip and we stop at set points which have a historical significance and this adds to the experience. They love learning the historic side of things.” The men are looking at the possibility of extending the service to Waiotira as the demand is definitely there for an alternative package. “Dargaville is on the tourism route and is capturing a lot of tourists which is proving to be very positive for the town. Since Christmas we have received many sea birds which have come ashore to rest and re-waterproof their feathers after damaging them while swimming to shore. The baby morepork we received at Christmas has now been released to his home turf. He flew around outside for a while then flew into the house near where he was found! This is not uncommon and after a few days of getting used of his new location, the call of the wild will get the better of him and he will be gone. We have also released three harrier hawks. As two of them came from close to the Centre we were able to set them free while we had visitors. To see them head for the Western Hills was great to watch. At our home we usually feed around 50 silver eyes, lots of blackbirds, thrush, plus three native pigeons. In February each year many disappear for a time but they will soon start returning for their free feed! They remain close in the bush on our place, so it must be something to do with the food chain or because they are tending to young ones. If anyone has a cheap or free laptop, we could utilise it at the Centre because we could show some of the interesting birds we get around Christmas time to school children. Being able to play bird calls to them would also be great. When our vet Bruce is working on a bird in the surgery, we could record this and play it at a later time. Some of the birds will feed when no one is around so we could also record this to show how big birds like the giant petrel and albatross prepare their food before eating it. I would like to thank John for making a new gate for our Recovery Centre building - it’s so flash visitors take photos of it. When visiting the Centre you will now see a sign saying ‘Visitors welcome’ because some people are not sure if they can come and have a look around. Everyone is welcome. The Centre is not just a place for injured birds but can be very educational. The new cell phones are great for sending us photos of birds when you want to identify them. Or you can just email the photo to info@nbr.org.nz and I will be able to tell you what it is and a bit about it - well I should be able to! Last year I received a photo of a bird from a young girl that had shifted to Australia after visiting the Centre. She decided I should be able to help her out and I still have no idea what it was!

“The Wilson Cup is an excellent tournament, we had a full field of 32 teams playing,” said club president Margaret Smitton. Corrinne Pritchard grew up in Dargaville and is the granddaughter of Mr JG Wilson who donated the trophy in 1955 and sponsored the event. She now comes from Auckland every year to play. “I ran into Pat Young from the Dargaville club at a tournament about 14 years ago and she suggested I come and represent the family for our annual tournament. I have been for the past 14 years now and we continue sponsoring the event.” The two families go back in history together when Pat’s parents and grandparents played bowls and she remembers dancing with Mr Wilson when she was 12 years old at the Scottish society and he also danced with her at her wedding. Pat is 83-years-old and is a life member. Her service to Northland and Dargaville bowling clubs has seen her

Helping with advice u by Ann Morgan

Although more and more services are provided online, the Citizens Advice Bureau remains committed to providing a person-to-person service. They believe being able to talk to a real person is a rarity in the present day and this is a key part of what makes their service unique. Mosaics celebrate maternity unit arrivals u by Ann Morgan

Matakohe artist Pat George was invited to create two mosaic murals for the new maternity unit at Whangarei Hospital which are now proudly displayed on the walls inside the entrance. “The new maternity wing is named Te Kotuku — the White Heron. In Maori culture this means prestige, purity and uniqueness, in reference to the importance of a new life in a family,” said Northland District Health Board hospital advisory committee member Libby Jones. “The two fabulous mosaic murals Pat made with help from her husband Steve and other family members represent different areas of Northland. They have worked hard in their Matakohe studio for many months to complete the work of art and are justifiably proud of the end result. “It will be really nice for Kaipara residents who go to the maternity unit and see her work on display. “As a Kaipara community resident I am really proud that Pat was asked to create her pieces of art and they are wonderful pieces of work. They will stand in their place for the lifetime of the building as they are permanent fixtures. “I am pleased to see the unit opening after many years of planning. The building is mother and baby

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE Preparing for law changes u by Ann Morgan

Sponsored by Nauman Insurance Brokers, the Dargaville Business Forum held a Health and Safety presentation explaining the upcoming changes in legislation next month. Presented by David Grindle of WRMK Lawyers and Northland Chamber of Commerce CEO, Tony Collins, the meeting was predominantly aimed at owner/directors to get local businesses prepared for their responsibilities for worker safety. “The new Health and Safety at Work Act, coming into effect in April is bringing a higher duty of care, increased personal responsibility and higher legal exposure. The aim is to change our relaxed culture around workplace safety, reducing the incidents of death and serious personal harm. Employer responsibility has increased,” said Chartered Insurance Broker, Eileen Nauman. “Key points were businesses, farms, property owners, and some volunteer organisations must have a health and safety system in place and these need to address risk identification and

the isolation of risks. Employee induction and training are critical areas and these systems need to be monitored over time and reviewed regularly. The new laws will mean that owners/directors will ultimately be responsible for workplace disasters and accidents. Worksafe want everyone to return home from work every day. Workers are somebody’s father, aunt, brother, sister, or friend. “It is important business owners and directors are aware of what is happening,” said Dargaville Business Forum chairperson, Peter Boyd. “It is really important to get an understanding the new laws. LOCAL KNOWLEDGE Looking beneath the surface u by Andy Bryenton

The best thing about moving to a new town is finding out all the little quirks and interesting stories which make a place unique. But, by the same token, finding out exactly where to go and who to talk to for certain services can be frustrating sometimes. Certainly, even the most provincial town has places where you can have a key cut, a shoe mended, a lawn mower tuned up or a record player repaired. But where? Sometimes it’s a case of ‘everyone knows’ where to turn to for little jobs and skills. But increasingly — and especially seeing as our region, the Kaipara, is experiencing an influx of new residents from the big centres — it’s a case of ‘please tell us!’ At the same time, there are many businesses here who have creatively diversified, into interesting and sometimes seemingly contradictory roles. It’s actually kind of characterful and interesting that we have stores boasting hardware, power tools and key cutting grown out of a thriving engineering workshop — or a single

Other combinations may be confusing to recent arrivals who are used to the cosmopolitan way — each shop does only one thing, and their niches are guarded jealously. Here, you’ll find places which offer antiques and hot coffee, or watch repair, musical instruments and spectacles. The upshot of all this is that Dargaville, for example, has so much more to offer than one may expect upon scratching the surface. It’s also certainly true that our progressive retailers pride

Giving back and winning big u by Andy Bryenton

“For the Paparoa A&P Show we donated to the Dargaville Fire Brigade, for the Waimate A&P Show we donated to the Kerikeri St John, and then for the Kaitaia A&P Show we donated to the Kaitaia St John. These teams are selfless the way they spend their own time helping the community.” Success at the Northland Field Days has been mirrored by success in the corporate arena as well as for Gas and Tyre. Already having expanded to four locations throughout the North, this year sees a brand new site breaking ground in the heart of Whangarei. A strong presence on the field at rural shows has made it all the easier to get down to the grass roots of rural industry, talking to new customers and spreading the word. As for supporting those folks in our community who give their all to keep us safe and to save lives? Helping them is just the right thing to do — a fact which stands above any trophy or award for the Gas and Tyre team. ¢

S

Gas and Tyre took out the coveted award for the second year running, but it was NEST — the Northland emergency helicopter heroes — who benefitted from a generous donation, raised by the sale of ‘4x4 burgers’ on site. Gas and Tyre representative, Josh Boakes, gives credit to both his company’s suppliers and those who helped make their vision a reality — thus benefitting the rescue charity. “A huge thank you to Greg and his team from Newscapes — they managed the supply and install of the landscaping side of the entire site. The helicopter was an obvious choice seeing as it is Northland wide. The Field Days cover the whole of the North and of course so do we!” It’s not just the NEST helicopter trust which has received a much needed boost from Gas and Tyre’s presence at this summer’s rural shows. A trip through the A&P calendar reveals many other kind instances of support for local charities.

Time for change at the top? Suggestions that Fonterra boss Theo Speirings suffered some abuse at the Northland Field Days have been unproven, but would not be surprising. One can understand the anger of many farmers who are questioning Mr Spierings’ judgement and his ongoing statements that Fonterra has got the fundamentals right in spite of low prices. He said the co-op would maintain its $4.60 per kg forecast pay-out for

the coming season. On January 28 it lowered its forecast for the 20152016 season from $4.60 per kilo milk solids to $4.15. On March 9 Fonterra announced the current season forecast had been reduced to $3.90 per kilo of milk solids. It is my opinion it is time to question Spierings’ judgement. After watching and listening to his message to farmers over the last 20 months it is my view that he over promises and under delivers and sends very mixed messages to milk suppliers. Spierings can’t use the excuse that he was overtaken by the speed of world events regarding milk supply. Fonterra has 6,000 employees throughout the world. There would be no excuse for them not to comprehend the dramatic effects of the United States’ trade ban against Russia. Even the Governor of the Reserve Bank acknowledged this when he lowered interest rates this last week.

Some 85% of Fonterra milk suppliers’ farming businesses are now at extreme risk. Despite Fonterra’s chief financial officer saying that Fonterra was financially sound Fonterra is reported in the press that it is introducing a 90-day delayed payment system for its trade suppliers. This will ruin many rural businesses. Theo Spierings’ predecessor, Canadian Andrew Ferrier, reportedly received an $8.2 million golden handshake when he left in 2011. It is my view that Spierings has lost the confidence and trustworthiness that he had with many milk suppliers. It is time for the board to consider a change in company leadership. It could prove to be very worthwhile to offer another $8.2 million golden handshake. Fonterra needs to start winning again and senior management need a twoword sign on every desk to summarise the fact that — I’M RESPONSIBLE. ¢
