Silos rise over Te Kopuru u by Andy Bryenton

As part of an investment in infrastructure spanning the north and priced at more than $50 million, Ballance has established a new automated silo system in Te Kopuru to expedite more efficient local farming.

Officials and representatives from the fertiliser and agricultural company gathered for the official ribbon-cutting last Thursday, declaring the 120-tonne, three-storey structure fully operational and ready to deliver two kinds of fertiliser to local farmers across the Pouto and coastal region. Those present agreed that it was a vote of confidence for local farming and a necessary new piece of infrastructure to ensure better productivity across west Kaipara pastures. Truck and tractor trips to Dargaville will also be slashed, and

smaller, more precise deployments of nitrogen-based fertiliser are better for environmental outcomes. Ballance’s regional sales manager Calvin Ball was pleased to see the threeweek build come to fruition under the guidance of Ballance’s engineers. “We’re very busy in this region, and it was time to make a significant new investment in technology,” he said. Farmers and locals, including silo facility neighbours the Rope family and pilots from Super Air, braved autumn showers to view the new installation.

Engineer Craig Fitzpatrick explained the operation of the innovative silo unit, which automatically cycles its contents via an electric conveyor and auger system to prevent blockages. Farmers watched as he showed them how ground spreading operators could use the large machine like a self-serve petrol pump via a swipe card and touch screen. Ballance can monitor the content and flow of the silos remotely via the internet, and farmers and fertiliser companies can place an order to pick up at the new location, live online. ¢

Council fronts LTP questions

3

u by Andy Bryenton

A large group of south-west Kaipara residents gathered in Te Kopuru last Thursday to voice their questions and concerns about the Kaipara District Council’s Long Term Plan. The meeting, at the Southern Rugby clubrooms, was well attended by locals. They came with a variety of queries and issues for their elected representatives, ranging from the costs of proposed civic works to remediate Dargaville’s leaky, mould-stricken town hall annexe through to serious concerns about the homogenisation of wastewater charges. “We’re looking for transparency and the real facts to make an informed decision,” said local business owner Todd Mullinder, echoing the sentiment of many attendees. Another older citizen, who asked not to be named, put it more bluntly. “What extra services will we receive for our rates, considering we’re getting a rate increase of more than 10 per cent, and some areas get a reduction?” Mayor Jason Smith was there to address these and other questions, as he and councillors David Wills, Anna Curnow and Eryn Wilson-Collins sat down to have round-table discussions with Te Kopuru locals personally and explain the position of the LTP. Mayor Smith was also joined by his general manager for community engagement and a manager for infrastructure planning, who helped fill in the details and figures to address people’s concerns.

p David Wills explains the finer points of the proposed KDC Long Term Plan to Te Kopuru residents at what proved an animated but amicable meeting between locals and their representatives

“We are aware that the key subject for the people of Te Kopuru is the equalisation of wastewater charges,” he said in his opening address. Indeed, many of the residents spoken to about their submissions to the LTP process were in favour of ‘ring fencing’ the established, under-capacity Te Kopuru wastewater scheme, or

examining the particulars of its ongoing cost and the accuracy of reporting of its budget and operations, back into the era of the commissioners and the Tiller administration. However, other submissions were varied, with Chris Fife presenting a case for further investment in multisport facilities and others touching on

Variety show is all go

Stopping litter at its source

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville Little Theatre’s forthcoming variety show will comprise a showcase of talent from across the west Kaipara, including dance, song and live music this May.

p Anna, Becky and Deborah have curated a cast of varied performances for Dargaville’s forthcoming variety show

Rehearsals in front of the trio of production managers brought in a host of creative talent to try out for the show last Sunday. Some of the performances were already looking quite polished, well before the curtain is set to rise on the evening of May 8. The show hearkens back to the tradition of the music hall and vaudeville, with many separate performances rolled into one onstage experience. Audiences can look forward to original live music, choreographed compositions from the students of King’s School of Dance, and many other surprises. The production crew of Anna Harding, Deborah Steele and Becky Rumsey were impressed by the quality of the material they saw before rehearsals have even begun. They want to keep some of the show’s

content secret to increase the surprise value for ticket buyers. “Dargaville and this whole area have talent; that’s the message we’ve received with our auditions. There are people involved with this variety performance who would not necessarily have put themselves forward to act in a traditional musical or play with our Little Theatre, and that’s positive as well. We want to encourage confidence and visibility across all the performing arts,” says Becky. There is still time to sign up if you have a Kiwi-themed original or cover song to play, jokes to tell or even magic to perform. Last-minute entrants should hurry to call 022 492 7099 as soon as possible to get amongst the fun and excitement before tickets go on sale in late April. ¢

A new initiative to bust pollution has been installed in selected storm drains across the Kaipara as part of a joint push to identify and eliminate the ‘hot spots’ of plastic contamination. NorthTec, Northland Regional Council, Whitebait ConnectionMountains to Sea Conservation Trust, Far North District Council, Whangarei District Council, and Kaipara District Council have joined forces to deploy the LittaTrap devices across the north, giving the first regional snapshot of litter and plastic waste, which would otherwise be deposited in the harbours and waterways. “The idea is to put traps in various places, and also around different human activities,” says Dr Manue Martinez of Northtec. “For example, schools, here at Northtec around the campus, in residential and retail areas, car parks and the like.” Rhew traps take the form of a sturdy mesh met fitted to a collar inside the mouth of the storm drain. Water can pass through, but litter is trapped. Plastic is traditionally a big polluter via the route of storm drains. One previous LittaTrap survey

conducted by a major supermarket chain discovered that out of 1,300 litter items trapped, roughly 800 were disposable plastics. The KDC has emplaced LittaTraps around the district at strategic points and is now conducting an audit on what has found its way into the trap nets. This, as Dr Maretinez indicates, will allow stakeholders in the scheme to determine ‘hot spots’ of littering and target disposables that are more than proportionately responsible for plastic flow-through into the marine environment. Some overseas municipalities have installed LittaTraps permanently in high-risk areas and have custodial staff to empty them weekly. Others have used the information gleaned from checking the traps to strategically ban specific plastics or install more rubbish and recycling bins where they are needed most.

Flavours of the ‘world’s crossroads’ u by Andy Bryenton

A new Turkish cuisine restaurant has opened in Dargaville, bringing the flavours of the Mediterranean and Middle East to town. The owner of Murat’s at the Dargaville Club comes to this new enterprise with 28 years of hospitality experience both here and overseas at his disposal. He has a recipe book that combines local ingredients with some old-fashioned Turkish cooking traditions. “The logo I chose for the restaurant is the olive branch because my father and grandfather were both the custodians of an ancestral olive grove,” says Murat. He hails from the western part of Turkey, near the ‘crossroads of the world’ where the silk road entered Greece and Europe. “Many of my recipes come from my grandmother, who was an excellent cook. They are the kinds of food I grew up with.” Like his grandmother, this chef makes everything by hand, right down to fresh hummus, tzatziki and flaky, sweet baklava desserts. While many Kiwis will be familiar with two of his lunchtime favourites, pita pockets and wrapped kebabs, the menu at Murat’s covers everything from lamb shanks to skewered shish kebabs, salads and spanakopita, a spinach and feta-filled pastry from the Aegean islands.

p Murat’s at the Dargaville Club brings the flavours of Turkey to Dargaville

Support against cancer Dargaville Cancer Support Group meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Dargaville Hospital’s community health building. Their mission is to assist those living with cancer, their support people and their families. “We’re very grateful for the companionship and suppor t, which the group has provided, and thankful to Daffodil House in Whangarei for sending one of their experienced nurses to attend the group each month,” says organiser Ken Cashin. “On March 23, we also

have a guest speaker; legal expert and practising Dargaville lawyer Alexandra McClaren.” While describing the group’s ethos in prose would ‘take many pages’ according to Ken, one member, Annette, summed up their philosophy in this piece of poetry.

It’s been suggested I write about our wonderful group Which meets once a month at a time to suit On cancer support meetings that I wish to dwell Because it’s important, and I’ve much to tell. The group has been functioning for many years Not complaining or whining, just allaying our fears Supporting each other in a spirit of sharing Understanding — love — and genuine caring. Cancer is no respecter of person – it attacks quietly On the young, or the old — it works defiantly Something we must accept — should it happen to us Be thankful for doctors, in whom we place our trust. Thanks to our nurse from Daffodil House she drives Informing us on developments and how to survive Lots of interesting speakers on health issues, pacemakers Support aids from Northable – and even ‘undertakers’! Date Scones and Pikelets we enjoy for morning tea So come and join us — it’s absolutely free! We’re a happy family — keeping positive is our intent With a joke shared each meeting — keeps us all content.

Celebrating the seashore

River fest sails in

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Baylys Beach hosted its annual Seaweek celebration and local beachside carnival in mid-March, showcasing both the beauty and the danger of the region’s wild west coast.

Dargaville’s inaugural River Festival is confirmed for April 17 this year, with action both on and off the water to entertain and educate patrons about the history of the Northern Wairoa.

p Dargaville Primary School students display their winning entries to the Baylys Beach Seaweek colouring art contest; these and all entries will be on display at the town’s community centre during March

Not only were there games and activities on the shore, as early morning rain cleared to let through the sunshine; there was also a chance to experience some history close up, as the town’s new community centre was transformed for a day into a mini museum. Volunteers from the Dargaville Museum displayed some of their extensive collection of maritime relics, gleaned from beneath the sands of Baylys Beach and other parts of the Ripiro coast, down to the lighthouse at Pouto. This area was a dangerous one for shipping in the days of sail, and there are 119 known wrecks under the shifting sands.

Pieces included a small cannon known as a swivel gun, which would have been mounted on a sailing ship for defence, and loaded with anything from stones to broken crockery and nails. There were also pieces of ship’s rigging, copper plating used to deter barnacles and worms from boring into timbers, and an ancient, carved wooden washbasin. Down on the beach sandcastles were excavated, sausages sizzled, and traditional beach games played, alongside the chance for children to saddle up and enjoy a horse ride right on the beach. ¢

The festival will be centred around the Northern Wairoa Boating Club, where a series of successful summertime evening markets have shaped information on how best to host events by the riverside. Walking weekend beckons

u by Andy Bryenton

Mangawhai’s Walking Weekend is on again in time for Easter, with numerous forays among the region’s unique coastal forests and hills on offer across both March 27 and 28. Local track building team organiser and long-term proponent of the east coast outdoors, Dr Gordon Hosking, has received both the New Zealand Order of Merit and the Outdoor Access Champion Award for helping open up the bushlands around Mangawhai to walkers. When we interviewed him about his achievements in December of 2020, he was the first to insist that he was simply part of a wider team. “Our role is to get out there and make it accessible,” he said. “We want people to be able to experience these sights up close and first-hand.” The Walking Weekend is a chance to do just that, with eight walks planned for Saturday and five for Sunday. It includes tracks listed among New Zealand’s best and acclaimed by the Department of Conservation, photographer s, inter national magazines and locals alike. Highlights include a guided tour of Bream Tail Farm, where walkers can observe the conservation efforts balancing agriculture with ecology on this seaside property, as well as a trip around the estuary wetlands. There’s a trek through the history of the Mangawhai ‘big dig’ led by members of the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration

Society, a coastal hike to the Goat Island marine reserve, and a more challenging traverse of the Tanekaha track complex in the Brynderwyns. Sunday brings the chance to walk a scenic part of the nationally significant Te Araroa Trail atop Mangawhai’s cliffs, delve into geology and learn about the shaping of the landscape with guest guide Dr Gary Carr, or adventure along the Te Arai coast, home of New Zealand’s rarest seabirds. There’s also a history tour walk that takes a close look at the stories of old Mangawhai, hosted by Jo Roberts. ¢

Latest news & updates from around our Network

Upgrading the high voltage lines to Mangawhai With the population of Mangawhai growing from a small seaside village to a small town in recent years, we are focussed on ensuring that the area retains a reliable supply of electricity, especially as it is reliant on a sole 33kV sub-transmission line to power the area. Last year our crews spent a lot of time removing vegetation threats to this critical line, which runs from Maungaturoto to Mangawhai. During February we successfully completed significant equipment upgrades, which included installing new cross arms, poles and guy wires at multiple locations along the 27 km stretch of line – a significant investment of over $350k. Months of careful planning went into the work with the need to complete this critical maintenance

before winter. Over 30 of our staff were involved so that it could all be completed within three days. Due to the nature of some of the work, we had to shut the power down in certain areas for periods of time over the three days in and around Kaiwaka and Mangawhai. However, to minimise disruption to our customers we used generators to keep the power on where possible. A generator farm of 4 large 1250 KvA generators was established, producing 4MW of power, to keep the power on to the Mangawhai village area and a lot of customers. We would like to thank the landowners who allowed us to set the generator farm up for the duration of the work and consumers for their support in helping us to get this work done well in advance of the winter.

More electricity supply for Maunu and CBD Our new Maunu substation is on track to be fully commissioned by early April. The $6.6 million investment – our first new substation since 2007 - will support growth in the area (up to 5000 homes and businesses) and provides an alternate supply to Whangarei Hospital and CBD. The reliability and quality of electricity supply for the fast

growing Maunu substation suburb is now significantly improved thanks to the new substation. Maunu substation will cater for the increasing residential growth in and around the wider Maunu area for many years to come. We want to thank local residents for their patience throughout the build.

Northlanders donate $334k to Rescue Chopper Northlanders have once again pulled together in support of our local air ambulance service by donating a massive $334k to the 2020 Northland Rescue Chopper fundraising appeal.

“For the year we had, I am amazed at how generous and supportive people continued to be. We are very grateful, particularly as 2020 was our busiest year on record with 1115 flights – significantly more than in 2019.”

That’s $88,000 more than the 2019 total, a figure NEST General Manager Vanessa Furze says is amazing.

Northpower and Top Energy have proudly sponsored the service since its first flight in 1988.

Pouto Road sealing begins u by Andy Bryenton

The sealing of Pouto Road is set to begin from March 24, heralding the beginning of one of the most ambitious tar-sealing projects in the region’s recent history.

p Dignitaries and iwi representatives attended the blessing for the Pouto Road worksite last week, preparing for the machinery to roll in

Mayor’s Memo

Earlier this month, local iwi blessed workers and the site where the sealing will start. The blessing was attended by Te Uri o Hau representatives, KDC project staff and contractors. Sealing Pouto Road is part of the Kaipara KickStart programme, led by the council and supported with funds from the Provincial Development Unit. The sealing initiative will be undertaken by contractors Ventia. It will span two seasons, bracketing the worst of our local winter weather to avoid working in inclement conditions. Pending weather and Covid restrictions, the first 10 kilometres of new roadway are expected to be completed by December of this year. “As part of the cultural monitoring for the work, the project team is working

with local iwi and hapu to ensure there are kaitiaki (guardians) regularly on-site to monitor work during construction. Pouto Peninsula is home to three marae, Ripia, Oturei and Waikaretu, and a number of culturally significant areas,” said Kaipara District Council spokesperson Ruby Mitchell. Kaipara District Council general manager for Infrastructure Services, Jim Sephton, is pleased to be commencing the construction for the road. “This is a hugely important sealing project for our community, with a lot of work behind the scenes to get to this point. I am looking forward to seeing this first section of seal completed and the benefits it will bring to Pouto Road residents as well as the wider community.” ¢

Kia ora A surprise season of tsunami sirens is upon us. A real evacuation-level alert, a false alarm and then a scheduled test all within one month – that’s a bit to get your head around! On 5 March there was a legitimate tsunami evacuation for communities of Mangawhai and Ruawai. Thanks to the thousands who responded and followed Northland Civil Defence instructions. On 15 March there was also a Kaipara and Whangarei false tsunami alarm for 3 minutes, due to a technical error, for which Northpower has apologised. Coming up on Easter Sunday 4 April there will be a scheduled tsunami siren test. In response to public feedback the test sirens will sound for two minutes at 12 noon ONLY. There will NOT be the usual second test ten minutes after the first. It seems the tsunami sirens have never sounded as frequently across the Kaipara and people need to be mindful at this time. Know the siren sound and what you may need to do. With its peak consultation of the Council term right now, through March Kaipara District Council is consulting about the Long Term Plan 2021–31. Specifically there are seven key projects for which we’re seeking your input. We’ve started with a 3.37% average rates increase, one of the lowest in the country, but the seven key projects could change that figure. Now’s the chance to have your say. Getting on with the job of making Kaipara better, here’s a quick list of some awesome progress being made at the Council: • Kaipara Kickstart’s Unsealed Road Network $8m works have begun, with 14.4km of roads rehabilitated already to date since the start of the autumn season. Ripping, rolling, reforming of some roads is ahead, though not stretching to every inch of Kaipara’s 1,200km of unsealed roads. Business-asusual investments plus the PGF investment over the next 18 months will improve our gravel road network, and that journey is just beginning now.

• New seal road works start for Pouto Road Phase 1 this week – the biggest sealing project in Northland in many years. • Resource consents and building consents are up, and this financial year Council staff have processed 99% of non-notified applications within the 20 working day timeframe which is well up from 71% and 81% of the last two years. The last four months we have been on 100% - as it should be, but something worth shouting about considering recent years. • Currently the team are processing 97 applications which is up from a consistent mid 70s figure last year. This is a sign development is flourishing in Kaipara irrespective of Covid-19 and the associated recession. 70 of these current applications are within Mangawhai with the remaining applications spread evenly around the district. • The proposed route map for the Kaihu Valley Trail will be released soon, part of which will be on the railway line where the last train ran on 29 March 1959. 62 years from steam trains to e-bikes, roads getting fixed, record growth of a popular place Kaipara’s on its way! Progress from the Council on many fronts is pointing us towards a better Kaipara. All aboard! Nga mihi

Easter Break

The strange case of chocolate eggs u by Andy Bryenton

Easter, in European culture, represents one of the most important religious holidays of the Christian church, though for many secular families, it’s all about the strange story of a magic rabbit and his gifts of chocolate eggs.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

The massive importance of the resurrection to people of the Christian faith is undeniable, but how in the world did the holiday of Easter get its name and its associated non-religious mythology? The name Easter comes from the goddess of the spring, Eostre, who was worshipped by several northern European tribes in the time of ancient Rome. She was said to be the one who brought back life and warmth after the winter. Many different cultures had a celebration of spring. The Romans were already using their ‘barbarian’ neighbour’s’ Eostre-month as an excuse for a party, before the time of Jesus and his apostles. It helped that the celebrations were quite ‘adult themed’, with dancing, wine and even songs with raunchy lyrics; imagine a rock festival crossed with Valentine’s Day. The early Catholic church in Rome layered its own festival of rebirth out of death during Eostre-month, but certain

p Why does a rabbit leave chocolate eggs for children on the date of one of the biggest religious festivals of Christianity? The answer comes from a tangled and coincidental history

aspects remained in folklore. One was the symbolism of the rabbit, a creature famous for its fertility and enthusiasm. As Easter became a less rowdy affair, people also began decorating eggs to take to the large, important church services that marked the occasion. Tellingly, days still dictated by the moon as in Eostre’s time. Decorating eggs for spring rebirth goes back to ancient Egypt and Sumeria, where people would bury painted, empty ostrich eggs to appeal to their animalheaded gods for a good harvest. Other factors came into play; the use of a white egg for part of the Jewish Passover feast and the fact that medieval Christians

gave up eggs for Lent but could eat them again at Easter. People began to decorate eggs as a symbol of new life, an allegory for resurrection. Chocolate was the last part of the riddle to fall into place. It wasn’t until Europeans reached South America that they discovered cocoa, which was, ironically, used as part of seasonal rituals by the Olmec people, though as a drink. Chocolate eggs replaced real ones in the 1800s, when the Dutch and Germans invented the children’s story of Osterhase, the magical rabbit who hides treats for good children, drawing on the rabbit and egg symbolism that had persisted in folklore for centuries. ¢

Easter Break

deep cold south. This got him thinking about how time, measured by clocks, is really just a human invention, and the tilt and spin of the earth are what really determines the length of the day. In 1895 he presented a paper that suggested a two-hour time shift, to commence in summer and end on his birthday, April 20. The government didn’t want to be the first in the world to change the clock and calendar for the sake of one man’s insect collecting. It wasn’t until the first world war that the German and Austrian states switched to daylight saving time in summer, effectively ‘stealing a march’ on their enemies by rising earlier and taking advantage of a longer day. Of course, the allies soon followed. In 1927 New Zealand switched to daylight saving time as we know it, and George Vernon Hudson received the honours he was due. This year there will be a test of the Tsunami siren system for the end of daylight saving time, a system his fellow scientists could only have dreamed about. ¢

SHARKY’S Ba

It’s widely unknown that the long afternoons and light evenings of summer are, in fact, a Kiwi invention. They all came about because of one man’s obsession with insects, the timing of his birthday, and a trip to the Antarctic. George Vernon Hudson came to New Zealand as a young man and settled in Nelson, later moving to Wellington to work in the post office. His childhood fascination with bugs and beetles exploded into full-fledged obsession. He was a familiar figure in early 1900s Wellington, with his jars, nets and books. He amassed the biggest collection of Kiwi insects ever, and it’s still part of the collection at Te Papa, where they are trying to crack his home-made codes to this day. Being a bug collector, the long evenings of summer were prime time for George. He could finish work at the post office and head out to catch new specimens during these longer days. When he was invited to join an expedition to the Antarctic, collecting new insects on the way, he was delighted to discover that the days were even longer in the

Racing leads to new technology u by Andy Bryenton

There are some who will celebrate the victory of New Zealand in the recent America’s Cup yacht racing series, but still opine that it’s a pointless exercise, a sport based entirely on money. Looking at the designer couture circus, which has surrounded the racing, it’s easy to see where this cynicism comes from. The same attitude could be taken about MotoGP or Formula One motor racing, both events where the engineers contribute as much as the athletes to outright victory. Some even say that such contests are pointless. However, they’re overlooking some important facts. The strict rules of events like the America’s Cup, the F1 world series or even the Baja Rally force people

to get intelligent. They bring out the cunning and creativity in us. Then, those advancements made to loophole or exploit rigid guidelines, get used elsewhere for the betterment of everyone. Consider the boats we’ve just seen literally flying across Auckland’s harbour. A few years back, there was nobody to complain that these designs were more about ‘piloting than sailing’ while they sipped their gin and tonics. It was the very strict set of rules concocted by the America’s Cup bigwigs that got the minds of our yacht builders spinning. They’re some of the world’s greatest for a reason, and they came up with the hydraulically powered foils, which allowed Team NZ to scud along to victory at 40km/h, all powered by a puff of breeze. They don’t change the sails anymore, either. The athletes operating those hand-grinders are charging up the hydraulics. In a few short years, the quest for a large piece of silver cutlery has transformed the concept of sailing beyond what several naval wars ever did in the age of Admiral Nelson.

p Formula One, Moto GP, X Games, the America’s Cup — all the top racing events deliver technological leaps forward as well as thrills for the viewers and fans

It’s the same in Formula One. This sport gave us the concept of aerodynamics for the automobile, including Lotus’ famous experiments with downforce and extra front wheels and Brabham’s rolling extractor fan, the BT46B. Materials tech from the America’s Cup is going straight into space rockets, just as Formula One technology goes right into supercars and finally filters through to your family hatchback. kinetic recovery system pioneered for racing, for example. So yes, the big racing events on and off the water are garnished with the names of French handbag makers, the best gold watches in Switzerland and suits from the catwalks of Milan. Pots of money are poured in to help make the teams go faster. The irony is, it’s the limits that free the minds of those engineers behind the scenes. Eventually, everyone benefits from the spectacle, win, lose or draw. ¢

Hotrods and Harleys and more u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s fifth annual Hotrods and Harleys show is coming soon, with the call out to owners of classic bikes and cars to polish them up and get their engines rumbling for the big day on April 10. In 2017 local business owner Greg Smith wanted to celebrate his new premises by sharing the space with Dargaville petrolheads, and fans of classic horsepower. The small gathering proved supremely successful, and a yearly tradition was born that has come to fruition for 2021 as a day of family fun. Despite the title, all manner of classic and custom machines are welcome on the day, from the British cafe racers of the 60s through to classic American cruisers and muscle cars. It’s a gathering of those who share a passion for engineering power and automotive styling, airbrushed paint and sparkling chrome. There’ll be a section for the biggest and baddest on ‘supercharger alley’. In previous years, the show has featured everything from original Minis to classic Corvettes. The action starts at 11am, at Greg’s engineering workshop and yard in Edward Street, Dargaville. The Kurbsiders Hot Rod Club from Kerikeri will cruise in with their convoy of classics and customs, meeting up with their counterparts from the Dargaville Rod and Custom Club and a crowd of other locals with their unique and historic machines. A good example

p Calling all classic bikes, custom cars, classics and hot rods; Dargaville is about to host an unmissable event for all petrolheads and fans of custom culture on wheels

is the poster car for this year’s show; Vance Jones’ neatly restored black Zodiac, a car that evokes some true Kiwi petrolhead nostalgia. The show will also feature plenty for the children, including competitions with

prizes that are free to enter. Children and grown-ups alike can meet and greet Dargaville racing legend and drift world champion Gaz Whiter, who will be onsite with his world-beating drift car to sign autographs. He’ll even give one

lucky winner a ride to remember as a passenger. You can also vote in the ‘people’s choice’ for the best machine on display and purchase hot barbecue and cold drinks courtesy of the rod and custom club’s hospitality. ¢

HOT RODS & HARLEYS 2021

Colour in this car, add your own custom touches. Bring your artwork to the Show & Shine at Greg Smith Engineering, Day Street Dargaville. 11am-2pm Saturday 10th April. Prizes for age 0-5year, 5-10years and 10+
