NEST ambassador and Ruawai businessman Anthony Blundell is spearheading a new rescue helicopter pad in the town which is expected to be operational late next month. The helipad, alongside the Ruawai College gymnasium will prove an allseason 24/7 operational facility which
will also provide emergency services to the surrounding area. “Whilst NEST usually finds a safe landing site near all the incidents it attends, what they are also looking for are permanent regional landing sites, available 24 hours and 365 days a year, to be put in place. Ruawai has been
highlighted as one of those regions,” Mr Blundell said. “The preferred site identified was a grassed area adjacent to the Ruawai College gymnasium which provides operationally safe conditions and access for all emergency personnel and resources.” continued on page 4 …

World renowned accordionist Kevin Friedrich is back in the Kaipara and will perform alongside friends at his annual variety concert on April 12.
Join Kevin Friedrich and friends for an afternoon of music at the Lighthouse Function Centre on Sunday, April 12
This year’s concert will feature a special military tribute to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli and mark 70 years since the end of WWII. “Its shaping up to be a wonderful afternoon and all the work for the military tribute is well underway,” says Kevin. The Afternoon of Music with Kevin Friedrich and Friends will feature a multimedia presentation, by Ken Cashin, paying tribute to local people who have served in active duty for New Zealand, and internationally acclaimed composer Gary Daverne is arranging music, which Kevin will perform. “The music by Gary Daverne is turning out to be quite interesting and is in three movements: The Journey, Gallipoli and This is Our Home. I’ll also be playing a piece I’ve unearthed called Whangarei March by Albert Dobson — its really beautiful, and I can’t find any records of it ever having been played.” As always, the afternoon of music will feature an eclectic and memorable variety of talent, including singers, instrumentalists and an accordion orchestra from Auckland. A shared afternoon tea is included and the concert will conclude with a traditional jam session and sing-a-long.
Concert organisers would like to thank everyone who has provided photos and information for the military tribute. The concert takes place at the Lighthouse Function Centre and starts at 1pm. For more information phone Dargaville Museum 09 439 7555.

Tough trials for rugby league success by Ann Morgan
Dargaville High School students Thomas Anderson and Kane Pomare have made the NorthTec Adam Blair rugby league squad to play against the Warriors Development team. Thomas and Kane say the trials were “difficult and intense” and they will work hard to work their way up the ladder. “Being on this team is a good opportunity and a great way to get your name out there,” says Kane. More than 50 college hopefuls tried out for the squad at Bay of Islands College. The facility will consist of a concrete helipad 8m in diameter with a concrete/ metalled driveway connection between the existing carpark and helipad itself. There will also be floodlighting and a strobe light on the external east side of the gymnasium. Coupled with the lighting, there will also be an autolighting system installed — where the approaching NEST helicopter can activate the lights by remote. Mr Blundell said the Ruawai Lions Club has been busy fundraising for the remote lighting and the project and ongoing maintenance will be funded by
Lions and local Ruawai businesses. “The helipad and lighting means we have a central point, where an ambulance for instance can head to should an enroute emergency with a patient occur. My involvement with Ruawai Volunteer Fire Brigade means I have seen first hand the difference these services can make.” NEST emergency flights have carried in excess of 17,000 patients to date and at least one third of its flight operations are carried out at night, with pilots and crew having to use night vision goggles in remote area landings.

Brigade gets social
Redhill renovation begins
by Ayla Miller
by Joanne Speechly
Social media is being used to keep the community up to date regarding the work of the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Restoration work on Redhill Youth Camp is now underway thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and widespread support from the community.
The Dargaville volunteer firefighters outside their station
With almost 1,400 ‘likes’, the brigade’s Facebook page has become a hot topic of conversation in the community. The page includes updated information, photos and videos of the work these men and women carry out. “We have seen a few other fire brigades around the country doing similar things so we have jumped on board,” says Deputy Chief Michael Ross. He says it was partially motivated by community curiosity. “People often wonder why the siren goes off and we now have updates on the Facebook page.
“When the papers used to come out every day everyone used to know what the emergency services were doing but now they only come out once a week and people still like to know what’s going on. It also helps spread awareness and fire safety messages. “We are about 10 volunteers down at the moment so are hoping more exposure will encourage people to get involved. We have had an extraordinarily busy summer with a few accidents and suspicious fires, not to mention a cat-in-drain situation. There have been a few feel-good stories.”
It was decided over two meetings last year that if the Methodist camp was to continue, urgent upgrade work was required. A new management committee was formed and an assessment of the camp buildings revealed that an estimated $30,000 would be needed to bring the property up to certificate of fitness standard. “The Methodist Church of New Zealand has given Hard at work: Robbie Parker and Bill Sheppard helped to install new roofing material at Redhill Youth Camp the committee a substantial contribution and Te Taha Maori has weather for two days, staying overnight pledged a further amount. The golden years Quality of life for an aging population by Andy Bryenton
New Zealand’s population is in the midst of the largest demographic transition we have experienced since the end of World War Two. It is a natural process, but one which will shape the face of our society going into the middle of the 21st Century, changing the way we live and presenting unique new challenges and opportunities. And while the effects of this change will be felt everywhere, it is here in the Kaipara that the effects of an aging population will be perhaps most clearly apparent, due to the combination of climate and resources which make our region so appealing to retirees. Statistics New Zealand predicted as early as 2006 that within the next two decades the number of Kiwis aged over 65 will rise to encompass one quarter of the population. That’s close to 1.5 million older citizens, born in the heyday of the 1950s ‘baby boom’, all seeking a better lifestyle after years of hard work in the civic centres of our country. It’s natural that many of these folks will turn their attention north to the sunnier climes and natural beauty of the Kaipara, with relatively reasonable property prices, access to coastlines, lakes and forests, and the amenities of towns such as Dargaville providing medical services, retail, and a swift transport link to Auckland. At the same time, advances in medical care mean that these over 65s will likely have many happy and productive years ahead of them when they finally down tools and enjoy some well-earned rest. Indeed, if statistics are to be believed, many will continue to work well into their 70s, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the region. All of which brings into focus the importance of having a good infrastructure to support what may become the biggest, fastest growing sector of our local population. It is already noteworthy that Dargaville boasts full
hospital facilities for increased medical care and coverage, but an expansion may well be needed to on-call services to preserve the independence of older residents choosing to remain in their own homes. Some of these may well be in far-flung or remote areas, chosen for their natural beauty rather than their accessibility to care. Villages, such as those situated in Maungaturoto, at Riverdale in Dargaville, or the Masonic villages maintained by the regional trust are likely to grow; indeed, this option may become the largest driver of the building market by 2050. Inevitably, retirement homes with full care on site will also have to grow to meet demand. An example is the recent expansion at Dargaville’s Norfolk Court — now equipped with full facilities not just for round-the-clock nursing care, but also including 18 hospital beds for those who require a higher tier of support. It’s pertinent to note that dementia care is also in high demand already across the country, and while this can be a difficult subject to discuss, it is one which must be addressed with compassion and resources to ensure quality of life
for seniors affected by conditions such as Alzheimers. Across the nation, families, individuals and whole agencies of government are preparing for this seismic shift in our population. Here in the north, we are prepared to face the challenges and

Getting down to business by by Ayla Miller
The Dargaville Business Forum is gearing up to boost the potential of commerce in Dargaville, with sub committees covering beautification, selling the town, events and welcoming new businesses into the area. Forum member Sharon George says they will be holding after work drinks at the Central Hotel on March 31 as part of a support network for local businesses. “There have been about 20 new businesses opening up recently and we are holding this event so everyone can get to know each other. “The forum provides a support system for businesses and hopes to draw them all together so we can work on creating a positive environment in Dargaville. Chairperson Pat Milich says: “The business forum has been running for four years. We have a lot of young enthusiastic people and are really making some progress.” For updates and more information see Dargaville Business Forum Facebook page or email chairperson66@ gmail.com.

Margaret Bishop had the idea when she and husband John were tasked with taking down some promotional flags recently. “I said to John ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have some Commemorative sails that could fly for several weeks before ANZAC Day?’ and he said ‘Well, if you think it’s a good idea, do something about it’ — so I did. “We’ve already raised enough money for four sets of flags and we’re aiming for seven sets in total. “People who wish to donate can do so at BNZ Bank, ANZ Bank or MOA and if they need a receipt, they can leave a donation with me at Newman Engineering.”

Margaret says she is on a mission to make sure that people in the Kaipara — particularly in Dargaville and its environs — remember those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today. “Because we are a bit late for funding from outside the district at this point, we need to ask the residents, service clubs and business people in Dargaville to dig deep in their pockets to assist us to raise funds for these new Commemorative Sails.” The plan is to fly the new sails during the months of March and April each year. Each set of banners cost $722 plus GST.
