 As a mark of respect for the victims of the recent terrorist attack in Christchurch, more than 200 people in the Northern Wairoa community united in support for those affected. The vigil was held on Friday, March 22, at the Dargaville Taha Awa Riverside Gardens where the large crowd gathered to share and take a stand against racism and violence. Many women wore headscarves in solidarity, and there was a strong police presence. The Northern Wairoa Anglican Church bells rang at 1.40pm to signal a moment of silence, reflection, prayer and remembrance for folk of all denominations and creeds.

Dargaville residents gathered to welcome competing cyclists in the BDO Tour of Northland 2019 as they arrived last Saturday. The cyclists ended the third of four stages at the band rotunda, then made their way to the Northern Wairoa Boating Club area for festivities.

The 243 cyclists began arriving around mid-morning after an early start from Opononi and the Hokianga Harbour. The stage was 83 kilometres long, travelling through the native bush and kauri trees of Waipoua Forest to Dargaville, where

the Dargaville Community Development Board had prepared a friendly welcome. Tables and umbrellas were on the lawn area at the boating club, flags were flying, and a band played, creating an upbeat atmosphere while

the competitors enjoyed refreshments and massages. Many cyclists reportedly said Dargaville was the most welcoming of their stops. continued on page 3 …

There were also classic and vintage cars on display, and visitors mingled to admire the sights. The display was followed by an entertaining and educational event hosted by the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club and the day finished up with a steampunk burlesque cabaret at the Lighthouse Function Centre.

Tip protest seeks wider Kaipara support

Pedal power hits Kaipara

 by Paul Campbell

A group opposed to plans for a landfill for Auckland rubbish on 1,000 hectares in the Dome Valley is concerned that iwi and other locals around Kaipara are not aware of the plan, following a hui last weekend in Helensville. The incorporated society, Fight the Tip: Tiake te Whenua, has opened a petition to parliament after Waste Management received Overseas Investment Office approval to buy the property. The group says hazardous waste from the landfill could leach into the Kaipara Harbour via the Hoteo River, which runs through the site. At Saturday’s hui, Waste Management presented their proposal once again, and Fight the Tip member, Michelle Carmichael said it was “very surprising to hear that iwi and locals around the Kaipara are still completely unaware of this proposal. “It shows that consultation up until now has not included a wider iwi or community audience in the areas that could be affected by this landfill. “Many members of our group were able to attend to raise people’s awareness of the potential threat this proposal poses to the Hoteo and Kaipara Harbour. “We had to help keep Waste Management’s message a bit more open and honest, and when they did

share a slide of the waterways, the audience were shocked at the extensive catchment this landfill is proposed to be sited in.” Another cause for concern is the massive movement of trucks carrying refuse through the Dome Valley, already a dangerous section of SH1. Land Information minister Eugenie Sage says approval was given because Auckland’s current landfills are nearly at capacity and population growth dictates a new site is required. For petition details: facebook.com/ FightWMSavetheDome. 

“It had a nice feeling and cyclists said they felt appreciated and welcomed and enjoyed the Dargaville experience,” said DCDB event facilitator, Janeen Hunter. Two local residents, Brian Hutchings and Brian Lowe, represented Dargaville and placed 188th and 189th after stage three, around 52 minutes after the leader but one and a half hours ahead of the slowest rider. A stage prizegiving was held by the organisers of the event, Dynamo Events, and in addition, the DCDB provided a prize package for two. That included a two-night stay at a nearby bed and breakfast, a fishing cruise on the harbour, a riverboat cruise, a meal

voucher and goodie bags promoting all Dargaville has to offer. The beginning of stage four was started in thick fog from the boating club area before winding through the Tangowahine Valley en route to the finish line at Whangarei. A neutral zone with official vehicles flashing their lights in front of and behind the cyclists ensured safety and visibility for other motorists. Traffic on the roads was reportedly very respectful of the cyclists queuing behind until able to pass. “Roadworks on bridges through Tangowahine Valley were a challenge for all cyclists,” said Dargaville competitor, Brian Lowe. 

WETLANDS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF NORTHLANDS ENVIRONMENT

NRC are asking land owners to be responsible and do the right thing regarding wetlands on their properties. Wetlands serve often underappreciated but crucial environmental roles, which include filtering, absorbing and storing excess rain and floodwaters for dry periods. They are most importantly crucial to the health of our biodiversity survival in Northland. Northland Regional Council has rules governing what can be done in and near significant wetlands (that is, most wetlands in Northland). This includes drainage affecting water flows into or out of the wetland, building structures, clearing or excavating. Before you start any work, get advice from the lands team at NRC. Funding contributions towards fencing stock out of our wetlands and/or planting riparian margins may be available through the Northland Regional Council’s Environmental Fund. Mayor’s Memo Kia ora Shock and sadness following the recent terror events in Christchurch have resonated across the country and around the world. I am sad for those who are in pain, grief or fear at this time. I join with others in condemning hatred and extreme views of all types, and instead seek to celebrate diversity and openness in our communities. Welcoming all people to our increasingly-diverse Kaipara is central to this Council’s vision of ‘Thriving Communities Working Together’. Openness, inclusiveness, that friendly Kaipara kindness and smile — these virtues are attractive and help this place grow. In Kaipara we’re building bridges not walls (hey — Matakohe, Tomarata, Hakaru!) and rolling out the welcome mat to Kaipara.

It’s a delight to me when people, whether kiwis from other regions or new immigrants, choose to make Kaipara their home because it’s a reflection of our openness as a community. We must be doing something right and have much to celebrate here, as Kaipara is now the fastest growing district in the North Island with annual population growth of 3.1%. For all of us this is a great big meltingpot of a place, and becoming greater and bigger every day.

five or six, at each of these more than a dozen new citizens join us and pledge to become New Zealanders. It’s a joyous event, filled with hope, optimism and the energy of new beginnings. These new citizens add greatly to the diversity of our community, bring added richness to the social and cultural fabric of Kaipara and I’m always delighted they choose to start their New Zealand citizen story in Kaipara. As someone who also started his kiwi story in Kaipara (when I was born here) I always say to our new citizens they got to choose their place and they chose well but I didn’t have any choice and instead just got lucky! In Kaipara I hope we’ll continue to build bridges not walls, reach out to those around us and remember to keep that friendly Kaipara kindness and smile as we go. Simply, let’s keep growing the kind in Kaipara. Nga mihi nui,

Jason

Kauri Museum appointment Regional development crusade  by Jill Dickie

The Kauri Museum at Matakohe has appointed Dr Tracey Wedge to the role of general manager. Three senior management positions had been disestablished during 2018, and Dr Wedge was assigned as acting general manager in the interim.

“The Kauri Museum captures and displays unique stories of the kauri tree, its associated industries and the community. It is a privilege to have been appointed as general manager for at this iconic museum, which is an important asset for the region and the nation,” said Dr Wedge. Previously employed at the museum as collections manager curator, Dr Wedge brings years of experience in heritage institutions to the role. NorthChamber chief executive Steve Smith has revealed the organisation’s key strategic goals at its recent AGM to help fast track Northland-wide regional development. “I want to see Northland get ahead once and for all, but that is going to take collaboration and real drive from a number of stakeholders and individuals within our community,” says Smith. “We have massive opportunity to take our region forward at a pace not seen before, due to the calibre of businesses, individuals and community organisations in our midst. For us to really take a leap forward we have to get our heads together to focus on thought leadership, commit to a set of common goals and press go. I am particularly focussed on how we can improve Northland’s roading infrastructure.”

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

His comments came on the back of Future Crunch, a recently-held thought leadership seminar led by keynote speaker and scientist, Tane Hunter. Future Crunch is the first of NorthChamber’s new thought leadership programmes. Smith considers thought leadership amongst the most critical battles of the new business era. “The impact of science and technology is something that is not intuitive to most business leaders. NorthChamber’s thought leadership programme is designed to throw light on many misunderstood areas of up and coming technology and its impact on commerce and industry,” he said.

Harrier hawks galore O ver the past month, we have been working on repairs and upgrades to Sparky’s kiwi pen – part of which was removing trees that have grown very big and damaged the netting on his roof. With winter just around the corner, we now have to cover the netting along two sides to give Sparky protection from the rain and cold winds. To do this work, we had to raise funds courtesy of Rainbows Relics in Clyde St holding a garage sale which brought in $1300 - so a huge thanks to Sandi and Ian, plus another lady who dropped in $150. Funding from Northpower and Bayer NZ Ltd is what has helped keep the Centre running each year - and we are thankful for that long-term support - but those funds cannot be used for any upgrades. Another item we are looking at getting is a cordless drill set because with the right gear, we can do most of the maintenance ourselves which saves us quite a bit.

We get requests for bird boxes, so I gave a plan for bird boxes to a friend of mine and we now have boxes that are made correctly. These are selling for $30 each. If you are interested, phone the Centre or call in and have a look. Over the past month, we have received 12 harrier hawks, nine young tuis and now we are getting many kingfishers.

I think the very hot weather has made life hard for these birds but this will change with the colder weather starting. We have had a good release rate with the harrier hawks which is really pleasing, so we now only have three recovering. Robert and Robyn Webb.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE

ADVERTORIAL

New vision for Paparoa New horizons beckon for Paparoa, as the forward-thinking town prepares to face the future with a new development for both retirement living and living the country lifestyle.

Named Wai Oranga Rua, the name reflects not only the two small streams that border the property but also the two separate aspects of the development. Firstly, providing small lots suitable for senior living and secondly the larger lots for family size dwellings. With meeting the demands for a better lifestyle for our above 65s acknowledged as a near-future concern nationwide, the Paparoa Community Charitable Trust took steps to begin this landmark project, knowing that it would be met with enthusiasm. It has certainly been the case, and the granting of a Resource Consent by Kaipara District Council allows the project to move to the next stage, where the sections are presented to potential buyers. The subdivision has been carefully planned to allow for senior living on smaller lots in a quiet, secure village-like environment. Pedestrian linkages to the village of Paparoa are conveniently placed. The site is flat and

sunny with views over farmland and the Paparoa Showgrounds. These lots are designed for two-bedroom dwellings suitable for senior residents. It is a requirement that at least one of the residents of these smaller homes be the age of 65 or above. To celebrate this milestone and show potential new neighbours the views, amenities and picturesque surroundings of this latest Paparoa development, the real estate agencies who have put their wholehearted support into the project First National Roper and Jones Real Estate and Ray White Bogue Real Estate are joining forces with other key contributors to arrange a big open day on April 6 from 10am to 2pm at 113 Franklin Road Paparoa. All are invited to come along and see a glimpse of the future, as the vision of the Paparoa Community Charitable Trust becomes a reality. Please contact Jill Wilson on 021 505 712 or Keith Shadbolt on 021 402 122 for more information

WHO’S WHO IN KAIWAKA/WELLSFORD Don’t walk, dance  by Jill Dickie

Wellsford Rockers is a group of like-minded friends who love to dance, offering lessons, workshops and social dancing to beginners and the more advanced. Rock and roll, swing and rockabilly classes are held on Monday nights from 7pm at the Coop Church Hall on Rodney Street. The group was started by four friends who loved to dance, listen to and dress in the style of the 1950s and sharing knowledge and love of the genre with the community of Wellsford was their main aim. The concept was so successful they now draw people from Mangawhai, Warkwor th, Kaiwaka and even further afield. When two of the founding members retired the remaining couple, Craig and Debbie Stevenson, continued to build the club with weekly dance classes, social evenings and twice-yearly themed dances. “We enjoy teaching, meeting new people and occasionally giving

demonstrations and joining in with community events,” said Debbie. “We have danced in the Wellsford Santa Parade, raised funds for community groups such as the Rodney College hockey team and Coastguard, plus held fundraising club nights for Blue September and other worthy causes from time to time.” Classes are fun, easy to follow and no partner is necessarily required and supported by a team of experienced, friendly helpers who will help get even ‘two left feet dancers’ moving to the beat. Social dancing and light refreshments follow the $5 classes. For more information contact Debbie at 09 423 8024. 

WHO’S WHO IN KAIWAKA/WELLSFORD Henderson wins open final After more than 11 years away from the sport in New Zealand Kaiwaka shearer, Toa Henderson won the Warkworth A&P Show Open shearing final on March 16. His return to the domestic shearing scene is reported as a boost to the region where sheep numbers and shearers have declined. Henderson faced quality competition to beat former Golden Shears runner-up and multiple finalist Digger Balme from Otorohanga and former Golden Shears quarterfinalists Phil Wedd from Silverdale and Neville Osborne from Tangowahine, both recent winners at shows in Northland. Last competing in 2008, Henderson and his brother vied for top placings. Five times they were the quinella during a season in which Toa Henderson won six of his thirteen finals and was runner-up to his brother in the senior rankings. “I am hoping to get back into next year, as I have moved back to New Zealand,” he said and when asked

Kaipara young farmer success  by Jill Dickie

Wellsford dairy farmer, Daniel Richards, has won the innovation award at his second regional final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition, following on from his win at the district finals in November 2018. A member of the Kaipara Young Farmers Club for three years, 21-year-old Richards manages his parents’ 300-cow dairy farm at Tomarata, east of Wellsford. He has achieved several extra qualifications through Primary ITO, studying topics such as milk quality, animal husbandr y and Growsafe chemical handling. Richards said his first regional final was in 2017 and taking part has built his confidence for future competitions. In preparation ahead of the regional final he worked on improving his theory and general knowledge but enjoys the practical side of the contest. “It’s a fun day, and it opens your mind up to other areas of farming that you’re not used to. I was expecting to do well in the district contest, and  Wellsford dairy farmer, Daniel Richards, represented after placing first, I was feeling Kaipara Young Farmers Club in the regional final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year quietly confident that I could give the contest a good go.” Richards and his brother also entered The FMG Young Farmer of the Year the Northland fencing competition in final is being held in Hawke’s Bay in July 2018 and finished in second place. this year.  NZFSA REGISTERED

Autumn means maintenance and balance  by Andy Bryenton

There’s no such thing as a quiet season in farming each change of the weather as the year rolls by brings its challenges. Those observing our farming neighbours will note that autumn heralds a time of maintenance, both of man-made machines being prepped for the harder conditions of winter, and preparation of the land and of livestock to weather Mother Nature’s onslaught. Meteorologists at NIWA predict a warmer than average autumn, but it’s a moist and tropical outlook rather than a continuation of hot and dry summer conditions. Atmospheric conditions may be affected by the tropics deep into April, with the chance that this could ‘liven up’ low-pressure systems swinging south. All in all, however, this is a typical season on the way, meaning the prime concern on the farm is twofold — maintaining vital systems and protecting them from winter weather to come and ensuring adequate feed through good pasture management. In the pasture, this means you’ll see seed drills operating as crops like maize are well finished. Undersowing is one new strand of technology, but so too is countering autumn pests before they can strike at the roots of future growth. Prudent farmers will leave plenty of postgrazing residual mass, letting pasture grow back strong as they calculate a feed budget, which will see through the colder months. Dairy NZ, as one example, says that north of Taupo, the right date to resow for better pasture

performance is March 31, not too far away. In the shed, the barn and even around the homestead, the other tasks for farming success are similar to those in residential homes. Just as the family car should see a pre-winter service for safety and reliability, so too does the

working infrastructure of agriculture. You’ll see implements and tractors being transported, and mobile vans out seeing to milking sheds, implements and even those usual leaks, drips and unswept chimneys as the nights draw in and the mornings grow misty. 

Max and Lorraine appreciate and thank all those who sent well wishes and messages of support as a result of Max's medical emergency on Baylys Beach some weeks ago. A special thank you to the persons who called emergency services. Des Subritzky, Grant Hamlet, Andy Walker, Luke Oud and Michael and Cindy Younger, who all assisted at the scene. Also the many others who showed concern. The Dargaville St John Ambulance, Fire Brigade and the Northland Rescue Helicopter service who worked their magic — a big thank you. Max is recovering well at home and expects to be playing golf and fishing in the not too distant future.
