“I will get to the bottom of New Zealand’s pre-European history if it’s the last thing I do” This clear intention was given by Noel Hilliam, co-author of the book, To the Ends of the Earth, launched on Saturday at Dargaville Town Hall. Addressing the launch gathering, he said: “I have now stepped up to the line and asked the government to set up a Royal Commission of Enquiry into the true history of New Zealand.’’ The book postulates that a race emanating from Europe settled New Zealand some centuries before the Maori arrived. On a weekend of a number of major events in Dargaville and district, the co-authors of the book, Maxwell Hill, Hilliam and Gary Cook were supported by a Town Hall packed to the doors. “Max approached us as he had done some research, and Gary and I had the back up information, including photographs taken over the years of many of the sites in question,” said Mr Hilliam. He has been researching and exploring the west coast for many years and has an unrivalled knowledge of ancient shipwrecks and other coastal features.

Page 4

He said the book launch exceeded the authors’ expectations. “We put out 450 chairs and some people had to stand as well. There were visitors from Hamilton, Tauranga, Kaitaia and Bay of Islands. We estimated that 500 had turned up. Kaipara District Mayor, Neil Tiller, officiated as master of ceremonies and MP Mike Sabin, Waitahi rangatira, George Connolly, and the book’s editor, John Aldworth, also came,” says Hilliam. continued on page 5 . . .

A wonderful weekend — and there’s more in store! With a break in the weather and a record crowd of revellers enjoying the best of Kaipara kai and hospitality this year’s Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival got off to a flying start last weekend. Visitors and locals alike flocked to Selwyn Park for a slice of the action, circulating among a field of brightly coloured marquees featuring everything from gourmet cooking to fairground fun.

A bigger beach for Tinopai The removal of dense waterside mangroves from Tinopai Beach is part of an ongoing effort to expose more areas of sand for public use but strict guidelines for the project have made for a careful operation by local residents. The Tinopai Residents and Ratepayers Improvement Society was granted permission for the mangrove clearance by the Regional Council. “There were fairly stringent guidelines,” said resident and committee member, Bobby Smith.

“We had to cut the mangroves, not pull them out, and we could only cut back trunks below 75 millimetres. Anything larger stays. The cutting is a pity, as we will have to go round keeping an eye on re-growth. We will have to see how it evolves, whether the sand covers the stumps. As part of the project, we weren’t able to use machinery on the beach, and even trailers had to be brought in just adjacent to the sand.” The clearance project is on-going, with considerable support from local people.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Kaipara harbour rolls out the welcome mat The Northern Kaipara will be host to more than 700 Albertland descendent’s over the Easter break, as they gather for the 150th anniversary of the regions’ settlement by immigrants from England, and beyond, with the first ships arriving in 1862. “The anniversary is certainly going to be busy, with some activities already over-subscribed and having to be extended,” said celebration committee chair, Steve Levet. “The headquarters for the weekend will be the Albertland Heritage Centre, in Port Albert Rd, Wellsford, and participants in the celebrations will fan out from there, on bus trips, harbour boat excursions, visits to local attractions including The Kauri Museum and historic sites around the Kaipara.”

More than 3,000 settlers arrived to settle Albertland in the 1880s, then some 70,000 acres encompassing Port Albert, Wellsford, through Te Hana, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Pahi and Matakohe. Some settlers ventured further afield and there is a world-wide diaspora today. For many, Auckland was the end of the journey. The would-be pioneers heard about primitive conditions in the north, and so settled down and were absorbed into the business, trade, and commerce of the young Auckland, or moved onwards to other provincial New Zealand homes and farms. In Kaipara, good relations were established between Chief Manakau’s people, the Ngati Whatua and the newly arriving settlers and they became somewhat interdependent.

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS 1862–2012

On location for the Albertland feature: (left/right) Paul Campbell, Kelsey Saunders and Regan Enticott at Port Albert wharf

A major influence in this regard was the Rev William Gittos, who had arrived in New Zealand at the age of 10, and after joining the Wesleyan Church, was an effective roaming missionary. The first task for the new arrivals was shelter from the elements and immediately work began on temporary homes, using whatever was available from the surrounding bush, split slab wooden sides and a thatch of nikau fronds, an open fireplace lined with ponga. In commemorating those times, the anniversary opening ceremony will be held at the Port Albert Domain and from then on buses and boats depart on Heritage trips around the Kaipara Harbour. These include a two-and-a-half hour boat trip through the Otamatea River, past historic Batley House and the original home of Rev William Gittos, who played a huge role in early Albertland. A highlight of the celebrations will be a multimedia show at the Wellsford Community Centre, featuring a 60-minute video premiered especially for the anniversary. It was co-produced by Alison Enticott and her sister, Carolyn Parris, descendants of the pioneering Inger family. The cast includes author and historian, Paul Campbell, whose Images from Albertland, a photographic history of the opening up of the early Kaipara, was especially produced for the 150th event. He narrates the story of Albertland from embarkation in London, through the long voyage to New Zealand, and the subsequent trials and tribulations of settling a strange new land. Wellsford teenagers, Regan Enticott and Kelsey Saunders, play the roles of grandchildren getting acquainted with their family history. “The project was hard work but a lot of fun,” said Alison. “Now the proof of the pudding will be in the premiere.” As well as the activity in the community centre, there will be historical displays at Port Albert Hall and a luncheon featuring a reenactment of settlement and a cultural show at Te Hana’s Te Ao Marama Cultural Centre. A major event will be the Saturday night gala dinner at Te Hana, which begins with a powhiri followed by pre-dinner drinks, then a buffet dinner followed by a re-enactment cultural show. Guests are invited to stay on and dance the night away with a live band. On Sunday April 8, there will be a Remembrance Service at Port Albert Hall followed at 11am by a launch Regatta on the harbour, and the a Country Fair/Sports Day at Port Albert Domain.

Images from Albertland This landmark commemorative book by Paul Campbell tells the story of the Albertlanders’ arrival and settling of the Kaipara area, and features many of Harold Marsh’s photographs that have been painstakingly restored.

Raft race looks to 2013 Last weekend’s raft race on the Northern Wairoa River could become an annual event with crews competing for a trophy donated in 1973. Five teams of rafters set out from Notorious East Road on a voyage to the Dargaville Boating Club ramp, vying for the Edgar Bradley Trophy, now held at the Dargaville Museum. The activity ran alonside the Kaipara Kai festival. “The event was arranged by an organising committee formed from Sport Northland, the Kaipara District Council, Northern Wairoa Boating Club and the New Zealand Police as part of the national community pride programme,” said committee member, Roxanne Kelly Frost. “It was the first time it has been held since 1997 and we want to hold it again next year, which will be the 40th anniversary of the first event in 1973.” The hour-and-a-half raft journey ended with competitors having to carry their craft ashore, and the winning team was ‘Gospel Youth’, from the Dargaville Gospel Hall, made up of Jordan Whitehead, Kimberley Whitehead, Lydia Savage, Aden Sade-Inia, Daniel Apai and Sorren Honeymans.

Controversial book launched ‘To the Ends of the Earth’ is a controversial account offering the theory that explorers from Greece were the first to set foot in New Zealand. “We have the evidence to prove it and interest is coming from all over the country, from Stewart Island to Kaitaia,” Hilliam says. “After the presentation, a book signing of the 500 copies we had on hand ran out. For those that missed we have taken orders and will send them on post free.” The foreword to the book is by environmentalist, author and TV personality, Professor David Bellamy.

A wonderful weekend — and there’s more in store! And although the day finally came to an end with a huge fireworks display on the river (organised by the Kauri Coast Promotion Society and generously funded by the Lion Foundation) the fun goes on into another week of entertainment for young and old. If a relaxed and sophisticated dinner hosted by one of New Zealand’s most iconic entertainers is your idea of a great Saturday night, then don’t miss this! The one and only Gary McCormick (poet, writer, radio host, TV personality and raconteur) will be dropping in for a night of fine cuisine, entertainment and fun at the Lighthouse. Mark this one on your social calendar in red — it’s going to be a great evening. On the other hand, you might be more at home on the dance floor. Booming bass, smoke machines and strobes set the scene for none other than the world’s best hip hop dancers, paying their first visit to Dargaville after a globe-conquering run to the top. The ‘Request’ dance crew will be joined by local hip hop crews in a spectacular dance event which is sure to get you out of your seat — and at only $10 per ticket this is a great chance to see the best in the world do their thing.

Locals remembered at Kevin Friedrich concert

A few moments were set aside to remember local people who have passed away over the last two years during the highly successful Kevin Friedrich concert at the Lighthouse Function Centre on Sunday afternoon. While Kevin, Nolene Osbaldiston and Pippa Howes played the well-known Irish tune ‘Danny Boy’, a slide show produced by photographer Ken Cashin was shown to the large audience. “We thought it would be nice to have a few minutes of musical tribute to those we have lost over the last year or two” says Kevin. Ken Cashin said that there were about 50 photos on the slides and it took about five minutes to show. “Some of the audience told me afterwards that it was nice although it brought a few tears. But it was an extremely good concert and I must say it is wonderful to have these annual musical occasions.” Many others must Marie Jones assisting Sonja Palinich to cut the ribbon to the new exhibition think so too, as there were 187 tickets sold for the event. A new look for Poppy Day

This year’s Anzac Day commemorations, the 97th, the Gallipoli landings and the 90th anniversary of the Poppy Day Appeal, will have a new look. The Returned Services Association has been undergoing a design makeover, aimed at making the organisation more relevant to today’s society, and for the past year this new image has been on the drawing board of consultants, Designworks. This Anzac, ‘Phase 3’ of the re-imaging exercise will be implemented. “The new 2012 Poppy Day Appeal will have a refreshed look in keeping with the new RSA brand for the future released late last year,” said RSA chief executive, Dr Stephen Clarke. “The National RSA will be announcing several other initiatives to commemorate Anzac Day in the coming weeks.” Dr Clarke has also defended the use of imported poppies, from China, rather than those made in IHC workshops in New Zealand in the past.

“Our national executive which represents our associations around the country has committed to a new poppy supply agreement in 2012 and will have exclusive rights for supplying poppies as requested by our membership.” However, he said following the Christchurch earthquake, the RSA there could sell from a stockpile held from before the import decision. Elsewhere, RSA’s needed to “maximise their fundraising” and a “cost-effective option for supplying poppies helped the RSA movement to do more in providing support to veterans as well as ex-servicemen and women and their families.” The appeal runs from April 16 through to a street collection on April 20, to seek funds for RSA organisations across New Zealand to work with veterans as well as ex-servicemen and women and their dependants. In 2011, $1.7M was raised. “All the money raised locally is spent locally — so money raised in a community is spent on the welfare needs of ex-servicemen and women in that community,” Dr Clarke added.

Natural Insulation use products like Bradford Gold, Autex and Expol to create a thermal blanket of warmth around your home — and they’re proud to be part of the Government’s generous EECA subsidy scheme as well. “Natural Insulation is proud to be an EECA Energywise Programme Partner,” said Natural Insulation Northland owner, Greg Silvester. “If your home was built prior to January 1, 2000, then your home is eligible for the ENERGYWISE subsidies that are available. Receive a maximum subsidy of up to $1,300 on your home insulation and $500 subsidy on clean heating installation.” Fire it up — Traditional Heating Solutions Wood fires have been a part of human civilisation for tens of thousands of years, and modern fires are a stylish and practical addition to any home. Even a small fireplace can generate enough heat to warm a large lounge room AND heat water through a ‘wet back’ system. Excess heat rising up to the ceiling can be caught and redistributed using an inexpensive heat transfer ducted fan kit.

Prepare For Winter

. . . continued from page 7

The friendly team there will deliver and hook up your gas bottles Kaipara wide, all at a very reasonable cost. They’re just the ticket for keeping your water heater, califont or cooktop nice and toasty during the colder months, and gas can work out cheaper than electricity in many situations. Mitsubishi and Fujitsu heat pumps are two of the biggest names in the business — and for good reason. These companies produce modern, quiet and incredible economical heating and cooling systems which have taken New Zealand by storm. When selecting a heat pump remember that it’s important to get the right one for the right room — both size and alignment are of huge importance if you want to get the most out of your investment. Both Laser Electrical and your local 100% stores (McKay’s in Dargaville and Fergus Appliance Spot in Maungaturoto) are able to advise you on your best options — check out their stunning pre-winter prices and book in a free home assessment. Two more vital pieces of the heating puzzle are often overlooked simply because they also serve to make your home look beautiful. Well insulated curtains from Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre will keep the cold from coming in through exposed areas of glass. Existing drapes can even be backed to add winter comfort. Alternatively, when replacing or renovating window surrounds, it’s a good idea to think about double glazing — a coming trend which is very popular in new builds. Dargaville Aluminium and Glass can advise you on the best way to implement this technology into your home. Under your feet, a thick layer of wooly carpet can serve as the best barrier against cold toes, but it also stops draughts and heat loss through the floor. You’ll notice the cosy

locally — and they offer heat transfer systems as well — a great way to tap the excess heat of your fire and have it heat you bedrooms for less than the cost of running a single light bulb! In the end it’s a combination of good ventilation, insulation, thermal heat retention and clean, inexpensive heating which make a home ready for winter. Take the first step by talking to your local experts and watch out for more top tips to beat the cold as we count down toward the shortest day of the year.

difference at once with a flooring makeover from Munns Flooring Xtra — and you may not need those slippers again! Finally, it’s worth noting that homes prone to condensation and damp may need help in the form of positive pressure ventilation. Gently dehumidifying the home with dry, warmer air from the roof cavity, these systems go by many names but can prove a life saver for homes stricken with mould and damp. 2012 PARADE OF PIGS Little piggies bring home the bacon for Project Promise Santana, Jordan, Liz and Jane get the bacon sizzling for the BNZ’s Project Promise BBQ

“Clive Wire”

CALL 09 439 7172 ANY TIME – We’re there to help!

Real local service – 24/7

It’s official — Dargaville has been overrun by little pink invaders. The costumed, hilariously posed and downright cute piggy banks from the BNZ’s Project Promise fundraiser have taken the town by storm, and some truly inventive creativity is on display in the shop windows and counters of Dargaville’s big-hearted business people. Proving once again that the only thing that exceeds the generosity of Kaipara folks is their artistic flair, we have some more porcine works of art for your enjoyment on display today,

though the full range will soon be gathered together in the BNZ bank for all to see. Bank manager Chad Lowen and his staff offer their sincerest thanks to all the people who have taken part to make this year’s parade of pigs the biggest the town has seen, complete with a barbecue held on Friday to raise money for Project Promise’s planned oncology hospital.

Santana, Liz, Jane and Jordan at the BNZ Project Promise Barbeque.

When completed, this centre will provide world class care to those in treatment for cancer, giving their families the opportunity to stay with them during treatment and reducing the gruelling travel schedules which cancer patients now face with many vital facilities based only in Auckland. Each coin dropped into a decorated piggy bank makes this plan come a little closer to fruition, as does each donation to enter the ‘dress the piggy’ contest by local business people.

In the meantime Chad would like to remind all entrants that it’s time to bring the pigs home — all completed pigs should be delivered to the display area in the BNZ’s Dargaville branch by the end of March so that the public voting for best dressed piggy can begin. To all those involved in this year’s parade of pigs, congratulations. As well as showing some great community spirit and helping out with a very worthy cause, you’ve also put on a show of artistic talent which would be envied in the great galleries of Europe. Well — those ones which really like pigs, anyway!

Painting the town green — and orange! It’s RD1 Ruawai’s grand opening this week — there’s been a big change in the Kaipara town, seeing their prime agricultural supplier go from blue and gold to bright green and orange. New store manager Shanelle Wray and her team have pulled out all the stops to make the transition from Ruawai Farm Supplies to New Zealand’s latest branch of the RD1 family a smooth one — and they’d like to thank previous owners Trevor Harris and Heather Logue for all their support during this time. After all, the plan all along has been to keep up the friendly local service Ruawai Farm Supplies was famous for, while adding the savings and bargains a big buying group like RD1 can offer. The former Ruawai Farm Supplies store has been rebranded into a trademark orange and green RD1 store and stocked full of products ranging from dairy supplies to apparel and housewares. Grand opening specials will run all day Friday March 30 and until noon on Saturday March 31, but as a 100 percent Kiwi owned business linked into the dairy industry at the grass roots level through Fonterra, the savings will be ongoing for Ruawai farmers. Shanelle, previously team leader at RD1’s big Whangarei branch, grew up on dairy farms and really knows the agricultural business. “I’m very excited to be leading this team, having the opportunity to bring RD1’s services to the

Matt, Shanelle and Adrienne outside the bright new RD1 in Ruawai

community,” she says. “And I really appreciate the warm reception I’ve had from everyone in Ruawai.” Ably assisting the new store manager are Adrienne Hardstaff, a familiar Ruawai face and long-term Farm Supplies employee, Matt Bradley — also a familiar local who has been part of the Farm Supplies team for three years now — and Shaun Ruddell, who brings a lifetime of farming experience to his job of making sure farmers get sound advice and what they need from RD1’s newest branch. Stop by and pay the team a visit during their opening weekend — it’s the beginning of what will be a very prosperous chapter in Ruawai farming history!

A winning Kaipara catch

End of a Maungaturoto era Maungaturoto’s popular post centre, book and stationary shop and Lotto outlet, Tony’s, is changing hands. “After 13 years, it’s time for a bit of a break,” says the owner of the Hurndall Street business, Andrea Allen. “It’s been a great experience and many wonderful customers. One of the major things has been seeing how Lotto has developed and changed over the years, with Big Wednesday and other changes. The post centre has been busier all the time too, with postal and Land Transport services. “But now, it’s time for a good holiday, then to put the feet up for a while and also catch up with jobs around the home. Then perhaps I’ll look for some part-time work here in town. We will be staying in Maungaturoto.”

Andrea Allen at the Lotto counter of Tony’s — looking forward to a good holiday

Regular customer, Ralph Williams, a local author who has books on the shop shelves, says “it’s a bit of an end of an era, and we will all miss Andrea like heck. A hard act to follow.” The new owners of Tony’s will be Garesh Kripa Ltd, from Paihia.

A keen Kaipara fisher says his harbour has come up trumps again. Andrew Kenny took out first and third snapper prizes in last weekend’s Kaiwaka-based Point Curtis Cruising Club’s open fishing contest, which included both coasts. “I was aboard the Gravy Boat and we headed for the Graveyard, a little further than we usually venture from Pahi, where the inner harbour is our usual choice,” said Andrew. “I hooked up a 6.3kg snapper for the first prize of $200 and a 5.7kg fish for third place and a prize of some fishing gear. Then I was pipped for the best Kahawai — by half a kilo,” he quipped.

Mangawhai Art Trail March Saturday 31st – April Sunday 1st 10am to 5pm

The Mangawhai Artist Association members have surpassed themselves this year with 47 artists participating. The art works displayed are very exciting in their originality and the diverse range of mediums used - oils, acrylics, water colours, photography, glass, pottery, Oamaru stone, wood, flax, silk, and precious metals. All these art mediums have been used by the artists to create inspired and distinctive art and jewellery. This free event is really worth visiting, spending a day or the whole weekend in Magical Mangawhai. A map showing where all the venues are located can be picked at the Mangawhai Information Centre, the new Museum, www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz, or anywhere the distinctive pink flags are displayed.

This is an informal group that shares experiences and supports each other.
