Three public meetings have been held by the Northpower Electric Power Trust to seek feedback from consumers over share ownership and the options they face. The review on the future of shareholder ownership is required to take place every five years and encourages the public to have a say ”by telling trustees what you want and any thoughts and ideas,” said chairman Erc Angelo. Mr Gent said there was a trade-off as people needed to be in shops, but that was covered by provisions for time off in lieu of holiday work. Before the decision, council received 35 public submissions on the opening proposal with 19 in favour, 13 opposed, and three remaining neutral. Chairman of the Dargaville business forum, Peter Boyd said: “From my perspective I’m all for it as the main thing is that it’s giving people the option. Vintage day out planned

Ambulance appeal

 by Joanna Manson

 by Joanna Manson

The Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club will be bringing its engines to life at a ‘Crank up day’ on April 1 at Harding Park.

The St John Heart of Gold Annual Appeal is running from April 3–9 and the Northern Wairoa unit is hoping not only to raise money, but also recruit new volunteers in the process.

 Pamela Parkinson, Michael Buckley and Bethany Godfrey demonstrating pioneer household chores at the 2016 ‘Crank up day’

This year the committee is hoping to attract a range of newcomers to the event “especially those who have never been to Harding Park or our tractor museum,” says club president, Bill Fitness. A swap meet has also been arranged for the day and Bill is encouraging people to bring along car parts and various other household items to swap and trade. Popular demonstrations will also return on the day including the campfire and sheep shearing. “Old time bushman Keith Hansen will be demonstrating cooking on a campfire and people can buy his stew

for lunch. There will also be a two-stand shearing and crutching display as well as tractors being driven around. “We have some new machines on display and we have recently restored a Farmall Cub, bulldozers and a lot of small stuff. It’s a big job just keeping them all going and we’re always restoring — it’s definitely worth a look,” he said. The club has been running for 15 years and Bill says a lot of preparation goes into the ‘crank up’ days which give a glimpse into life back in time. The day kicks off at 10.30am with a $5 entry and $10 fee for a swap meet site. 

Revitalising our tourist roads

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER March 28 - 2017

 by Joanna Manson

The 16-year-old Twin Coast Discovery Highway is about to get a marketing makeover as part of ‘Northland Journeys — the Byways’ project — placing the Ancient Kauri Trail from Maungaturoto to Omapare on the tourist map. Regional economic development agency, Northland Inc, launched three new Northland road-based journeys on March 22, which is expected to bring an extra $20 million to the region’s economy. CEO David Wilson said: “Northland could benefit from promoting distinctive sub-regions and expanding the touring route from one highway into a set of distinctive byways, encouraging visitors to experience more of what Northland has to offer.” The first three road journeys being promoted include Where Giants Gather, the journey from Whangarei Town Basin to the Whangarei Heads. The Ancient Kauri Trail, the journey from Maungaturoto to Omapere, and Into the Wide Blue Yonder, the journey from Whangarei Falls to Tutukaka and on to Hikurangi. The Ancient Kauri Trail, which features Kaipara, details the road by saying ‘follow the road through the Kumara Capital, and feel the

The project is funded by Nor thland Regional Council as a result of engagement with local tourism businesses, communities and promotions groups, with a focus on building authentic and interesting visitor experiences. “We know that tourists are now more interested in deeper engagement with the destination and its hosts, and all it has to offer. Byways give us the opportunity to deliver on that promise,” said Mr Wilson. He said maps have been designed to outline the three new journeys and each will feature on visitor publications, tourism websites and a new mobile app. Northland Inc will roll out another five road journeys this year with promises of many others to come. 

Challenging weather for birds First it was the drought making it a very hard job for kiwi chicks to find food and water and now it’s too much water - you just can’t win at this time of the year! The little kiwi chick we received just after Christmas was very de-hydrated and at 219 grams was close to dying. It was lucky the landowner found him just in time. Now his weight is 475 grams and he is ready to be returned back to the area once the weather improves. It wasn’t too many years ago that any kiwi chick was held it they reached a weight of 1200 grams. Nowadays there are so many people doing so much work on predator control that some areas are safe to release a chick when it reaches 500 grams, which just shows what can be achieved when we all work together. Like any wild kiwi or bird, the sooner they can be released the better for them. The little morepork (ruru) that I released back at Tangitarori School was a real education day for the school.

The children were part of the rescue and also took part in the release. It was a chance to talk with them about how important conservation is and why. There is no doubt about it, the country schools are right behind looking after nature. With all the wet weather, we have received a run of harrier hawks. They get very wet and lose their water protected coating very quickly. The dry hot weather made finding food very hard so now they are taking big risks gathering food while they can and getting into all sorts of trouble. We have had a good start to the new year with most of the birds being released after a few days. So far we have released seven harrier hawks, six moreporks, eight native pigeons, six tuis and four kingfishers, plus quite a few sea birds. At this time we have five new hawks and two kingfishers but by the time this goes to print, I guess this number will be well up due to the foul weather. If you ring the Recovery Centre about a bird and get the answer phone, please leave a contact number so we can get back to you, as we could be outside working in one of the aviaries or be with visitors. And if you find any bird in trouble just keep them warm and quiet. Please don’t try and feed them or give them water as most birds will go without food or water for 24 hours after being hurt. Once they calm down then they will start eating. Robert and Robyn Webb and Staff.

Trillian trek in town  by Anna Harding

The Trillian Trek, formerly the Variety Bash, came through Kaipara last week. The 135 trekkers drove up from Matamata to Cape Reinga, marking the group’s 27th year, and over those years more than 20 million dollars has been raised for Kiwi kids in need. Their first stop was at Wellsford Primary school before carrying on to Dargaville to stay the night where the Kumarani circus performed for them in the town hall. The next morning they visited Dargaville Primary School and treated students to a magic show, sports games, free giveaways and a water and foam hose off from vintage fire trucks on the school field. Next it was off to the Kai Iwi lakes for a picnic lunch via the back roads. While sitting atop a zebra striped vintage fire truck, long time participants Richard Varcoe and Claudine Murray

explained that they’re given route instructions by officials every morning, and there are always a few surprises along the way. The trek director, Murray O’Donnell is passionate about taking the trekkers to new places. “We like to do things a little differently. It’s all about making a difference, where we can to Kiwi kids and their families — kids who need a bit of a helping hand. Many of these little schools we are visiting on this trip are off the beaten track and sometimes get forgotten.” The owner of a blue fire truck representing BestStart, Morris Danks says “it’s fantastic up here in Kaipara. A really nice little area and so friendly, we get looked after by the locals. We went into a petrol station to get some ice and they just refused to let us pay.” 

Tsunami siren testing  by Joanna Manson

Sirens from the far north to Mangawhai will be tested on Sunday, April 2 as part of a twice-yearly check to ensure they are working correctly. Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management spokesperson Victoria Randall said the sirens will sound at 9.20am for 10 minutes and again at 10am for just 30 seconds. “Civil Defence community groups or local council staff will monitor the sirens at these times, reporting any faults for repair,” she said. The Kaipara district has 14 tsunami sirens which are the size of a shoebox and are attached to Northpower or Top Energy power poles in communities along the coast. “We’re expanding the tsunami siren network to help maximise the number of people that hear  Victoria Randall, spokesperson for the Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group, alerting from this source, and of checks incoming tsunami siren testing reports from course, we want people to pass around Northland those alerts on to others,” Ms Randall said. safe,” she said. PREPARE FOR WINTER Prepare a warm winter retreat  by Andy Bryenton

With daylight savings set to end this week and winter just around the corner, it’s time to take stock and make a checklist of all those necessary chores which ensure a warm and comfortable season. While it’s always good advice to plan early, this year it’s even more important, as an upsurge in home buying and renovations puts a waiting list on many of the big jobs popular before the rain and cold set in. For those looking to stop

condensation and damp, now is the time to talk to ventilation system installers and insulation providers. Thermal drapes take time to sew, and even critical small items such as bathroom and kitchen extractor fans need the professional touch. Roof leaks uncovered by recent rains will also be high on the list, but it’s that country favourite combination of the roaring hot fireplace and stacks of dry, seasoned firewood, which is at the forefront of most minds. There are two important facets to getting ready for a season of indoor fires. Both accentuate safety, because as any firefighter will tell you, our greatest invention can also be a deadly enemy if not treated with respect. For this reason many insurance companies insist that fireplaces are inspected and chimneys swept yearly to prevent a buildup of combustible soot. Soot can also be kept down by ensuring that the wood you burn is well dried and seasoned — stored up in a dry wood shed or well

tarped down to keep out the rain. Key to this chore is another top tool — the chainsaw. Safety comes first here as well, and it’s a highly advisable idea to have your saw checked out pre-season by a small engine professional. A sharp chain and a full suite of safety wear — goggles, gloves, chaps, boots and ear protection — is what the forestry trade insist on, and it should be the rule at home as well. With an ample store of

firewood and a well-installed, clean and functional fireplace, home heating will be a snap. For those without, modern heat pumps can slash energy bills this winter. Team up reliable cost-effective heating with insulation to keep the warmth and ample air flow — through ventilation and extractors — to beat the damp. With all three in place you’ll be healthier and better able to fight colds and flu this winter. 

Head into winter with confidence  by Andy Bryenton

As the housing market in Auckland continues to pick up, recent statistics show that more than 40 per cent of home buyers are now investors rather than intended occupiers. This trend has spread to the provinces and to our region, as those looking to grasp a hold on the property ladder choose to invest in the Kaipara. With new regulations for landlords, however, there is a little trepidation about what to expect — and what is required — for this coming winter. Guidelines for insulation, for example, have spurred a mini boom for this industry, but there’s still a bottleneck expected before the 2019 full-implementation date. The best advice for those looking to invest in rental property comes from within the real estate industry, and it’s simple — avoid the false economy of managing your own rental. Let a professional find your tenants and manage their residency, sorting out repairs before they become problems and isolating prior offenders before they are through the door. The vast majority of rental tenants are good and honest folks, but the other aspect here is picking the right property. A ‘fixer-upper’ may no longer be the single best choice as a rental investment — but once again, consulting with a professional who knows the rules and new obligations of landlords will help establish what work needs to be done to meet both current

and future standards. Issues such as weathertightness, heating, insulation and water and electrical infrastructure are more easily assessed by those who have done this many times before. Your local real estate professionals also keep a list of trusted tradies who can take care of necessary work. Once again, these will likely be tried and tested pros with a good track record.

Plan ahead for your family’s future  by Andy Bryenton

With a new season and a new financial year nearly upon us, it’s a good time to take stock of the present and plan for the future. In many aspects of life, the law is there to ensure your wishes are carried out even in the case of the unexpected — but many of us put off dealing with legal matters until it is too late. Two major facets of planning for the future, with the help of a legal professional, are Wills and Enduring Power of Attorney. Designed to help guide a path to a lasting legacy, it’s important to have clear and properly instituted documents in place to cover all eventualities. The team at PAG Law in Dargaville have plenty of

experience with Wills, and advise putting one in place if it’s not something you have addressed as yet. And if it’s been awhile since you’ve put a Will together, they advise taking a fresh look — family circumstances change along with your assets over time, or your priorities may have become very different. It’s also worth

noting that marriage invalidates any Will written during your single life — a new one for both parties is required for the future. Enduring Powers of Attorney are designed to help ease stress and ensure you are looked after well into your ‘golden years’. As we live longer, the possibility of the need for care and the eventuality that we may become unable to look after our own affairs and finances grows. Having a trusted person on hand with an Enduring Power of Attorney is a great way to achieve peace of mind. Without an Enduring Power of Attorney in place, your family may need to go to the Family Court to appoint someone to

act for you if you can no longer manage your own affairs, which would be a costly exercise. The PAG Law team are there to assist with both of these ‘legacy projects’ under the law — and they can offer good advice for those tackling such issues for the first time. They are able to listen to your needs and advise you accordingly and to ensure that your needs are met. For example, new lawyer on the team Lina Khan is experienced in residential tenancy matters — a valuable skill set for property and rental investors. Director, Amanda Matich has extensive experience in structuring property ownership along with business and commercial experience.

While those in town share certain aspects of prepping for winter with their rural neighbours, such as ensuring adequate heating, ventilation and insulation for the home, the reality for the average farmer is that winter can bring more than just discomfort. Storms and floods are not unknown in the midnorth, and preparing for these is a key part of owning a working farm or lifestyle block. It’s a good time to think about removing trees that could topple in strong winds this year, for example — they could be hewn up into handy extra firewood. Or perhaps it’s time to invest in that generator in case the power goes out? Handy lithium-ion power packs are also new to the market, ensuring not only a jump start for vehicles, but also a power source for laptops and phones during a power cut. Speaking of vehicles, this time of year is the true test of a machine’s stamina.

Mud, bad roads and rain all take their toll, so a check-up before winter strikes is a great idea. Things like tyres, wiper blades, batteries and window demisters seem minor, but if they fail when the going gets tough it could ruin more than your day. For the truly prepared, it’s a good idea to take stock of the tools in your shed and ensure that everything required for quick maintenance or repairs is on hand. That number ten socket could be the difference between a good day’s work and a frustrating drive into town in the rain. When the frosts, storms and torrents come, there’s no better feeling than having a warm, dry ‘castle’ of a homestead to come back to after a day on the land. Make a checklist now and sort out what you need for the coming season — including an approved civil defence kit just in case. 

The 10-year-old has proved himself recently in Tauranga coming third place in the special plastic slalom boat competition against adult competitors and at the Bay of Plenty Slalom Champs where he beat five under-14-year-olds with his time. “Gage is four years off high school and is the youngest competitor because of his ability on the water. NZ Canoe Slalom had reservations about letting him compete at this event but Gage has proven he can be competitive at this level,” said his father Lee. AUTO AND MARINE

Return of a smart investment  by Andy Bryenton

This year’s Northland Field Days saw a fleet of new options for farmers looking to update or upgrade their utility truck, from the luxurious to the tough and dependable. Amid this surge in popularity for the classic ute as a vehicle that does it all — from the high street to the back paddock — a new offering from Mahindra stands out for utility and value. The Genio has proven extremely popular in its home market on the Indian subcontinent, where Mahindra is the biggest name in diesel power. In fact, the brand is all but ubiquitous on Indian roads — and on the trails which serve as roads in the hinterland. With a testbed as tough as this, it’s no surprise that the Genio is built tough, able to handle hard knocks, which the average Kiwi environment rarely serves up. The real surprise is the sheer value for money represented by the upgraded, facelifted second generation of this multi-purpose truck — an area in which the Genio punches well above its weight. Here’s an example — despite having the requisite modern car-like handling, and a turning circle just a touch over 6 metres, the Genio can be fitted with a huge 2.7-metre deck, packing the ability to lug more than 1,200 kilograms. Under the hood there’s no compromise on power, with a thoroughly modern 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine providing 280Nm of torque. With a Bosch common-rail system designed in Germany and a chain drive setup to reduce vibration and noise, this is a power plant that stands proudly among its rivals as quiet and competent. The biggest news is aesthetic in this new iteration, though. A bold new design

adds visual appeal, while the cabin is well appointed with comfortable seats, handy storage solutions and charging points for all your modern devices. Once again, the Genio has the hallmarks of sturdy build quality, engineered to handle the demanding environments of the subcontinent, from the tropics to the Himalayas. What’s best of all, this compact but brawny little ute with its handy load capacity and smart road handling comes in around the $20,000 mark. That’s pause for thought in a sector where utes can top out at three times this figure.

BUSINESS ADVERTORIAL

A celebration of excellence The Dargaville Business Forum Incorporated is teaming up with the Northland Chamber of Commerce to encourage Kaipara entries in the Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards. This is a fantastic opportunity to promote local businesses in front of a wider audience while taking advantage of support to critically analyse and improve what they do. Celebrating 40 years this year, the Westpac Business Excellence Awards are open to all Northland businesses and are free to enter. Success here requires the owner to truly understand how their product or service is delivered to market, how they set their goals and aspirations and how they establish their core market and its needs. An entrant’s performance is rigorously tested against a number of key criteria, and how it measures up to that business’s vision and strategic plan. It’s all about excellent business leaders with excellent staff delivering excellent products and services to the local. An award focussed on achieving success through a deliberate plan of action based on the owner’s aspirations. More often than not this incorporates a high degree of innovation and passion — qualities which set these organisations apart from the rest. We believe there is no wrong time to enter the awards, as businesses are (or should be) constantly examining how they operate, monitoring their results and modifying their behaviour accordingly.

Many entrants comment that they are initially quite daunted by the entry form, but soon realise that much of what it contains is simply another way of expressing things they already do. The organisers are committed to making the process as easy as possible

for entrants, through individual support and group workshops. Of course, we wholeheartedly celebrate the vision and spirit of all entrants and winners. If you want to know more about how to enter, contact us at the Northland Chamber of Commerce.

The Paparoa Lions have hosted the 70th annual pioneer luncheon at the Paparoa Hall to honour both past and present seniors, with some coming from as far as Christchurch, “who have helped make Paparoa such a great place to live,” said luncheon coordinator, Pete Hames.

Mangawhai’s Peggy Purlers have been busy creating woolen delights and have recently donated their hard work to local Plunket.

“These are the people who built the sports facilities we now enjoy, who supported the schools and churches and who started clubs and support groups such as Lions and Plunket.” Several spot prizes were awarded, like one to acknowledge the most senior woman, Elva Heath, and the oldest man, Eric Wrigley, both in their 90s. Two past members of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, Ailsa Cullen and Ella Hames, cut the celebratory cake.
