Competition controls petrol costs u by Ann Morgan
Price variances at petrol pumps in Northland and the Kaipara region have been attributed to competition, and what the Automobile Association dubs ‘the Gull effect’.
Team finds touch success
A successful weekend away at the Junior National Touch Championships in Papakura …

“The areas with a Gull service station, will tend to have lower fuel prices because the company is a small fuel company with much lower overheads. Therefore they are able to offer fuel for much less,” says AA Petrolwatch spokesperson Mark Stockdale. “This forces the other brands in the direct area to compete or match their
price, giving the consumers in those areas discounts. This makes it look like the standard price is too high. “As an example, Dargaville is consistently priced with various other parts of Northland, like Kerikeri and other parts of the country where there are no Gull service stations.” At the time of writing, the price for 91 octane
at Caltex in Whangarei was $1.639 per litre, in Wellsford, $1.879 while in Dargaville it was $1.929. “It is the same as a fashion or grocery store competing with others, fuel is no different, it is simply another product where there is no set price,” Mr Stockdale adds. continued on page 6 …

Surprise candidate Field Days set a record stands for by-election u by Ann Morgan
u by Ayla Miller
In a surprise move, Mangawhai Resident and Ratepayers chairman, Bruce Rogan is a late runner to join NZ First’s Winston Peters, National’s Mark Osborne and Labour’s Willow Jean Prime in standing for the Northland seat vacated by former National MP Mike Sabin.
With a combination of hot weather and sizzling specials the turnout for the Northland Field Days on all three days was exceptional, according to president Lew Duggan.
p A record number of exhibitors were on show at the Northland Field Days
p Winston Peters with the future of farming. Cole and Jay Mason chatted with Mr Peters during the first day of his campaign for the Northland by-election at the Northland Field Days
Mr Rogan admits he has no hope of election, but says he hopes to encourage voters to demonstrate opposition to local government amalgamation proposals in candidates they support. Mr Peter’s launched his bid at the Northland Field Days. “I will bring to the Kaipara region, an experience of when it was a very successful economy and a series of thriving communities,” he said. “New Zealand First knows the kind of economic policies and regional development policies that are required, not just for the economy but also for education and health. “I hope to bring experience and knowledge of the system, I know where the likely roadblocks are and what I can do about them.”
Mr Peters said standing in the Northland by-election was not an easy decision but his concern for ‘Northland’s forgotten people’ was his motivator. Public servant Mark Osborne will stand for National. The father of two from Taipa, is an asset manager for Far North District Council, a former general manager of Te Ahu Charitable Trust, whilst also running a family-owned local business. “National’s focus on investment and growth helped to create 7,500 more jobs in Northland last year, which is currently one of the fastest-growing regions in the country.” Labour candidate Willow Jean Prime believes she can offer good work ethic and aims to tackle the big issues. ¢

“We had good steady crowds and a record number of exhibitors were present with more than 550 businesses and organisers setting up the event. “An estimated 25,000 people came through the gates with Saturday being the busiest and many people told me it had been a great family day out. “There have been some really good comments about the development we have made this year, including the new bathroom facilities.” Fonterra’s lower predicted payout did mean dairy farmers were more careful with their cheque books but exhibitors said there have been some good sales made with cars and tractors. “The field days generates a lot of income for Dargaville as Northland’s biggest event,
it keeps Dargaville on the national map and it is run by one paid employee and 30 enthusiastic volunteers,” says Lew. Competition was fierce with the quad skills, tractor pull, logging sports and sheep trials all receiving a good number of top flight entries and Gas and Tyre Services won the best site award. Organisers officially closed the Field Days on Saturday afternoon at 4.30pm and while Lew says the sun had taken its toll on both organisers and exhibitors, they were excited on what had been an incredibly positive experience. “This year was thrilling and we are looking forward to 2016, we have huge plans to make the event and the grounds even better,” says Lew. ¢

The historic Christ the King church building will be shifted two kilometres to a new site on Molesworth Drive on Monday, March 16 along with an old school building from Tara Road. “The school room will function as a place for students to experience what school would have been like in the building’s time and to process what they have learnt about in the museum,” says Jim. “Ken and Gail Brown have been restoring it and getting it back to how it used to be. “The historic village will bring more people to Mangawhai. This lead to the team competing in the semi-finals against Counties and Taranaki in the finals, winning 11–5. “The games weren’t just close they were winning by large scores. “They are such a humble bunch of kids. Despite them doing so well they weren’t bragging about it,” said Jeremy. “We all had a great time. I haven’t seen such good camaraderie in a team for a long time. They are very close and

The funding will assist with two community garden ventures and also help motivated families to start their own vegetable gardens at home. “This is a collaborative approach between Kumarani, Te Kopuru community garden, Nga Ripo and the Anglican Parish of the Northern Wairoa,” says project manager Jenny Huriwai. “The Te Kopuru garden is already well-established and is progressing under the guidance of Clara Tito and Noeline Donaldson. Our second garden
is being modelled on this and will be developed on land set aside by the Anglican Church. “The third phase will see Nga Ripo help up to 30 whanau who have a desire to become more self-sufficient. We are keen to hear from people who want to grow their own kai but need our assistance.” Annually, grants of up to $2,000 are available through the Mara Kai programme for community projects. tools, water tanks and time are also being sought. “Having Kumarani as the fundholder is a real asset, as many of the travellers who are involved with the community circus also have a lot of knowledge about permaculture and sustainable living. “As we prepare for winter gardens, we are keen to hear from others who can share their passion, ideas, and experience with us.” To register your interest or to find out more contact Jenny 09 439 1826. ¢

Network News Electricity upgrades continue There are a number of jobs that are being worked on to finish before the end of the financial year. Some you’ve probably already read about, such as the Dargaville feeder rehab that we’re already two months into; the Whakapara to Helena Bay 33kV replacement of poles, cross-arms and insulators; and re-jointing at the Refinery. We have started on the new subdivision within the Palms Lifestyle Estate laying underground cable and we are also undergrounding out at the Matapouri Park subdivision. You can’t miss all the roadworks going on along State Highway 1 (Western Hills Drive and Fourth Ave). NZTA has contracted us to underground all the overhead electricity and fibre. We will be working to NZTAs schedule in two stages. The first is undergrounding the eastern side. All of the service ducts are colour-coded, with power installed in orange ducts and fibre installed in red. Northpower would like to remind everyone to be safe on the roads, especially around the roadworks and underground cabling areas. Slow down near the works and be aware of what’s going on around you. There will be heavy machinery and workers in the area. Their main purpose will be to keep the construction site, themselves, motorists and pedestrians safe. So please be patient because once the job is done, you won’t even remember any of the disruption. If you need to be on time for something, leave a few minutes earlier to allow for the delays. Merge like a zip, and please – don’t run through amber and red lights. The rotation of lights from red to green is approximately 90 seconds, hardly worth causing an accident or worse. If you live within the Whangarei UFB area, then Northpower Fibre has FREE fibre install, up to 200 metres, to your home. Contact one of the retail service providers found on our website northpowerfibre.co.nz/partners for more information.

a new generation to the trade, with his employees Dustin and Shannon now ably assisting in the day to day running of a busy glass and fittings company. Dustin, who initially trained at agricultural college, has been with Window and Door Services for nearly a decade. Shannon has been with the team for five years, having previously worked in the complementary aluminium joinery trade. From an early focus primarily on broken windows, conservatory builds and renovations, the business has grown to encompass new technologies such as window tinting and accessories such as insect and security screens, locks, stays and fittings. It’s a varied trade which requires afterhours dedication, and a serious attitude toward security. To be an accredited glazier in New Zealand means passing a police check, ensuring that these tradesmen can be trusted implicitly with your home’s security. The latest innovation in Kevin and the team’s arsenal is known as Diamond Fusion, a coating which keeps glass looking brand new, despite being used in such places as shower doors and boat windshields. Autumn To build or renovate Look ahead to a warm winter Winter is on the way, despite summer temperatures outside. And the smart money this year is on planning ahead, so that renovations and additions are all installed and running right for the cold snap to come. This couldn’t be truer than it is in the case of fireplaces, which are once again a popular choice for the home. Ample firewood, cleaner burning technology, and the addition of a modern ‘wetback’ system make the allure of a fireplace about more than just interior design. At this year’s Field Days, local fireplace installers Plumbing and Heating were there to answer the public’s questions, and raised three very important points. Firstly, no matter which brand of fire you opt for, the process of approval through council will always take time. Allow for up to four weeks for consent to be handed down, only after which can work be undertaken to install. Secondly, consider how well your home will contain that heat. This time of year it’s a popular choice to sort out roofing issues, putting a stop to drips when the rain comes. At the same time, consider insulation top and bottom to seal in the heat, with the option of filling wall cavities

too. Warm woolen carpets underfoot are an evergreen favourite, and can’t be beat on a cold morning! Finally, look at how the different heating zones across your home interlock. Consider heat transfer from the fireplace to bedrooms to even out the temperature map, or add a heat pump to the mix for instant warmth or to boost the degrees in far-flung parts of the home. And if you already have a fireplace, make sure to give it a clean up before the cold weather comes. Not just for appearance’s sake — a chimney clean is a safety issue, preventing the risk of fire and is required by most insurance companies. ¢

Autumn To build or renovate Countdown to winter has begun u by Andy Bryenton
The beginning of March marks the end of summer, and though the weather remains balmy — with temperatures into the high 20s recorded at last week’s scorching hot Field Days — there’s a chill in the morning air which points to the change of seasons. Soon the rains of Autumn will be sure to fall, and hard on their heels will be the cold days of winter. Which is as inevitable as the sunrise, of course — but which puts a time-clock on building and renovation work aiming toward the establishment of a warm and
comfortable home. Certain construction and repair jobs are simply better considered when there are guaranteed long periods of hot sunny weather — and long hours in the day thanks to daylight savings. Roofing, especially, comes to mind as a prime example, as a thundery

squall can really put the dampeners on work with the sheet-metal off! Late summer roofing work is also a great time to consider the state of your in-ceiling insulation. With the roof removed, it’s a snap to roll out those batts and fill every corner. It’s also a good time to think about leaks — with minimal rain, a tiny drip can seem like no great problem. But when the inundation of the winter months comes, you’ll be glad you called your roofer or glazier to put things right. Gaps and draughts from under the house can be filled with underfloor insulation now to prevent chilly feet and ineffective heating in the colder months. Perhaps the biggest home project which weighs on people’s minds at this time of year is the question of heating — in fact, we’ve dedicated an article in this section solely to looking ahead to your 2015 heating strategy. But bear in mind that a heat source — no matter how efficient — is only as good as the other two elements which make up a

healthy living environment. In summer it’s easy to achieve ventilation, another vital factor, by living with doors and windows open. Come Winter, good extractor fans for bathrooms, or even a ceiling mounted positive pressure full-home system can drive out moisture, making heating more effective. Insulation completes the picture, sealing in the warm, dry conditions which promote better health and better living. ¢

A passion for A year of giving automotive performance u by Andy Bryenton
Local Kaipara mechanic and self-avowed petrolhead Sam Talijancich has been fascinated with the potential of internal combustion for as long as he can remember.
p Sam Talijancich brings his skill and passion for all things automotive to Area 51’s workshop
With hands-on experience under the hood from the age of 15, Sam turned his attention to the powerful imported Japanese cars which were taking the world by storm at the time, with the focus of achieving more power, more speed, and better performance. The result was a series of formidable RB powered Nissans, packing the legendary Godzilla variant of the marque’s big turbocharged six. Just as the cars named for the ferocious movie monster stomped all over Mount Panorama, so too did they make their mark on the Kiwi drag racing scene. Sam was there, taking home trophies as the cars he put together cleared the quarter mile at white-knuckle speeds. All of this was achieved by many long hours under the hood. And the skills learned there have transferred over to the benefit of Dargaville locals, with Sam’s Area 51 workshop just outside of town garnering a clientele of those in the know. It’s not just fire-breathing performance mods, either — everything from basic servicing through to full
engine transplants are available at the hands of this award-winning driver and mechanic. Sam’s new passion is for off-roaders — and as you might expect, his nocompromise approach has carried over from his drag racing days. Not satisfied with second best, Sam has sourced a complete range of upgrades which he now brings to the public, from tough bull bars to powerful winches, spotlights and more. Mounted to the front of the trusty Toyota in his forecourt, the full suite looks about ready to conquer any terrain! The Area 51 name might be familiar to UFO enthusiasts, but Sam’s workshop is far from top secret. And the advanced technology he is able to source and deploy is definitely from planet Earth. He invites those who share his enthusiasm for maximum performance — at a good price — to give him a call and talk about their forthcoming project. Whether for speed, safety, thrills or practicality, the possibilities are endless. ¢
p Another month, another lucky winner with a hamper full of groceries thanks to Dargaville Diesel Specialists. Rodney’s generous giveaways have become a regular feature here in Dargaville, and now, a year after the popular draw began, Dargaville Diesel’s chief mechanic and manager reckons the total prize value must be in excess of $2,000. Congratulations to all 2014’s winners!
