Minister launches Matakohe bridges project  by Paul Campbell

Work on replacing the one-lane Hardies and Anderson bridges on State Highway 12 at Matakohe has officially begun with the sod-turning ceremony headed by Transport and Economic Development Minister, Simon Bridges. The event last Friday marked the end of a long local campaign over the section of road that has been responsible for numerous accidents and a bottleneck into Kaipara for traffic and freight. “The bridges will be replaced with two-way structures as well as realigning

Swimming coach sought  by Ann Morgan

The Dargaville Special Olympics team are in need of a swimming coach and volunteers to help the athletes achieve their goal of competing in the upcoming Nationals in Wellington this November.

 The Dargaville Special Olympics team at a ribbon day event in Whangarei

“Our swimming coach left at the end of last year and this has left a gap. If someone could help us it would be very much appreciated as some of our team have shown great interest in competing in the swimming events at Nationals,” said coordinator Ros Gilmour. The group also needs volunteers to help with training, transport and managing the team. They also participate in athletics and football, and attend ‘Ribbon Days’ and other events competing throughout Northland and Auckland. “It is great for their health and wellbeing. It gives them incentive and they learn so much. It is very rewarding for

the volunteers and the athletes alike. It is great seeing them accomplish their goals. It can take longer for them to achieve something and they are very proud of themselves when they do,” said Ros. “We really need a swimming coach and more volunteers on board as our Special Olympics team will not be able to join in the Nationals at the end of the year without the extra help.” The team trains at the Dargaville High School pool on Thursdays from 4.30– 5.30pm. If you are able to help or for more information call Ros Gilmour on 09 439 8133 extension 3. 

Traction engine rides at sports day  by Joanna Manson

The historic Donnelly’s Crossing Picnic Sports Day is back for another day of fun-filled games and rides on March 11.

Beauty for everyone  by Anna Harding

‘Beautee by Stacy Lee’ is a new Dargaville business owned and run by Stacy Griffiths with the help of her sister Lucy. Both sisters grew up on a dairy farm in Aranga and Stacy’s passion for beauty came from her mother.

 Participants from last year’s picnic sports day at Donnelly’s Crossing get ready to race

The sports and picnic day has been as much a part of the town’s history as its sawmilling and railway past. In 1935 local farmers donated the land where the event takes place and back then they levelled out the surface with horse scoops. Still embracing the ‘old-fashioned fun’ which has continued over the years, the day will feature threelegged races, gumboot throwing and grandparent races. Aranga School will be catering for the thirsty race participants and hungry spectators.

Although it is no longer possible to arrive by train to Donnelly’s Crossing, organiser for the last 20 years, Michelle Cob was excited to introduce a new ride to the day. “It’s a steam traction engine coming up from Auckland for the day so all the children can ride in trailers behind it. We are looking forward to a great day with all our enthusiastic newcomers in the area,” she said. The sports and picnic day will start at 10.30am at the Donnelly’s Sports Ground and will be well signposted. 

 Beauty therapist Lucy Griffiths in her sister’s salon on Victoria Street in Dargaville

She loves “the creative side of beauty therapy and helping people feel better. It’s the small things that can make you feel happy.” Stacy is thinking of doing pensioner specials, going to rest homes, and offering special packages to people like teachers, as well as keeping her prices low to make her service accessible to everyone. “We are figuring out how to give back to the community, in whatever way that may be.” Stacy trained at the International College of Camille in Auckland as a beauty and advanced skin specialist. Since then she has also gained qualifications in microblading therapy,

which she has a special skill and interest in. She has worked in salons in New Zealand and Europe and has been part of the industry for almost nine years. With her first child on the way, Stacy and her partner decided to move up to Dargaville to settle. The business came about after talking to a hairdresser friend from Halo who mentioned an unused back room. Also Stacy felt it was time to do her own thing and “create what I want in a salon as opposed to what somebody else wants. “I’d never go and do anything else. I’d just move to a different pocket of beauty therapy. There’s never a time when I’ve thought I don’t enjoy what I do.” 

Getting ready for work

Reclaiming an iconic garden

 by Anna Harding

 by Joanna Manson

Young adults in Kaipara can now take part in a four week preemployment, work ready course, being held in Te Kopuru.

More than 800 hours of voluntary labour and the help of a $6,000 grant have transformed the swamp garden in Dargaville’s Taha Awa Riverside Gardens.

 Keen course participants and helpers, in the yet to be landscaped back yard. From left: Annie Smith, Chenniele Kahui-Flavell holding Karaitiana Te Tuhi, Sarah Searle, Vanessa Phillips, Samantha Burr and Frances Nathan with granddaughter Nayla

 Before and after: Large amounts of sludge and rock were removed from the pond before members of the Dargaville Fire Brigade helped refill the pond in the revamp

The course officially called the “T500 Kode program” is run by Sarah Solutions, a workplace communication consultant business owned by Sarah Searle. Because of Sarah’s past experience in similar fields, Work and Income approached her to run the course. It is for 18–24 year olds and runs weekdays 9am–4.30pm from the old joinery factory on Norton street, which is being renovated. Twenty-three young adults have signed up for the first block, with some coming from as far as Kaihu and Maungaturoto. “We’ve got lots of young mothers who are all very capable,” says Sarah.

The swamp-to-harbour water feature hasn’t had any major maintenance until the Dargaville Gardens Trust decided to get busy. Trust chairperson, Lyn Trounson, said the area was “heavily weed infested and silted.” To begin the project members of the trust removed 10cm of compacted sludge and three tonnes of rock to enable tears in the lining to be fixed and a new concrete wall to be constructed. “Because of water restrictions, river water was used for most of this and the trust is extremely grateful to the Dargaville Fire Brigade which used a training night to add its pumps to our feeble efforts,” she said.

The course covers things like cooking, healthy lifestyles, fitness, work experience, communication skills, literacy, numeracy, resumes and interview skills.” Sarah plans to run the courses “as long as it takes.” She is passionate about “giving back and making a difference to people. And I love this community.” She runs a pick up service from Dargaville, but if someone is keen to come and having transport problems, Sarah is happy to negotiate and find a way to get them along. For more information contact Sarah at 027 316 8330 or sarahs. solutions@xtra.co.nz 

Volunteers spent time wading through the pond to collect goldfish before rehoming them back into the new and improved pond space. Unfortunately the project meant closing the gardens but since reopening, the trust has been pleased with the positive feedback it has received. While working on the pond, volunteers also dismantled the wall of the scented garden to half its height due to the discovery of potentially dangerous cracks. “On a positive note, the high-walled garden created a blind spot which was a regular target for vandals — this has now been eliminated and an attractive viewpoint has been created,” said Lyn. 

Everyone can help save water by using some of the following tips: • Minimal use of garden sprinklers and hoses • Avoid washing vehicles • Not filling swimming pools • Check that taps are not dripping. Now is also a timely reminder for residents on water tanks to check their tanks regularly and top up (anticipate demand and prepare in advance). Refer to our website www.kaipara.govt.nz and www.bewaterwise.org.nz for further information and tips on how to save water. Council would like to thank everyone to date for their continued effort.

Waka Ama team wins gold  by Anna Harding

The six women strong ‘Dargaville Wahine’ team have won their first gold medal at the recent Takapuna beach cup, a Waka Ama competition with New Zealand and overseas competitors. “We didn’t even know there were medals. It wasn’t until we got on to the beach, and they said ‘unofficially you just won your race, you could get a gold medal’. We were pretty stoked, we didn’t expect to win either so it was very cool,“ said team member Serena Carran. Helping our environment

Right now we are at the height of the elver transfer season at our century-old Wairua Hydro Power Station at Titoki, west of Whangarei. In the past five years we have worked with local hapu Te Parawhau Ki Korokota (and NIWA) to transfer more than 25 million elvers upstream of the Wairua Falls to other parts of the Wairua River and its many tributaries. Most of this work was done by the late George Tuhiwai and as a result of his efforts the programme is one of the most successful of its kind in New Zealand – an environmental project we can all be proud of. We have two elver capturing systems, one where elvers make their way up a pipe and into a holding tank and the other where they wiggle their way up an ‘elver ladder’ - a concrete ramp which we installed a few years ago – and into another holding tank.

Submitters should indicate if they wish to be heard in support of their submission.

Yvonne Tana, who has been a pottery artist for more than 20 years, is about to exhibit new work for the first time since she suffered a stroke in 2002.

The Kauri Coast Resthome and Hospital at 102 Hokianga Road, Dargaville is holding a community market day on Saturday March 11 from 9am–2pm.

Yvonne’s sculpture interest started when she was seven and playing with clay on the beach in Pouto where her family farmed. In high school her art teacher was leading Maori clay artist, Colleen Urlich. But it wasn’t until she was around the age of 25 that she started to take being an artist seriously. “In the late 1980s, after working in radio I came home to have my girl, and the Kokori trust in Te Kopuru was flourishing and I learnt pottery with Vanessa Welsh there. Old and new security know-how  by Andy Bryenton

Part of enjoying the lifestyle here in the Kaipara is knowing that your home and its contents are safe and secure. Crime may not be as prevalent in the countryside as in the urban jungle, but it pays to be safe — it’s always better to have unscrupulous thieves pass your home over as a ‘hard target’. There are two strands of security which work together to ensure peace of mind — and the approval of your insurance provider. Old-fashioned lock and key technology is unsurpassed as both a deterrent and as a means of front-line security, and can be extremely cost effective. Sometimes the sight of a chunky, bolt-cutter proof chain and padlock is enough to make thieves think twice, as is the fitment

of security screens and doors to deny easy access to the home while still allowing fresh air to circulate. Sheds, barns and outbuildings can even be set with a master key system, meaning that lifestyle blocks and farms stay secure without the need to lug around a key ring fit for a Victorian-era prison warden. Electronic security takes many forms, from hardwired and emplaced closedcircuit television cameras all the way  Burglars confess — visible security systems often make them bypass secure homes for an easier target

through to laser tripwires which can alert occupants to the arrival of strangers on the property. These advanced systems must be installed by someone with the correct credentials — needless to say, in the case of hardwired systems this means a qualified electrician who also has a certificate from the police force. But smaller, portable systems exist which can be installed by the lay person, and are even portable, perfect for boats, cabins and campervans. Recent news reports of thieves foiled by images sent direct to mobile devices while they are

in the act highlight the power of these cutting-edge technologies. Finally, there’s security of another kind — protection from fire. Not only is it a legal requirement to fit smoke alarms in modern homes and rental properties, it’s good sense as well. Small and unobtrusive modern alarms — and heat alarms for kitchen areas which are not confused by cooking vapours — make it easy to be forewarned of the threat of fire, saving lives and giving our hardworking firefighters a helping hand with an early warning. 

Keeping connected in the country  by Andy Bryenton

One of the prime motivators which has seen people move north to the Kaipara in recent times has been the allure of the outdoors — the great beaches, lakes, forests and opportunities to get amongst nature, which our part of the country offers. But at the same time, those technologies that bring the world to our doorsteps have advanced at a rapid pace. Now there’s no reason not to enjoy the best of both. This year opened with the news that $33 million worth of ultra-fast broadband is coming to the region and across the north, affecting the towns of Mangawhai Village, Mangawhai Heads, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Kaiwaka, Ruawai and Dargaville. This has an impact not just in terms of streaming entertainment content and online gaming, but also for more efficient business and video conferencing. More than one of our new local residents has been able to move away from the city and its grinding commute thanks to working remotely via computer, and this will only become more of an option. The move could also spur new businesses to establish here. For those in the rural hinterland, broadband was once an elusive dream — as was cellular reception. For the latter, booster systems now exist to multiply those precious bars, and for the former, rural broadband has become faster, more affordable and more accessible than ever thanks to the efforts of companies like Uber Networks, who bring news, weather, banking and entertainment — among other services — to thousands of farms across the north. Another strand of the information web is television —

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Eight decades of dedication Flooring has come a long way since the 1930s. Here in Dargaville, electricity was a new amenity for the community, and the age of the powered vacuum cleaner was yet to come. But the growing town needed a touch of class and warmth for those cold winter nights — and so ex-carpenter George Munn heeded the call. In late 1936 the son of the town’s postmaster, Mr Henry Munn, decided to venture into the interior design business. Purchasing an existing furniture store just across the street from the post office, he was all set up with fresh new stock by the start of 1937, including in his inventory a range of luxurious full-floor rugs. It was the start of an intergenerational flooring odyssey which, by conservative estimate, has seen the team at the Munn’s family business lay down more than 1.5 million square metres of carpet and vinyl over three generations and eight decades. From colonial villas to the art deco styles of the post-war years through to modern homes in the present day, the design and even the composition of flooring may have changed, but the skills needed to get it down right first time have remained the same. A keen eye

From the Past

 From humble beginnings — Munns Flooring Xtra evolved from the original furniture and flooring store of Mr George Munn

for measurement, a steady hand and no small amount of stamina are needed to turn rolls of heavy carpet and vinyl into a hard-wearing design statement in the home. Flooring is an often overlooked building trade, as we walk all over the finished product daily, but it’s one that requires a full apprenticeship to master. Munns are passing on that knowledge to a new generation through their apprenticeship programme. Today, eighty years on, Munns Flooring Xtra no longer deal in large Eastern-style

rugs — the need to take the carpet outdoors for a good beating in spring is long gone! Part of the nation-wide Flooring Xtra brand, they have access to a huge range of wool and synthetic carpets, soft underlays, designer patterned vinyls and hardwood flooring products from around the world. Present day owners Lorraine and Gerrard Munn are armed with all the knowledge needed to make any floor look fit for the future — knowledge gained through eight decades of service to Dargaville and beyond. 

Something for everyone at field days  by Andy Bryenton

With a little light rain beforehand and fine weather across all three days, this year’s Northland Field Days was well attended, especially on the closing Saturday when families took the opportunity to see the sights and take in all the new innovations on offer. It was certainly field days full of excitement for those who appreciate big horsepower — from the Carters Tyres V8 supercar and Dargaville Ford’s flagship GT Mustang down to more diminutive motors. The rise of e-bikes was apparent with multiple options on site to check out this new form of petrol-free transport, and elsewhere the electric revolution was making its presence felt, with battery-powered outdoor tools such as chainsaws and brush cutters garnering attention. The usual crop of powerful utes for the rural lifestyle were clearly to the fore — the fan favourite Ford Ranger was admirably represented by a matched set of special West Coast Edition examples from Dargaville Ford, while the Isuzu Dmax, SsangYong Actyon and the small but powerful Suzuki Jimny flat-deck all had a strong showing. Suzuki caught the eye with their tiny, retro-inspired Ignis ultra-compact SUV. The 1,200cc runabout boasts replaceable coloured panels and

fittings to change up its style. Farming equipment was of course a big focus for the serious farmer attending the field days — as well as for kids delighted to spot such massive machines. Mammoth tractors from the likes of Case IH and Deutz Fahr showed off the cutting edge of agricultural tech, incorporating advanced computer controlled systems and highly fuel efficient, emissions-reducing engines. Lifestyle block owners were also clearly in attendance, with a keen interest taken in large ride-on mowers for those five- to six-acre sections. All in all, 2017 was a well-attended field days with a changing demographic reflecting the status of the Kaipara as a lifestyle and retirement destination as well as a powerhouse of farming. Now the real work begins, as exhibitors follow up their leads and deliver brand new machinery. 

Teen off to world champs  by Joanna Manson

Ambassador encourages students

At the tender age of 13, Mangawhai local Tarrin Rous is proving he’s already on top of New Zealand golf. Tarrin’s enthusiasm for the sport began when his older brother gave him some plastic clubs back when he was just a toddler. Then at six years old Tarrin joined the Mangawhai Golf Club as a junior member and hasn’t looked back since. His biggest supporter is mum Diane Rous who says she was very proud of her son’s achievements. “In the last couple of years he has represented Northland at provincial level for the Northland Under 16 team and was a winner of the Kaipara Sports Award in golf.” His most recent golfing venture saw him compete in the US Kids Golf Auckland Tour competing in the 13-14-year-old division and finishing on top. The tour consisted of eight events which took place before Christmas last year and throughout January on various Auckland golf courses. The win means Tarrin has now qualified to enter the US Kids Golf World Championship event which is held at Pinehurst USA in late July. It also means he has qualified to compete in the Australia US Kids Golf Tour in May. Now the focus for Diane and Tarrin is raising enough money to get him to

Hard work, focus and enjoyment were the key messages Tangowahine School students heard from New Zealand Olympic Ambassador and current Black Stick Stacey Michelsen recently.

Stacey grew up in Northland and spoke to the students about her experience at the Rio Olympic Games and her accomplishments as a New Zealand Black Stick team member and what it means to represent your country. “The children asked Stacey some tough questions and received some great advice from  Tangowahine students with New Zealand Olympic Ambassador and Black Stick Stacey Michelson her,” said principal Wayne Steele. she enjoys visiting country schools and Mr Steele says having the being able to encourage them, and she opportunity of world class sports appreciates how welcoming and friendly people interact with the students the schools are. is invaluable. “The take-home message from the “Having people of champion level visit was all about living the Olympic speak with our children inspires them ‘Values of Excellence’ — Respect, and and gives them something to strive Friendship, which fits in well with the for in the future. the United States so he can pay on a world stage. “We have started fundraising and we have been overwhelmed by the support from members of the Mangawhai Golf Club. I think they are just so proud of him as we are,” said Diane. If you would also like to help Tarrin represent NZ, he has started a ‘Give A Little’ page and would appreciate any support. 
