The gold adds to another gold and a silver and bronze in just over two years of competition. Emma was born and bred in Dargaville. She rides in the stoker position, or rear seat of the tandem cycle with her seeing pilot Laura in the front. They met at a para-cycling talent ID camp at the start of 2013 and their coach paired them to compete together last year. “After completing my schooling I went on to university and got interested in cycling, so I moved to Cambridge in the Waikato to pursue the sport,” said

Emma. “I like to have goals and to aim for the top and I always want to be the best I can.” “We have just returned from the Netherlands and the Track World Championships and achieved gold for the 3000 metre pursuit, defending our position from last year where we broke the world record for the same event by eight seconds,” she said. “It’s satisfying to win. All your hard training pays off. “It is good to back things up and it means you are keeping on top of your game and moving forward.
It’s easy to get complacent and we won’t allow ourselves to do that.” says Emma. “I miss Dargaville and I visit as often as I can. “My move to Cambridge gives me access to the velodrome to practice and the best thing is there are so many cyclists and individual riders who are very supportive and will ride with me.” “Getting into the sport is self funded and I have a few supporters, but as you get results on the world stage you start getting help. Balance Sport Nutrition and Reiker Cycles now sponsor me which has been a great help too.”

Ron McGowan, Bill Webb and Ron Nicholas were part of a group of the older generation from Arapohue who enjoyed a special evening to reminisce about days gone by and the antics they got up to. “I thought it would be nice to celebrate life with some of the older folk in the area that I grew up around when I was a young boy. The men used to take me duck shooting 50 years ago. It was a great to honour them with a special dinner and see them all have fun,” said organiser Alan Breckon.

Volunteering in Vanuatu

Back in 1965 Keven and Patricia Godfrey became husband and wife at the Gospel Hall in Dargaville surrounded by their friends and family. Fifty years later the complete bridal party were able to join the couple to celebrate 50 years of marriage and recreate their wedding photo.
Dargaville High School gateway coordinator Claudia GuthrieOehlinger, is spreading her wings in the direction of Vanuatu to take up a role as a literacy advisor with Volunteer Service Abroad.
Errol Godfrey, Dave Webb, Don Young, Keven Godfrey, Patricia Godfrey, Jocelyn Dixon, Rosemary Nicol and Alison Robertson stand in the same sequence as the Godfrey’s wedding photo 50 years earlier
Their story begins on Parore Street, Dargaville. It was on this street the couple first met and went on to live for 46 years. “I used to live in Te Kopuru but worked in Dargaville and would have my dinner at my Aunty Marj’s. It was like my second home. Keven and his family moved in next door and that is when we first got to know each other,” said Patricia. They were married three years after meeting and went on to have four children Brian, Derek, Jason and Rachel and who gave them 13 grandchildren. In 1964 Keven purchased a 1929 Model A Ford and restored it just in time for their honeymoon which they took to the Waikato, driving about 1770 kilometres. “It was the first time I had taken it that far,” said Keven. “I was hoping it wouldn’t give up on me.” The car also transported the couple to their anniversary celebration at the

Church of the Nazarene where they were welcomed by more than 60 family and friends. “We had hoped we would be able to recreate our wedding photo and it all worked out. Everyone was able to make it,” said Patricia. As for the secret to their long and happy marriage the couple agree it is the seriousness with which they took their vows, and their love, tolerance and respect for one another that has kept them together all these years.

She will be based in the Santo region for two years which has a population of around 40,000 people and escaped the worst of Cyclone Pam. “It is something I always wanted to do and now the time is right. I like sharing my skills and helping people to make their lives better,” she says. It will be her first long term volunteer assignment after a few short ones when she was younger. She feels this one will make a bigger difference, as the community will gain lifelong skills. Claudia’s work will ensure women have access to health advice regarding non-communicable diseases and improve their opportunities to earn an income. “I’m excited about getting to know the local community and living alongside them. I’m also looking forward to the simplicity of life.” As a volunteer, VSA pays for Claudia’s flights and accommodation,

The debate over a new national flag will be taken up at the next meeting of Grey Power in Dargaville at 1pm on May 15. The meeting programme states that Grey Power take lead on the national flag issue, and invites a public discussion. “We have two National Anthems and two official languages so why not have two national flags. The present flag can be kept for all time to come and be incorporated in legislation to be used only by the national services at their ceremonies and official occasions. “Let’s have the proposed new flags as selected by a panel, one of which will eventually be selected by a referendum with a second national flag to be used on all other non-military occasions. Come to the meeting and tell Grey Power your thoughts.”

Currently they use their private cars to travel to meetings as part of their community work. The wardens patrol the streets and assist with community events. They also deal with truancy and travel regularly to Kaihu, Te Kopuru, Ruawai, Paparoa, Kaiwaka and Mangawhai. The non-profit organisation are into the first few weeks of their fundraising efforts for a 12 seater van and are holding Housie nights at the Yugoslav Hall from 7.30pm on Friday nights to help fund the much needed vehicle. “We really need a van, as recently we took a group of about 10 boys on a
trip to Turangi, Taupo and Rotorua and had to take four different vehicles,” says treasurer Erana Wihongi. The wardens must travel to meetings that are held all around the North Island, and a van will mean large groups can travel together with ease. Erana and her husband and coordinator Haki have been involved with the Maori Wardens for almost 31 years and say they enjoy helping youth and the community. The group will have a stall at the upcoming Matariki celebrations at Selwyn Park and encourage the community to come along to the Housie nights and show their support.

Showing support for Nepal by Ayla Miller

The Dargaville Club are holding a fundraising evening on Friday, May 15 at their clubrooms to support Nepal after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the country.
Dargaville Intermediate School students have been learning about sustainability and self sufficiency. In their horticulture class they have learnt the process of growing food starting with soil preparation and germinating the seeds right through to putting the food on the table.
Kyah Suckling, Alesha White and Tiana Searle selling excess plants as part of the project Dargaville Club secretary Bobbie Young and committee member Bev Stott welcome the community to join them at their fundraising function for Nepal quake victims
The evening will include finger food, pool and snooker with a happy hour between 4.30pm and 7pm and meals available. “We are a community club and we are concerned there are still New Zealanders missing,” says secretary Bobbie Young. “We want to invite local businesses and their staff to come along as guests of our members.
“It will be a friendly evening and is a chance for people to meet other businesses and see old friends. “People can come down and see what the club has to offer. We want to encourage the younger generation to get involved.” A courtesy bus will be available for the end of the night and entry is by a gold coin donation which will go towards Nepal’s earthquake victims.
They are growing their own garden at the school under the guidance of Diane Papworth and Dennis Hewetson. “We also make our own compost from food scraps which goes back into the garden,” said Ms Papworth. “Over the years the school has participated in a lot of planting in the community including shelter belts, riparian planting and sand dune restoration out at Bayly’s Beach. These activities teach the pupils the importance of caring for the environment for future generations.
“Teaching the students to become environmentally aware is important to encourage sustainability and self sufficiency for the future.” The school also have an extensive recycling programme, shredding newspapers and making firebricks. They also have a wide variety of native riparian plants available for sale. They were awarded a silver in the Northland Regional Council’s Enviro School Award last year for their efforts.

Otamatea’s rising talent
Opportunities for the arts by Ann Morgan
Inspired by singer Yulia’s support for local talent earlier this year, the idea of musicians and artists having a venue to gather monthly to perform and exchange ideas was ignited.
The Kaiwaka Open Mic Nights will be an evening for everyone to share their experience and talents on stage
Molly Curnow impressed the judges singing her haunting rendition of Lisa William’s ‘Pirouette’ at Otamatea High School’s annual talent contest. This year Ryan ‘Captain Fonk’ Monga from the band Ardijah, Harry Poi — formerly Ardijah, and Pauline Corlett from the band ‘The Boss’ were the judges, with former Split
Enz drummer Paul Crowther as sound technician. “Jasmine Sampson won the contest for the second year in a row, which has never happened in the history of this contest,” said Barry Corlett, teacher in charge of music. “Tasha Perrett came second and third place went to Micaela Tornquist.”
David McCarthy from Skylark Studio’s with Andrea Clarke and Lee Cooper from Landslide Show NZ have decided to start a monthly open mic night in Kaiwaka, encouraging local performers to come together. “We have amazing talent in the Kaipara area, including professionals who have moved north to get away from the city life. “There is a lot of experience to share,” said David who has 25 years in the recording and production industry. The plan is to have special guests, invite schools to perform and to develop talent, providing opportunities to experience the thrill of live performance. “The Kaiwaka Sports Complex has
kindly been made available and we are hoping that this venue will add to the community feeling that we are hoping to promote,” said Andrea. “The nights will be open to all types of performers, including dancers, poets, singers and musicians.” Children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult. Entrance is free and registration is encouraged. The first night will be held on Sunday, May 24 at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex from 6-9pm. Those interested can email David or Andrea at KaiwakaOpenMic@gmail. com for more information, also check out their facebook page Kaiwaka Open Mic.

Mayday for Coast Guard
Reviving hockey

With the annual Mayday Coast Guard appeal underway it is also a time to remember those volunteers who have kept the service going in the Kaipara and by giving to the appeal, you give to them.
Members of the Northern Wairoa Western Sharks hockey team are bringing new life to the sport in the Kaipara by forming a mixed junior team called the Fun Sticks.
Ruawai resident Gordon Murray is 94-years-old and is the vice president of the North Kaipara Coast Guard. He is one of the originators who started the Coast Guard off in 1993. “I have enjoyed my years helping on the water. We have a great group of people to work with. It is a good way to keep fit and make friends.” The adult hockey teams ages range from 15-years-old to late 50’s. “It is never too late to start,” says Bev. The division one team is currently looking for sponsors. “Sponsors would be associated with a team of ladies that are very passionate about the game,” says Paula. Fun Sticks training will be held at Dargaville High School on Wednesdays at 3.30pm. For more information contact Bev Hart on 09 439 8531.
The enthusiastic team want to encourage younger players to get involved and founding member Bev Hart says anyone aged between five and 12-years-old is welcome to come along to training regardless of their experience. “New members can start from scratch and hockey sticks can be provided.” The all-women Sharks team are now under the umbrella of the Dargaville Rugby and Sports Club and are looking for more players to form a second division. A big little op shop A dedicated group of Maungaturoto residents have built a business that has poured tens of thousands of dollars into charities ranging from overseas disaster relief, to the Northland rescue helicopters and to local families in need of food in the cupboard. They can be found at the town’s opportunity shop, un Hurndall Street, which is now run by a charitable trust. “We started out in 1986 as an Anglican Church op shop,” said spokesperson, Marge Paton. “Then in November of 2013 it was agreed by all to set up a separate entity and we became the Maungaturoto Opportunity Shop Charitable Trust 2013. “Last year we gave out $20,000. Half went to support groups who help people in need of food and emergency aid in our community. We also supported local youth training and activities as well as local community projects. “Nor thland organisations we helped were Hospice and the rescue helicopters as they also help people in our community.
“We also donated to world aid agencies for disaster relief. “Our end of season clothes and some children’s books again went to Vanuatu through the Kiwanis Club of Papakura and this help was needed more than ever this year after the cyclone.” The op shop is run by nine regular volunteers and some on standby who last year worked approximately 2,000 hours. “And this of course doesn’t include those who spend time at home doing washing and mending,” said Mrs Paton. “A huge thanks must go to the public who donate good quality clean and tidy articles for sale.” The op shop is open on Mondays from 10 – 1pm, and Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 – 3pm.

TEAMS A new force in Kaipara plumbing
“The whole team at Grant’s Gas & Plumbing are dedicated to top class service” Plumbing is what Grant Low and his team do best - but then again, roofing, heating, pumps and radiator repairs are what they do best as well! With a whole tool kit of relevant skills, the driving force behind Dargaville’s newest trades hub is versatility, along with a commitment to old fashioned service at a fair price. That means a varied day’s work for the Grant’s Gas and Plumbing crew, who have the experience and qualifications to undertake all kinds of repairs and upgrades on the home or farm. From installing a new gas califont water heater to mending a dripping roof, through to taking care of a complete rebuild of that dated old bathroom, these folks are able to do it all. A strategic partnership with local ‘Jack of All’ pump specialist Todd means that as well as gasfitting, plumbing, roofing and fireplace installation, Grant and his team are also the new local authority on pumps, for any application around the farm or homestead. And, with all kinds of jobs on the go since their opening day in February, this is one top team who are never likely to be idle! Call them today about preparing your home for the coming cold snap, or about more efficient irrigation & effluent systems for dairying.

DARGAVILLE’S home of honda horsepower
PROUDLY SERVING DARGAVILLE FOR 77 YEARS
There's a reason why Honda's big range of off-road power machines top the charts each year. Part of it comes down to the meticulous engineering and solid reputation of the company which powers a huge slice of rural New Zealand. But the rest is all about the superb support provided by regional Honda centres, like our own Dargaville Honda.
Munns Flooring Xtra has literally given a lifetime of service to the homes and businesses of the Kaipara. Edging over the traditional three score and ten by a healthy margin, Dargaville's top flooring team carry on a multi-generational commitment to service and knowledge.
The range - from exciting CRF motocross bikes to practical Pioneer side-by-sides - keeps new buyers coming through the door. But it's the whole team here at Dargaville Honda who have ensured a level of brand loyalty not often seen in the motor trade. Local farmers swear by the big red machines, in no small part because they know that a modern workshop crewed by dedicated technicians stands behind them all the way.
Because it's about so much more than just choosing a pleasing colour of carpet, the whole team are armed with an in-depth understanding of their industry. Good advice sets the groundwork for a professional finish, and it all comes together to provide a stress-free experience for those looking to add value, warmth and comfort to their biggest asset, their home.
Dargaville Honda also supports the local motorsport scene, with a wide range of equipment and long-standing support for trail rides, MX competitions and, of course, those who just ride for fun. In a time when work-life balance is big news, the dual emphasis here on hard-working farm machines and sporting bikes is a perfect example of how it's done!
With a history stretching back to the 1930s and a future being built on the skill of a new generation, Munns are proud to carry on the family name, allying it to that of the nationwide reach and buying power of the Flooring Xtra group. It's a match which fits these top tradespeople well, as they, like their parent company's slogan says, are 'vocal about being local!'

They really do brighten up the streets. “People can collect wool from us and return their knitted items to be added.” Those wanting to join in the project by either teaching others or learning to knit are invited to attend a meeting at the CMA building in Tirarau St, on Sunday, May 24 from 1-4pm. Dianne Fowlie, from Greenways Trust, applied for a grant to purchase acrylic wool for a community project through Creative Communities, and secured funding to teach people the craft of knitting. “It is great to be given the opportunity to introduce others to knit as it is becoming a popular past time again, and it gives people a break from technology, especially the younger generation,” says Dianne. “The concept is to decorate trees for winter. Pieces of knitting get added to a tree and sewn together like a jumper. They are very colourful creations such as flowers and there is no plan. Whatever people create becomes

Flying a new flag for farmers by Andy Bryenton
It’s been a landmark few years for the Can Am brand in New Zealand, with a range of powerful models winning critical acclaim in the hotly contested ATV and UTV sectors. Kiwi farmers demand more than ever from their working machines, and the winning combination of durability and power offered by the BRP range, in their distinctive yellow and black livery, has seen some big expansion and recognition for this North American company. Now that same black and yellow banner is set to be raised in a new location, as Randell’s Motorcycles sign up to carry the Can Am range in Dargaville. The experienced team at this long-established workshop already have a good relationship with local farmers thanks to their supply and maintenance of Suzuki’s big red quads and yellow MX bikes, so the move to expand into Can Am was a natural choice. The timing could not have been better, either from Can Am themselves, the

Randell’s team, or the off-road driving public. Can Am are ready to weigh into the forthcoming Fieldays® with a new crop of machines for farmers, expanding on the success of their Commander side-by-sides and Outlander quads. Fresh innovations such as the terraindevouring six wheel drive variant of the Outlander, and the feature-packed Commander XT will be there to impress the crowds at Mystery Creek, and they’ll be on the shop floor in central Dargaville too. Can Am have embarked on a full training program to arm the seasoned technicians at Randell’s with literal ‘inside out’ knowledge of their Rotax v-twins and everything under the hood of the black and yellow fleet. We caught up with Nigel and his team

WE’RE MOVING THIS MAY!
Power and precision by Andy Bryenton
It’s all very well to demand more power from your mowing technology — whether to drive the wheels or the cutting deck. But far more important is getting that power down to the ground and down to the lawn, providing the perfect cut first time without recourse to secondary tools like line trimmers and push mowers for those hard-to-reach spots. To this end, outdoor power equipment masterminds Husqvarna have taken the concept of the ride-on mower and given it a literal twist — in the middle. Taking their cue from powerful excavators and farm machines, their new Rider series pivots at the waist, with the rear wheels turning in tight to almost right angles. That means that the machines which make up this range — from the nimble little R120c all the way up to the four-wheel-drive R322t — can nip around trees and edged gardens with amazing flexibility. It also means that a new approach has been adopted to the cutting decks — which range from 94cm wide up to a heavy-duty 122cm. Gentlemen readers will understand the dynamics of a dualsprung three-bladed electric razor, and a similar system has been used to attach the deck to the R series, allowing it to glide over bumps and slopes. Flotation castors and rollers mean that the deck never knifes into the turf, even coming down a steep incline onto the flat. Another benefit of the new layout is rider comfort and stability. With a big Enduro Series motor in the back, developed jointly with Briggs and Stratton, the centre of gravity is kept low, right over the pivoting wheels. This leaves a clear view out front over the deck, with no ‘nose’ obscuring

the cut. The lack of a forward mounted engine also means a more ergonomic seating arrangement, with controls right at hand, along with the obligatory cup holder! The smaller models in the range make short work of big lawns, but special mention should go to the R322’s four wheel drive system and power steering, allowing a precise cut on hilly terrain without even a hint of ‘sledging’ or slipping in the wet. All models are available now from your local Husqvarna dealership.

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.
Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This
is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.
