p It was a basket full of delight for the winners of our Easter Hamper Draw. Shayla from Te Kopuru found all of our colourful Easter eggs around town during late March and early April, emailing the correct locations to win the draw. Gifts from a considerable list of Dargaville retailers filled out a prize pool too big to fit in one basket and topped off with a huge life-sized easter bunny made of chocolate. Thank you to all the sponsors, and congratulations to the winner and her family!

Books go back on shelves u by Paul Campbell
After a year spent in storage containers, while the building, which also houses the town’s new medical centre was extensively renovated to comply with its new role, the books are going back on the shelves at the Paparoa Community Library.
p Medical Centre visitors get a library preview
The revamped library will occupy new space in the former Otamatea council premises on the eastern end of the village and new librarian Jas Futter is looking forward to providing “a new and vibrant space. It is a new role for me but with huge help from Dargaville Library’s Lisa Salter and Simie Simpson we are nearing an opening date soon.” A major task was moving “boxes and boxes of books” together with shelving and furniture out of storage and Jas says volunteers from the general community, Paparoa Lions and the rural fire force put in a calculated 235 hours of work. “We are creating a new livelier and lighter space to enjoy, instead of what was formerly a rather uninviting place. We have got rid of many older books and will have a fabulous new
children’s book area too.” Another innovation planned is for an outward facing section to show the books by the cover, rather and just the spine and the library plans to seek book reviews, possibly adding a Facebook page precis for other readers to make a selection by. There will also be a rental service for the latest fiction titles and a large print display. “Facebook and our website will contain more information about library events, and we will provide texting and email service.” The library also needs people. “We would welcome any more volunteers with time to spare to assist with roles such as book exchanges, book displays and general maintenance. Training is now being provided, and we will advise an opening date soon.” ¢

Competitive quilting craft Tip campaign backs new recycling initiative u by Andy Bryenton
As the Dargaville Gems quilting exhibition launched last Friday at Dargaville’s Muddy Waters Gallery, there was even more quilting artistry on display just around the corner.
u by Paul Campbell
A new government plan to attack New Zealand waste mountain has been welcomed by Kaipara’s Fight the Tip campaign, which is battling against a landfill for Auckland rubbish that poses a pollution threat to Kaipara Harbour.
p Quilting club members rose to the challenge, crafting these artistic designs, which will be donated to Plunket
Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre’s picture window was used to display the entrants in a competitive and fun quilting contest, matching needle, thread and creative wits between our local fabric artists. The ‘pass it on’ style challenge saw quilters each complete one section of a finished piece, with a theme based on its colourful backing material. One quilter completed the centre, another the frame and the third the outer border. The entire process took six
months, and the club received a grant to purchase fabric for this exercise. Judge John Nielsen picked an overall winner with a meticulously crafted animal theme, but every entry is a work of art. All are on display at the Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre, counterpoint to the main exhibition, which is currently on show at the Muddy Waters Gallery. All quilts from this challenge will be handed over to Plunket to give away to families in need. ¢
Associate Environment minister, Eugenie Sage, announced last week the government is taking steps to improve kerbside and commercial recycling, reduce contamination of recyclables so more materials can be recovered, and increase onshore processing of plastics and other materials. It is the result of a task force set up last year to respond to a Chinese government ban on the import of many recycling materials. Fight the Tip is opposed to Waste Management, a Chinese-owned company, gaining Overseas Investment Office approval to buy 1,000 hectares in Dome Valley including a catchment for the Hoteo River running into the Kaipara. “It is great to see these government steps along with a round of funding to minimise waste,” said spokesperson Michaelle Carmichael. “Recent landfill disasters and the state of our environment really highlight the need to urgently change how we minimise and manage our waste. When you compare how some
other countries are dealing with waste, New Zealand appears to be sadly lagging behind. “The New Zealand Waste Strategy goals since 2010 are to reduce the harmful effects of waste, and improve the efficiency of resource use. In light of this, we were astounded that offshore owned Waste Management received approval to purchase land for another landfill. “We would think the government now has sufficient grounds and public support to reverse the OIO decision in order to protect our environment.” Eugenie Sage said “as a country we have been sending our waste issues offshore. China’s National Sword initiative has been a wake-up call that we need to deal with waste here in New Zealand, still one of the highest producers of household waste in the developed world, per capita. “This is despite waste being the second most pressing issue for New Zealanders according to research commissioned by the Ministry for the Environment. ¢

Public meeting planned A bridge evolution
5
u by Andy Bryenton
u by Paul Campbell and Liz Clark
Dargaville resident Graham Jones is planning a public meeting to pool ideas and put questions to the appropriate authorities regarding dog control enforcement in the Kaipara.
The Matakohe deviation of SH12, a multi-million dollar step ahead for Kaipara communication, is now open and it won‘t be long before the pioneering work of roading and bridge engineers of yesteryear is just a memory.
p Dargaville’s Graham Jones and his supporters are organising a town meeting to address dog control issues
After presenting a petition to council with 111 signatories, Mr Jones says that there are still people contravening the law and that the issue of roaming and aggressive dogs is now one of wide public concern. He and his supporters invite the wider public to attend a meeting on Monday, May 27, at the Lions Club hall on Hokianga Road, starting from 7pm. On the agenda; a forum for sharing ideas about ending the threat perceived to walkers and neighbourhood pets. Mr Jones, who was himself attacked by what he describes as ‘a pack of five hunting dogs’ this January in Dargaville,
plans to invite representatives of council to assist in addressing the public’s questions. Meanwhile, amendments to the dog control bylaws are underway, after a large number of submissions were received by the Kaipara District Council on the issues surrounding responsible dog ownership in the community. A report was presented to the councillors and mayor at a meeting on May 2. However, Mr Jones says that the forthcoming meeting is not primarily about changes to the bylaws; rather about enforcement to stop offenders who break them. ¢
It was a sense of relief for all concerned, including a bridge replacement campaign by local residents, when the New Zealand Transport Agency began work to replace; the two notorious one-way bridges and realign the road. Hardies Bridge was especially notorious. The single-lane crossing was made over creaking boards, rattling metal joists and a cracked and potholed roadway. However, back in the 1870s, the two bridges were a godsend when the road north to Ruawai and beyond was little more than a surveyor’s line and a rough bullock track. It took hours to get cattle and carts across and hope the tide didn’t come in too quickly. Tenders for a stone causeway were advertised by the local roads board in May 1873. Three years later a traveller took note of the causeway and suggested a bridge was very much needed: “It is the only break between the east and west coasts, there are no obstacles of an engineering character to contend against; therefore a bridge should be erected”. So in 1880, a wooden bridge was constructed by local sawmiller, Richard
p In March 2014 bridge campaigner Sue Reyland presented then Northland MP Mike Sabin with her petition calling for Matakohe’s one-way bridges to be replaced
Smith, a crossing that underwent several lots of repairs during many decades of service. Then in 1927, it was replaced by the present structure. Gwynn and Son constructed it for the Public Works Department: ‘… The bridge, which replaces an old and dangerous structure, is of concrete piers and abutments, rolled steel joists and hardwood superstructure…’ By summer 2019, the old creaking one-way bridge of ire was no longer in service. No more will drivers take a breath, hope the driver on the west side stops at the give way mark, and make the crossing over a veteran construction that will soon fade to memory. ¢

KAIPARA SPOTLIGHT DOG STOPS TRAFFIC Dogs wandering without any owner in sight are causing members of the public to be fearful. Council recently received a petition from 111 people residing in the Dargaville area regarding wandering dogs. The petitioners want Council to increase patrols, uplift all dogs they find wandering and fine their owners. Council General Manager Regulatory Planning and Policy Fran Mikulicic pleads with all dog owners to “Keep your dogs within your property unless accompanied by a responsible person“ She goes on to explain “Even lovely, placid dogs that roam from home can cause fear in people because residents don’t know if the dog is aggressive or not. All people young and old should be able to use public places without being fearful.” A comment was made during the Council meeting on 2nd May that dogs can’t read bylaws and signs. It was noted dog owners need to be educated about the impacts of wandering dogs and that it is against the Dog Control Act 1996 for dogs to be roaming free. Council have been running increased dog patrols in Dargaville over the last ten months Ms Mikulicic warns residents to keep their dogs on their property or under a responsible persons control at all times or they will risk a hefty fine, pound, and retrieval costs to fetch their dog from Whangarei. Council have been working with Armourguard, the Council contractors responsible for animal control, to ensure they respond in a timely fashion. Council are also using internal staff in the short term to patrol hotspot areas and we are investigating other ways to better educate dog owners. Ms. Mikulicic requests that all residents become the eyes and ears for Council, reporting sightings of wandering dogs via 0800 105 890 “Please provide as many details regarding the sighting such as the direction the dog was traveling in, where the dog normally resides, if known, and take photos if possible to help identify the dog. This will increase our ability to locate the animal and will aid in educating owners.” This issue is well known to Council staff and the governing body, after being discussed at the Council meeting in early May, and at a briefing on Thursday 09 May 2019. At the council meeting on 30 May 2019, recommendations regarding the long term management of dog control will be put to elected members. We understand everyone’s concerns and are working hard to alleviate them.

School CCTV foils burglary Teen driver pleads guilty A CCTV installation at Dargaville High School has proved a very wise move after it was instrumental in nabbing a burglar.

A 19-year-old man has pleaded guilty to drink-driving causing two deaths and injury to two others after a crash at Topuni in March. Aizaeah Kori-Lee Tarawa, appeared in the Whangarei District Court last week charged over the crash, which killed 20-year-old Janiah Fairburn and her two-year-old daughter Azarliyah and injured Henare Hadfield, 20, and their one-year-old son Te Tairawhiti. Tarawa, who was arrested by police in Auckland after the crash, pleaded guilty to driving with excess breath alcohol causing the two deaths and
the two injuries. It was the third time he had been convicted of drink-driving. A fifth charge, of failing to stop and ascertain injury without reasonable excuse, was still under discussion. Tarawa was still having medical treatment as a result of the crash. Judge Greg Davis directed that he be remanded in custody awaiting a case review on June 10 and sentencing on July 2.
Range firing p Dargaville High School principal Mathew Houghton and police constable Reuben Cohen
The school now has 33 CCTV cameras operating on-site, strategically placed in order for staff to monitor hotspots and movements both during and outside school hours, and they have also proven to be a positive step towards reducing vandalism and theft. “Within weeks of their installation, we had a break-in, and with the help of the cameras, the police were able to identify the person and are now dealing with this through the
courts,” said principal, Mike Houghton. “This has also provided protection for students and staff during school hours, giving them an added sense of security. “These cameras operate 24 hours a day and therefore provide the many community groups that use the facilities outside of school hours with added peace of mind and the confidence that their security and wellbeing are taken seriously.” ¢
The New Zealand Defence force is currently conducting a counterterrorism exercise with United States forces and warns that live firing will take place from time to time on the
NZDF weapons range off Kaipara South Head. A military spokesman warns that the prohibited range area should be regarded as operational at any time.

Top performance for dancers
Sworn in for justice

Dargaville High School performing arts students competed at the regional Showquest championships in Whangarei last week and placed third and took out the Props Award for their performance The Seven Stages of Grief.
Dargaville’s newest Justice of the Peace, Viv Biddles, was sworn in on April 5, in a ceremony, which has changed little since the first JPs were drafted in the late Middle Ages.
p Dargaville High School students performed The Seven Stages of Grief at the Showquest competition
Bream Bay College won the event with Whangarei Girls’ High School placing second. Dargaville Intermediate School gained the Music Soundtrack Award. “Showquest is a student-led production, which incorporates dance, drama and technology. The emphasis is on the students taking the reins,” says teacher Haley Corfield. “Participating gives them the opportunity to do what they love, whether it be dance, drama, directing, being a part of the backstage team or all of the above. It takes maturity to handle such a delicate topic as grief and to include everyone. It shows our students that a small rural school can go up against much bigger schools with

more of an arts focus and still be in the running.” Ms Corfield says pupils also learn that working in a team is enjoyable, which is why Dargaville High School competes in this competition and Stage Challenge annually. “It is a valuable experience to be involved. Bream Bay and Whangarei Girls’ High School are always going to be tough competition. Their concepts were well beyond what would be expected of high school students, and they each have a few wins under their belt. “Judging by the tears of the audience members in dress rehearsals and the performance night, students know that they communicated something important.” ¢

Time honoured sporting tradition

The young players of Ruawai’s junior rugby team have enjoyed some international exposure in recent weeks, as they return from a tour to Sydney, Australia.
p Ruawai’s junior rugby team pose by a world-famous landmark in Sydney as they get set to take on Australian club Beecroft
The sporting exchange, which saw 18 boys and 16 adults take flight across the Tasman to play a threematch series, is now in its 39th year, alternating with Australian friends and rivals Beecroft Rugby Club in the suburbs of Sydney. A chance meeting through a work colleague in the early 1980s started this turn-about system of international games, with the Aussies, set to travel here, to Ruawai, for a historic 40th game in 2020. Organisers say that this is more than just a chance to test the mettle of the rugby juniors, but also an opportunity to make lifelong friendships. This
year’s tour saw dads joining in who had travelled to face the Beecroft 15 when they were young. This time, they were there to support a new generation. Next year, plans are afoot for these ‘old boys’ to face off again as part of the 40thanniversary celebration. The parents, coaches and leadership of the club would like to thank their kind sponsors, and all those who have helped billet visiting Australian lads during the years. This year the Beecroft 15 won the trophy, making the rivalry all the more fierce for 2020’s engagement. ¢

Full support for the game A chance to say thanks u by Andy Bryenton
There was a substantial turnout and at least one surprise guest at Southern Rugby’s recent sponsor’s day in Te Kopuru.
A large crowd of close to 100 people attended an annual Dargaville Rotary Club ‘thank you’ evening, gathering at Dargaville’s Vintage Machinery Club auditorium on Wednesday, May 8 to listen to a keynote speech by Doctor Elizabeth Berryman.
p Tane the Taniwha makes a guest appearance at Southern Rugby’s sponsors day
Saturday, May 4 saw families gather at the club rooms to watch some exciting football and to celebrate the contribution of the more than 100 sponsors who make this ‘grass roots’ level of the game possible. Club spokesman Chris Fife says that it would have been impossible to create the facilities, which Southern enjoys without the generous aid of those sponsors both corporate and private. “Especially today, we can’t thank them enough,” he says. “All of this, and all the history belongs to them as much as to the players. Our supporters make us strong.” It’s a sentiment shared by a special guest on the day
who should know. Tane the Taniwha, proud mascot of Northland rugby, was there to raise the kauri tree banner and meet and greet fans young and old. The monster mascot donned red and black Southern club strip before taking the field, delighting the locals. That boosted enthusiasm before a game against Mid Western, where top of the table Southern was level 5–5 at half-time but succumbed to a fierce second round rally to end the game 10–22 to the visitors. Round two starts soon, with some tough matchups on the way, but Southern remain optimistic as they head into the second stretch of the season. ¢
p Doctor Elizabeth Berryman presented an address to the annual Dargaville Rotary Club ‘thank you’ supper last week
Rotary president Viv Trounson says that the event, which included a catered supper as well as the featured presentation on modern medicine, workplace dynamics and dealing with crisis, served a greater purpose than just entertainment and fellowship. “Above all else, it’s our chance to say thank you for all your help over the year. For a small club, our local Rotary does a lot of good, and it’s thanks to the assistance of our volunteers,” Mr Trounson said. He spoke of many of the successful Rotary campaigns from international
polio eradication through to local youth scholarships and exchanges, and an active future leaders’ programme. The often relies on non-member volunteers for big events; an example is Northland Field Days, where 15 club members went out to help assist with parking but brought more than 80 volunteers with them. Doctor Berryman, herself a former Rotary youth leadership programme member, has recently returned from a speaking engagement in Houston, Texas, where she presented an address on ethics in modern medicine, with a focus on digital media. ¢

Gearing up to help business grow We’re getting ready for a predicted 25% increase in demand for power in only eight years’ time from many of our commercial customers, by upgrading our Kioreroa substation in Whangarei. This substation powers over 1000 mostly commercial and industrial customers around Port Road and Rewa Rewa Road, including Carter Holt sawmills. This $1.5 million investment means we’ll be providing a more secure supply to our customers in this area, greatly reducing the risk of future power outages. We’re now 70% of the way through the project – so far we’ve put in the infrastructure at Kioreroa so we can attach a new line to connect to our supply at Maungatapere and Kensington, lowering the risk of an outage to those customers supplied by Kioreroa substation. It’s another example of the projects we’re working on to ensure a reliable power supply to meet our customers’ future needs, while improving safety and environmental compliance along the way.

Ready to ride Roping Club member 12-year-old April Fletcher will be heading off to Gympie, Australia to compete in an international barrel racing competition against competitors from the USA, Australia and Canada. “It will be a cool trip and I’m really excited. It will teach me a lot, even if I don’t win; it’s the experience,” she said. Riders of all ages came from as far north as Morewa and south from Otorohanga to take part in the weekend activities, which included barrel racing, team roping and social time.
Club spokesman Steven Allen said the club was wanting to encourage families and younger people to come and join up. He said many of those who were club members had started out as novices and were now gaining confidence in their riding and roping skills. The club meets each weekend at the Paparoa showgrounds. ¢

Be saw safe this season
Pay attention!
u by Andy Bryenton
The chainsaw has transformed the way we work with timber and made many of our lives a lot easier when it comes to yard maintenance and that all-important winter firewood. Nevertheless, like any tool, a chainsaw deserves respect. Follow the professionals and take heed of these top tips to coincide with 2019 Chainsaw Safety Awareness Week. Chainsaw work clothing should be snug-fitting, with no loose elements getting in your way. Wear trousers with a reinforced cut-retardant layer, or invest in the latest in timber-workers’ chaps filled with fibres that clog the blade and save your skin in an emergency. Your shoes should be protective cut-retardant footwear with non-slip soles and steel toecaps and protect your hands with heavy-duty non-slip gloves, preferably in leather. Don’t forget to wear proper head, face and eye protection as well as earplugs or mufflers. Next, check the saw itself. A rattly, rusty old saw with the wrong parts, half-bodged repairs or a dull, poorly tensioned chain is an accident waiting to happen, and a hassle to work with even if nothing goes wrong. If in doubt, don’t use the chainsaw, especially if you were not the last one to operate it. Additionally, while it seems like a basic precaution, don’t forget to check your work area. Plan out your strategy when cutting limbs

Keep two hands on the saw and hold it close to your body, with the body of the saw close to what you’re cutting. Plant your feet firmly and slightly apart for balance. Never try to adjust your chain or machine while the engine is running. They also note that good maintenance will extend the chainsaw’s life and ensure it is safe to use. When you finish a job make sure the air filters, sprocket cover and chain brake mechanism are free from
sawdust; clean the guide bar groove; oil the holes and check everything is in place. Thanks to Stihl, we have a set of safety equipment to give away during Chainsaw Safety Awareness Week. To be in to win this special edition STIHL Chainsaw Safety Pack, which consists of chaps, ear muffs and safety glasses, email your name and phone number to comp@integrity.nz with the correct answer to the following question. Exceed for speed u by Andy Bryenton
When Toyota wanted to make its original 2000GT something special, they turned to Yamaha to make its engine truly sing. Decades later they came back to help Toyota’s affiliates Lexus with their LFA supercar. Moreover, there’s a level above having Yamaha work on your block or cylinder heads. When the company make a vehicle all by themselves, you get something deliciously mad. Like their nearly forgotten OX99-11 jet fighter-meets-hypercar mash-up, which revved into five digits and looked like something from an anime movie or the YZF R1, the superbike’s superbike, that
can make you forget everything from the word ‘Hayabusa’ to your name and address with a quick burst of savage acceleration. Yamaha, then, is no stranger to cranking up more speed and performance from their product range. So what happens when they take something already certifiably insane and turn it up to 11? The answer is twofold. The first part is the track-only, carbon fibre bodied, 200 horsepower R1M, a bike made for those with nerves of titanium and

p Yamaha’s YXZ has gotten even faster, with a hardcore new super Sport model ready for turbocharged performance
a need for industrial firefighting sized volumes of adrenaline. The other, which does the business off-road, is a new, fettled, upgraded version of the YXZ1000R, already a serious contender for ‘maddest side-by-side’. Here’s the recipe. Take one, already spicy YXZ with its three-cylinder engine, long travel Fox shocks and lightweight tubular frame. Then boost it up to 998cc with improved cooling from a Baja racer styled rear mounted radiator, right up out of the dust and stones. Beef up the transmission so that it’s now a constant mesh 5-speed unit, with race-car style paddle shifters and an automatic clutch. Nudge the redline up to 10,500 rpm,
in superbike territory. Then invite your customers to garnish it with jalapenos. No, seriously. Along with all those upgrades (and some nifty new beadlocked rims, improved roll cage and a sharper look), the internals of the Yamaha’s engine are all forged for extra strength, which means only one thing. They dare you; nay, command you to bolt a turbo onto this beast and make it scream. It’s one thing to know that your client base is passionate about lateral Gs and big air. It’s another to know them so well that you pre-prepare your engine to receive the blessings of the God of Boost. Well played, Yamaha. Well played indeed. ¢

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. *Results may vary
