The annual event is organised in conjunction with the Northern Football Federation and Sport Northland and sponsored by Silver Fern Farms. Seventy-four teams participated from Dargaville Primary School, Ruawai, St Joseph’s, Arapohue and Tangiteroria. “It’s all about having fun and trying out the sport. I would imagine a lot of these children would not have played this sport before. This gives them the opportunity to try it out in a relaxed and non-competitive environment,” said Northland Football Development manager, Dave Alabaster.

Many thanks to Transpower Community Fund for their grant. As further funding comes to hand, we plan to add exercise stations at intervals along the path.”

Matakohe bridge construction begins u by Paul Campbell

As a $23 million, 2.5 kilometre highway realignment takes shape, the Matakohe skyline is dominated by massive crane — the smaller of two cranes at 100 tonnes which arrived from the South Island where it was used in the Kaikoura earthquake recovery operation.

Hearing set for chicken farm Prior to announcing a hearings date, KDC and NRC asked Tegel to supply a further cultural impact assessment of effects on Kapehu Marae and the associated burial ground. The proposed farm will sit five metres from the marae. The request also asks Tegel to supply an alternative location along with further details regarding the positive economic effects, noise and vibration, antimicrobial resistance, an assessment of the proposed flood control work, further information from an odour expert and lastly information relating to the effects of the proposed flood control work on State Highway 12. Section 6.3.1 of Tegel’s application suggested there would be increased employment during the construction period, estimating tens of millions of dollars would be injected into the local construction and contracting industry

and for approximately 32 full-time workers. However, the letter sent to Tegel states there was no detail or technical evidence provided to justify these statements. Rosie Donovan of the Dargaville Chicken Farm Community Information group said the group supports the use of individual commissioners. “We’ve been pleased with the way the consent authorities have been processing the application. “We thought that the application was deficient in some areas. “We’re pleased to see that the councils are requesting further information, but this makes it hard for the submitters to address the application when that information wasn’t originally provided. Submitters did make it clear to councils that the cultural impact assessment needed to be included.” ¢

p A birds-eye view of the Matakohe realignment with bridge work underway

An even larger 300 tonne crane has also arrived on-site, trucked in sections in a seven-vehicle convoy. “This crane is not required yet and so remains in pieces,” said NZTA communications and stakeholder manager, Barbara Ware.” It is unlikely to be needed for another six to eight weeks during which time the team will start to put it together.” The bridge spans will be 55 metres and 190 metres respectively. Meanwhile, NZTA’s progress report says earthworks continue across the site. ‘Drivers passing through the site will have noticed significant changes to the limestone quarry where we continue to cut material, which is used for access roads and to form the

base layers of the road realignment. ‘Rock armour has been laid in several areas across the site and drainage works are progressing including culvert construction. ‘The earthworks team has also constructed temporary access roads and laydown areas to begin building the new bridges. Piling works at both bridge sites will continue throughout the year. ‘Heritage New Zealand has been informed of our most recent archaeological find on-site, an old horsedrawn chain harrows uncovered at the east end of the site.’ NZTA has also warned children to avoid walking or cycling through the construction area because of heavy vehicles and constricted traffic flows. ¢

Something to cheer about Springing to success u by Jill Dickie

u by Ayla Miller

A Matakohe 11-year-old, Tasharna Rose Keogh, has been announced Cheerleader of the Year after being involved in the sport for only one year.

Dargaville gymnast Grace Christey has a spring in her step and for a good reason.

Tasharna, known as T-Shay in the cheerleading world, joined Blackout Cheer NZ in January last year and has won four golds and one silver in her individual routine, as well as several more medals in duo and team events. This year she is in two teams again, Black Gold and Black Ice, and they will be in three national competitions, a two-day competition in Australia, then on to the Australian Nationals two-day competition on the Gold Coast. Tasharna lives with her grandparents Karen and Craig Pullar. “It has taken a few years, but she has come out of her shell, and now the cheerleading is making our beautiful little girl smile and forget the hard parts of her life, so it makes all the travelling and p Tasharna flying through her routine hours of training worth it just to see that Tasharna hopes to one day smile,” says Karen. represent New Zealand in the World Championships in Australia and America. The 11-year-old Dargaville Intermediate student is the first Northlander to be selected to represent New Zealand at the Association of National Aerobics Championships International Aerobic and Youth Aerobics Championships held in Arizona this year. Coach, Ashleigh McCaw, said the announcement was ‘very exciting’ for the other aerobics members to see someone training towards this type of event. “We hope that the community will get in behind this young athlete to support her with achieving her goals and being a role model for up and coming athletes in our region.” Grace has been a member of the aerobics club based in Whangarei called Active Attitude for four years and started her training at the Dargaville Gymnastics Club held at the Community Hall. She has been involved in aerobic gymnastics for the past three years. She says her favourite thing about gymnastics is: “The fun of competing and overcoming all the challenges it provides.” She has also represented Northland at three National Championships and travels to Whangarei twice a week to train with her Active Attitude Aerobics Academy teammates.

Ashleigh says Grace has “an amazing work ethic and is a pleasure to coach and be around. “Her constant search for improvements in her performance has helped her to get this far and will be one of her strengths going into her next phase of training for an international competition.” Ashleigh encourages anyone who would like to support Grace to email admin@activeattitude.co.nz and connect with any funders in the community who would like to support youth development. ¢

Realising funding opportunities

Entries are now open for the 2018 Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards, and organisers are encouraging Kaipara businesses to get onboard.

Kaipara residents have access to $3.9 billion worth of funding opportunities; however, Dargaville library manager Lisa Salter says many people do not know about it. These opportunities can be found on the database, Generosity NZ, which is a subscription ser vice provided by Kaipara District Council and available for all Kaipara residents. The website holds thousands of funding databases that can be searched with criteria related to individual scholarships or community group funding. A Northland Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman says at this stage there has only been a small amount of interest from Kaipara businesses and traditionally numbers from the Kaipara area have been low. “There will be a workshop to help entrants through the process in Dargaville June 12, from 12–3pm at your business. Entering is a great tool to improve businesses and increase their profile, and we have a category for any business,” she said. New Zealand Chambers of Commerce Northland CEO, Tony Collins, says judges are looking forward to meeting the 2018 entrants as they support them through the entry process. “The awards are a fantastic tool to help business owners identify their strengths and weaknesses while developing their business model for future opportunities. It’s all about celebrating business success in Northland.” There is no cost to enter the awards and entrants do not need to be a member of the chamber. “There are a number of opportunities for businesses to raise their profile and inspire their employees throughout the entry

process. We enjoy seeing the entrants come together at the various networking opportunities and share their successes and ideas. There are many benefits for entrants and category winners, who will receive a marketing and media package valued at over $2,500 to promote their win and add value back into the business,” said Mr Collins. Businesses from the not-for-profit, innovation and creative industries are also celebrated alongside the business categories. Entrants are encouraged to attend a free awards workshop or arrange a one-to-one meeting at their business, to gain insight and tips on how to prepare their entry and learn more about what the judges are looking for. “The awards have celebrated winners from all over the region and from a range of sectors over the last 40 years. We are always left inspired by the passion business owners express as they share their story of doing business in Northland,” says Mr Collins. Entries and nominations for the Business Awards Categories opened on April 23 and close on Tuesday, July 31.

Aranga School has been presented with a sports equipment prize for their photographic entry in the recent Northland Regional Council Sea Week Beach Clean-up competition.

p The photo which won the prize in the scenic category

The Mangawhai Recreational Trust trustee Gordon Hosking says the plan was ‘brewed over a few brews,’ and is designed to get cyclists off the road as well as connecting Mangawhai village with the vineyards. Mangawhai Activity Zone chairperson, Colin Gallagher, says MAZ and the Mangawhai Recreational Trust are working closely together with Viranda Holdings Ltd, the developers of the large-scale Mangawhai Central development, to ensure their projects complement one another and are not duplicated.

The concept plan shows the track would link Molesworth Drive to Cove Road and be wide enough for cyclists, walkers, runners and pushchairs to use. Mr Hosking says the path is deliberately curved to control cyclists’ speed to keep pedestrians safe. The trust volunteers have planted native shrubs along the trail and plan to do more work over the course of its development. A jetty is planned to connect the coast with the village along with outdoor art, sculptures and picnic tables to be added in the future. ¢

Representation Review Every six years all councils in New Zealand review their representation arrangements, as required by the Local Electoral Act 2001. Kaipara District Council is in the process of deciding what representation arrangements it will use for its next two elections, so the outcome of the current review will apply to the 2019 and 2022 elections. The decision will be informed by staff research into the demographic and social considerations, pre-consultation sessions and a period of formal public consultation. The matters up for consideration in the current Kaipara District Council Representation Review are:the number of wards,- how representatives are elected, from wards, ‘at large’ (i.e. by the whole district) or a mix of both- the number of Councilors Council is currently seeking informal feedback from the community on how to best represent people across the district. Details include the rating valuation, services available or connected to the rating unit, the legal description, and the area of the rating unit. In accordance with section 27(7)(b) of the Act, the Northland Regional Council has delegated the functions of maintaining the database to the Kaipara District Council. Any ratepayer may object (to be in writing) to the information contained in the database. Objections may be lodged at any of the above locations or by posting to Kaipara District Council, Private Bag 1001, Dargaville 0340. Aranga School teachers, parents, and 26 students between five and twelve years old collected rubbish items from Waikara Beach between the end of March and April 15 with the support of Te Roroa and DOC staff. “To have been recognised for our efforts is hugely satisfying,” said Aranga School administrator, Louise Pocklington. A statistical survey was submitted to Northland Regional Council afterwards, noting quantities found during the cleanup, and the likely source identified. The number of litter items collected totalled in the thousands and included medicine, cell phones, and glowsticks. Aranga School picked up 103 items on 1,200m2 of coastline. The percentage collected was 50% household/personal,

26% food related, 14% fishing related with the remainder made of construction and unknown items. By comparison, the Ripiro Beach group collected 129 rubbish items, of which 14% was household/personal, 85% food related, and 1% fishing gear. “This sends a simple message, take your rubbish with you and explore alternatives to single-use items,” says Environmental monitoring officer, Nick Bamford. The Seaweek beach clean-up programme is hosted by the NZ Association for Environmental Education, to promote learning and encourage behaviour that leads to sustainability for New Zealand, empowering people and children to respect and nurture the environment. ¢

Music month by the riverside u by Andy Bryenton

New Zealand music has a rich and varied history, and there’s no shortage of musical talent here in the Kaipara. Each May, as the nation celebrates a canonical collection of hits dating back to the era of rock ‘n’ roll and before, there’s also plenty of opportunity for people around the country to come out and support the new, experimental, up-and-coming or just plain interesting sounds of their own corner of New Zealand.

p Annette Knight with some of her knitted items

Annette is knitting and donating tiny beanies and cot blankets to the hospital as gifts for parents, and intends to make booties and jackets in the near future. Colours not suited to babies will be used for knitting beanies for local kindergartens. “I deeply appreciate the work you do. My very prem baby was born at Whangarei Hospital and was given a

tiny little beanie before he passed away. Such a small gesture can mean the world to an anxious or grieving parent,” said Dargaville resident, Lisa Richards. Annette is asking for further donations of three-ply, four-ply, and eight-ply wool from other knitters with leftovers and remnants. They can be left with Amanda at Snazzi Gifts, or phone Annette 09 439 0028. ¢

This year Dargaville’s May music month concert is being held at a location usually more associated with sails and anchors than with guitars and amps. Still, there’s a good reason for the Northern Wairoa Boating Club to open their doors to a selection of local bands and artists next week — there’s no better backdrop for some live music than the water views from their clubrooms. Boating club commodore, Rodney Wilson and the club committee have been wholehearted supporters of local music, already hosting a number of successful concert events at their mid-town site. Fuel prices raise questions Recycling a ‘smelly’ situation u by Ayla Miller

u by Ayla Miller

Dargaville motorists may have noticed a difference in the price of fuel between Whangarei and Dargaville petrol stations and an AA PetrolWatch spokesperson says the ‘Gull effect,’ is still a major contributing factor.

Kaipara Refuse are paying up to tens of thousands of dollars to dispose of contaminated and non-recyclable products mixed up in recycling bags.

AA PetrolWatch spokesperson, Mark Stockdale, says the introduction of a Gull petrol station prompts other local petrol stations to drop their prices to remain competitive due to lower overheads. However, the price charged in Dargaville is in line with the ‘national’ price. “Dargaville motorists aren’t paying more than many other Kiwi motorists, even in big cities. But there are parts of New Zealand where prices are cheaper — notably Whangarei and Auckland, and we attribute this to the ‘Gull effect.’ “Anything less than the national price is what we regard as a discounted price. AA’s advice to Dargaville/Kaipara residents is that if they observe cheaper prices when visiting Whangarei, then we recommend they take the opportunity to fill up there whenever they can to save money, and if they’re planning on travelling maybe keep an eye on the Gaspy app to see which locations and service stations have the lowest prices.” Gull spokesperson, Karl Mischewski, says Gull are looking for a site in Dargaville and encourage anyone with a potential site to contact them. “We have been actively looking for suitable locations in Dargaville so we will continue to do that. We haven’t forgotten

p Kaipara Refuse employees

p Mark Stockdale, AA PetrolWatch spokesperson says the ‘Gull effect’ is the reason behind the fuel price difference

Dargaville, and we are interested — it’s just a matter of finding the right site, in the right location for the right price, which can be the challenge.” Mr Mischewski, said the site needs to be on a busy road with suitable access in and out for the fuel tankers. ¢

Managing director, Rob Battcher, says it is disappointing to see how much rubbish is disposed of in the user pays recycling bags. “The worst part is the dirty nappies and meat bones. These are obviously not recyclable, but people still put them in. People also leave milk in the bottom of the bottle. Once that has sat around for a week or so and then gets to us, the smell is awful. It is the same with unwashed pet food tins,” he says. Since December last year, the Ruawai transfer station has also become home to one large shipping container filled with bales of high-density polyethylene or number two mixed plastics, which they can no longer find a market for — this includes blue, brown and clear plastic bottles.

“The council is supporting us to stockpile it for a while, but it doesn’t look like there will be any market for it in the near future,” said Mr Battcher. If a buyer cannot be found the plastic will go to a landfill. A Chinese ban on foreign waste came into effect on January 1 this year meaning all plastic, unsorted waste paper and textiles once sent there for recycling now has to go elsewhere. “It’s a difficult time to be in the recycling industry — there’s just so much plastic out there.” Kaipara Refuse is a charitable trust, which employs people with disabilities to collect Dargaville’s recycling and sort it before it is taken to Auckland and sold to buyers overseas. ¢

SAFETY

The forest industry has invested millions making our forests safer to work in. Most of our harvesting operators are working inside specialised machines, instead of wielding chainsaws like they all used to. Our serious injury rate in forests has fallen. We put a high priority on learning from our mistakes. No other primary industry makes more of a safety effort than we do.

She was recently employed by Whangaparaoa New World as operations manager and is now busy with the operational side of the new business.

New bakery rises

ADVERTORIAL

u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville is in for a tasty surprise this week, as the longawaited, much anticipated MOA Bakery turns on the ovens and opens the doors on Victoria Street.

New liquor store opens Wine connoisseurs and craft beer enthusiasts are in for a treat with the opening of The Bottle-O Dargaville, which boasts the biggest range in Northland.

p MOA Bakery promises to be turning out steaming fresh loaves like these ones by mid-week

It’s been a while in the making, but the premises sparkles with brand new glass and chrome, while out in the back room massive mixers and rollers are ready to knead out the first helping of speciality bread. With a menu spanning healthy sandwiches through to pies, sweet treats and more, the focus here is on home-baked goodness. There won’t be much on site — except a range of soft drinks — not made by hand by bakery boss Chandara and his team.

The allure of delicious fresh loaves on the main street adds to a bumper week for new speciality shops opening in Dargaville — a reflection of the growth happening in the little town. Chandara and the MOA Bakery crew welcome one and all to their establishment to try something new this week, and there’s a particularly enticing opening week special as well. Open at dawn; it’s their espresso coffee, which may make the biggest splash with early risers! ¢

Our origins and inspirations A true colonial era icon At the turn of the century, as the 1800s came to a close, Mr Joseph White moved his family to the interestingly named town of Crow’s Nest, near Toowoomba Australia. A country town through and through, Crow’s Nest was a great place to settle, but also a place which challenged the entrepreneurial spirit of Joseph’s son Ray. Determined to make his mark in business, the young man rented a disused corrugated iron shed and turned his hand to selling anything and everything the farming community needed - from auctioning pigs to selling Model T Fords and more. Hard work, community involvement and a grasp of marketing ahead of his time saw Ray’s business grow. But aged 46 he made a huge change. Moving to urban Brisbane, he took the daring step of starting over, his sights set on the real estate trade. A winning work ethic and a reputation for honesty saw the business reach a second and then a third generation, expanding to New Zealand as well as Australia. Here in Dargaville Ray White Jean Johnson Real Estate are proud to carry the name of their visionary founder into the future, as well as his ideals of a strong community and integrity in business. argaville's oldest family business is in the business of keeping families warm and comfortable — an endeavour first begun in late '36, when a new store opened across from the old post office, at an intersection which was then a dirt road traversed by model T fords and horses. The new Munn's furniture and flooring store brought a new level of luxury to the settlement, with massive and intricately patterned rugs on display. As this was before the advent of the vacuum cleaner, these hand-woven floor coverings would be taken outdoors yearly to be beaten clean of dust!

Dargaville is famous as the ‘Kauri town of the north’ - the place where settlers from many lands met and traded during the Kauri timber and gum boom times of the 1800s. As one can expect, the largest and most imposing tavern and hotel in such a frontier town is packed with history, and has been the scene of many intriguing events since its initial foundation in December of 1878. One of the first buildings with electric light in the settlement, the Northern Wairoa Hotel has also been noted as the first destination for an air mail delivery in New Zealand - a seaplane landed on the river to deliver this historic message. A popular establishment serving drinks to the foresters, gumdiggers, ship builder and traders of olden times, the grand ballroom (now the hotel’s restaurant) has played host to many memorable concerts and dances, while residents in the hotel’s accommodation have ranged from outlaws to aristocrats. There’s some debate as to whether a fire damaged the hotel extensively in 1920 - a massive rebuild and renovation took place that year. If the old bones of this grand hotel still exist beneath the art-deco surface, it may very well be one of the oldest surviving colonial taverns in New Zealand.

STOP CHASSIS RUST PROLAN is a company founded on a truly ingenious Kiwi idea. What if we could use lanolin - the natural protective grease found in sheep’s wool to protect them from the cold, rain and wind - to help shield metal against the ravages of rust? Lanolin is plentiful, natural, renewable and an all round amazing substance - it works as a long-lasting and durable coating which stops the rust process in its tracks. What a great discovery! Over the years our scientists have developed all kinds of applications for lanolin, leading to a range of PROLAN products. With winter here, PROLAN Enduro Heavy grade is a life saver, protecting truck, ute,

motor home and tractor chassis from the damp and muddy conditions. Our standard Prolan Enduro Medium grade or ‘sheep in a can’ spray is a must have for boaties, quad bike and dirt bike riders, tradesmen and the home handyman. A Prolan coating stays on once applied, driving out rust, saving work, time, worry and money. Cold water blasting won’t even take Prolan off! PROLAN - an invention that’s ‘KIWI AS’ sourced from New Zealand sheep’s wool to protect New Zealand’s rural and marine fleet!

• Stops corrosion by preventing air and moisture attack. • Long lasting protection saving time on multiple reapplication. • Improve COF & WOF checkouts. • Environmentally friendlier

Electricity came a few years later, and with it the vacuum — leading to a desire for the new invention of 'fitted carpets'. Linoleum flooring for wet areas followed post war, and advances in material technology saw the range at Munn's branch out from wool to synthetic fibers for hardwearing comfort. Today, after generations of customers and generations of flooring experts in the family, the Munns name is still synonymous with quality flooring. Gone are the days of 'beating' your carpet for dust in the springtime — in fact, there are those who say a Munns FLooring Xtra carpet can't be beaten at all!

Our origins and inspirations Composting Toilets

OUR INSPIRATION IS YOUR AMAZEMENT...

No consents required Waste is turned into compost

The best part about quality second hand shopping is the element of surprise. That's why every single one of the carefully collected pieces at Maungaturoto Second Hand is picked to be perfect for somebody - from clothing to antique jewellery, furniture to tools, books, music and homewares... it's a treasure trove that's just plain good fun to search through for that something special. Now there's an extra aspect to this ever-surprising little local business - a delivery and removals truck with tail lift, driveable on a car license and large double tandem horse float available for rental. Both provide a great way to move those big items and houselots - timely as gypsy day approaches on June 1st.

Uses no chemicals Uses no water

No plumbing No smell

Incredibly, although these units are approximately the same size as a conventional household toilet they are a complete composting system. NO PIPES, NO PUMPS AND NO SMELLY CHEMICALS. They are simple to install, cheap to run and require no day-to-day maintenance. And because this is a complete system you can unclip it from the floor of the sleepout and take it away in the motorhome or boat over the summer break. Or take it camping. They use no water, another advantage for the beach house or the cruising yacht. There is a small 12 volt fan incorporated in the unit that can be powered by a small solar panel for off — grid situations. If you are interested in seeing what these little topsoil factories look like and how they work give John a call, he will tuck one under his arm and come & show you. 75 YEARS YOUNG! The Northern Wairoa Boating Club is one of the longest established organisations in the town by the 'Mississippi of New Zealand' - founded by keen boaties and anglers who wanted to get out and have fun on the southern hemisphere's biggest harbour. Those flocking to live here for the outdoors lifestyle are learning that the Kaipara has wonderful maritime views, hearty fishing opportunities and a unique place in local history. That's why we're inviting those with boats - or those looking to dip a toe into the water of boating - to come and join us. We're a friendly bunch with one thing in common - a love for the outdoors and the sea. As a brand new boating centre opens in town, it's a timely reminder that we've been supporting local boaties for nearly 75 years, with a place to meet, greet, and eat - our steak night and roast night are legendary around these parts, and you're welcome to come and take a seat at the table!

Farrand & Mason Ltd GENERAL & PRECISION ENGINEERS

Operating since the 1950s, Farrand and Mason are the old established name in engineering in Dargaville. This fact is reflected not just in a roll-call of impressive numbers — over 100 apprentices trained, for example — but also in some of the hard to find and downright fascinating machinery stored in their busy workshop.

That's not to mention the tools and equipment — there's a whole shop full, including Husqvarna's range of outdoor power equipment, itself part of a tradition started in 1689! If you need it fixed, fabricated, welded, restored... if you want cutting-edge key cutting and locksmithing... or if you want to use the tools recommended by the professionals,

From a gigantic metal cutting machine originally intended to run on IT'S ALL UNDER ONE ROOF, steam, through to a fully operational RIGHT HERE! and upgraded crane mounted on a WW2 era Mack vintage truck, the Farrand and Mason team have a respect for their metalworking craft through the ages, and an old fashioned attitude — we CAN fix it, we WILL find a way, and we DO have the skills to solve your problems.

GOLD CARD & RETIREMENT Looking to the future u by Andy Bryenton

It’s long been an accepted fact that New Zealand has an ageing population, with many of those born during the post-war ‘baby boom’ now reaching retirement age. This trend is set to continue as the demographic ‘bump’ representing this sizeable part of the populous moves through their mid-60s and into their 70s and beyond. Now there’s a new twist to our expectations. With many of those hard-working people now reaching their retirement years, life in the big city seems like a waste of time. After all, the provinces — and especially the north — have less congestion, pollution and infill housing. Rates are generally lower, house prices cheaper. What’s more with grown families and no need to commute to work, those provinces close to the metropolis (if only for ease of access to medical infrastructure, arts and culture) are suddenly very appealing. Kaipara is no different. Aside from the numerical data, which shows an insurgence of older new residents, those who have lived in the small town heartland of the mid-north will be used to welcoming new faces in recent years. This has led to a future-proofing necessity in elder care — not just for a decade or two hence when today’s retirees may need assisted-living care or suffer from ill health, but now, as no small number of those coming north have surviving elderly parents who they ch ran on. b o roa g s pa in Pa open re-

do not want to leave behind. Expansions in care for our older citizens are underway in places like Maungaturoto, where the community-owned rest home facility is investing in more space to meet projected demand. Many rest homes have converted to hospital and dementia care units to accommodate additional demand for such services. Moreover, there’s a broader argument — regarding things as simple as safer pavements for walkers and mobility scooters, ease of access to public transport for elderly folk unable to drive, and even the current shortage of tradespeople to assist with converting homes to be safer for the physically infirm. With strong advocacy from groups like our very active chapters of Grey Power, and the foresight of community groups and private elder care businesses, the ageing population boom need not be a detriment, but a good thing for the region — and the Kaipara can help put more sunshine hours into people’s twilight years. ¢

Making importing easier

Oi!

u by Andy Bryenton

In the not too distant past, one of our Dargaville locals was engaged in helping solve a problem for our Pacific Island neighbours. Without vehicle dealerships, it was hard for people in these tiny nation states to source the vehicles they needed for business and family. A steep learning curve and a ton of paperwork know-how later, and Tropicana Motors was created, sourcing good quality vehicles from overseas and supplying the local demand. Looking beyond the Pacific Islands, Tropicana’s entrepreneurial owner Tristan saw opportunities closer to home as well. With access to the massive second-hand auction scene in Japan, links to quality Ford and Holden products in Australia, and a by now thorough knowledge of the ins and outs of import and export, she was ready to bring Tropicana home. An office in Liverpool St, as part of Dargaville’s old dairy factory complex, provides space for a selection of imported vehicles ranging from small SUVs by Suzuki to Mercedes hatchbacks and Honda people movers. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Many people make a decision on a second-hand car based on what’s available the day they go shopping — and end up with the best of a bad lot. However, there are big savings to be made in choosing just what’s right for you direct from places like Japan, where cars are made. A combination of a big auto industry, large population and different rego rules mean that lowkilometre JDM (Japanese Domestic

Market) vehicles are easy to source. Pick the colour you like, pick the style you like, save thousands — and don’t worry about the paperwork — Tropicana has it covered. All you need to do is wait for the boat to deliver your new car — and they even have insurance for during that sea voyage. If you want something reliable and with low k’s — or a real classic like a GT Skyline, RX-7 Spirit, Type-R Civic or Toyota Supra — Tropicana Motors will

find it and deliver. No on-road costs, documents or trying to master Japanese dialects to worry about. They also source Land Cruisers, utes and other off-roaders for the farm. For those who are in the market for something new, it’s a good idea to try this new method of picking just what you want, with the aid of seasoned veterans in the auto import game. Kia managed to shock and surprise everybody last year with the arrival of the speedy, slick and dynamically impressive Stinger, their answer to the best of Europe’s grand tourers. Now they’re back to surprise the world again, with a touring machine of a whole different stripe. Enter the Kia Niro, a combination of some of the hottest trends in modern motoring, and a definite one to watch. When looking at the Niro without context, it’s easy to assume that the Korean automakers simply wanted something small, compact and sports utility shaped to fit into their range between the quirky Soul and the popular Sportage. In an era when even Range Rover has a crossover, and the Toyota CH-R is the new Corolla, it makes sense. However, that’s not what the Niro is all about. Sure, it’s got that nifty ‘fun size’ sports utility shape, the same voluminous cabin with clever cubbies and storage spaces, the same higher driving position and nice safety features. Moreover, it’s also a plug-in hybrid. With Elon Musk at the door and the mass production of Tesla cars at hand — soon — the addition of a crossover hybrid hits all the zeitgeist buttons. This particular combination of internal combustion and voltage power means that you can drive for 55 kilometres without using a drop of the go-juice, and even on the open highway, you’ll sip a mere 1.4 litres per 100 kilometres. That’s a sum measured in the change under the seat. However, the Niro

p Red is the new green — Kia surprise the world again with a hybrid follow-up to their Stinger grand tourer

doesn’t fall into that other trap of frugal hybrids — it’s not boring. In eco mode, it may seem a touch leisurely, but hit sport and all 140 horsepower comes out to play. It’s no supercar, but it’s grininducing, especially as the electric motor joins in much like an old-school turbo used to, kicking in a surge of added fizz. The dual clutch six-speed box keeps it

smooth, while the twin power systems do their thing. Since arriving here in March, the plug-in Niro joins a pair of full-time hybrids in what is becoming a very interesting Kia range indeed. For those who are more concerned with the cutting edge than showboating with a Euro badge, this is where the smart money sits. ¢
