Elaine Gillespie from the Gumdiggers Cafe and Fired Earth Petting Farm, with Vanessa Murch from Matakohe Holiday Park, and The Kauri Museum CEO, Lisa Tolich have been the drivers behind the idea that has been eight months in the making. Ms Tolich says she is right behind the move to put more local attractions “on the map. “I have recently returned from the Trenz travel trade event where ‘clustering’ of attractions was discussed. From my perspective it is great to see greater depth being achieved in Matakohe and growth developing as a result of businesses co-operating together.” Elaine Gillespie says the aim was to “put something together that will work for everybody — make Matakohe a destination, and expand on the attractions so it can be a full weekend spent here.” As a result, marketing plans have started with a postcard map of local attractions. “We came up with a concept and put the idea out, and started looking for an artist. Vanessa recommended Bonnie Fraser a family friend, who is also an artist in her own right. We have worked closely with Bonnie to get it just right, something that represents all of us in the area and now we have something we are all really proud of. “There’s a whole lot of us that are new to the area and we needed to have a marketing tool that will draw people to Matakohe,” said Elaine. The map $

is currently in a postcard format, with information on each place on the back. Each of the premises has the postcards displayed and visitors can take them away. So far Elaine says visitors “think they are great and many have wanted to pay for them. “Now that we’ve got the official marketing we can put these in information sites and get it out there. The target is to have them out and about for next season which starts in late September through till just after Easter.” The next step is “working on a logo and we will look at branding in

the near future,” says Elaine. There are also plans to create more of an online presence. It’s “extremely important to have an online presence nowadays — people expect immediate access and visuals and want to make decisions straight away which is why most of the group have their own websites that can be managed individually.” “We are really happy with the outcome. The postcard as a whole really depicts the area and ourselves, as we all seem to be a bit quirky in our own way.”

p Dargaville high school hosted the ‘Silver Fern Farms Primary Schools Football Festival’ recently. The mini tournament was organised by Sport Northland and the Northern Football Federation. Five schools took part, with 66 teams all up from Tangowahine school, Dargaville Primary, Arapohue Primary, Ruawai Primary and St Joseph’s school. The aim of the tournament is to give children the opportunity to try out football and hopefully encourage them to play for the local club. Students from Dargaville high school volunteered to referee the youngsters.

From Mangawhai to Mongolia for funds
Annual street appeal

u by Joanna Manson
Empowered to help their Mangawhai community, Emma Kent and Corey Radford are taking on the Mongol Rally in 2018 to raise funds for the Mangawhai Activity Zone. The annual car rally covers 12,000 miles across mountains, desert and the steppes of Europe and Asia each year. During the rally there is no backup, no support crew and no set route — just an adventure and a set rule for participants who must raise $2,000 for a chosen charity. Emma and Corey are hoping to use the rally to support their local community and want the money they raise in the lead up to the event to go towards the completion of a planned outdoor gym and functional fitness centre at the Mangawhai Activity Zone, or better known as MAZ. “We wanted to give families and children somewhere to go where they felt there was purpose — somewhere they could play cricket or go to the gym that was away from school,” said Corey. “Over 30,000 people visit MAZ over summer and we want to keep it growing,” says Emma. “We don’t have a set goal — we are hoping to raise as much as we possibly can get. We didn’t know how the community was going to react. So far we are over the moon with the support and effort that has been given,” said Corey. The duo will set off in late June
p Dargaville Girls Brigade are having their annual door-to-door street appeal on Thursday, May 25, between 3–5pm. “Every year we are blessed by the Dargaville community with their generous donations which enables our company to run a successful programme. Please put this date on your calendar to help us make this a really good event. Any donation is gratefully received,” says organiser Pauline Taylor.

Hosts wanted for cultural visitors u by Joanna Manson
Dargaville High School will be hosting two groups of Japanese students next term and is on the lookout for several host families to help house them during their stay. Japanese language teacher Corine Leach said this would be the seventh time students from the small island of Yakushima would be visiting. “It’s a sister city relationship but really it’s actually a ‘brother-tree’ relationship, linking Tane Mahuta with their massive Jomon Sugi cedar tree.” Corine is looking for volunteer host families who ideally have children at home in their teens and are willing to look after the students and show them some Kiwi hospitably. “The best thing for our language students at Dargaville High School is that they get to interact in an authentic manner. For our other students, it’s the
experience of having people from a different country sharing cultures and finding out they are just like any other teenagers,” says Corine. “Our students are planning a trip to Japan in 2018 so this is really good creating enthusiasm for that and creating some links to visit.” Two separate groups of students will be visiting this year — the first will be here for three weeks from July 26 to August 16 and the second group will be visiting for two weeks from July 29 to August 12. Families interested in hosting can contact Corine on 021 189 9247 or at the high school on 09 439 7229. ¢

Their Victoria Street upstairs clubrooms in Dargaville, which they have rented, have been sold. “There is some doubt about the current move to another venue; mostly the loss of centrally located rooms and the flexibility the group has enjoyed,” said member Robyn Downey. The club is traditionally a day group, but these days they also hold a monthly dinner for women who work during the day. Current president Catherine Fergusson, says she joined the club to meet new people when she first moved to Dargaville. “Within two weeks I was invited to their evening meeting and I thought how warm and friendly they were. Emergency services course begins u by Joanna Manson
The national Youth in Emergency Services programme began last weekend for 18 Kaipara youth testing their abilities to handle water rescues in the Kai Iwi Lakes. It’s the first time ever that the five week YES programme has been available to the area and hosted by Kaipara emergency services for 16–18 year olds. Last Saturday at Kai Iwi Lakes training focussed on water safety alongside surf lifesaving instructors as well as landbased search and rescue. “The morning involved using the inflatable rescue boat, tube rescues, basic skills, risk identification, and getting people to put life jackets on while in the water,” said spokesperson Shona Morgan. “After lunch they switched to work with a police search and rescue team to do radio and map GPS training while looking for a lost person in the nearby scrub.” The group includes Dargaville and Ruawai High School students as well as other young nominated community members. This Saturday they will learn about the fire service and rural fire. YES is funded by the Ministry of Youth Development and this will be the fifth time the programme has been run in Northland, with a total of

65 young people so far taking part. “We want them to be challenged by a new experience and to have a better understanding about what the emergency services do,” says Shona. A graduation ceremony will end the course and Shona hopes many of the graduates go on to become involved and join their local volunteer services. ¢
Inspiring through adventure u by Joanna Manson
Author of ‘The Long Road from a Broken Heart’ and round-theworld cyclist Jeremey Scott will speak at the Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary fundraiser for the New Zealand Heart Foundation on May 23. At the tender age of four Jeremy had life-saving open heart surgery but it wasn’t until 34 years later that he embarked on a challenge to cycle the 51,916 kilometres from Britain to New Zealand that he really put his healthy heart to the ultimate test. Throughout the evening he will relive stories about various encounters along his travels which include battling a range of extreme weather conditions to being interrogated by the Iranian military who suspected him of spying. “I will touch on the encounters and challenges I had along the way — the people that inspired me, and reflect on how the journey did change me as a person,” he said. In total the challenge took two years and seven months before Jeremy reached his hometown of Auckland. Now he is spending the next four months travelling New Zealand and sharing his story and supporting the Heart Foundation on the way. “My surgeon was a pioneer for open heart surgery back in the seventies and a grant from the New Zealand Heart Foundation helped turn him into a brilliant surgeon. If if he hadn’t received that support back then I

might have not been around today, so the foundation has a very personal connection with me.” Jeremy said he was looking forward to speaking at the fundraiser evening. “The smaller communities always put in so much effort — that’s why I love speaking in those areas,” he said. To date Jeremy has raised $40,000 and was awarded the Australian Heart Foundation ‘Hero’ award in 2015. Rotary spokesperson Eileen Parsons says the evening is open to anyone interested in attending. The event will start at 7.30pm at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall — entry fee is $10. ¢

Road Works for the District – May 2017
Situations Vacant
NOTE TO DRIVERS ON UNSEALED ROADS: Unsealed roads require regular laying of maintenance aggregate. If tyres are low, road users can run the risk of punctures on freshly laid metal. The material we use is a standard product as per the maintenance contract specifications, and generally the use of heavier graded GAP 40 is applied in the winter to fix soft areas that arise due to moisture in the pavement, or in heavy build-ups to restore the structural integrity of pavement. This larger material is particularly prone to puncturing worn tyres, but is a necessary requirement during the winter months to ensure the roads are still safely negotiable. An effort will be made to roll this product where it is applied in large quantities to mitigate this issue; however, it is not practical to apply this to every instance. Please take caution when travelling on freshly laid aggregate, and check the condition of your tyres - especially if you live on the unsealed network. This is not a problem isolated to Kaipara but is an issue on all unsealed networks. Thanks for your patience. PUBLIC NOTICE Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara district. Please refer to programme below for location of spraying which is subject to weather conditions. Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole district during May include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and grading of select roads pending sufficient rainfall.
At the Kaipara District Council we are making the Kaipara a place where it is easy to live - easy to enjoy nature, easy to join in and easy to do business. We believe health and safety is integral in this endeavour, so as a Health & Safety Officer you’ll have a key role in supporting our success. You are a seasoned health and safety professional with a successful track record. You get a buzz from supporting the implementation of best practice health and safety strategy and building a safety first culture. In past roles you have been integral in delivering continuous improvements across all facets of health and safety. Most importantly, you are someone who thrives on collaboration. You know that health and safety can only succeed through coaching and influencing. You’ll use your strong interpersonal skills to positively educate and build the confidence and capacity of staff to ensure that everyone returns home safely each day. In return for your hard work and dedication you will enjoy a competitive salary and a supportive team. You will be encouraged to continue to build your health and safety expertise within the unique environment of a local authority. • Heavy metal strengthening – Houto Road • Sight improvements – Opanake and Opuna Roads • Mechanised tree pruning – Paradise Road and Kirikopuni Valley Area We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of May if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue. Area specific works completed during the last month include:
Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, the Kaipara District Council hereby gives notice that Sports Northland has made an application to have the following road temporarily closed on the day and at the time below for the Dargaville Run/Walk. Sunday 11 June 2017 - 07.00am to 01.00pm (earlier if finished before) Victoria Street, Dargaville Any objections to this proposal should be in the hands of the Kaipara District Council no later than 4.00pm on Monday 29 May 2017.
• Water table restoration – Bagnal Road • Sight improvements – Houto and Arcadia Roads
Council Meetings May/June 2017
• Slip repairs – Bull Road All routine work is done in cycles across the district. In endeavouring to provide good roads at the most economic cost, sometimes only spot grading and metalling is done as it is about one-quarter of the price of blanket metalling and grading that has tended to be done in the past. Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information.

Roadshow offered family fun challenges
Disability sports day u by Joanna Manson
Young people with a physical disability will next month have the opportunity to join other young Northlanders to try new sports, in a day designed to engage youth in sport.
u by Joanna Manson
The Ecostore roadshow visited Dargaville on May 7 as part of a four week journey calling into 50 towns and cities around New Zealand giving families the chance to compete and learn. The roadshow, sponsored by More FM, featured face painting, prizes and interactive learning while 12 lucky Dargaville families participated in an ‘against the clock’ competition to win cash. The ‘Kena Klan’ and ‘Bulls Up’ came first equal in the competition which involved following a specific design and building an ecostore soap tower in one minute. The teams at the top of the leaderboard split the prize of $250 cash. Pru Kane from the ‘Kena Klan’ family told XVenture who organised the day that their team strategy was to allocate different roles to each of the family members. “I was the tower builder, one daughter was the soap collector and the other daughter was the soap runner.” Pru said it was a lot of fun and it worked well when each person had their set job. Dad, Rowan, was cheering the team from the sideline Each team also gets to nominate a club, school or charity to win up to

The sports day will be held at ASB Stadium in Whangarei runs from 9am2.30pm and gives participants a chance to become part of the Northland team which will compete at the Halberg Junior Disability Games later this year. Surf contest winners
Time out for tiaras
u by Joanna Manson
u by Paul Campbell
A last minute decision to compete in the Bay of Plenty Inflatable Rescue Boat long haul race was a success for three Otamatea High School students who took away a second placing.
A Royal Night out is on offer at the Maungaturoto Country Club, as a local drive gets underway to raise funds for the Maungaturoto Community Trust Dementia Unit Fund.
p Tyler Flannagan 15, Quintin Brown 15, and Bailey Hudson 16
The competition which ran from Ohope to Mount Maunganui on May 6, covered 95km of coastline with four beach stops along the way. The Otamatea High School students: Quintin Brown 15, Bailey Hudson 16, and Tyler Flannagan 15, are also lifeguards at Waipu Cove and made up the three strong team competing against 13 other teams and IRBs. Quentin’s mother, Teresa Brown, said the boys only decided to compete three weeks before the event to “have a go.” “The boys were in the U21 category and there were four crews competing. They were the youngest crew overall and came second in their grade and seventh overall.
“All the parents are extremely proud and we may have shed a tear or two,” said Teresa. The IRBs were required to stop at Matata, Pukehina, Papamoa and Omanu beaches to complete a series of crew challenges such as assembling and breaking down their equipment and performing rescues. Surf Life Saving New Zealand Eastern Region sport manager Mark Inglis says the format was changed to a stage race last year to allow for closer competition. “The event is designed to test surf lifeguards’ ability to respond to a callout or rescue and often it’s only seconds separating the crews when they hit the beach to start each of the challenges.” ¢
The Riverview Rest Home project stage one is set to cost about $1 million and will see a dementia unit which will initially accommodate up to eight people and a new kitchen added to the current rest home. Further stages priced at $3 million will allow the trust to provide updated dining facilities and lounges plus a further eight dementia beds and add six general beds to the wider home. “As it will be Queen’s Birthday on Friday, June 2, The Maungaturoto Country Club will be holding a Royal Night,” said event spokesman, Albie Paton. “Club members, their guests, and members of the public are all welcome at a $10 cover charge, with all profits from the evening going to the dementia unit fund. Get out your tiaras and crowns and your Royal looking gear and have some fun at the expense of the Royal family. British or any other Royal family,” he says. “Young or old there are plenty of them. The Queen and Prince Philip, Charles and Camilla, William, Kate and the kids, Harry, the kings and queens of Tonga, Siam, wherever.” Normal bar and meals will be available from 6pm and there are prizes to be won. Tickets are available at the club or from Albie Paton — phone 09 431 8148 or 027 494 9448. “Just to add a bit more entertainment to the weekend The Den in Bickerstaffe Road will be holding a garage sale over the three

days with all proceeds also going to the dementia fund,” Albie adds. “If you have any goods you would like to donate please contact me on those numbers.” Members of the community trust will be available to explain the dementia unit plans. ¢

Rich past, bright future u by Andy Bryenton
It’s nearly 150 years since pioneering businessman Joseph McMullen Dargaville drew up the plans for his ‘model’ town by the banks of the Northern Wairoa River. Since then there’s been plenty of change, but the demographic shift which has been gathering momentum in recent years may be as important to the town of Dargaville’s future as the great Kauri boom was to its past. From a hub for ship building and the timber trade through to a rural support town for a thriving dairy and cropping industry, now Dargaville has attracted the attention of a demographic peak of older Kiwis looking to leave the city behind. This is already beginning to change the look of the main street, and alter the property market, as recently reported by members of the real estate industry here in the West Kaipara. With amenities such as the seat of council, a hospital, retirement homes and a large supermarket, there’s plenty to attract those urban dwellers who wish to enjoy the best of the country life, but still have the benefit of cosmopolitan services. A well stocked library, vibrant artistic scene, local cinema and theatre add to the cultural tapestry. And of course there’s a whole street of specialist shops to enjoy in the main street, with new ones under construction even now to boost the opportunities for a little dining, strolling and retail therapy. As new faces appear in our neighbourhoods and the town of Dargaville evolves again, it’s time to look

Welcome to Wellsford Rippa Rugby success
Winning fishers
u by Joanna Manson
Rippa Rugby season is in full swing at Wellsford Primary School after the winning year 5–6 teams were awarded their winning trophy by Northland Rugby.
p The Kaiwaka based Point Curtis Cruising Club held a fishing competition recently. Vouchers and fishing gear from Wellsford Sports and Leisure and Catch Fishing were won by juniors Joseph Walker for kahawai and trevally and Tyler Young for snapper. In the senior section the winners were Carol Welsford-Mills for her kingfish and snapper, Trevor Wright for kahawai, Louise Alpress for trevally and gurnard and Dave Kennedy for crayfish.
p The winning Wellsford School year 5-6 Rippa Rugby team
The team who won the Mitre 10 Mega year 5–6 Rippa Rugby final back in April will compete in Wellington later in the year. A special school assembly was held to recognise the achievements of the team who were presented with a trophy and certificates from Northland Ruby representatives, Matt Matich and Paul Hope. “This team will represent Northland in Wellington, September 17–19. They have trained for months and now we will
refine their skills and work on set moves for the Nationals,” said coach and Wellsford School teacher Philip Lees. Mr Lees said the team was “ecstatic” to be heading to Wellington for the competition as some of the children had never been on a plane before. “They deserve it and will represent Northland with honour,” he said. The school’s Rippa teams were also treated to a training session with Matt Matich. ¢

Sharks make Northland squad u by Joanna Manson
Three Western Sharks players have been selected for the 2017 Northland High Performance Squad including Matt Matich who has also been named in the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians team.
p The new Tropex Junior team after their game last Saturday
The new Pouto Point based ‘Tropex Netball Academy’ has two senior teams in the premier league and one year seven team in the JMB league. From grading in April, the senior teams are currently ranked at second and fifth in the six team table. “Both senior teams are in premiere and not a lot of clubs have had two teams in the premier grade with only six teams in that competition. It is a great achievement in our first year of development” said Tropex organiser Kath Nathan. The idea for the teams started as a one-off World Masters team where they won bronze. They were also acknowledged for ‘most stylish uniform’ during the tournament. So rather than see the uniforms packed away in a box,
Kath approached the team managers about starting the academy. With a focus on the further development of players and officials and a goal to improve netball logistics, they decided to compete in the competition. The year seven team came about as a way to “give back to our members by picking up their daughters,” said Kath. “It can be seen as a type of recruitment for the future of the academy, inspiring young girls to continue to play, giving them skills that will improve their performance and challenge their knowledge.” “The future of netball within Northern Wairoa is very promising and Tropex Netball Academy will only contribute to existing clubs by setting the standard of netball in this region” said Kath. ¢
p Western Sharks players Justin Friedrich, Trent Bradley, Matt Matich and Jonetani Mateiwai
Along with players Justin Friedrich and Jonetani Mateiwai, the trio are part of the 40+ squad. Fellow teammate Trent Bradley has also been selected to play in the Northland Academy team. “It’s definitely good to see local players getting a chance to show their stuff off, especially coming up through club rugby to represent our area and go on to play for Northland,” said Western Sharks coach, Mark Russell. Matt who is currently on a two-year contract with Northland Rugby said it was “awesome” to have two of his teammates join him in the squad.
He has also made the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians team which kicks off the international Lions tour on June 3 at Toll Stadium. “I found out the week before it was announced and was pretty stoked. I was gutted when I missed out on Super Rugby so I was really hoping to make this team and get the exposure,” he said. Other Kaipara locals also made the squad including: Ross Wright, Wellsford; Dan Hawkins, Otamatea; Jordan Hyland, Otamatea; Matty Wright, Wellsford and Whiria Meltzer, Wellsford. ¢

Deceased Estate. This farm is located only 13km east of Dargaville on Pukehuia Road. Farmed for 60 years by its previous owner, it provides evidence of a lifetime’s work and is now in need of your skills. It offers a useful balance of river flats and gentle hill country while stands of mature native bush provide good shelter for stock. It comprises of four titles, each with road access and three of which have power. A quiet rural road provides easy access right through the centre of the farm and there are numerous road gates. There are two sets of cattle yards and a full sized cattle crush in one set and a sturdy head bail suitable for bulls in the other. There is also a disused herringbone cowshed where there is power, electric fence unit, and together with the round yard and hay shed they combine to enhance the cattle yard facility. There is an improved old-style villa and two empty cottages that would require some work to become habitable. With its gentle contour, sheltered aspect and handy location, this property offers you the opportunity to farm it, fix it up or split it up. Don’t miss your chance! Hospice fundraiser
u by Anna Harding
The ‘Storyline Festival of New Zealand Children’s Writers and Illustrators’ came to Kaipara last week.
p Arapohue school students and illustrator Terry Fitzgibbo
Over a five day Northland tour, Kaipara schools from Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa and Arapohue were selected for a visit this year after applying online. The festival was established 23 years ago to bring children together with their favourite literary heroes, to celebrate and promote them, and to encourage a lifelong love of books in children. Illustrator Terry Fitzgibbon

came to Arapohue Primary School for a presentation to 23 students. He talked about how he loved drawing as a child and encouraged the kids to “keep drawing, keep practising, keeping looking. Draw what you see and what you like.” He then read from one of his recently illustrated books “Fearless Fred and the Storm” which was written by Maureen Sudlow from Dargaville. ¢

p The fourth annual Hospice Kaipara Mother’s Day Poker Car Run went ahead last Sunday, with around 70 people in 48 vintage vehicles participating, to raise funds for Hospice. The run started at Harding Park in Dargaville and finished at the Paparoa Thirsty Tui, with stops at the Tokatoka pub, Ruawai Rugby Club and Tinopai along the way. Fundraiser Pamela Barton said “it was fantastic, really good — everybody enjoyed it and we are looking forward to next year.”
