The chair of the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee, the group that acts as stewards of Kai Iwi Lakes and its surrounds, has quit in protest against a plan he says could spell extinction for one of New Zealand’s rarest creatures. Councillor Jonathan Larsen has resigned effective immediately, leaving Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith to front the two remaining meetings of his tenure. In a detailed letter to the mayor, Councillor Larsen explained his reasons for the shock departure, centred around the fate of the dune lake galaxiids (DLG) — a fish only found in the Kaipara’s dune lake biome. He opines that evidence shows that trout, introduced into the lakes for anglers to catch, suppress the population of another introduced fish, the
gambusia, which devours the galaxiids if left unchecked. “Trout release into Lake Kai Iwi was discontinued in 2001 at the request of the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee and iwi,” says Councillor Larsen. “This lake is now completely overwhelmed with gambusia, and DLG are now apparently extinct in this lake.” In 2020 and 2021, Fish and Game’s requests to introduce new trout populations into neighbouring Lake Waikare and Lake Taharoa were rejected. Trout populations in these lakes are now

likely to have reached zero. Galaxias levels have been confirmed as ‘low’ at the previous meeting of the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee, and Councillor Larsen believes this is a precursor to their extinction. “I do not wish to be party to the potential unnecessary and avoidable extinction of an indigenous species but am powerless to change the direction being taken by council and the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee,” said Mr Larsen, tendering his immediate resignation. ¢

ELECTRIC POWER TRUST
The deadline for making submissions on the 2022 Northpower Limited Ownership Review has closed. In total, there were 131 submissions during the 2022 Northpower Ownership Review, of which 36 were dual submissions, making a total of 167 submitters, according to the Northpower Electric Power Trust (NEPT). All submitters were in favour of ‘Option A’, which is to retain the Northpower Ltd Shares in the Trust.
p A new balance tank for Mangawhai’s wastewater treatment plant is one step closer to completion, with the first precast concrete slabs poured for the tank structure. Other recent works include the base pour for a micro scrubber, a piece of wastewater treatment equipment that will treat the odour from the new inlet works. The tank will increase the capacity and efficiency of wastewater in the fastgrowing town and is planned to be finished by early 2023. Its $5.11 million cost has been paid for by developer contributions and those currently connected to Mangawhai wastewater.

Climate change policy unites north Northpower u by Andy Bryenton
The Kaipara District Council has voted to adopt a new joint strategy for combating climate change, taking a proactive stance alongside its fellow elected members from Whangārei and the Far North. Two years in the making, via the Climate Adaptation Te Tai Tokerau (CATT) working group, the strategy seeks to homogenise the response to the threat of climate change and sea-level rise across the north, with all councils having their say. Reminder about service line safety on farm Rural Northland landowners are reminded of their responsibilities around the upkeep of powerlines, poles and underground cables that supply electricity from the Northpower electricity networks to their property. These service lines are the overhead or underground powerlines that generally run from a property boundary, road or street to your house or other farm infrastructure. Service lines are owned by the landowner, so the responsibility of upkeep sits with the landowner.
“Have a look at your service lines and think – does it look right? If you have any concerns at all give us a call” says Northpower Customer Excellence Manager Rachel Wansbone.
Northpower also offers free safety disconnects to landowners who need to clear vegetation around their lines. In case of fire, phone 111 immediately to report the location.
“It is worth keeping on top of any need for repairs before the situation becomes dangerous and expensive to fix and to minimise the risk of someone being electrocuted. Work on your service line does not need to be completed by Northpower, you can use your electrician or a contractor, we can put you in touch with the right people to help.”
The obligations of land owners and safety sentiments are backed by Federated Farmers Northland President Colin Hannah.
“We regularly do safety inspections on our network lines and if we find any unsafe service lines, we’ll contact the property owner and let them know what work is needed to make them safe. In some situations the lines are so unsafe that we have no choice but to immediately disconnect them. This is something we would like to avoid by helping ensure that service lines are kept in good condition by the land owners.
Northpower are asking rural property owners to regularly check their service lines to ensure they are in good condition, and do not pose a safety hazard or fire risk. If unsure of the condition of service lines, people should phone their electrician to have the lines professionally assessed. Things to look out for on service lines are: Poles and cross arms – older wooden poles and cross arms can degrade over time. Is the pole thinning and cracking? Is it still standing straight? Cross arms can look thinner in places as the wood rots, or become crooked and less secure on the pole.
Fire can sometimes be caused by trees or bamboo touching powerlines. Property owners must have trees and vegetation within four metres of Northpower’s overhead powerlines removed by an authorised arborist.
Insulators – are insulators in place for all lines and are the lines sitting on top of the insulators or have they fallen off onto the cross arms.
Other things to look out for:
Is vegetation in the lines, which can be a safety hazard.
Call Northpower on 0800 10 40 40 for advice if you have any concerns.
General enquiries: 0800 66 78 47
If your service line has leaning poles, low hanging lines, crooked cross arms or shows signs of damage, phone us on 0800 667 847.

Frayed or sagging lines break easily, especially in high winds.
“I recently worked with Northpower to get electricity disconnected so I could clear trees under lines on my boundary and across a paddock to my pump house. I was well aware it was my obligation but also in my interests from a safety perspective - for myself and any contractors,” says Mr Hannah. “We will be working hard throughout the year to spread the world to Northlanders working the land to reinforce the electricity safety messages being put out by Northpower and Top Energy. When you consider farmers can have multiple electricity connections to assets like woolsheds, cowsheds, water pumps, implement sheds, homes and workers quarters, there is plenty we need to keep an eye on.”
Look for signs of rotten wood on crossarms, check whether your poles are rotting at the base.
Keep trees away from powerlines - they can cause anything from flickering to a total outage.
Check the point where the service line enters your house - is the line old, repaired or frayed?

Memories preserved
New catch limits for anglers
u by Andy Bryenton
u by Andy Bryenton
The Falls Estate is more than just a place where older citizens can enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable retirement lifestyle; it’s also a place bursting with knowledge and memories of times past.
New rules and limits have come into place on May 5, determining the number of fish which can be taken home by recreational anglers in Northland.
Now a selection of reminiscences has been collected into a single volume there with the help of local writer Trudy McKnight, chronicling the eventful lives of the residents. With wit, wisdom and real historical relevance, these true stories have been collected under the title Memories — Reflections on the Past. “This is a quality publication of more than 200 pages, recording the life stories of 21 residents at the Falls Estate,” says village p Not just recording memories, but making fresh ones; manager Marie Annandale. here, Cynthia Scott, Arthur Hori and Lynley Horne work “Stories were compiled over in the village’s thriving garden a 13-month period by making recordings, dictating notes, exploring old garden’ and simpler times. For others, coming from overseas, stories covering life’s ups and downs, memories include roaming the bombed trials and tribulations. Rules for daily limits on recreationally caught finfish now include some species that previously had no limit, Oceans and Fisheries Minister David Parker announced last week. Of the entire marine biota of finfish found in Kiwi waters, only 43 have historically been subject to bag limits. Now effectively, all 1,000 identified species are covered in a bid to curb overfishing. “I instructed my officials to review the daily bag limits for recreationally caught finfish following reports of people taking hundreds of pink maomao on one day last year,” said David Parker. “Some of these species outside of bag limits weren’t previously targeted by recreational fishers. However, there has been a change in what people now catch and eat, and the rules need to be updated to reflect this.” The biggest change is the imposition of a 20 fish bag limit in total for all finfish regardless of species. Finfish species with individual bag limits will also be included in the daily total, meaning that it’s possible to reach a quota of one species and then still catch examples of another, up to the 20 fish limit.
Life at the Falls Estate means enjoying so many different activities in the village with fellow residents and spending time to enjoy the things you love.
Trudy McKnight and Marie Annandale
Over the last year 21 residents living at The Falls Estate took part in writing their life stories and Trudy McKnight collaborated the book “Memories Reflections on the Past”. This book is available for purchase from The Falls Estate Office or Kamo Book Inn. Enquiries and e-mail orders to: mcknight.trudy@gmail.com
p Oceans and Fisheries Minister David Parker has unveiled new limits for recreational anglers
This limit exists only for the North Island; for the South Island, the cap is set at 30 fish. Baitfish are not included in the total. Opponents of the change opine that illicit commercial trawling by foreign vessels poses more of a threat to fish stocks than recreational angling, however, the Oceans and Fisheries Minister says it is a necessary step. “This puts an end to excessive take, which could affect the sustainability of a species and also makes the rules more consistent across the country and easier to follow,” said Minister Parker. We have a group of residents who volunteer their expertise, time, and hard work to ensure fresh vegetables are available to fellow residents all year around from the extensive vegetable gardens established in the Falls’ Village precinct. Summer season sees lettuces, tomatoes, beans, courgettes, cucumbers, pumpkins, and potatoes. The staples, cabbages, caulis, broccoli, and silver beet are grown all year around.
Using the tools and equipment from the ‘Men’s Shed,’ this year high frames set in concrete and covered with netting were made preventing the birds creating havoc eating their share and cut down the white butterfly population. A small shed funded by the Trudy McKnight, Russell Porter gardeners was erected to store gardening tools and materials. and Pauline van Eybergen A shade house is used for raising seedlings. Funding for major materials – the frames and netting – costing over one thousand dollars, was provided by the Resident’s Committee using profits from residents twice weekly, ‘happy hour’ and various social functions.

Gym for the brain u by Andy Bryenton
Doctors and scientists have made interesting discoveries in recent years about the value of art to the health of the human brain, likening crafty and creative activities to a ‘workout for the grey matter’. According to Dr Bruce Miller, a behavioural neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Centre, while brains inevitably age, creative abilities do not necessarily deteriorate. “Actually, the ageing brain responds well to art by allowing the brain’s two hemispheres to work more in tandem. This ability to use one’s creativity throughout a lifetime and the impact of crystallised intelligence gained from the years of accumulated knowledge and life experiences, help to cultivate the ageing, creative brain,” says Dr Miller. One theory is that creating art, whether it’s a painting, a song, a sculpture, a knitted cardigan or ceramic pot,
stimulates endorphins and reinforces ‘good’ neural pathways. That is because crafting things with our hands is the big advantage humans have over other creatures; we’re ‘hard wired’ to want to create. Combine this with a brain that can envision, imagine and dream, and you get masterpieces like those of the

“Neurological research shows that making art can improve cognitive functions by producing both new neural pathways and thicker, stronger dendrites,” says Dr Barbara Bagan, a geriatric medicine expert. “Thus, ar t enhances cognitive reserve, helping the brain actively compensate for pathology by using more efficient brain networks or alternative brain strategies.” In simple terms, creating art, even if we consider ourselves bad at drawing or painting, works like lifting weights does for muscles. Thicker, stronger nerve structures in the brain can resist ageing, just as keeping fit can help with the longevity of the body.

A warm welcome for Jack Frost u by Amy Fifita
It’s getting colder, and there are actions to be taken to make the transition from the warm-rayed Kiwi summer to the chilly winter easier. There are renovations that can be done in autumn to keep your house dry and warm in the coming months. Planning ahead is beneficial, especially since it is already getting nippy. So what are your options before the cold bites? Central heating or heat pumps will help you cosy up this winter. Central heating spreads heat throughout the whole house. Although heat pumps are more widely used in New Zealand and are known to be more cost-effective than an electric heater. Now is a good time to think about insulating your home. It is a durable and long-lasting material that doesn’t need to be maintained unless it has become damaged. The added feature is that it does not require you to empty your pockets to your electricity company. The government’s Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme makes underfloor and ceiling insulation and heat pumps a viable solution for the oncoming winter chills. The grants will cover up to 80 per cent of the cost of making your home more comfortable. Like insulation, curtains play a part in keeping in the warmth. There is a range of options for materials such as wool, polyester and thick cotton, to name a few. This simple addition will stop the heat from getting outside. Winter brings wet weather, too, so start thinking about how to keep your house
that can seal gaps up, giving you a secure house. These minor renovations either decrease moisture and draughts or help retain heat in your home. Most of these options are reasonable to achieve before the start of winter. So get it done before Old Man Winter and his buddy Jack come to play with your comfort and kidnap you from the heat. ¢

It means airing your house out during the day, ensuring areas needing to be sealed are done and running a dehumidifier. Those with older, classic homes built early last century may well have fireplace infrastructure hidden behind later refurbishments, during the era when older fireplaces were seen as a liability, and electric heating was the current vogue. There’s also the possibility that an existing fireplace or even a truly antique wood-fired cooker is in situ and requires some lateral thinking to replace as part of your renovation. Of course, when dealing with fire, even contained and tamed in a hearth, safety is the first consideration. A consultation with a fireplace installation expert is a good place to begin if you have existing blocked-off fireplaces or chimney works that could be resurrected to their former glory. Traditional standards and materials were less exacting than those of today. By the same token, things have come a long way in terms of compact and efficient fireplace replacements to fill large brick-lined spaces or replace rusting old fireboxes. Perhaps the most important consideration is the chimney itself. Brick

structures and metal ones alike bear the brunt of the weather and should be checked for stability before a new flue is piped through. Weathertightness is another consideration when opening up sealed-off fireplace spaces or installing a new fireplace where older equipment once stood. The good news is that options for a replacement can fit almost any decor style, from those blending effortlessly with the Victorian-era charm of a colonial fireplace surround to art-deco tiles or thoroughly modern designs. Local metalworkers and engineers may even be able to refurbish free-standing character fireplaces, such as the kettle-look copperclad pieces beloved of the 1960s and 1970s interior decorators, ones now retro centrepieces. Efficiency is also a factor with modern fires. Many older coal-burning grates that were closed off in the middle of the last century can not be replaced with pellet burners or more fuel-friendly wood burners. It’s even possible to replace the cooking ranges in colonial-era kitchens with fully functional wood stoves freshly made with modern materials and technology. These can heat water, bake bread, cook those old-fashioned roast

dinners of yesteryear and make a rustic but functional showpiece that adds value to a villa or farmhouse restoration. All fireplace replacements require the correct paperwork and installation by a professional, so talk to your local expert soon to begin the process and explore your options. ¢

FARMING
The ‘grandfather’ of Kiwi tractors u by Andy Bryenton
Politician, historian, author and farmer Robert McNab has many claims to fame; however, his purchase of New Zealand’s first tractor is a milestone in rural life. Robert McNab was an extraordinary figure in early New Zealand. Born near Knapdale, close to modern-day Invercargill, he was the only surviving child of a large family. He confirmed his powerful intellect when he became Dux of Invercargill District High School in 1879.

Robert trained in the law but remained interested in farming, and his progressive outlook and insight into history gave him a desire for modernisation. Fast forward to 1902, 120 years ago, when news of a novel new device caught Mr McNab’s attention. He had previously looked at traction engines and steam tractors as a way to improve farming efficiency. During the Boer War in South Africa, the British Army had experimented for the first time with internal combustion. Now that technology had come through into farming, with the invention of the Ivel three-wheeler, a kerosene-powered tractor that promised to revolutionise farm work in the United Kingdom. It wasn’t just the farming power of the Ivel or its use of a side-mounted PTO wheel for running threshers, stationary mills and crushers. It was its durability, which Robert McNab knew any machine tackling the New Zealand pastureland would require. It was all fine and good, he reasoned, to buy a new kind of tractor if you lived near to the works in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, but what if it broke down in Gore or Gisborne? The commissioning of an Ivel as an armoured ambulance in 1904, and its
p Daniel Albone invented the first internal combustion tractor in 1902, and just two years later one of his three-wheelers became the first in New Zealand
successful testing in Canada, convinced McNab of its toughness. He purchased an Ivel in 1904, and soon he was the owner of the first internal combustion tractor in New Zealand. The Ivel was a world first in other ways. One of the first boxer-style horizontallyopposed engines with two spark plugs and the first tractor with inflatable tyres. In
fact, a single tyre, the front steering wheel boasted a thin, motorcycle-sized tube to help keep it rolling straight when the two steel, cleated rear wheels deployed their eight horsepower. Robert McNab’s Ivel weighed just under one and a half tonnes, making it much lighter than the monster traction engines of the day and more fit to work on small farms.

The modern kitchen is the centre of the home, easily moving through to a separate lounge which opens out to alfresco living on sprawling decks accessing three sides of the home.
