Peanuts taste test time u by Paul Campbell

A crucial test of the viability of peanuts as a Kaipara growth crop of the future is taking place this week when 20 kilograms of peanuts harvested from near Dargaville become 10 jars of peanut butter to undergo a stringent taste test.

Farmers and staff from Kaipara Kai, the Ministry for Primary Industries and the makers of Pic’s Peanut Butter will be anxiously awaiting the outcome after the nuts were processed at the Pic’s plant in Nelson. Some 60 kilograms of peanuts were harvested, with the bulk of the crop going to Plant and Food Research for evaluation as a future Kaipara crop, while 20 kilograms went to Nelson with Pic’s CEO, Stuart Macintosh. There, they were dried and processed, ready for making into product, and Mr Macintosh says this required some thinking outside the square. “With our small sample, our production machinery was designed for very big product runs, so we actually had to design and scale down to make a smaller version to grind the Kaipara harvest separately.” The product, soon ready for tasting, will provide a good indication of quality, although those behind the project will be planting a variety of peanut strains in further growing trials aimed at creating a totally home-grown peanut product. Plant and Food Research business manager Declan Graham hopes to see “quite a few hectares planted, sown and yielded and some infrastructure and an alternative cropping option for the folk and the farmers of Northland.” Kaipara Kai’s Greg Hall says, and the district has a “good opportunity and fertile land, to increase the variety of food that we grow.” Declan Graham says peanuts should not actually ‘pay peanuts’. “With irrigation, if we’re getting six or seven tonnes per hectare. That’s 4,500 jars of peanut butter per hectare — that’s what we’d be looking at.” ¢

p Selwyn Park School, Kaipara District Council and Dargaville Rotary Club joined forces to help out mother nature last week, taking to the slopes of Pou Tu O Te Rangi/Harding Park with 500 native trees in hand. KDC supplied the seedlings, and the Rotarians and pupils got together to put in the shovel work. When the job was complete, a sausage sizzle lunch capped off a day to be proud of, in which the reserve was enhanced, students learned about conservation, and the council found a home for 500 new trees to provide shade and oxygen in years to come.

p Kind weather made for a good turnout of riders at the Silver Pine Pony Club’s ribbon day in Dargaville recently. Thirty-one riders on horses and ponies turned out for a friendly day of competition in round-the-ring and jumping classes. “The way the ribbon day is run, is by having different rounds where the judges are looking at specific things like rider conformation, horse presentation, rider ability. In the afternoon, there were two rings with different jumping heights and various rounds where the riders were judged,” said club member Kristin Loewinger Hayes. “We hope to make this an annual event. There is an upcoming AGM on May 27 at 6.30pm in the Dargaville Town Hall. The Silver Pine Pony Club is on Facebook.”

School transport by the book u by Andy Bryenton

Kaihu area parents sending their children to schools outside the local primary school’s Transport Entitlement Zone have seen their schedules affected by a new necessity to obey the ‘letter of the law’ regarding zoning.

p A state curriculum primary school with a multicultural roll, and a strong sense of community, Kaihu Valley School has been forced to act by an MOE oversight

School bus operator Ritchies Transport issued letters to several students riding the bus to Dargaville schools, informing them that from the start of term three, they would no longer be able to transport them through the Kaihu Valley School TEZ. “As a professional transport operator, we have to obey the letter of the law,” said Northland area manager Tony Manga. “This decision is not one which has been made by Ritchies, but we must abide by the rules.” Kaihu Valley principal Sonia Simeon says that a recent incident resulted in official oversight from the Ministry of Education, who insist that

things ‘must be done by the book.’ “The situation began with two students who chose to come to Kaihu Valley School instead of Aranga. “Subsequently, the principal of that school contacted the ministry to enforce transport zoning regulations,” says Ms Simeon. She and the board of trustees chair Turo Te Rore agree; existing agreements and arrangements in place may have continued if it were not for this official level of oversight and involvement. They now opine that ministry oversight demands that they follow the transport rules. Hence, they were forced to order Ritchies to serve notice on 25 out of area students. ¢

Solar farm land secured u by Andy Bryenton

Lodestone Energy, a solar farm operator, has purchased 500 hectares of farmland to construct the nation’s biggest array of solar panels, with one of the five installations coming to Dargaville. When finished, the photovoltaic array will power 55,000 homes or 150,000 electric cars similar to Nissan’s all-electric Leaf. Farming can continue around and under the panels, which do not affect livestock. Lodestone CEO Gary Holden is a Kiwi-Canadian with 35 years in the energy p Lodestone has purchased 500 hectares as part of a plan to bring solar power to the mainstream grid; Dargaville is sector behind him. OPINION

Who’s listening? u by Jane Gray

2020 was the year we listened to those telling us to be kind, support local, use the tracker, and get tested. We listened. Now let’s talk about some that aren’t listening or doing what is needed. Our banks, or the lack thereof. Reduced hours, open to the public or closed doors altogether. Why? Is this cost-saving for them, and are these savings passed on to the consumer? Probably not. Is there any interest in listening to their customers regarding the removal of cheques in favour of internet banking? I have spoken to a number of people with elderly parents, and they are very concerned about how they will manage. There is fear and mistrust of taking finances online; some don’t have the skills to manage the systems or the technology required. Others lack the funds to have everything necessary to do online banking. Will the banks supply everything needed since they are pushing everyone in this direction? That would be an unequivocal no! The BNZ had an end of year profit, September 2020, of $762 million. Yes, it was a decrease of 25% on the year before but still

a very large profit, especially in a Covid environment. Is the customer going to see any benefits of this profit in the form of reduced banking fees or increased interest rates on savings? No! Politicians seem to have forgotten how to listen to the voters. Numerous referendums seem to have gone nowhere since the elections. For instance, the euthanasia referendum, where is it, what’s happening? We have a government that neither listens or shows good leadership outside of a crisis. The travesty that is Oranga Tamariki and its chronically disgraceful handling of whanau in crisis, or the building of low-cost housing (or should I say the lack thereof), both would have been talked about at length by those at the coal face. Did they get listened to? No! So I ask again, who is listening? Not the decision-makers, that’s for sure. We want your feedback, email info@thelifestyler.co.nz or post to PO Box 474, Dargaville.

Dog breeder Ruawai’s cooperates with SPCA scholarship winner

u by Paul Campbell

The Northland SPCA is pleased to have been able to successfully work with a Kaipara breeder to rehome dozens of dogs, following calls from concerned citizens about a so-called ‘puppy mill’ or intensive dog breeding operation.

A top Kaipara student has received one of eight $3,000 scholarships allocated by the Northland Regional Council to support students studying or training in areas aligned to work the council does in the environmental, economic or community resilience fields.

In an official statement, SPCA officers confirmed that the organisation had first visited the property near Dargaville last year. Inspectors discovered a large dog breeding operation. The SPCA found no breaches to the Animal Welfare Act and says all the animals were well fed and sheltered. SPCA National Inspectorate manager Alan Wilson says with the high demand and asking price for dogs; there needs to be more regulation across the dog breeding industry. “In this particular case, no laws were broken. However, it would no doubt have been difficult to look after so many dogs, and we are pleased we have been able to rehome most of them,” says Mr Wilson. “We understand the public interest and concern from the local community in this case, but we want to reiterate that the owner was fully cooperative and has done the best thing for the dogs.” During the weeks and months that followed, SPCA worked with the breeder to gain ownership of more than 100 dogs and puppies. The owner was fully cooperative, and the breeding operation is now closed. The dogs have been rehomed. Briar Marbeck of the SPCA says that breaches of animal welfare are best

A positive outcome was nevertheless negotiated. “All animal welfare concerns should be reported to SPCA by calling your local centre to provide a description of the animal involved, why you believe there’s been cruelty or neglect, the animal’s location and the name of the person you believe may be responsible,” says Ms Marbeck. ¢

Harbour clean-up work underway u by Paul Campbell

The $200 million Kaipara Moana Remediation project with more than 20 million trees and other natives to be planted around the harbour for the next decade is underway for this year after a planting day last weekend. Otamatea HarbourCare secretary and Kaipara Moana Working Group member, Mark Vincent, said the project near Paparoa also involved Otamatea Weed Control Group, Pest Free Peninsulas and Lions. “It was a very successful day with 1,500 plants in the ground.” He said it was notable that some volunteers came from five generations of local farming families, as well as recent arrivals in Kaipara, including some who could measure their time here in just weeks. ”I think five weeks was the newest, so I think our local community is gaining some diversity.” Mr Vincent said Kaipara Moana Remediation is the country’s biggest harbour restoration programme — across 6,000 square kilometres of land bordering the waterway. Otamatea HarbourCare has led to the planting of 120,000 trees since its inception. “Riparian planting will be carried out by other organisations around the harbour with landowners including farming and, importantly, forestry — working towards improving harbour health.” The initial Kaipara riparian planting catchment work will be expanded in the years ahead with native trees and plants on an estimated 800 square kilometres of highly-erodible land.

The government-funded scheme is designed to boost the harbour’s health by slashing sediment from the land in a catchment-wide remediation initiative also involving iwi, central and local government and the wider community to halve the 700,000 tonnes of sediment flowing into the harbour each year. Two thousand tonnes of sediment a day flow into the Kaipara, and some of that has also been targeted by Otamatea resident Albie Paton, who is seeking support for a large-scale dredging operation for the Northern Wairoa River. “All the way up the river, there are many hundreds of acres of silt banks created by run-off from the land further up. “Start at the northern end of Summer Road at Hukatere and go all the way to Donovan’s Bluff, south of Tokatoka, as well as just north at Waiharara to the Monganui River south of Tangiteroria. “Let’s talk to the Dutch and other north European countries and seek their advice and technology. A lot of land in Europe has been preserved from the sea.” Mr Paton added that the silt came from the land. “Let’s return it back to the land and help save one of New Zealand’s great food bowls.” ¢

Ecotourism leads ‘reset’ u by Andy Bryenton

Ecological tourism and regional tourism development both received a boost in early May with the announcement of a fees waiver by the Department of Conservation and a reset fund from the government. “We will roll out a $200 million Tourism Communities: Support, Recovery and Reset Plan between now and 2023,” said Tourism Minister Stuart Nash at a parliamentary press conference last week. “It will invest in new programmes like small business suppor t, tourism infrastructure, the conservation estate, Maori p The future of ecotourism looks bright for Kaipara, an area of development, economic and great natural beauty but little pre-Covid engagement with regional development, and international guests; it’s time to change this mental wellbeing support.” At the same time, the acting Minister to the extraordinary circumstances for Conservation, Dr Ayesha Verrall, created by Covid-19. Highway speed review for Kaipara u by Andy Bryenton

Public input is being sought as the New Zealand Transport Agency looks at speed limit reductions on 11 sections of state highway in Northland, including Kaipara. This move will affect the entirety of State Highway 12 from Br ynderwyn to Dargaville and all of State Highway 14 from Whangarei to Dargaville and on through the Waipoua forest to Opononi and beyond. A year after Covid-19 lockdowns first struck the business sector, things are rosier than predicted, but there’s still one key factor that all of the local business leaders agree on. The ‘shop local’ message has carried us through some tough times, but it needs to be embraced on a higher level if business is to truly boom in our small towns, say respondents to a ‘vox pop’ of Dargaville entrepreneurs and professionals. While the average person on the street is keen to help out, and many local shops and tradespeople have seen a boost in small jobs, there’s still a lingering perception that larger contracts or business-to-business transactions can be acceptably outsourced, sidestepping the ‘shop local’ ethos. Another bugbear for some traders is the rise of online ‘click and collect’ schemes that see suppliers deliberately bypass their local stockists for quick internet sales; suppliers who then expect the locals to provide comprehensive after-sales service. Schemes such as these were established, usually by multinational manufacturers, to keep their own business afloat during times and in countries when Covid put a stop to all store-front trade. It’s time for them to pack up and bring commerce back to the main street.

The third major change that could help business thrive as we leave the Covid era behind comes from the government. Many business leaders are looking closely at the forthcoming budget, hoping for measures like those enacted by our Australian counterparts. Their recent fiscal package for 2021 announced more than $70 million in tax breaks for small to medium business, and targeted pay rises coupled with tax relief for industries with historically low pay, such as health care workers, aged carers and front line supermarket staff. Many businesses here support wage rises as a stimulus for their staff to stay on the team and spend locally but hope for similar tax and regulatory relief to remain in the good side of the ledger. In cold figures, ANZ Bank’s monthly business confidence survey for this May looks robust, with a nine-point jump in business confidence and a 10-point leap in firms’ own activity expectations. However, to translate through to the main street, a firming up of the ‘support your locals’ message needs to run through from the council chamber to the boardroom to the wallets of the average citizen, making all of us better off. ¢

u by Andy Bryenton

The SuperGold Card has been a Kiwi institution for above-65s since 2007, providing discounts and services all over the country. These keep growing, and there’s a new way to keep track of them. With the rise and ubiquity of mobile phones, the government has launched an app available through iTunes, Google Play and via supergold.govt.nz. This smartphone-based program helps to identify nearby deals accessible to gold cardholders, some of which are dependent on certain days and times. In Dargaville, for example, Countdown supermarkets offer a five per cent discount to gold cardholders on Tuesdays. The new app tracks such specials and can help plan for cheaper grocery runs, as well as the best places and times to get deals on fuel, accommodation, dining and other services. There are 215 large and well-known companies that provide gold card discounts, including nationwide chains of hardware stores, petrol stations, optometrists and garden centres. Travel, accommodation and motorhome rental businesses offer discounts, along with the Cook Strait Ferry, making it easier to see more of New Zealand. In a move that’s handy to fit in with the new app, many leading mobile phone companies also offer a discount. The website at supergold.govt.nz also contains a function to find local businesses who offer a gold card special or two. Clicking on the tab for ‘offers near me’ displays a map of your town with local discounts floating over the shop where they are offered. Dargaville, for example, has 24 of these,

Tech skills for business growth u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s Seed co-working space will host a tech conference for business owners next week, sharing ways to boost profits and visibility. The travelling TechWeek Northland Roadshow has added Dargaville to its itinerary after visiting other local centres such as Kerikeri and Whangarei. On May 28, a range of seminars will be on offer, covering everything from bookkeeping software implementation through to establishing a strong digital presence online. Presentations will be given by coaching professional Sarah Greener, Rachel Paterson of Conduit Bookkeeping, Stuart Thompson of Live Wire Media, IT and computer specialist Andrew Fergus, and Simple Life Social Media innovator Brie Timings. “To answer the need to move our businesses into the future, the TechWeek Northland Roadshow will revolve around accelerating business growth through tech,” says this assembled team of professionals. “We invite you to join some of the leading local businesses in Northland as they discuss the tools and strategies to bring your business into the future.” The seminar roadshow will take place in the Dargaville Community Development Board’s Seed co-working

Olympic-sized enthusiasm u by Andy Bryenton

Mangawhai Activity Zone hosted Olympic hopefuls in the newly included sport of skateboarding last week, alongside a world record-holding Kiwi creation, the world’s largest skateboard.

p Umberto Skinner ‘drops in’ from the deck of the world’s largest skateboard, a daring stunt to launch the Olympic road trip

Bowman Hansen and Matt Markland, tipped as world-leading skaters who will fly the flag for New Zealand when the Olympic Games debut a new format in Paris 2024, were on-site to meet a large crowd of young skaters and their families. Surfing is also going to be included on the Olympic roster when the tournament hits France. Patrons to the event could sign a Kiwi-themed surfboard with messages of goodwill. “The games is seeking a new audience of young viewers, so in order to get them engaged with the games, new sports have been added,” says the skate tour’s public relations manager Erin McKenzie. “We’re touring our big board around the nation, visiting all of the ‘big’ landmarks, such as the L&P bottle in Paeroa and the big carrot in Ohakune, while promoting our team.” It’s a big board indeed. Crafted by Unique Creative in Silverdale, the deck is large enough for Mangawhai’s resident pro-skater Umberto Skinner to

skate on top of, even dropping in from the authentically grip-taped deck and into the MAZ skate park. That’s quite a stunt, as the board is larger than a flat-deck rail car, and each of its wheels is fitted with the biggest Mickey Thompson dragster tyres in production. It’s a working, rolling board that is set to cinch the Guinness record. While Bowman and Matt talked to local skaters and Barfoot and Thompson put on a free sausage sizzle. Children played underneath and around the huge skateboard while their parents talked about the changing face of sports. “In my day, the Olympics was all javelin and running races,” said one spectator. “Now, this is what my kids are into, and I suppose we move with the times.” It’s a move that could net New Zealand more Olympic gold; our surfers and skateboarders are considered to be some of the top contenders for when Paris 2024 kicks off. ¢

When the world held its breath u by Andy Bryenton

This article is supposed to be about getting stuck into autumn chores before winter gets the drop on us all. It’s certainly time for it. Instead, it’s become a story about degrees of separation. There’s plenty to do outside, with lawns growing well, branches to prune back, firewood to stack and cut and one or two troublesome trees to wrangle before storm winds bring them down on otherwise innocent cars and buildings. For many of us, this means it’s time to consider new machinery for the job. Technology has come a long way recently, and upgrades to the mower, chainsaw or brush cutter are never regretted. This year, however, it pays to move fast. That’s because there’s a limited amount of new stock on the showroom floor, everywhere. Right now, top brands are on hand, but supply chains have finally reached the ‘bump’ caused by Covid, and it promises a season of disappointment for those who are less than decisive. Think of it like stubbing your toe in the dark. Your foot connects with some benighted solid lump, and your mind comprehends that there’s pain on the way — there may have been an audible crunch. However, it takes a while for your drowsy nerves to reroute the message to your brain. The global supply chain is like this. When Covid hit, there was a nice

p A note to still be aware that in stores, models are limited while the world continues to get back on its feet

surplus set out in car factory yards and warehouses. Now it’s used up, and manufacturing is only just ramping up to where it should be. That is exacerbated by the global nature of trade and the general confusion in shipping. There’s some sympathy to be had there. Some of those sailors have been moving containers without a foot on dry land since Wuhan reported its first

sniffles. The upshot, however, is that some manufacturers have all their steel parts built, engines made, paintwork airbrushed but are waiting for a box of 10,000 solenoids out of India. Perhaps it’s a case of half a million fuel valves stuck in a 40-foot container somewhere off the shore of Holland. What it means is that this year, sales which say ‘hurry, limited offer’ are not kidding.

It also means that we here in New Zealand, feeling the chill in the air and contemplating a few weekends of yard work, need to strike now to nab a new model for the chores ahead or commit to an overhaul and repair scheme for the tools we have. The situation will iron itself out, but right now, the supply chain has a lot of plates to pick up and get spinning again. Plan accordingly. ¢

When the original hot hatchbacks of the 1980s hit the scene, they were a breath of fresh air due to being a new concept. Small, agile, easy to park and with a grin-engaging turn of speed, cars like the Golf GTi and Toyota Starlet delivered economical thrills. They also delivered economical horsepower. Looking back from the present day, when three hundred horses is seen as the benchmark for a sporty machine, the hundred or so ponies packed under the hoods of those early hatchbacks looks positively wimpy. On paper, at least. Take a spin, and you’ll still find yourself smiling ear to ear. Why? Power to weight ratio. That is why the news of a Can-Am Commander side-by-side off-roader with a 100hp Rotax engine is on a par with advice that chocolate now helps you lose weight. When it comes to having fun, a small, light and nimble machine with 100 horses to unleash is going to do the business like very little else. Now, to be certain, Can-Am has also developed the 2021 Commander for serious stuff. It’s factory-fresh with the biggest cargo bed in its class, and the ability to tow 900kg comes as standard. Can-Am engineers have made this version of the Commander safer, more sturdy, more rigid, and more featurepacked than any before. Most of all, though, you can imagine the lab-coated and flat-capped folks with

their rulers and pencils waiting to finish designing the new Commander so they can have a turn out in the mud. Antidive geometry and arched suspension arms front and back combine with a tiny turning circle and some serious long-travel shocks to deliver telepathic handling and the ability to obliterate rough terrain. While the Commander is certainly competent and well equipped for rural chores, it’s apparent from its sheer aggressive look and stance that it’s

waiting to let loose and have some fun as well. A tubular frame, a peppy engine with more punch than those good-times ‘80s hatchbacks, and a whole lot of practicality as well? The question isn’t whether Can-Am has a handle on how to make off-roaders. It’s when they are going to combine the on-road abilities of the Spyder and the lightweight joy of the Commander to make a street-legal car that would surely rival the Ariel Atom. ¢

What to do in an auto emergency u by Andy Bryenton

Automotive emergencies take many forms, from losing the keys just before work through to dangerous crashes on the open road. This time of year, cold, darkness and dampness combine to hammer vehicles and create nasty conditions to make a repair or wait for help. If you break down in your own driveway or on a safe suburban street, it’s easy enough to find a space to park and maybe even hazard simple repairs like a tyre change. On the open highway, however, the rules are different. With ditches to the side and traffic travelling at triple-figure speeds, there’s a safety checklist to follow. The police and other transport agencies advise that as soon as you are aware of a problem with your car; brakes, steering, engine or even lights at night or wipers during rain, you should do the following: First, indicate and steer your vehicle as far off the road as possible. Don’t stop suddenly; give cars behind you plenty of warning. Find a space where your whole vehicle is off the road but as level as possible. Lift up the bonnet and boot and, if possible, hang something white on the driver’s door handle or window — this will show you need help. Many cars come with an emergency triangle sign under the boot lid for this reason. Then, so long as it’s not a battery issue, you can turn on your hazard lights. At night, turn on the inside light.

If you don’t have a mobile and it isn’t safe to walk to a telephone, stay in your car and wait for help. Never stand on the motorway, and don’t lie down on the motorway to check under the car for brake obstructions, punctures and the like. If you need help from other drivers, leave plenty of space for them to stop. If it’s just a flat tyre, you might have the tools and skill to fix it yourself. Nonnovices can handle small repairs such as slipped alternator belts, blown fuses and loose electrical connections on-site, but others should contact roadside rescue for a tow.

Dim lights, malfunctioning wipes and indicators, stalling or inability to start despite ample fuel are usually auto electrical issues. These are best handled by an auto electrician. Wobbly steering, leaks from the engine or radiator, overheating, inability to change gears or failing brakes are the domain of an automotive mechanic. Of course, both of these types of professionals will advise that an ounce of prevention is worth a tonne of repair. If at all possible, book your vehicle in for a check-up before winter arrives, and avoid this scenario in the first place. ¢

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. *Results may vary

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has used Septi-Cure™ for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Septi-Cure™ is:
