Despite the drought, Te Kopuru farmers, Chris and Karren Biddles, are grand champions for the second time round in the Beef and Lamb New Zealand Steak of Origin competition. The couple won in 2007 and also took out the Producer of the Decade title in 2012. Twenty contestants made it to the semi finals and 70 per cent of the winners were from the North Island. Chris took home the grand trophy and $6,500 in prize money. He says that this year has been tough with the drought and he struggled to find enough feed for his stock but the judges

were surprised that the quality was similar to past years. “It’s pleasing because it shows that we are producing good beef consistently,” said Chris. The competition panel of four judges is made up of top chefs, a food writer, and a farm commentator. “The standard never ceases to amaze me and choosing a winner was certainly no easy task,” said head judge, Graham Hawkes. Beef entered in the contest goes through numerous tests including tenderness, pH and marbling. ■

Otamatea five gain gold  by Sheri O’Neill

Plan hearings over  by Sheri O’Neill

Five former Otamatea High School students were among a group of 26 young people recently presented with Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards by the Governor-General.

Kaipara District Council commissioners have heard submissions from across the district on the council’s draft Annual Plan 2013/2014 and amendments to the Long Term Plan.

 Former Kaipara mayor, Peter Bull, making his submission to KDC commissioners at the Maungaturoto hearing

 L to R: Scott Donaldson, Kiriane Abel, Elliott Millar, Portia McCabe and Jonathon Sergeant

All were senior students at Otamatea in 2011, and completed their Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award programmes under the supervision of Robyn Bruce and Wayne Maclennan, who both teach at the school. Acting principal, Roy Fletcher, says he was very proud to attend the award ceremony at Government House in Auckland on behalf of the school. “I cannot recommend this programme enough, and we are very privileged that Mrs Bruce and Mr Maclennan continue to give up their time to make this opportunity possible for our students,” he says. Mrs Bruce has been involved with the programme for nine years and says although the activities take place out of school time the school is very supportive. “Currently we have 14 young people at bronze level, ten going for their silver award, and one for gold.” She says it is a long commitment for young people to work towards the gold award, but dropouts are rare past bronze level. “Once they’re hooked they’re in there for the duration.” The high cost

of meeting the adventurous journey requirement means a continuous round of fundraising in the form of school catering and socials.

“Currently we have 14 young people at bronze level, ten going for their silver award, and one for gold.” The Duke of Edinburgh Award, now in its 50th year in New Zealand, is an international programme for young people aged 14 to 25 aimed at building skills, identity and self esteem by participation in five specific areas: skills, service, physical recreation, adventurous journey and, at gold level, a residential project working with others to achieve a common goal. ■

A total of 311 written suggestions were received and 58 people spoke to their proposals during hearings held at Dargaville, Maungaturoto and Mangawhai. The commissioners will now make their final deliberations on the draft, with a special meeting scheduled for 2pm on Tuesday, May 21 at the Lighthouse Function Centre in Dargaville. Council’s community engagement manager, Barbara Ware, says issues and options arising from the public suggestions will then be considered by the commissioners. “Although we’re not expecting an extended deliberation process, the commissioners have the option to alter council officer recommendations or to ask for further work, and all submitters will receive letters from council in response to the matters they have raised.” She says after the deliberations council staff will make any

Fresh is best — Women in power and better value!  by Sheri O’Neill

Dargaville’s Robyn Dawes is one of the first two New Zealand women to qualify as cable jointers in the electricity sector.

 Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s Riverside Produce Market is a regular local showcase of great food from all across the district. But is it really better value for money than shopping out of town? We put the fresh bunch of stallholders at this Thursday afternoon institution to the test, and found out that $100 goes a long way when you shop direct ‘from the farm to the table’.

 Robyn Dawes

These days a $100 note doesn’t seem to stretch as far as it used to. But one picture of Lord Rutherford was able to net our secret shopper a swag of wholesome goodies, including — avocados, hot chili peppers, spring onions, new season’s kumara and pumpkin in the vege section; apples, limes, and peaches as a fruit selection; smokey bacon and deli-style salami, two crusty loaves of fresh-baked bread (one topped with herbs and olives, the other with cheese), some mussels, and even a generous wedge of Dutch cumin seed cheese. This proved to be enough to fashion a couple of amazing meals, with plenty more to keep the fridge full. Certainly the amount and volume of fruit, veg and food was similar to a $100 spend at a top ‘discount’ supermarket, but the freshness and quality was superior across the board. Try the $100 challenge for yourself sometime soon, and see just how much you can get out of your money by shopping local and shopping fresh.

Robyn was certified in February after completing a three year apprenticeship. Despite having a degree in IT, she says a chance sighting of a newspaper advertisement led her to the traditionally male-dominated industry. “The advertisement encouraged women to apply, and my Dad just said ‘go for it’,” she says. Alongside Whangarei’s Aroha McLean, Robyn trained through the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation. She says although both women are now currently working for Northpower in Auckland, they don’t work together. “I think both of us on the same team is probably a bit much!” Cable jointing involves exactly that

— connecting underground cables of varying voltages for applications ranging from commercial to residential. Robyn says all the building trades are still very much male-dominated and reactions on worksites can vary. “But the Northpower crews are great, they treat us the same as everyone else.” She says she loves the work and the variety in the job is a big plus. “No two jobs or days are the same.” Northpower’s business support manager, Barbara Harrison, says Robyn and Aroha’s achievements are impressive. “They have added so much to our team because they bring skills to the work group which help unlock the potential of others.” ■

Tangiteroria’s local tavern takes pride in being a real honest-togoodness rural kiwi pub, and this June they’re taking it to the hills and forests with their first ever dedicated pig hunt. Hunters from across the region will vie for bragging rights and some huge prizes as they literally ‘bring home the bacon’, but before the big event there’s a day of fun planned for one and all, raising prize money for the big event. On Sunday May 26, the Tangiteroria Tavern will be the place to be, with over $2,000 of prizes up for grabs in quickfire raffles, spot prize giveaways and a big ‘batons up’ fundraiser — a whole afternoon of chances to win big. There’ll also be music, cold

drinks, hot food from the kitchen, and a sausage sizzle to add to the fun. Right now you can pick up an entry to the big prize draw from some of our local Dargaville retailers and the Northern Wairoa Hotel. Each $20 ‘baton’ gets you a single place in the draw, but even if you win your baton is put back in the pot for another chance — a very lucky winner could sweep the entire pool. Money raised by this fun day will go towards the prizes for the forthcoming pig hunt, which is set to be a highlight of the Northland hunting calendar, joining such fabled events as the Mangamuka pig hunt and attracting some of the nation’s best and most experienced hunters.

Bank lends value to students  by Sheri O’Neill

A partnership between Dargaville High School and the Dargaville BNZ is lending valuable work experience to students.

 Dargaville High School student Emma Carruthers and BNZ customer service consultant Jane Tait

Through the school’s Gateway programme, which places up to 70 students a year with local employers, for the past year students have worked in the branch one day a week for three months at a time. “It’s a good arrangement for us,” says BNZ’s Chad Lowen. “We enjoy the students and the permanent staff get training experience which can be applied to new employees.” He says the first step is to bring the students out of their shells. “Conversation is the key aspect to our business, and it’s a special skill to talk to people and make them feel comfortable.” Gateway coordinator, Claudia

Guthrie-Oehlinger, agrees, and says the experience of working with the public pays off in building self-esteem. “Sometimes we underestimate how difficult it can be for young people starting out. They’re often super confident amongst their peers, but unable to relate well on all levels.” Other local businesses that support the programme include hairdressing, engineering, early childhood, and beauty therapy. Ms Guthrie-Oehlinger says placements are flexible to suit, with either a regular day or blocks of time during the school holidays. “Our employers are wonderful,” she says. “Without them we couldn’t do what we are doing.” ■

First art festival Sharing 50 years at Aratapu of memories  by Rose Rees-Owen

 by Rose Rees-Owen

Wine tasting, opera, jewellery, poetry, face painting, and balloon art are just some of the attractions at the first Aratapu Arts Festival.

This is the Life, Dargaville Little Theatre’s jubilee production written and directed by committee member, Deborah Steele, is open to the public.

 Anna Marie Cutts playing Fantine in Les Miserable with her daughter, Shannon, who is playing Cossette

The idea for the festival, which will be held at Aratapu Tavern, began when proprietor Donice Hall-Morris and long time member of the Dargaville Art Club Anna Murphy got talking. They came up with the concept of an art, wine and cheese evening but when Donice heard Anna Marie Cutts and Peter Martin sing she brought them on board. “They started belting out the most

The theatre will be celebrating its 50th jubilee over Queen’s Birthday weekend and the production will mark their 156th show. “We wanted to give the public a chance to see it — It’s a chance to learn what the theatre has produced in the past 50 years,” says Deborah. It is a parody of the television series, This is Your Life, where a host surprises guests with a show documenting their lives with participation from their family and friends. Deborah has personified the Dargaville Little Theatre and shares the best moments of pantomimes, musicals, comedies, tragedies and all the genres in between. “It’s hard for me to choose a favourite memory,” says Deborah, “but Maxine Stringer who choreographed the tap dancing in the 1992 production, Stepping Out, produced by Joy Kay, will be re-enacting some of

beautiful opera I have ever heard — I don’t normally care for opera but this performance had me mesmerised,” says Donice. She says after talking to more local artists, the interest grew with each person referring her on to a new artist and what began as a small gathering turned into a festival. It will suit children and adults alike, she says, with Colin Schwamm doing balloon art and Helen Nathan face painting. For the adults, as well as the art and craft exhibitors, there will be wine tasting and she will be showcasing a special wine label. It depicts Tokatoka and Maungaraho rocks as well as the Northern Wairoa River, and says the concept came from the Maori translation of Aratapu. “It means holy path,” says Donice, “and it feels like that when walking down to the river.” The festival will also feature The Kaipara Lifestyler’s own Andy Bryenton, who will perform an epic poem which won a University of Washington competition. ■

Two women and two guitars  by Rose Rees-Owen

Ivy Rossiter from the band, Luckless, has joined forces with folk singer, Nadia Reid, for a national tour called the Ballads and Badlands, including a stop at the Funky Fish in Baylys Beach. The pair, Ivy from Auckland and Nadia from Christchurch, became friends after meeting at a gig. “I had intense feelings of jealousy and insecurity when I first heard Nadia play because she’s talented beyond her years, but I quickly got over that, and thought she would be a great person to tour with,” says Ivy. Nadia, 21, writes songs of love and loss and she seeks inspiration from songwriters such as Beth Orton and Laura Marling. Ivy says Nadia’s stripped back acoustic sound complements her own songs which are accompanied by electric guitar. “We both play what I call, listening music, rather than dancing music, it’s slower and more reflective — we both have quite different sets, then come together at the end to collaborate.” Luckless has recently released their debut self titled album which Ivy says is the first step in a long career. Ivy played at the Funky Fish earlier this year and is excited to return. She hopes people will both support them during New Zealand music month as well as the cafe and bar owner, Beth Kelliher.

Golfing for a good cause

 Nadia Reid (left) and Ivy Rossiter set to begin their Ballads and Badlands national tour.

“For me, it’s just as important for local people to support people like Beth, who constantly support New Zealand music, as it is for them to support us.” They play on the May 25 with tickets available from, www.undertheradar.co.nz, as well as door sales.

 Ashton Coates tees off at the Carters Maungaturoto third Ambrose golf tournament which raised $500 for Otamatea Community Services. Fifty-six golfers worked on their swings at Paparoa Golf Course in teams of four giving a donation as their entry fee. Local businesses chipped in with Dreams, Real Town Pies, and Maungaturoto Hotel providing spot prizes and refreshments. A requirement was to have one woman per team, and a group of young boys met this by giving a skirt to the person who had the worst tee off on each nine holes. Site manager, Mike Schimanski, says it was great fun and he can’t wait for next year’s event.

Farmers ready to trade up for gypsy week  by Andy Bryenton

Both Can-Am and Kawasaki have new models of quads and UTVs waiting to hit the paddocks for the winter season, and both brands are on display at local Dargaville dealership Kaipara Motorcycles. With many farmers starting afresh in ‘greener pastures’ this gypsy week, there’s never been a better time to take a look at some serious rural hardware. And while the up-and-coming North American brand and the long established Japanese marque have some overlap, their machines fill different niches out on the farm. The Kaipara Motorcycles team will be out there for gypsy week and beyond, offering on-farm demos of the 2013 Kawasaki Mule and Brute Force ranges, as well as offering advice to newly mobile sharemilkers — and anyone else who works hard on the land. When it’s time to upgrade, along with advice and experience, Dargaville’s local Can Am and Kawasaki specialists offer the ability to trade in your old machine for something newer and more powerful. Your trade in will find a new home while

 The 2013 Kawasaki Mule promises years of trusty farm service

you enjoy more comfort, load space and power. Pickup and delivery of ATVs and bikes for their service centre is a strong point for the team, and they can repair and service all makes and models. Kaipara Motorcycles are moving soon, from 10 Edward St. Dargaville to just around the corner at 2 Normanby St. This will bring all the farmers of the region a new level of convenience, both for ATVs and motorcycle sales, parts and service, and for on-farm maintenance and electrical servicing of all kinds of equipment, including tractors and implements.

But now alla fun’s gone outa tha budjit.” By this time we wuz back ata homested, an’ Sharlene stood ina doorway. “Well, that was a waste of time Deah,” she sed in her skool teacha voice. Seems she wotcht it too. Then she sed tha only winna was that blimmin’ Mr Ki, wot runs tha place down in Willingtin, evin tho’ he rickins it’s rollin’ over an’ playin’ dead, like that dumb spanyil does ata lifestyle block downa road. “Yep,” sid Sharlene. “So they gonna build a few more houses.” “Achally, yore right,” seda Boss. “That Mr Ki’s in charge ofa toorists wot come hear ta visit kiwiland, and wot happind. Tha budjit chucked him

Then he had a bit ofa splutter, cos Sharlene tole him that mister Ki’s offiss got givin 22 millyin dollas ta spind as well. Boss slumt down ina cheer by tha fire. (It’s gittin a bit chili at night ona farm.) As ya no, Sharlene ana Boss gunna have a kid soon, an he musta bin thinkin’ about that. “Ya no, if I hada say ina budjit, I wooda takin tha munny off Mr Ki, and stuck ina skool lunch program. Lookit all those kids ina towns wot go ta skool wiv no tucka in there skoolbags.” Sharlene reckind spendin’ orl that munny on toorists wuz a bit weerd. She reckind we got those moovies about tha lord ofa rings, wot cost blimin millyins and millyins, an’ get seen orl ova that werld. “Yore right there Sharlene,” seda Boss. “Wen Billy and I wint downa Horks Bay tha otha week, I saw bussis and bussis of toorists at Matter Matter, looking at that Hobbytin place wear they made tha moovies.
