School enters the housing market u by Paul Campbell
Dargaville High School has launched a major new programme building custom designed two, three and four bedroom houses with a target of selling six new homes in the first year and making a difference to the country’s housing shortage..

The project at the school’s Building Academy has partnered with a private sponsor in a joint venture, creating DHS Enterprises Ltd. The first house is nearing completion, and all are being built by a group of eight academy students under the guidance of tutor and licensed master builder, Tim Pratt. “I’ve been wanting to do this since 2011 when the academy first started, but the school simply didn’t have the funds. Now we have a sponsor; we are up and running,” he said. There are five different custom designs across the three house sizes, designed by Lambeth Architectural of Dargaville with professional and financial assistance. Another major contributor to the project is the Carters Building Supply store providing engineering codes free of charge and materials at competitive prices. Kaipara District Council is also behind the programme. The three and four bedroom houses are approximately 105 square metres, with en-suites. They will sell at about $230,000 to $250,000, which includes all electrical wiring, plumbing, painting inside and out, toilet and bathroom. “The buyer would need to pay for transport to the site, foundations, council permitting costs white goods and floor coverings, at a completed cost of around $350,000, still a very low-cost and very well built house. “We have to do it 150% right. We are teaching students to become apprentice builders, so there are no shortcuts,

there is no half measure — we do it properly, and we get the council to do regular inspections.” The students also learn building theory, tool skills and safety during the year-long course, covering building industry (BCITO) approved unit standards, which are part of the NZ Building Apprenticeship Programme. Graduating students leave with a level three qualification. “It’s a win-win-win. We help reduce the housing shortage, the students gain essential, employable job skills in a reallife situation, learning on the job, and several local businesses also benefit.” Mr Pratt says the next steps are to source additional funding so two houses can be built simultaneously, and some sort of roof covering over both sites so
work can continue year-round. “This, of course, won’t be cheap, but we might even approach the government’s Provincial Growth Fund, as I believe we meet all of the criteria and more.” Any profit from the programme will be put back into the academy. “We want to start automotive and panel beating training alongside the building academy, so we can continue to provide essential pre-employment training, while enabling students to learn on real-life job sites, and importantly, keeping them in school so they leave with the highest qualification they can get — and one they can actually use.” All houses under construction and in the planning stages are currently for sale.

Dargaville rail link considered u by Paul Campbell
A new report to the government has factored in a reopened rail link to Dargaville as part of an upgrade of Northland’s rail network if a decision is made to expand Northport and transfer cargo operations from Auckland. The Ministry of Transport has told the government the cost of upgrading the rail line between Auckland and Whangarei, reopening the tracks north to Moerewa and west to Dargaville, and constructing a new spur east to Northport, is estimated cost $1.3b for 40 years — with $730m going in the first four years of construction. The report is regarded as significant, with the 2019 Budget scheduled for release on Thursday, May 30. Regional Economic Development minister Shane Jones has gone on record, saying “rail obviously is going to enjoy great attention coming up in the Budget, but I’ll leave it to my leader [Winston Peters] to elaborate.” Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters gave a firm election promise to relocate Ports of Auckland if New Zealand First gained the treasury benches. “The days of the Ports of Auckland as a container port, and as a car yard are numbered and Northland wants the jobs and opportunity,” he said then. Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith says he welcomes the discussion of reopened rail lines in Kaipara. “Upgrading rail through Kaipara

District, including the mothballed link to Dargaville, would be significantly transformative to what’s already the fastest-growing North Island district. Improved rail connections from Paparoa, Maungaturoto or Kaiwaka on the main trunk line to Auckland would encourage new business and residential opportunities through the heart of the district. For Kaipara, the light at the end of the tunnel is even brighter than it already was.” If Northport is given the go-ahead, it would move 400,000 containers, 100,000 from within Northland and 300,000 from Auckland. There would be major savings on rail, cutting 75,000 truck journeys and congestion estimated to cost up to and more than $1 billion annually. The MOT business case also suggests road accidents in Northland cost $20 million a year and a $3.8 million annual road maintenance bill. Significant too, given the government’s commitment to climate change, is the statistic showing rail would replace road traffic to the tune of 10 thousand tonnes annually in carbon emissions. ¢

Rahui decision in landfill fight The Fight the Tip campaign to halt a proposed landfill for Auckland rubbish in the Dome Valley and a catchment for the Kaipara Harbour want a rahui declared over the 1,000-hectare site. It follows a public meeting last week in Wellsford attended by Northland MP Matt King, MP for Northland. “We learned what a rahui was, how it fitted into both Maori customary law and the NZ legal system through the Resource Management Act and the Treaty of Waitangi and what needed to happen to actually place it upon the landfill site,” said executive committee member, Sue Crockett. “As long as all protocols are followed to the letter, a rahui effectively stops any development on the site. Our strength is in all members of this community around the Kaipara working together to protect our land and our waterways. “There was unanimous support for continuing this approach to place a rahui on the site and the next action is a large hui of tangata whenua and other community members to confirm the action and plan the details. Sunday, June 9 at the Wellsford Community Centre from 1pm to 5pm.” The meeting heard that Fight the Tip’s petition to parliament about banning landfills near waterways is being discussed by the Environment Select Committee. “Anyone who has a story or brief evidence to support our submission to the Select Committee please email fightthetip.nz@gmail.com. “There was discussion on future waste strategies generated to some extent by the recent release of a new government plan. We are all very aware that Auckland’s and New Zealand’s rubbish has to be dealt with. “As part of our opposition to the landfill, we are encouraging discussion and research around alternatives to simply dumping unsorted waste into the ground. It is amazing what other options there are out there.”

That is where Dargaville comes in u by Matt King, Northland’s Member of Parliament
The NZ Transport Agency is the government agency that plans manages and maintains our state highways. That is a huge responsibility and, yes, there are occasions the NZTA can’t and don’t please everybody. However, they do a pretty good job. Up here in the north, among other initiatives, they responded immediately to the previous government’s call for the two-laning of some of our most important bridges — Matakohe and Taipa are well advanced. They have responded with somewhat less surety to serious safety concerns regarding Auckland to Whangarei, but that is probably attributable to the present government’s confusion (read: disarray) about what it actually wants. When the NZTA is left to its own devices, it can display visionary and pragmatic thinking. That is where Dargaville comes in. Last week NZTA organised a Twin Coast Discovery Highway design workshop in Dargaville. Its purpose was to identify potential improvement opportunities along the highway; an 800-kilometre circular touring route

in Northland connecting key tourist attractions and communities. Important stuff, and I am pleased NZTA chose Dargaville for one of their workshops. I am even more pleased with this NZTA statement: “Dargaville has been identified as a key link for people connecting around the region… we want to make sure that the community has an opportunity to give their input.” Good on the NZTA for having that approach. It is a government depar tment that doesn’t act unilaterally, that recognises (at least on this occasion) its primary responsibility is to the public (with whom it wants to foster a partnership), and is prepared to involve us in its planning process. We could do with more of that. I commend the NZTA and Isthmus who organised and attended this highly productive event, and the ‘locals’ who took up the opportunity and the invitation to give their input. It’s a credit to all involved. ¢

Mum’s the word u by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville Kindergarten was full of glamour, colour and laughter on Friday, May 10, as students treated their mums to a day of pampering complete with ‘bubbly’ and nibbles.
p Mums and kids got together to spend some fun and fashionable quality time at their local Kindergarten for Mother’s Day
A raffle with a Mother’s Day theme helped to boost funds, already building for a new playground project to increase accessibility and quality play time. Head teacher Emma Parsons says that the day was all about appreciation, giving mums some time to share with their young children in a fun and relaxed environment. It also allowed them to get together, and connect with the kindergarten to see some of what makes it a place of both education and fun. Children had the chance to do their mum’s makeup, hair and nails, relax with a foot bath and hand soak, and could
even get together to make jewellery to share. While the makeup artistry may have been more fun than fashionable, and the bubbles were merely grape juice, this progressive idea had young and old alike smiling. It’s balanced out by a ‘superman’ day for dads later in the year. The winner of a raffle for a pack of beauty essentials was Sheena Cullen, and funds from this will go in tandem with those raised by a truck show earlier this year to create a new, more accessible and versatile play area to take Dargaville Kindergarten into the future. ¢

The road ahead
Out there for the kids
Plans to upgrade and improve the safety and practicality of Dargaville’s roads were put on the table last Wednesday, May 15, as representatives of the New Zealand Transport Agency came to town to host a community workshop.
u by Andy Bryenton

Ray White’s Dargaville team swapped their desks and computers for tongs and aprons on Thursday, May 16 to join in a fundraiser for the national Ronald McDonald House Charity, helping keep families with sick children together in their time of crisis.
p Jean and the team fire up the grill for Ronald McDonald House Charity and their annual fundraiser
p A plan of attack; maps were laid out with key areas and solutions identified to roading issues by a diverse group
In the spotlight was the Twin Coast Discovery Highway, a route that is already of substantial tourist interest, but which the NZTA have highlighted for improvement. As this road (which comes south from Rawene’s ferry crossing and through the Waipoua Forest in our region) passes directly through the heart of Dargaville, it was a chance for citizens and business owners to have their say alongside elected representatives and employees of the Kaipara District Council. A diverse group, including the mayor, attended and took part in exercises to theorise and workshop
ideas addressing traffic movement, safety, ease of access and more. The day-long workshop uncovered several ideas to make local roads more efficient, from clear visible signage through to traffic control for a pair of bustling intersections in Dargaville, both at Hokianga Road’s crossing with Normanby Street and also the Awakino Road corner, which sees a large volume of hospital traffic. NZTA says that this current consultancy phase helps build the business case for funding, with eight towns along the Twin Coast route included in the plan. ¢
Local Ray White Real Estate owner, Jean Johnson, says that this particular cause is one that has touched the lives of many west Kaipara residents, who have either had children in their own extended family referred to the National Children’s Hospital, Starship, for treatment, or have friends and neighbours who have been in a similar situation. The Ronald McDonald House Charity operates not one but two large Auckland facilities able to accommodate the families, caregivers and relatives of children in need of in-
hospital care. Thus the choice to take a break from the business of property and fire up the barbecue, with the generous help of Silver Fern Farms, who provided steak and sausages. Cupcakes and an entire chocolate cake were also up for grabs as townsfolk filled the buckets with donations to assist in the good work Ronald McDonald House continue to do in keeping families close when medical emergencies strike. The appeal, and the help of Jean and the team is an annual occurrence in Dargaville. ¢

Creative jam
Shooting season a mixed bag
u by Andy Bryenton
u by Paul Campbell
This Friday, May 25, sees the return to the Kaipara of a musical tradition, which has been missing for many moons; a creative, open mic jam live at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club.
Early predictions that this year’s game bird season was expected to follow last year’s successful hunt have not quite measured up in the days following the opening, but according to Fish and Game Northland, it is shaping up to be a “reasonable” season.
When he first moved to Dargaville more than a decade ago host, Olly Knox found a flourishing music scene centered around the Funky Fish and their open mic nights. It was there he connected with a community and found a space for improvised jam sessions and opportunities for people to get up and play whatever they wanted to play. Open mics foster talent and have been the place where great bands have come together. With the closure of the Funky Fish and a subsequent gap in the sonic landscape, Mr Knox has taken it upon himself to host an Open Mic for NZ Music Month.
QUAD BIKE SAFETY
The event is to be held at the superbly positioned Northern Wairoa Boating Club looking out over the river and starting at 7pm. It’s open to any type of performance and is a chance to get out and reconnect with the musical community, have fun and play music, recite poetry, sing or improvise. A full band set-up of a drum kit, amps, and microphones will be provided, but please bring your own instruments as well. It’s only a gold coin to come and join the fun, which precedes a massive showcase of the visual and musical arts to come later, at Matariki. ¢
“So far it has been a bit of a mixed bag in Northland and the Kaipara Harbour, with some hunters doing okay particularly on shelducks picking up grain left from local harvests, while other bags have been patchy,” said Northland Fish and Game manager, Rudi Hoetjes. “The weather has not been ideal for shooting with low-lying fog proving a problem when shooters sometimes can’t see a bird until the last minute.” He said hunters were having some success with waterfowl in some forest areas and noted that there were plenty of pheasants about. Fish and Game field staff say there are good duck numbers generally across the country.and advise hunters to keep up to date with the latest rules and information by checking the Fish and Game websites for their areas.

Think think think.
Six out of the 12 Fish and Game regions, including Auckland/Waikato, which begins just south of Wellsford, have introduced a three-shot policy, restricting hunters to three rounds in a magazine to help conserve duck numbers. The Northland Fish and Game Region extends from a line midway to a point between the North Head and South Head of the Kaipara Harbour, then running due east to a point just north of Wellsford and then a line running northeast to Te Arai Point just south of Mangawhai Heads. Mr Hoetjes says while this area does not limit shooters to three rounds, the local board is awaiting reports from those areas with a limit, to assess the results. ¢

Paradise Lost exhibition
Austria comes to Dargaville
The Dargaville Museum is hosting the exhibition Paradise Lost — Daniel Solander’s Legacy, which will be open to the public from June 3 until July 7.
u by Andy Bryenton
p Part of the Solander exhibition — Jenna Packer, What is this tree of knowledge, do we not also have
The exhibition commemorates Captain Cook’s voyage to New Zealand in the Endeavour 250 years ago. Daniel Solander, a prominent botanist of his time, along with Sir Joseph Banks, was on board to record new botanical findings at each stop throughout the voyage. Developed by the Solander Galleries’ co-directors Paulette Robinson and Vincent Drane in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy the exhibition is the most extensive Swedish project to be represented in New Zealand.
“Te Uri O Hau, Te Roroa and Parawhau whanau will be performing a welcoming powhiri, for invited guests of honour into the museum. The consulate of Sweden will open the invitation-only event on June 2,” says Dargaville Museum director Maree Saunders. Together, 10 Pacific artists are involved in the exhibition with 20 artworks produced in response to Daniel Solander’s legacy, including genres ranging from screen prints, etchings, acrylic, oil and ink, to acrylic on bamboo paper. ¢
After months of rehearsals and choral practice, Dargaville Little Theatre’s production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music enjoyed a successful opening night last Saturday, May 11.
p The stage is alive with The Sound of Music, as Dargaville’s theatrical troupe bring the classic story to a triumphant opening night
An ensemble cast of soldiers, aristocrats, nuns and servants joined the family Von Trapp on stage to present the story of the singing troupe’s escape from the Nazis in 1930s Austria. The Dargaville Little Theatre is made up entirely of volunteers, so every actor and singer (some from as far afield as Whangarei) has kindly donated their time to make this visual and musical feast a success. So, too, are the team who organise choreography and costumes, lighting, sound, sets and props. An audience, which came close to full capacity, were
the first to witness DLT’s humorous and perfectly pitched interpretation of what is known to thespians as a challenging production. Special mention must go not only to the vocal talent on display but also to the seven actors playing the Von Trapp children, from the age of 5 to, as the song says, ‘16 going on 17’. All displayed consummate professionalism. Tickets are still available for the continuing run of The Sound of Music in Dargaville, including two family-friendly Sunday matinees on May 19 and May 26. ¢

ALBERTLAND ANNIVERSARY
Across the ocean to Albertland u by Andy Bryenton
Birmingham in the early 1860s was a place that rivalled London itself when it came to the Dickensian levels of both honest piety and poverty; a city where the industrial revolution had created both a lower middle class and an underclass with puritan ethics and the desire to break free of what they saw as a stifling social system. So when William Rawson Brame took out an advertisement looking for settlers in a Birmingham newspaper in 1861, people listened. America was embroiled in a civil war over the fate of slavery, and it was impossible to emigrate there. Australia was a notorious prison colony. New Zealand had already seen two successful religious settlements, by Scots and Anglican Christians Otago and Canterbury respectively. Brame set out to create not just a new settlement where honest men and women could make a future through honest labour. He looked to the Kaipara Harbour as a place where he could make an example of a model community. In the end, more than 3,000 settlers signed up for what would be a one-way trip, selling up their lives in England to sail here on tall ships which were not
built for large passenger contingents. May 29 1862 (157 years ago to the day, just next week) was chosen as an auspicious day, as it reflected the date 200 years before when nonconformist ministers were thrown out of the Church of England, effectively establishing the puritan-style sect of which Brame and his followers were adherents. Two initial ships, the Matilda Wattenbach and the Hanover sailed from London and arrived at what would become Port Albert to offload the settlers. What happened next is a testament to the practicality and mindset of these people, who had been brave enough to leave the familiarity of England behind, at a time when Britain was the hub of civilisation. They found that the place where they were supposed to build their ‘shining city’ (one to rival Auckland)
p Ships like these transported more than 3,000 people from Victorian England to the Albertland Settlement in the early 1860s
was not as ideal as they thought. They also discovered that the Kaipara was an area rich in natural resources, and many other spots connected by its waterways and inlets were just right. Maungaturoto, Matakohe, Paparoa and Wellsford all came from settlers striking out in different directions to make a new
home here in New Zealand. Today, Port Albert is a sleepy seaside village with a single wharf. However, for a while there, it was something else. An imaginary city, never built, which nevertheless inspired hundreds of people to seek their fortune far from home. ¢

FA R M I N G
Call the professionals for safety Rural New Zealand is a place, which tends to favour the multi-skilled; after all, there’s so many things to do around the farm or even the rural home that it’s good to develop a wide range of abilities to fix, mend, renew and restore those things that fail due to wear and tear. The big jobs sometimes require a professional approach, especially when it comes to those tasks that are a bit out of the ordinary. It is doubly true for those that take place off the ground, such as repairing roofing and guttering or taking care of overgrown trees. According to ACC statistics, the most dangerous thing in the tool shed is not a saw or hammer, but a ladder, with $17 million in injury claims a year recorded from ladder accidents. That statistic goes up as the age of the ladder user goes up, too; a fact accident analysts put down to the cando attitude of our older generation, who are used to tackling tasks themselves. Relatively recent changes to the rules about working above a certain height have recognised the perils of falling and of poorly supported surfaces, leading to the requirement for professional tradespeople to erect scaffolding or use a secured harness in many aerial applications. While prudent, this had also added to the time and cost of undertaking such projects, leading many people to try to go it alone. This time of year is especially busy when it comes to getting off the ground, with gutters to clean, roof leaks to repair and dead tree limbs to cut down before storms drop them. The overwhelming message from health care providers is to be careful, assess the situation, and in any doubt as to your equipment and abilities, call the professionals. The reasoning is clear when a 2006 British study is taken into account. Of 200,000 cases of do-it-yourself injury (in one year, but not the larger population of Great Britain), more than half required time off work, and all, by definition, required a trip to the doctor.

FA R M I N G
The origins of a Kiwi tradition u by Andy Bryenton
As far back as most dairy farmers can remember, June 1 has been called Gypsy Day; the time of year when farms changed hands and sharemilkers took to the roads to move to their new pastures for the season. Digging deeper to find out why this is the case reveals a couple of interesting points. The first of which, of course, is that this day has nothing at all to do with the Roma people of Europe, the original Gypsies, who, along with the Irish Travellers, make up the largest nomadic culture remaining in the developed world. The name is a nod to the way these folk would travel the roadways in ancient times, with all their possessions and their livestock in tow. It’s a romanticised notion of life on the road, but one that resonated with our colonial forebears, who, once a year would see cows and wagons lining the rural roads as farms changed hands. Nevertheless, why June 1? The day seems arbitrary, but the effects are real.
Schools see enrolments jump around this time, those tradespeople who renovate homes are busy in the rural heartland, and hundreds of millions of dollars change hands as properties are sold. One theory holds that the timing is to do with the date of cows drying off before calving, but this varies according to climate and stock genetics. Another holds that the date was set in order to get the new farm squared away before winter struck. However, the oldest records point to the date set not by farmers but by clerks, at the State Advances Corporation in the 1890s. This body was set up to lend money to settlers for creating new farms, and the powers that be expected

their money back as the farm flourished. June 1 was set as a date different from the end of the corporate year, but also to enable physical messages to reach London, still the hub of commerce, by ship, before the end of the British business year. In those days of manual

Electric tools come of age u by Andy Bryenton
No so long ago petrol was king when it came to handling outdoor power, and the average tradesperson would carry a can of twostroke mix everywhere. Times have changed, and there are now some serious tools which run exclusively off electricity, raising the possibility of charging up a whole array of batteries direct via inverter from the ute or van itself. These are no weak or retiring versions of their petrol counterparts either. Here are three of the best, which are beloved of modern trade professionals, and might be a good match around the farm as well. Stihl invented the world’s first electric cut off saw specifically for those circumstances where it’s too far to run an extension cable. Compact and lighter than its petrol opposite number, the TSA 230 can cut tiles to size, bricks for masonry projects, and even comes with an abrasive wheel to slice steel like a roast dinner. Weighing in at 3.9 kilograms, the TSA 230 can cut to a depth of 70mm and keep going continually for up to 15 minutes on a single battery. That’s a quarter hour of powering through stone and steel, which is pretty impressive. Makita has made
cordless drills for years now, but they have upped the ante with the super powerful DHR 242Z. A hammer drill, which is as serious as those that run a cable or even a small petrol motor, this monster weighs far less than you might think and can tackle drilling tasks into the toughest materials. It’s also designed to fit Makita’s portable dust extraction system, and it has an easy to operate slide chuck for quick switchout of bits. Husqvarna is as at home with chainsaws as Makita are with drills, but once again their cordless range is a step up in practicality and power. Take, for example, the 535i XP, a chainsaw, which weighs less than its petrol stablemates but has been designed with the carpenter and tradie in mind as well as the home firewood user. Quieter, with less vibration and lower maintenance costs, this saw can even be attached to a battery backpack for all-day use without a recharge and far from power points. ¢

But they caused a real shemozzle, and hadta run for cover. That Juicynda Ardern says she’s givin’ up the idea wile she’s runnin’ things in Wullington.” Sharlene agreed with Boss, an sed we still mite havta pay more for drinkies at happy our. “But Deah,” she sed: ”The guvmint reckons this budget is gonna make us feel good too.”
“Humpff,” seda Boss. “Nah,” sed Sharlene. She pickt upa paper and red in her skootecher voice: “It says here that ‘ The Wellbeing Budget on 30 May is about tackling New Zealand’s long-term challenges. It will do this by focussing on five priorities: Taking mental health seriously Improving child wellbeing Suppor ting Maori and Pasifika aspirations Building a productive nation Transforming the economy.” “Hey yeah. Right, Who gotta majick wand eh? Transforming the econimy? Buildin’ a productive nation? We bin producting meat and milk and wool; an crops, an food; an exports — an’ all of a sudden we gonna get producting???” Boss had a bitova splutter in his cuppatee. “Yeah, well deah,” sed Sharlene. “I reckin they acterly mean ‘aspirations’, like that’s wot the govmint wants ter do. Duzzint mean they really goona sukseed in everthing they want.” “Yeah” seda Boss, “well they lost out ona gains tax thingy, so no probs. If they dont sukseed ina budget, they kin just say they throwin’ it na too hard baskit, an’ think up some other asper-thing wot you sed.” “Yes deah, aspirations. It’s a good word ‘cos they kin say, well that was
