More than 1000 delegates, including international travel buyers and media, tourism operators and VIPs gathered for the most important trade event on the multi-billion dollar tourism industry’s calendar. Over four days, almost 13,500 meetings took place with 308 invited travel buyers from 30 markets across the globe. itineraries to bring visitors to the Kaipara and West coast. I believe I had nearly 80 appointments.” Ms Nelley added that as well as the museum destination she was able to direct attention up the Twin Coast Discovery Highway “to the iconic Waipoua Forest. “I was able to talk about other businesses on the beautiful Hokianga. The event gives The Kauri Museum the opportunity to grow new business and to communicate with both a domestic and an international target audience. The world’s top buyers and media are present and networking and social events are also great for business.” She said that this year the Chinese market was seen as really growing as well as interest from Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia. “There is always interest in the west coast from Japan as Japanese people have a real love for the Waipoua Forest, but we need to keep working on this market and Trenz allows this to happen.”

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.
Hazel Craig — a sight to see by Brian Eastwood
Although Hazel Craig was a regular visitor for almost twenty years, most people around Kaipara Harbour would not have seen the three-masted barquentine in full flight. Described by one historian as ‘beautifully modelled, perfectly built and a perfect specimen of the small trader of the eighteen seventies and eighties’, she would have been a sight to see. Often sent to load at Aoroa Mill she was sometimes then towed by tug SS Sterling to take on timber at the Dargaville railway wharf. At other times, as a typical newspaper report on February 2nd 1909 noted, ‘The barquentine Hazel Craig, having
finished loading a consignment of timber at Mitchelson and Company’s Aoroa mill, is now filling up at Kauri Company’s mill at Te Kopuru. When loading is complete the vessel sails for Sydney’. No time was wasted. One week later she left Kaipara and in another nine days was unloading in Sydney. So voyage followed voyage, with few breaks. In August the busy trader was reported to be ‘loading coal at Newcastle, Australia, for the Kaipara Steamship Company, to be partly delivered to Helensville with the rest going to Hore Hore’. Later in the year Hazel Craig loaded at Aoroa with 397,148 feet of sawn timber valued at £2000, the
shipment destined again for Sydney. Originally named Quathlamba, the iron-hulled barquentine was launched at Aberdeen in 1879. With a bit more comfort and style than most, she was built for the United Kingdom South Africa passenger trade and for trade to Natal, India and North America. New Zealand shipping owner James Craig bought her in London in 1899 to add to his intercolonial fleet. He renamed some of his ships in 1906 for family members, so that she became Hazel Craig in honour of his youngest daughter. The new addition was capable of fast speeds that would enable her to compete with and often beat her bigger sisters in the Craig Line. On one occasion Hazel left Newcastle at the same time as the much bigger Jessie Craig and James Craig for Auckland. Hazel arrived Thursday morning at 8.30, Jessie at 5.30 that evening and. James didn’t turn up until Saturday. Whether because of being well built, lucky or well handled, there were few
bad incidents at sea for Hazel under the Craig flag. Once when heading out of Sydney for New Zealand, her Captain Whitton decided to head back but just because of leaking decks. But while still named Quathlamba, she was dismasted on a voyage three days after leaving Auckland, yet managed to get back to port twelve days later. James Craig sold Hazel in 1906, although she remained in the transTasman trade. Six years later the barquentine changed hands again to deliver kahikatea to Australia for making butter boxes. Her new owners, the Whitepine Shipping Company, changed her name to an unimaginative Whitepine. When she struggled to make a living after World War One, Whitepine was converted into a coal hulk in Melbourne. An even more dismal fate awaited in 1947 when she was taken out to sea and sunk with explosives. Imagine if we could see her today under full sail as a tourist attraction on Kaipara Harbour.

Feedback on plan may result in significant changes Kaipara District Council CEO Steve Ruru says that community feedback from the 11 public meetings held around the District — including one at Mangawhai which drew over 2,000 people protesting about increases in rates — may mean that there are some significant changes when the final LTP is adopted “While we don’t want to pre-empt any decisions Council might make or anticipate as to the content of the submissions we expect to come in before consultation ends on 30 May, ratepayers have made a number of messages very clear already, with consistent themes coming through in the comments and questions at the public meetings,” he says. “There is concern about the overall increase in rates which will affect most people one way or another, and we understand that. There are options available to reduce the level of rating increase in the short to medium term but these will mean we pay more in the long run so it will be a balancing act as we try to work out the best mix of affordability and economy overall. “We have received a lot of feedback about the concept of SUIPs (separately used or inhabited parts of a property) and the effects that changing the rating base in this way are likely to have on individual businesses in rented premises; and also, for example, on blocks of flats that are rented to people in lower socio-economic groups. “The Roading rate too has created a great deal of comment and we may need to review this proposal including the differentials we are proposing between different property types.” Deputy Mayor Julie Geange said there was still plenty of time for people to put in their submissions before the closing time of 4pm on Wednesday 30 May. “The clearer we can be on people’s views the more likely we are to make decisions that

reflect what the community wants,” she said. “Some people have used the LTP process as an opportunity to vent their frustration at what they consider to be poor decision-making and overspending in the past resulting in unacceptable rates increases,” she said. “That is understandable but it is important to recognise that there is a separate investigation under way by the Auditor General into what has happened in the past. While recognising the community’s desire to understand what has happened in the past we must address the challenges that we have. Central government have made it clear that we need to find our own way of tackling the financial challenges we face, which are not going to go away any time soon. Even if any funds were able to be recouped — and it’s by no means clear if that’s even a possibility at this point — it would be a

lengthy process and we need to find a financially sustainable pathway in the meantime.” Another concern expressed by ratepayers relates to the fact that the Council’s Annual Report for the 2010-11 year has still not been adopted. Mr Ruru said that the Annual Report would be adopted shortly after public consultation closes on the draft 2012 LTP and that despite everyone’s best efforts it had not been possible to complete it before the consultation period ended. “We know that people are worried there might be matters in the Annual Report that would affect the content of the draft LTP or any submission they might want to make,” he said. “We have, however, taken the financial results for the 2010/11 financial year and the forecast for the current 2011/12 financial year into account in preparing the draft LTP. “Audit NZ have also told us that they are satisfied that all significant matters in the Report have been adequately reflected in the draft LTP.”

Thanks to modern telecommunications it is now possible to work anywhere in the world from a remote location James Brackenbury is doing just that, teaching employees of a film company in Beijing editing techniques from his home in Dargaville. The project is in collaboration with friend and colleague, NZ film producer David Baldock. “David and I have worked together for over 20 years on many shows,” says James. David is based in Beijing where he is employed by a Chinese company to produce arts and tourism promotional films. “They decided to utilise a media system previously used to cut Lord of the Rings movies and he needed an editor to train them how to use it, so he called me,” explains James. A former TVNZ editor with over 35 years’ experience, James has edited such iconic NZ shows as Country Calendar, Frontier of Dreams, and more recently, Sensing Murder,
Our People Our Century and Location Location. “The latest technology has made it easy to work remotely. With this project I am teaching remotely in real time with only half a second time lag.” “I connect to Beijing every day via the internet at 7pm and spend three to four hours teaching editing techniques. A translator is used to interpret between us but sometimes things are lost in translation and this makes for some hilarious moments.” “I’m really enjoying the project because the people I’m training are enthusiastic and receptive and it’s something completely different.” The project will take several months and as part of post-production a trip to Beijing for James looks likely.
There are three levels of the award, with the kindergarten gaining its silver award last year. “To achieve the award the kindergarten had to meet the seven requirements, the provision of food; lunchbox guidelines, a food and nutrition policy, an active movement policy, parent/whanau education, professional development, curriculum linked physical activity and food and nutrition activities,” said teacher, Alishya Chircop. “Children are already very active; we extend this by providing safe challenges in the playground, mat time games, music and sports. For example last year we had our own rippa rugby tournament. We have found that children are empowered through their knowledge of healthy choice’s, they eat their healthy kai first and are proud to tell you the healthy food they ate. “We are continually encouraging our parents and whanau to join in the activities at the kindergarten, with the donation of fruit for our children to eat, helping out in our garden and encouraging our whanau’s to take home the produce we grow, with a orchard already been planted at our new kindergarten. Citizens of Kaipara, You Must Get Involved The Massive EcoCare Debt is not a Mangawhai Debt
It is a Kaipara Debt The loans the Kaipara District Council have entered into, to pay for the Mangawhai wastewater system are secured against the entire rating base of the Kaipara District, not just Mangawhai. Even though there is a proposed targeted rate for most of the loan, if the people of Mangawhai cannot afford to pay the huge rate increases and the council is forced to default on any loans, the responsibility will finally fall on all ratepayers — as your homes, farms and commercial properties have been used as security.
If you are responsible for the debt you must have your say Submissions on the Long Term Plan close at 4pm on Wednesday 30 May. It doesn’t have to be complicated, if you have an opinion, an idea or a criticism, a letter or an email to the council is regarded as a submission, and you can ask to be heard. ECOCARE — THE TRUTH
www.kaiparaconcerns.co.nz is the website of Clive Boonham, a retired barrister and solicitor of Mangawhai. This site has become a major information point and watchdog for residents of the Kaipara regarding the EcoCare system and other council matters. Following is a summary of the history in the development of EcoCare.
We did not like the EcoCare scheme. We felt that we were bulldozed into it. We felt that there were better and cheaper alternatives for protecting the harbour. But we finally accepted it. We performed our part of the bargain We paid our capital rates — even though they were illegal. We paid our annual charges — even though they were illegal.
The story of EcoCare goes back to the 1990s. There were all sorts of proposals but in 2005 the scope of the scheme was finally agreed by Council and Earth Tech the contractor. A wastewater project of this size cannot be approved by Council without consulting with the community.
Developers paid their development contributions — even though they were illegal We even paid the unit of demand levies — even though they were illegal and ultra vires. (Council had no power or right to levy them.)
In February 2006 Council issued a statement of proposal setting out the terms of the contract with Earth Tech and explaining to ratepayers what the scheme meant to them and how the scheme would be funded.
For four years we have performed our obligations to the letter.
That statement of proposal was adopted as part of the Long Term Plan for 2006/16.
Council is telling us that the contract that we had is meaningless, and that all the figures were wrong.
•
The project cost was $35.6 million.
•
The contractor was to be responsible for all cost overruns.
Council tells us that the EcoCare debt is $58 million and that the total cost was $62,268,855. There are suggestions that the true cost is as high as $80 million.
•
Because of concerns about substantial growth the scheme was to cater for 3,300 connections.
•
This was for a complete scheme.
It included provision for:

We thought we had a sewerage scheme at a fixed price of $35.6 million and we thought that we had already paid for it. Council is now telling us that even though we have already paid for the scheme we now have to pay for it again.
•
Reticulation of the current urban areas.
•
Connection of established households.
•
Establishment of the sewer transfer network between Mangawhai Heads, Mangawhai Village and the Treatment Plant site in Mangawhai Park.
•
Establishment of Treatment Plant in Mangawhai Park, and
That is fine. All schemes need fine tuning. But these were changes on a large scale with a corresponding increase in costs.
•
Disposal and or reuse of treated wastewater and biosolids.
Council was obliged to comply with the LGA and consult with ratepayers.
The only thing that had not been finalised was the final disposal site for the effluent. •
This document encapsulates the agreement between the Council and ratepayers.
•
It is a “contract” based on trust.
•
It is the founding document of EcoCare.
•
It was set in concrete and could not be changed unilaterally.
I say that because the EcoCare scheme is deemed to be a “strategic asset” and any decision relating to it is a “significant decision”. Under the Local Government Act (LGA) this requires decision-making and consultation at the highest level. Not only that, under section 97 of the LGA a decision to alter significantly the intended level of service provision for any significant activity MUST NOT be taken without the decision being included in a Long Term Plan and in a statement of proposal. This meant that Council could not make any significant changes to what was in the original statement of proposal without a formal consultation process and issuing a new statement of proposal. -----------------------------
----------------------------So what happened? Clearly there were massive changes to the scheme.
Council was obliged to issue a new statement of proposal. Council did nothing. Council kept everything secret. All resolutions were passed in public excluded sessions. None of the subsequent plans, annual or long term, mentioned the amendments to the scheme or the increase in costs. For all those years Council kept the matter secret from ratepayers. What Council did was a fundamental breach of the law. Councils only have the power to act if they comply with the requirements of the Local Government Act. Council failed to do that. Council was therefore acting ultra vires (outside its powers). Council had no power to enter into any new contract or incur an increased debt. But more than that, Council misled the ratepayers of this district. Council completely misrepresented what the EcoCare scheme was going to cost. And that is why the Auditor-General is holding the inquiry.

ECOCARE — THE TRUTH What happened? Ratepayers would not have known the true story, but in November last year, Glennis Christie at council opened up one of Jack McKerchar’s secrete drawers and released on the Council website all the public excluded resolutions and reports relating to EcoCare.
• That the reticulation area was going to be extended to capture more properties.
Those documents show how Council hid the true facts and the true costs of EcoCare from the ratepayers.
• That the Lees farm was to be used for effluent disposal with an 11km pipeline to connect it to the plant.
In May 2006, before the statement of proposal and the LTP had been adopted, Council was already secretly changing the scheme.
The Chief Executive commented that the changes: Basically doubled the original scope.
• That Council would apply for a Plan change to get denser housing in the reticulation area.
On 24 May 2006 it resolved to buy the Lees property as an effluent An amended Project Deed was prepared and a motion to sign this disposal site for $4.75 million plus GST. The deal was confirmed by was passed by Council on 28 November 2007. The motion was moved resolution on 23 August but the price had gone up to $5.113 million. by Councillors Sutherland and Smith and approved by all Councillors, (Council omitted to include a price in the option to purchase!) including current Councillors Tiller and Geange. The resolutions were both made in public excluded session. On 26 October 2006 Council, in public excluded session, considered a report from Beca on the sizing and growth presumptions of the EcoCare project.
In other words the original proposals were scrapped and replaced by new proposals that substantially altered the scope of the scheme and increased the cost. The new contract price was almost $43 million but that did not include the cost of the Lees farm.
The Chief Executive summarised the report and stated that:
All done without any consultation and without any statement of proposal.
• There had been substantial growth in population. • The current model of 3,300 connections appeared conservative. • Capacity was to be increased to 4,500 connections. • The plant was to be upgraded.
Ratepayers were kept completely in the dark. It was completely illegal. The price has blown out to $62 million or $70 million or $80 million. Nobody knows the true figure.
Comments from Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Assn The draft LTP rests on many illegalities. Larry Mitchell and P J Associates reported inadequate council financial monitoring, non-compliance with statutory requirements, breaches of council borrowing policy, unrealistic financial assumptions, the absence of council liquidity risk management, the lack of cash reserves and unsustainable debt. Unimaginable rate increases abound. One assessment goes from $6,316 to $84,850 (1,343% times) another $4,300 to $14,400 – (335% times). Many large ratepayers up 50%. Inadequate consultation. LTP presentations to close of submission, only 15 days for some. 50% do not have internet access to view the 100s of pages. The re-rating distributions suggest ‘pork barrel’ politics and unfairness. Have the Mayor and Deputy had self interested input? The Mangawhai Ecocare ratepayers get $37 per SUIP relief from a council that illegally dumped up to $30 million extra, disputed debt onto them, while the Mayors’ Dargaville gets $144 relief from their targeted rates, unfair relief for Ecocare ratepayers and those outside of Mangawhai and Dargaville, not involved with either Ecocare or the Dargaville pool or sewage fiascos, who are to pick up these tabs. Retrospective proposals of doubtful legality or morality. The recovery of $19 million development contributions and retention of $9.5 million illegally taken is another patch-up of doubtful legality. Long term unintended consequences. If foresters have 247% times present rates for up to 28 years before they have cash-flow, what will they do? Some indebted dairy farmers with 400% in roading rates may go under. Ratepayers unable to meet the increases will suffer hardship and could be sold up. Submissions are possible and recommended. Kaipara will suffer absolutely disastrous ongoing consequences unless rate increases are moderated. Action is now the Kaipara ratepayers responsibility. This LTP has grossly and irresponsibly provided totally inadequate provisions to assist the many who will be unable to pay.
Council leadership, must be improved. Improved governance and the pursuit of responsibilities and compensation is blocked by incompetence and self interest. The only way ratepayers can stop the Draft LTP may yet be a rates strike. Ratepayers must stop being ‘accessories to the fact’. Stop accepting illegal, incompetent council proposals, and immediately demand the draconian LTP rate changes are withdrawn. Debt and professional liabilities must be pursued. $30 million odd appears to have been illegally raised, and may not be the responsibility of ratepayers, this is not the time for ‘aggressive debt reductions’ and may not even be needed if district recovered major sums.
An excerpt from the Local Government Act 44 Report by Auditor-General on loss incurred by local authority • (1) For the purposes of this section and sections 45 and 46, a local authority is to be regarded as having incurred a loss to the extent that any of the following actions and omissions has occurred and the local authority has not been fully compensated for the action or omission concerned: (a) money belonging to, or administrable by, a local authority has been unlawfully expended; or (c) a liability has been unlawfully incurred by the local authority; or 46 Members of local authority liable for loss • (1) If the Auditor-General has made a report on a loss to a local authority under section 44, then, without limiting any other person’s liability for the loss, the loss is recoverable as a debt due to the Crown from each member of the local authority jointly and severally. The Crown may commence proceedings to recover the loss from any or all of those members. • (3) Any amount recovered by the Crown under subsection (2), less all costs incurred by the Crown in respect of the recovery, must be paid by the Crown to the local authority concerned.

Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Assn Viewpoint Bruce Rogan, President
The council is insolvent, and has been for years. It has been trading fraudulently with the auditor general’s connivance. The assumption has always been that whatever level of spending and debt was incurred, the ratepayers would be on the hook for it. Council says it needs to increase the total rate take by 31%. If you look at the facts it really needs to increase it by 100%, or more. 31% will get them through to next year. And next year, they will have screwed all they can get out of the Eastern side of the district, and it will have collapsed, so they will turn their guns on the West. Unless we all act to stop them NOW.
An administrator should be put in over the top of the council to ensure they do no more damage. Alongside the administrator, a receiver must be put in to put the council through a controlled bankruptcy. This will restructure the debt, and go after people who have received ratepayer money improperly. It will also catch current and former councillors and current and former employees who have behaved improperly. This is what the ratepayers of the district must insist on, and the best possible way to do that insisting is to stop paying rates. Yes, there might be some penalties added to the rates you don’t pay, but that is NOTHING compared to the penalties you will pay if this council is allowed to carry on.

American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850–1919) wrote:‘‘To sin by silence when we should protest, makes cowards out of men” Local government policies by way of district plans and its statutory ability to strike mandatory rateable tax, causes it to be involved in every aspect of a community’s daily life. We must never allow local government to endanger the wellbeing of our liberties, democratic freedoms, and our commercial enterprises that are the cornerstone of our community. The Kaipara District Council is proposing a new Long Term Community Plan that we believe will cause financial hardship to many of our Kaipara citizens and affect the economic viability of many commercial and farming enterprises. Despite all of the criticism and warnings levelled at the leadership of Kaipara District Council Mayor Tiller and Deputy Mayor Geange, that they were leading the Kaipara District Council into the financial abyss, they continued to deny up until recently, that the Kaipara District Council was at financial risk under their leadership.
At the Council meeting 24 February 2010, I did not get any support for my notice of motion that the Kaipara District Council ask the Minister of Local Government to carry out an independent, internal review of the Kaipara District Council’s operational structure — this to include a peer review of all management systems, regulatory consultancy services and whether the Kaipara District Council with its current projected financial forecast of incurring further high debt loading, has a sustainable future as an independent Local Government authority. The warnings given by leaders of the Kaipara community that the chickens would come home to roost have now proven to be true. My fellow Kaipara citizens and ratepayers, there is now a clear choice for the people of Kaipara. Stand up, speak up, protest, by sending a submission to the Kaipara District Council, in a simple letter stating that you do not support large rate increases and express your loss of confidence in the leadership of the Kaipara District Council. Stay silent and receive more of the same leadership and the slow destruction of our district, with a council that shows no vision, no ability, no hope and everincreasing rates.
They continued to support and state that they had full confidence in the former Chief Executive Mr Jack McKerchar, in spite of the warnings given.
The Minister of Local Government the Hon. David Carter stated on national television that the National Government plan to intervene in the affairs of a local authority where rates are 2, 3 and 4% above inflation.
When I was a councillor of the Kaipara District Council, they refused to support me in my role as finance portfolio holder, in my quest for financial summaries to be put before council on a monthly basis.
Kaipara’s 31% rate increase we hope will stimulate the Minister to stand up and show that he means business. The people of the Kaipara need to pressure the minister to act swiftly, as the Kaipara needs deeds not words.
They did not share my concerns over the ever-spiralling increased debt levels.
We can gain strength from the words of Ella Wheeler Wilcox, when we need to protest.

Setting the standard Your farm refrigeration questions answered With gypsy week approaching it’s a good time to look maintenance around the farm — and a for the dairy industry atbignecessary part of this in the dairy industry is making sure that
Northland agricultural company Advance Dairy and Pump are proud to have the backing and support of a nationwide organisation dedicated to best practice in their field. The Milking and Pumping Trade Association (MPTA) came into being to assure top quality results for dairy farmers who rely on their pumping equipment as the lifeblood of the industry. Much in the same way as Certified Builders or master plumbers have banded together to assure the highest standards in their professions, the MPTA has been working since 1932 to keep the vital dairy industry pumping. MPTA courses in such disciplines and milking machine maintenance and repair, water reticulation, hydraulic design and milk quality assurance have become an industry benchmark, and a strict code of practice is adhered to by all members. A big part of this code is about top-notch after sales service, and this is an area in which Advance Dairy and Pump excels. At this time of year it’s a good idea to take a look at pump technology around the farm — make sure it’s working at peak efficiency, especially in season-critical areas such as effluent ponds and water pumping. If things aren’t sounding right, or outflow is down, talking to an MPTA member like Advance Dairy and Pump is the logical choice — they can offer the best advice and the right equipment to keep things flowing on your farm.

To get the inside information on this vital aspect of farm maintenance we went to the source — Laser Electrical Dargaville’s Paul Emsden Q — Just a little background to start with — how long have you been in the refrigeration industry? A — I’ve been in the industry for 30 years, doing a variety of work from domestic refrigerators, cool rooms, water chillers right through to farm vat refrigeration. I’ve been working in the Dargaville area for eight years — many farmers know me by name! Q — Is it important to regularly service your dairy refrigeration plant? A — I suppose the question is what is your milk worth? If your milk is not at the required temperature you could be graded poorly, which will lead to a reduced payout. Fonterra requires milk to be below 18 degrees by the end of milking, and milk has to be cooled to 7 degrees or below after the completion of milking. It’s hard work for a machine to handle day in and day out, so your plant has to be in top order. Q — How often is a service required? A — Once at the beginning of the season is vital, and once at the height of summer (when cooling plants work the hardest) is highly recommended. Right now with many farms changing management for gypsy weeks it’s a chance to be pro-active with maintenance. rm able -Fa vail n O eA c rvi Se
Q — Have you any insights as to where on-farm milk cooling is heading? A — Fonterra are indicating that cooling requirements will only get more stringent. They believe NZ is behind the standard in on-farm milk cooling. I believe ultimately some form of pre-chilling will be required to lower the temperature of the milk before it gets to the silo. Q — How can I future proof my farm then? A — Here’s one example — we have a relationship with a company called Milfos who manufacture a product called an I –Converter. This glycol system snap chills the milk down to 4 degrees and makes most of the hot water you need in the process! Q — So if a farmer has an urgent problem and you are on another job what happens? A — Here at Laser Electrical we are lucky as we also have Bruce, Paul and John who have many years experience with on-farm refrigeration between them who can help me out so we really have you covered. Q — What happens if there is a breakdown after hours? A — We understand how important you refrigeration system is so for our clients we have a 24/7 call out system and as we have 4 people that can deal with any refrigeration emergencies we have you covered.

Time for farm changes As part of the annual farm changeover which happens from mid May to mid June — Gypsy Week — sharemilkers are shifting stock and councils across the country are reminding those invloved to make sure animals are prepared properly before cartage by standing them overnight It is just one facet of a very busy time of year for the dairy industry. By May most cows have stopped milking and from here on, the farmers’ focus is making sure condition is maintained’ The traditional date for changing farms is June 1. It used to be Gypsy Day, it became Gypsy weekend, then it took a week and now dairy farm numbers have expanded so much the pressure on home removal and stock transport firms is such it’s more like Gypsy month for dairy farm staff and their cows. Hundreds of sharemilkers, dairy workers and managers change jobs and homes. That has an impact not just on the

Material Girls has the X-Factor by Kim Munro
A full house attended the Dargaville Little Theatre on Saturday night for the opening of the theatre’s latest show — Material Girls
local artists Brooke Menzies and Bernadette Keoghan, along with Adrian Humm playing Lester Leeds and Anna Marie Cutts as Maria Pavara. The Material Girls repertoire includes popular 80s tunes, such as the Bonnie Tyler ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart, True Colours by Cyndi Lauper, and a hilarious rendition of Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’. The cast of colourful characters more than rewarded its audience with a solid, enjoyable and highly amusing performance in a cosy and intimate venue. The play runs until May 26.

Produced by Deborah Steele and directed by Keith Allen, the show centres on the all-girl line up of pop singers, Connie, Cheryl, Lynn and Glenda, called the Material Girls and played by Julianne Parkinson, Deborah Steele, Jessica McEwing and Brenda Polwart. The comical storyline follows the Material Girls’ transformation into a young, modern pop band. Success comes their way when their manager enters them into a TV music competition, complete with an ‘X-Factor’ style panel of judges including, of course, a Simon Cowell character. Glass tree latest attraction at Ernies A fascinating new addition to Ernie’s kumara farm park is a six-metre tall ‘bottle tree’. This is the first of two coloured trees to be constructed. “Thanks to local business people who have assisted erecting the poles, supplying bottles and to Ernie’s son Kevin for his help,” says Gordon Morfett from the Kauri Coast Promotions Society. “This farm park is fast becoming a huge draw card for tourists and locals alike. There is not a day that goes by without many visitors calling in and checking out this fantastic new attraction,” adds Gordon. “Full credit goes to Warren and May Suckling for having the foresight and courage to take on what looks likely to be one of Dargaville’s biggest fun and event centres in the future,” says Gordon. “It has been very exciting watching and helping this park to grow to what you see today. Many more ideas are in the making to help it grow even bigger.”
