Chris and Douglas Matich, from Ruawai, were fishing for mullet on their boat, Christina, when they saw “massive plumes of water going 30 feet in the air” some distance away. “I put the binoculars on and it was an orca, stuck on the Five Fathom Bank. We had seen a pod of around 20 around the harbour, chasing stingrays,” said Chris. The Matichs headed for the stranding and began pouring seawater over the drying whale as the tide ebbed out of the harbour. They also alerted Dorothy Quaife at North Kaipara Coastguard radio, who in turn contacted Dr. Ingrid Visser at the Orca Research Trust in Tutukaka. Dr Visser immediately headed to the scene, a two-hour journey, launching her boat from Tinopai. “When we got to the orca it was in about three feet of water,” said Chris. “Two hours later there was only 8 inches, and we just kept it wet and, I guess, calm. All the while, two other orcas were patrolling in the deeper water nearby.” Dr Visser arrived with Warkworth cameraman, Steve Hathaway, and the incident was filmed for a forthcoming television series on the New Zealand coast. She also immediately recognised the orca from many previous encounters. “It was Koru, identified by his distinctive curving dorsal fin. The last one was organised by Otamatea High School student, Daniel Woodward, who was excited to continue building the new park. Administrator of the Project Sk8t facebook page, Brenda Ratima, says it’s important for young people to take ownership of the park because it’s for them. Working teams have finished a feature called the funbox and are working on other skating attractions. The park will also include a large bowl, stairs, rails and a quarter pipe.

After starting his career on Auckland's North Shore, Constable Mackay was last based at Wellsford with an earlier stint at Orewa. A keen fisher and diver, he says the move to Mangawhai is a good fit, especially as he’s already familiar with the community, and the two-man Mangawhai station is as busy as at Wellsford but in different ways. “We're ‘it’ for frontline response as well as manning the station, and a lot of work here comes in over the front desk.”

 A trip to Feilding paid a big dividend when a Tangiteroria-bred Simmental bull calf took a major Beef Expo prize in the country’s premier stud stock showcase. Idesia Avatar, bred by Ray and Carol Cameron, was judged champion yearling in his breed, going on to make a healthy sale to a Meremere buyer. “It’s the first time we’ve entered a yearling in the led class,” says Ray – seen here with judge Jon Knorff. He says the win “really flies the flag” for the couple’s Idesia stud, with the Expo providing great exposure for their business since the first bull they took down five years ago topped the sale. “It’s the best possible advertising you can get, with breeders coming from all around the country.”

Tragedy and comedy to tour

Service aims to enable

Two very different touring productions are set to play east and west Kaipara in June. A play based on the life of the daughter of Irish literary giant James Joyce will have one performance on June 18 at Maungaturoto’s Otamatea Repertory Theatre as part of a nationwide tour. Set in 1920s Paris, Dancing in the Wake has a cast of three who use a blend of drama, dance and music to tell the story of Lucia Joyce, an aspiring dancer diagnosed with schizophrenia. Playwright and performer Jan Bolwell describes the play as “an exploration of what can happen to the talented child of a very famous parent in struggling for recognition and a sense of identity.” The performance is at 7.30pm on June 18, with bookings available through www.ort.org.nz. Coming out west to Dargaville on June 14 is So So Gangsta, a comedy show with a serious message which recently

decorating the quirky little piggy banks (first seen on the BNZ’s now-famous TV advertising campaign) and using the event to raise money for our courageous firefighters. Creativity and artistic flair come to the fore with the hotly contested ‘dress the piggy’ competition, and this year is proving no exception as chef pigs, biker pigs, racing pigs, hunter pigs and even the fabled Pig of Steel strut their stuff for charity. You can cast a vote for your favourite pig in a whole list of participating stores around town — votes cost a dollar, with the proceeds going to the Fire Service. After that, the whole crew will be on display at Dargaville BNZ for a popular vote, leading up to a charity auction and a big quiz night at the fire station. Get involved and help keep the big red trucks rolling for another 100 years — it’s a whole lot of fun for a very good cause indeed.

Remember 2012’s ‘parade of pigs’ — the characterful porcine creations delivered to Dargaville by the BNZ and local businesses? Last year the little porkers raised thousands of dollars for Project Promise, and now they’re back, supporting our local fire brigade. It’s the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Service’s centenary in September, commemorating the foundation of the service back in 1913. Just this year the 27 members of the Fire Service have responded to nearly 100 callouts, saving lives and preventing disaster across the region. Throughout the years the all-volunteer crews who have served our community have acquitted themselves with bravery and dedication, as in early 2013 when they pitched in to battle raging bush fires at Pouto. That’s why it’s great to see caring local businesses and community organisations

 Artist Pauline Gough in her studio with her painting, Night Sail, a finalist in the Cliftons Art Prize

Ten paintings were selected from over 50 entries for the Auckland region and her painting, Night Sail, was among them. “It’s not my favourite painting,” laughs Pauline, “but a lot of people have told me they like it. I had a lot of fun with it, experimenting with a limited palette and using a rubber spatula.” It took the self taught acrylic painter ‘two to three days’ to complete and she says she aims “to paint with joy working quickly to maintain a fresh result.” The painting will be exhibited in Auckland and if she wins, she will go into the finals, competing against artists from Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore as well as the finalist from the Wellington region.

Sixty years on from when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first summited Mount Everest, assistant principal of Ruawai College, Charmaine Lulich, trekked to base camp, around 18,000 feet, during school holidays. Before attempting to climb the world’s highest mountain, 29,029 feet, climbers live at base camp for around two months getting their bodies used to the high altitude with low oxygen levels. While Charmaine wonders what reaching the top would be like, she says in reality she doesn’t plan on attempting to climb Everest, which requires US$50,000, a Nepalese climbing permit and full mountaineering experience and equipment. The trek from a small village, Lukla, to base camp usually takes 12 days but Charmaine did it in 10, walking 170km which includes two days climbing to acclimatise to the altitude. Free film workshop

The Outlook for Someday Project will provide a free film workshop in Dargaville for young people. Director of Connected Media, the charitable trust which runs the project, David Jacobs, says the objective is to grow a generation of sustainability story tellers. Last year around 20 attended the Dargaville workshop learning film techniques including framing, cutting and adding a soundtrack. Host, Chris Fulop, says he was impressed with what came out of the workshop and encourages students between year seven and 13 as well

as their teachers and youth workers to participate. The workshop provides tools to compete in a film challenge where young people up to the age of 24 make a sustainability themed short film. Last year’s winner, 16-year old Natasha Bishop from Wellington, has just had her film, Arboraceous, nominated for the Japan Wildlife Film Festival. The workshop is May 30, 9am to 4.30pm, at the Lion of Judah/Rock Solid Building, Dargaville. To register: http://project.theoutlookforsomeday. net/workshop-registration ■

Meeting bestselling authors Eight Ruawai College students travelled to the Readers and Writers festival held in Auckland recently and heard from a variety of writers including international bestselling author, Patrick Ness (seated). He holds his new book, A Monster Calls, and the students say their experience meeting him along with young adult fiction writer Libba Bray as well as Oliver Phommavanh, and New Zealand documentary maker and writer, Quinn Berentson encouraged them to read more.

Personal affairs At Hammonds Law we often encounter situations where people have not put a Will or Enduring Power of Attorney in place. I would like to give a very brief overview of what these documents are and why they are so important.

Will

A Will is a legal document which essentially sets out your wishes as to what is to happen to your property after your death. In your Will you will appoint an executor/ trustee who is the person that will manage the affairs of your estate. Such a person should be someone who is competent and trustworthy. You can appoint a professional such as a lawyer or accountant to act as your trustee. You can also appoint more than one executor/trustee. With a Will in place, the affairs of your estate becomes an easier process than if you do not have a Will. Without a Will, a different legal process is required, called Letters of Administration. Unfortunately this can be a more involved and costly process, using up some of the funds of your estate. Therefore it is vital that should you own property, you put a Will in place to ensure it passes to those you intend it to.

Enduring Powers of Attorney Enduring Powers of Attorney are documents whereby you appoint someone (an attorney) who can act on your behalf if at some time in the future you are no longer able to act for yourself, usually due to mental or physical health problems. There are two types of Enduring Powers of Attorney, one for care and welfare and one for property. The same attorney can be appointed for both types of

 Alistair Hammond

Enduring Powers of Attorney or you can appoint different attorneys. Again, your attorney needs to be someone you trust to act in your best interests should you no longer be able to do so. It is vital that Enduring Powers of Attorney are in place before someone becomes incapable of managing their affairs. If this is not done, a different process is required which needs an application to the Courts to appoint an attorney and can be very expensive. A Power of Attorney can also be put in place, on a temporary basis, so that you can appoint someone to handle your affairs for a short time, such as if you are overseas or admitted to hospital. Should you have any queries about Wills or Powers of Attorney please do not hesitate to contact me. ■

An antique boutique  by Paul Campbell

Collecting old powder compacts might be a niche interest, but for Pahi resident, Louise Allpress, it was the consequence of a 20-year career in antiques which has led ultimately to a new boutique antique outlet at Matakohe. “I saw this cottage in a garden, made some inquiries, and here I am – at A Fine Vintage, next to Matakohe House and along from  Louise Allpress, and Keeper, open for business the Kauri Museum,” In an environment of fragile china, she said. “The cottage and its antique crystal ware and exquisite porcelain, collectables, its vintage linens, and visitors to A Fine Vintage may be much more, will be open four days surprised to meet Louise’s ‘shop a week from Friday to Monday. But I assistant’. His name is Keeper, and he offers am also available at other times, for a warm welcome on the pathway to appointments, as I am only a phone the cottage and its treasures. call and ten minutes away.”

 New Manager Ravi Reddy (left) and long time staff member Jo Mrkusich at the Dargaville Caltex

New manager, Ravi Reddy, says advantages come with the takeover. They no longer charge credit card fees and are able to offer better discounts on store products. Petrol prices will stay relatively the same says Ravi as the price is dependent on the competitors in the area however they take almost all fuel discounts available. “We take MTA vouchers, AA smartfuel, Countdown vouchers and even Z cards,” says staff member, Jo Mrkusich from Dargaville. She has worked there for 12 years with the company changing hands four times during her employment. “The best part about this job is the customers,” says Jo and she knows almost everyone who comes into the store. She says Ravi is a ‘dag’ and appreciates the family values of the new

owners, the Patterson family based in Albany, Auckland. “If there’s anything I need to do with my kids — they are good at giving me time off.” Ravi was an assistant manager at a Caltex in Rotorua and moved to Dargaville when Star Metro Holdings took over from NDS Fuel in April. ■

Promoting and advertising local business

A business owner has to wear many hats. Apart from running a business, you are managing staff, preparing GST returns, complying with OSH, the list goes on. It’s easy to spend a lot of time working in the business and not on it.

It’s like driving a car without a dashboard: if you do not know where you are going, you don’t know how much petrol is left in the tank or if your headlights are working properly, you know you’ll end up at the side of the road at some stage.

As a bank, we deal with a wide range of businesses and if one thing has become clear over the last few years, it is those business owners that have surrounded themselves with the right advisors that have been able to weather the recent financial storm or have even been able to grow their business.

At Westpac we want to share our knowledge with you in case you feel like you are wearing too many hats, or if you feel like you are driving without a dashboard. We welcome you to join one of our free Manage your Money workshops that will be held in Dargaville during the months of May and June.

The point we are making here is simple: just selling a good product or providing a certain service is no longer good enough, you can’t disagree with that.

And one of the biggest jobs to take care of all year round is the control and management of weeds and pests, both of which can cost serious time and money to eradicate if left unchecked. Modern mechanisation makes the job easier, introducing spray systems which can be deployed from backpack units, quad bikes and even tractors for the really big jobs. But the best resource for farmers in the fight against invasive species is a good supplier of spray materials and equipment — someone who knows the science behind the practice. That’s just what Primehort’s new Dargaville based Spray Centre promises — a one stop shop for farmers to source all their agri spray essentials. Located just before the Wairoa River bridge, their

bright green building is a new branch for the Kaiwaka based agricultural support business; one with a specialist focus on pasture management solutions for the agricultural sector. It’s a resource which should be well utilised by the strong rural sector in the western Kaipara, and even more so with an immense ‘one dollar reserve’ auction to kick things off! This Thursday the new Spray Centre will host a massive auction event, with all kinds of farm equipment, chemicals and tools going under the hammer from only a single gold coin. There are even full sized Compass trailers up for bidding, and its a great chance to get acquainted with your new rural support professionals over a free BBQ lunch! ■

More power for west coast farmers Polaris quad bikes and UTVs have become a familiar sight in rural New Zealand — the North American built machines offer a great mix of power, technology and value for Kiwi farmers, who have been keen adopters of the marque. Machines such as the diesel powered Ranger and the versatile Sportsman 500 quad are able to fulfil a multitude of roles on the farm, from hauling fencing supplies to checking on stock to spraying weeds and gorse — and now a new dealership servicing the western Kaipara is set to bring the benefits of Polaris’ tried and tested tech to a wider market. CA Motorcycles, situated just outside of Dargaville in the small town of Aratapu, already enjoys a reputation for hard work and skill when it comes to keeping the rural offroad fleet moving. Recreational off road bikers also make up a large part of owner Carl Adnitt’s customer base, and he’s renowned for being able to source parts for all makes and models, fit tyres and even track down top quality low mileage imports through his contacts overseas.

The move to supplying a single brand of new quads and UTVs was a logical one for this growing business, and Carl has also moved with the times, hiring a new technician to keep up with demand. Simon Preesman comes to CA Motorcycles after a tenure with Whangarei’s Planet Honda dealership, and he’s glad to have joined the

Kaipara’s newest Polaris outlet at this time of change and expansion. Along with the shift to supplying and servicing new Polaris models, CA Motorcycles is expanding physically, too, with a third bay being prepared to accommodate new customers. Carl notes that while Polaris will be the backbone of his new vehicle sales, he’s still open for business when it comes to servicing and repairing all makes and models. After all, it’s the loyalty and support

of the west Kaipara’s farmers which has made all of this possible! With the latest versions of both the hugely popular Ranger 400, the versatile Ranger diesel, and a catalogue of quad bikes spanning every pursuit from sports to serious work, there’s a whole lot to see right now at your new local Polaris dealership. The skills and techniques of massage have come down to modern health practitioners from many cultures, all of whom recognised the recuperative benefits of this form of treatment. Now modern science confirms what tradition has imparted — massage can undo the damage caused by a stressful lifestyle, with often far-reaching effects. Here in Dargaville Carolyn Soole has been treating patients with relaxation massage and foot reflexology for over four years. Her successful Body Kneads business in Edwin Arcade is an oasis of calm in the main street of the town, where folks can put aside stress, aches and pains. Massage can do far more than simply temporarily soothe tired and ‘knotted’ muscles, and the science of foot reflexology can go just as far, using nerve connections to target organs, muscles and areas of concern throughout the body. Recently Carolyn has been joined by long-time massage exponent Graeme

Powdrell — a well known figure to local sportspeople, who has joined Body Kneads to add his skills to the company’s repertoire. With an in-depth knowledge of sports massage (both to prevent injury and to recover from the ‘big hits’ taken on the field) and deep tissue massage, Graeme’s fields of expertise fit perfectly with Carolyn’s, offering something for everyone — whether they just need to relax, or they are suffering from a specific ache or injury. Graeme has an additional insight into recovery from injury. An accident suffered while serving as a racetrack medic damaged his hand and forced him to give up massage for a time. But knowing what was damaged, and how it could be rebuilt gave Graeme confidence that he would one day be able to offer his skills to the public once more. Now, with his recovery complete, he joins Carolyn at Body Kneads, replacing outgoing massage therapist Jade, who has left to start a family. ■

Health And Fitness Bodybuilders to compete in Germany

Hospice comes of age

 by Rose Rees-Owen

Could Donna and Nigel Randell of Dargaville become bodybuilding’s Mr and Mrs Universe?

 Hospice Kaipara volunteers, Mary McLeod and Jim Dodd, prepare to cut the cake with the help of Jean Finlayson, who with Marlene Calder set up Hospice’s original Kowhai Room at Dargaville Hospital 21 years ago. More than a hundred people celebrated the birthday at the Dargaville Town Hall, dancing the night away to the sounds of the Basin City Big Band.

After winning their classes at the New Zealand national championships, as well as the couples division, they made the cut to compete against some of the world’s best bodybuilders at the NAC Universe Championships in Hamburg, Germany. They leave New Zealand in November giving themselves five days before the competition to prepare which includes flushing their body of water to give them muscular definition. “We drink six litres of water a day then a couple days before we cut it down to one litre and then the day we’re competing we take a sip when we have to,” says Donna. They will begin a strict diet of lean protein, clean carbohydrates, and no frills food 20 weeks before the

competition taking a break on Sundays. “We eat what we want on Sunday afternoons to keep us sane,” says Donna, “they are still relatively healthy snacks but they are things we’re not allowed during the week — like cheese and crackers or almonds.” They will be away for 12 days costing them around $10,000 which they have to cover themselves and have begun fundraising. As well as raffling $520 worth of bodybuilding products from their shop, Jon Matich Surfwear have chipped in donating over $600 worth of goodies to either raffle or auction. “It’s really great to know we have the backing of the community,” says Donna. See them at Randell’s Suzuki to buy a raffle ticket or offer support. ■

Student on the money Working bee for walkers A design by a nine-year-old Dargaville boy for a five dollar note has been judged a winner by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

 by Sheri O’Neill

A recent working bee at Ruawai’s Whenuanui Scenic Reserve has prompted a reminder for Kaipara residents to get out and enjoy their local walks.

 Peter Godfrey, Jim Simpson, Jason Falwasser, Evan Robinson and Karen Campbell take a break at Whenuanui Scenic Reserve  Dargaville Lions, Warren Osbaldiston and Alan Peden, with Semisi Apai and his winning design

exchange still out in the community. So far the project has used the proceeds of more than 14 tonnes of it to fund children to programmes such as Spirit of Adventure, The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre and Discoveries for Teens. Dargaville Primar y School’s principal, Alan Russek, says the paint vouchers will be used to extend the murals around the school, painted by Semisi and his fellow students, to the junior area. ■

Semisi Apai, one of seven winners in the nationwide children’s competition, received $400 in paint vouchers for his school, Dargaville Primary, donated by Resene, sponsors of Heads Up for Kids, a Lions Clubs New Zealand project. The designs were judged by the Reserve Bank’s head of currency, Brian Hayr, and Lion, Roy Peterson. The goal of Heads Up for Kids is to collect and process $1 million of the estimated $100 million in unaccounted old New Zealand currency and foreign

Ruawai Lion, Dorothy Simpson, says several volunteers spent a pleasant day tidying the track through the reserve. “It’s a beautiful bit of bush,” she says. “Since it was fenced off to stock some years ago there’s been a lot of regeneration and it’s full of birds, including wood pigeons.” Whenuanui Scenic Reserve is accessed from Robertson Road to the north of Ruawai and is managed by the Kaipara District Council. Around 40 hectares in size, it provides one of several small but important ‘island habitats’ within the

Toka Toka Ecological District, of which only 7.4% is listed by the Department of Conservation as comprised of significant natural areas. The wellmarked loop track is an easy hour’s walk through nikau and puriri, and takes in a grove of kauri trees. Dorothy says another enjoyable Ruawai walk is along the stop bank from the wharf to Simpson Road. “It might also be worth checking out the stop bank in the other direction, towards Naumai, which could reward walkers with a view of the pelican flock now in residence in the area.” ■
