p Some cars were a lot cleaner than others after being washed by keen year 7 and 8 players from the Otamatea AIMS Netball Team in Kaiwaka last Sunday. The carwash was to raise funds towards a $10,000 target that will help cover the cost of attending the week-long Anchor AIMS Games held in the Bay of Plenty region during September. The games give 11, 12 and 13-year-olds an opportunity to compete as an individual or in a team against the best of their age in 20 different sports. Organiser Jodi Bennetto was pleased with the fundraiser’s outcome: “The kids did really well today — it was a huge success.”

Emails were sent out last week from operator Sue Taylor to say that “after nearly nine years of operating the Dargaville and Kauri Coast Visitor Information Centre we have decided to close. “The Kaipara District Council operated an i-Site in the past, but when
they closed it we opened one next to the Woodturners Gallery; this way we could share the building, phone costs, eftpos costs etc, and of course, my time. The council didn’t fund us — we funded it ourselves. “We have offered the Kaipara District Council the opportunity to rent the
building so the Visitor Information Centre can remain open. We hoped that the council, who want more visitors/tourists to the Kauri Coast, would reopen the i-Site, but this hasn’t happened.” Ms Taylor said the closure would take effect from August 1. continued on page 3 …

Rahui action accelerates u by Paul Campbell
Momentum is building for a rahui to be declared over 1,000 hectares of land in Dome Valley that has been earmarked for an Auckland rubbish landfill, which opponents say threatens to pollute the Hoteo River catchment and through this, the entire Kaipara Harbour. A public meeting to pursue the rahui proposed by the Fight the Tip protest group will be held on Sunday, June 9 at the Wellsford Community Centre from 1pm to 5pm.” The essence of the proposal under the Resource Management Act 1991 is stated as: ‘Bur ying paru (rubbish) in Papatuanuku (Earthmother) desecrates the tapu of our Earthmother. As kaitiaki (guardians), we have a responsibility to care for our Earthmother who in turn nurtures, protects and provides all the sustenance required for te hunga ora (the living). We cannot stand by and let our moana be desecrated by the poisons that will flow out of Hoteo landfill. ‘As kaitiaki we have a responsibility to place a political rahui, aukati over the whenua to prevent the landfill beside the Hoteo River.’ Fight the Tip organisers are hoping for a huge turnout at the June 9 meeting and landfill opponent, Marama Pairama, is encouraging Kaipara Harbour residents to gather in Wellsford. “We need community mobilisation to deal with community concerns. I am trying to motivate and encourage whanau that links back to the harbour by their genealogy to protect the environment,” she says.
p Fight the Tip campaigner, Marama Pairata
“I work with Maori in public health, and it’s my duty to educate and advise; this rubbish tip plan is just not right — the Hoteo river and the Kaipara harbour are gathering places for food.” She adds there is another reason to guard against pollution from the planned tip. “We are trying to create a waka ama club for area youngsters — apart from them accessing whitebait and eels. The harbour is already sick with sediment from farm runoff. A Dome rubbish dump leak would kill the river and the harbour. A rubbish dump could cause critical damage.” Marama can be contacted for meeting advice on 027 839 6586. ¢

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora Going to the dogs, literally, in the next few weeks Kaipara District Council will be rounding up one of the parts of local government that exercises people most — dogs. Covering from rough huntaways to pampered pooches, our Kaipara District Policy on Dogs and Dog Management Bylaw is being reviewed from top to tail. 240 submitters have contributed here, and nearly two days of hearings and deliberations will be followed by adoption by Council of a new bylaw before 30 June. With 399 pages of written submissions, there’s plenty for us to chew on and I thank everyone who’s speaking up — you’re not howling at the moon; every submission is being carefully considered. Fur’s been flying on the subject of wandering dogs particularly in Dargaville town, and an urgent review of the Council services relating to wandering dogs and stock across Kaipara is soon to be reported to Council. Speaking of roads, before winter comes our mild autumn presents just the right kind of damp roads for a busy season of road grading and heavy-metalling of our Kaipara roads. Not all of the 1200km unsealed network can be graded before the heavy rains come, but our road engineers have been unleashed again for the season with a prioritised programme of works for the three graders on Kaipara roads. Please keep patient as we continue to work on what some would call our doggone roading network, and drive to the changing conditions. You’d be barking up the wrong tree to think we’re aiming for anything less than Best In Show here.

Bringing a town together
Dahlias for Dementia
u by Andy Bryenton
Fundraisers for the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust have come up with a new plan to add to the current target of a million dollars as its contribution to financing the planned $3.6m dementia unit at the Riverview Rest Home.
Last Sunday was a day of fun and celebration for the families who visited Te Kopuru’s newest outdoor attraction; a children’s playground built on the site of the town’s former bowling club.

p Dahlias for Dementia organisers from left: Rae Roadley, Karen Smales and Marge Paton — not present Anne Pryde
p Crowds gathered to celebrate the opening of Te Kopuru’s new family-friendly park complex
Seeing the potential of the open and flat green space, the community rallied support from a diverse group of helpers and sponsors to design and erect a modern timber and steel framed playground, which promotes physical activity and exercise next door to a new basketball half-court. The park was opened with a traditional blessing as a large contingent of families came to celebrate with the
help of games, activities, fire engine rides and a sausage sizzle. The community team that pushed for the new facility has further plans with a design competition challenging kids to come up with innovative uses for the park space. Ideas such as a BMX track have been suggested to complement a growing hub for young people and their families in Te Kopuru. ¢
“At present, we are at $305,000,” says trust chair, Craig Fergus, ”but we are expecting to add substantially to this with funds expected, coming in soon that will see it reach some $550,000.” Now a group of ladies led by local, Karen Smales, have got together under the slogan of Dahlias for Dementia, to plan an extensive garden and house tour from Maungaturoto to Matakohe. “It’s not until next year, on February 22 and 23,” said Karen. “We need to get those dates out there as there is usually a lot happening and we need
to ‘book’ the time. At present, we have some 20 gardens with some of those also opening their homes.” Prominent on the list of visits will be Totara House, attached to The Kauri Museum, where the late Mavis Smith raised prize-winning blooms, as well as the gardens of Sir Lockwood and Lady Alexandra Smith. “I had the idea for this tour while working in my own garden,” said Karen. “There was a similar event run here 10 years ago by the high school, which was very successful, so I thought another tour would be a good way to raise some money.” ¢

Bank backs local netball Citizen Award nominations Dargaville’s Selwyn Park Primary School has received new netball gear after making an application to ANZ asking for support to take their sport up a level.
p Selwyn students and school staff at the netball gear presentation
Teacher and sports coordinator Tui Hutchinson applied for support because the school has no funds to purchase essential items like netballs and uniforms. “We were only going to register the one team this year due to not having many uniforms until I applied for the ANZ grant that allowed us the opportunity to be presented netball equipment for two teams. I have registered 14 players this year, and we are so happy and grateful for the grant. “The equipment gives us hope and encouragement to have a great season. The equipment will also enable the entire school the benefits of the use of netball balls.” ANZ head
of sponsorship, Sue McGregor said “the new gear will help netballers to train to the best of their abilities and step on court with confidence,“ adding that netball communities across the country have received $700,000 to help them achieve their aspirations. “We are proud to support Kiwi netballers at every level, from the grassroots players right up to the elite athletes in the ANZ Premiership. We hope that Selwyn Park Primary School netball players feel supported to be the best they can be and play with confidence.” Applications to get ANZ On Your Team are still open — to apply, visit anzcourtside.co.nz. ¢
Kaipara District Council is calling “last chance” nominations for its Citizen Awards, which have been resumed as an annual event after a nine-year suspension, with nominations closing this coming Friday, May 31 at 4.30pm. The awards were an annual event from 2001 to 2012 and are awarded in recognition of substantial service, usually of a voluntary nature or beyond normal employment, benefitting Kaipara and its people. Nominees will have generally carried out predominantly voluntary work, but payment for services will not necessarily disqualify receiving an award. Applications will be assessed on their personal leadership, inspiration,
sacrifice or devotion to a cause or made a significant contribution to the wellbeing of the Kaipara district and its citizens. It is not necessary to have the consent of the person or organisation being nominated, and a committee, comprised of three councillors will assess those that are received. Council can acknowledge as many or as few recipients as it sees fit and, at its discretion, host a formal ceremony to recognise the recipients.

Adventure meets education Eight year 13 students from Dargaville High School have braved nature and the elements in a recent four-day survival camping experience, during which they and their teacher built shelters, free-dived for seafood, spear-fished, cooked over an open fire and got up close and personal with the great Northland outdoors.
p Rolf Weight and students
Teacher Rolf Weight has been conducting this educational and character building exercise annually for 22 years, but this recent camp with the students of his sport and recreation class is to be his last. The ex-army educator is held in high regard for what he’s brought to the curriculum, with one participant saying: “He’s contributed massively, and we can’t thank him enough for allowing us and previous students this experience.” Sport and recreation is a year 13 optional class, which covers skills such as PADI accredited scuba diving qualifications, useful for adventure tourism careers or in maritime
construction and aquaculture. The trip to Paradise Bay and Wekarua Island, just north of Taupo Bay in the northeast, was a chance to camp, fish, kayak and get back to nature for the close-knit class. For the record, the biggest fish caught was a forty-seven-pound kingfish speared while diving without scuba gear. From insight into how our ancestors survived in pre-technological times, through to fostering an appreciation for the natural world, Mr Weight’s 22-year legacy has created lasting memories in many, many lives. The good news is that his incoming replacement teacher is enthusiastic about keeping the tradition alive. ¢
Autism spectrum assistance u by Andy Bryenton
Help is at hand for parents caring for kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), in the form of the Children’s Autism Foundation, who are coming to Dargaville this week to hold a workshop and Outreach Day on May 29 and 30. Autism is a condition, which is often misunderstood by the public, reduced to stereotypes or confused by misrepresentation of its causes and outcomes. Latest statistics tell us that at least 1 in 100 children will have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children’s Autism Foundation’s experienced, qualified family consultants guide, support, and provide practical, family-centred solutions that make a significant difference in the lives of families living with autism. “One of the most frequent questions we are asked is ‘how do I help my child to make friends and get on with other children better?” says foundation spokesperson Jo Sutton. “This workshop will cover some simple strategies that will enable parents, educators and caregivers to better support their ASD child in developing social skills.” Jo says that hearing other families share their challenges and successes brings everyone together, and many a friendship has been started at a Children’s Autism Foundation workshop. The Understanding Autism and Social Skills workshop

Impressions through the lens

Exercise for sharper minds u by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville Camera Club opened an exhibition of artfully composed and unique works at the Muddy Waters Gallery last Friday, showcasing the skill of some of our creative local photographers.
Mathematics teacher and game designer Detlef Wortmann has been helping young people learn about the world of numbers for five decades, as well as coming up with fun ways to puzzle, perplex and engage the brains of people young and old.
p Fun Maths lives up to its name, with a simple premise and fast-paced play that poses puzzling questions p Dargaville’s camera club are proud to present a new exhibition which blends photography and fine art into a harmonious whole
The exhibition, aptly titled Photography as art, captures an eclectic mix of images through the lens, with techniques applied which are more usually the domain of the brush-and-canvas artist. Running from May 24 through to June 7, this multiroom collection represents works by many members of the active Dargaville club, the culmination of months of preparation; and of course, that flash of inspiration as the perfect subject
comes into focus. From landscapes to nature scenes, vivid colour to stark monochrome, this exhibition sets out to prove definitively that painting with light on the lens is as subtle and infinitely varied a pursuit as painting with oils or watercolours. Opening night was well attended, and patrons were full of praise for the creativity on display. Entry to view the exhibition is free to the public, daily at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Hokianga Road. ¢
Now the Dargaville resident has hit upon a new way to make maths fun, by taking it out of the textbook and into an engaging and puzzling card game, which challenges players to race against the clock (and each other) to solve deceptively simple number puzzles. Easy to learn, even for nonmathematicians, his Fun Maths card set is really three games in one, and its applications for stimulating the logical, puzzle-cracking side of the brain go beyond the classroom. Detlef, who is the author of six other brain-
teasing games published in England, says that his latest creation is perfect not just for the very young, but also older people who want a change from regular card games and a chance to keep their minds fit and healthy in a retirement home setting. Comparable in ease of access to other number-themed card games such as Mattel’s popular UNO, but with a more puzzle-orientated twist and a more compact deck, this Dargaville-designed game may be the next numerical brain teaser to take the world by storm. ¢

Customer care the cornerstone u by Andy Bryenton
Customer satisfaction is rated as the single highest reason why a buyer will return to a business, and it even beats out price as the factor, which leads to good ‘word of mouth’ referrals. Moreover, what do people mean when they say they feel valued as a customer? A major survey among US retail shoppers proves the case with numbers. Ninety-seven per cent of customers queried said they would tell others about very good or excellent customer service experiences. A massive 70 per cent indicated they would spend more money with a company that has excellent customer service. More than half (59 per cent) would try a new company to receive better customer service, rather than trying a new company based on savings or even on product reviews. That is important because loyal customers are valuable. It costs up to six times more to attract a new customer than to retain a loyal and steadfast fan of your business. How do the best of the best make their customers stay loyal? It seems the biggest attraction is to answer people’s questions quickly and with
confidence. This factor outweighs even the most obvious; providing an issuefree experience. If something does go wrong and the issue is solved promptly ‘once and for all’, correspondents gave the company involved a better score than if nothing had gone wrong at all. Turn offs in terms of this vital interaction include robotic call centres with long wait times, staff who are perceived as untrained or ignorant, refusals to rectify obvious flaws or mistakes, and long-winded or confusing answers filled with ‘corporate speak’ to try and evade simple questions. How many people said they would put up with these factors to pay a very low price for a product or service? Only three per cent. A full 85 per cent would pay substantially more to deal with friendly, honest and knowledgeable staff. Thus, the key to good customer service would seem to be the
same factor, which makes any great relationship or friendship. Clear, honest communication.
From the testimonials for local companies on these pages, you can see that it works! ¢

While we were looking for a property in the Kaipara, we were fortunate to come across Jill Wilson from First National. Her approach was no-nonsense, and down to earth, which we appreciated very much. Our search took us all over the place, and Jill was very patient and understanding of our needs. Once we decided on the property we wanted, she worked very hard to achieve the sale, both with the vendors and ourselves, but we did not feel pressured or hassled, as can sometimes happen in these situations. We would thoroughly recommend Jill as a real estate agent. She was a very easy person to deal with and we were impressed by her integrity. A.L & R.L

Claudia in Dargaville was wonderful, nothing was ever too much trouble, we were texting at 7pm at night because we are in Auckland, she always replied and went the extra mile to track down the kind of urn we wanted saying 'leave it with me', so accommodating, so respectful, made everything so easy. Staying streets ahead u by Andy Bryenton
They used to call it the ‘total performance’ philosophy when Ford was at the forefront of racing in the middle of the 20th century. Win on Saturday, sell cars on Monday was the mantra of a generation of marketers and engineers. To a greater or lesser extent, it worked. Take a look at many of the big names in roadgoing cars, and you’ll find that the more everyday models are often backed up by a super powerful and sometimes even legendary ‘halo’ model. Would so many four-door, naturally aspirated Nissan Skylines have been sold were it not for the monster GT-R version, which demolished lap times worldwide? How about the classic race pedigree of Alfa Romeo, Bentley or Ferrari? This kind of relationship between the track and the road builds reputations. The reason for this is twofold, but one of the big arguments is that it takes great engineers to make a winning vehicle. Those same bright minds are also employed, making the more usual fare, which comes down the production line, so you know it’s been developed by the best and sharpest. This concept is being put to a brand new test right now, as Kymco, the world’s biggest producer of quads, bikes and scooters, drop a bombshell on the world of superbikes. Will it transfer to a boost for their onfarm sales of quads and side-by-sides? Certainly, the brains trust behind the SuperNEX electric sports bike has done an impeccable job of wringing speed from voltage. From 0–250 km/h in just above 10 seconds, for starters. They have deliberately done away with

a single speed electric motor approach, which delivers maximum performance in the middle of the powerband. Instead, a six-speed gearbox delivers the kind of precision shifts that are a joy to execute when using a sports bike to its full potential. It’s a study in modern design, a simple idea well executed, and a machine of extreme power all in one. That is a fine reflection on the
Kymco brand in general, of course. One must assume, as the Taiwanese brand unleashes a supercar-fast electric two-wheeler, that their engineering for models like the MXU400 ATV and the UXV700i must be similarly top notch. ¢

Six decades on patrol
There’s something in all of us that wants to be a bit different and hence steers us away from the obvious choice and toward the other contenders. It’s the little voice that made it possible for the neon green Lamborghini Miura to exist in a world dominated by little red Ferraris. The urge to not buy the most obvious choice, no matter what kind of vehicle you’re considering adding to the garage. In terms of offroaders, that means looking past the ubiquitous Toyota Land Cruiser to a vehicle with similar pedigree and some big achievements of its own. The Nissan Patrol. Launched in 1951, the Patrol was a serious military-style off-roader when it debuted, only slightly softening its hard edges by the time a four-litre inline six P60 Patrol was the first vehicle to cross Australia’s unforgiving Simpson Desert. By the 1980s, when the big Patrol and Safari models we still see on Kiwi roads were being produced, the vehicle had become immense, close to five metres long and two wide, packing the legendarily bulletproof RD28T turbo diesel as a popular option under the hood. These Patrols (rebadged as a Ford Maverick in Australia) were ideal platforms for building competitive too. The modern Nissan Patrol is a far more refined beast, with an interior the equal of many of its pricier rivals. Alongside the wood panelling and leather, the 2019 Patrol packs in a host of electronic

560 Newton metres, in fact, enough to tow even the heftiest boat, which can fit on a trailer, and close to 400 horsepower too. The Patrol may have become refined in its later years, but it still packs an almighty punch when it comes to power, and the ability to tackle arduous terrain. It’s definitely up there with the Land Cruiser when it comes to comparing apples to apples in the large SUV market, and while it may not have the badge appeal of some of the ‘deluxe’ 4x4s now hitting the forecourts; it’s got a pedigree of its own that’s quite formidable. ¢

ATTENTION LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS
Does your Community Group have a project on the go or even in the pipeline and you need a few extra $$ in the coffers to help you get that project done? The Northland Field Days has some funds that were very kindly donated to us by one of our exhibitors, Iplex Pipelines, at our 2019 event after their very successful on-site auction. These funds were given to us on the condition that we distribute them out to local community groups. We have several grants of up to $500 available and all you need to do to apply is write to us and tell us briefly what your project is and what you have done so far to fundraise towards this project. Applications for these grants will close on Friday 7th June at 5pm and the grants will be allocated by the Northland Field Days Committee at their meeting later in June. Post your application letter to: PO Box 103, Dargaville 0310 or email it to: info@northlandfielddays.co.nz
