p Veteran firefighter Gary Murdoch was recently presented with the Queen’s Service Medal by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for his services to Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the community. Mr Murdoch has been involved with the Volunteer Fire Brigade for 52 years and was one of eight firefighters from around the country to be presented with a QSM. “I was a little bit nervous during the ceremony,” he said. “But Jacinda Ardern put us quite at ease.” These days Mr Murdoch is no longer on the front line and helps out around the station doing small but important tasks.

The Million Metres Streams Project is spearheading the fundraising campaign and aims to raise $60,000 by December. “We are excited to be involved in a project of this scale,” said project coordinator, Alaina Pomeroy. Funds raised by Million Metres will go into coordinating the planting, monitoring the plants and the health

of the harbour. The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group, Te Arai Native Nursery and Reconnecting Northland will provide 100,000 native plants a year for the project. IKHMG programme manager, William Wright, says the project plan is for a period of five years with planting commencing in 2019.

“Seven hundred thousand tonnes of sediment falls on the Kaipara Harbour floor every year. We are trying to reduce sedimentation as quickly as possible. It will take generations to bring the state of the harbour back to some resemblance of what we had 50 years ago or how it was prior to deforestation. continued on page 3 …

Regional council winners Northland Regional Council staff have a good reason to smile after scooping half of the national awards on offer at the Association of Local Government Information Management autumn conference.

p Sarah Botur, Gail Yearbury-Murphy and Janelle Palmer scooped three awards on offer at the recent Association of Local Government Information Management autumn conference

The council’s Geographic Information System manager Gail Yearbury-Murphy was named GIS Professional of the Year while her colleague and Geospatial Systems Analyst, Janelle Palmer, won the GIS Project of the Year. A third staff member, council’s records manager Sarah Botur, won the IRM Professional Development Award. Council chairman, Bill Shepherd, says he couldn’t be prouder of the trio. “It’s a real thrill for everyone involved to see Northlanders being recognised for their hard work by their peers at a national level.” Chairman Shepherd says the council had invested heavily to boost its regional Geographic Information System capacity in recent years and the awards in that area recognised both the current strength of Northland’s GIS capability and the field’s increasing

importance to the council in its dayto-day work. “We’ve invested quite strategically in GIS capability, both at a staffing and systems level in recent years, recognising this area’s growing importance to both council and the wider community.” Chairman Shepherd says like most regional councils; water quality is a primary focus for the NRC. “One important tool that assists in the management of our water is a water allocation tool; a GIS Model used to calculate the level of allocation and availability of ground and surface water in Northland.” Chairman Shepherd says it is not the first time the regional council’s work in the sector has earned it accolades — it is great to see the council continuing to build upon its past successes again this year. ¢

“This is hugely important because we have only one scallop bed left in the harbour. A lot of kai moana beds have been lost because of the mud and silt. “The Kaipara Harbour is the nursery to 97 per cent of snapper for the West Coast of the North Island. Our snapper are mutating. “Their gills are becoming thicker because of the sediment in the water column. “We are creating action to improve the water quality of the Kaipara Harbour, and of course, the best place to start is at the source.” Mr Wright says farmers can help by turning any suitable unproductive land into wetlands. “Wetlands are great filtration. They are like the kidneys of the Kaipara Harbour. Any further development of wetlands right around the Kaipara would be hugely beneficial to us.” The project is a collaboration

between Million Metres Streams Project, mana whenua, community organisations, non-governmental organisations and government agencies and is partially funded by the Ministry for the Environment’s Freshwater Improvement Fund. To recognise World Environment Day volunteers from Love Kaipara will sell locally made BYO bags from the Countdown foyer on June 8.

This netball season Kaipara netball fans and supporters are being encouraged to apply for assistance to reach their dreams.

Precautions for Northland farms u by Ayla Miller

Two farms in Northland have been put under a Notice of Direction as a precautionary measure while testing for Mycoplasma bovis.

For Ruawai college student, Harriet Spoelstra, flying high was all part of an eight-day School to Skies course held at RNZAF Base Ohakea. “This was a tech and aviation camp that provides girls in Year 13 with a chance to experience different careers in the forces. I met many new people and spent the week with 47 like-minded girls in year 13 from all over the country interested in science, aviation, tech and engineering,” said Harriet. “The air force is made up of 17% women and is wanting to be 25% by 2025. The week offered plenty of handson mechanical and electrical learning, which involved helping dismantle and repair an old training helicopter. We did a navigation exercise in which we ‘rescued an injured pilot from an enemy

base with the use of smoke grenades and camouflage paint’. A highlight for me was definitely flying in an NH90 helicopter — especially when the doors were open, and we flew over the beach, as well as flying the NH90 in the simulator.” The course also involved lectures throughout the week on various subjects including the basic principles of flight. “I had a great experience, and it showed me possibilities for my future that I hadn’t considered before. Don’t be afraid to follow a passion that those around you may not share. Do what you love and just give it a try even, or especially if you don’t yet know what your passion is.” More on the School to Skies program at rnzaf.schooltoskies.co.nz/info. ¢

An MPI spokesperson could not confirm if either of the farms were in the Kaipara region for privacy reasons but did say there were a number of trace properties in Northland. A forward trace is a cattle movement from a suspect farm to another farm. “We cannot confirm the locations of these farms within Northland. We adhere strictly to our privacy policy. It is up to farmers themselves to decide whether or not they want their name, farm or location in the public domain. “We’re working with the affected farmers to test their properties and clarify their status as soon as possible.” Mycoplasma bovis is a bacterial disease and causes untreatable mastitis in dairy and beef cows. It also can cause severe pneumonia

in infected calves, ear infections, abortions, swollen joints and lameness in all ages of cattle. The disease is commonly found in cattle all over the world and does not infect humans. It presents no food safety risk; however, it spreads from animal to animal through close contact. It spreads between farms through the movement of animals that are infected but may not be showing symptoms. A map on the MPI website shows all properties under legal controls and properties under surveillance. A government announcement on future plans to combat mycoplasma bovis was due from cabinet at 4pm on Monday, after this edition of Kaipara Lifestyler went to press.

Kaipara pink ribbon events

u by Jill Dickie

Groups around the Kaipara District have been holding Pink Ribbon events during May as part of a nationwide campaign to raise funds for breast cancer research in New Zealand. The Breast Cancer Foundation hopes to top last year’s total of over 3,600 breakfasts across New Zealand, which were attended by 90,000 people and raised $1.8 million. The campaign is in its 10th year. Celebrity cook and author, Nadia Lim, has fronted the campaign encouraging Kiwis to become involved. “Having taken part in Pink Ribbon Breakfasts last year, I know how much fun these gatherings can be, and also how worthwhile. It’s a fantastic chance to share vital information about breast health while raising much-needed money for a great cause,” she says.

Funds help support patients and research into breast cancer. “We have great researchers doing cutting-edge work in this country, but often there’s simply not enough money to take their work forward to clinical trials,” said chief executive at Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, Evangelia Henderson. Pink Ribbon Breakfast events are one way of donating, and more information is available at breastcancerfoundation. org.nz. Funding a lifesaver

Charlie’s ‘fundrazor’ u by Jill Dickie

Friends and supporters of local schoolgirl Charlotte Bassett are rallying together to raise funds for her family by having their hair shaved off in return for sponsorship.

p After deliberating many submissions from the public Northland Regional Council has announced details of its Long Term Plan, and the Mangawhai Surf Lifesaving Club should benefit from an increase in funding assistance. The increased funding to $200,000 from $120,000 for Surf Lifesaving Northern Region is to sustain the regional lifeguard service at six Northland beaches from Mangawhai to Ahipara. Chairman Bill Shepherd says the LTP had been developed in response to demand from the community and central government, as well as council’s desire to do more. In his opinion, it was ‘the boldest and most visionary Long Term Plan that council has ever proposed’. The plan will be presented at a council meeting on June 21 and take effect from July 1.

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora Starting at the beginning of my time as Mayor of Kaipara District four months ago I set out to communicate better what’s going on at Council. This short column is the latest part of sharing hot-off-the-press updates with the community. Good news from last week is the appointment by Council of a new Chief Executive. Louise Miller will be relocating her family to Kaipara from Tauranga, and is enthusiastic about being part of and working with communities like ours. To whet her appetite before joining the team in September, Louise will be spending a few days with existing Council staff in coming weeks. Acting Chief Executive Peter Tynan will be moving on in June, having led Council through a very busy time, plenty of transformative change and the preparation of the first Long Term Plan by an elected Kaipara District Council since 2012. All thanks to him for being great to work with and helping set a clear course towards the future. Council feels to me to be very much improved from the place I arrived at in February; still as busy as ever and running on a shoestring but now with a sense of renewed optimism. The fact 119 people applied for the Chief Executive role shows that Kaipara has great expectations. Speaking of great expectations, feedback on the idea of reviewing the District Plan was very clear during the recent Long Term Plan 2018-2028 consultation. You wished us to get on with the review and to allocate funding for this action. We have listened. I’m delighted to report we will undertake a comprehensive review commencing in the new financial year. This is an expensive but unavoidable exercise. We have added $6.9m funded over the ten years of the Long Term Plan. This has been achieved without any increase to rates by reprioritising other activities and expenditures. Considering growth

pressures and opportunities all across Kaipara District – it seems everyone I meet has a story of someone trying to subdivide or build or make way for more Kaipara businesses or residents – then this is a highlight for me from the Long Term Plan. Beyond business as usual the next few weeks will be outstanding for Kaipara District: we’ll see final careful audit checks by Deloitte, (who work under appointment of the Auditor-General) of the draft 250 page Long Term Plan 2018-2028, the appointment with Northland Regional Council of commissioners for resource consent hearings on the Arapohue chicken farm, signing of the new roading contract (2018-2021) for upkeep of our Kaipara roads and the commencement of preliminary discussions on a Treaty of Waitangi settlement for the Kaipara Harbour. Plenty of fresh activity here. I look forward to updating you on these developments and much more as we go along. Stand by for another short memo in a couple of weeks’ time. In the meantime, go safely and with care as the nights get longer and the season gets wetter.

p Some of the supporters who will all be having their hair shaved off on July 2 — Board of trustees member Oliver Lopez, teacher Carla Hill, pupil Aidan Glover, brother Ryan Powell, school principal Richard Truter and friend Maree Buckingham

St Joseph’s Primary School principal Richard Truter, teacher Carla Hill, and Charlotte’s brothers Ryan and Oliver will be joined by supporters at an event on July 2 at the school hall. Six-year-old ‘Charlie’, as she is known, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2016 and has since had numerous treatments, MRIs and three surgeries to remove seven tumours. A Give-ALittle page called ‘Charlies Challenge’

has been set up and has so far raised $8,723.00, and a new initiative through a Facebook page is expected to add to the funds. Through this page, supporters can donate by sponsoring other members of the public who are offering to shave their locks for the cause. Charlie is currently at Starship Hospital undergoing a six-week course of radiation treatment. ¢

Correction In the May 22 edition, a report on fundraising referred incorrectly to the ‘Riverside” rest home at Maungaturoto. In fact, the facility is the Riverview Rest Home and Village.

Production promises ‘visual treat’ u by Ayla Miller

Tickets are now on sale for the Dargaville Little Theatre’s latest production — an all original musical adaptation of The Mad Hatter.

p The cast of The Mad Hatter ‘madly’ rehearse as opening night approaches

The show is based on Alice in Wonderland from the Mad Hatter’s perspective as told by the Cheshire Cat and will be on stage for eight shows in June. Writer, director and composer, Julianne Parkinson, says the show will be a ‘visual treat.’ “This show has never been seen before. It’s original, and it has got lots of really great catchy tunes. “We have a very fresh but strong cast who have worked really hard. They will pull a whole new crowd which is why

people need to get in fast to buy their tickets, so they don’t miss out.” Julianne says this production has been a challenge for those working behind the scenes due to the elaborate costuming and set. “We are trying to use as much as we have from the costume room but we have some wild ideas. It’s coming together really well. The ensemble will be very colourful and creative.” The show will open on Friday, June 8 with a prize for the best dressed and a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party during the interval. ¢

From last week shoppers at Countdown Dargaville were required to take their own grocery bags or buy reusable ones for packing as the retail chain began implementing its plastic bag free programme.

A unique ultraviolet show that aims to bring the magic of Matariki to local children and their families will visit Dargaville in June.

p Customers and staff at the supermarket checkout area

Customers are now encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes or purchase either biodegradable plastic bags at 15 cents each or a fabric carry bag at $1. The fabric bags have a lifetime guarantee and can be returned for free replacement if damaged. In a 30-minute survey, conducted by one of the Lifestyler’s journalists

last week, of 52 customers, 29 had purchased bags, nine had their own recyclable bags, and 14 customers used no bag at all, with their goods in their arms or a trolley. Others used a plastic vegetable bag. A shopper who preferred to remain anonymous said the plastic bag free concept was easy to transfer to.  ¢

Changing roles hits nail on head u by Jill Dickie

Since starting at Carters Dargaville almost four years ago, manager Mark Kapa has increased the profile of the branch and is making changes to roles and working with staff to utilise their individual skills and encourage professional development. New account manager Stuart Gemmell, started with Carters about six months ago and may be familiar to local customers already. Stuart spends most of his time out of the office establishing new clients and maintaining relationships with builders, ensuring all their building needs are fulfilled. Having a natural rapport with people, he enjoys interaction with people, and likes “always being available for my clients.” He will give you the right advice and recommend suitable products for your project. Another new face, Colin Allen, was raised in Dargaville and been away for around 20 years. After returning, Colin was working with a local builder before being invited to join the Carters team two weeks ago. He is now a valued member of the inwards goods area and says he is enjoying dealing with people; the best part is catching up with familiar faces again. Current team member, Marni Burgen, has moved from inward goods where

p Team members Simon Parkinson, Stuart Gemmell, Marni Burgen, and Colin Allen

she gained product experience, into the inventory area where her valued skills will be advanced through keeping a watchful eye on stock levels. “I find it extremely interesting, and I look forward to the future of the role,” said Marni. Simon Parkinson is another familiar face to many customers and was employed four-and-a-half years ago by Carters. He managed the inwards goods area gaining his product knowledge and furthered his skills by changing roles to inventory coordinator. Simon is now

settled into a sales role where he is happiest, having developed a thorough product knowledge and established an effective skill for customer service. “I love the challenge of dealing with customers and enjoy solving their sometimes peculiar requests,” said Simon. The team at Carters are committed to ensuring customers receive the highest standard of expertise and excellent service and look forward to assisting with future projects. ¢

Magic Property Services

u by Jill Dickie

The traditional start of the new dairying season is approaching, and around the country, thousands of share milkers will pack their cows into stock trucks and move their equipment and families to new farms. Good planning leading up to the June 1 move and again afterwards, will help to minimise stress and disruption to families, so understanding a little about the new location and where to find what is needed will provide reassurance and make the transition easier. The Kaipara District provides ample choice of farming resources with several well-known companies having stores available for farmers. All manner of equipment can be purchased or ordered, from fencing requirements to feed supplies, farm clothing and wet weather gear, to fertiliser and animal health products. Most farmers will have a store they regularly visit and will find what they require no matter what part of the country they move to. Getting to know people in a new area can often be difficult but newcomers should find people in the Kaipara welcoming and friendly, and happy to help families settle. Whether it’s deciding which school or medical centre to attend, where the best shops are, or who to contact to get the kids enrolled in rugby, there are a plethora of ways to find out; one of the most popular methods is through the use of social media. There are several useful Facebook groups of supportive people available by tapping a few keys on a keyboard. Gypsy Week Expanded area of expertise u by Andy Bryenton

Pay attention!

When people talk about Area 51 in the west Kaipara, they aren’t discussing alien conspiracy theories. The high technology deployed by the technical staff at our local Area 51 is nothing to do with UFO’s, and everything to do with four-wheel drives. Now a new expansion to the business delivers even more, for vehicles on and off the tarmac. Area 51 boss, Sam Talijancich, has already made a move from his original out-of-town workshop to new premises, and now he’s jumped up another gear, taking on a brand-new building and forming a team to offer servicing, repairs, parts and safety checks for cars, vans and utes. Two new hoists and a whole lot of automotive tools have been brought in to turn what was once a plumber’s workshop into an automotive hive of activity. This is good news for a town like Dargaville with a growing population, which has put a strain on the ability of many tradespeople to accommodate an influx of work. A new, skilled team of technicians and mechanics in town is just what the automotive doctor ordered, and what’s best is the fact that this same crew are also masters of auto electrical work. Combine that with a thorough knowledge of suspension, driveline, exhausts and engines, and you have a one-stop shop for servicing and upgrades. Sam says there’s no job too

AUTO

Geared up for the farm u by Andy Bryenton

The side-by-side all-purpose vehicle has filled the gap between the quad bike and the full-sized ute on Kiwi farms so well that it’s hard to imagine a world without it. Now, as a whole new farming year kicks off with Gypsy day on June 1, there’s plenty of rural folks in the market for something which is even more finely-tuned to fit that niche. Original side-by-sides came down to farming from the world of hunting, but were easily and quickly adapted to their new role. The easiest way to do this was to talk to the people using them, who universally demanded more off-thebeaten-track abilities, such as improved ride height, steeper attack angles for fording streams and tackling rugged ground and carrying capacity to take all the tools necessary for farm jobs along with you. This has been the genesis of the CFMoto U800 EPS Farm Spec — a combination of the best parts brought together to create something more than the sum of them. Like the Ford Cobra or GT40, it’s an international collaboration — though there’s probably room for some McLaren in that mix as well because this side-by-side is focussed heavily on New Zealand. This explains the weatherproof nature of the beast, with its tough, shatterproof windscreen, hefty, roofed roof cage to meet ROPS standards and tons of grip for in the mud, thanks to independent A-arm suspension and serious fourwheel-drive capabilities, including a

front diff-lock. Power still comes from CFMoto’s tried and true 800cc V-twin but is delivered to potentially all four wheels via a Canadian sourced ‘bulletproof’ CVT transmission system, getting the maximum amount of power to the ground in any situation. That’s a good thing, because our farming terrain may be picturesque, but

it’s in many ways tougher than Aussie’s dry and dusty outback. A front-mounted winch and plenty of ground clearance help the CFMoto U800 EPS Farm Spec get out of tight spots, while the whole package has been designed to be easy to maintain, easy to water blast clean, and simple to operate. AUTO ADVERTORIAL

Starting up the classics by Geraldine Craw of the Packard and Pioneer Museum

Have you ever wondered if our old vehicles run? To answer this question, we have put together a special ‘start-up’ Tour with museum director Fenton Craw, on Saturday, June 2 at 10.30am.

Fenton will start at least one vehicle in each shed and maybe — for the fun of it — a few more. The aim of the museum is to look at the changes in technology over the 20th century, so starting some of these vehicles is an art form — very different from 2018’s touchbutton technology! Beginning in our Old Packard Room, the first car to start is the 1919 V12 Opera Coupe. First, prime the motor before starting, pour a small amount of paraffin oil into the cup above the cylinder, then turn the tap allowing the paraffin oil to flow into the combustion chamber ready for ignition. This car has a floor electric start, push the button on the floor with your foot and hear it roar! That’s a little different to the 1922 Model T Ford. You must be fit as this car must be cranked. Before cranking, set the throttle, set the advance-retard gauge, set the choke and turn the key on. Make sure the car is out of gear — or when it starts it will run you over. Fortunately, technology quickly moved on from hand-cranking vehicles. The next car to be started is the 1931 Packard Club Sedan in our Steam Room. This car, nicknamed Daphne,

Start-Up Tour No.2 June 2nd 2018 10.30am

also has an electric floor start but she may need a little ether persuasion. Listen to the distinctive tone of the 6-volt motor as it turns over. Another interesting machine is the Calfdozer. Used by NZ Railways in the 1940s and 50s, this machine has a single cylinder Ruston air-cooled diesel — and yes, it needs to be cranked! For a rest we’ll move upstairs to the motorcycle collection; and what a choice! Sixty-five classics! We’ll leave Fenton to start something, probably the Ariel Square Four, a model beloved of famous racer Burt Munro. Then on to the Mostly English Shed,

and how about starting the Willys Jeep or the NZ built Trekka? In the Big Back Shed, there are a number of machines that run. The Allis Chalmers HD4 bulldozer, the GMC Army Truck or maybe the 1947 International KB3 Truck — the choices are endless. If you haven’t had enough of the scent of petrol, diesel and history by our last shed, Fenton will start the 1953 Packard Clipper or the 1958 Packard Town Sedan. Come along, ask some questions and enjoy our old vehicles — it’s a great day out for the whole family!

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. *Results may vary
