A panel of judges, including mayor Jason Smith, 100% McKay’s Electrical manager Craig Woollam and Feed & Flour caterer and baker Kiri Taylor tucked into samples crafted by four finalists, each of whom had won one of the previous rounds for their efforts baking muffins, slices, cookies and scones. Surrounding the baking action was a festival of Dargaville clubs, groups and societies, all chatting with the crowds about things to get involved with this winter. A variety of activities were represented, from exploring history with the genealogists to learning performance skills with Circus Kumarani. The Scouts were outdoors cooking up campfire damper bread, while a bouncy castle was there to entertain the youngsters, who could also try their hand at gingerbread person art or enter the colouring contest. The gents from Smoken Daggers kept everyone fed as the ongoing cake decorating challenge set mouths watering indoors. In the end, it came down to the four amazing cakes that were crafted on-site by the four contestants. As the clock ticked down the final minutes, more than one spectator opined that it would be tough to choose between these four confections. Hosts Drew and Helen from Good Life concurred, leaving the tasting and aesthetic judging to Craig, Kiri and Jason. From a depiction of Dargaville’s resident taniwha with colourful lollies for scales and dried kumara peel spikes, through to artfully crafted marzipan mushrooms and honeycomb ‘resin’

However, the final judgment went to Todd’s entirely edible rendition of Tane Mahuta, a kauri tree with sugar foliage, a cake trunk and branches, and edible wildlife clustered around its base on backdrops representing the forest and the coast. To end the day in a generous fashion, every one of the finalists gave their cakes up for auction, joining a pool
of gifts donated by local businesses. These were all snapped up by the crowd in a rapid-fire auction, with all the proceeds going to the fight against cystic fibrosis. These coffers were topped up by the gold coin donations for the bouncy castle and other charitable additions to raise thousands of dollars for the cause. The organisers and participants would like to offer sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of the businesses and individuals who made this event possible and giving generously to help make the day a success. ¢ see more on page 17 …

p Piroa Falls, near Maungaturoto, is a popular spot with visitors and a featured site of natural beauty in the famous Lonely Planet tourist guide. There’s a long association between this natural gem and the local Rotarians, who have helped make it a great place to picnic and relax during the years. In 2020 it was noticed that a walkway to the falls had been undermined, and the Rotary Club decided to help replace this amenity. Club members Tim Magill, Keith Shadbolt and Stella Clyde liaised with DOC and planned the replacement and, with the help of volunteers, built a new walkway last Saturday. Eileen Parsons provided the welcome refreshments to the hard-working volunteers.

p A nationwide road crusade to stop melanoma came to Dargaville last Thursday, offering free checkups for patients to catch the deadly illness in its early stages and stop it. Staffed by Melanoma New Zealand and supported by Ryman Health Care, the ‘spot check’ van was well patronised. Local volunteer Abbie Murphy teamed up with Melanoma NZ’s Gill Rolfe to attend to a steady queue of Dargaville locals looking to get checked out. “We’re going out into the community to help make a difference, and the community supports us,” says Gill, noting that every stop along the way has seen volunteers step up to help run the small mobile clinic, run from a van purchased by Ryman for this purpose.

p Last Sunday was National Alpaca Day, a parallel to a festival celebrating the woolly creatures, which has been held in Peru and Chile for generations. Here in New Zealand, it meant open farms and delighted guests. Our own local Alpaca Day celebration was the brainchild of Kiwi alpaca breeders, seeking to introduce new farmers and lifestyle block owners to these friendly and intelligent beasts; more closely related to camels than to other quadrupeds but hailing from the high mountains of South America. The co-owner of one farm open to the public on the day, Donna Tannion, says that there are some similarities with the llama, but that alpacas are more gracile and personable.

Mangawhai plan change approved
Vaccine roll-out for Kaipara
u by Paul Campbell
A Private Plan Change affecting Mangawhai Estuary Estates involving an increase in housing density has been accepted by the Kaipara District Council on the recommendation of a hearings panel. The plan included multiple changes to the Kaipara District Plan, Chapter 16, which covers Estuary Estates in Mangawhai, including modifications to some provisions that were requested by Mangawhai Central Limited. The council received 208 submissions, the majority opposing the change seeking that it be declined or substantially altered. The panel included independent commissioners Greg Hill, David Hill, and KDC Deputy Mayor Anna Curnow. “I know many will be disappointed that we are recommending that Plan Change 78 is approved,” Ms Curnow said. “The Resource Management Act and associated statutory instruments direct us to examine a particular range of matters, and the report outlines our findings on those.” Mayor Dr Jason Smith said the decision before the council was not to relitigate the recommendations. “For the development to p KDC Deputy Mayor and commissioner Anna Curnow proceed, there are still a number of issues to be addressed that are all due processes are followed, and as separate from the plan change itself. Southern pride on show u by Andy Bryenton
Southern Rugby Club is celebrating its 137th birthday, with a sponsor’s day that seeks to honour not just the players but the backbone of any rugby club in provincial New Zealand; the families, administrators and supporters. The big day is an open day for the go-ahead little club situated in Te Kopuru, where club captain Chris Fife invites the wider community to attend a fun day and a big match on Saturday, May 8. Fife has recently been elected as Northland Rugby Union Council of Unions Deputy Chairman, a role which he says will give local sports a bigger voice around the top table. “You don’t get more grassroots than Te Kopuru and Southern,” he says of his local club, where he’s p Tane the Taniwha in Southern colours at the last Southern Rugby sponsors day. While the big green mascot is in served for four decades. action elsewhere this year, the club promises an ‘epic’ “The big thing for us clash on the field this year is celebrating our predecessors. We’re here Rugby and the 130th birthday of the today, doing the job, to honour them and game in Northern Wairoa. Come along to make sure this opportunity is there to celebrate not just this sporting for our kids.” The action kicks off from tradition, but also a club that has 2.30pm on Saturday, with old-fashioned provided facilities for many other local Kiwi rugby club hospitality and a match Te Kopuru events and milestones between old rivals Otamatea and through the years. ¢
Council numbers, wards reviewed u by Andy Bryenton
The Kaipara District Council is looking at how citizens are represented around the council table, with a survey open to the public discussing ward boundaries, number of councillors and fair, proportionate coverage. The KDC advised it will be reviewing representation arrangements later this year, prompting a call for feedback before formulating any specific proposals. “We’re keen to hear if you think we provide fair and effective representation for you and your community,” says Engagement and Transformation general manager Jason Marris. “Our district is currently represented by the mayor and eight councillors who are elected from four wards.” It is an opportunity to ask for change and may see citizens opt p Mayor Jason Smith and his councillors are getting ‘back to the roots’ of deomcratic representation for more councillors for wards with a new initiative to assess ward boundaries and growing in population. It’s also their relevance to population numbers the first review of its kind that will take into account the adoption of taking a conservative and consultative Maori wards for the Kaipara. Some approach. “The representation review opine that the growing population in is an opportunity for you to identify the east may see a third councillor the district’s ‘communities of interest’, elected for Mangawhai, while this consider how best to represent these could remove one from one of the communities and ensure all parts of other wards or create a new seat the district are fairly represented,” says at the table. However, the KDC is Mr Marris. ¢

Gathering for Anzac services u by Andy Bryenton
Local residents turned out in large numbers to commemorate Anzac Day last Sunday week. For the first time in two years, a full dawn service and parade could be held at the town’s war memorial. civilian population. Deputy Mayor Anna Curnow made a well-received address to those assembled. Commemorations at Matakohe and in Maungaturoto were also very well attended. Numerous school students gathered at the Kauri Museum for Anzac formalities, including wreath-laying and playing the last post; in this instance rendered on guitar by local musician Aaron Philips. In Maungaturoto, a
president David Fagan invited citizens back to the clubrooms in Hokianga Road for breakfast. Many members of the entourage who had attended Dargaville’s parade set out for Ruawai, where a similar remembrance event was held at 10.30am. Ruawai’s RSA contingent has been reduced to only two veterans by the attrition of time. The effort was made to bolster numbers at an event much-appreciated by Ruawai’s

The latest in a series of maps showing areas at risk of coastal erosion and coastal flooding, including the entire Kaipara Harbour, have been released by the Northland Regional Council.
p Kaipara Harbour from Waihaua Marae, Arapaoa
For coastal erosion, mapping is available for 41 sites, while for coastal flooding, mapping has been extended along the entire regional coastline. “These maps will help inform decision-making to manage the risks of coastal hazards for our communities, now and into the future,” said chair of the NRC’s Climate Change Working Party, Amy Macdonald. For coastal flooding, there are 7,500 newly-included parcels of land, bringing the total in mapped areas to about 20,000. “For coastal erosion, we now have about 2,500 land parcels mapped Northland-wide, of which roughly 500 are newly included.”

The council has written to affected landowners about the revised maps, which will be finalised mid-July following a three-month feedback period. “We’ve written to everyone whose property, or part of it is in a mapped area to explain more about the mapping and what it might mean for them.” Based on new aerial survey data and updated 50 and 100-year projections, the maps will be used to inform decision-making. Councillor Macdonald says councils nationally are grappling with how best to support and prepare their communities as climate change effects increase over time. That includes coastal hazards, flood, drought and permanent inundation from sea-level rise. The updated mapping is available at nrc.govt.nz/coastalmaps. ¢

Medals returned for Anzac Day u by Andy Bryenton
A local veteran whose service medals were stolen from out of his own home has been reunited with his military regalia in time for Anzac Day. When Dargaville man Chappie Bristow was called to serve in Vietnam, he reported for three months of intensive training. “It was in the air,” he says, talking of the palpable sense that deployment was imminent. “We could all feel it. The war seemed just over the hill.” Called up in a ‘lottery’ of conscription, the telecommunications worker was compelled to drop out of employment to answer the army’s call. Previously, in the 1950s, he had been one of many Kiwi youths to complete compulsory military training. “It was very intensive but very good at the same time,” he says, recalling army life. “They taught us life skills, not just skills for war, and they taught us not to swear, that’s for certain.” That time at the Papakura Military Camp among his peers was repeated when the conflict in Vietnam engulfed the United States and her allies, including New Zealand. It was only a combination of luck, international politics and the fortunes of conflict which saw him avoid shipping out for south-east Asia. As a serviceman during

the war, he was awarded a medal, even though he was not forced to fire a shot in anger. That was the medal later stolen from his home by burglars. Chappie thought that he might never have it replaced. The Dargaville RSA petitioned Veteran’s Affairs, and another copy was struck, and presented to him this month in Dargaville. ¢

Tern of the tide
Sticky end for pests
u by Andy Bryenton
u by Paul Campbell
There’s new hope for the endangered, rare fairy tern, as ornithologists at Auckland Zoo have managed to hatch and raise one of the birds in captivity.
Tiny wasps have been released by the Northland Regional Council as a biocontrol agent to help control the giant willow aphid, first sighted and reported in Auckland in late 2013 and which spread quickly throughout the North Island.
p The endangered fairy tern received a big boost this year, as a chick successfully raised in captivity was released into the wild
With a range that spans the east Kaipara at Mangawhai and Te Arai to the west of the harbour at Papakanui, this tiny seabird is one of the rarest in the world. A good breeding season is good news for a population that’s only in double digits. Being able to safely rear a chick in a controlled environment puts the tern on a stronger footing. Auckland Zoo staff have used the same skills they deployed to hatch the fairy tern as they have done for other native birds. They have built up quite a skills base helping save Kiwi, for example. “When a population is so tiny, so overwhelmed by a host of threats, and so precariously perched on the brink of extinction, we need every tool in the conservation toolbox,” says Auckland Zoo’s Head of Animal Care
& Conservation, Richard Gibson. “The opportunity this breeding season is an essential first step towards a future programme of intensive population augmentation to help reverse the fortunes of this plucky little bird.” The chick was transferred to a purposebuilt aviary near the wild population to get used to the environment where it would forage and live. After a month of on-site care by DOC specialists, the little tern could fly and hunt for itself. Along with the chick hatched at the zoo, four fairy terns fledged in the wild this breeding season. That means that we know of only about 40 adult birds in existence. A dedicated team of seven DOC rangers and a group of community volunteers have worked since September, trapping for predators near tern nesting sites. ¢
Willows are the aphids’ only recognised host plant, and although just five to six millimetres long, they’re a problem. The aphids form dense clusters, which tap into the sugar flow in a willow’s stem. The pressure of sap through the aphid produces honeydew, a sticky nuisance for farmers and orchardists, and also attracts large numbers of German and other wasps. The willow trees themselves also suffer from the aphid infestation, experiencing branch dieback and occasionally death. Councillor Jack Craw, who chairs the council’s Biosecurity and Biodiversity Working Party, p Regional council nursery coordinator Matthew says the wasp lays eggs in Mabbitt prepares to release parasitic wasps into the aphids, which hatch and willow trees at the council‘s Flyger Road nursery consume their host, before emerging as an adult, leaving their Industries Sustainable Food and now mummified nursery behind. Kaipara challenged to ride
OPINION
Mental health is real u by Jane Gray
I’m not a counsellor or anything like one, but I believe there is not a person on the planet that hasn’t had some sort of mental health issue at some stage in their life. hardly your loved one’s fault that they have died. Then those emotions start all over again. Grief is a roller coaster that can be very hard to get off. Anxiety is another one that can come from nowhere and go just as quickly but can also linger. As much as your brain tries to tell you not to be silly, you just can’t get it under control. It’s irrational and often consuming, and you think you are weak asking for help; guess what, you’re not! Asking for help is true strength. Most, if not all, mental health issues can be treated. That treatment starts with talking to someone, asking for help and keeping on asking if you’re not getting the help that is making a difference. The hardest step is recognising you may have a problem, then asking for help and taking the help that is offered. There are so many websites out there that can help you take the first step to better mental health; you just need to have a look. Alternatively, talk to your doctor. We live in such a fast-paced world now, with no time to stop and take a breath. Somehow, we all need to find time to take a breath and look after ourselves. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, especially for good mental health. ¢
During the past decade, the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride has raised US$27 million towards men’s health initiatives worldwide, both physiological and psychological. This year, in New Zealand, the ride takes place on May 23. Established in Sydney, Australia, back in 2011, the ride is a chance for men to gather with their friends and take a ride in the countryside for a good cause. International founder of the idea, Mark Hawwa, was inspired by a picture of actor John Hamm (from the series Mad Men) wearing a sharply cut suit and riding a vintage motorcycle. Knowing that his motorbiking friends were keen on helping with men’s mental health and prostate cancer charities, he organised a ride in dapper attire as an ironic p Classic bikes and ‘Sunday best’ attire come together in a nod to the charity poker quirky way to promote better mental and physical health runs often conducted by for men this May other biking groups in leather and jeans. classic bikes can hit the road at once. That might last a month or a lifetime. It is a very real thing in our society, and it’s not new. The only difference is that now, we no longer shut people up with mental health issues unless they are likely to hurt themselves or others. We also no longer pretend there is nothing wrong. Mental health is behind most addictions, phobias, bad behaviours or extreme ups and blackest downs, and not all mental health issues are obvious to others. Mental health issues can hit you any time, no matter what age you are. More often than not, in the beginning, you won’t even be aware that things are changing. Take grief, for instance; it’s understandable, and you accept the fact you are going to be sad as someone that you love has gone. However, what you may not realise is that grief spans the whole gamut of emotions. There’s sadness as they have gone, loneliness because there’s an empty chair in the house or they are not at the other end of the phone, anger because they have left you, relief they are no longer suffering, fear about how you can manage without them. Then comes the kicker; guilt because you have felt all of these other emotions, and it’s

Heritage buildings get makeover u by Paul Campbell
Two pioneer heritage listed buildings within the precinct of The Kauri Museum at Matakohe are being given a new lease of life to protect them into the future, with the help of a Lotto grant topped up from museum funds. “The museum’s pioneer school and old post office buildings are being reroofed and repainted with work overseen by Heritage New Zealand,” said general manager, Dr Tracey Wedge. “Early education began in Matakohe in 1878, and the school was Matakohe’s first school building complete with desks, pens, books, maps and more. We expect the work to be just about finished for a school group booked in for a pioneer classroom experience.” From 1909 to 1988 the Matakohe Post Office acted as a centre for the local community. The building was built from kauri milled locally, and services included postal, banking, telephone, marriage licences and official government applications. The display features original equipment, old telephones and the manual telephone exchange. “We applied for funding from Lottery Environment and Heritage grants, and we were successful, and we are topping

up those funds. All the roofing and painting work is being carried out by local firms. It’s very important that we keep our local community going.” The grants are available for projects that will help protect, conserve or
care for our natural, cultural and physical heritage. “For us at the museum, it means protecting these heritage listed buildings for the longterm future.” ¢

Back in 2005, when the well-known Dargaville business B’arch Wear opened in McKay’s Arcade, some said that the town was too small and old fashioned for a store with the kind of edge and sense of humour owner Jonette Bartlett had planned. for health and mental wellbeing, B’arch Wear has stocked them all. “One large trend which surprised us all with its community impact was the introduction of vaping, and how many people were keen to stop smoking cigarettes.” Alongside serious issues like this where the B’arch Wear team has been pleased to offer advice and help, there have also been plenty of customers looking for a gift that’s a bit different. Some once again opined that Dargaville was too ‘old-fashioned’ for a shop that delivered a bit of harmless adult humour for the grown-ups, but 16 years of success have proved them wrong. It’s amazing to think of all the big milestones of life that have been celebrated with a gift, a novelty beer tankard, an engraved key or something special from B’arch Wear during the years. Taking a look at the sheer variety of things on display here is part of the fun of shopping local; you never know what you might find. Now it’s the store’s own ‘sweet 16’, and that’s a great excuse to take

Fast forward to 2021, and that sense of irreverence and style has outlived a global financial crisis, a pandemic and most of the naysayers, too. A vibrant part of our retail landscape, B’arch Wear lives up to its title as the Funk Store, attracting a clientele of all ages and, says Jonette, real local loyalty. “As we turn ‘sweet 16’ I’d like to take the chance to offer thanks to the loyal customers who have made this possible,” she says. “I come from an entrepreneurial family in Pouto. I started my business when I was 25, my late father was my mentor and he inspired me to be the best I can be. “B’arch Wear was founded by myself, to help motivate and inspire others. My goal was to create a business to empower young women; no matter what challenges you face in life you can get through them with confidence.” A big believer in the ‘shop local’ cause, Jonette is certain that her store has helped make a positive impact, adding colour and contrast to the main street’s offerings. United for cystic fibrosis appeal
17
Dargaville’s inaugural bake-off competition was not just a celebration of kitchen creativity; it was also a fundraiser for the fight against cystic fibrosis and a chance for local groups and clubs to invite new members to join. As crowds gathered for a day of fun, groups and societies put on their best presentations and funds were raised by auction for the cause. When the final tally was in, more than $5,000 was gathered to assist those living with CF. A significant donation from both the local business community, raffle and auction participants and, of course, the champion bakers too, who all donated their cakes at the end of the day. ¢

Chainsaws are excellent tools when it comes time to stow away a load of neatly trimmed firewood or prevent winter disasters with some judicious pruning and felling. However, they’re also tools that require the utmost respect. A hardened steel chain driven by a powerful engine slices wood effortlessly, so it’s understandably dangerous to the unprotected operator as well. That’s why Stihl comes out with a strong message each May, as Kiwis start hoarding and prepping firewood in earnest; chainsaw safety is of vital importance. Safety breaks down into three broad areas; saw maintenance, protective gear and operator skill. When it comes to saw maintenance, it’s all about having a tool fit for purpose. That means taking a long, hard appraisal of your chainsaw when it’s taken out of the shed this time of year. Is it rusty, hard to start or smoky? Are there parts missing or damaged? Is the chain sharp, tensioned correctly and straight? If there are negative marks against any of these points, it’s time to consult a professional and give your saw a well-needed birthday. That is all the more important if you were not the last one to use the machine. Once you have a tensioned
sharpened, oiled and safe chainsaw, the next stage is to armour yourself against the hazards you might encounter while cutting wood. As most of these cuts are with a downward motion, chaps are an important piece of kit; modern versions are filled with strands that clog the chain should it come into contact, stopping the saw before those teeth meet your skin. Flying wood chips means eye protection is mandatory, and the loud sound of both the engine and the sawing action call for ear protection too. Gloves and boots finish the suite of protective p Stihl is once again running its Chainsaw Safety Awareness garments; a helmet is advised Week in May, with a call to the public to gear up, be cautious and avoid injury if you’re working in a felling or pruning area. Finally, it’s worth taking some time advice on the right tool for the job and to learn safe cutting techniques. how best to use it safely. Don’t forget Familiarise yourself with your saw, and that a truly old and beat-up chainsaw don’t keep cutting if you begin to feel might be cheaper to replace than repair fatigued or too tired to control the blade. and that for smaller tasks, electric If you’re new to using a saw, your local power now supersedes petrol for ease mower and chainsaw shop can offer of use. ¢

New locale for bike pros u by Andy Bryenton
Patrick Lumby has been repairing motorbikes and quads for the past six years in a professional capacity. His rural workshop, up in the hills behind Dargaville’s aero club, has seen all sorts in that time. However, all good things eventually change. When you are an accomplished motorbike mechanic, parts sourcing adept and fixer of knotty engine problems, they tend to change for the bigger and better. Patrick has found this out as his business has grown, encompassing more than just the rural fleet that were his initial customers. Now it’s not uncommon to find a mix of motocross, adventure, road, farm and trail two-wheelers in his care, with quads of all models and sizes beside. This abundance of work comes from an abundance of customers happy with his efforts in keeping them moving, says Patrick. It is also the spur that saw him look for new premises, branching up and out, away from his rural roots. “The new workshop, on the corner of Beach Road in Dargaville, it is 10 times bigger than the current one. It’s given me the opportunity to get more streamlined and organised, with space for more tools, more parts and more room to work on those tight spaces up, under and around engines,” he says. “There’s room to make some future plans, too, with the first being the inclusion of a large hoist for side-by-side

vehicles. I’ll also have room for a retail shop, serving parts, tyres, equipment and eventually riding gear.” All Bikes’ signage is primed to go up soon on what was once the grains and stock feed building. It’s a running joke that while the old owners provided power for horses, Patrick is there to provide actual horsepower. He’s in good company, too; respected engineers and vintage vehicle appreciators Grant Engineering is just next door, while it’s
a short trip across the road to access motorcycle WOF accreditation from Car Mech Services. Patrick just moved in on Monday, but he’s brought many of his customers and some of his workload with him in this busy time of the year. Increased visibility and a central spot for drop-ins, drop-offs and pick-ups make this new All Bikes location a winner for convenience; look out for the big red and black logo opposite Providence. ¢
