The organiser of ‘Days of Thunder’, Sheryl Botica, said more than 300 adults came on the first day and 250 on Sunday, a turnout she was pleased with. “It went very well. It’s the first time we’ve put on an event like this. They do it all for free. They’re absolutely fabulous.” Bettie Marchant, from Hakaru RSA’s women’s section, achieved the honour of starting off one battle with a rifle

shot, while members of the cadet union were also invited to take part in the re-enactments. Mrs Botica says Hakaru RSA plans to organise another event next year to mark the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli, which “will be even bigger and better than this year’s. She says further events are likely to follow at three-year intervals, as the amount of organisation required makes it too difficult to hold them annually. 

Head teacher Teresa Robertson says the parents spent six hours over Anzac weekend building the edging under the supervision of builder Cole Ringrose.  Otamatea High School’s Level 2 Physical Education class had the opportunity to snorkel in the pristine waters around Goat Island recently — but it wasn’t all fun and games. The adventure was part of an internal assessment and students were required to write a report about the risks involved in snorkelling and how they can be prevented by using risk management strategies. The day of the trip provided ideal conditions for snorkelling and the class saw an eagle ray, a family of crayfish and various fish species, including snapper and blue maomao.

Kaiwaka firefighters Liquor application opposed face Sky Tower challenge  by Colin Patterson

It sounds like madness, but 700 firefighters will soon race up the 1,103 steps of Auckland’s Sky Tower in full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus.

An application for a licence to operate a retail liquor outlet in Paparoa has attracted strong opposition in the town and surrounding district, with a petition against the application attracting over 500 signatures at the time of writing.

Three of this year’s intrepid participants in the Sky Tower challenge to be held on May 17 are members of the Kaiwaka Volunteer Brigade. Tim Brown, Mickey Renton and Mike Law will bust their guts on May 17 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. The 2013 event raised $700,000 and organisers are hoping for more than $1 million this time. Mr Law says the Kaiwaka trio took part last year, so know what to expect. “It was pretty exhausting.” They decided to enter after Mr Law’s three-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer. He and his colleagues have not undertaken any special training. Mr Law, a retired forestry worker says he keeps pretty fit, as does Mr Brown who works in IT. “Mickey’s a roofer, so he’s up and down ladders all day.” The threesome say they have been too busy to do much about sponsorship. But they took part in Shave for a Cure. “We cut people’s hair in full firefighting kit. Then we took it off and had ours cut. We managed to raise $6,000 for child cancer.” Each of the three finished last year’s climb in around 23 minutes and Mr Law

is confident they can do as well this year. But he hopes for a quieter preparation than in 2013. “Last year the alarm went off the evening before. We spent several hours fighting a fire.” To support the Kaiwaka firefighters, go to firefightersclimb.org.nz/Donations. 

Strengthening Families began operating in the Kaipara in 2007 and in that time, coordinator Bethne Smith has helped hundreds of families to reach their potential.

Otamatea Community Services has welcomed new family support worker Lianne Wilson to their team.

Bethne works with families who are already connected to other agencies and says her role is to get everybody on the same page. “I’m the in-between person. I find out what the agencies need, what the family needs and I coordinate that process. When a vacancy occurred fairly soon after her visit, Lianne was back to ask more questions.” It was a clear match and since beginning with OCS in March, Lianne has completed Child Protection training, a rigorous 10 day budgeting programme and she has recently completed a three month part-time literacy and numeracy course. Lianne hopes that she can journey with the client families until they reach their potential, thus turning setbacks into comebacks. 

Otamatea Netball Club has received a much needed boost after losing eight teams’ worth of equipment to a fire four months ago. The club applied to ANZ Courtside for a custom grant and were successful, receiving a set of uniforms, netballs and pump and a gear bag. The club was also delighted to receive two unexpected donations from Barfoot and Thompson and Maungaturoto Opportunity Shop. “My daughter, Stevie-Raye, was chosen to be a ball carrier for the Mystics at their game against the Tactics in Auckland for her sixth birthday and Mystics sponsor Barfoot and Thompson called our family on to the court and presented us with a $2,000 cheque for the club,” said president of Otamatea Netball Club, Tina Ball, whose house was destroyed in the fire. “It was totally unexpected and pretty awesome! “However, even with the grant and the donations we’ve received, we’re still a few thousand dollars short to get uniforms for all our teams. At the moment, we have borrowed some skirts and the players are playing in their own tops but we are going to run into an issue when the juniors start on May 10.”

Water restrictions lifted Recent heavy rains have led to the Kaipara District Council lifting water restrictions that were applied in the Dargaville and Baylys Beach areas. The restrictions were implemented in February and were designed to safeguard supplies through the second dry summer in a row. The restrictions prohibited the use of hoses and sprinklers to water gardens and wash cars. Council spokeswoman Barbara Ware says the restrictions were removed effective from midnight on Friday May 2. The ban on outdoor fires that has been in place since mid-summer was lifted two weeks ago. 

Carvings mark community gardens

Kaipara District commissioners heard public submissions on the council’s draft Annual Plan for 2014/15 last week as public hearings took place in Maungaturoto, Dargaville and Mangawhai.

Among the submitters, Pene McKenzie from the Dargaville Museum urged commissioners to reconsider the classification of the Lighthouse Function Centre as a commercial facility. Its current classification meant it was unable to apply for funding for essential maintenance, such as replacing the lino in the kitchen. Kelvin Windsor representing Ratepayers of Te Kopuru urged commissioners to cancel a planned 6% rates hike in the town to fund urgent maintenance on its sewerage scheme. He said the rates rise would create a huge burden on the town’s low-income families, while residents had already paid for their sewerage scheme through

a targeted rate since it was built in 1980. Local resident Graham Jones said the Kauri Coast Community Pool was a white elephant costing the council $250,000 a year, even though its original business case said it would operate at no cost to ratepayers. He also criticised the council for resealing Hokianga Rd three times in two years, and for building a water storage dam for Dargaville but then being unwilling to spend $2 million on a pipeline to pipe the water to the town. The three commissioners meet again on May 27. The Annual Plan is then scheduled to be formally adopted before the start of the next financial year on July 1. 

When appointed to govern the Kaipara District Council in September 2012, the Commissioners were provided with a set of tasks, laid out in a Gazette Notice issued by the Minister of Local Government. Every three months the Commissioners report to the Minister on their progress towards meeting the tasks. The last task set for the Commissioners is set down for the period July to October 2015. It is described as follows. The Commissioners will develop an exit plan to facilitate a smooth transition back to an elected Council. This may include: • Recommendations for any Government assistance required (eg special legislation) • Recommendations to use the Ministerial intervention and assistance provisions proposed as part of the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill 2012 to assist the newly elected Council if appropriate; and • A plan for the induction of the new mayor and councillors to be elected in 2015. An elected Council is destined to replace the Commissioners in October 2015. Many of the tasks required to be accomplished by the Commissioners have been accomplished, some remain work in progress, and some like the last task described above have yet to be undertaken. Commissioners will put in place a plan for the induction of elected members. As members of the Kaipara community however, we should also be putting our minds towards the elections. Kaipara needs candidates who will stand for election, and who will bring the skills, community interest, and passion to Council that will form a great governance team for our district. As Commissioners, our promise to successfully elected candidates is to leave you with a Council that is in good shape – one that is financially sustainable, that is engaged with the many communities that make up Kaipara, and that is organisationally competent. We will leave you with a reliable Long Term Plan, with asset management plans that

are robust, and with a series of community action plans that have been embraced by residents. If you are interested in finding out about how Council works, or if you wish to discuss the demands of being an elected member, you might: • Ask a previously elected member for advice. • Attend a Council meeting or two. • Ask to meet with a Commissioner. The Kaipara District Council is a complex organisation, carrying out many activities – running libraries, managing networks like roads, providing parks and supporting community activities. For elected members this makes being part of the governance team interesting and challenging. The Kaipara District Council is also an important public organisation for our District. It provides services that we cannot provide alone. It keeps our roads open, our wastewater systems operating, and it is there if there is a civil defence emergency. As an elected member, you are there to guide the operation of Council – to set policies and ensure that they are abided by; to develop plans and approve contracts, and monitor their application; to work with members of the community and community groups, supporting their initiatives. The Council’s Chief Executive will report to your Council, and with the support of Council staff, will manage its operations. Kaipara is a district made up of many communities. As an elected member you will represent the whole district, and you will be amazed and impressed by the level of engagement for the public good that exists. Think about this. When the Commissioners end their time as the Council’s governors, Kaipara needs to replace them with a Mayor and Council that can take our District forward. Newman Engineering co-owner Margaret Bishop says the changeover of the flags was delayed because the material used in the replacement flags had stretched and needed to be repaired before being reused.

There is an old saying that when something leaves your mouth, it is no longer yours. True democracy provides the privilege of freedom of speech, but with it comes responsibility. In the modern world falsehood can spread its way around the world before truth has a chance to put its boots on. The recent award of $535,000 plus costs to Joe Karam in a defamation case against two men who launched an all-out attack on him because of support of David Bain, certainly sends a clear signal to all commentators in the public arena that New Zealand defamation laws require commentators to be very careful when they circulate opinions regarding individuals, that could lower and damage the reputation of that person in the eyes of right-minded thinking people. I took an interest in Joe Karam’s defamation proceedings. Like Joe Karam some years ago I successfully issued defamation proceedings as a result of statements that were made against me at a public dairy company meeting in my home town of Dargaville. In those days the local dairy company meetings were very well attended and sometimes very boisterous. There was certainly the local newspaper there which was well read. The local dairy

company chairman had stated publicly that I was party to causing the dairy company to lose a 10,000 ton coal order from States Mines. His public statements were found to be untrue and hurtful. Today on the internet we see emails being circulated and statements being made on social media such as Facebook that clearly are in breach of New Zealand defamation laws. It is good to see the government now introducing legislation regarding the internet whereby people will be held to account for malicious and threatening statements that are made against individuals. There are numerous examples where young people have been bullied and death threats have been made and also the inciting of individuals to commit suicide. While the majority of people realise that there is absolute privilege in relation

to Parliamentary proceedings and also in relation to judicial proceedings where individuals cannot issue slander or defamation proceedings, in every other public arena one must be extremely careful when it comes to making personal statements against an individual in public. Joe Karam’s case and other recent libel lawsuit awards where damages in excess of $800,000 plus costs have been awarded to the plaintiff, demonstrates that if one makes a statement that is actuated by malice and is designed to ridicule the individual, it can be very costly. We all have the right to speak out and question but we must remember our electronic communication to one another today is in the public domain. Everything is discoverable and largely we lack the control as to where it ends up, sometimes throughout the world. Many people believe that everything is fair game and make the mistake that you can say what you like and get away with it. It is amazing to see on the internet for example, cases where people make derogatory remarks about their local government councillors, thinking that they are entitled to do so. Some make the mistake of thinking that if you don’t name the person it is not defamatory. However, if a person’s reputation has been clearly impugned as a result of the statement and that personloses standing within the community, the law allows redress. For example, if a person who is advocating

an issue to a council, refers publicly to councillors as lacking integrity or acting dishonestly without naming them individually, legal actions can still be taken by councillors to protect their reputations. Justice Patricia Courtney found that 50 statements made against Joe Karam were defamatory and without defence. Few aspects of Mr Karam’s reputation were left untouched. The defamatory statements were made on Facebook and the Counterspin website. In a democracy, freedom of speech requires that public statements should be true and opinions honest. 

Nearly half a century later, older and perhaps wiser, they came to Dargaville over the weekend to remember the agricultural exchange that changed many of their lives. One of them was Dargaville resident John Bishop. In the late 1960s he was farming at Pouto and heard about the exchange through his local Young Farmers Club. So he applied.

“Pretty well anyone who applied got in. It was a working exchange — it’s still going today. Seventy-two of us went.” In fact, there were so many young kiwis they had to charter a plane to take them all to the USA and Canada, where they spent six months, before heading for Europe. Mr Bishop found himself on a grain farm in the Canadian province of Alberta. “It was flat as far as you could see. Everything was much bigger than in New Zealand. The tractors were 250 horsepower. In New Zealand they were around 70.” Mr Bishop was the only worker on the farm, apart from the owner. But a few of his fellow New Zealanders worked at neighbouring farms and were able to

get together at weekends. Before they started they also had a two-week bus trip to the USA. In Europe, Mr Bishop went to Denmark where he worked on a dairy and pig farm. Being Europe, all animals were kept indoors. “The cows were 100% indoors. There was zero grazing. There was nothing to compare it with.” Mr Bishop says he was the secondyoungest of the kiwis on the exchange. A number have passed on and some are getting elderly. So he and wife Margaret got to work organising a reunion at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club. “We didn’t know how many would make a 50th reunion. So we decided to organise a 47th.” 

The top of the North Island region of Rural Women New Zealand is hosting a Family Fun Picnic Day to celebrate the UN International Year of Family Farming on Sunday, May 25. “Considering the drought that many Northland farming families have faced this season, our region has chosen to hold fun day off the farm to support this event,” says president of the RWNZ’s Aoroa branch, Kath Gillespie. “The programme offers something for everyone and most importantly, some light relief. Any profits from the day will go to the Northland Rural Support Trust, which will then filter back to farming families who need some extra assistance.” Held at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club, the day will be reminiscent of a traditional family day out, with old fashioned races and competitions for children and adults. Outdoor activities will include an egg and spoon, sack and three legged races, gumboot throwing, horseshoe quoits, an obstacle course relay, marbles, hopscotch and knucklebones. Miniature horse and cart rides and tractor and trailer rides will keep the children entertained and there will be vintage and static machinery displays, DVDs of historical interest and stalls with lots of interactive fun. include best date scones, photography and colouring in. “We’re asking people to bring along their best date scones to be judged and we will have photo competition for children and adults. The categories are funniest, historical, family, landscape, creative and animals, so we encourage people to bring along their 6x4 inch prints.” Families can bring a picnic to share and there will be BBQ food, billy tea and damper, tea, coffee and sandwiches available. All sales will be cash only. The Family Fun Picnic Day opens at 9-30am at Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club, adjacent to Dargaville Museum, Mt Wesley Coast Rd, Dargaville. $5 per adult, $10 per family. Strong win at home for Northern Wairoa

New Kaipara Federated Farmers president John Blackwell hopes that the area’s two farmers’ organisations can combine to form one voice. Mr Blackwell, a beef farmer was elected to the position at the recent annual general meeting of the Kaipara section of Federated Farmers. There are two farmers’ organisations in Northland, with Farmers of New Zealand being formed after the Northland Division of Federated Farmers declined to affiliate with its national body. “Farmers are only 2.5% of the population, so there are only a few of us. Northern Wairoa maintained their dominance for the full 90 minutes with two more goals coming late in the game with a well placed long shot from Colin McCullough and brilliant control after a cross saw Louis Flight score his first goal of the season. The team now looks ahead to their next game against Tikipunga this Friday as they play an evening game under lights. The fixture will be the first night game for many of the Northern Wairoa team.

The Australian guava moth has made its way to the Kaipara and chances are, they are feasting and breeding on a fruit tree near you.

“This is the first year it has been reported in Dargaville and it’s travelled right down through Tinopai,” says Northland Regional Council’s Carl Cooper. “The moth was first identified in the Far North year’s ago and at the time we notified MAF who believed that they would die out in the frosts but when they got down to Kaeo, they realised that they were here to stay.” The small, black and white, speckled moth was first discovered in Kaitaia in 1997. It lays its eggs at the ends of fruit and the caterpillar hatches out and burrows into the fruit, where it feeds and produces frass (excrement), encouraging the growth of fungus. “Unfortunately, there isn’t a great deal people can do to fix the problem — apart

from hygiene around your trees. Remove fallen and rotting fruit and associated leaf litter from beneath trees and bury or burn it and this will help to control pupating guava moths,” adds Mr Cooper. Guava moths infest fruit all year round and its hosts include guava and feijoa this time of year. They are also known to infest citrus throughout winter and spring, loquats in spring, plums, peaches and nashi pear in summer and macadamia nuts from summer through to early winter.
