 After winning Northland designer of the year, Karen Solly of Waihue went on to take out fourth place at the national competition and was up against New Zealand’s top floral artists. The theme “first light, day bright,” inspired Karen to make a unique structure out of carnations, roses, wire, cotton wool and dyed cloth symbolising the sun and the clouds. She got into floral art because she wanted a challenge and she designs a new piece each month for her floral art club.

 The third annual DARE Day Out at Dargaville’s Selwyn Park in the school holidays provided eight teams of ten youngsters aged 9-16yrs with a range of challenging activities designed around the DARE skillset — Decision-making, Assertiveness, Responsibility and Esteem. Newly appointed ANZAC Theatre manager, Vernon Woods, says the secret to success for the Dargaville community cinema startup will be attracting young patrons.

“As a child you learn to love going to the cinema, and if the children come along so will their parents.” Vernon grew up in the Dargaville area and well remembers his own initiation at the Empire Theatre, which closed in the 1980s. “We saw everything from cartoons to ‘My Fair Lady’ to ‘Easy Rider’,” he says. As an adult, big city life in Auckland, Wellington and Seattle exposed Vernon to the film festival. “I learned that films could be art as well as entertainment.” Now he says that mix is one to strive for when the cinema opens its doors later in the year. His brief as manager is to ensure commercial sustainability for the facility alongside

development as a visual arts centre for the community. “We’ll be screening up to the minute blockbusters but also providing opportunities to support and develop local filmmaking,” he says. Vernon will also be responsible for operating the cinema’s state of the art digital projection equipment. Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust spokesperson, Josie Scott, says the trust will shortly be looking for volunteers to staff the cinema in exchange for viewing a free film during their shift. “They will need customer service skills, references and will be required to undergo a police check, and training will be provided.” ■

commence soon on the reclamation and boat ramp. “We’re currently firming up costs and designs for the silt and sediment controls and waiting for commitment from the machinery operators, who are all flat out right now.” He says all the work so far — part of a massive beautification plan for the town — has been achieved through donations of labour, machinery time and materials. “The consents allow us to reclaim some land, build the wharf and make some walk-ways,” says committee chairman, Albie Paton. Since the disintegration of the original wharf, over the years the Wairau Creek landing place for the first European settlers to the area has become a rubbish dump, and preparation for the new wharf has involved the removal of decades of debris. “The top of the dump has been levelled and the corrections department gangs clearing the banks are doing a marvellous job,” says Mr Paton. He says the longer than anticipated consent process means plans to complete the wharf in time for Maungaturoto’s 150th anniversary celebrations in November may now be a bit ambitious, but work will

Ian is playing the role of Horton, the kind-hearted elephant, in ‘Seussical’ — Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s next production. ‘Seussical’, a musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, is an amalgamation of many of Dr. Seuss’s children’s books with the main plot mirroring ‘Horton Hears a Who!’ Other Seuss characters include the Butter Side Uppers/Downers, Gertrude McFuzz and, of course, the Cat in the Hat. Although fish also appear in an underwater musical number, Ian says the fish in his bathtub are not part of the show. “They were struggling to survive in the dam beside my house, which has become severely depleted by the drought, and are in my bathtub only until the water levels are restored.” ‘Seussical’ opens in July for an eight-show season at ORT’s theatre in Bickerstaffe Road, with tickets available in June.

I also want clearer lines of responsibility and accountability.” Council was also looking to strengthen its engineering capacity and would recruit an operations engineer and asset management officer to work within its water services area.

A Kaipara based band, Soljah, may put the district well and truly on the map when they release their debut album, Aotearoa, during New Zealand music month.

The band describes its music as an ‘electric mix of influences’ combining reggae, jazz and distorted guitar giving them a unique and funky sound. in Pahi and lead vocalist Ben Ratima sings, ‘I’m looking to the Kaipara for inspiration. I’m looking to the Kaipara because it’s my stomping ground.’ Ben along with lead guitarist, Les Watene, as well as brothers, Tawhiri Littlejohn on the drums, and Raniera Littlejohn on the bass, grew up in Kaipara. “We’ve been friends for a long time and some of us went to the same school, so the band grew out of that,” says Ben and they formed in 2009. While on the hunt for a keyboarder, they found Jacob Nansen working in a music shop in Auckland and brought him onboard. The album has taken two years to produce and Ben says it’s their biggest achievement to date. The Littlejohn brothers travelled on the road with their father, Tony, a reggae artist, and most band members have children who are keen to learn instruments. Ben’s son, Isaiah, features in the music video writing the lyrics for Aotearoa. They will be celebrating their album release on May 10 at Maungaturoto Hotel with doors opening at 8pm. Tickets cost $10. ■

The Ruawai team played their host club Beecroft in the curtain raiser on the first day of a rugby packed ten day tour. “The boys flew into Sydney on the afternoon of April 19, went straight to the stadium and had a snack and a stretch in a nearby park, then it was all on,” says parent Sam Panoho.

Mangawhai Zonta celebrated a year of positive achievement when they hosted their annual district Forum recently at the Mangawhai Museum.

“In a week of utterly depressing world news the Forum was a pure lift of the spirits knowing that Zonta is making a very marked and positive contribution to the world,” Mangawhai club president Sue Poynter says about the day, which brought together the nine Zonta clubs from Auckland, Whangarei and Mangawhai. Farmers of New Zealand Inc. is registered under the Ministry of Economic Development as an advisory and advocacy service organisation in relation to farming. Our predecessor organisations go back to the Farmers Union, which was established in Kaitaia in 1899. While we represent farmers, we have a history of advocating for provincial New Zealand and particularly Northland. Our membership is open to all who support a strong rural community. Each year regional and local councils present their Draft Annual Plans with projected Rate charges for the next financial year. Many councils are changing their rating systems, which clearly penalises the rural community, charging different rating structures for dairying, beef farming, forestry and mining, at the same time lowering rates for some urban ratepayers. In the instance of the Far North District Council, dairy farmers are facing a 15% increase in roading rates and urban businesses are facing a decrease of up to 30%. The total national debt of New Zealand local authorities is $7.6 billion and the total rates revenue is $4.36 billion. There is approximately $2 of debt for

every $1 of income with a national debt of $1,796 per person. Since 2003 the national debt has increased by $182% compared to the Northland combined councils debt of 233%. Over the years farming and forestry has subsidised many urban infrastructure and services including urban flood schemes, sewerage treatment plants and even urban waste collection. The argument being that a better urban environment has a ‘general benefit’ to all. In addition, the rate collected off a farming property is significantly higher per person already and we would argue we have substantially cross-subsidised all urban services for many years. The argument that forestry and dairy

trucks are increasing the maintenance costs of some parts of our roading network is accepted. However, these are not the only trucks on the road and many businesses operating in urban centres create heavy transport traffic. We do not believe it is fair to isolate one industry for an increase while giving others a significant discount. It’s not at all surprising that a majority of ratepayers support the council’s proposal but describing it as ‘fair’ we cannot and do not agree with. M a ny r a t e p ay e r s affected by these proposals do NOT actually impose any damage on council roads. Many are located on State Highways and do not impact on the maintenance cost on council roads but these properties are going to be unfairly targeted. Is this a fairer rate for them? We accept quarrying has an impact on our roading network. However, quarries are also essential to the maintenance of our roads and the cost of crushed rock an important factor in the productivity of road maintenance. Since location of quarries is an important factor in the cost of metal we would argue that quarries would be able to recover the

increased cost of rates from their customers. This has the potential impact of increasing road maintenance costs and further impacting negatively on farmers already paying a premium through the proposed rate. Dairy farmers do not own milk tankers. While it is accepted that dairy farms do attract tankers onto the roading network, they are not the primary source of the problem. S u p e r m a r ke t s and other retail, engineering workshops, and many other sectors also attract heavy transport that uses commercial and industrial property. If the argument for giving these other users a rate discount because the majority of them use only State Highways the same discount should apply to farms and forestry that do the same. If they do use council roads other businesses should also be included in the differential. If this is not possible for practical reasons then the whole proposed scheme is definitely NOT fair. This current drought has shown urban New Zealand, that ‘when the rural community gets the flu, urban New Zealand gets pneumonia’. ■

Tyre ‘surgeons’ repair ravaged rubber Today’s big agricultural machines are one of the key factors making large scale farming possible in New Zealand — with big horsepower, high technology, and tyres made to fit. As with any precision part, the tyres used by the new generation of agricultural machines are built to high specifications, and often carry a price tag which reflects this. It’s not uncommon for a single large tractor tyre to cost in the thousands of dollars — a sobering thought for any tractor operator who has ever contemplated a puncture. More than this, downtime with such a machine also costs time and money. Contractors and farmers work on a schedule dictated by nature and the elements, and jobs are time critical. A machine out of order could very well be the ruination of a day’s work, or even signal large crop or feed losses. That’s why the team at Dargaville’s Gas and Tyre Services have applied themselves

to perfecting the skill of tyre repair for large agri machines. Using a process known as re-vulcanization, large holes and tears in the tyre may be repaired almost as good as new — and certainly with enough durability to get back to work in the field! Just like the original vulcanization process (which is used to cure rubber from its natural adhesive form to the sturdy, polymer-linked black stuff tyres are made of), the correct application of heat is key to this repair. But there’s also a lot of skill involved to make sure that the repair turns out strong and safe — a factor added to the equation by Gas and Tyres’ technicians. With a background working alongside

The dairy industry is one of New Zealand’s biggest primary producers, so when a single issue is targeted as the ‘most expensive animal health problem in dairy farming’ it has serious implications not just for farmers but for the national economy. The dollars soon begin to add up when it’s revealed that this health issue — mastitis — can end up costing in excess of $200 per cow per infection. Multiply this figure across the sheer number of productive dairy cows in New Zealand and it becomes apparent why some of our best agricultural researchers are hard at work seeking solutions. One way to slash the cost of mastitis is to treat it early, in the ‘subclinical’ phase, before symptoms may even be apparent to the unaided human eye. That’s why Waikato Milking Systems have researched and developed their new Smart D-TECT system — an addition to modern milking sheds which can accurately pinpoint mastitis well before it reaches a clinical level. The results are immediate, according to farmers who have adopted the system already, and not the least of them is a reduced cell count in the finished product. “What makes Smart D-TECT unique,”

says Dean Bell, Waikato Milking Systems Chief Executive. “Is that the system operates automatically every time the cluster is attached and flags problem cows at the subclinical stage every time a cow is milked. This has never been done before in such a simple and unobtrusive way.” It does so by testing the conductivity factor or ‘CF’ of each quarter (each one of the four teats on the udder), rather than testing the CF across the entire cluster. This added accuracy means that mastitis can be detected swiftly, and that data from the Smart D-TECT system can be collated via computer to build a larger picture of herd health in the long term. “In a typically healthy animal, all quarters should be the same irrespective of the specific conductivity value,” say the Waikato Milking Systems designers. “Farmers can tune the sensitivity of the system and set a threshold that best suits their herd.” ■

Ashleigh also runs two classes on Wednesdays during the school term with 55 students enrolled. “It’s exciting to hear that Wednesdays have become the favourite day of the week for a lot of the kids we are coaching,” says Ashleigh, “We are looking forward to continuing to grow the sport in Dargaville and hope to train up some coaches in the area.”
