When keen Tinopai fisher, Ken Keesing, named his six-metre boat Great White and anchored regularly at his favourite fishing spots on the Kaipara Harbour, he had no perception that he was tempting fate …

p Integrity Community Media’s Dargaville based team

“In a rapidly evolving and diverse world of mass communication, Integrity Community Media is standing firm on long-established values — and we believe that our business model of adhering to the old-fashioned principles of the newspaper industry has been our point of difference,” he says. “This has been the reason we have created Integrity Community Media, and how we’ll continue to develop a strong regular readership for all our publications.” The ownership and staff of the company will all remain the same — and remain 100 per cent Kiwi, in the face of multinational competition. Those staff comprise a skilled team who are dedicated to the meaning of the new name ‘Integrity’. The name change simply reflects the core values and principles of ethical journalism that our company and publications are based on, as well as a balanced commitment to our readers, advertisers and the wider community. Part of this is about upholding the long-established values and obligations of the craft of journalism, and we are determined that these are, and will continue to be, reflected in our publications. In a world where internet pundits and self-proclaimed experts vie for their preferred political spin, and the antics of pop stars, the aberrations of human nature, the curiosities, the prurient and the outright banal have

become ‘news’, Integrity will always stand out as different. It comes down to having a team who are passionate about all aspects of the publication process — from journalists who hold truth and accuracy paramount, through to meticulous proofreaders, talented graphic designers and copywriters, an insightful sales staff and a motivated administration team. We are not bloggers, part-time opinionists or spin doctors. We are all about bringing the public content they can trust. General Manager, Deb Wright, says that she’s proud of the Integrity ‘family’ — looking back with accomplishment on how far the business has come and investing in big plans for the future. “Changing our name to Integrity shows we’re different,” she says. “Our customers and readers are key — without their trust, we don’t exist. That’s why I’m pleased to work with a team who truly believe in the value of what they’re achieving each edition.” It may sound very old-fashioned but journalistic and professional integrity has been the standard, which has served our industry well since the first newspaper was published in 1605, and will continue to serve it well into the future. As a reader, advertiser, organisation, business, sports team, club or charity represented in our pages, you can count on that spirit being carried on — with Integrity. ¢

p Ken Keesing with the damaged motor

But, not so, as he was “peacefully catching fish, about three or four hundred metres past the yellow buoy (channel marker) when I looked over the stern, and there was a great white shark coming up, mouth wide-open, and I looked straight down its throat.” Ken and his fishing mate of 30 years, Maurice Hodgson, estimated the great white at five metres as it swept under the namesake boat and then “slammed into the outboard motor ripping motor mounts out of it, before turning back and nibbling the prop before swimming away.” The two men were able to motor back to Tinopai, but

with severe damage to the motor lift “we were an hour and a half getting it onto the trailer.” While there is now a great fishing story to tell, next on the list are repairs, and Ken is still assessing the cost. “I have seen the odd shark over the years, a few fins in the water — but nothing ever like this.” An alert has been issued by the Northland Regional Council Houhora harbour master urging water users to be careful after a number of great white sharks have been spotted “rather hungry” in the Houhora Harbour. ¢

Tower climb an annual challenge u by Jill Dickie

Two Kaipara teams have lined up for the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge raising funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand on May 19.

p Far North Ulysses Motorcycle club coordinator, Nick Grbin, of Whangarei presented a donation cheque for $1,500 to Dargaville St John Ambulance representatives, Sally Parkinson and Stephen Wykes. Funds were from the Far North Ulysses Rally held last year. The Dargaville St John Ambulance also supplied $10 lunches, and money raised from the day’s raffle totalled another $1,190. Riding conditions were ideal for the 69 riders who attended the event, and with pillion passengers, approximately 90 people turned up to show their appreciation and support. Members travelled from Auckland, North Harbour and the Far North.

‘This government is for the regions — yeah, right?’ u by Matt King, MP for Northland

Regional New Zealand has been hammered by the hands of this Ardern-Peters government, most recently by the announcement of a ban on any new offshore exploration. The announcement was kept secret until just before the prime minister’s trip to Europe to allow her to tell international media about it. And so continues the coalition government’s raid on the back pockets and futures of hard-working New Zealanders. In just six months, the Ardern-Peters government has axed National’s tax package, which would have seen the average worker more than $1,000 a year better off, announced an 11.5 cents a litre fuel tax in Auckland, proposed an additional nationwide fuel tax of up to 13.8 cents a litre and gutted $5 billion from regional roading projects. They’ve axed funding for regional irrigation projects, which would have helped farmers and growers deal with severe weather, providing certainty, jobs and export growth. And they’ve announced large-scale industrial relations reform, which will see fewer jobs created and fewer opportunities for people looking to enter the workforce. These are just some examples, but they add up to a real, negative

impact on the lives and livelihoods of hard-working New Zealanders and on our national prosperity. They will mean lower incomes, fewer jobs and a higher cost of living. The petrol tax alone will mean motorists are paying up to an extra $15 every time they fill up. It will also mean we are all paying more for things like groceries as freight operators are forced to pass their costs on. Regions like ours are being put on the backburner. For a government that campaigned on helping regional development, we have already been short-changed, and we’re only six months in. The government has turned its back on the Northland region, and it seems to be all about Auckland. People here are giving me their reactions to what is happening, and I want you to keep giving me this feedback as it is an essential component of the job I do for the region. Rather than stand in their way, this government needs to get in behind New Zealanders, and National will be working to ensure they do.

Growers to the poll u by Jill Dickie

Dargaville chartered accountant and kumara grower, Kathryn de Bruin, is standing for election to the Horticulture New Zealand board this month with the aim of being a voice for all growers to focus on establishing strong horticultural businesses, a sustainable environment, empowered people, and thriving communities. “New Zealand’s diverse hor ticulture industr y has grown dramatically and faces challenges including biosecurity, environmental sustainability, technology and regulation, and access to water, markets and skilled people,” she says. “Keeping pace with these changes is one thing, but we need more diverse leadership and new thinking. The board is there to support its levy payers allowing them to be adaptable, resilient and successful.” From her accountancy practice, Kathryn employs nine people and works with clients from across the primary sector. “My financial background will support well-thought-out decisions p Kathryn de Bruin on the setting and use of HortNZ grower levies and ensure that any and served in numerous other industry financial implications are taken fully and community roles. The Horticulture into account.” New Zealand board represents over Kathryn has represented the primary 5,000 commercial fruit and vegetable sector on the national council of the growers who employ about 60,000 NZ Institute of Chartered Accountants, people. Voting closes on May 28 with chaired two school boards of trustees results announced June 1. ¢

Saving lives at sea

An invitation to dance

u by Ayla Miller

u by Jill Dickie

Coastguard North Kaipara have a mission to ensure no lives are lost in the harbour, and they are urging the community to give generously during the annual May Day Rescue Appeal this month.

The Bull-Bar Dance Studio is looking for young hip-hop enthusiasts to join their 10–12 year old and 13–17 year old teams. Children with or without natural talent are invited to become part of the dance family and be a part of the supportive community.

President Walter Smith says many people do not realise each unit is expected to be self-sufficient. “We are a volunteer organisation and a charity but do not receive government funding, so we are always very grateful for the generous public contributions to our annual appeal, which helps pay for training, fuel and vessel maintenance.” The North Kaipara unit has been training intensively over the last two years to achieve the stringent standards required by Coastguard Northern Region. This has paid off as they are

now able to operate Manaia, their shallow-draft 6.8 metre Naiad craft, which is ideal for the muddy harbour and powerful enough to reach the heads in about 20 minutes. The vessel will soon share accommodation with the Tinopai Rural Fire Force at the Tinopai Volunteer Rescue Centre, which is currently under construction. Coastguard North Kaipara volunteers will be at Dargaville Countdown on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week with their collection buckets. ¢

Local dairy farmers, Ray and Sharon Ututaonga, became involved in the dance six years ago when their daughter began competing successfully at a regional and national level, and the three of them have been encouraging children to become involved since. Inspired by well-known hip-hop artist, Parris Goebel, who has worked with international stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber, the Ututaonga family created the dance studio to help children in the Kaipara area. “We are all about the community and kids, and giving them the opportunity

to experience dance onstage. We are looking for places for them to perform,” said Ray and Sharon. Training is two afternoons a week and parents are welcome to stay and watch. The team is introducing the dance programme into schools and planning a workshop with Ruawai Primary School. Inspiration for prospective dancers also comes from a current New Zealand hip-hop dance group named Bradas that won the World Championships in 2015 and 2016 and will be featured on the upcoming TV program World of Dance.  ¢

By-law proves ‘positive’ Enviroschools award

7

u by Ayla Miller

u by Jill Dickie

A Council by-law, which shifts the responsibility of wastewater systems onto property owners is a ‘positive step’ according to acting chief executive Peter Tynan.

Dargaville Intermediate School has achieved an Enviroschools Green/Gold Award for work in sustainability within their community and environment. Kaipara-based Northland Regional Councillor Penny Smart, and Enviroschools Northland Facilitator Susan Karels presented the award.

The Wastewater Drainage By-law was adopted just over a year ago following the discovery of a large number of failing wastewater systems discovered, which raised concern over the potential environmental and health risks. Kaipara District Council’s spokesman, Ben Hope, says the purpose of the bylaw is “to protect the health of the public and environment by taking a proactive management approach.” The by-law requires property owners with wastewater disposal systems to ensure their system operates to a satisfactory standard and check the health of the system once every five years. “[This by-law is] a positive step for the environment and the communities of Kaipara,” said Mr Tynan. Failure to maintain the systems can result in offensive odour, wastewater seepage and general environmental pollution. In the past council officers found many property owners did not understand the importance of system maintenance or the environmental implications when not maintained. As a result, a high percentage of on-site systems were found to be poorly maintained. The introduction of this by-law, which includes maintenance and performance inspections and an approval programme for septic tanks, is part of a move towards working with communities to

maintain the environment. A council by-law officer may recommend a suitably qualified person to carry out a warrant of fitness check, which includes engaging an on-site servicing specialist to undertake, for a fee, a regular WOF service and performance check. The WOF inspection report will advise when the septic tank or treatment plant compartments need to be desludged or pumped out, whether the land application area needs attention and how the overall system is performing. ¢

Mothers day is this week! Show her you care with a gift that says ‘You’re Special’

This is the first Green/Gold award achieved in the Kaipara district and one of only six in Northland so far. One of the projects the pupils are involved in is propagating plants, growing them, then helping to plant them on farm areas susceptible to erosion in the Kaipara District. “We cleared land for stock purposes, and now it’s important we put some of that back,” said Board of Trustees chairperson, Ian Simons, at the award presentation. “Dargaville Intermediate is often spoken about as being a role model for the rest of the country,” said Bay of Plenty Regional Council Enviroschools

regional coordinator, Natalie Ridler. The Enviroschools programme encourages schools and pupils to think and act instinctively about caring for their future, and on how they interact with the community and natural resources, appreciating the overall value of the environment. From a starting point at bronze level schools investigate how they can work with their local community and regional council sharing information, providing a focus on ensuring a sustainable future. Schools and their facilitators undergo a self-reflection assessment before upgrading to silver level, then the green/gold level. ¢

‘Through the lens’

Baylys water leak

u by Ayla Miller

u by Jill Dickie

For the first time in many years, the Dargaville Camera Club’s work will be on display to the public as an exhibition at the Muddy Waters Gallery.

An accidental break of the main waterline on Baylys Coast Road left residents without water last Wednesday until early Friday evening.

President of the club, Jan Bellamy, says the club has wanted to hold an exhibition for a long time but have not had anywhere to put it. The exhibition ‘Through the lens’ will include art photography, landscapes and nature. Jan has been taking photographs for almost 20 years and has been recognised in many competitions throughout New Zealand and internationally. The club meets once a month, and members present their works for critique by a judge. “We have a novice section, a B grade section and p Jan Bellamy, president of the Dargaville Camera Club, with the A grade for the more one of her pieces to be displayed in the exhibition accomplished photographers. p Workmen repairing the waterline

The second phase of the scheduled upgrade and replacement waterline is underway, and during drilling, a portion of the main line feeding the reservoir at Baylys Beach was broken. To enable the repair water was manually turned off. During drilling workmen identify the location of the current line before proceeding by digging ‘potholes’, but the area of Wednesday’s incident went under a creek so was not visible. “Occasionally it happens, we try our best to locate current lines,” said a

United Civil Construction spokesperson. After the initial repair a second break occurred on Friday morning and further maintenance was required before services were returned to normal later in the day. When completed the upgrade will direct water through a bigger diameter plastic pipe providing a larger volume of water to the Baylys area to cope with the higher population there. The old pipeline will remain in use once repaired. ¢

Wasps buzz off u by Jill Dickie

The abundance of Asian and Australian paper wasps in the Kaipara district is about to decrease as most will die with cooler weather approaching while some will hibernate through the winter months.

African youth choir success

More than 200 people turned up at the Dargaville town hall last Thursday evening to be entertained by the visiting Ugandan children’s choir, Mwangaza, performing traditional African songs and dance.

p Members of the choir during their performance on Thursday evening

Paper wasps are identifiable by a more slender body and longer legs than other species. They build nests about the size of a pear and these hang from small shrubs and trees, fences, walls, and often under the eaves of houses. “Although not as aggressive as the common and German wasps, which usually build their nests underground, they will still sting as a means of

protecting themselves from harm,” said Northpest spokesperson Cheryl Smith. There are several means of eradication using insecticide dusting powders, or household fly spray. “Early in the morning while it’s still cool spray the nest with fly spray then remove it”, said Cheryl. According to DOC paper wasps do not create any major impact on native insects in Northland.

The show incorporated colour, drumming, energy, and big smiles as the choir sang, and children spoke about their personal journeys, coming from poverty-stricken backgrounds before being sponsored through Tearfund. The 18 children, between the ages of nine and 13, auditioned for their roles in the choir and spent seven months rehearsing for their “Light Up” tour. The tour began in Australia three months ago, has one month in New Zealand before a further month in Australia, then

proceeds to Asia before returning home in August. “We have had one of the warmest welcomes from Northlanders, the warmth is the most genuine we find,” said Tearfund NZ Tour manager, Sharon Raath. While on tour the children are billeted in family homes and are homeschooled by teachers touring with them. Funds raised from the sale of merchandise, and from donations, are for their school in Gaba province. ¢

New faces at Te Ha Oranga u by Ayla Miller

Te Ha Oranga is welcoming three new clinical staff on board, and with them, they bring a range of experience. Cara Donaldson and Virginia Wati will take on the role of kaimaanaki or community health support persons and Jacque Tibbits joins the team as a registered nurse. Te Ha Oranga clinical operations manager, Rhonda Zielinski-Toki, says the women will bring “enthusiasm, fresh approach, passion, a love for tamariki and youthfulness.” Cara is the mother of two boys and has worked in hospitality for 20 years. She also has experience in caregiving, and her main role will be testing school students as part of the rheumatic fever screening programme. “I wanted to get back to working with children because that’s where my real passion lies,” she said.

Virginia has a background in health, education, working with Maori, families and children. “I love the kaupapa of Te Ha Oranga in particular manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga and the opportunity we have to provide excellent services for all.” Jacque says she is looking forward to working with Te Ha Oranga as she is passionate about primary health care and accessibility. “I like that we have a mobile nursing unit so we can take health care to those who may not be able to access it normally and I love the tikanga Maori and Te Ao Maori — Maori worldview — aspect of it all.” ¢

Warm and creative crafts u by Andy Bryenton

Knitting is making a comeback around the world, as folks people seek out new crafts and pastimes as an alternative — or an accompaniment — to modern technology. From hip young Silicon Valley professionals knocking out a few lines of angora while having a lunchtime chai latte, through to practical souls who want to create fair trade, sweatshop-free and affordable winter wear, the trend is growing. Now Dargaville, too, has its own wool and craft shop, a new addition to the main street which rises on the site of the old. After a brief hiatus as the offices of a legal professional, the shop next to Jack Fannon Menswear is once again brimful of soft and colourful wools, chunky knitting needles and stacks of inspirational patterns and pictures. It’s all thanks to another returning local — Maxine Sommerville, who many may remember as the manager of the caravan park and cabins on Normanby Street. After an Australian odyssey to the busy mining communities near Perth — where the temperature topped out in the high 50s — Maxine has returned with an entrepreneurial ambition, based on a craft she first learned from her mother at a young age. The new venture — aptly entitled Max’s Wool Shop — delivers all it says on the label and much more. As noted, knitting is having a worldwide renaissance, as the perfect pastime to either switch off from the modern technosphere and relax meditatively while achieving a practical purpose

p A world of wool — Maxine Sommerville is the owner of Dargaville’s newest — and perhaps warmest — little store

or to enjoy while taking in news or a movie, video chatting with friends and relatives. The simple motions and easy instructions make it easy to learn for the novice, but the scope for intricate details and a massive choice of colours and patterns mean that there’s always something new to explore. Alongside knitting, Maxine also stocks all the tools to crochet ‘handmade lace’, another

practical craft making a comeback. With a massive refurbishment completed, the new store radiates comfort and warmth from walls stacked with the best wools in the world — from New Zealand, of course! Opening day is tomorrow, May 9, and Maxine invites everyone to come and pay a visit — and to get inspired to pick up knitting needles this winter. ¢

Staying safe with chainsaws u by Andy Bryenton

They’ve revolutionised forestry and changed the way the average person deals with firewood — and even the way farmers cut fence posts to size or builders chop down excess timber. Whether felling, pruning or making mounds of winter fuel, the ubiquitous chainsaw has saved hundreds of hours of time and added millions to the economy. Nevertheless, there are still those who don’t know how to stay safe with these powerful tools. Stihl, manufacturers of some of the biggest and most advanced saws on the planet, are always interested to educate the public on what the logging industry already know well. The uptake of proper safety gear has led to a dramatic decline in major injuries in what was once known as the most dangerous job in the forest. New technology in chainsaws themselves, with powerful and quick-acting chain brakes and systems to prevent ’bucking’ and chains sticking tight combines with material tech in items like safety chaps and nigh-impenetrable eye protection, mesh visored helmets, thick gloves and steel capped boots to create a suit of armour for the saw user. Chainsaw safety is partly about this full suite of protective items — including ear protection from the massive sound of the engine — and also about technique. Learning the right way to cut is just as important as the thick fibres, which clog the chain if you miss and hit your protective chaps, or the tempered lens coating, which stops wood splinters from striking your eyes. If you’re a novice — and this season will see a fair number of first-time chainsaw users, migrated from the city to enjoy the country life — don’t just settle for buying a great saw.

Talk to the folks at your local chainsaw specialists about technique — they have web resources, brochures and tips from the forestry trade to make your work safer quicker and easier. Finally, remember that a sharp, lubricated and smooth-running chainsaw is safer than an old ‘rust bucket’. Give your machine a pre-winter tune-up to ensure a tight, free-running chain, sharp
